00:00:00Oh
00:00:04We're not playing a little video
00:00:08But alright, I guess we'll just take it from there welcome in everyone to a live brand new Patriots beat podcast here on the
00:00:17CLNS media network presented by our wonderful friends over at prize picks and game time
00:00:22It is Brian Hines back as always with Alex Barth
00:00:25His voice is still going through it a little bit. This is probably like his fifth podcast of the day
00:00:30So we're gonna get what we get from Barth. My voice
00:00:33is a little bit better, but now my
00:00:36Wi-Fi yesterday with the rain and the storm is out. So I'm on a hot spot
00:00:41So it might be a mess and we brought in Taylor to make everything better
00:00:44So Taylor welcome back into our preview or be breaking down the Cardinals game coming up
00:00:50Well, of course, we have to talk about the story of the day and Bill Belichick
00:00:54Officially introduced as the North Carolina head coach. We had a few guys
00:00:59Announced for the draft free agent offensive tackle resign
00:01:03so maybe we'll get into a little bit of that if we're still up and running at the end of this if we have we
00:01:08have some time but
00:01:09Let's start with the Cardinals preview Patriots going on the road back from the by out West Cardinals
00:01:18Playoff hopes are slim. They they've dropped the last few games. So looking, you know outside of the playoff bubble
00:01:25So maybe a winnable game
00:01:27Here for the Patriots and Taylor. I'll start with you
00:01:31We don't need the whole
00:01:33Barth tanking how tanking doesn't exist from the players and the coaches the Patriots are trying to win this game
00:01:39But Taylor with the first of the last four games here for you
00:01:44Are you more worried about the Patriots starting, you know this last month strong building some positive momentum
00:01:50Maybe getting a win in a winnable game in, Arizona
00:01:53Or are you all eyes on the draft right now and say get me the highest draft pick possible
00:02:00No matter how how it's done. Where are you kind of at with this team in these last four games?
00:02:06between those two options
00:02:08Like I'm not gonna lie. I've been flirting with draft stuff like it is what it is
00:02:12We want to know like, all right, who's maybe gonna go where like, what are we dealing with?
00:02:15But at the same time the season ain't over and we you know
00:02:19Gerard Bale has emphasized that there's a lot of young players who still need to prove themselves
00:02:22We've got Cole strange J. Vaughn Baker Jalen Polk, you know a Caden Wallace, you know on the defensive side of the ball
00:02:29It hasn't been mentioned but Marti Mappu a guy who was healthy scratch last week
00:02:32so I think these last few games are really important because
00:02:35Especially if you talk about right tackle if Caden Wallace at some point comes in he plays well for you
00:02:41Maybe you don't feel like you need to get a premium type of right tackle or someone who can really hold it down for potentially
00:02:47an entire season or maybe even have to invest in the right tackle position again if he really does struggle and proves that he's
00:02:52Not really the guy Leighton Robinson that left guard a new position for him. Gerard Mayo said he played better
00:02:58There were definitely some flashes also a little bit lost at times
00:03:01So not only that seeing what these young guys have because that's gonna really affect what your needs are in the offseason
00:03:06But also we talked about you know, Gerard Mayo Greg Bidard reported make could be on the hot seat if he doesn't finish strong
00:03:13Do I think the Patriots are potentially gonna go for it? Oh in this stretch?
00:03:17Absolutely not, but they need to be competitive in every single. I'm not gonna say everyone Buffalo. They could get blown out
00:03:23That's that's very much on the table and I don't want to act like it's not
00:03:27Right, like that's a really tough
00:03:29Who knows what's gonna happen?
00:03:30But the rest of those games need to be competitive
00:03:32Especially the Chargers and Cardinals because it's not the Colts level of win ability
00:03:36But I do think they have a shot in both of those games. So, you know can't can't mentally check out just yet
00:03:42Yeah, and look we talked about this last year. I think you're trying to establish something look towards 2025
00:03:48That's that's first and foremost internal. You want to see growth from the coaching staff?
00:03:52This has been the big question all year the big picture thing all year
00:03:55You better in December in January than you were in September. We talked about this was the last week two weeks ago
00:04:02What's the best game the Patriots have played this season like just on tape the best game they played this season?
00:04:08You could already that was Seattle all the way back in week two
00:04:10You don't want your best game to be two weeks in the air now
00:04:12Maybe the Colts game supersedes that but still you want to build on that. So I
00:04:17Think as you look towards 2025 you want to start to establish something internally and then also
00:04:24externally, right you're not going to become a
00:04:27destination for ring chasers just yet, but if you can
00:04:31Win five one maybe two wins here down the stretch would be great
00:04:35If you can at least be a pain in the ass for some of these teams
00:04:38Look at look at what's going on with Carolina Panthers right now
00:04:40and I know how far we fall in that the Carolina Panthers are now this, you know target for what the Patriots should be doing, but
00:04:48They've been a pain in the ass for the Chiefs. They've been a pain in the ass for the Eagles
00:04:51They've won a couple games in here too against lesser teams
00:04:53And now people are starting to point at the Panthers and be like that team. They're building something
00:04:58They're onto something and you know as you pitch free agents this offseason
00:05:02You look at hey, look we're building towards them
00:05:04Look what we have at the end of the year like we can add to that. So I
00:05:08Think wins are especially when the team's ahead of the Patriots still to play each other
00:05:12I think wins are much more important than draft positioning over these final four games and look they're not gonna win that many of them
00:05:18But even just looking competitive
00:05:20Right if you can be a tough out for the bills the Chargers the Cardinals
00:05:23You play all these all for these teams to what all for these games to one score margins
00:05:28I think that does a ton for the brand going into the offseason
00:05:32Yeah, we've talked a lot about
00:05:35you know, Dan Campbell maybe being
00:05:38The ideal outcome for Gerard Mayo here and you look at his first year as a head coach
00:05:42The Lions were really struggling and then they finished two and two down the stretch
00:05:46I think they ended the year like 313 and one they might have a tie in there
00:05:50So the record's not great, but they end two and two they build some momentum
00:05:54Then they go nine and eight
00:05:55The following year which I think they won like five of their last six games down the stretch and now you see twelve and five
00:06:01Last year and now they're sitting here. What are they twelve and one thirteen one something like they're the best team in football right now
00:06:07So you see that positive momentum going and I know we all want the highest draft pick possible because the higher picks are the better
00:06:15But if you can start to build some of that momentum
00:06:18That would be positive for them Taylor you mentioned, you know
00:06:21Some of those younger players that they want to start to get in here
00:06:25Mayo really pointed out, you know, we'll talk about the receivers
00:06:28But the big ones were Leighton Robinson who we saw get back in the lineup at left guard and now Cole strange
00:06:34Who's back on the active roster Caden Wallace who's back?
00:06:37He's practicing. He's still on IR
00:06:39They have you know, three weeks to activate him, but he Mayo made it sound like he could factor in here sooner
00:06:45Rather than later later strange is the interesting one to me because of how well
00:06:50Ben Brown has been, you know playing these last few weeks and just throwing Cole strange in a position
00:06:56He's never played in live action before so Taylor we get we can start with you
00:07:01Like do you see a path for them getting Cole strange?
00:07:05Into the lineup as soon as this weekend in Arizona here
00:07:09It's tough man, cuz Ben Brown's been playing well
00:07:12He's like the third best pass blocking center over the past like four games that they played as a run blocker a little bit inconsistent
00:07:19Inconsistent overall, but that was to be expected when he hasn't played so poorly that you're saying
00:07:23All right, you gotta yank him and this week especially against the Cardinals
00:07:27This is gonna be one of the most exotic pressure schemes the Patriots have or will see for the entire season
00:07:32And it really scares me. I know Cole strange been working with David Andrews. He's a smart guy
00:07:36He's been take tackling meetings with the perspective of I'm probably gonna be after making adjustments and calling out protections and whatnot
00:07:43I need to see it through a different lens. So I'm ready, but still he hasn't really played center full-time
00:07:49I don't think I'm not sure if he did in college, but he did it wasn't very often and it was a while ago
00:07:54So you're asking a lot for him to be able to see this Cardinals defense and maybe get the offense in the best position possible
00:08:00on a down-to-down basis
00:08:02Down the road
00:08:02especially as we're approaching like the last two three games and you know
00:08:06You kind of have to do what you have to do because Ben Brown's probably gonna be back
00:08:09Anyway, Alex you pointed out that I'm not sure is he a restricted for agent or see an exclusive rights for you
00:08:13Uh, yeah, exclusive rights. So he's if they want him back. He's back for very little money, right?
00:08:20You know what? You haven't been Brown
00:08:21You can say hey, we're happy to have you back create more competition in the middle, but you got to see strange
00:08:26So I don't love the idea of cool strange being the center this week necessarily and then Leighton Robinson
00:08:31Unless he plays really badly in one of these games
00:08:33You're probably not gonna see Cole with that spot because you need to see what you have in Leighton
00:08:36So it's gonna happen
00:08:38But I will be very curious to see how because it didn't even sound like Gerard had it completely nailed down
00:08:43Although he did kind of move away from the idea of them potentially having a rotation. It sounded like that wasn't really on
00:08:48Yeah. Yeah, he pointed more like towards the continuity the the rotation seemed to be not a huge fan of that
00:08:55So Barth, I'll ask you that same thing was strange at center or maybe even back at his natural position
00:09:01Left guard, even though they seem to really want to get Leighton Robinson in there
00:09:04How do you see this whole Cole strange situation kind of go in this last month?
00:09:09Yeah, let's let's not lose sight of what the most important thing is for this season Drake May his development
00:09:15He has a relationship with Ben Brown. He has chemistry with Ben Brown. The line has chemistry with Ben Brown in there
00:09:21there's this whole like I
00:09:23Get wanting to see what you have with Cole strange at center and I how many times I've done this rant this year
00:09:29What's best for Drake May and what's best for Cole strange would be great if they were the same thing they're not and
00:09:34Drake make needs to get preference. If you really want to get Cole strange on the field to see what you have in them
00:09:40Don't play Leighton Robinson
00:09:42He hasn't been good
00:09:44But they for whatever reason have to like he's the one getting the treatment that Drake may should get
00:09:49It's whatever is best for Leighton Robinson seems to be taking precedent
00:09:52so I I shouldn't say that because they didn't move Michael and went about to right tackle, but they're still kind of
00:09:58Wedging him into the lineup there. I
00:10:01Wouldn't something that has to do that much of Drake May the center
00:10:04I wouldn't touch that if you want to put
00:10:07Cole strange at left guard like to me that makes sense
00:10:10if you see if you think Cole strange is your center of the future let him work there and practice for these final three weeks and
00:10:17Then make that change in the spring
00:10:18Because you're gonna have a whole new offensive line probably or at least like three or four new starters on the offensive line next year
00:10:24anyway
00:10:25and
00:10:27Which you need to do and then you have the whole spring and summer for Drake man Cole strange
00:10:30He used to working with each other
00:10:31They don't need to do it right now. And if if it ends up hurting Drake may it's gonna be a massive unforced error
00:10:38Yeah
00:10:40As what's been Brown had like one bad snap since taking over. It's been pretty clean
00:10:45Yeah, I think was in his first game
00:10:47So there was there was one that kind of went back and just hit his butt. It was a little too low or something, right?
00:10:52Yeah, he's also had like some high ones some low ones like Drake's done a great job corralling them
00:10:57But sometimes when I look at the end zone angle, I'm just like ooh like great job Drake, but it wasn't exactly perfect
00:11:02But it has also like on top of that. It's the communication stuff, too
00:11:06That's the center place such a big communication role and you know, that's putting more on Drake's plate. That's what they can't do the rotation
00:11:11I would rather than just go with Cole strange to do the rotation rotation things nightmare. But yeah
00:11:16Yeah, yeah that cuz that's you know in the system again
00:11:20Like the center is doing all the checks and everything at the lines
00:11:23So to just throw Cole strange in there who's never done that that seems to be, you know a big leap
00:11:29For him and you know Brown like it's been mostly good with him and may you mentioned a few maybe close ones
00:11:35But remember in the training camp like we had to talk about the backup center because there were balls on the ground
00:11:40All the time like that that was a mess. So it hasn't been that bad
00:11:43We also did point out that I was gonna be Drake mace preference for who the center would be and he was gonna have some
00:11:49Say so that there's that factors as well. Definitely. He made that that a point. So
00:11:54That's an interesting one how they get Cole strange in the lineup Caden Wallace though could be a little bit easier
00:12:00You just make a switch at right tackle. All right, Trey Jacobs got benched two weeks ago in that game in Miami
00:12:06He did start the Colts game before the by so
00:12:10Is that Barth a switch that you expect to see with Caden Wallace at right tackle or
00:12:15Maybe one more or two more weeks here for him to work back a little bit more
00:12:19I mean if he's if he's physically ready I do it Jacobs hasn't playing well and that that's a guy that I think even more
00:12:25So than Cole strange you still David Andrews coming back next year and centers are just
00:12:29easier to find than tackles
00:12:32Caden Wallace to me more
00:12:33So is a guy that you want to see what you have going into the offseason and four games isn't enough to make a definitive
00:12:38evaluation so you're gonna want a good plan B either way, but
00:12:42Yeah, if you can get Cole strain if you can get get Caden Wallace out there and like he shows you something it clears
00:12:48The picture up a lot. It's like, all right, we feel good. You know, maybe you bring in
00:12:51The Vidarian low equivalent at right tackle and it's like we have this guy if we need him, but all right, we feel good
00:12:56You know Caden Wallace. That's our right tackle to start the season. That would be no
00:13:00You don't need two true starting caliber right tackles this offseas or two true starting caliber tackles one on each side this offseason
00:13:08It makes the picture a little bit clear
00:13:11Yeah, 100% I think that Trey obviously like chop Robinson was a huge huge challenge and one that he couldn't reasonably be
00:13:19Expected to really take on he did play better last week
00:13:21I want to give him credit like he especially and then one who have really shown more chemistry on the outside zone stuff
00:13:27they were moving people in the gap scheme, but
00:13:30Caden Wallace is the future most likely at that position. We know he came in to play left tackle
00:13:35It seems like that dreams probably did especially considering Vidarian low is proven. He can be like an average to you know
00:13:41bottom tier level starter kind of guys, so
00:13:44Caden Wallace has to go in there. I asked him today what it was gonna be like for him getting back into football shape
00:13:50Because obviously that's the biggest concern. He's missed so much time, but he mentioned like he's been running. He's been swimming
00:13:55He's doing a lot of things. It's not football shape
00:13:58That's why we call it football shape
00:13:59But hopefully he has enough of his legs under him that he can go in there might be a little rocky
00:14:04You know, it's probably not gonna be perfect. He's gonna have his lapses
00:14:10Basically what I said was a Caden Wallace like Trey played better last week, but Wallace has to get in the lineup
00:14:15Mayo said it could be this weekend. They had their padded practice. So, you know, we'll see
00:14:20If it really translated if he did enough, but I'm sure he's gonna be in the lineup at least within the next couple weeks
00:14:26Great takes I completely agree with you guys
00:14:29We told you this one would be a wild card there, so hopefully that's enough of me jumping in and out but
00:14:36Did you just touch on Caden Wallace? Was that it? Yeah
00:14:40Okay
00:14:41So, how about the other guys Mayo kind of lumped in that group of young guys?
00:14:46I need to see the wide receivers probably specifically talking about J Vaughn Baker and Jalen Polk
00:14:52Looks like J Vaughn Baker is gonna miss this one with a concussion. He got put in concussion protocol
00:14:56Wednesday and Thursday's practice
00:14:59Assuming it happened in Monday's practice, you know, they practiced Monday
00:15:02They were off Tuesday and then he landed in concussion protocol Wednesday
00:15:06So probably not seeing J Vaughn Baker, which is disappointing if his role was about to expand over this last month
00:15:12you know, especially after KJ Osborne's release, but
00:15:16Taylor are you expecting more of the same of that just kind of wide receiver?
00:15:21Hierarchy we were kind of seen, you know before the by or do you think maybe we get a little bit more
00:15:27Jalen Polk in the mix or what? Are you looking at from that group to kind of kickstart this last month here?
00:15:33It sounds like we're gonna see some kind of uptick
00:15:36I just wonder what it's gonna look like in exactly how much because like Kendrick Bourne and Drake may
00:15:41Are still building their own chemistry and I think Kendrick is starting to build some momentum
00:15:45I don't know how much you really want to take him off the field because you still want to have a productive offense like
00:15:50Maybe Keishon booty at times just because he's really had most of his success against man coverage
00:15:55Patriots haven't faced a lot of man coverage
00:15:57She's not gonna see a lot of man coverage this weekend against the Cardinals
00:16:00They play a lot of split safety zone, but really a lot of zone in general
00:16:04But I reason I asked today Alex van Pelt about you know, how do you balance having them prove it in practice?
00:16:11Versus wanting to put them in the game, you know when they haven't necessarily done that J Vaughn Baker
00:16:15Obviously, he's gone through concussion protocol that could put a dent and how much he can do
00:16:19But I mean one I think they just need to put on the practice field
00:16:23Which it sounds like they have been doing
00:16:24Drake may hinted at it Alex van Pelt mentioned it that the what they've been doing in practice needs to translate in the game
00:16:30So it sounds like the rest they've been getting they truly have been earning
00:16:33They're not just getting shoehorned in but then you got to actually see it translate van Pelt acknowledged poke
00:16:39You know Pat kind of having some mental hurdles because of the drops and everything which was some nice transparency from him
00:16:45We did hear from Gerard Mayo, but also to hear from the coordinator, especially weeks later after all that like mental issue stuff came up
00:16:52But yeah, you know, he got into a bit of a funk, but it's still gonna be a good player
00:16:56Hopefully he proves it because I think you're out with the receiver looks a whole lot different still need that true number one
00:17:01But I think the Z spot the slot look a lot
00:17:04Different and a lot deeper if Jalen poke starts looking like a guy you can rely on in the future. It'd be great
00:17:09But again, it goes back to what's best for Drake may if he's out there running the wrong routes and dropping passes
00:17:13You can't have him on the field. It's tough. I
00:17:17Would like to see more Baker, too
00:17:19I don't know if that was gonna happen even without the concussion
00:17:22They just the way they've talked about him. It sounds like he's too far away
00:17:26which obviously you don't want to see but I
00:17:30It's you know Polk's gonna be here. He was a second round pick. He's gonna get the benefit of the doubt
00:17:35he'll still be on the team next year, but I
00:17:38I in terms of jobs, you know depth chart kind of thing. I think both of those guys are
00:17:45It's probably too little too late at this point. They're on the outside looking in next year, especially when you look at
00:17:50Who's gonna be available in the draft who's gonna be available in free agency?
00:17:53What that the tendencies have been for this team in terms of going after players under Elliot Wolfe. I
00:18:00Think it is what it is there
00:18:02Yeah, I don't know if it's a mental thing
00:18:04Do you think a week off with the by could could help Polk there?
00:18:08Just maybe you could maybe you reset a little bit and find your footing just for these last four games
00:18:13Just to go out a little a little more encouraged and have a little more confidence
00:18:17And I'm not saying he's gonna light the world on fire and you're you know, check the zeroes receiver next year
00:18:23But maybe just a week off helped a little bit there that that would be it could help you hope it helps
00:18:29I mean I again I I wouldn't bench him
00:18:31I'd still put him out there and see what he can do. But at this point, it's you know
00:18:35He's he's gotta have a breakthrough and it's with the mental things
00:18:39You never know what that's gonna take and like the benching didn't exactly help either
00:18:42So right not the exact same thing as a pie
00:18:44but it's like we were hoping that would help him reset like it did KB eventually and
00:18:50All right, well wrap up the offense we obviously have to talk about
00:18:54Drake may coop in the chat says Drake may is going to torch the Cardinals defense
00:18:58It's gonna be a shootout in the desert Taylor. Do you think Drake may?
00:19:03Alex van Pelt said the Colts was his best game of the season. So he's coming off the best game of the season
00:19:08Can he build on that and can Drake may find some success against Arizona and anything?
00:19:13Specifically you would like to see Drake may do in this one against the Cardinals
00:19:18Yeah, when you look at EPA since like week 12 the Cardinals had their buy-in week 11
00:19:22they've been one of the league's worst past defenses and they're very very boomer bust you in it and pretty much every phase like
00:19:29Buda Baker's a shiny example where he makes a lot of plays behind the line of scrimmage
00:19:33He also misses a ton of tackles and that's pretty much a theme for the entire defense
00:19:37And then when you look at passing, I know they've been really vulnerable against outbreaking routes
00:19:41Which Drake may had a lot of success with last week
00:19:43Maybe we see more of those
00:19:44Also the concepts that we know he loves over the middle like the bow kind of high low sort of concept the dagger self the backside
00:19:51Bigs Gino Smith and Sam Darnold were torching the Cardinals
00:19:55They have like a couple big plays on those in each game that they played
00:19:59You know Smith played them twice in a three-game span
00:20:01I think that's where you're gonna see Drake may have a lot of his success the run game
00:20:05Cardinals run events have been like middle of the pack kind of average the Patriots are building more momentum there
00:20:10Obviously if you're gonna shake up the lineup that could change because that's totally different chemistry
00:20:15You got to see how things work
00:20:16But I do think even if the run game does struggle the Drake may will be pretty okay
00:20:20The biggest thing is gonna be making sure you can counter those blitzes though because they sent
00:20:25Simulated pressures where it's just four guys, but they're from spots that you're not expecting. They send all-out blitzes
00:20:30I think Drake's gonna see cover zero for just the second time the last time he did was fun
00:20:35Like one rep against the Rams, so it's not gonna be easy solving this pressure scheme again
00:20:39It pulls trains to the middle very scary proposition
00:20:42But for the most part other than the Miami game Drake's eyes have consistently been in the right place
00:20:46He's done a great job beating the blitz
00:20:48So if he's on point and if the offensive line doesn't let up unblocked rushers
00:20:53Cardinals like second and unblocked pressures over the past three weeks
00:20:56Then I do think it's gonna be maybe you know last week was his best game according to Alex van Pelt
00:21:00Maybe he can keep adding to that hot streak and have his best game on Sunday
00:21:04Yeah, it's it's aggressive on aggressive
00:21:06It's a very aggressive defense and in Drake Mays obviously obviously plays an aggressive style of quarterback
00:21:11And I generally favor the quarterback in those situations
00:21:14So I think like Taylor said as long as the offensive line gives him a chance, which is an if but as long as the offense
00:21:20Line gives him a chance. I think he's gonna have a chance to make plays
00:21:23The one thing he didn't do in that Colts game and I agree. I think was his best game of the year
00:21:26I came on here and raved about it
00:21:28But the one thing he didn't do like I he didn't throw the ball past like I think his deepest target was 13 yards
00:21:35And you know that credit to him. He was taking what was given to him
00:21:39I didn't fault him for that, but he didn't there were no explosive plays
00:21:43We made outside of the one scramble and he didn't make him
00:21:45He's gonna have a chance to stretch the field and be a little more electric this week
00:21:49I think against the Cardinals again if the offensive line gives him that opportunity and I think he takes advantage of it
00:21:55Yep, and of course the big thing we say every week no turnovers, right?
00:21:59We have what are we at eight interceptions and that number AVP gave us a few weeks ago was ten
00:22:05So yeah, he's got two interceptions to play with over these last four games
00:22:08So no interceptions, no fumbles. That was the one he kind of pointed to I think he was on the radio before the buy
00:22:15He said he was more concerned with the fumbles and the strip sacks holding on the protecting the football in the pocket
00:22:21So no turnovers obviously has to be said but that that's a big one when we're talking about Drake here
00:22:27So before we move on to the defense very quickly. I want to tell you guys about price picks
00:22:32You just pick more or less on at least two players for a shot to win up to 200 times
00:22:35Your cash and you can run your game all season long on price picks

00:22:53Prize picks as you can win up to 200 times your money join now because this holiday season on price picks

00:23:14$5 lineup that's code CL and s to get $50 instantly after you play your first
00:23:20$5 lineup on price picks run your game
00:23:24All right going to the Patriots defense since this Cardinals offense
00:23:30Another mobile quarterback a little different style compared to you know, Anthony Richardson more of that bigger power runner Kyler
00:23:36Obviously shorter shift you're more elusive
00:23:39Taylor is there anything you want to see?
00:23:41The Patriots defense do differently in this matchup that they did against the Colts to kind of try and counter Kyler Murray
00:23:49And make him a non factor if that's possible. I mean, yeah
00:23:54I know
00:23:56But we're talking about, you know keeping guys in the pocket and being sound in your rush lanes they didn't do
00:24:04The past the past rush in terms of keeping in the pocket was mostly pretty good
00:24:08I know there was one play where he got outside the pocket
00:24:12Because there was a big lane in the middle and then there was another one where Jabril peppers blitzed
00:24:16Took a bad angle Richardson got outside him and then he converted on fourth down on the final drive
00:24:21Can't have those against Kyler. I know that most are like third
00:24:25I think of the Cardinals explosive runs have been him scrambling
00:24:28He's also I know DeMarcus coming to mention that he and Marvin Harrison jr. Have really good chemistry on those scam scrambles
00:24:34I'd say the same with Michael Wilson. They both had some big catches when Murray got outside the pocket
00:24:39We're not gonna see as many designed runs as we did with Richardson
00:24:42I don't think unless the Cardinals really try to tap into that with you know, especially the perimeter runs
00:24:46But one it's the awareness like recognizing Christian Ellis mentioned that like his eye discipline wasn't great
00:24:52He blew out of the box on Anthony Richardson's two-point conversion really put the defense in a tough spot
00:24:57Christian Gonzalez was unblocked on Richardson's rushing touchdown and didn't recognize it until it was way too late
00:25:03Like those kinds of things just aren't acceptable, especially in the critical situations
00:25:07That's where they've really been at their worst on defense outside third down the maximum really good
00:25:11So get back to fundamentals better. I discipline better communication
00:25:15Especially if the Cardinals want to go with tempo and just execute at the end of the day
00:25:19It's not really a scheme thing for me. Like it wasn't with the Rams. There were a few times
00:25:23I'm like, yeah, I think Covington maybe put them into bad spots a few times this game
00:25:27I was just like you the play was fine. You just have to do your job
00:25:32Yeah, I just on the defensive front as a whole when it comes to containing Kyler getting after him even the run game like I
00:25:39Talked about before I think these final four games are about showing some sort of progress and
00:25:44growth late in the season to build on I
00:25:46Don't know that there's a position group better set up for that on this roster than the defensive front
00:25:51Christian bar more has been back for a few weeks
00:25:53It seems like he's doing like much closer to getting back in a football shape
00:25:57He's practicing back-to-back days, which he wasn't doing before you add Yannick and Gawke you start getting him involved
00:26:03You know, it seems like they've started to figure things out at the linebacker position
00:26:07I
00:26:08Did and this is a good test for him
00:26:10This is a good test and they can if they're gonna kind of make a little push late
00:26:14This would be a great way to start it. Yeah, James
00:26:17Connor is still doing it great in Arizona like stopping the Cardinals run game
00:26:21It's kind of where it starts, but then if you want to transition to the secondary, you know, Marvin Harrison jr
00:26:27Obviously leads that wide receiver group so far for you
00:26:31Gonzo on Marvin Harrison and then I thought I was muted there
00:26:35Gonzo so Gonzo on Marvin Harrison and then are we still seeing some more of you know, Alex Austin's a Bolden
00:26:43Do you do you like that rotation that they did before the by how you?
00:26:47What do you kind of want to see out of that that cornerback room against these Cardinals receivers? Yeah
00:26:52I think you go guns on Harrison. He's clearly the number one. I
00:26:57You're probably going
00:26:59more speed
00:27:01With those secondary matchups, I'd like to see Alex Austin on the field
00:27:04But to me he's on more like Zach Pascal
00:27:08Zay Jones if he's out there
00:27:11But I I would like to see more more from Alex Austin in this game. I thought he played well last week
00:27:16and I
00:27:17They need that size. They need that physicality corner
00:27:21Taylor I disagree. I think this is gonna be more of a size matchup because Rod Mayo
00:27:25He mentioned size and speed but every one of the Cardinals receivers outside like one guy is 6 1 or taller
00:27:32And I don't really think you want Marcus Jones and Jonathan Jones having to deal with that all week, especially last week
00:27:37We did see more of Alice Austin
00:27:38we did see more of Isaiah Bolden and I think that's also gonna continue the trend of them wanting to see what the young guys
00:27:43Have because Jonathan Jones, could he be resigned in the offseason? Sure. I think if he wants to keep playing football
00:27:48It's almost definitely gonna be in New England, but he could also retire and we already know he's lost a step
00:27:53So I think it is important whether it's kind of like what we saw earlier this season and last season where it's more of a
00:27:59Rotation and he doesn't have to play a full slate and you can kind of use him more in passing situations or whatever
00:28:04I think he got to see more of Alex Austin. He was competitive last week made some plays also had some plays
00:28:09I'm sure you'd like back Isaiah Bolden not super active in terms of like getting thrown at or anything
00:28:13But he was in good position as well
00:28:15He also remember he was in the slot when Marcus Jones wasn't active in the spring and summer
00:28:19So I think those guys will mix in hopefully especially with Marcus Jones, you know
00:28:23He was back at practice, but he was limited and he's sick
00:28:26Maybe you don't want him to play a hundred percent of the snaps, especially if he's a punt returner as well
00:28:30So maybe we see Isaiah Bolden in the slot once again
00:28:33Yeah, so I think this is gonna be a lot about size and both of those guys are fast as well
00:28:37I don't think that's an issue
00:28:39But I think also like you said Alex, it's got to be gonzo and Marvin Harrison jr
00:28:43If not, I don't really know what you're doing
00:28:44Mike Wilson I will say has more explosive catches over the past few weeks than Marvin Harrison jr
00:28:50Some really impressive grabs downfield like you can't sleep on either one of these guys
00:28:54But like MHJ was a top five pick for reason like yeah
00:28:58Yeah. Yeah, I like the I like the gonzo matchup and I was gonna say, you know with Marcus Jones
00:29:03He missed Monday Wednesday limit today, you know, he's wearing a mask in the locker room
00:29:07So he's definitely dealing with something like what's his stamina level gonna be?
00:29:11Yeah, like is he gonna be able to go out there and play 80 90 percent of the defensive snaps?
00:29:15You might have to go elsewhere because of that but then you know going back to that
00:29:19You know play these young guys see what you have
00:29:21I know
00:29:22They weren't really talking about the defensive players when they were doing that but Alex Austin's a bold and should definitely fall in that bucket
00:29:28And it's a good matchup with some of those size guys. So
00:29:32See what you have there. We also someone, you know mentioned Trey McBride big part of the Cardinals passing attack
00:29:40No one runs a better corner route than Trey McBride Scott John Gruden feeling nicey
00:29:45Are you worried about worried about him who John Gruden who are you worried about a Trey McBride, you know
00:29:52Jalen Hawkins missed practice today. He's got the illness Kyle Duggar. We've talked about him a lot. So that safety room
00:29:59Is kind of beating are you worried Taylor about Trey McBride and the impact he could kind of make on this game?
00:30:05Again, so in coverage hell
00:30:07Yes
00:30:07Like he scares me a lot in that regard because we know this defense has really struggled
00:30:11When there are no zone coverages and Trey McBride does a good job finding those soft spots Murray does a great job hitting them
00:30:17But against man, I think they'll be fine. I think Kyle Duggar for the most part is good in man
00:30:22If Jalen Hawkins is sick
00:30:23It's almost a guarantee that Marte Mapu is probably gonna play
00:30:26He and Del Pettis have both been good against tight ends and Del Pettis was on
00:30:30George Kittle's hip in the limited snaps that they had, you know a while ago and he still looks very good in that role
00:30:35So I think they can hang with a man-to-man McBride's a great player
00:30:39He's probably gonna make some catches if Kyle and Murray tries to give him a shot
00:30:42But he doesn't really scare me too much and the less they're forced to play a ton of zone and you can just pick them
00:30:47apart by finding the soft spots
00:30:50Yeah, great. All right anything else on the defense side of the ball or are we good there?
00:30:59Oh Trey Benson can't sleep on Trey Benson. He's been really good too in the backfield the rookie running back
00:31:04He was one of the best guys in the class and he's performed and then an offensive line
00:31:08I will say they're pretty good at y'all. They throw hold the former Patriots one of the better centers
00:31:13Yeah, Paris Johnson has been outstanding and left tackle Jonah Williams at right tackle has been really good since he got back as well
00:31:21one of my three two darlings RIP
00:31:23And then the only real weak spot for them is I think right guard their starter got hurt and the backups
00:31:29Haven't been playing very well. I think it was a couple guys. So in my preview I had Keon white
00:31:34He's been the most efficient interior pass rusher in football. It's like 17% pressure rate
00:31:39The next closest player is Cam Hayward at like 14% much higher snap count, but still like that's what Keon white gives you
00:31:45so I think we're gonna see a lot of those guys facing off and
00:31:47Keon white just teeing off on Kyler Murray trying to disrupt him and force some turnover worthy plays. Yeah
00:31:54All right
00:31:55Wrap up with special teams farth anything you want to see in that department
00:32:00We have Chad Ryland revenge game the Pats signed the kicker to the practice squad
00:32:04So is Joey sly on on warning is his job up for grabs? Maybe what do you want to see?
00:32:11Special teams department on Sunday. Yeah, it's it's Joey sly, you know, I don't with four games left. I don't know that
00:32:18He I mean, he's a free agent, right? So it's
00:32:21He's competing for a spot here next year. I think I said this when when we run on Tuesday Brian that
00:32:27John Parker Ramos kind of guy you have in camp for kicking competition and I wouldn't be surprised they signed him to get him
00:32:32on a futures deal and
00:32:33You know, the question is is he competing with sly's another veteran? Is it a draft pick? Is it somebody else?
00:32:37So sly's now competing for his role in 2025 and this is a relatively easier building to kick
00:32:45No excuses
00:32:46Let's see if he can can fend it off with somebody looking right over his shoulder
00:32:51Yeah, I would totally agree with that. I'm not gonna beat it that horse
00:32:54I'll say I'm curious to see what happens a part returner if it's Marcus Jones, or if maybe they give it to pop
00:32:59Did pop get a chance and make a mistake this year or am I conflating?
00:33:04Javon Baker because I know pop got like at least one returner. No, I think that was last year
00:33:08He returned one this year Marcus Jones was hurt, but it was right like an eventful
00:33:12No pop had one last year where he fielded it like inside the five. Okay last year
00:33:18Yeah
00:33:19With the
00:33:21Cardinals punter has been a DNP both days this week with a foot injury
00:33:26I know he got hurt mid game last week and Ryland had to come in and punt and they were like
00:33:33They were these shorter punt so it gives you a chance to return
00:33:36So, I don't know. I don't know if they have a punter on their practice squad
00:33:40I should have looked that up or if they're preparing for Gilligan
00:33:44To be able to punt big implications probably in our punter league whoever has him
00:33:49But you know if something happens there if he goes on their practice squad, it's Patriots legend Michael Polardi
00:33:56Do they really okay. So the punts are gonna be short
00:34:01It could also be forget the
00:34:04Chad Raven revenge game we could get the Michael Polardi revenge game. We could just get the full special teams revenge game over here
00:34:11It's Tucker Addington, can he's shoot over there to
00:34:14Nick Leverett long snapping. There you go. Nick Tucker Addington is on a team right now. I think yeah, he's on the
00:34:21Yeah, he got cut again he was on the Jaguars too
00:34:31Nick Leverett's on the Cardinals too. I wonder if they try to elevate him
00:34:37Put key on white over him to
00:34:41I know he was I
00:34:45Mean it was rough when he punted here, but wasn't he on the older side to like end of his career
00:34:53Yeah
00:34:5722 cuz that was when Jake Bailey got hurt and they
00:35:04He might have yeah, because that was
00:35:10One of its worst games too. I feel like he botched a couple of kicks that day
00:35:14probably that was not a good operation, but
00:35:17Yeah, there's a new kicker in here
00:35:19So Joey saw all eyes on him
00:35:21But I mean, let's be real this game is gonna end with the Chatter Island walked off field goal, right?
00:35:25Like we all are prepared for it to end that way probably a bomb to
00:35:31repeated Denver last year, but
00:35:34Wouldn't would not surprise me so that will do it for our wrap-up, but we will end of course
00:35:42We will try to do our prize picks line up here. Let me get the
00:35:47Graphic up there. Let me pull up prize picks on my phone
00:35:51Hopefully I don't freeze again and get bumped out of here
00:35:54But Taylor you're in so, you know how it goes six player lineup any particular player
00:36:00You like off the bat to have a big game this weekend that that you're I in
00:36:07I'm gonna go with Hunter Henry and Austin Hooper
00:36:11They're already riding the Dutch streaks a lot of zone from the Cardinals
00:36:14I feel like they'll find those soft spots and record Austin
00:36:18Hooper is 20 and a half receiving yards in Hunter Henry is 46 and a half
00:36:25So do you like more laughing?
00:36:27more
00:36:28Going boat. We're going tight end party. All right, we can go tight end party
00:36:37Elsewhere we got pop Douglas 38 and a half receiving yards Drake May
00:36:45223 and a half pass yards 29 and a half rush yards that gives you a total of 257 and a half total yards
00:36:54More than one and a half touchdowns more than one and a half interceptions
00:36:59Speaking of Joey slide more than one and a half field goals made
00:37:04Kendrick Bourne case on booty yards remandre 49 and a half rush yards anything standing out there
00:37:13What do you think
00:37:21Booty so 32 and a half that downfield threat. Like I said, I think Drake may you know
00:37:26Against the blitz so you could do 32 and a half receiving yards or longest reception 17 and a half
00:37:32Oh, see, I like that's not air yards, right? It's just longest reception. Yeah, so you could catch a five-yard slant
00:37:39yeah, I like more on that that that one feels like a like a
00:37:43That could be a move. All right, we'll do that. And then let's throw one Drake May
00:37:48in there, do you like the
00:37:51Pass yards rush yards total yards 22 pass completions more or less than 33 pass attempts
00:37:57Do you think he's gonna be throwing the ball that much?
00:38:00I'm probably gonna throw a lot. They've been doing it all the starts
00:38:03More than more than 33 pass attempts. Yeah
00:38:08We'll throw that in there
00:38:11We will go over to the Cardinals
00:38:13And
00:38:15First one is Chatter Island more or less than one and a half field goals made if you want to put I think we have
00:38:20To take that right more. Yeah. Yeah, okay
00:38:24And then should we do our random game or should we do one more Cardinal player? I think we got to do Jets Jaguars
00:38:31Jets Jaguars, okay. Is that a one-on-one game?
00:38:37Yes, okay what no it's Monday Night Football what do we got for Mac Jones against the Jaguars
00:38:44Against
00:38:46Mac Jones
00:38:49201 and a half pass yards
00:38:54One and a half pass touchdowns one and a half or more than one and a half interceptions
00:39:00Interceptions cheese six and a half rush yards
00:39:03Oh
00:39:07Thirty and a half pass attempts or nineteen and a half pass completions. When's the last time Mac through for over 200 yards?
00:39:14Maybe last weekend. Oh
00:39:16He might have done it garbage time lesson, but there's not gonna be garbage time. That's that's the thing
00:39:21It's all garbage time, but there's not gonna be this is gonna be a close game. Yeah. Well, he thought throw it 31 times
00:39:28Yeah
00:39:29Yeah, cuz they can't listen
00:39:31Yeah
00:39:33So you want to go?
00:39:34More than thirty and a half pass. What do they have for Brian Thomas because he hits like one deep ball to Brian Thomas every
00:39:40game
00:39:42They wait like till the third quarter and they have like 12 yards of offense and then they're like
00:39:46Maybe we should throw the ball to Brian Thomas. Then they just
00:39:51Brian Thomas is
00:39:5461 and a half receiving yards 24 and a half
00:39:57Longest reception 12 and a half fantasy score, which we realize fantasy score is PPR
00:40:02So that would be like six catches for 65 yards. I could see that
00:40:07I would you say that or just the total yards because the total yards and what was it?
00:40:11It was 30 something 61 and a half. You can get half of that one catch
00:40:16Yeah, I want to Brian Thomas yards. Yeah. All right, so that'll start us in the one o'clock window, which by the way, I
00:40:23Love the 430 starts for the Patriots, but of course the week they get it
00:40:28It's like all the best games in football are in the 430 slate. So just just naturally fun stuff
00:40:34But here's our lineup. We got a
00:40:37Excuse me. We got the tight ends
00:40:39Hunter Henry more than 46 and a half receiving yards Austin Hooper more than 20 and a half receiving yards
00:40:45Keishon booty more than 17 and a half
00:40:48Yards longest reception Drake may more than 33 pass attempts and we got some Patriots legends down here
00:40:55Chad Ryland more one and a half field goals made. Oh, no, we didn't do Matt
00:40:59We did Brian Thomas more 61 and a half receiving yards on prize picks. We have a
00:41:0622 time multiplier this week, so
00:41:09if you do the
00:41:11$5 use code CL NS and you play $5 you win
00:41:16110 and then if you want to you know, you win you get $50 instantly whether you win or lose
00:41:23So if you want to put that 50 on it
00:41:26$1,100 get yourself some cash for the holiday spending if you get five of six picks, correct
00:41:31We have our lineup promotion
00:41:33So you get your money back there as well going five for six code CL and s on prize picks yet again
00:41:40We'll tweet that lineup out on
00:41:42Sunday morning before the games if you want to play along with us, we got four left
00:41:47We're gonna hit one of these and win all of our money back and be good to go there
00:41:51So go to prize picks
00:41:53and play that lineup with us yet again, so
00:41:57We'll wrap it up here with a little Bill Belichick talk officially introduced as the UNC head coach
00:42:05Today Barth, we'll start with you
00:42:08I know you're you're probably excited that the New England region is dialed in on college football and talking all college football
00:42:14Just what are your thoughts?
00:42:17And anything else about the bill Belichick officially the UNC head coach there
00:42:25You're muted you did it was great
00:42:27we were talking like recruiting and transfer portal and an ACC strength of schedule in the chat or in the locker room earlier, um,
00:42:36So I I guess what I think is interesting is is there's two
00:42:41Lenses is viewed from
00:42:44There there are coaches that bounce back and forth between college and pro it happens, but
00:42:48There are some guys that are lifers and when one of those guys late in his career goes to the other side
00:42:55You get this unique thing where there's definitely a community of fans that just follow the NFL and that's what they do
00:43:00Or just follow college and that's what they do
00:43:03And the most recent was urban Meyer where you had all these diehard college football fans who don't follow the NFL as closely
00:43:10kind of gravitate over to follow him, so
00:43:13With this you have this is an extreme example where you have the college football world
00:43:18That has always viewed bill Belichick from a distance
00:43:21now and because it's two different cultures embrace him into that culture and
00:43:26you
00:43:27You have the NFL world, which I I don't mean this to be mean to anybody
00:43:33This is just the vibe I get from having been on both sides
00:43:37NFL specific fans
00:43:40Look down on college football in a way college football fans. I
00:43:45I'm not they don't look down on the NFL. They just kind of ignore it
00:43:50Where's this? There's a superiority complex from NFL fans
00:43:53So you have the the NFL fans is like I see going to college man that sucks and you know
00:43:58They're acting like he's going into obscurity
00:44:00Whereas I think for the college fans and this is the side I you know, I follow both but the way I feel is
00:44:07And this is a take I've had for a while
00:44:10The college product has become better than the NFL product and I felt that way long before this
00:44:17Taylor you look shot. I don't mean the actual like yes, I get me a higher concentration of talent at the NFL level. What?
00:44:23You mean like watching as a fan? It's better to watch
00:44:26I mean at the end of the day the NFL college football sports the whole is an entertainment product
00:44:32That's what it is at the end of the day
00:44:34College football is a better entertainment product than the NFL and
00:44:39I think that I also think it's a a more pure form of the sport
00:44:44People talk about well bill couldn't get a job in the NFL and I think there's truth to that
00:44:49I think if it were up to bills first choice would have been go back to league
00:44:52If there isn't a place for Bill Belichick in the NFL
00:44:56Does that say more about Bill Belichick or does it say more about the NFL? I?
00:45:01Think it's it's just a sign of this continued trend of where the NFL's heading and
00:45:06somehow in the age of NIL and
00:45:10Paying players in the playoff. Oh, there goes my camera
00:45:15Did I just go entirely we got here's
00:45:24Great show we got going we knew there would be some hiccups today. Come on. Yes
00:45:28This is why we brought Taylor and he's the only one who hasn't had technical. Yeah, it's the only one whose stuff works
00:45:35I'll just use the low-def camera here to finish it off. Whatever
00:45:42That should be working there we go in the in the age of NIL and in the college playoff and all of that
00:45:50The NFL has become more corporatized than college football has and if you just want to go
00:45:56And that's not to say that college football isn't more corporate than it was it is
00:46:01but if you just want to go and
00:46:03teach
00:46:04Not just coach, but teach the game
00:46:08The college places is a better option
00:46:11We've talked about this. The NFL is a patience problem. It is a patience problem with coaches
00:46:16It is a patience problem with quarterbacks. It is a patience problem with top draft picks and other positions
00:46:22That exists in college, but not nearly to the same extent there's some mechanics in place that prevented things like buyouts but
00:46:31And this was kind of in the ricochet and piece this morning
00:46:34If you want to go like if bill were to go to New York
00:46:38That's a rebuild and he's got the New York media breathing down his throat and that's gonna take time
00:46:43Time that he may not be given even with his standing he can go to North Carolina
00:46:49Attack the transfer portal
00:46:52Get the kinds of players. He knows will buy into his system and
00:46:56If it doesn't work immediately his job is not going to be on the line
00:47:00he and that's not saying I think he wants to compete right away, and I think he's going to
00:47:05but
00:47:07So that I think this is a sign that for people who care about the sport of football itself
00:47:16College football has surpassed the NFL as a product
00:47:19The other thing about this is from a historical context
00:47:23Well, did you want to see Bill catch Shula? I did I'd be cool
00:47:27There's some real historical
00:47:31Element there's a historical element to this bill Belichick is the greatest coach in the history of the NFL bar none
00:47:37It's not a debate. He doesn't need Shula's record. He's proven that frankly
00:47:41There's not that many things bill could do in the NFL to add to his resume a Super Bowl without Brady would be big
00:47:47Catching Shula would be big. I think he's the greatest coach without that now. I ask you this
00:47:53And I think we agree right bill Belichick is the greatest coach in NFL history
00:47:56Yeah, is bill Belichick the greatest coach in the history of the sport of football?
00:48:04So this gets brought up a lot more in basketball right with with guys like coach K
00:48:09Phil Jackson
00:48:12Does Saban come into play here just some of those other college coaches from the 80s come into play here
00:48:18If bill goes and wins a national championship
00:48:22First of all, there's only four code three coaches in history that have ever won a national championship and a Super Bowl Pete Carroll
00:48:28Barry Switzer, Jimmy Johnson
00:48:30Bill would have done it hasn't happened in like 20 years
00:48:35Pete bill
00:48:37Pete bill bill would be the first to do it
00:48:40Or would have done it in what is the hardest error to win a Super Bowl?
00:48:44And you could argue what is the hardest error to win a national championship?
00:48:49To and there is an argument to made that bill Belichick is the greatest coach of all time period
00:48:54Now he's not going to be the greatest college coach of all time. He's not going to catch Saban
00:48:58He just doesn't have enough time. It's not going to happen
00:49:01But if bill go, I don't even know even if he doesn't win a national championship if he has like three really good years
00:49:06at north carolina
00:49:08Wins a couple conference championships makes a run in the college football playoff
00:49:13To me he submits he cements himself as the greatest coach in the history of the sport
00:49:19level league aside
00:49:20So that's fascinating. And then how does some of the stuff translate college is they it's very stripped down. It's not as
00:49:27Complex schematically is what they run in the nfl. Does bill bring that level of complexity here?
00:49:33That is that's one thing I push back on football trickles up high school
00:49:37Stuff goes to college college stuff goes to the nfl. I would argue that the college has more complexity
00:49:42Well, but like you I I guess what I'm saying is like you don't see colleges running a ton of man coverage
00:49:47Right. It's all kind of just like, you know zone based wrinkles aren't as
00:49:52You still need the talent to be able to run some of the stuff
00:49:55So that's the thing so we're gonna see what he's like in the portal to me if he can he come in can he?
00:49:59Get malik murphy to come from duke
00:50:01Can he flip phase on brandon from tennessee to keep him in state?
00:50:05And I know i'm on a whole thing here. Obviously i've had a lot of time to think about this
00:50:10The one other thing that's gonna be really cool with this
00:50:14I put a uh
00:50:15cough drop in during the
00:50:17He's going great
00:50:19Drive of ram's bills. I knew I knew it was coming here
00:50:22You knew you had a rant a good rant coming up or not not really a rant, but yeah this this going on
00:50:27Here's the last part that really interests me
00:50:30Is and this goes back to the greatest coach in the history of sport thing?
00:50:35We're gonna get bill dava which will be cool and I hope bill beats the bag out of him
00:50:41What happens when he gets the college football playoff?
00:50:43Are we gonna get bill versus steve sarkisian?
00:50:46Are we gonna get bill versus?
00:50:49um
00:50:50I mean like like kirby smart would be interesting, but they're both defensive coaches, but like
00:50:54bill versus lincoln riley
00:50:56Bill versus some of these the best offensive minds in the sport are no longer in the nfl
00:51:01They're in college
00:51:03bill versus dan lanning
00:51:05like
00:51:06It's another chance for him to just check a box. So that's the rant
00:51:10But I love this for bill. I love this for the sport of football. The only loser here today is the nfl
00:51:18the sport as a whole gains
00:51:20college football gains
00:51:22I think this is a chance for bill to do
00:51:25Catching shula is historic would be historic and I think I don't think I know people talking about the buyout
00:51:30I think this is bill's last job for however long he's there. I think it's his last job. So, all right, maybe he doesn't
00:51:37catch shula
00:51:39having
00:51:40national level success at unc
00:51:43Would be historic in a in a in its own unique way that you could argue not from an nfl standpoint from a
00:51:50Football the sport standpoint and that's why I think you have these different viewpoints
00:51:55If you're viewing it from the nfl standpoint, this is he's giving up or whatever
00:51:59From if you view it the sport as a whole and you heard him speak today the reverence
00:52:03He has for college football in the sport as a whole. He can do something truly historic here at unc and I think that's awesome
00:52:08All right. That's my that's my the only like I I agree with a lot of that
00:52:13Why can't he just say that like why does he have to run the seth wickersham?
00:52:18And be like I hate the nfl like the nfl today is embarrassing or whatever the quotes was like why
00:52:26why can't he just
00:52:27like
00:52:28Go coach college. He seems to I I agree. I think he wants to be in the nfl. I do
00:52:34believe but like
00:52:36Why can't he just play into some of that stuff?
00:52:38You said instead of doing this whole back channel like oh the nfl is not the same like they don't deserve me or whatever
00:52:45That that kind of that kind of stuff because he's bill and and i'll say
00:52:49Would he rather be in the nfl?
00:52:50Yes, people are acting like he's being forced to do this or like this is you know
00:52:55A safety I I think he has genuine interest in doing this
00:52:59Right. It'd be one thing if he went to like the ufl
00:53:02rip him
00:53:03but
00:53:05and the other thing
00:53:06Did he say it out of spite maybe?
00:53:09It needed to be said the nfl needs to hear that
00:53:13A league that does not have yes a league that does not have place for bill belichick
00:53:18Needed to hear that needed to be said. This is it goes back to the take
00:53:23This has been building for a few years. Now. The nfl has gotten complacent. The product has suffered
00:53:30And something like that it's not going to be viewed through that lens by everybody
00:53:34But the people who do follow both
00:53:37That's going to resonate big time
00:53:39So
00:53:41Taylor any thoughts
00:53:45Only a couple one alex knows much more about the college game than me
00:53:48So i'm not going to like I and it was a very well articulated argument
00:53:51So I don't want to step on it. I will say no. I mean like feel free like I I it's a unique take
00:53:56I fully and I i'm coming from this from a very unique position. I acknowledge that
00:54:01My biggest pushbacks are one. I just personally I prefer watching professionals over amateurs for the most part
00:54:09now there are also some nfl games where they look like amateurs and then there's college games where you're just getting like
00:54:15A bunch of really good players duking it out. I'm not saying every game is created equal
00:54:19But for the most part i'd rather watch a bad nfl game than a bad college game
00:54:23You know, so that being said also the other way around
00:54:27also
00:54:28The whole thing with they're not being placed in the nfl for bill
00:54:31So
00:54:33I
00:54:34Understand there are teams that are in more of a win now mode who can absolutely benefit from his services
00:54:39But it's like last offseason. I wasn't really surprised that he wasn't signed because i'm like this is a 70 year old man
00:54:46Who is trying to get a record that's probably only going to keep him in the league for a couple years
00:54:50And he wants to control the entire organization
00:54:54Even last year when we talked about the cowboys being a potential suitor
00:54:56I was we talked about it in the workroom and i'm like, I don't think he's going to want to work with jerry jones
00:55:00And I don't think jerry jones is going to work with him to be very honest
00:55:03i'm sure they have a lot of professional respect and all that but like
00:55:06Is jerry jones going to give up control of his team to anybody? Hell? No, not until he
00:55:12so
00:55:13I just don't think there's a whole lot of organizations that fit what bill belichick is a guy who wants to control everything from the
00:55:18Ground up because he earned at new england, but obviously it took a long time and somebody who's not going to be around for very long
00:55:23So it's awesome to see he got an opportunity in a place where his family has history. That's very cool
00:55:28But i'm really not surprised once again
00:55:30That bill belichick isn't going to be in the nfl because I think there's too many young up-and-coming coaches
00:55:35Even a guy like mike rabel who obviously not as decorated but is highly respected has a successful track record
00:55:41And is much younger and can be in the league for a couple more decades if he wanted to so
00:55:46You know, obviously I I think the bill belichick can still coach
00:55:49I don't think that's a question especially on the defensive side of the ball
00:55:51But for somebody who wants control has not succeeded very much as a gm on once again the offensive side of the ball
00:55:57No one questions his ability to evaluate coach defense
00:56:00But there's two sides of the coin and even special teams for the patriots were pretty terrible the last few years
00:56:04So I just don't think it's all that crazy at the nfl's like yeah
00:56:08I'm gonna pass especially with ollie connelly on uh in his piece today on raid optional talking about how bill
00:56:13Burned a lot of bridges on his way out of the league. We already know like he shut out bill o'brien
00:56:18He shut out robert kraft. He shut out mac jones. I'm sorry, bro
00:56:22that's a really bad and you were losing and playing really bad football your last few years like
00:56:27That's not a good look college. Very different. That's
00:56:30Foundational you're helping raise young men all this blah blah blah
00:56:33But like the nfl is a different ball game and the game hasn't passed him by but I think the offensive side in terms of
00:56:38team building and management
00:56:41You know, it's just it's really hard to feel confident if you were going to have a bill belichick running your squad
00:56:46Uh a couple things first off
00:56:50Team brady and bill saying the product has uh dipped
00:56:53So i'm i'm not saying well, I I do agree that the quality has dipped i'm not
00:56:57But i'd still rather watch like jaguars
00:57:00Raiders than you know, hawaii versus actually is why fair? I don't know. It was really bad, right?
00:57:05I guess when you say like you'd rather watch a a good nfl game versus good college game or a bad
00:57:12Nfl game versus bad college game. I get where you're coming from with that
00:57:16I I just think that the gap
00:57:18Between the two has closed that you don't see as much of a difference between the two
00:57:22like a bad nfl game looks a lot more like a bad college game than it used to and
00:57:27A higher percentage of college games, I would say are closer and more competitive and the teams are closer to each other roster wise
00:57:34This seems more one score games in nfl history than ever before before the season's over
00:57:39I'm, not really pushing against that hard, but that is oh, yeah
00:57:42Half of that is the chiefs to play just a completely unwatchable
00:57:47Teams out it completely shatters
00:57:49the other the other thing, um
00:57:52You said there that I wanted to address about yeah
00:57:55So and this is this is where I get to the the corporatization of the nfl
00:57:59And you talked about every team wants the next up and coming guy
00:58:03And that's a very corporate approach. Everybody wants to be forward thinking and I get that I understand it, but
00:58:11It's the
00:58:12It's the mystery box in the boat, right?
00:58:15Well, we want to find the next great coach
00:58:17We want to find a great coach that nobody else has found so we can say we found him and we can be trailblazers
00:58:23We want to find a guy who's who's going to be among the best coaching league
00:58:27All right. Well guys already proven to be among the best coaches in the league. It was right there
00:58:30But you don't get credit for finding him
00:58:32And he doesn't fit your whole corporate structure because he's not from this era
00:58:37like it's just it's
00:58:40The foresight is and I get why I get like like you talked about the these teams want to build forward thinking and bill
00:58:47He's here. He's here for a good time
00:58:49Not a long time if he's not in the nfl team, like I get that
00:58:51But you would think one of these teams that is on the precipice
00:58:54We see teams do this with quarterbacks
00:58:57Right. They add the veteran quarterback who's probably cooked, but they'll still add them and
00:59:03What'd you say rogers, okay, I was about to say like
00:59:07That's that's basically the bellagio situation as a player but obviously
00:59:13Not gonna tear his acl and he's not a complete lunatic who's gonna go in a cabin in the woods
00:59:18so
00:59:19like that's that's where i'm coming from like
00:59:22Everybody's so caught up in finding the next guy
00:59:25Hey, the guy that was the standard for 20 years is available
00:59:29Don't look past him trying to find the next guy and that I think is and and the same thing happens at the quarterback position
00:59:36With these owners and it's a big part of the reason that the quality of play in the league is dipped
00:59:43And that when I say, you know
00:59:45They're not being a spot in the league for bill says more about the league than it does bill
00:59:51That's what i'm talking about
00:59:52And I don't think you're wrong there and I agree with a lot of those points
00:59:55I will my one small pushback is I think with the creativity thing one
00:59:59Everyone wants the next great offensive coordinator because everyone thinks it's the offensive even though
01:00:04Obviously we've seen the past couple years defensive pretty damn important
01:00:07But you're not seeing a defensive evolution where everybody wants, you know
01:00:10The next guy who's going to be like, you know, who's a like a mike mcdonald or whomever everyone wants offense
01:00:15Offense naturally those guys are more creative thinking because you have to actually innovate whereas defensive guys are really pulling like, okay
01:00:23That's the innovation. How can I counter it?
01:00:25It's not quite the same like I know
01:00:26Actually ollie made a great point and compared bill walsh and bill belichick and how yeah, they're similarly successful, but they think differently
01:00:33So I think that's part of the creativity thing and why the youth is so exciting because it's like oh
01:00:37Here's this guy with a fresh take with this offensive revolution. That's going to give us a bigger advantage
01:00:42It's going to take other teams maybe a couple of years to catch up to but that's a very small pushback
01:00:46I agree with almost everything else you said. Yeah, so I
01:00:49Like I get it like teams want the next offensive guy and I understand why
01:00:54not one team's gonna look at it and be like there's only so many of those guys and
01:00:57This guy's pretty good at defense and that's a big part of the game too. And by the way, he's proven he can do like
01:01:02I guess that's my point is is it's so
01:01:05Look, there's there used to be seven or eight core offensive systems that were run in the nfl. How many are there now two?
01:01:12Three if we're being generous like west coast air raid aaron hart perkins kind of honestly
01:01:16Who's even running that because how many air hard perks is kind of it's it's west coast and it's spread air raid like that's it
01:01:23Defensively and you there used to be you know, you'd have three three four teams four three teams handful teams run a four six
01:01:29Everybody runs fan gnome. That's what they do. It's everybody. It's just carbon copy carbon copy
01:01:34Everybody is just trying to copy their neighbor the idea of a copycat league has gotten out of control
01:01:39college
01:01:40It's as diverse as ever
01:01:42And so you get more desperation in college like just that's why it trickles up because high school coaches are more desperate
01:01:48College coaches are more desperate the nfl like you have the talent and a lot of the time you want to keep it simple
01:01:53Until like the patriots where like when stephon gilmore first got here
01:01:57They played a ton of zone not a lot of man. They sucked
01:02:00But then once they got more comfortable more man exotic blitzes and you know, that's where you start going, right? Well, I guess
01:02:08The point is about is such a fun discussion. I appreciate you having me because evan would shut this down 20 minutes ago
01:02:14You watch the niners play the vikings
01:02:17And you watch the chiefs play the dolphins
01:02:21You're kind of watching the same game
01:02:24You it's going to look very similar if you watch
01:02:27colorado
01:02:29play oregon
01:02:31And you watch ohio state play, tennessee
01:02:34You're seeing four very distinct unique styles of football. Yeah
01:02:39Yeah, so I mean this is so far from the belch
01:02:43Tennessee offense belongs and it's all a whole separate
01:02:47Tennessee and that'll come to the nfl eventually, but that's that's what it was
01:02:52So I am curious for you taylor's as a scheme guy
01:02:56Are how does the belichick scheme translate college?
01:03:00That's what I will agree with everyone runs the same thing
01:03:04Every time i'm scouting now and trying to see like where opponents are vulnerable
01:03:08I am just able to find like five games like consecutively. We're just west coast offense west coast offense
01:03:14Literally the exact same concepts which is is very funny. You're totally right there
01:03:19Defensively like how many times has drake may played this fangio style now that they're going to see again
01:03:25This week in arizona like it's just week after mcdonald's tree
01:03:29They face like four guys just from that baltimore kind of area like weaver. Um, i'm blanking right now
01:03:36But yeah, they've seen a ton of those guys. So it's
01:03:39To go back to the original point because taylor I saw your look when I first said it
01:03:42So I just want to clarify like when I say the college product's better than the nfl product if you want to go watch
01:03:49individual players
01:03:52Executing at a technically high level the nfl is always going to be king
01:03:55but
01:03:56if you are looking for
01:03:58vibes
01:04:00Competitive not just vibes if you are looking for
01:04:02The most competitive games that take in the chess match of football
01:04:08It's in it's in college now way more than is in the nfl
01:04:11and you get 18 year olds throwing shoes and
01:04:15Doing and then you get and then you do get the whole vibes thing and the nonsense. I I mean, come on
01:04:20That was how was people really deciding policy?
01:04:23Right
01:04:24Was it the ad or the chancellor at the press conference today that cut the sleeves off his jacket?
01:04:31You're not going to see an nfl owner do that. Come on
01:04:34Like that's and then you have that element, which is very fun. Yeah
01:04:38Ultimately, I do wish he got back in the nfl, but it is going to be entertaining
01:04:43I'm going to watch i'm sure you guys are going to watch and pay attention. We need
01:04:48Acc title game belichick o'brien. That will be appointment television. Uh if we get it
01:04:54I mean, we're gonna I fully plan on doing a unc minute on mondays next year. Well, we could definitely do that
01:05:02um
01:05:03i'm sure with the 12 team playoff too, like maybe not this year, but
01:05:08he'll be
01:05:10Competitive for that like they'll be in the mix of teams in those like 8 to 12 seeds i'm sure in a few years because
01:05:18You can bit like he'll build his defense in a running game
01:05:21Like he how he wants to play football bill belichick wants to play football and you can compete in the acc
01:05:26Uh like that so they're going to be competitive
01:05:28I'm sure he'll be knocking on the door of the playoffs in a few years. I do again, which he
01:05:33Did get back to the nfl game, but this will be entertaining
01:05:37The last question I have
01:05:39Uh on that we did talk to brian belichick. We talked to mike pellegrino. Both of them said they were on
01:05:44Uh focusing on the cardinals. Do you expect any of them to go with bill?
01:05:50Or like any other patriots coaches to kind of follow bill
01:05:55Uh to this unc staff that he's putting together
01:05:57He said he's had a lot of talks and conversations with nfl people that are coming to be on this
01:06:03Nfl style staff, so do you think any of them?
01:06:07You know these guys with the patriots brian obviously is the big one pellegrino grew up, you know under bill's watch here his whole career
01:06:15So do you see those two guys or anyone else on this staff kind of following him to unc?
01:06:20um
01:06:22I hate to take cop out answer. Let's see who he hires as a defensive coordinator
01:06:26Right if it's somebody pellegrino worked with I think there's there's more
01:06:31Right, is it steve like I think that certainly changes things so
01:06:37Yeah, I I mean it's a possibility. I also don't know like I think
01:06:41Mike pellegrino is an nfl coach to me like his style is just more nfl and that's not a
01:06:47A positive or a negative. It's just some guys are nfl coaches. Some guys are college coaches
01:06:51Brian, I can see you know, it's his dad. It's a little different. Um, but I had both would be a big loss
01:06:56I just I've spoken very highly of mike pellegrino the job he's done in terms of player development
01:07:01so it definitely for someone like pellegrino like
01:07:05Kind of seems like a downgrade right just going nfl to college and I don't know his future aspirations, you know, taylor
01:07:11We were kind of talking about that the other day like what does he want to be like?
01:07:14Does he want to be a defensive coordinator and work his way up like going?
01:07:19From nfl to college cornerback coach like that
01:07:22That's a tough kind of career path if he wants to go continue trendward upward. So brian though as you said
01:07:30Is a little different just because it is his dad so i'll say this too on it
01:07:34What happens with demarcus covington?
01:07:36Right if demarcus covington gets let go and it's one of these elliot wolf packer guys
01:07:40Who's going to want to bring in his own staff then? Yeah, I think you absolutely, you know before you get fired
01:07:46Go take a job there and get out if covington's still here. Uh, it makes it a little different of a conversation
01:07:53Definitely. All right
01:07:54We will uh wrap it up there one last word before we go if you want to go see bill belichick coach
01:08:02He's not what he comes to
01:08:04Uconn in 27. That's the first time back in new england. I think it is. Yeah
01:08:09But uh, maybe he'll be at the fenway bowl unc uconn in a few weeks. I assume he'll be there
01:08:14He's not going to coach it, but I assume he'll be there
01:08:16He should be there. So if you want to go to that or any other game, make sure you guys are using game time
