Greg Bedard and Nick Cattles bring you a brand new episode where they dissect the recent Patriots loss in Arizona. After another disheartening display, is Jerod Mayo's job even further in jeopardy? If so, could Mike Vrabel be the one to replace him?

00:00This is the Gregg Bedard Patriots podcast with Nick Cavins.
00:10Picks app today.

00:28We will eventually get to the Arizona Cardinals game, but it's now Wednesday as we record
00:34this and we both feel, Gregg and I both feel like not many people want to dig too deep
00:40into that game that we saw on Sunday.
00:42The bigger news of course this week and what people are talking about is Gerard Mayo, his
00:47future Mike Vrabel.
00:49So we're going to start there.
00:50Gregg, let me actually begin with Dietrich Weiss who met with the media earlier today.
00:57And I'm just going to give you a 20 second rant.
01:01Weiss protected Mayo like he should, as any player should in the locker room asked about
01:06Mayo's future, but he brought up Dan Campbell.
01:09And I got to tell you, if I took a shot, every time Dan Campbell's name was brought up to
01:13justify a second Mayo season, I would have died weeks ago, Gregg.
01:17I would be a dead man buried in the ground.
01:21Everybody keeps going to Dan Campbell.
01:23I'll say it one more time and then get your thoughts.
01:25Yes, Gerard Mayo could be the next Dan Campbell.
01:28He could be the next Bill Belichick who started off terribly here.
01:32He could be the next, this coach or that.
01:34He could also become the next head coach that was never ready for the job, never good for
01:40the job and ends up failing at the job.
01:43I'm so sick and tired.
01:45Again, I leave the door open for Mayo to eventually somehow some way become good, but I'm so damn
01:51sick and tired of Dan Campbell's name being brought up every 10 seconds in New England.
01:57I completely agree with you.
02:01Seems like it's kind of the party line because we were hearing this, you know, not only from
02:05players.
02:06We've heard it from Mayo.
02:07I think we've heard it from some reporting, whether it's just Sina Anderson or others
02:12like they're always bringing up Dan Campbell and, and that's fine.
02:16And Gerard may be that, but, um, before you can talk about being Dan Campbell, um, well,
02:25let's start here.
02:26Um, Dan Campbell was a guy who, uh, was, I want to say six years as a tight ends coach
02:33with the Dolphins.
02:35Okay.
02:36Um, he, he got to be the interim head coach.
02:39Um, I think it was after Sperano got fired.
02:43Um, you know, didn't go, go well, but he got, he got a taste of it.
02:48He got experience in the head job.
02:50Then he went to the new Orleans saints and was the assistant head coach and tight ends
02:55coach under Sean Payton.
02:57Yep.
02:58Um, he did that for, I think five years.
03:01Okay.
03:02So we're talking double the experience that, that Gerard Mayo had before he got this job.
03:09I mean, Campbell was an assistant, let's call it, you know, 10, 11 years, something
03:12like that.
03:13He had also been an NFL head coach had sat in that job, went through it, got to see what
03:21he did.
03:22Right.
03:23Got to see what he did wrong.
03:24I'm going to be better.
03:25The next time I get that opportunity.
03:26Um, so that's number one.
03:28Number two, Dan Campbell, as we've pointed out many times at the end of his first season
03:33with the lions and that, that team was crap back.
03:37I mean, that was a bad football team, a untalented, I think it was only a few years prior when
03:44they went, Oh, in 16, when Rod Marinelli was there, um, you know, he, they, they were terrible.
03:52They went three and three down the stretch.
03:54They showed something down the stretch.
03:57Um, as soon as Gerard Mayo accomplishes that, which is why we talked about the final four
04:03games.
04:04I mean, we would have talked about more, but they were losing games, but okay, now you
04:06get the bi-week, you come back for the final four games.
04:10You got some tough match-ups.
04:11Um, all right, go, go show that you're making progress.
04:16And the problem is, is there is no progress.
04:18So in terms of experience and also, uh, the actuality of his first year installing his
04:24quote unquote program, uh, Gerard Mayo doesn't come close to adding, uh, to, to measuring
04:30up to Dan Campbell.
04:32So quite frankly, uh, people should shut up and stop comparing Gerard Mayo to Dan Campbell
04:38because, uh, that's just another fail for Gerard Mayo and, and, you know, just overall,
04:45I just want to say, and I said this on, on Felger and Maz, as far as Gerard Mayo and
04:50his, uh, his future, um, you know, whether he should be retained or not, um, you know,
04:57I don't think it was a very high bar this season for Gerard Mayo.
05:01I don't think anybody was really, I think I predicted six wins.
05:05I don't know where you were on that.
05:06I don't think it was much more than that.
05:08It was probably, I was at five.
05:10Okay.
05:11You were at five.
05:12Um, you know, which would have been, both of them would have been some improvement from
05:17last year.
05:18And I'm not even talking, you know, wins and losses.
05:20I don't really care about that.
05:21Um, but you know, really what you, what you wanted to see was at some point at this, in
05:27the second half of the season, you wanted to see him get some traction.
05:32The team start going in the right direction.
05:34Okay.
05:35That hasn't happened.
05:36And then you fall back to, all right, there are three areas that were really in Gerard
05:40Mayo's wheelhouse.
05:41When he came into this whole thing, number one was defense team, captain little bill,
05:48one of the smartest football players I've ever been around, um, helped run the defense
05:52the previous five years for the Patriots.
05:56That hasn't happened.
05:57The, the, the defense, it would have been fine if they just took a step back from like,
06:02you know, ninth and DVO way to 15, 16, somewhere in the teens because of the injuries and all
06:08that, we would have been like, okay, I understand to go to, I think they're 30th now, 31st,
06:15whatever.
06:16Um, just an Epic fail.
06:17Um, you figured with his experience in media at Optum, uh, leading a room, which we've
06:25heard he's good at that.
06:27He would, he would probably Excel at the media part of the job, which, which, you know, is,
06:33is somewhat important, especially when you're, uh, establishing something and you know, following
06:39bill Belichick, which in, in, in terms of podium, podium performance is not that difficult
06:45to do.
06:46Um, he keeps stepping in it, including on Sunday, which was probably his worst moment
06:50of the season.
06:51The, you said it, I didn't.
06:54And, uh, the other thing was team culture.
06:57Uh, you know, we heard about him changing the culture here.
07:02Um, it was going to be better for the team.
07:04It was going to be better for the players.
07:06Um, you know, it kind of went through a low there, but now we got case on booty talking
07:11after the game, calling out the offensive coordinator, Drake may a little bit fought,
07:16probably fought.
07:17Everyone's falling in the lead of the head coach who threw his offensive coordinator
07:20under the bus.
07:22You know, look, like I said, it wasn't a high bar for Gerard Mayo to be where everybody
07:27would back off and say like, all right, um, I can see where this is going at this point
07:33in the season, where they are.
07:35Um, it's, it's difficult to make that argument that you could say, okay, I see this is, this
07:41is going someplace and it's going someplace positive.
07:45Whenever somebody brings up Dan Campbell's name, I got a new game that I'm going to play.
07:49I'm just going to yell Nathaniel Hackett for no reason.
07:52You know, because Nathaniel Hackett was an offensive coordinator for nine years in the
07:57NFL, got a chance to run the Denver program and was fired after 15 games as the Denver
08:03head coach, because he was so bad.
08:05And by the way, he had four wins with Denver when he was fired.
08:09So I think that's, that's going to be my fun little retort to whoever just says, oh, well,
08:14Dan Campbell.
08:15Okay, great.
08:16Yes.
08:16He could be Dan Campbell.
08:17He also could be Nathaniel Hackett and be a complete failure at the job.
08:22The culture thing, I find it also be Hugh Jackson.
08:25There's a whole list of them.
08:26He goes, there's literally hundreds of coaches that have failed.
08:31Um, so, you know, I, I'm just, I'm tired of that example being thrown
08:36out there every time on my face.
08:37Uh, the culture stuff is interesting going off of what you just said, because.
08:42You know, all of a sudden Gerard in the last month or so, and I think this will
08:46lead into my next question with what Dietrich wise said at the podium today.
08:51Both Mayo and Wolf hammered culture, right?
08:55We're not going to be as hard ass.
08:58It's about culture.
08:59It's about connecting.
09:00It's about building something.
09:02It's about putting the North star in the facility or whatever they did.
09:05Robin Glazer was busy finding artists to paint stuff, whatever was going on.
09:09It was, we're going to change the culture.
09:11And then all of a sudden about a month ago, I think maybe it was earlier, maybe
09:18it was a week or two later, but all of a sudden Gerard changed all of a sudden.
09:23Gerard started to tell us that reset the culture in year one.
09:28I never thought you could reset a culture in year one.
09:33That's that's part of this is like, you're going to sit there and you're going to tell
09:40us what you're going to do and how you're going to improve things.
09:43And then we see no evidence of it.
09:45And not only do we see no evidence of it, but then you start to
09:47back away from your own claims.
09:50Like that, that is so ridiculous.
09:53You can't sell us on culture for the first six months of your job as the head coach.
09:59And then all of a sudden, in the middle of a miserable season go, Oh, well, you
10:03know, I reset the culture in year one who, who resets a culture in year one.
10:07Who I didn't think that was pot.
10:09Then you shouldn't have sold it in the first place, Gerard, you shouldn't have
10:12sold that idea if it was impossible to do, which leads me to, you know, who did
10:17Dan Campbell, but anyways, Dan Campbell, um, leads me to wise, another comment.
10:23He said, he said that Gerard's leadership is one of the best that he has seen.
10:29I want to ask you, and maybe you haven't heard anything, but have you heard
10:32anything about Gerard's leadership in the building, leading the guys?
10:36Has anything come out to you?
10:38Have you talked to any sources as has anybody come up to you on the side and
10:42said, you know what, yeah, we're miserable right now on the field, but he, he has
10:46been a good leader of men in that locker room.
10:48Have you heard anything regarding, regarding the, the leadership quotient?
10:52Uh, I have not.
10:54And, uh, all I can do is what I see with the product, you know, on the field and
10:58you look for things like, you know, accountability and improvement and error
11:03corrections and things like that.
11:04And that hasn't gone on.
11:06So that that's all I can go off of.
11:10Drake may was at the podium.
11:12He said the players are backing Mayo again, pretty expected from the, from
11:16the starting quarterback, right?
11:18But I wanted to ask you how much could that actually impact the crafts?
11:22If you're Robert, you're Jonathan, you see the product on the
11:25field and it's miserable.
11:26There's not really any improvement that we can pick out from
11:30beginning to this point so far.
11:33How much does that weigh in if you're craft and you say, yeah, it was rough,
11:38but man, the players are backing them.
11:41The players believe in him.
11:42And if we get rid of him after one year, that could really screw up
11:47that locker room more than we think.
11:50Well, the latter part, I don't subscribe to, um, you know, obviously
11:57it would depend who they brought in.
11:58But, um, look, everybody in that locker room, well, maybe not the younger
12:03guys, but everybody in that locker room knows this is professional football.
12:08It is a performance based business.
12:10And if somebody doesn't do their job, they're gone players and coaches alike.
12:15And so if Gerard Mayo was gone, I don't think there's any ramifications.
12:20Obviously it matters, you know, who they replace them with.
12:23Uh, but you know, I'll, I'll just say this.
12:27I, um, I'm not going to totally, I'm not going to totally discount
12:32what the players are saying.
12:34Um, me, myself as a natural born cynic and, uh, my cynicism has been, uh, well
12:41honed, uh, over 25 years in this business.
12:45Um, you know, me personally, I, I, I toss it out the window.
12:50I mean, what are these guys going to say?
12:51I mean, there's three games left in the season.
12:53Nobody's, nobody's going to go up there and say, yeah, our coach is terrible.
12:59Especially a guy like Dietrich wise, who is, um, I don't think he ever played
13:04with Gerard, but certainly has played for Gerard, um, you know, as an, when
13:09he was an assistant coach and Drake may is, you know, Drake may, I mean, he's,
13:13he doesn't know what he doesn't know at this point in time, but do I think it.
13:18It could impact the crafts.
13:21Um, I, I'm not gonna, I'm not going to toss that out.
13:25I'm not going to ignore that.
13:26I mean, it's possible, especially with Robert, we know how sentimentally is,
13:30and, you know, he's probably looking for, uh, any reason to, um, to retain Mayo.
13:37And, um, but the other thing I did want to say about this is, um, you know, the
13:44truth of the matter is like, we could see the on-field products and all this stuff.
13:48The truth of the matter is we have no idea what's going on inside that
13:51building in terms of, um, you know, who's exactly doing what, you know, like
13:56you asked about, you know, Mayo's leadership, um, we don't know what
14:00kind of fires he is or isn't, um, you know, putting out inside the
14:06locker room or inside the building.
14:07Um, so, you know, these guys are entitled to their opinions.
14:11Me personally, they don't matter much to me, but, um, I'm not going to
14:15discount that it couldn't, uh, influence ownership in some way.
14:20A couple of comments from, uh, wide receivers that I want to mention
14:24here happening right now on the scene.
14:26Before we get to, uh, Mayo and more Mayo and Rabel, uh, first
14:33let's start with Keishon booty.
14:37I think the, I think the Patriots lead the league in apologies.
14:40Um, booty said that he later apologized to Alex van Pelt for what he said in
14:46the, uh, in the locker room post Cardinals game, when he, uh, was, was
14:51telling Alex van Pelt that they should run, uh, different offense against
14:57man coverage, but he said, uh, quote, I'm sorry for the way the message
15:00came across, I went about it the wrong way.
15:04He also said nobody likes losing obviously.
15:06So I think it was just frustration lingering from the game.
15:09I thought I was wrong for what I said.
15:11It wasn't the right way to handle it.
15:13So at least he has apologized publicly and apologized to van Pelt.
15:19Uh, but what did you make of, of booties post game comments?
15:24Oh, I thought they were ridiculous.
15:26And, um, you know, it's just, it's just, I mean, just throwing a little
15:32log on the fire for the season.
15:34That's been a raging inferno.
15:36I mean, um, you know, why that case on booty feels empowered to give his
15:42opinion on anything, um, is utterly ridiculous.
15:47And to me, it's symbolic of, uh, the Mayo era at this point.
15:52Um, this is not the first time he's done it.
15:54And again, we're talking about, um, you know, coaches, uh, making
16:00people accountable, correcting errors.
16:03They can't even correct, um, some, you know, fifth string wide
16:07receiver mouth and off after the game.
16:09I mean, you know, and we're expecting them to, to solve, uh,
16:13great football issues on the field.
16:15Um, yeah, it's just, to me, it's, uh, it's ridiculous.
16:20The case on booty who, uh, the same case on booty has 27 catches for
16:24349 yards and a touchdown this year.
16:26Uh, I wanted, I wanted booty's opinion in the post game.
16:29I wanted his opinion about dropping the football leading to an interception.
16:33That that's the only opinion I wanted from Keisha booty, another wide
16:36receiver note here in a serious one.
16:39Uh, Jayvon Baker popped up with a concussion on the injury report last week.
16:44Obviously did not play.
16:46People were wondering what the hell was going on because this was during a
16:49bi-week and Mayo would not say anything.
16:52Well, Baker did talk to the media today.
16:55He said he suffered his concussion last week in a bad car accident.
16:59And that he feels blessed to have only walked out of it with a concussion.
17:03He's now feeling good.
17:05So that's, I don't really need an opinion from Greg on that.
17:08I just wanted to share with the people what's going on with Jayvon Baker
17:11apparently got into a car accident.
17:13And, uh, that's what caused the concussion says that he feels better.
17:17Now we'll see if it matters because the guy has not been able to get on the
17:21field much as a wide receiver this season.
17:23All right.
17:23Before we get to a more Mayo and I want to get to Mike Vrabel, Greg,
17:28tell the fine people about prize picks.

19:04Steaming, sweltering takes steaming, hot takes hitting my microphone.
19:10And should we tell the people that they're coming to, to, to over
19:13the air airwaves near them, right?
19:16Yes.
19:17New year's day.
19:18Uh, what better way to get over your hangover than to hang out with Greg and I
19:21will be, uh, we'll be on 98 five together from, uh, 11 to two, not
19:26on TV because both of us are ugly.
19:29So we're going to go 11 to two, no 10 to two.
19:31We don't look like Phil Perry.
19:32So we've been knocked off television.
19:34So, uh, Greg's Greg's Greg's going to go topless.
19:39It's going to be threatening this via text.
19:42There have been threats sent.
19:44Uh, all right, let's get back to Mayo.
19:46Uh, so he's at the podium today, Greg, he deflected questions about the
19:50guaranteeing him a second season.
19:53Uh, he already was all over him.
19:55Yeah.
19:56I know you've said, uh, I know you've said that it's, it's most likely he comes
20:00back, but have you heard anything about a guarantee from the crafts?
20:04No.
20:05Um, you know, certainly they collectively, and I'm not sure exactly which one have
20:15been telling, you know, some people that, and, um, certainly they're getting that
20:19they have gotten that word out, um, through their, uh, let's see, uh, people
20:27in the media.
20:28Um, but I have not heard anything about them telling Mayo.
20:34I mean, they've been supportive of them and, you know, I don't think they've
20:38ever told them anything that like, you know, puts them in the crosshairs or what
20:43Um, but I think, um, the crafts are really good at it and I respect them greatly for
20:51this.
20:52Um, you know, they always give it the full 17 games.
20:55I mean, well, not in the case of Belichick's final season.
20:59Um, but you know, the writing was kind of on the wall at that point.
21:03Uh, but you know, they, they do a good job of doing the whole 17 games.
21:07Then they'll have a post-season meeting where they ask a bunch of questions.
21:10And, uh, depending on how those questions get answered, uh, they'll make their
21:15decisions.
21:16Do you think the Cardinals game moved the needle at all for the crafts?
21:22Uh, well, let me put it this way.
21:25Um, if it didn't, they're not doing their job as owners.
21:29Um, and somebody needs to tell them that.
21:32I mean, because how could you not, you come back from the, by the team was
21:37absolutely abysmal in, on offense and defense.
21:41It was horrible on offense, the defense, it was the same crap that we've been
21:46seeing all season.
21:48And then, you know, Gerard Mayo says what he says, you said it, I didn't, it was
21:52complete, it was a completely unprofessional comment from a head coach after a game.
21:59Uh, and it wasn't the first time this kind of thing has gone on this season.
22:03Again, we've been talking about just show me improvement.
22:06Show me that you're learning on the job.
22:08Show me that you're, you know, what everybody loves to see, say, grow into the
22:12job, show me you're growing into the job.
22:14And, um, in, in, in no phase of a head coach's job has Gerard Mayo to me
22:21illustrated that he is growing into this job now that we have three games left in
22:26the season.
22:27And, um, uh, I, again, you know, I reported what I reported that it wasn't
22:35that, that Gerard wasn't a hundred percent back.
22:38I think I put it at like, you know, 90% at the time, you know, going
22:42into the final four games.
22:43Um, I think that that knocked a leg out, uh, on his case for coming back for next
22:49season.
22:50And I think the crafts, uh, are paying attention and have been paying attention
22:54all year.
22:55What moves the needle more if you're Robert Kraft, if you're making this
22:59decision, is it the game on Sunday against the Cardinals or was it the post game?
23:05That's a great question.
23:09I try, uh, I mean, I, I can only, I don't know what Robert thinks.
23:16I mean, you know, uh, I'd like to see Jonathan crafts notes, uh, on the game.
23:20We might be able to get a, uh, a glimpse of that, but, um, I can just tell you
23:26for, for me, it was the on-field product.
23:29I mean, you know, by week extra practice, padded practice, get some rest.
23:35Here we go.
23:35Cardinals Cardinals stink by the way.
23:38And they fall down 23 to three.
23:42Um, to me, that's it, that, that shows me a team that's not
23:46responding, uh, to the head coach.
23:48And then the, uh, unprofessional embarrassing post game performance
23:53was the cherry on top.
23:55If, and it's an F we know the, we know the schedule.
23:59If the next three weeks look like that.
24:05Do you think this thing gets blown up?
24:09I still think it's more even if, all right, let's just say it's, it's
24:14like Sunday against the Cardinals.
24:16I'm not really competitive on either side of the ball for
24:19large stretches of a game.
24:21Uh, the head coach, um, does not show well, um, either in game
24:27management or, and, or in the post game, I would still say it's more
24:32probable than not that may overturns for a second season, but it's.
24:38It's going to be pretty close.
24:41All right.
24:42We got to get to Mike Rabel, but before we do, we got to
24:45get to game time with Greg.
24:48The NFL season is winding down.
24:50You got to get out there to experience the game.
24:52You got to be there in person.
24:54You know, the TV is nice and I know you got the TV and you know, you got to be

25:01being in the stadium game.
25:04Time can help get you there.

25:24I was just looking on, on the game time app, uh, the chargers game,
25:29the next home game for the Patriots.
25:31I, I know last time I said you could sit in the lower bowl for one 63.
25:36Guess what?
25:36I just saw it.
25:37You could sit in the lower bowl for one 13.
25:41Well, all in, I also use it to get concert tickets for me and the wife.
25:44She's still talking about the concert.
25:46She keeps showing me videos from it.

25:58Download game time today.
26:00What time is it?
26:01Game time,
26:03Mike Rabel.
26:05Let's get to him.
26:06Let's talk about Mike.
26:07Uh, so Tom Curran, Tom E Curran was on early edition last night, Greg.
26:13And he mentioned, which I tweeted at Nick C radio.
26:16If you want to follow me, Vrabel is interested in coaching the Patriots.
26:20Okay.
26:21I don't talk to you about these things until we go into this podcast.
26:27Have you heard anything similar?
26:29To what Tommy Curran has heard about Mike Vrabel?
26:33Uh, I have and yes, he, he would have an interest in
26:40coaching the new England Patriots.
26:44And I think there's a pretty good chance that, uh, Josh
26:49McDaniels would come with him.
26:52Um, that's my understanding.
26:54That's what I'm hearing.
26:55I'm tweeting this before the podcast comes out.
26:57Be mad at me.
26:58CLNS.
26:59I'm going to tweet this, this information from, from Greg Bedard.
27:04All right.
27:05The million dollar question, Greg, if you are a Robert Kraft and you know,
27:12the back channeling that you could have Mike Vrabel and Josh McDaniels,
27:18would you pull that trigger?
27:21Uh, a thousand percent.
27:22Um, look, and it's nothing against Gerard.
27:25I think that, um, I, I don't disagree with the crafts in terms of, I think
27:31Gerard Mayo is, um, is a talented, uh, coach, um, leader, I think given time,
27:41I think he'll, at some point he will be an excellent NFL head coach.
27:46He's just, he's just not ready for this.
27:48And, you know, to me, the calculus that you have to do with the crafts is, I
27:54mean, you, I mean, they're smart business people.
27:56Um, you got to put a percentage on, on it, you know, given what the Patriots
28:02have at this point with Drake may a ton of calf space, a top three pick, um,
28:07a new football facility, uh, being built.
28:12What are the percentages that the Patriots, and it's not just Gerard,
28:17we're talking about Elliot Wolf, somebody who I have a lot of respect
28:20for, who I do think was qualified for his job.
28:23Um, just didn't execute it.
28:25Great.
28:25Um, this year, um, to say the least, uh, you, you have to, uh, number one,
28:34you can't worry about cost, anything like that.
28:36The simple question is put a percentage on it.
28:41You've seen Gerard Mayo from soup to nuts, from a player to now you've, you
28:45know, you know, what's going on behind the scenes with this team.
28:49What's the percentage that Gerard Mayo can in time, take this team to a
28:56Superbowl, uh, if not win a championship, what are the chances that Mike
29:01Rabel with Josh McDaniels can do the same thing to me, it's clear.
29:07And, um, you have to put personal feelings aside.
29:11You have to do what's best if you're really, truly care.
29:14And how many times we heard Robert Kraft talk about this, how he's a fan
29:18first and all this stuff, and, you know, it's the next to his family.
29:23It's the most important thing in his life.
29:24And the, you know, the football team is like a family to him.
29:28Um, you know, unless you're just full of crap, uh, you have to do what's
29:34best in the interest of the franchise.
29:37And I don't think, I don't know if there's anybody out there who could
29:41say that, uh, Gerard Mayo gives this team a better chance of winning a
29:46Superbowl than Mike Rabel and Josh McDaniels and you know, whoever else,
29:52maybe it's Brian day ball as his offensive coordinator, don't go, don't
29:55go too strong on the McDaniel stuff.
29:56I mean, I, that's, that's, uh, it's in the ether.
30:00It's being talked about in NFL circles, but I don't know that for a fact, but.
30:04Uh, I don't, I mean, I don't know how you feel about it, Nick, but to me, I don't
30:10think there's any decision to be made.
30:12If you have an opportunity to do that, you passed on them.
30:15And here's the other thing.
30:17I know there's a lot of, there's a lot out there about
30:20Vrabel and the bears and McDaniels and Vrabel, you know, going to the bears.
30:25All right.
30:26You know, okay.
30:27Maybe, I don't know.
30:28Does he really love that set up with the team president and the GM?
30:31They're not going anywhere.
30:33You got Caleb Williams, blah, blah, blah.
30:36Uh, you know, what if, what if they end up with the jets and you're facing them
30:42twice a year and they have a complete rebuild that they're doing?
30:45Um, I think all of that has to come into consideration, but to me, I, I, I don't
30:50know how anybody can make the argument that Gerard Mayo and everything that's
30:55around him right now, and even fixing it, bringing in, you know, different
30:59pieces around him or whatever is gives the Patriots a better shot at getting
31:04back to a Superbowl contender status than Mike Vrabel and a Josh McDaniels.
31:10Mike Vrabel was the one guy that I would have hired
31:12before Gerard Mayo last year.
31:14I said it at the time in real time.
31:16Uh, and there's nothing that's happened over the last nine to 10 months
31:20that would move me away from that idea.
31:22I would still take Vrabel over Mayo.
31:24Couple follow-up questions.
31:28The jets, they have interviewed Thomas Dimitroff and John
31:33Robinson for the GM job.
31:35Of course, Robinson worked with Vrabel.
31:37I, I don't know how that relationship is.
31:40Reportedly Vrabel was not happy when Robinson decided to trade AJ Brown.
31:44Um, so I don't know what that means, but as far as here, Greg, let's just
31:50hypothetically go down that road.
31:52Vrabel is hired as the head coach, whoever his OC is, whether it's
31:55McDaniels or it's day ball or Tommy Reese has been thrown out there.
31:59Boy, Tommy Reese's agents have been working pretty hard to shout out to them.
32:03All the time, but, uh, what does that mean for Elliot Wolf?
32:10Does, does, does Vrabel come in and say, I'll work with Wolf or
32:13does Vrabel come in and go, eh, this, this whole thing, because now you're
32:18putting the power in Vrabel's hands.
32:20And, and that's a question, isn't it?
32:23Yeah.
32:23Um, yes.
32:26Um, you know, it's an interesting question.
32:29I'll say, I think that, um, and this is where I was when, you know,
32:34they were letting go of bill.
32:36Um, you know, they have to make a decision on, do they want, do
32:42you want a strong head coach?
32:44You know, like, uh, you know, say like Kyle Shanahan, uh, model,
32:47or do you want a strong GM?
32:50And it's one way or the other.
32:51Um, I don't know how anybody can make the argument that Elliot Wolf should,
32:56should be the, a strong GM types.
32:58Cause you, you, you need alignment in the, in the building.
33:02Yeah.
33:02Um, that's the bottom line.
33:04You have to, you can't this piecemeal stuff.
33:06Like, all right, we're firing the coach, but Elliot Wolf is going to stay.
33:10We're going to bring in Mike Vrabel.
33:12I mean, this is like, this is what the jets do.
33:14I mean, it's just, it's just terrible.
33:17Um, they also, uh, one thing I also wanted to mention, Nick, and
33:20I forgot to put in a rundown.
33:22Uh, I don't know if you heard this, but, um, I was listening to
33:25Curran and I think he was on early edition or whatever, and he, he floated
33:31out, he thought it would be a good idea to have a, like football czar,
33:35like Bill Parcells in Miami.
33:38Uh, yeah.
33:39And Tom, Tom mentioned, uh, Tom mentioned Poli as a possibility.
33:43I will say though, Tom mentioned Poli, um, when Trini asked him for a name.
33:50So he, and he had just interviewed Poli and he admitted that, that, you
33:53know, Poli was top of mind because he just interviewed him for his podcast.
33:57And I think it was, who's the lawyer.
33:58Is it, is it Mike McCann or whatever his name is?
34:01Mike McCann.
34:01Yeah.
34:02Yeah.
34:02So that's the person who initially brought up the idea of Tom.
34:05And I think Tom's kind of working that idea on live TV.
34:09So I don't know if, I don't know if he works.
34:12Yeah.
34:12I don't know if three days from now, Tom will be behind that, but just
34:16the general idea of somebody above wolf, like Poli to vet everybody in the
34:21organization.
34:23Yeah.
34:23And I, I think me personally, I think that's a terrible idea.
34:26I mean, all the examples that I can think of, um, Bill Parcells in Miami,
34:32like you get a bump, okay.
34:33But at some point in time, it, it doesn't work.
34:37Bill Parcells in Miami, uh, with Tony Sperano and what have you, um, Tom
34:43Coughlin in Jacksonville worked for a time.
34:47It devolved, uh, Mike Holmgren in Cleveland didn't work about the only
34:53one that I can think of, and I'm not exactly sure of the timeline on when
34:57people were hired and things like that would be Chris Spielman in Detroit.
35:01Um, with Campbell and Brad Holmes, I'm not exactly sure who hired who or
35:07whatnot, but you can make the argument that that has worked a little bit.
35:11I mean, I think that, I don't know if Dan Morgan is considered that in
35:15Carolina or he's just the general manager, but whatever, um, I do not want to do that.
35:20Um, you know, I think, you know, when it comes down to it, say the
35:24Patriots do move on for Gerard Mayo.
35:26First of all, they're going to have to go through all the interviews anyways.
35:30Um, but part of those interviews, you know, with, I mean, especially if, um,
35:35you know, in, in, I think it would be great for the Patriots of Rabel McDaniel's
35:40tandem, um, you know, these guys have been around it.
35:44They've been head coaches before they know what works, what doesn't work.
35:47They've been in this building.
35:49Um, you get their thoughts on it, you know, let them, you know, what do they
35:55think and, um, you sort of go from there.
36:00The Chicago stuff, by the way, with Rabel, uh, my theory is that
36:04Vrabel saw what happened on Sunday with the Patriots.
36:07And, uh, I, I just don't think it's a coincidence because I don't
36:12think Chicago would be leaking that.
36:15I don't think it's a coincidence that right on the heels of what happened on
36:19Sunday, a report comes out and says, Hey, Vrabel and McDaniel's might
36:23be near the top of the list.
36:24I'm not doubting Bert Breer's information.
36:26I think somebody told Bert that, but I think the reason they told Bert that was
36:30to put the craft's feet to the fire, because if you want to pull at the
36:33heartstrings, you talk about the sentimentality of Robert craft all the
36:36time, Greg, if you want to pull at those heartstrings, don't
36:39forget who the first Mayo was.
36:40It was Josh McDaniel's baby.
36:42Don't forget about, Oh, we've got to pull them from Indianapolis.
36:44We'll give them more money.
36:46And we're not going to necessarily promise him the job when bill walks,
36:49but we're going to let them know that he could have the job when bill walks.
36:52And of course, McDaniel's ended up in Vegas, but McDaniel's was the first Mayo.
36:56He was the guy that the crafts were looking at as the next guy behind Belichick.
37:02Don't forget that.
37:03And so you've got Vrabel who has ties here and is close to craft.
37:06We know the hall of fame stuff last year, you've got McDaniel's
37:09who's very close to craft.
37:11McDaniel's lives in the area.
37:13Um, and it makes a lot of sense for him to stay here in new England and work
37:18with somebody that he knows very well in Vrabel working for an owner that
37:22he trusts and knows that loves him.
37:24So my theory is that was absolutely agent speak or Vrabel himself saying,
37:32yeah, you know what?
37:33Chicago loves me.
37:36Yeah.
37:37I mean, yeah, that, that could certainly be the case.
37:41It was very interesting timing.
37:43The other thing about Vrabel in Chicago, I don't know who it was, but I heard
37:47somebody mentioned that Vrabel has a relationship with Ryan poles, the GM.
37:52Yeah, I saw that too.
37:53I saw that too, but I don't know where that would have happened.
37:56Like, you know, polls was a player at Boston college.
37:59Um, he's from New York.
38:01He graduated Boston college in 2007.
38:05He was an undrafted free agent of the bears in 2008.
38:08He was a mate.
38:09Maybe they crossed pat.
38:11No cross paths as a BC grad assistant in 2008.
38:14That'd be weird.
38:15But he, he's basically a Scott Pioli disciple.
38:18So I don't know if there's any carry over there, but he was, he's only been with
38:21the chiefs before he went to the bears.
38:23I don't know where he would have gotten this relationship with Mike.
38:29Brings me the timing.
38:32How much does timing make this difficult to pull off, correct?
38:35Because variables out there, obviously he's working for Cleveland in this
38:38consultant job or whatever the hell the title is, but he's out there.
38:41McDaniel's is out there.
38:42They obviously want back in the game.
38:45And you've got craft who, as you said, likes to go through the full 17 game
38:49schedule, then kind of decompress and take his time if they're thinking about
38:55Vrabel, how much urgency do they have to show here, Greg?
38:58I mean, some, I mean, but I, I mean, I don't think the crafts, you know, I
39:06don't think it's going to go past a week past the end of the season.
39:09So I don't think that's, you know, if they move on from Mayo, I don't think
39:14the timing is going to be that big a deal because all these teams have to go through
39:17all these owner, these interviews and, you know, different rounds and our people
39:22in the playoffs and all this stuff.
39:24Unless you have some sort of assurances from Vrabel privately, which I would doubt,
39:28like they're going to have to go through the process, including interviewing
39:31Ben Johnson, who's going to be, you know, busy during the playoffs, uh, with
39:36the lions probably for a while.
39:38So I, I, I'm not too worried about that.
39:41Yeah.
39:41I think Chicago goes offense, whether it's Johnson or it's Kingsbury.
39:44I think that's what they do.
39:46All right.
39:46Before we get to the awful Arizona game for a few minutes, Greg's got
39:50You know, when it comes time to keeping my home comfortable this winter, there's
39:53nothing more important than having a reliable team to handle things like
39:56heating, cooling, and plumbing.

40:30It wasn't me.
40:30I'm a total, it wasn't you.
40:32No, definitely not.
40:33Hey, I'm a total amateur at this stuff.
40:35I have dumb questions and Nick was good with me.
40:38Scheduling was a breeze.
40:39Didn't have to wait for anyone to get back to me on installation day.
40:43They showed up on time before eight were gone by five.
40:46And even though it was a muddy mess outside, you couldn't tell when they
40:49were gone because they put tarps down.
40:51Oh, and all the work they did was perfect.
40:54This is a little nerdy, but I actually Nick like to watch and
40:58listen to my new boiler work now.
40:59Yeah, I'm kind of a nerd like that.
41:01Uh, Niterno isn't just about heating either.

41:42I trust Niterno.
41:43You should too.
41:46All right.
41:46Let's quickly go through this.
41:47I got lunch to eat and I don't want to deal with it too much.
41:50All right.
41:50Van Pelt versus Arizona.
41:52What the hell happened?
41:53Um, it was a complete debacle.
41:56Um, look, the point I want to make, and I wrote this for BSJ today, and I talked
42:02a little bit about it on Felger and Mass and, you know, you know, I see the
42:08tweets and all this stuff and I hear the post game commentary and everybody's
42:12like, but Arian low socks, Ben Brown sucks.
42:14Their offensive line blows.
42:16Um, what do you expect?
42:18They can't do anything.
42:19They can't block anybody.
42:21Um, and I'm not saying that's not true, but, and we've talked about this all year
42:28and we are now how many games, 14 games into this, um, football, football is a
42:38game, it's football on it's chess on grass.
42:41Okay.
42:42And in every matchup in football, I don't care whether you're pop Warner,
42:45high school, college pros, one team is going to have an advantage on the other
42:50team.
42:51Sometimes it's going to be great.
42:52Like Buffalo on Sunday.
42:54We don't expect much, but in a game like against the Arizona Cardinals, it's
43:01incumbent upon the coaches.
43:02And this was reinforced.
43:03I heard Tom, Tom Kern had a great podcast with, um, Scott Peely and Scott Peely
43:09kept talking about how, um, you know, there were times when they didn't have a
43:13lot of talent, but you know, it's about talent development and it's about the
43:16coaches taking what these players can do and doing what you can with it to try to
43:22win a game.
43:23Um, you know, he talked about it and we've heard this before about how, you
43:27know, whether it was bill Belichick or bill Parcells, don't tell me what a
43:32player can't do.
43:33Tell me what a player can do.
43:35And, you know, and that goes to Alex van Pelt going into this game, it's incumbent
43:40upon him in every single matchup to determine he's seen these guys all week in
43:45practice.
43:46They had extra practice.
43:47They had a padded practice.
43:49He needs to understand what the guys that he has at his disposal, what they can do
43:55and what they can't do.
43:57Okay.
43:57And stay away from the things they can't do, or might struggle with stay in your
44:01lane with things that they can do.
44:03And to me, I thought the game plan was completely flawed.
44:08Um, you know, and it's falling into a trap.
44:11Like, you know, it's like, and it's like this team in general, but you know, the
44:16Rams game, they do pretty good.
44:18Then they're like, Oh, not too much pressure.
44:20We, you know, we did a lot of good stuff.
44:21Or we're going to ease back on the stuff that we were doing.
44:24Then it's a disaster.
44:25Then they come out against the Colts.
44:27Very simple defense, not that overpowering.
44:30Hey, worked really well.
44:31Drake made his best game of the season.
44:33All right, let's, let's not continue that.
44:35Let's get a little bit more aggressive in what we want to do.
44:38And, uh, he did that again in this game to me, you know, watching the first half
44:44film was, I don't like to get in the hyperbole, but as far as I can remember,
44:52it was the worst film in the first half this year coming off of a buy.
44:57It looked like they hadn't practiced anything.
44:59And the, the two main issues in this were number one, Alex Van Pelt didn't
45:06anticipate the Cardinals playing more man to man, we talked about going into
45:10the matchup, second highest zone coverage rate in the league that was, we did our
45:15pod, I talked to an assistant coach after that, where they were like, go watch this
45:21game and go watch that game.
45:23Because when, when Jonathan Gannon, who's the defensive guy, the head coach,
45:27defensive guru over there, when he's not afraid of weapons, they play a lot more
45:32man and they're freaking pain in the ass.
45:35Um, Alex Van Pelt did not anticipate that.
45:37And he was not ready for that.
45:39And, uh, the Cardinals basically like, you know, shut them down.
45:43Um, a big issue was the Cardinals front.
45:47This isn't like the Colts front where it's four guys down, maybe the occasional
45:52blitz from Gus Bradley, but you're really not getting, it's really four guys.
45:56You know where they're lining up.
45:57It's not that hard to block.
45:59The Cardinals do a bunch of different fronts.
46:01You got overhanging linebackers.
46:03You got edge guys.
46:04Sometimes they're five yards outside the tackle.
46:07Sometimes they're head up on the tackle.
46:09There's a different aiming point all the time.
46:12So they weren't ready for that.
46:16Um, because what I saw on film was these guys, but Darian Lowe, Ben Brown, like a
46:20lot of times they didn't know who to block.
46:23They're like, all right, well, this guy's not where I anticipated.
46:26This isn't what we practiced against.
46:27Now, where do I go?
46:29And there were errors like that.
46:30And then the other thing was to compound it even more, Alex van Pelt coming out of a
46:36buy, they hadn't played a game in a week and not up to speed game speed.
46:40He ran a, he ran a ton of wide zone and he ran a ton of pulling, you know,
46:45power plays with two guys pulling both of those blocking schemes taken, uh, an
46:52enormous amount of timing and precision and they were not ready for it.
46:58They were, they had not practiced hard enough and I didn't, I didn't see them
47:02run duo, which is the simplest blocking scheme and what they've been able to do.
47:07Where, you know, you have two guys, double team, the guy in front of them
47:10and then go up to the linebackers.
47:12Uh, they didn't do any of that.
47:14Um, and to me, all of that compounded all the, you know, the talent level, it
47:20was a, it was a complete disaster.
47:23And to me, I mean, for example, you know, just to use, you know, one play as, as an
47:28example, everybody remembers.
47:30Um, I'm just looking for it.
47:32Cause I, uh, uh, okay.
47:34So everybody remembers the big holding penalty on the first drive Ramond Ray
47:39Stevenson, uh, or no, excuse me.
47:41I think it was Antonio Gibson.
47:43Um, cause it was ended up being like a 25 yard penalty.
47:46They should have first and 10 at the Arizona 18.
47:49Instead it's, uh, I think it's second and 20 or what have you.
47:53Um, that was shotgun empty.
47:58Um, it, it, it, it put a lot of stress on Layden Robinson.
48:05Who's a young guy.
48:06He's an undersized guy in that matchup with the, with the Cardinals front.
48:10And you're, you're inviting that kind of mistake.
48:14And that happened over and over and over again on the film.
48:18So to me, I thought it was an Epic coaching failure as far
48:22as Alex van Pelt in this game.
48:25And he exacerbated all the issues with this offense by getting way
48:29over his skis in terms of his, uh, his approach to this game.
48:33Is this defense actually getting worse?
48:36Yes.
48:37Um, without question.
48:38I mean, when you get, when you get to walk in touchdowns, um, you know, by the
48:45Nick and I know you've heard me say this before, there was no one in those gaps.
48:52Like they're on the goal line.
48:53There's no one in the second level.
48:55There was, you know, Sione talkie talkie on the first one is late getting in there.
49:00The second one, Kyle Duggar isn't lined up in the right place.
49:04Never gets there in time.
49:06It's, uh, it's bad.
49:08I mean, thank God for Christian Gonzalez in this game or else it
49:11would have been like 50 to three.
49:13Um, but it, and also, let me also add that Kyler Murray had a bunch of open
49:18guys that he did not see, especially on the, especially on the balls.
49:21He forced to Marvin Harrison against Gonzalez and also on his little,
49:25little beep beep runs for like four yards.
49:28There were guys open.
49:29Um, and you know, it's probably because he's like five, five, he can't see them.
49:33Uh, but, um, this game should have been a lot worse than it was.
49:38All right.

50:02Uh, you just gave us a lot about the offense, some about the defense, but
50:06your overall likes and dislikes from that game on Sunday.
50:09So let's go through it.
50:10Offense Drake may actually my highest graded game for him over, over the Colts game.
50:15I mean, he didn't have a lot.
50:16Yeah.
50:17I mean, because I mean, he made three special plays in the game, the throw to
50:22born the shovel touchdown, and then him.
50:26Calmly, um, seeing the all out blitz and just running around the corner and in,
50:31you know what I love Nick about that is that Drake may got to the end zone and
50:36just like flip the ball to the, to the ref and like ran off the field.
50:40Um, I, I love that.
50:42And I also, I don't know if you felt this way, but I did.
50:47Um, I kind of felt like he was, um, frustrated in that moment, just being
50:54like, you know, how many times I could have done this in this game earlier.
50:59Yeah.
50:59If we decided to do that, you know, how hard was that?
51:02You know, you're not exposing me to injury.
51:05Um, you know, so let, let alone, you know, what I said about Van Pelt, let
51:08alone his, his constant decisions, not to use Drake Mays full athletic ability.
51:13I mean, you know, I can't wait.
51:15I, I can't wait to watch Josh Allen run buck wild on the Patriots while Drake
51:22Mays playing like your handoff, uh, I'm going to do like, it's thank God.
51:29Can you imagine if Brian day ball got Josh Allen at rookie year and said, you
51:33know what, we're not running Josh Allen.
51:35You know, we're not, nah, we're not going to do that.
51:37No, it, it, it, it didn't happen because it would never happen
51:42because Brian day balls, not an idiot.
51:44Uh, but so, uh, but back to, uh, Antonio Gibson was freaking phenomenal in this
51:51game, only 16 plays and like I am for six plus place, that's a ridiculous percentage.
51:56He was awesome.
51:57He had a great blitz pickup.
51:59He had a great block on Marcus Jones's little, uh, flip pass, by the way.
52:04Can we get more than one of those plays a game?
52:07Like, is it too taxing for Alex van Pelt and the coaching staff to, I don't know,
52:11maybe have five, six, 10, 15 of those considering the talent that they have
52:16on this team, is that too much to ask?
52:18Stevenson was good.
52:20Good rebound game for him.
52:22Uh, I'm not going to Hooper was the best that I had out of the tight ends.
52:27He had a really nice run block early on in the game.
52:29Michael Wenu best game of the season.
52:32Clean sheets been a long time since I've said somebody's had a clean
52:36sheet on this offensive line.
52:37Probably back to when David Andrews was still playing that to
52:40Monterey Jacobs was pretty good.
52:42Defensively.
52:44Uh, let's see.
52:47Nobody on edge interior defensive line.
52:50No linebackers, Christian Ellis actually played a pretty good
52:54game, um, for the first time all year.
52:56I had him with three plus plays.
52:58He made a couple of dynamite tackles, got Kyler Murray in the open field
53:01at a nice, uh, pass tackle at the goal line to prevent a touchdown.
53:06Christian Gonzalez, uh, phenomenal.
53:09Um, and that's it.
53:10So the downs, uh, Jalen Polk is completely clueless out there.
53:18It looks like he's running a different offense.
53:20Um, he, his timing is just completely off.
53:24He doesn't run his routes the right way.
53:26I don't know what's going on with him.
53:28Uh, Keishon booty for dropping that interception that has to be caught.
53:33Uh, it was much easier catch than Hunter Henry's on the
53:36goal line the week before.
53:38Uh, but Darian low, he, he, he was terrible in this game.
53:42Um, five total quarterback pressures, four and a half stuff runs.
53:46Again, I will say that Alex Van Pelt was complicit in this, uh, Ben Brown.
53:52Alex Van Pelt, not as complicit because Ben Brown snapped two, two
53:56balls off his ass.
53:58Uh, so that's not really the fault of the offensive coordinator.
54:01Um, defensively, uh, Jelani Tavai, not good.
54:07See on talkie talkie, even worse.
54:10Uh, Kyle Duggar was horrendous.
54:13And what did I, what did I say in my column?
54:15So about Duggar, I was looking back on my season grades for him.
54:20Uh, and by the way, Duggar and Jabril peppers both combined for that 53 yard
54:24run that Gerard Mayo wanted to wipe, uh, from the front, from the record, because
54:28the defense wasn't that bad, uh, other than that, um, he missed, uh, Duggar
54:34missed two tackles for a total of 56 yards.
54:38He allowed three easy third down catches.
54:40Uh, like I said, he wasn't in the right gap in the, on one of the TD plunges.
54:44Uh, I look back on my grading.
54:46Kyle Duggar is a minus 24 in the last four games for me.
54:52Uh, and I think on the season, he's like a minus 28.
54:55So it's all been in the last four games.
54:57I'm sure he's playing through injury.
55:00I, I have no idea that he's, uh, I have no doubt that he's a tough guy, but man.
55:06He has not been good for in the last four games.
55:10All right.
55:10There you have it.
55:11Some likes and dislikes and just get ready because the bills are coming out.
55:15This should be a, this should be exciting on Sunday.
55:20Can't wait for May night again.
55:22I can't, I, I I'm so, so happy that I have to wait until 4 25 to watch this
55:28game and then report until midnight and 1 0 AM again, we'll talk to you later in
55:34the week.
