00:00:00All right, everyone, welcome back into another live edition of the Patriots Beat Podcast
00:00:29here on the CLNS Media Network presented by our wonderful friends over at PrizePix.
00:00:35And game time, it is Brian Hines, as always, with Alex Barth.
00:00:39We're both battling a little sore throat, loss of voice, so excuse us if our voices
00:00:44cut in or out or we have some, you know, throat clears throughout this show.
00:00:49But the Patriots are back from bye, kind of won the bye, thanks to Mac Jones and the Jaguars
00:00:55getting a win there and shooting the Patriots up in the draft order.
00:00:58So a good week off, rested, got some awesome college football I'm sure we'll talk about.
00:01:03We'll hand it over to you guys for a Q&A if you want to start putting your questions in
00:01:08the chat now.
00:01:09Anything college football, Patriots related.
00:01:11And we also got some Patriots news today on their day off.
00:01:14It was kind of a busy one, and we can start with kind of the biggest part of the day.
00:01:19They released wide receiver KJ Osborne.
00:01:23It was kind of reported as a mutual decision.
00:01:26You know, we've obviously seen him falling out of favor in that wide receiver room.
00:01:31Really since like Kendrick Bourne came back in week five, there was that one weird game
00:01:35in Chicago that, you know, Bourne was benched and KJ Osborne had this big role.
00:01:39But Osborne hasn't really held a role in this offense.
00:01:43They play in younger guys.
00:01:44His name was out there in the trade deadline.
00:01:47Rumors a lot, but he stayed, kind of felt like this was bound to happen probably sooner
00:01:53than we all expected it.
00:01:55It was later than we expected it getting released today, but Osborne's out.
00:02:00His spot is filled by Cole Strange.
00:02:02We'll talk about the first just initial thoughts, if any, on the KJ Osborne release today.
00:02:07Yeah, I don't.
00:02:08I don't know why this didn't happen sooner, I guess.
00:02:12So I was somebody saying they should move him at the trade deadline for whatever they
00:02:15can get, and we'll see how quickly he signs.
00:02:18He is eligible for waiver, so he could get claimed.
00:02:20It's a one year deal.
00:02:22I could see a team maybe putting in a claim if they know they want him.
00:02:27It's going to cost a little more than signing him to the minimum for the rest of the year.
00:02:30But again, you just, you get in without having to go to a free agency.
00:02:33But they should have traded him at the deadline.
00:02:35There were reports that could have gotten something for him.
00:02:37I know people say, well, what could you have gotten?
00:02:39Like literally anything.
00:02:41Literally pick, swap, turn a seventh into a sixth.
00:02:44Anything would have made sense.
00:02:46And then after that, Mike Reese had reported that he was going to get traded.
00:02:49Instead, they kept him inactive.
00:02:50So it didn't cost him anything in terms of like, he was inactive.
00:02:54They were still getting the kids on the field.
00:02:57They were still playing at least, you know, some of the kids, Jayvon Bakers, let him play.
00:03:01But Keishon Booty was getting more time.
00:03:03Jalen Polk continues to get more time than he was at first.
00:03:08You know, things like that.
00:03:09But yeah, I don't know what took him so long and we'll see, you know, was there any negative
00:03:13impact in the locker room?
00:03:14Just a guy that clearly wasn't happy with this situation.
00:03:17So it makes sense.
00:03:18I'm just, I'm really surprised it didn't happen sooner.
00:03:20Yep.
00:03:21Do you think we'll get some Jayvon Baker this last month?
00:03:24I mean, like, it's tough to say snaps are open because Osborne wasn't active, but do
00:03:29you think there'll be any sort of shift where, you know, Polk's been around that 20, 25 snaps.
00:03:35Do you think we get some Jayvon Baker in there over these last four games?
00:03:40They've talked about wanting to play the kids.
00:03:41Now he's the one kid that they seemingly won't play.
00:03:44They don't seem to think he's ready to go out on the field based off what they see in
00:03:48practice.
00:03:49So we'll see it, but I'm not getting my hopes up.
00:03:51Definitely.
00:03:53And then as I mentioned, with that roster spot, Cole Strange activated off the pup tomorrow
00:03:58was the deadline, the 21 day deadline to do so.
00:04:01So he's back.
00:04:02He's been working at center kind of in his return.
00:04:05They did say that was because most of his experience was at left guard as we've seen
00:04:09it through his first couple of years here, but they seem to kind of like him at center.
00:04:14Ben Brown's been playing better though.
00:04:16The last few weeks, Mike Reese and his Sunday notes kind of pointed to maybe there's a rotation
00:04:21there where, you know, they get both of these guys in Mayo has said, Cole Strange is one
00:04:26of these younger guys.
00:04:27They want to see snaps from down the stretch and center is obviously a new position.
00:04:31So how are you kind of seeing the center rotation this last month?
00:04:35Do you think it could be a rotation that sounds kind of crazy at that position and protecting
00:04:40Drake may, but they definitely have made it an emphasis that they kind of want to see
00:04:44Cole Strange in there.
00:04:45How do you see that kind of shaken out here?
00:04:47I hate, I hate the idea of a rotation.
00:04:49It's just not fair to Drake.
00:04:50You're putting way more on his plate that needs to be on there.
00:04:53And look, I think it would be good to evaluate Cole Strange at center.
00:04:56I think that would help.
00:04:57But if that's the cost, no, thank you.
00:04:58I'm sorry.
00:04:59Drake may is more important player disorganization than Cole Strange.
00:05:02He has one year left on his deal, right?
00:05:052022, 23.
00:05:06Yeah.
00:05:07Yeah.
00:05:08They'll have your option.
00:05:09They would have to do that this off season, right?
00:05:11I think I thought it's going into the third year.
00:05:13No, you're right.
00:05:14You're right.
00:05:15You want maybe two more years on his contract.
00:05:17Like, no, Drake may is way more important.
00:05:20They should not be.
00:05:22Don't do center rotation.
00:05:23That'd be a bad idea.
00:05:24You know, I'd like to say, put Cole Strange back at left guard.
00:05:26I still don't think Leighton Robinson's an answer there, but that's the one guy they
00:05:29will move heaven and earth.
00:05:31They will break every single rule to get that on the field.
00:05:33Like there's an insistence that Leighton Robinson needs to play.
00:05:37So if you don't think Ben Brown's a long-term answer, then yeah, you see what you have in
00:05:40Cole Strange.
00:05:41That makes the most sense.
00:05:42You could have the both of them on the field.
00:05:44And then next year, you know, right.
00:05:45All right.
00:05:46Cause I still think David Andrews is going to be back for one more year.
00:05:49Yeah.
00:05:50Okay.
00:05:51So now we have David Andrews.
00:05:52We have Cole Strange, you know, you know, Michael and when your interior set, we'll
00:05:54see what we get from Cade walls at right tackle, but like you could go in really only needing
00:05:58one spot.
00:05:59You go into the off season, only needing one spot and that's a big spot.
00:06:02It's left tackle, but it's only one spot.
00:06:04So I play him at left guard, but they're just stubborn insistence on Leighton Robinson playing.
00:06:11I think starts Cole Strange at center.
00:06:14Now we will see.
00:06:15Does Leighton Robinson get benched again?
00:06:17Cause if he does, I think you see Cole Strange move out to left guard and well, they don't
00:06:20have Michael Jordan anymore.
00:06:21I don't know who else they'd put out there, but I think maybe see Cole Strange go to left
00:06:25guard if, uh, if, if Michael Jordan struggles again.
00:06:29Yeah.
00:06:30The rotation that center would seem like a crazy idea, that position rotating two guys
00:06:34in there, especially cause Ben Brown's kind of turned it around these last few weeks and
00:06:38he's been, you know, trending in the positive direction.
00:06:42Do you want to take that guy out of that lineup?
00:06:44That would be interesting.
00:06:47Also along the offensive line, Caden Wallace came back at practice on Monday.
00:06:50So his clock kind of starts.
00:06:52He could maybe even factor into the equation this week.
00:06:55We'll see how he progresses throughout the week, but that would be a big one.
00:06:58If you can get him, you know, that right tackle positions kind of open with the Monterey Jacobs
00:07:02up and down.
00:07:05But if you could get him for the last month, Caden Wallace in there at right tackle and
00:07:09feel good about that.
00:07:10And he has a good month, you know, finishing strong.
00:07:13That's again, like now you go into the off season, maybe being like, okay, we only have
00:07:16to fill left tackle.
00:07:18So that would be a nice bump and boost.
00:07:20Make yourself feel good a little bit better about something else going in.
00:07:23If we got, you know, third round pick Caden Wallace playing well, uh, these last three
00:07:27or four games, we'll see how it ends up, you know, playing out.
00:07:30But if he's ready to go and he plays well, that would be kind of encouraging on the Caden
00:07:35Wallace front there.
00:07:37Yeah.
00:07:38That's a guy that is important to see.
00:07:39That's a guy that you want to know what you have in him.
00:07:41Cause again, if, if he's not the answer and I don't know that four games is enough time
00:07:45to figure out anything definitive, but you at least want to go and feel like, all right,
00:07:50like we don't need to go get a starting right tackle.
00:07:53Maybe you find like the vicarian low equivalent of a right tackling for agency and you sign
00:07:57him and you have that guy there as your plan B if it doesn't work out with Wallace.
00:08:01But ideally you'd like to see, well, I'll show you something that at least it's like,
00:08:04all right, we'll, you know, we'll get into the, the off season and, and we feel good
00:08:09about at least having a primary option or a tackle.
00:08:12Yeah.
00:08:13And that's his natural position too, which I think is important, right?
00:08:16Like, yeah, no more moving him to left.
00:08:18If you went into this off season and say you drafted Caden Wallace in the third round to
00:08:22be your offensive tackle, like you'd feel much more confident about that.
00:08:26So now if he gets three or four good games on tape, you'd feel much better going into
00:08:31next year with him at right tackle.
00:08:33Again, his natural position where he played so much at college.
00:08:36So those were kind of the big moves of the day.
00:08:40Again, KJ Osborne out at wide receiver, Cole strange back on the active roster, Caden Wallace
00:08:46likely soon behind him as he returns to practice.
00:08:49The one other kind of minor move was a practice squad expected addition.
00:08:54And that's John Parker Romo, a kicker.
00:08:57He was just with the Minnesota Vikings.
00:08:59He played four games while their rookie, excuse me, will record was on IR.
00:09:06He went 11 of 12.
00:09:07He had a lot of 55 first team, all XFL guy in 2023.
00:09:11So Joey Sly, he's, he's 27th in the league is he's got to make percentage just under
00:09:1780.
00:09:18I think it's right around 78 and a half percent.
00:09:21So he hasn't been, you know, he's been up and down.
00:09:23He's had a lot of misses in one score game.
00:09:25So, and he's on a one year deal.
00:09:26So get another kicker in here, some competition, and we'll see what, you know, Parker Romo
00:09:32can brain and how Joey Sly kind of finishes the year now.
00:09:36Yeah.
00:09:37I, a couple of rough weeks for Sly.
00:09:39So it's not surprising.
00:09:40And like you said, Sly's on a one year deal.
00:09:43So Parker Romo is the kind of guy you can bring back on a futures contract and maybe
00:09:47this is just getting ahead of that and whether it's Romo and Sly or Romo and another veteran,
00:09:54maybe Romo and a rookie.
00:09:55They're doing kickers again in the draft, like they need to have a competition again
00:09:59next year.
00:10:00I'm thinking go in with just one guy.
00:10:02So I thought Romo is good in the XFL.
00:10:05I thought he was solid in Minnesota.
00:10:06Not, not a bad guy to have.
00:10:09If you're going to set up a competition, I, maybe he gets to kick a game at some point
00:10:12this year.
00:10:13We'll see.
00:10:14But yeah, not a bad guy.
00:10:15If you're trying to set up a kicking competition.
00:10:16Definitely.
00:10:17Yeah.
00:10:18I went back and looked, you know, Sly and Mike Reese back to the Hill next summer, back
00:10:21to the Hill, baby.
00:10:22That's the best part of camp.
00:10:24That was the best part of camp.
00:10:26You don't have to be so involved in a quarterback competition next summer, which will be nice.
00:10:32So the Hill, the Hill and the camp and the kicking competition and camp will take over
00:10:38as the best part.
00:10:39But Sly, he has six misses.
00:10:42And if you take the 68 yarder out, five misses, four of those have come in one score games
00:10:48and one was the block for Seattle where they lose by three.
00:10:52He had a 33 yard miss first Miami and week five, and they ended up losing by five points,
00:10:58but they were in field goal range at the end.
00:11:00That was the Jalen Polk, you know, heel toe play.
00:11:02He had a lawn miss in Tennessee, which, you know, you go to overtime and then lose.
00:11:06And then he missed the 25 yarder against the Colts last week, which he ended up losing
00:11:10the game by one point.
00:11:11So you kind of sit here and say, again, you know, people did this with Chad Ryland last
00:11:16year.
00:11:17Say a few kicks cost them two or three wins here on the schedule.
00:11:20So bringing in another kicker, it kind of makes some sense again, especially with Sly
00:11:25on a one year deal, try to maybe get ahead of some shopping for next summer.
00:11:31But all I'm saying is you're ready to talk to Jonah Dalmas, Brian, you ready to do Jonah
00:11:35Dalmas all spring?
00:11:36I like the the Michigan kicker, Zavada, is that a yeah, he just he actually I literally
00:11:43says the last thing I saw before we got on, he's going back to school.
00:11:46Is he really?
00:11:47Yeah.
00:11:48Damn.
00:11:49So he tweeted like, let's win a national championship and said, I got one more in me.
00:11:53All right.
00:11:54Relax.
00:11:55What about Dragon?
00:11:56Keish?
00:11:57But yeah, he was the Minnesota's kicker.
00:12:02He's the one that's Milan Lucic's cousin.
00:12:04He's cousins.
00:12:05Yeah, that was a good one.
00:12:06There's 19 to 26 this year.
00:12:09OK.
00:12:10Maybe not.
00:12:11Although most of those misses are from 50 plus.
00:12:12So perfect inside of 40.
00:12:16Sounds like the opposite.
00:12:17The anti Joey Sly almost in a way.
00:12:19That's what that's.
00:12:20Bill's kind of kicker right there.
00:12:22Yeah, exactly.
00:12:24So we'll be doing kickers again.
00:12:26Always fun to do kickers, I guess, although it would be nice also just to have a good
00:12:29kicker.
00:12:30We don't have a kicker.
00:12:31Yeah.
00:12:32Don't have to worry about this stuff.
00:12:34Steven Gaskowski days.
00:12:35We miss those days.
00:12:37But that is the Patriots news again.
00:12:40Kind of a busy day off today.
00:12:42Couple roster moves there.
00:12:43So we will turn it over again.
00:12:45If you guys have any questions you would like us to answer free agency draft rest of the
00:12:51season players on the roster, throw them in the chat.
00:12:55I will start, though, a question to you, Barth.
00:12:58How do you feel?
00:12:59We have our initial first ever 12 team college playoff bracket.
00:13:04I can try to pull it up here.
00:13:06But how are you feeling about the first college football bracket and any thoughts from championship
00:13:13Saturday?
00:13:14Great day of football.
00:13:15Any thoughts on the bracket and the games on Saturday?
00:13:19Yeah, I mean, the day looked like it was going to be a bus, right?
00:13:22We got three blowouts Friday night and then Arizona State just completely ran Iowa State
00:13:27out of the building.
00:13:28Cam Scadaville was fun.
00:13:29It's another guy we'll talk a lot about for the Patriots.
00:13:33Cam Scadaville, I think, will be a popular name among Patriots fans.
00:13:38As for the bracket, I like it.
00:13:40I think they got most of it right.
00:13:44They got it right in terms of which teams got the buys.
00:13:47Clemson should not have jumped up that high to get a buy.
00:13:49I think they got it right that SMU is in.
00:13:52It is not an invitational.
00:13:53You have to earn your way into this.
00:13:56The big tweak I would have had is I think Notre Dame is too high.
00:14:01I would have dropped Notre Dame below Ohio State and honestly, probably below Tennessee
00:14:07as well, maybe to that 10 spot.
00:14:10I do love that we get Notre Dame-Indiana in the first round, like an on-campus game between
00:14:16two in-state schools.
00:14:18The first round games are awesome.
00:14:20SMU-Penn State, we'll see.
00:14:21That one could get out of hand.
00:14:23Clemson-Texas is a freaking, I mean, that's going to be a ton of fun.
00:14:28Tennessee-Ohio State battle up in Columbus.
00:14:30Tennessee's got to go up north, kind of high-flying offense versus more traditional, run-it-down-your-throat
00:14:37team and then Indiana-Notre Dame.
00:14:39The one thing I'll say, I know a lot of people have complained about with this new format
00:14:44now that you're seeing it in practice.
00:14:46I guess a lot of people didn't know about the, you had to win your conference to get
00:14:49the buy.
00:14:50A lot of people were surprised by that and so they're looking at it like, how does Arizona
00:14:55State, which wasn't even really ranked in the top 12, how do they get a buy?
00:15:00I do like that you have to win your conference to get the buy because the buy is valuable
00:15:07and with this, winning your conference still means something.
00:15:11So I think that that's good to maintain that.
00:15:14What I would do, because I acknowledge people look at this and say, well, Oregon's number
00:15:17one seed and they have arguably the hardest path to the playoff, which I don't think is
00:15:21wrong, but so what I would do, some people have said, well, get rid of the winning your
00:15:25conference and it's just top four teams get buys.
00:15:27Then you lose, unless you're one of those way down teams, right?
00:15:31The SC championship wouldn't have meant anything.
00:15:33Both those teams are getting in either way.
00:15:35What they should do is recede after the first, only after the first round, don't recede going
00:15:40into the semis.
00:15:42But for instance, so Oregon, instead of facing the winner, Tennessee, Ohio state, I would
00:15:46say Oregon should face the lowest remaining seat.
00:15:49So like if Clemson wins, they get Clemson and on and on and on.
00:15:53That's the one change I would make, but I think this is a good bracket.
00:15:56I think we're set up for some fun football, so I'm, I don't have a ton of problems with
00:16:00it.
00:16:01Yeah.
00:16:02I, it'll be interesting what they decide to do with the conference in the buys.
00:16:08Cause like you could sit here and say, like, I think the AP poll, like Texas was three
00:16:13and was Ohio state or Penn state four.
00:16:17And you're like the AP poll or the final college football playoff ball.
00:16:22Maybe the college football playoff poll, the AP poll has nothing to do with this.
00:16:26I know.
00:16:27But like you're saying, like Texas is probably the third best team in the country and now
00:16:31they don't get the buy because Arizona, Georgia, what should it be?
00:16:37Georgia?
00:16:38Yeah.
00:16:39True.
00:16:40But when you're confident, that's just most people's argument.
00:16:42Like there's most of these teams that aren't on by are better than Arizona state and Boise
00:16:48state there.
00:16:49So they, they should get the buys over, you know, one of the, one of these teams, but
00:16:53it is good.
00:16:54I think like you, you should be some rewarded for something, uh, for winning your conference.
00:16:59But I do like to mean something, the games, it can't just be the best team is on paper.
00:17:03Yeah.
00:17:04I do like the, uh, the receipt idea that would, I would keep it a little more fair because
00:17:08like you look like Penn state could just have a theoretical cake walk if they take care
00:17:13of their business right to the semifinals going through SMU and then Boise state.
00:17:18So I feel like if Penn state wins, Boise is a sneaky, tough matchup for them.
00:17:25Gente.
00:17:26Yeah.
00:17:27Gente nation.
00:17:28Yeah.
00:17:29No, I would, I, that's, that would be my adjustment.
00:17:31I would reseed it.
00:17:33Were you, um, I mean the big argument with the, the bracket SMU, Alabama, I, I get Alabama.
00:17:41If they played one-on-one Alabama would probably beat them and they're the better team talent
00:17:45wise.
00:17:46But I was in favor of putting SMU in there, you know, a three loss Alabama team.
00:17:52They lost to like Vanderbilt SMU.
00:17:54They get to their conference championship game.
00:17:56They shouldn't get hurt for playing an extra game.
00:18:00And you know, they came back against Clemson and lost off like a lawn walk off field goal.
00:18:04So I was in favor of SMU in there.
00:18:07Were you, were you SMU or did you think I should have done that?
00:18:11I say this as an Alabama fan, like, and to your point, well, you know, if SMU played
00:18:17Alabama, they'd, all right.
00:18:19Or if Alabama played SMU, they'd win.
00:18:21Okay.
00:18:22If I told you back in September, Vanderbilt would beat Alabama, you'd be like, no, they
00:18:25wouldn't.
00:18:26What are you talking about?
00:18:27Like, that's not going to happen.
00:18:28So, you know, there's a reason you play the games.
00:18:29All Alabama had to do was beat one of six and six Vanderbilt or six and six Oklahoma.
00:18:33This is not, I know people think of Oklahoma as a blue blood.
00:18:36This is not a good Oklahoma team is a bad Oklahoma team that I kind of quit at that
00:18:40point in the year, except for that one game, you didn't even have to win both those games.
00:18:43You just had to win one.
00:18:45Like, you know, so I, I, I had no problem with it.
00:18:49I, again, I think the games have to mean something.
00:18:51The games on the field have to mean something.
00:18:53It can't just be which team's better on paper.
00:18:56Alabama had its chances to prove it belongs and it didn't.
00:18:58And they lost.
00:18:59And, and if, if we're going to just take all the best teams on paper, why even play the
00:19:04season?
00:19:05Just announce the playoff before the season starts.
00:19:07Jim Nagy just wants to do who has the most NFL players.
00:19:10Right.
00:19:11Exactly.
00:19:12Which like, that's not what that that's what the senior.
00:19:13That was crazy.
00:19:14That was, of course the senior bullet guy, but that, that was a crazy take.
00:19:18So should be a, a fun playoff.
00:19:22Hopefully Texas goes to arch Manning man, watching Quinn Ewers against Georgia was rough.
00:19:27We saw four, three quarterbacks in that game.
00:19:29I guess arch played like two games, two snaps, but we saw three quarterbacks and the best
00:19:34quarterback didn't even play in that Georgia, Texas game, unfortunately.
00:19:39And then the Quinn Quinn Ewers, Kate club, Nick rematch of that Texas high school playoff
00:19:45game is pretty cool though.
00:19:47Yeah.
00:19:48That, that, that's fair.
00:19:49Indiana, Notre Dame, as you said in stadium in state, hopefully it's like snowing in Notre
00:19:54Dame.
00:19:55That'll be tremendous vibes.
00:19:56Tennessee, Ohio state should be a good one.
00:19:59Yeah.
00:20:00I'm a fan.
00:20:01It's going to be a fun bracket.
00:20:03Yeah.
00:20:04Lots of, uh, lots of, uh, draft prospects in there as well, which, uh, I'm sure we will
00:20:09talk plenty about as the playoff goes on, but that is, uh, your college football bracket.
00:20:15One more, one more.
00:20:16Uh, when we're on college football, cause we didn't get to it in the open bill Belichick
00:20:19stuff.
00:20:20Um, I'd, uh, I kind of figured I'd believe it when I see it now, I think so what's been
00:20:26reported today is bill Belichick has agreed to it, but UNC hasn't.
00:20:31I think that I'm not saying I don't believe the reports.
00:20:34I think the use of the word agree in the, the initial report is misleading just because
00:20:40if bill's agreed and UNC hasn't agreed, then they haven't agreed.
00:20:44It just means bill's willing to take the job, right?
00:20:46It takes both sides.
00:20:47So he dropped this 400 page page Bible, which is by the way, when, when does it go from
00:20:54a Bible to a manifesto?
00:20:55Cause bill had a 400 page Bible and Conor Stallions is a 600 page manifesto.
00:20:59Okay.
00:21:00So probably like page 500, it changes from Bible to manifesto.
00:21:04I just, I just want to read both.
00:21:05I really want to read both, but I would love to read 100 page Bible.
00:21:11Yeah.
00:21:12On the chancellor's desk or whatever.
00:21:13And he's like, here are my rules.
00:21:16If you want me, let me know.
00:21:18So we'll see if UNC, uh, agrees on to it.
00:21:22What do you just think though about bill in the, in the college game, like he had the
00:21:26whole thing on McAfee where he's, you know, saying how it's just going to be this pathway
00:21:31to an NFL program.
00:21:33And he's going to set it up where, you know, there's basically, it sounds like there's
00:21:36going to be a GM and then he is running his coaching staff.
00:21:39So it sounds like it's going to be run like an NFL program, which is kind of how the college
00:21:44game is evolving with NIL in the transfer portal and everything.
00:21:48But it's still a 72, 73 year old bill Belichick, you know, recruiting high school kids and
00:21:54dealing with people that are in class and all this just, it feels like an interesting
00:21:59setup.
00:22:00Look, I think a lot of these programs right now are being run more professionally.
00:22:04Like Alonzo Highsmith.
00:22:05We talked a lot about is what the Patriots now is essentially the GM at Miami for the
00:22:10hurricanes last year.
00:22:11So it, it, it's the right time.
00:22:15I don't think bill would have done this a few years ago.
00:22:18I think he can make it work because that's the pitch is what you were talking about with
00:22:23the pipeline is I, you know, I'm the greatest NFL coach of all time.
00:22:28If you play for me, no other coach is going to get you more ready for the NFL than I am.
00:22:34And players whose main goal is to get to the league, which is a lot of them like that's
00:22:39going to resonate.
00:22:40I'm going to go play for bill for two years, three years.
00:22:44Now I, so he's talked about, there was some talk that like he'd move on after two years,
00:22:48he might have to do three to make this really work.
00:22:51Cause the idea would be, that's how you're getting that initial recruiting class.
00:22:54Because they're going to be with bill all the way through.
00:22:57And then they, you know, declare earlier or whatever, but you know, those players.
00:23:01And then I think, you know, teams around the league, you're going to get more interest
00:23:06from, from those teams around the league.
00:23:08It's like, okay, this guy was coached by bill.
00:23:10He's ready for it.
00:23:11He knows what's what comes with it.
00:23:13Um, also the Patriots, by the way, just, uh, released that make those Sean Banks.
00:23:21Yeah.
00:23:22Keyshawn bank.
00:23:23So that's how they got, they didn't make the Parker Romo movie official, but that's
00:23:25how they got the, uh, the Ross.
00:23:26Sorry.
00:23:27Um, yeah.
00:23:28So anyway, like that's the recruiting pitch and, and the idea of a pro program in college,
00:23:34it's been done before.
00:23:36It's not, I'm sure the way bill's going to do it as new, but the overall concept of that,
00:23:42it's been done.
00:23:43It's done with mixed results.
00:23:44You look at, um, you look at, I would say the great success of that sort of attempt
00:23:52was Pete Carroll.
00:23:53Now Bill's not Pete Carroll.
00:23:55They have very different personalities, but Pete Carroll came from the NFL, went to USC
00:23:59in installed a more professional like program and had a ton of success out there.
00:24:04You look at the flip side of it would be a guy like Herm Edwards in Arizona state, which
00:24:07ended very badly.
00:24:08Um, now Bill's a lot closer to Pete Carroll than he is to Herm Edwards as a coach.
00:24:13So I think it would go, uh, it's not totally unheard of.
00:24:16I'm sure the way again, bill would do it is different than the way Herm Edwards did it
00:24:20or the way Pete Carroll did it.
00:24:21And the NIL thing is just going to make that part of it.
00:24:24Um, but I, I, I think he'd get buy-in from players if they hired him, he'd get buy-in.
00:24:29The problem is so many of these hires, the way these college programs look at it.
00:24:35It's not like the NFL where you go and you say, all right, you know, we're making this
00:24:42higher with the idea of we're going to win one super bowl in the next five years.
00:24:47That's the way that a lot of these teams look at it.
00:24:48And you just know there's going to be ups and downs and bumps.
00:24:52The colleges want sustainability.
00:24:53They want, cause they got to keep their donors engaged.
00:24:56They got to keep their, uh, boosters engaged.
00:24:58They got to keep the students engaged.
00:25:00They got to keep, you know, recruits wanting to come, all of that.
00:25:03So you don't really have as much of a short-term outlook and bill Belichick 72 years old.
00:25:08And there's this pipeline plan for Steve, but that to me is kind of what it's going
00:25:13to come down to is what they think of Steve, because you, you want an element of sustainability.
00:25:18You want the program to be relevant after bill leaves, cause bill's not going to be
00:25:21there for a while.
00:25:22And I think that's what their kind of way you're going to invest this much money and
00:25:25all that.
00:25:26Yeah.
00:25:27I think like, again, it goes, I think they were saying like there's 13, 12 or 13 trustees
00:25:31that are now deciding what to do at UNC.
00:25:33So Steve is going to be a big part of that.
00:25:36And just financial funds is also going to be a big part of this.
00:25:39Like I think UNC is NIL money was like 4 million last year.
00:25:43You're going to have to pay Belichick maybe double or triple that.
00:25:47And then his staff, and then this general manager that's coming in and then probably
00:25:52up your NIL package to get his players.
00:25:54So that, so I saw something that said, like, you're talking about quadrupling the spending
00:26:00of the program with bill, which might be worth it, but that money's got to come from somewhere.
00:26:05And I think that's probably what's going on right now is they're leaning on boosters to
00:26:10see how much of this money they can actually raise.
00:26:13Yeah.
00:26:14So probably wouldn't apply to UNC right now if I was blind to colleges, because tuition
00:26:18is about to go way up, way up.
00:26:21I mean, I probably would apply because I get, I get to, you know, build Belichick and be
00:26:24coaching my football team, but it would also just football, football standpoint, like how,
00:26:33like a diverse or like how in depth is he going to get from a scheme standpoint?
00:26:39Like what can he run with these college kids?
00:26:41Can he develop?
00:26:42We've talked so much about him.
00:26:45Part of the reason he's not here is because he couldn't identify some college talent and
00:26:48identify, you know, those younger players when they got into the league, like, is he
00:26:52going to be able to identify and develop high school wide receivers now, all of a sudden,
00:26:57like the football stuff too, would be really interesting.
00:27:00So I, I ultimately wish he would get a job in the NFL because I think that would still
00:27:06be the most fun, but it would, there are some interesting storylines I think to follow if
00:27:11he still ends up at the college level here.
00:27:13I mean, that's why it'd be fascinating to see who he hires as GM.
00:27:17And we've heard, you know, about Patricia and McDaniels and all these guys following
00:27:20him on the coaching staff.
00:27:23Does he bring a GM with him from the NFL or does he get somebody that's more well-versed
00:27:27at the college level in with the recruiting stuff to basically run recruiting?
00:27:32I don't think Bill's running recruiting.
00:27:34I think he's going, he's going to recruit, but I don't think he's like setting the board
00:27:39in.
00:27:40I don't think he's like, I don't know.
00:27:42I can't expect him to do that.
00:27:45I would think he'd be more of, you know, you get, I'll help you sell the players on coming
00:27:51here and then get me the players.
00:27:53I don't think he's the one coming up with the big picture recruiting strategy.
00:27:56The guy I wonder who's done a very successful job as a recruit, and I don't know if there's
00:28:00a lateral move or not.
00:28:01I wonder if Jed Fish would get a call.
00:28:03Jed Fish has done a great job in Arizona and out Washington and does he want to be a GM?
00:28:08Does he want to coach?
00:28:10Maybe not, but like he would like, I would think he would look for like a Jed Fish kind
00:28:15of person.
00:28:16Somebody with that background, that NFL and college background that has experienced not
00:28:19just recruiting, but recruiting in the NIL era to, to help lead that.
00:28:23Yeah.
00:28:24That would be interesting.
00:28:25He could come with Steve.
00:28:28He's also, Bill's always been really close with Brett Belima, right?
00:28:32And I know he's a head coach.
00:28:34Yeah.
00:28:36GM at UNC is probably not a step up from head coach at Illinois, especially the way the
00:28:40team's going right now.
00:28:41Yeah.
00:28:42But maybe just another tie there down the line or, or something.
00:28:46So it'll be interesting again, it seems like Bill's on board by his set of rules.
00:28:50Surprise, surprise.
00:28:51And now we'll have to see if UNC wants to follow there.
00:28:55So we'll keep keeping tabs on that and seeing what happens with Bill there.
00:29:00So let's turn it over to you guys.
00:29:03There's lots of combo in the chat very quickly.
00:29:07Before we do that, I'm going to try to tell you, talk to you guys about prize picks where

00:29:52That's code C L N S to get $50 instantly after you play your first $5 lineup on prize picks,
00:29:59win your game.
00:30:00All right.
00:30:02Uh, start off with some current Patriots talk, talk here, Barth.
00:30:06What are you looking for?
00:30:08These last four games of the regular season, uh, kind of already talked about it, but you
00:30:14know, just playing the kids.
00:30:15What you're getting from those young guys, Caden Wallace, Cole strange, the receivers
00:30:18say, I think that's the most important development in just some sort of growth, some sort of,
00:30:24of linear improvement from the coaching staff, the team as a whole, just building towards
00:30:28something, getting some momentum going into 2025.
00:30:30You know, we, we've talked about Dan Campbell starting Oh, and 10 finishing three and three,
00:30:34like that kind of thing.
00:30:36And that falls on the coaching staff too.
00:30:38And Gerard Mayo, you want to see that growth, uh, with him and that staff as well.
00:30:43We talked a lot, a little bit more in depth about that, I think in our last crossover
00:30:47with Taylor and Mike last week.
00:30:48So if you want to go back and you, you can listen to that, but yeah, growth from the
00:30:52young guys, growth from the coaching staff, uh, you want to end on, on kind of a high
00:30:56note, uh, here.
00:30:57But speaking about Mayo, Joe asks, is his job only in trouble if Ben Johnson is interested
00:31:04or is it in trouble anyway?
00:31:05Uh, any potential other names for the job?
00:31:08If Mayo is out, uh, are you, or are you out with kind of just Gerard's job status right
00:31:15now?
00:31:16And has Ben Johnson, someone who would potentially interest you, uh, if he, another UNC guy keeping
00:31:21the theme alive here.
00:31:22Yeah.
00:31:23There's this whole UNC thing going on right now.
00:31:25Drake may shows up and now it's the most popular school.
00:31:28Um, look, if Ben Johnson's interested, I'm interested.
00:31:32I don't think he's going to be interested if Ben Johnson's interested.
00:31:35Yeah.
00:31:36You certainly take a long look at that, especially if he's interested before you've even moved
00:31:40on from the coach.
00:31:41Um, I wouldn't, I, so I I've talked about this a lot, like I do worry that, and there's
00:31:50absolutely a case that Gerard Mayo should not keep his job.
00:31:53There's absolutely a case just based on the product on the field.
00:31:57There's also just an element of the brand as a whole.
00:32:00And given the nature in which Gerard Mayo was hired, the conviction ownership hired
00:32:04with, they didn't even have a search, uh, the way he was talked about to give him the
00:32:08roster that they did and then fire him after one year, you're going to have a lot of coaches.
00:32:16Look at that.
00:32:17Like you're not going to get the prime candidates because they're going to say, well, that,
00:32:20you know, I, I don't want to be in that same position next year.
00:32:22It's going to take more than one year to get this roster back where it needs to be.
00:32:26And I don't, I don't want, you know, you only get so many chances at this as head coach.
00:32:29Do you want to use one on this situation?
00:32:31So if you know a guy like Ben Johnson, I'll throw Mike Drable in this too, because I've
00:32:34been asked about him.
00:32:35If you know a guy like Ben Johnson or Mike Drable is interested, then you take a long,
00:32:39hard look at it.
00:32:41If it's just like, oh, well, Ben Johnson says he wants to coach.
00:32:43So we're going to fire Gerard Mayo and go after him.
00:32:46And then suddenly you find out he's not interested.
00:32:48And, you know, I, I think you need to have a plan if you move on from Mayo, if Ben Johnson
00:32:54kind of lets you know, through back channels that he's interested, then you have a plan.
00:32:59And then that makes some sense.
00:33:00If not, you really risk.
00:33:03We all remember what happened last year with the coordinators, right?
00:33:05Where they, they're down to fifth, sixth, seventh options and Van Pelt's worked out.
00:33:10Okay.
00:33:11I would say like that one, you may, it may have worked out, um, but you don't want to
00:33:16be doing that at the head coach level.
00:33:18Yep.
00:33:19Also just with Ben Johnson, like I get the lion's offense is unreal.
00:33:26So fun to watch.
00:33:27Can we like, just stop crowning him as like a hall of fame head coach, please.
00:33:33Like imagine like everyone just all of a sudden assuming this guy is going to be like an amazing
00:33:38coach.
00:33:39I just, again, the scheme is good, but we've seen a lot of great offensive minds at offensive
00:33:45coordinator, not succeed as a head coach.
00:33:48I don't know.
00:33:49I've never talked to Ben Johnson, met Ben Johnson, been in one of his press conferences,
00:33:52but something about them to me just doesn't give off like those head coach vibes, especially
00:33:58sharing a sideline with like Dan Campbell and even Aaron Glenn, their defensive coordinator.
00:34:03Like those two guys give off more head coachy vibes to me.
00:34:06So I don't know.
00:34:07Again, his scheme is awesome, even though Troy tons of talent.
00:34:11So how would it look somewhere else?
00:34:13That's a big thing, you know, with that offensive line and everything, but just.
00:34:18I've seen way too much Ben Johnson praise, and again, he deserves a ton of it, but just
00:34:22stop crowning him as a surefire, like hall of fame slam dunk head coach.
00:34:28That's just my kind of thing with Ben Johnson right now.
00:34:32But if he is like, if you are moving on from Mayo, which I don't think is going to happen
00:34:37and he wants to, he makes it known that he's interested.
00:34:41Sure.
00:34:42That's definitely a path you could explore there because he probably would be a great
00:34:46fit with Drake May, but another person that someone thinks would be a great fit with Drake
00:34:51May.
00:34:52I'm seeing a lot of Ashton Gentee talk in the chat here.
00:34:55He'd be great for Drake May.
00:34:56He's the best prospect in the draft.
00:34:58All the great teams have good running backs.
00:35:01Is that someone who should be on the Patriots radar in this draft Ashton Gentee, man, it'd
00:35:06be nice.
00:35:08Sure would be nice, but no, they have too many other needs in premium positions.
00:35:13It's just, it's not going to be worth it.
00:35:17It's, it's not, you need impact players at impact positions.
00:35:20The other thing is like, I don't disagree that they should add a running back.
00:35:24This running back class is so freaking good.
00:35:26You can get a plus starting caliber player, probably third, maybe even early fourth round.
00:35:31So it's a fun thought and I'm going to bug Evan about it for the next four months and
00:35:36he thinks that I really want it.
00:35:38I know it's, it's just that they need players at impact positions and running back is, is
00:35:45I will knock down the running back.
00:35:48Don't matter people as much as I can, but objectively it's not an impact position.
00:35:52Quarterback receiver, offensive tackle, pass rusher corner.
00:35:55Those are the impact positions.
00:35:57They need a blue chip player at one of those positions.
00:36:01Also just improve the offensive line and I'm sure remandre Stevenson and Antonio Gibson
00:36:05will look better.
00:36:06As you said, there's so much depth in this running back class.
00:36:09One of the guys, two of the guys are bound to fall later.
00:36:12Use one of your late round picks, go get a, go get a running back.
00:36:17It doesn't even have to be like later round if they have the free agency that some people
00:36:20hope them to have.
00:36:21Like if you want to talk to me about America or Marion Hampton, Quinshaw, Junkins, Travion
00:36:26Henderson.
00:36:27Like I didn't even be in on one of those guys.
00:36:29I just think using what's going to end up being a top 10 pick on a running back is not
00:36:34what this team needs right now.
00:36:36Not feasible.
00:36:37Not feasible.
00:36:38Uh, what are your thoughts on Abdul Carter and if the Pats can get T Higgins in free
00:36:44agency, which Joe Burrow doesn't certainly doesn't think T Higgins is hitting the open
00:36:48market all of a sudden, uh, should they take Abdul Carter?
00:36:52What are your thoughts on the Penn state pass rusher?
00:36:54Yeah.
00:36:55First of all, I wouldn't buy that T Higgins Jersey just yet if I'm a Patriots fan because
00:37:01they that was a message to ownership from Joe Burrow last night.
00:37:05Joe Burrow doesn't just say something like that if he, right.
00:37:08So I still, I still have the chargers above the Patriots on T Higgins, a bingo card or
00:37:13wishlist or whatever too.
00:37:15So now maybe if they're going to pay Higgins, maybe Burrow's done with his buddy from LSU
00:37:20and that's another conversation to have.
00:37:22But realistically, I think we start talking about, we're going to start reading the tea
00:37:25leaves of what the quarterbacks are saying.
00:37:28We may need to look at Philly for that next wide receiver.
00:37:31And I think we've got a question about that too.
00:37:33AJ Brown, we we've heard he's unhappy.
00:37:37He's going to, he'd be great with the quarterback like Drake may.
00:37:40He's going to get his share of the targets.
00:37:42There's nobody else here really to throw the ball to besides Hunter Henry.
00:37:44I'd be all in on AJ Brown.
00:37:46He doesn't even need a new contract.
00:37:48He might still want one and you might still rework it to add years to it, but he's not
00:37:51even like one of these pre-agent guys.
00:37:53Um, what was the original one again, uh, Abdul Carter, Abdul Carter.
00:37:58So yeah, good player runs kind of hot and cold stylistically.
00:38:03How does he fit?
00:38:04Like he's one of these, just pin your ears back, get upfield and go.
00:38:08He's not a very disciplined rusher.
00:38:11Doesn't offer a ton against the run.
00:38:12If you're okay, drafting what might be a situational player in the top 10.
00:38:17Yeah.
00:38:18There's a case for it.
00:38:19This team needs a pass rush and he's a hell of a pass rusher, but he is, I think he might
00:38:23end up being a situational player at the NFL level.
00:38:26So that's my thing with him and a fit with new England.
00:38:30Like they need a plan for him because he's not the prototypical bill Belichick pass rusher
00:38:38where he's going to set the edge, make plays in the run game.
00:38:41He's going to try to use his athleticism, slip blocks, make plays in the run game like
00:38:45that.
00:38:46But we did hear, you know, all off season, they wanted to be more aggressive.
00:38:51They bring in drew Wilkins from Baltimore.
00:38:53Who's doing some of that Mike McDonald stuff on defense.
00:38:56That is what fits Abdul Carter.
00:38:58Like move him around.
00:39:00If you just put him on the edge all game and say, go like, that's a waste of his talent.
00:39:04You want to move this guy around.
00:39:05You can certainly rush with that athleticism.
00:39:08Just so twitched up.
00:39:09He's going to dominate the pro day combine.
00:39:11If he tests the athleticism, you know, let him rush, let him rush over the center.
00:39:16You know, he can stand up.
00:39:18Like we all see Micah Parsons, you know, does, does the basketball stuff.
00:39:21That's the name.
00:39:23And then, you know, rush, rush through the a gap.
00:39:27You can even use them in coverage.
00:39:28He wasn't off ball linebacker before we moved to the edge this year.
00:39:31You know, some of that drew Wilkins, Mike McDonald, Raven stuff, where you're running
00:39:35these SIM pressures and you can drop them back and let them use that athleticism and
00:39:39coverage.
00:39:40Like I'm a big fan of the player, but they need to have a plan for him.
00:39:45Because again, like, as you said, if you just stick them on the edge and you're like, just
00:39:49play there, rush the quarterback.
00:39:52Like he's going to get attacked at points in the run game.
00:39:55You saw, you know, the ducks do that in the big 10 championship game and he's going to
00:39:58run past the quarterback at times with the athleticism as a pass rusher.
00:40:01So that's not their style, but if they are leaning into this kind of other stuff, then
00:40:06I think he would be a really good fit there.
00:40:08So a, we have to see who's coaching the defense next year.
00:40:12Are they going to make a change with the Marcus Covington?
00:40:14But if they are going to lean into more of that, like then I'm much more open to Abdul
00:40:18Carter because I think the plan for him would fit better and fit his skillset and let him
00:40:23be more versatile and move all over the place.
00:40:27Yeah.
00:40:28That's, that's a good point.
00:40:29It's going to come.
00:40:30What's the defense going to look like next year?
00:40:32Yup.
00:40:33And then, yeah, AJ Brown, as you said, that would be my dream target.
00:40:36I don't know.
00:40:37He was traded for a first and a fourth, so I'm guessing Philly would want that back if
00:40:42they can.
00:40:43I mean, new England's going to have a high second and two thirds if you could make something
00:40:47happen there.
00:40:48Or if you trade down and pick up another pick somewhere, but AJ Brown, I think that would
00:40:53be or you do with the Vikings wide receiver target or you do with the Vikings tried to
00:40:58do last year, which is you trade whatever it is.
00:41:0034, 35, 36 for a pick in the twenties and that's the pick you trade for AJ Brown, right?
00:41:06Yup.
00:41:07They can get creative.
00:41:08They have the flexibility to get creative.
00:41:09So that's the one thing they have is flexibility.
00:41:11They have a ton of flexibility right now.
00:41:15It's a four top 80 picks the way the Falcons have been playing.
00:41:20I think that pick is like 76 or 77 high up there in the top of the third round.
00:41:25So they will have the flexibility.
00:41:29Speaking at receiver, do you think I'm guessing this is Travis Hunter?
00:41:32Is he coming out as a wide receiver or a corner?
00:41:36Do you have a preference on that or are you leaning one way or another?
00:41:40What is the team with the first overall pick one to play?
00:41:42I think that's what it comes down to.
00:41:44Well, if they're picking a quarterback, uh, or it's the Raiders right now.
00:41:50So that's the door giants, maybe.
00:41:53I don't know if they talked themselves into cam ward or something, but, or Sam Darnold.
00:41:58Yeah, there you go.
00:42:00But I don't just, if you, if you're picking number one, say, do you have a preference
00:42:04with him?
00:42:05That's going to be the big thing.
00:42:06You have to figure that out.
00:42:08Like talking about players, you need a plan for if you draft them, that is Travis Hunter
00:42:13to a tee.
00:42:14So do you have just a preference at either one of those spots?
00:42:18Yeah, I, uh, if like overall, I think he's a better corner.
00:42:24And if I'm advising him, I'm telling him to play corner.
00:42:26Like, yeah, you might get one $30 million contract as a receiver.
00:42:29You're going to get three $20 million contracts as a corner because you'll last longer.
00:42:34Um, but from the Patriots point of view, like if they're taking him, I would, I work him
00:42:40mainly at receiver.
00:42:42And then maybe in certain matchups, you use him as like a third down matchup corner.
00:42:46But if the Patriots taking him, they should take him as a receiver, especially if you
00:42:50get an AJ Brown or T Higgins, you get that big X on the outside.
00:42:55Now you have that guy at the X cause hunters is Z slot.
00:42:58He's not an X.
00:42:59He's not playing on the outside of the NFL.
00:43:01So you have the free agent acquisition.
00:43:03That's your big outside guy.
00:43:05You have, and then you have Hunter pop Douglas, Kendrick Bourne, kind of rotating those other
00:43:11two positions.
00:43:12I don't know what you're doing about the line.
00:43:15Like you got to really knock that out of the park and free agency, but that'd be a hell
00:43:18of a wide receiver group.
00:43:19Yeah.
00:43:20He was more impressive.
00:43:21I was watching some of them last week.
00:43:23He was more impressive at wide receiver than I thought going into that.
00:43:27So I could see him.
00:43:28Maybe he's gotten much better at wide.
00:43:30Like he was not this good wide receiver last year.
00:43:32Definitely.
00:43:33He is definitely grown in that area.
00:43:35So maybe that is something, you know, for a team like new England that needs the talent
00:43:39on offense.
00:43:40And that's something they more explore.
00:43:43But again, you need that plan if you do draft them.
00:43:46And if you do draft them as a wide receiver, any round two offensive tackles, you like
00:43:52Josh Simmons, Josh Connerly, who played pretty well against Abdul Carter for Oregon there.
00:43:58Does Ariante Ursary fall anyone else?
00:44:00I know you are not a fan of going offensive tackle around two as we speak right now.
00:44:06But just what do you think of that group of players right now?
00:44:12So on Simmons, I know a lot of Patriots fans are excited because they're all looking for
00:44:17like drafting a tackles, eating your vegetables, right?
00:44:20That's what that is.
00:44:21And they're all trying to figure out how do we get the shiny new toy, still find a way
00:44:24to eat our vegetables.
00:44:25How do we get the wide receiver in round one and still address the tackle position?
00:44:29So everybody looks at Josh Simmons and says, well, here's a guy that would have been a
00:44:32first round pick, but we can get him in the second round.
00:44:34Why would you get?
00:44:36In the second round.
00:44:37Remind me again.
00:44:38Why are you getting in the second round?
00:44:39That's right.
00:44:40Cause he tours ACL and he might not be ready for the start of the season and he might not
00:44:41be the same player.
00:44:42And that's a half measure.
00:44:43And that's what they've been doing at left tackle for almost a decade now.
00:44:46And they cannot continue to do it.
00:44:48They need a, they, they need an answer at the left tackle position.
00:44:52Well, you, you know, you draft him and then he assigned, you know, Garrett Bowles is a
00:44:57brick.
00:44:58No, you're signing Garrett Bowles to start.
00:44:59So I, I'm not against taking Josh Simmons overall.
00:45:02He does not solve the answer at left tackle.
00:45:04If they draft Josh Simmons to me, they still have a question left out going into the season.
00:45:08Connerly is an interesting one.
00:45:10So he was the number one recruit in that class with Kelvin Banks and Will Campbell, but he
00:45:16didn't start as a true freshman, which those two did.
00:45:18I'm still not entirely convinced Josh Connerly is coming out.
00:45:21He might stay in school because he will be a first round pick next year.
00:45:26So unless he declared today and I missed it, I get, Oh, well, he won't till after the playoff,
00:45:30I guess anyway.
00:45:31So we'll, we'll wait and see what happens with Josh Connerly.
00:45:34To me, if you're going to do it, that's the best option.
00:45:37If he stays on day two.
00:45:39Now the problem is, is he going to stay on day two?
00:45:41Cause he's going to have this run in the playoffs where, you know, Oregon's going to get, you
00:45:46got to remind me of the bracket again.
00:45:47I, uh, they're going to get Ohio state.
00:45:52So that might be Jack Sawyer.
00:45:54You're going to get Ohio state or Ohio state or Tennessee, which is two elite rushers.
00:46:00Yep.
00:46:01For the Vols, probably get Texas or Clemson, uh, Clemson.
00:46:05I forget his name.
00:46:06They have a really good edge rusher, Texas.
00:46:08I'm sure does.
00:46:09And then we'll see in the championship could be Georgia could be Penn state, Abdul Carter
00:46:13again.
00:46:14Um, he might not stay as a second round pick for long, but when you're talking about him
00:46:22or a guy like Ursary, I wouldn't rule out the idea of like, we need to start thinking
00:46:27about it as their second pick and not the second round.
00:46:31If you want to go receiver at the top and you want to take a left tackle, you need to
00:46:35be willing to move up from that pick.
00:46:37You need to be willing to move up.
00:46:38Do you know, do you move up into the twenties and take Connerly or Ursary there?
00:46:42That's realistic.
00:46:43I don't know about round two, but pick two.
00:46:46I think those two guys are in play.
00:46:49Yeah.
00:46:50Yeah.
00:46:51That, that playoff bracket right there, he has the chance to be one of those risers that,
00:46:55that we talk about and help himself, uh, cause there's always going to be that bunch
00:46:59that have a really good college football playoff.
00:47:01You kind of saw it with, you know, Michael panics last, last year, like he dominates
00:47:05Texas in that game and then he's top 10 pick.
00:47:08So you, you're going to see some of those risers, uh, like that.
00:47:12And he has a chance with those, with those guys, he's going to go against, you know,
00:47:15Michael Williams, someone David says is better than Abdul baby place him in the championship
00:47:19game.
00:47:20If it's a Penn state or not Penn state, Georgia versus Oregon there.
00:47:25So he'll have a good gauntlet of rushers that, that could raise his draft status there.
00:47:29But, um, we'll do a few more here before both of us lose our voice about, uh, before we
00:47:36do that, uh, we all love going to football games, hockey, basketball, any game live,
00:47:42and we make sure to use the game time app when we do so.
00:47:45And they have a new feature called game time picks that makes getting tickets to see your
00:47:49favorite teams play live even easier because it filters out the fluff to show you only
00:47:53incredible deals on great seats.
00:47:55So you don't have to waste time searching through thousands of tickets.

00:48:48That's it.
00:48:49Game time.
00:48:50All right.
00:48:51A few more.
00:48:52Let's try to find a couple.
00:48:56David is just going off on Ashton Gentee in the chat right now.
00:48:59David loves Ashton Gentee.
00:49:01You better hope he doesn't get a good run defense in the college football playoff and
00:49:05get shut down.
00:49:06And then you're going to get the mountain West haters coming at you.
00:49:09I mean, look, good player, fun player.
00:49:11He just not, not doesn't make sense for the Patriots right now.
00:49:15Definitely.
00:49:17Ryan has his whole off season plan worked out adding T Higgins, Travarius ward, Will
00:49:21Campbell, Jack Sawyer, Trey Henderson, major Taylor is 1000%.
00:49:26The goal.
00:49:27I don't know any of those free agents or draft targets.
00:49:30Do you guys, you like, I mean, yeah, T Higgins, sure.
00:49:34I'd like, I'd prefer AJ Pratt or DK Metcalf, but I'll take T Higgins.
00:49:37They could use a veteran corner.
00:49:39I think that's a need.
00:49:40Will Campbell, Jack Sawyer, boom, you shrink the trenches.
00:49:42I assume Trey Henderson is Treyvion Henderson.
00:49:44There's your running back.
00:49:46I can't say I'm familiar with major Taylor.
00:49:49Is that supposed to be Mason Taylor?
00:49:51Maybe it's Trey Henderson.
00:49:53Yeah.
00:49:54It looks up major.
00:49:55Taylor is an American cyclist from the early 1900s is Trey Henderson, the running back
00:50:00or the Bengals pass rusher because it's Trey Hendrickson.
00:50:05Is he a free agent though?
00:50:06Yeah, but he's there.
00:50:07That that's in the draft part.
00:50:08Oh, that's true.
00:50:09Right.
00:50:10Cause I can go free agent, free agent, draft, draft, free agent, bicyclist, like for, I
00:50:15for Johnson's and arms cycle works.
00:50:18Oh, Worcester cycle manufacturing company.
00:50:20He won gold at the 1899 world championships in Montreal.
00:50:25There you go.
00:50:26How about that?
00:50:27Good for me.
00:50:28I'm sure we're going to talk about getting signed.
00:50:30Oh, I know.
00:50:31Vikings practice squad, the legend Koi Kronk.
00:50:34I'm sure this new practice facility though is going to have some bikes or something.
00:50:38Major.
00:50:39Major Taylor could just bike around the practice facility.
00:50:42He is a parent.
00:50:43Like he grew up in Worcester or he is a teenager.
00:50:46He like started biking in Worcester.
00:50:47So about that Worcester legend, Pat's fan, what Pat's fan, maybe probably not.
00:50:57He died 30 years before the Patriots were founded, but okay.
00:51:00Red Sox fan, Red Sox fan.
00:51:02Maybe I guess the Bruins were technically around back then.
00:51:07If it is Mason Taylor, by the way, just to say, I do like Mason Taylor.
00:51:10It'd be an interesting pick for them.
00:51:12Another free agent, DJ Reed.
00:51:15Again, I'm all for maybe paying a second corner, finding that guy in free agency.
00:51:22I like DJ Reed.
00:51:23He is another one of those smaller options though.
00:51:26He does play bigger rough game this week.
00:51:28Yeah, he did against the Dolphins too.
00:51:31So, but I still like your guy, Carlton Davis.
00:51:35I think that would be a good fit opposite Christian Gonzalez and free agency.
00:51:39But definitely, I like the idea, the thought process of paying a corner there this summer
00:51:47or spraying free agency draft opposite of getting offensive tackle at the first pick
00:51:52and trading up for a wide receiver.
00:51:55Any worth trading up for a Mecca Boca, Luther Burden.
00:51:58A Mecca Boca is going to be such a sturdy, solid pro, but Luther Burden probably too.
00:52:05I don't know how many more of these kind of inside receivers the Patriots can afford to
00:52:11draft.
00:52:12They have an abundance of those two guys.
00:52:14Probably none are at the level of a Mecca Boca or Luther Burden, but it just kind of
00:52:19still fits the mold of the players they have on their roster right now.
00:52:24So it's like you're trying to get that apex guy and you're the apex guys are going earlier.
00:52:29You don't necessarily need, it'd be great if they could get a true franchise blue chip
00:52:34left tackle, but they don't even have the, they don't even have the pop Douglas equivalent
00:52:42of a tackle right now.
00:52:44Right.
00:52:44So that's gotta be the position you, if you're going wide receiver, it kind of has to be
00:52:49all or nothing.
00:52:51I was hoping a Boca would come out last year and they could have used that Jalen Polk pick
00:52:56on a Boca.
00:52:56That would have been perfect.
00:52:57That would have been, that was, that, that was my, my dream last year, but you know,
00:53:02he stayed and, you know, obviously now probably can't, probably can't afford that.
00:53:07So I was trying to find a question that I scrolled over.
00:53:12It was about the tight ends.
00:53:14He was talking, Henry's getting old.
00:53:16Hooper's on a one-year deal.
00:53:18Jaheim Bell is kind of this, you know, versatile guy.
00:53:21Do we like any of the tight ends in the draft this year?
00:53:23It's a good class.
00:53:24We've talked about them a few times.
00:53:26Um, any of those guys, you know, Colson Loveland and the, uh, Penn state guy whose name just
00:53:34escaped me, uh, Tyler Warren, probably the top of that class, maybe like Colson Loveland
00:53:42cause the Michigan offense was such a mess.
00:53:44Cause they didn't have a quarterback slips to like the top of the second round and you
00:53:47could get them there.
00:53:47But, uh, any thoughts on those two tight ends or anyone else in that class that, that you're
00:53:52kind of eyeing?
00:53:54Yeah, it's probably a little rich for them.
00:53:55You know, if, if they're sitting there at 34, they've added a receiver, they've added
00:54:01like a T Higgins site.
00:54:02They drafted Will Campbell.
00:54:03Uh, was that found the question, but go for it.
00:54:08Okay.
00:54:08Um, if they're, you know, if they're sitting there at 34, they've added a T Higgins site.
00:54:12They've drafted Will Campbell.
00:54:14Yeah.
00:54:14I, I, I wouldn't hate, you know, Tyler Warren, if he falls that far, I do think getting a
00:54:19contingency plan in place at tight ends important.
00:54:21One thing I think we've very clearly learned about Drake made this year is he likes to
00:54:25run a tight ends.
00:54:26You want to keep talent at that position.
00:54:28And you're kind of in this spot where you let Austin Hooper walk, you draft this guy,
00:54:34he becomes your tight end two for a year or two tight ends generally take longer to develop
00:54:37than other positions.
00:54:39And then when Hunter Henry moves on, okay, now he's ready to step into that main role.
00:54:42Um, but I mean, you look up and down this draft and I think there's guys that, you
00:54:47know, some are more projects than others, but.
00:54:49Playing behind Hunter Henry, you can, there's an allowance for a project player there.
00:54:57You kind of have that flexibility.
00:54:59So, um, you know, I look at Mason Taylor, we already talked about gunner helm.
00:55:03I saw somebody mentioned the chat from Texas, uh, burning stool from, from Clemson is a
00:55:08guy I like her on the Gadsden more receiving tight end, not much of a blocker Mitchell
00:55:12Evans from Notre Dame.
00:55:13That's a tight end college.
00:55:15Uh, John Michael Gillenborg probably is the best name of anybody.
00:55:18Obviously, Bryson Nesbitt, Drake Mays, former college tight end.
00:55:22Ton of options.
00:55:23That's the move.
00:55:24That's the move.
00:55:25Bryson Nesbitt.
00:55:26I think it's, if they nail free agency, then it, it opens the door to maybe that second
00:55:31pick.
00:55:32If a Tyler Warren or Colson Loveland is there.
00:55:35Cause again, if you could add some explosiveness at that spot, we know Drake may, as you said,
00:55:39loves it.
00:55:40Alex van Pelt likes that position.
00:55:42As we saw in Cleveland, you know, with a guy like David Najoku, if you could find the guy
00:55:45like that, that would, that could really help this, this offense out.
00:55:49But that's again, maybe one of these luxury picks where you gotta be confident with everything
00:55:53else in free agency, uh, and then kind of fill it in.
00:55:56But, um, yeah, Warren and Loveland, great players.
00:55:59And as, as you listed through those guys, some good, uh, depth in this class, two more
00:56:04here, uh, any chance they go linebacker for a first round pick, probably not first pick,
00:56:10but maybe you say that second pick they could move up.
00:56:13Like I've, I think they should find a linebacker and free agency or the draft, like their middle
00:56:20of the field without Juwan Bentley has been really bad this year.
00:56:23So when's the last time they put like.
00:56:27Valuable money or draft capital into the linebacker position.
00:56:31It's been like off ball linebacker.
00:56:32It's been a few years, right?
00:56:34Yeah, it's, it's been a while.
00:56:36Um, and it's, it's a good year for it.
00:56:38I Jalen Walker's probably too rich for them, but Gia Campbell, Harold Perkins, Danny
00:56:43Stutzman, Barrett Carter.
00:56:45Um, the, you know, there's a lot of, you know, day two, you're gonna have a chance to add
00:56:49a playmaking linebacker in this draft.
00:56:51I was watching some of a Campbell from Bama.
00:56:54That guy muted Brian.
00:56:55Oh, there you go.
00:56:57You got me now.
00:56:59Uh, I was watching football.
00:57:01Yeah.
00:57:01I was watching some of Campbell, um, from Bama six, three to 45.
00:57:06So he's a big guy and he can move for a big guy.
00:57:10So if he slips into that second, second round, I would absolutely be all in, uh, on Campbell
00:57:16there at the linebacker position.
00:57:17He will be in at least one of our, he'll be in at least one of our mock drafts.
00:57:21I feel confident about that.
00:57:23He, he is a fun player.
00:57:24Like exactly what they, like he played was con like they played Wisconsin Bama.
00:57:29And he had a couple of plays where he was like running the seam and cover to just so
00:57:33like fluent and like, looks like a natural.
00:57:35And you're like, that's the opposite of anything.
00:57:38Patriots linebackers are doing this year.
00:57:40And, and he, like, he's a big guy.
00:57:42Like he's the modern size athlete, kind of what maybe we were hoping Marte Mopu would
00:57:47be when we like wanted him to be a linebacker, you know, that athletic, but he's bigger.
00:57:52He can play the run.
00:57:53So, uh, I'm a big fan of Campbell, but last one I got for you, December 10th.
00:58:00Joff wants to know what is our dream scenario for the draft trade down from three, stay
00:58:05and pick Travis Hunter trade to pick for a player.
00:58:09What is Alex Barth stream draft scenario, December 10th, completely irrelevant before
00:58:14the end of the season and the college football playoff in NFL free agency.
00:58:19But right now what's your dream, dream scenario.
00:58:22I mean, yeah, we got to see what happens with free agency and all that.
00:58:24My dream scenario is Will Campbell is 33 plus inch arms.
00:58:27That's your left tackle.
00:58:29Um, and then you get to work and then you go find a pass rusher and, uh, uh, linebacker
00:58:35on day two.
00:58:37Okay.
00:58:38I think my dream, I'm going to trade down from three.
00:58:42I'm going to stay in the top 10.
00:58:45I'll add Abdul Carter and we're going to use those resources, whatever we get.
00:58:50And we're going to trade for AJ Brown, or we're going to trade for DK Metcalf.
00:58:54And we're going to, we're going to be set.
00:58:56We're going to, we'll figure out offensive tackle in free agency, or maybe one of those
00:59:01round two guys we're talking about.
00:59:03Um, but Abdul Carter, you go get a veteran receiver.
00:59:06I think the veteran receiver is starting to be my path, my favorite path here, you know,
00:59:13with maybe T Hagen's not hitting the market.
00:59:15Uh, and we'll see with like a Tet McMillan or the, you know, the draft isn't, you know,
00:59:20there's no Malik neighbors, there's no Marvin Harrison.
00:59:22So I like the veteran wide receiver path in this one.
00:59:25So if you've got some resources, go get one of those guys and move down and still get
00:59:29a really good defensive player, uh, like Abdul Carter there.
00:59:33So we will wrap it up there.
00:59:36We will be back on Thursday.
00:59:37Most likely, hopefully we both have our voices completely back.
00:59:41Uh, by then we have another game.
