00:31Let's start with a couple of headlines, Gregg, that stood out to me.
00:35First Gerard Mayo comes out on Sunday after a brutal game against Jacksonville in London
00:40and calls his team soft.
00:42Then he goes on the Gregg Hill Show less than 24 hours later and says, well, we're not soft,
00:46we're just playing soft.
00:48What's going on with Gerard Mayo and these press conferences and can he help himself?
00:53No, he really can't.
00:56I think, Nick, he's getting into it worse and worse seemingly every week.
01:04What he said on Sunday after the game, you just can't say it.
01:08And I understand he said that to the players before that, but publicly he cannot say that.
01:17There's nothing worse as a football player than being called soft.
01:21And I know he wasn't individually talking about it and I'm sure, you know, he meant
01:25it collectively.
01:26Obviously, we're a soft football team because, you know, we can't run the ball, we can't
01:31stop the run, we can't cover kicks.
01:33You know, I understand all that.
01:35But you can't say that publicly.
01:41You know, it's yes, you said it to the players and that's fine.
01:44And that's one thing.
01:45And I also think there's a problem with that.
01:48Basically what Gerard needed to do, he needs to take ownership of what's going on with
01:52this team.
01:53He's the freaking head coach of the team.
01:56If his team is soft, if they can't run the ball, if they can't stop the run, if they
02:00can't do any of these things, it's on him.
02:04If you have a soft football team as a head coach, you are soft.
02:07He needs to come out and say, I'm responsible for this.
02:11Obviously, it's not going well.
02:13I am going to figure out the answers.
02:15I'm going to give them the solutions and we'll go from there.
02:20But you know, Nick, after watching the film, and to be honest, like I had a hard time getting
02:25through the defensive film.
02:27I was so disgusted with what I saw.
02:29And it wasn't, here's what I would say.
02:33After watching the film, I would not call any of these guys soft.
02:36I wouldn't even use that word because it's not for a lack of effort.
02:41It's two things.
02:42Number one, they're undermanned.
02:45On offense, they're undermanned at the two guard spots.
02:48Michael Jordan, who had been a bright spot, was terrible in this game.
02:51I don't know why.
02:52I don't know if he was sick.
02:53I don't know if he was hurt or he just turned into a pumpkin because he really is a backup
02:57type guy.
02:58That's what he was here.
02:59Siddy Stowe, into the game, was terrible.
03:02So when you have, when your two guards get their lunches handed to them all game, you're
03:06not going to be able to run the ball.
03:09Defensively, up front, this has been a criticism that we've had going back to the offseason
03:16about not doing more, especially in light of moving on from Lawrence guy.
03:20Like, all right, well, what are you going to do to replace him?
03:23Who are you going to bring in?
03:24Like you can't just let it go and bring in all these undersized guys, Jeremiah Farms
03:30and Daniel Ekowale and all this stuff.
03:32What happens if Godchild get hurt?
03:34What happens if Farmore gets hurt?
03:36What are you going to do?
03:37And they're getting, they're getting a little bit exposed, but that's not, that's not the
03:41issue.
03:42So yes, they're undermanned.
03:43The bigger problem to me, Nick, is they have a coaching staff that doesn't know how to
03:49come up with solutions.
03:50Every team is shorthanded in some area or multiple areas, but it's on the coaches to
03:56come up with a plan to say, all right, we're deficient here.
03:59This is how we win this week.
04:01What I saw on film, I mean, just constant gaps.
04:05No one's in gaps, Nick.
04:07Like there's not anybody there.
04:09Christian Ellis is going out with Ingram.
04:11Well, who has that gap then?
04:13Nobody has it.
04:14Jags run right through it.
04:15There's blown coverages.
04:16There's two guys covering people like they looked completely unprepared.
04:22They look horribly coached and you combine all that.
04:26That's what happens on Sunday.
04:27And like, to me, I've just, I was, it was, it was a rough watch.
04:32I was offended for the players.
04:35It's it's on Gerard Mayo and his coaches and they need to come up with solutions or else
04:41this is going to get worse and worse every week.
04:43I thought I spoke volumes that Devin McCourty went out publicly on Sunday night and said,
04:49quote, the first thing I think of is toughness isn't a skillset.
04:52You don't need to be fast to do anything special, to be tough.
04:54The second part of that is why Gerard?
04:56Why is this team not tough?
04:58When you hear a team isn't tough and they are soft, you think, what is the head coach doing?
05:02How is he getting them ready to go?
05:04Mayo and that staff have a lot of questions to answer going in the next week.
05:08That's Devin McCourty.
05:09That's a guy who is friendly with Gerard Mayo, uh, who liked the hire and he's going
05:15out there national television saying what he said.
05:19And I think that tells us an awful lot.
05:21It's the coaching right now.
05:23It is absolutely hands down.
05:25The coaching.
05:26We'll get into it a little bit more deeper in a minute, but I did want to ask you about
05:29Bill Belichick because of course Belichick sees what Mayo said on Sunday and he's licking
05:34his chops to feast on those words.
05:37Your thoughts on Belichick, uh, defending the team being soft and going after Gerard
05:42Mayo the last couple of media appearances.
05:44Yeah, I look, I don't love that.
05:47Um, he doesn't say anything when they win or when they won in week one, um, you know,
05:53just try to be consistent.
05:54Um, if he would have said if he would have given Mayo and the coaches their flowers after
05:58week one, and then he did this, I'd be fine with it.
06:00But to, to all to do this at this point, uh, I think it reflects poorly on bill.
06:06That being said, I will say, Nick, I don't know about you, but I feel like I'm in the
06:10middle of a movie right now.
06:12It's like, uh, like crimson tide or toy shoulders or something like that.
06:17You have the deposed dictator who's been exiled, who's out of the building, but he's sending
06:22like messages to his guys, like, you know, if you rise up and there's an insurrection,
06:28then, uh, you know, it's just like, that's, that's how I took where he's like calling,
06:33you know, John Jones isn't soft and Keon white and Kyle Duggar, like all these guys
06:38and you could just see them all being like perking up like a, like a, he, they heard
06:42the whistle.
06:43They heard the, the, the siren call from the deposed leader.
06:46And they're going to be like, you know, storm the castle or something like that.
06:50It's just, uh, I don't, it, the thing is, Nick, we're not even halfway through the season
06:55and they're weeks away from the bi-week like, holy hell.
07:01Uh, the Belichick stuff, just a couple of quick thoughts.
07:04I mean, it's not that he's lying, uh, and what he says.
07:10Okay.
07:11But it is a little bit rich and look, I understand the, the history and I appreciate it.
07:16We always have to throw the caveat out there because people will lose their minds.
07:20He won six Superbowls.
07:21I'm well aware, but it is kind of rich a guy who was like what, nine games or whatever
07:26under 500 post Brady is out there just throwing, you know, Mayo under the bus for some things
07:31and the team not playing well.
07:32It's like, well, bill, it's your defense played well last year, but you did have a four win
07:36season last year.
07:38So I don't know how much I'd be puffing out my chest.
07:41Uh, the other part of it is, you know, the Belichick Saquon Barkley thing.
07:46I mentioned this on Twitter, what he said about Barkley during Monday night football
07:51about, oh yeah, the, the New York giants, uh, yet they don't keep one of their best
07:56players in house because of a couple of million dollars, they go out and pay a guard instead.
08:01And that drove me up a wall.
08:03And I had people on Twitter who look, it's my fault.
08:07I'm looking for people to, to, to use critical thinking on Twitter.
08:11That's my fault.
08:12That's not their fault.
08:13They are who they are.
08:14I'm not comparing Jacoby Myers to Saquon Barkley.
08:18If anybody is thinking that with, with no critical part of that element, okay.
08:24What, what, what drives me crazy is that's so hypocritical from bill.
08:27Like you let Jacoby Myers walk over $1 million a year when he was your best wide receiver
08:32in that room.
08:33You decided not to pay DeAndre Hopkins a couple of extra million that would have brought DeAndre
08:38Hopkins onto the team.
08:39Instead, you spent that money on giving Devante Parker, a guy who has now retired extra money.
08:45You sit there and you kind of besmirch the idea of spending money on a guard when you
08:50went out and spent a first round pick on Cole strange because you completely mismanaged
08:54the position bill.
08:55Like it's just, it's this, it's this delusional world that, that he's living in, that he's
09:00able to just throw these barbs out there.
09:02And it's like, I get it.
09:03I understand Rex Ryan does the same stuff.
09:05All former coaches do it, but it just kind of makes me laugh.
09:08It's like, uh, do you look in the mirror and see your last four or five years running the
09:12Patriots?
09:13Because it certainly wasn't always butterflies and roses there, Bill Belichick.
09:17So that's the stuff that kind of irritates me.
09:20One last thing, KJ Osborne goes on social media, shares a message that he had with his
09:27agent after the touchdown celebration against the Jaguars, where he does the whole call
09:32me motion.
09:33Uh, then you have Jalen Polk with the peace sign emoji via social media, which he deleted
09:38later, Greg, I'm sure you agree with me.
09:43But man, oh man, the wide receivers, they got to calm the hell down with this kind of
09:46stuff.
09:47Yeah.
09:48And, uh, you know, what's, what's interesting, Nick, and, and I don't know if we've talked
09:51about this and I mentioned it on TV on Sunday night, but I go back to a conversation I had
09:56with somebody in the off season, NFL source who, who knows Tyler Hughes, who's the chief
10:02wide receivers coach, Taekwon Underwood is the, the assistant wide receivers coach.
10:07And they were looking at some of the people they brought in, especially Javon Baker, um,
10:11who we all know had had issues.
10:13Um, remember we talked about, you know, I wrote that, that's that column on the character
10:18risks that this front office took more than normal.
10:21And, you know, Jalen Polk, you know, um, I was surprised that somebody, and I couldn't
10:27get specifics and I readily admitted that, but there was a, a, a front office executive
10:33who said, yeah, Polk's kind of got a red flag too, but I couldn't figure out what that was.
10:38I mean, maybe is it maturity now in hindsight, maturity, dealing with adversity, but that,
10:44that NFL source was talking about the wide receiver room and he's like, Hmm, this should
10:48be interesting.
10:49And I was like, what are you talking about?
10:50And he's like, you know, Tyler Hughes, wonderful man, family man.
10:55Um, he's from what I understand what he, what the source told me he's Mormon, which, you
11:01know, fine.
11:02I don't care what religion you are, but they were just using as an example of like, he's,
11:06you know, he's very, uh, he's very religious, very, um, straight and narrow and stuff like
11:12that.
11:13They were like, Hmm, should be interested to see how he handles that room.
11:16That room is a little bit out of control, but this is why you bring in a Taekwon Thor
11:21Underwood who, uh, was a player, um, who, you know, is an impeccable character, um,
11:28who's in my opinion, some, somebody that these guys can look up to, but, um, yeah, they got
11:32to get that straightened out.
11:33Cause it's a freaking disaster.
11:35We'll get to Drake man, the offense, but quickly, Greg, tell the fine people about prize picks.
11:40Prize picks is America's number one daily fantasy sports app with over 5 million active
11:44members.
11:45Prize picks is the easiest and most exciting way to play daily fantasy sports.
11:48All you do is pick more or less on two to six player stat projections and watch the
11:53winnings roll in.
11:54You can now win up to a hundred times your money on prize picks with as little as four
11:57correct picks.
11:58I didn't hit this week mostly because DeMario Douglas, like all of a sudden decided to get
12:04sick and, uh, you know, barely played.
12:08Um, but like I told people, I said, I picked it wrong on hunter Henry.
12:12I said, go over on the fantasy points.
12:15And that turned out to be correct because he was a monster in this game.
12:18Looks like he's got a good rapport with Drake may going forward, download the prize picks
12:22app today and use code CLNS and get $50 instantly.
12:25When you play $5, that's code CLNS on prize picks to get $50 instantly.
12:29When you play $5, you don't even need to win to receive the $50 bonus.
12:35It's guaranteed prize picks, run your game.
12:37What'd you think of Drake May's performance, Greg?
12:40I was, uh, I was impressed with Drake May in this game.
12:44And this is an example of why you have to be honest when you're grading these players.
12:50So you can see like where they are making progress.
12:53And for all the people who got mad at me last week, because I gave Drake May a C minus and
12:58he didn't grade out way or well for me, I do not take that back at all.
13:04And in fact, Drake's performance on Sunday reinforced exactly what I thought in week
13:09one.
13:10I thought he was, I thought he was much improved.
13:13I thought he, I only had him leave in the pocket early once, um, look, was it perfect?
13:19No, he still has some accuracy issues.
13:22Um, you know, I, I thought his decision-making was better.
13:25I love his, he's so straight line, um, in terms of his emotions.
13:31Um, he, he can handle, uh, he can handle adversity.
13:36He can handle curve balls.
13:38He can handle, uh, the bullets from the other team, which is great.
13:42And it's only his second start and he's doing this, the throw to, uh, Keishon Booty was
13:48just incredible of a big time throw.
13:51He cut down on his errors.
13:53Yeah.
13:54He had two near interceptions, um, and which I marked them down for because those should
13:58have been interceptions.
14:00Um, but for the most part, I thought he played really well.
14:03And in fact, I would go so far as I thought with what was going on in the game.
14:08And then this is another example, Nick of the coaching staff, not, not adjusting, not
14:13having solutions to what's going on in this team, especially in real time.
14:18Um, I would have let, I would have let Drake sling it around, um, especially in the second
14:24half with what was going on.
14:26You know, I, I didn't have a huge on rewatch.
14:28I didn't have a huge problem with what Alex van Pelt did other than that one drive with
14:33the hasty run from minus one, the Hunter Henry screen from minus four.
14:38Like that was, that was a horrible series, but the big problem was they only had one
14:43possession in the third quarter.
14:45And by the time they got possessions in the fourth quarter, the game was largely over.
14:48So, uh, I, I was very impressed with Drake may, I would say I would have him in the B
14:53range in this game, but this is what you want to see.
14:58Nick, we talked last week.
14:59I said, he was making plays.
15:01You want to see him maintain that or get a little bit more, made a few more plays in
15:05this game, check Mark.
15:06You want him to see the, the, the mental errors that those decisions, the minus plays
15:12go down, check Mark.
15:14Uh, and so, and he took care of the ball better in some respects.
15:19Uh, so to me, I thought it was, uh, it was a great step forward for Drake.
15:23May showed a lot of improvement.
15:25Steve varsity and how he handles it stood out to me again for the second straight week.
15:29You've got no run game, absolutely zero run game.
15:32Uh, your offensive line is shuffling again because you lose Leighton Robinson early in
15:37the game.
15:38Uh, your best receiver who would have been an absolute great matchup against this
15:43Jaguars defense, Jaguars, the worst defense in football heading into the weekend against
15:48slot receivers.
15:49Now you have a limited pop Douglas, the one guy that you feel like, all right, we can
15:53get the ball to him and he did great last weekend.
15:55So limited pop, no run game, shuffling up the offensive line.
15:59First game in London, you're, you're in, you know, your internal clock is a little
16:03bit off all that adversity stuff for him to overcome.
16:05It is impressive.
16:07As far as AVP, I got two problems with AVP, actually three.
16:11Number one, from the, from the scripted plays to the rest of the game, there's a
16:16huge difference.
16:17Screams to me of a guy that goes into the game with time to plan and prepare for the
16:23first 12 to 15 plays and has a clear idea how he wants to utilize his talent, make the
16:28most of his quarterback situation, et cetera, et cetera.
16:32Then when the game is, as you said, real time and he has to adjust within the game, I
16:36think he's been mostly brutal.
16:38I thought on Sunday against the Jaguars, look, I understand the run game was an issue
16:42because of the offensive line.
16:44My problem with Van Pelt is that he didn't do anything creatively to get the run game
16:49going.
16:50He kept doing the same thing over and over and over again.
16:52For the most part, I'll give you an example.
16:54There weren't any toss plays.
16:56There weren't any pitch plays.
16:57There weren't any jet sweeps.
16:58There weren't any designed runs for Drake May that I saw.
17:01There weren't bubble screens to wide receivers saying, Hey, look, we can't run the
17:04football in early downs.
17:06So let's replace the run game by throwing a bubble screen.
17:09Like we did the Kendrick Bourne against the Texans to try to get some good momentum.
17:13There was absolutely none of that.
17:16And that's on him.
17:17Like you keep running into a brick wall and you expect the brick wall to crumble.
17:22It's not going to crumble.
17:24So do something.
17:25How about pony formation with both Gibson and Stevenson in the backfield?
17:30How about you try?
17:31I know we had at least one snap, maybe a couple snaps in the pistol formation when you
17:34have the running back directly behind Drake May.
17:37How about doing that?
17:39The lack of the idea of we're going against the Jaguars who have been God awful
17:43against mobile quarterbacks and you don't really, you know, call any designed runs for
17:47the quarterback.
17:48That's an egregious mistake by the offensive coordinator, especially when you're trying
17:52to run the football and you can't get it going.
17:53How about you use your quarterback to get going?
17:56His knee was obviously fine.
17:57He was off the injury report.
17:59He was scrambling around.
18:01So why don't you throw a couple of designed runs by the quarterback at the defense to
18:04try to shake them up a little bit?
18:06It's like, no, we're just going to continue to do what we do and it's not working.
18:10It's insane to me.
18:11It's absolutely insane.
18:13And the final thing I'll say is lack of creativity, Greg.
18:16I mean, we talked about it before the game.
18:18This defense in Jacksonville is very undisciplined.
18:22No trick plays, no nothing.
18:24No, again, outside.
18:26I thought the first drive, the first couple of drives and I tweeted this, I thought they
18:29were really good.
18:31And I thought Van Pelt on the third down, first third down of the game, he actually
18:35helped both tackles on the play.
18:37Good job, Alex.
18:38Good job.
18:39But then after the first 12 to 15 plays, they fall off a cliff and he looks like a
18:43dude who's playing Madden for the first time, searching through the playbook, having
18:47no idea what he's going to do.
18:48So it's an issue and he better get better over the next couple of weeks because I'm
18:54about my wits end with with Alex Van Pelt.
18:57But there's more because the defense also has to be talked about and Demarcus
19:00Covington. But first, Greg, we'll tell you about game time.
19:03NBA season is upon us.
19:06And by the time you probably listen to this, the, the Celtics have already raised the
19:09banner and Nixon going crazy, you know, raising his own mini banner.
19:15Celtics at Celtics shirt today.
19:17I'm ready, Greg banner night, baby.
19:20And I'm sure at some point this season, Nick's going to be there in person because
19:24to really experience the NBA, you got to be there in person.
19:27All the sites, sounds, celebrities, all that stuff.
19:30Green teamers, and you got to get the game time.

20:09then come back home on the train.

20:25What time is it game time?
20:27We know the problems on defense.
20:29They can't stop the run and they got almost no pressure on
20:33Trevor Lawrence in London.
20:36Greg, what could Demarcus Covington do as you sit there?
20:39You talked about real time, lack of adjustments.
20:41Just give some, give the people out there listening, watching an idea as to what
20:45Covington could try to do to try to fix some of these problems.
20:51Well, the first thing that I would do, Nick, and we, I think we sort of talk
20:55about this on offense, but, um, uh, they need to simplify what they're doing.
21:01Um, I know they're getting down there in depth.
21:04I mean, you know, for example, like, you know, they're getting run on and, you
21:07know, Marte Mapu's out there, like faking, like I'm going to be here, but
21:11then dropping into coverage, like, what the hell are we doing?
21:15Go play freaking defense, just getting the four, three or the three, four, or
21:19what have you, and just go play football.
21:22And when that was happening, the 17, 18 straight runs, you know, as a coach,
21:29Gerard Mayo needs to get on the horn and say, look, enough's a freak enough.
21:35All right.
21:35Getting goal line.
21:37If they want to throw it, they throw a touchdown.
21:39I don't care.
21:40They ain't running anymore on us.
21:42You know, there are things that you can do.
21:43You can shoot gaps.
21:44You can call run blitzes.
21:46You can get into the bare front, you know, the 46 and say, this
21:49is where we're going to play.
21:50And they're like, if you have confidence, this is what I don't get.
21:53Like, you know, with their cover guys that are good, Gonzalez and the Jones
21:57boys, and we've talked about this before this, like, why don't they get into
22:01more, you know, zero coverage and just start sending people, um, you know,
22:06this, the biggest problem, Nick, with this team is they don't, this
22:11coaching staff has no answers.
22:12They have no solutions to what's going on.
22:15Um, and, and it's, it's leaving the team doubly short.
22:20I mean, and look, Mayo is responsible.
22:24I mean, he should be insulted.
22:25He should be embarrassed that it's the biggest problem on this team right
22:29now, because of what Drake may is doing is the defense that it's the
22:33defense is the middle of the defense.
22:35The defense is his baby.
22:37He used to be an inside linebacker, like that's his position.
22:40And now they are getting an embarrassed because of it.
22:42And all Mayo does is point at the players and call them soft.
22:46Like it's not going to go over well.
22:49Evan Lazar wrote about this, but their base personnel is getting
22:52murdered and, uh, they continue to stay in their base personnel.
22:55It's on, uh, what are we doing?
22:59What are we, Covington was supposed to be the coordinator
23:02that was ready for this.
23:04What are we doing?
23:06Uh, I know you got to run to Felger and Maz in a couple of minutes here, Greg,
23:09but let me ask you this first quickly.
23:13Yes or no.
23:14Do you know if Gerard Mayo has been involved with the defensive side, uh,
23:20going into like last weekend, first six, seven weeks of the season, has he
23:24been involved more on the defensive end or has he been doing the whole CEO thing?
23:30Uh, I don't know that answer.
23:32Um, I, I will know more by the end of the week, I think, but my inclination
23:38is to say that, um, he's, he's been taking the scenic route that he has been,
23:44uh, contracting out everything on this team has not dug into the details.
23:49And that's what we're seeing on the field.
23:51I mean, because like, no, look, Nick, we talked about it after the dolphins game.
23:55You know, he, he said, there's no question.
23:58We're tough defense and special teams played well enough to win.
24:02And we talked about it.
24:03I said, what the hell game is he watching?
24:05They just got run on by the dolphins.
24:07The dolphins ran seven straight times to score against you with Snoop
24:10Huntley, a quarterback, and they, they played crappy on special teams.
24:14They played crappy on defense.
24:16Like he's not, he, he, he doesn't know what's going on with his team.
24:19And now three weeks later, now he's calling him soft.
24:22No, if you knew what was going on, if you weren't just, I don't know.
24:25I mean, does he watch the film?
24:27If, if you cared about your team, you would have said enough's enough right there.
24:31Like he would have been real about his game.
24:34Like he would have been real about his team and gotten a fix.
24:37Then he has no solutions.
24:38That's why they're a mess.
24:40Is it time for him to take more responsibility on the defensive side and
24:43give, and give McAdoo and AVP and say, that's your offense.
24:47I'm not going to be more involved defensively.
24:49Yep.
24:50I, yeah, I mean, I, he needs to be involved in everything, but.
24:55Uh, you know, if he wants to get, if he wants to get fired, he'll
24:57keep doing the CEO report, you know?
25:00And, and I do not think that he is assured of year two.
25:03It better get better by the end of the season or he could be in trouble.
25:07So that means he, if he needs to step in, he needs to step in.
25:12That's interesting because I've gone off the thought of Robert
25:15Kraft will never get rid of him after one year because he has way too much.
25:19Uh, to prove and the whole Belichick stuff, but that's interesting.
25:22All right, before we get to Greg, uh, who stood up, who stood out and who didn't,
25:26uh, check out BSJ 50 bucks for the year, but Dargi already, they do a great job
25:29with the Patriots coverage, of course, Corrales gets it cranking
25:32with the Celtics tonight.
25:33You also want to download the prize picks app today.
25:35Use code CLNS, get 50 bucks instantly when you play five and then take the guesswork
25:39out of buying tickets with game time.
25:41Again, that code is C L N S for 20 bucks off your first purchase.
25:45Who was good?
25:45Who wasn't Greg?
25:48Uh, let's go three up on offense.
25:52Uh, Hunter Henry.
25:53That is great.
25:54Drake may number two, DeMontre Jacobs PFF killed him with four pressures.
25:59I didn't have much for him in this game.
26:01I also thought Ben Brown was good.
26:03I'm not good on offense.
26:05I mean, the whole defense you can put in there.
26:07I mean, the, the linebackers to Vi, um, Christian Ellis, Devon, God,
26:14chow Marte map, who they stunk city.
26:17So, and Michael Jordan were horrible.
26:19And of course you have Jalen Polk.
26:23It's like groundhogs day.
26:24This, this podcast this season so far, hopefully it all changes.
26:27Uh, Greg and I will be back later in the week.
26:29He's going to run the Felger mass until next time.
26:31Be well.
