Taylor Kyles and Mike Kadlick bring you a live preview of the Patriots vs. Titans game. Then, they'll answer your questions in a mailbag segment. Will it be Drake or Jacoby on Sunday? How would it change the gameplan? Can the defense hold strong against an underwhelming Titans offense?

00:00It didn't even do the intro.
00:07What is going on?
00:08This is just crazy.
00:09But hi, everyone.
00:10Welcome back into another episode of the Patriots Daily Podcast here on the CLNS Media Network.
00:16We are powered by PrizePix and GameTime.
00:18We're laughing because we messed up our intro.
00:20We were trying to make funny faces.
00:21We were being stupid.
00:22But it's time to preview Patriots versus Titans coming up on Sunday.
00:28A game between the 1-6 Titans and the 2-6 New England Patriots.
00:32It's two first-year head coaches.
00:34It's two teams with question marks at quarterback right now.
00:36Obviously, we know Drake May has been limited at practice with a concussion.
00:39Jacoby Breset finished last week's game.
00:42And on the Tennessee side, Mason Rudolph has started the last couple games for the Titans
00:47with Will Levis dealing with an injury as well as sort of being basically benched because
00:51of his injury.
00:52I feel like they've kind of massaged that into a benching slash injury thing for Levis.
00:57But he was limited yesterday at practice.
00:59I believe he was limited today as well.
01:01So let's get into the matchup, Taylor.
01:02But before we do, let's quickly talk about this injury report from the Patriots today
01:07because three DNPs from yesterday, Christian Ellis, Vidarian Lowe, and Jaquaylon Roy, all
01:13come back to practice in limited fashion today.
01:15Marte Mappu, Jalen Polk, full participants, Mappu with the neck, Polk with a concussion.
01:21And then Tyquan Thornton added to Thursday's injury report with an ankle injury.
01:25So 30,000 foot view quickly before we get into the matchup, your thoughts on this injury
01:30report and what it could potentially mean for Sunday.
01:32I mean, it's good.
01:33And so Christian Ellis, Jaquaylon Roy, those are two guys I've been talking about.
01:37They've been pretty, pretty instrumental, honestly, over the past couple weeks on defense,
01:41two guys that are being asked to step up and they've done a pretty good job.
01:45So the fact that they didn't participate yesterday, that was I think a full contact practice made
01:50that something to do with it.
01:51But good that they're on the up and up.
01:53But Darian Lowe coming back to practice is huge.
01:55Obviously, you want him out there because Harold Landry hasn't been a super productive
02:00season for him, but he's still the kind of, well, Harold Landry and Arden Key, actually.
02:03Arden Key is the one who's been more productive as the pass rusher, is on the edge for those
02:07guys.
02:08But they're both solid players.
02:09So you'd like to have Darian to maintain that continuity.
02:12And then Tyquan Thornton was an interesting one.
02:15He was added with an ankle.
02:16I don't really think much of that, to be honest.
02:18He was a very limited, he had a very limited role last week, doesn't really move the needle.
02:22But Marte Mapu and Jalen Polk being fully healthy could be big.
02:24Marte Mapu, obviously, has been really a full starter since he started taking the field.
02:29And then Jalen Polk, we have no idea if he's going to play or not or what his role is going
02:33to be.
02:34I know.
02:35Because Rod Mayo kind of hinted that he could potentially have a reduced role.
02:38Hopefully, it's a different role.
02:39No more of him at X now that we've had Keishon Booty in that role and he's been your best
02:43guy.
02:44But yeah, those are pretty much it.
02:45I think the defensive injuries are the ones that I'm really going to be keeping an eye
02:48on because Roy and Ellis have been instrumental, especially on the early down defense.
02:53And then, you know, Jalen Polk, curious, I'm really, I know, good to see what they actually
02:59do with him and where he lines up and where he plays.
03:01That makes the receiver room that much interesting, much more interesting now that Thornton's
03:05on the report and Jalen Polk is full and kind of coming back.
03:08So if he doesn't play, he's going to essentially be a healthy scratch this weekend.
03:12Something like you said that they had hinted at where they could kind of give him a mental
03:15reset.
03:16Obviously, he kind of got that last week being out, but he was also dealing with an injury,
03:20dealing with the concussion.
03:21So with KJ Osborne, Taekwon Thornton also on the trade block right now, that can make
03:26for some interesting, interesting lineup decisions for sure.
03:29Javon Baker as well plays last week, doesn't take any rubs on offense, but obviously gets
03:33involved in the kick return game and it sounds like they want to slowly get him involved
03:37in the offense.
03:38But let's start with the Titans offense first and foremost here today, Taylor, as we preview
03:43this matchup coming up on Sunday and it's going to start, we're going to start with
03:48hold on.
03:49I'm looking at our comments.
03:50We also have yeah, we'll do.
03:53So we're looking in the chat.
03:54There will be a small Q and a at the end.
03:56We'll try and get to as many as possible.
03:58We're going to be kind of crunched for time here as we continue previewing this thing.
04:01But if you have any questions, throw them in.
04:02We'll try and get to as many as many as possible after we wrap up today's show.
04:06But first we're going to preview Patriots versus Titans.
04:08Like I said, two and six pats heading to Nashville and we're going to start with the run game
04:13and it's going to start for the Patriots with shutting down Tony Pollard.
04:16Tony Pollard comes over from Dallas this past offseason and has had a solid season for this
04:23Tennessee team yards after contact per rush for the season.
04:26He's second only to tank Bigsby who kicks the Patriots, but last or a few weeks ago
04:31rather over in London.
04:33So Patriots are going to have a tough challenge again.
04:35They obviously have gotten gashed the last couple of weeks in the run game, got a little
04:39bit better last week against the jets, but still wasn't perfect.
04:41So Taylor, how did the Patriots stop Tony Pollard and the Tennessee rushing attack?
04:45Yeah, I mean, Tennessee, you're going to see the numbers and a lot of his yards have come
04:50after contact.
04:51No running back actually this season has had a higher rate of his yards come after contact,
04:55but the Titans have also been opening up some holes for him.
04:57It hasn't been quite like the Patriots will get to their run game a little later where
05:00they've had a big problem actually opening up holes on a consistent basis.
05:04The Titans have done that.
05:05Then Tony Pollard has also been putting it on his back as well.
05:10in the league when it comes to creating his own yardage.
05:13So that's going to be a really big challenge for the Patriots who were better against the
05:16run last week.
05:17And when you look at the numbers, this was their best game in several weeks.
05:22If you look at yards, rushing yards allowed yards per rush and those two stats, they were
05:27the best since they were since week two average depth of tackle.
05:31That may seem like a weird funky stat.
05:32Like who cares?
05:33What does it mean?
05:34Right?
05:35Basically it is still significant because this is essentially saying how many yards
05:38are you giving running backs before you even contact them?
05:40Now, you want that number to be under four yards, obviously, because you like to hold
05:44running backs to less than four yards to carry.
05:47So still a work in progress, but in terms of down to down consistency, I really like
05:52what they did last week relative to what it's been in weeks past.
05:55The biggest thing that stood out to me was the explosive runs.
05:58They only allowed two, which was the fewest that they've given up since the Seattle game.
06:03Every other week, pretty much they've given up at least, I believe it was four.
06:07A lot of the time it's been six.
06:08So that was a huge improvement.
06:10Really they just need to work on not giving up the four and five yard gains.
06:14You know, the gains where, yeah, as a run defense, they're not going to gouge you necessarily,
06:18but a team like the Titans where they know they can't really lean on their quarterback,
06:22they're going to run the rock.
06:23Now, Patriots also, the missed tackles have improved and one thing also, they've done
06:28a much better job actually swarming to the football.
06:31So when they, that was a big thing last year where you would see like guys like Jabril
06:34peppers.
06:35They had, you know, a pretty decently high number of missed tackles, but it didn't matter
06:39because there were so many people around that even if they missed, there was someone else
06:43to pick it up.
06:44Now I mentioned the two explosive runs.
06:47Those are going to be the plays that I want to highlight because those runs were the same
06:51concept actually.
06:53The Titans, or I'm sorry, the Jets got them on the exact same play two times throughout
06:57the game.
06:58And it's actually a concept I think we could see also from the Titans.
07:01Now, like the Jets, the Titans are more of an under center outside zone team.
07:06So it's pretty straightforward.
07:07But even the Jets last week did a lot of shotgun outside zone, outside zone toss.
07:12They're basically the same idea, but toss is obviously aiming to actually get outside
07:17of the tackles.
07:18Whereas outside zone, a lot of the time you're really just trying to set up an outside run
07:21to cut back inside when the defense over pursues, obviously you're going to hit outside.
07:25We're going to see that for the Patriots run game first, let's look at the Patriots and
07:30the run that exactly gave them trouble.
07:32Now this crack toss, the Jets used twice in the game.
07:35Now it was from a unique look, right?
07:37So you got the bunch up here, single receiver, but then you've got Brees Hall on the outside.
07:43Very unconventional look where the defense, when they see this, they're not really expecting
07:47run because obviously Aaron Rodgers is in the backfield.
07:49What are you going to like pull some kind of QB toss with Aaron Rodgers?
07:52That ain't going to happen.
07:53What the Jets are going to do is actually have Brees Hall shift into the backfield and
07:58run the play before he gets set.
08:00So we're going to see that right here.
08:01He starts coming into the backfield and what we're going to get is a crack toss with two
08:05of those crack blocks.
08:06So you're going to get two from the receivers, one on Jonathan Jones, one on Dietrich Weiss.
08:11Then you're going to have Tyler Conklin and Tyron Smith as your pullers with once again,
08:16Brees Hall going outside on the toss to hit outside the tackles.
08:20Now gets the toss.
08:22Now as you're going to see Dietrich Weiss, Jonathan Jones have been pinned.
08:25They are accounted for.
08:26Now Brees Hall basically is just following his blockers as he gets to the outside.
08:31You're going to see Christian Ellis unfortunately goes underneath the block.
08:35Now Christian's been very good.
08:36I think this is a play where the coaches are going to say, Hey man, next time you want
08:39to go over this because on a crack toss, very rarely is a back going to cut back on this.
08:44They're really trying to get to the outside.
08:46So instead of getting, as soon as he goes under, this happened earlier in the game with
08:50Marco Wilson.
08:51When you go under, you take yourself out of the play.
08:53If you go over, you at least force the running back to cut back into the pursuit or all these
08:58guys are.
08:59But once again, he goes under.
09:00So Brees Hall has room.
09:02You also have the block from Tyler Conklin on Christian Gonzalez.
09:05That's a mismatch.
09:06Brees Hall basically just does his thing, gets outside for a first down and explosive
09:11gain.
09:12That was the second time that the jets ran that the first time the Patriots weren't first
09:16time the Patriots were in zone second time they were in man, which is why you saw Christian
09:19Ellis as the guy who was motioning back inside.
09:22Now, not the same look, but we're going to see the same concept from the Titans.
09:26And like you talked about with the Jets last week, where there was a certain play that
09:30the the Jaguars ran that RPO inside zone with the bubble screen that created some conflict
09:35on the backside.
09:37The Jets use that as well.
09:38They ended up bumbling the snap, so it didn't work.
09:41But it's a copycat league.
09:42If a team is studying you and sees, hey, they got gashed by this.
09:45You're going to see it again the next week.
09:46So that team can see whether or not you have the proper adjustments to the Titans going
09:50to run their own crack.
09:52A little different because instead of a bunch where it's three receivers here, you're only
09:55going to have two.
09:56So you're going to have a couple of these crack blocks.
09:59And instead of both are multiple pullers, you're only going to have the center getting
10:03to the second level.
10:04That's how you're going to take care of the linebacker.
10:06And Tony Pollard is going to be going out on the toss.
10:09Now once again from shotgun, just like last time, you get the pin here, you get the second
10:14level block here.
10:15This is really going to be key.
10:16They're not even throwing any more blocks, but that's just enough for Tony Pollard to
10:19use his speed.
10:22Outside the tackles.
10:23You're not really seeing his tackle breaking ability there necessarily.
10:25But we talk about once again, outside zone.
10:27It's very straightforward with run defense.
10:30We want to make it complicated.
10:31It's not.
10:32It's literally creating extension, putting yourself in position to get off the block,
10:36getting off that block, and then making the tackle as well as obviously making your run
10:39key.
10:40So the under center outside zone scheme is where the Patriots really need to hone in.
10:44Make sure that not only one person is tackling Tony Pollard, but you swarm to the football
10:49so that you have multiple bodies on him to reduce the number of yards after contact.
10:52But also watch out for that toss play because once again, the Patriots couldn't defend it
10:56against the Jets.
10:57It would make a lot of sense for the Titans to use a different version of it this weekend.
11:01Absolutely.
11:02And I'm just looking at the injury reports again from this other week to kind of tie
11:07it into.
11:08Yeah.
11:09Wow.
11:10Okay.
11:11So tying it into the running back room here with the Titans.
11:14So Tony Pollard is back.
11:16Not back.
11:17He's not playing like he has been.
11:19I know they have a couple other backups that could potentially come in and play as well,
11:38but it really is going to look like it's Pollard's game for the Titans backfield.
11:42But again, like you said, they really need to continue to hone in on that.
11:45Stop the run.
11:46Like I said, it was that play last week where it was the bubble screen off of the RPO zone
11:54read right there.
11:55And it was the perfect.
11:57We basically went through it in our game preview before Taylor called it out.
12:02It worked out for the Jets, just like it did for the Jaguars.
12:04And so Titans probably do the same thing in the film room, figure out what the Patriots
12:08weaknesses are.
12:09They just need to continue to hone in on those backs and go forward there.
12:12So we're going to continue our game preview in a second, but first, a quick word from
12:17our friends over at Price Picks, because Price Picks is, if my computer will load, the best

13:03We will have a Thursday night football play tonight on my Twitter.
13:07I'm going with Garrett Wilson to have more than 63 and a half receiving yards, and I'm
13:11also going with Tank Dell to have more than four and a half receptions.
13:15Tank Dell is going to be the number one in Houston tonight because Stefan Diggs and Nico
13:19Collins are both out.
13:20So I think Cedar Strauss is going to try and bever him, and although the Jets can't figure
13:23out anything right now, they have figured out that Garrett Wilson is a dog.
13:27So I'm taking him to have more than 63 and a half receiving yards.
13:31Join me if you want.

13:38That's code CLNS to get $50 instantly after you play your first $5 lineup.
13:44Price Picks run your game.
13:46All right, Taylor, let's continue on here.
13:50Patriots versus Titans coming up on Sunday, and we talked about already stopping the run
13:54game, but now flipping it to the Patriots offense.
13:57They need to contain Jeffrey Simmons, someone who was highly mentioned by Gerard Mayo this
14:03week and someone who Jacoby Brissette called one of, I think, the top 10 or 15 players
14:07or defensive linemen in the entire game.
14:09So he's someone who they are going to have a red circle all around this weekend, Jeffrey
14:15Simmons, as well as the rest of the Titans pass rush.
14:17But specifically, Jeffrey Simmons, as you'll highlight in a second, has the highest PFF
14:22pass rush grade among all interior defensive linemen since week six, excuse me.
14:27That is on a minimum of 50 pass rushes.
14:29So Taylor, take us through how the Patriots stop this Titans pass rush.
14:33I put one too many spaces after a week, and it's going to bug the shit out of me.
14:38Oh my God, I'll be better next week, everyone.
14:40I promise.
14:41But yes, Jeffrey Simmons.
14:42So he actually missed week five.
14:44That's one of the reasons we started week six.
14:46But the dude's been a monster this season.
14:48He's been a monster since he got in the league.
14:50He's one of the rarest athletes on the planet.
14:52He's big.
14:53He's fast.
14:54He's physical.
14:55And he is a scary MF or just attitude wise, like truly one of those dudes you simply don't
15:00want to mess with.
15:01And then when you even look at PFF pass rush win rate, the only person who's been better
15:05since week six is Cameron Hayward, who's having a monster season in his own right, both versus
15:10run and pass.
15:12Jeffrey Simmons is a well-rounded player.
15:13Also, it's not just a pass rush.
15:15He's also been a great run defender, but we'll talk about that later.
15:18But again, as you can see, he's been a highly productive player and that is significant
15:22because the Patriots have been much better in their pass protection.
15:27Now, before Ben Brown entered the lineup, that was what happened in week six.
15:32They were the worst pass blocking unit by every metric, according to PFF.
15:37Other than pass block grade, I think there they were still like bottom five.
15:41It wasn't good.
15:42Might've been bottom three.
15:43A lot of struggles there.
15:44Obviously, it wasn't just because of David Andrews.
15:46There were so many different permutations they added onto the offensive line.
15:50But when Andrews went down, center became one of the most porous spots on the offensive
15:55line.
15:56Ben Brown's been better.
15:57But at the same time, the Patriots guards, other than Mike and Wenu, are simply not built
16:02to win one-on-one against elite pass rushers.
16:04That's just what it is.
16:05Ben Brown gave up some pressures against Quentin Williams last week.
16:09Michael Jordan has struggled at times when he's one-on-one against these really good
16:12pass rushers.
16:13And Jeffrey Simmons, specifically, is the kind of guy who will take you and put you
16:17in the quarterback's lap if you are by yourself.
16:20So you want to make sure you give him extra attention.
16:22And if you don't give him extra attention, you've got to make sure that you're getting
16:26the ball out quickly.
16:27And he's not the only person you've got to deal with.
16:29Once again, the Patriots have been much better in their pass protection.
16:32But even last week, you saw it's not perfect.
16:35And we're going to show one of those examples because with the Titans, not only do they
16:39have Jeffrey Simmons, they also have guys on the edge like Harold Landry and Arden Key.
16:44Harold Landry hasn't been great this season, at least in terms of production.
16:47But Arden Key has been their best edge rusher.
16:50And we're going to show you what kind of problems they can present.
16:53So here, the biggest issue isn't even just one-on-one.
16:56We know, yes, Jeffrey Simmons is very good if he's one-on-one.
16:59Like I said, he's going to walk you back into the quarterback.
17:02But the line game, specifically, are what I want to focus on.
17:05Because in some obvious passing situations, they're going to test the Patriots' communication.
17:10We're going to see that here, the way that they actually deploy this.
17:13So the Lions have one of the best offensive lines in the entire NFL.
17:17That is their bread and butter.
17:18But it's also kind of like what Gerard Mayo said, where the Lions, they're known for showcasing
17:22their offensive linemen.
17:23They have extra linemen, they'll throw to their offensive linemen.
17:26The Patriots haven't done that yet.
17:27Damn, Skipper.
17:28Titan legend.
17:29Exactly.
17:30But they will put multiple guys out there, as we saw in the game-winning touchdown.
17:32They had eight, sorry, seven offensive linemen on the field.
17:36So that's not any crazy package here.
17:39But you're going to get a line game from the Patriots, a T-E stunt.
17:42Basically what that means, Jeffrey Simmons on the inside, Arden Key on the outside.
17:47T-E just means the order of who's going to attack.
17:49So T is the tackle.
17:51The tackle is going to penetrate, and the E, Arden Key, the end, is going to loop inside
17:56to create this pressure.
17:58Let's break this down.
18:00Now Jeffrey Simmons, you see the power, instantly wins, gets under his blocker as well.
18:06Arden Key capitalizes on the gap created because this is a man-blocking scheme.
18:10So these guys are singled up on their men.
18:13If they have good chemistry, maybe they'll pass it off.
18:15But with this side essentially zoned out, you're not getting any help in the middle.
18:19Arden Key capitalizes on that because Jeffrey Simmons won his rush, and the two guys meet
18:24at the quarterback sack.
18:26Not only a sack, but also a strip.
18:27I don't think they were able to recover, though, unfortunately.
18:30The Patriots actually almost gave up a sack on a very similar concept, but Drake May,
18:34who we're hoping obviously is going to be the starter on Sunday, was able to get the
18:38ball out of his hands before they managed to get home.
18:40So this time, they actually flipped it, right?
18:43So you're going to have the edge defender, Will McDonald, on the inside.
18:46On the outside, you've got Quentin Williams as a defensive end.
18:49When you see this alignment, you know what twist is coming.
18:51I was just going to say, look at all the space in the middle of the field.
18:54There's nobody lined up on any of the three interior linemen.
18:57Exactly.
18:58Especially when you're looking here, it's like, all right, you've got a linebacker.
19:00There may be a twist both sides, but I'm really worried about your two best pass rushers being
19:04on the same side of the line of scrimmage.
19:06Once again, TE twist, you're going to have, technically he's a tackle, but we really know
19:10he's an edge rusher.
19:11Will McDonald penetrating on the inside, Quentin Williams looping from the outside.
19:16Now Michael Jordan, unfortunately, is not going to win this rep necessarily.
19:20He tries his best, but Will McDonald is able to create separation, get underneath.
19:25And then Vardarian Lowe, once again, they're a man blocking scheme.
19:28It's a tough position for him to be in because they end up kind of at different levels.
19:32He tries to chase Quentin Williams.
19:34If Trey doesn't let this out, he's going to get crushed, right?
19:37Yeah.
19:38Quentin Williams is burying him, but he does get it out.
19:40Unfortunately, this is the play that Kayshaun Booty dropped.
19:42So once again, the individual matchups are going to be huge.
19:46You can't let Quentin Williams just take over the game and attack your interior offensive
19:50linemen.
19:51It's also very important that communication is on point.
19:55And not only does the quarterback understand, hey, this is a really tough defensive line.
19:59Like even Alex Van Pelt mentioned earlier today, both of the sacks that the Patriots
20:03took last week, they happened on quick losses, but the quarterbacks had options to get the
20:07ball out.
20:08That's one area where Drake may struggle.
20:09We talked about the footwork's been inconsistent, the ball placement's been inconsistent, but
20:13almost every sack he's taken has been a play where he probably could have gotten it out
20:17sooner.
20:18So if he's under center, you got to make sure you don't make it easy on these guys.
20:21Definitely.
20:22And I like that you mentioned the communication aspect of that too, Taylor, because they've
20:25gotten so much better the last three weeks.
20:27Yes, because Ben Brown has been in there, but also because they've had almost the same
20:31offensive line.
20:32Now they had to switch it up in week or whatever week it was over in London because Vardarian
20:38wasn't able to go at left tackle.
20:40But this lineup of Lowe, Michael Jordan, Ben Brown, Mike Onwenu, and Demantre Jacobs on
20:46the right side.
20:48So that's what we're looking at again this week, likely with Lowe back at practice.
20:51And Vardarian Lowe said it today, that they've gotten a lot better in that regard and that
20:56at one point this was sort of a, and I'm sort of paraphrasing here, but that offensive line
21:01has been kind of the punching bag for the Patriots.
21:03Now all of a sudden they're showing what they're worth and what they're made of.
21:06And that consistency, that communication is going to be huge, especially against a front
21:11with a ton of dudes, especially Jeffrey Simmons, Arden Key, Harold Landry, all those guys,
21:15they can wreak havoc.
21:17But again, they've, uh, they've made it work the last three weeks.
21:19So we'll see if they continue to do that on Sunday against Tennessee.
21:23We're going to wrap this thing up with the Patriots run game.
21:26But before we do a quick word from our friends at game time, head over to game time today
21:32and you can get in to Nissan stadium in Nashville for as little as $45.
21:37So if like, if you're like Taylor and you're headed to Tennessee this weekend, but don't
21:42have tickets yet to the game, head over to the game time app and buy them there.
21:47They have the game time picks feature.
21:49It filters out the fluff and shows you only incredible deals on great seats.
21:53So you don't have to waste time searching through thousands of tickets.
21:56They also have super deals.
21:57They have great deals.
21:58They have amazing deals.
21:59And that's just not me saying that that's what they are.
22:01That's literally what they're called on the app.
22:04You can also see your seat view, uh, on the app, which not a lot of the other apps do.
22:10So you can see exactly what the feel is going to look like in front of you.
22:14That's all on the game time app.
22:16So make sure you head over there today.
22:18Take the guesswork out of buying tickets with game time picks, download the game time app
22:23today, create an account and use code CLNS for $20 off your first purchase terms apply
22:29again, create an account and redeem code CLNS for $20 off download game time today.
22:34What time is it?
22:35Taylor game time.
22:36It is game time here on Pat's daily.
22:39And the other time that, what are you laughing at?
22:42Cause we were doing, you're like, they have great deals.
22:44I literally, they have great deals.
22:46They have amazing deals.
22:47They have deals.
22:48No one's ever heard of it.
22:49The best city was ever seen.
22:50It definitely was like, Oh my God, it does sound like a, like him, a big, a big trade
22:57deadline Tuesday coming up for him next week.
23:00That's all.
23:01That's all we're worried about next Tuesday is, is that trade in the NFL for sure.
23:05But let's wrap up.
23:06Yes, exactly.
23:07Yeah.
23:08Get out, get out and watch the trade deadline.
23:11Uh, anyway, I paid attention to the trade.
23:16Yeah.
23:17I watched the deadline, uh, 4.00 PM on Tuesday.
23:21And then you can go out and do some other things after you check out the trade deadline.
23:24Anyway, let's finish this thing up here.
23:26Patriots got to get that run name going and they have to do it with Ramond Ray Stevenson,
23:31who came back last week, uh, actually he's played the last two weeks.
23:34Wasn't himself in Jacksonville.
23:36I'd say came back, had a better two touchdown game last week.
23:39Now the yards per carry Taylor wasn't great, but he graded out solidly pretty much everywhere
23:44else.
23:45So take us through what they have to do against this Titans run defense with Ramond Ray Stevenson
23:49in order to take some pressure off that quarterback position, especially if we don't know if Drake
23:54may is going to go.
23:55Yeah.
23:56So the big thing is that Ramond Ray looks like he's himself again, as you can see, he
23:59had the most missed tackles force per rush since the season opener yards after contact
24:04per rush for the third most that he's had all season.
24:06I believe he also had a really good performance against the dolphins.
24:08I think that was the only one that was close before that.
24:10I think it was like week two and conversion rate was very high.
24:13He had the two touchdowns the first time he had two touchdowns since 2022, I believe.
24:18Uh, so been quite a while, obviously the Patriots offense hasn't been very good, so I'm sure
24:22that doesn't really surprise anybody, but Ramond Ray's at least been good.
24:25So it's like, damn, I didn't know it had been that long.
24:27So Ramond Ray looks like he's back to himself was dealing with the foot injury.
24:31Also had some off the field stuff.
24:33Um, and Gerard Mayo gave him credit for saying, you know, the adversity that, or I'm sorry,
24:37the resilience he's shown not only getting over the fumble problem he had, but also again,
24:41the off field stuff and being able to lock in and produce well, but the offensive line
24:44hasn't been great.
24:45Now the yards per rush, the reason it wasn't very good is because Ramond Ray was having
24:50to deal with backfield pressure constantly.
24:52He had the second highest stuff, a rush rate of the entire season and his yards after contact
24:57rate was 123%.
25:01We thought it was bad against the bangles and everyone made that a storyline.
25:04And we came on here and said, it's not really just that.
25:07It's also because he was getting hit because he was going up against cornerbacks where
25:10they were actually designing these one-on-one situations against the jets.
25:14It was much more inconsistent.
25:16There were some openings that we're going to show that, but we need them to be once
25:19again, more consistent in that area.
25:21Make some holes for Mondrey Stevenson to use his tackle breaking ability at the second
25:25level where those, instead of just having a decent run, you can actually have some explosive
25:29runs.
25:30Mondrey Stevenson had zero explosive carries against the jets.
25:33I believe that was the only game of the season that that's happened, that he's played in
25:36not going to have an easy task either.
25:38Actually, can you look up if Amani hooker participated in practice because yes, I can
25:42have this set, but literally the injury report dropped right before the show.
25:46So I didn't really have a reference, but the Titans did not participate once again on Thursday.
25:52That's huge because as you can see, no safety has more tackles against the Ron tackles for
25:55loss or no gain against the run.
25:57And they have a bunch of dudes on this Titans defense.
25:59Jeffrey Simmons, like I mentioned, very good run defender, second among interior defensive
26:03linemen of this season in terms of tackles for loss, no game, which is even more incredible
26:08considering he missed a game.
26:09Ernest Jones, the linebacker is top 10 among linebackers and Harold Landry is top 10 amongst
26:14edge guys.
26:15You think of Harold Landry is more of just a pass rush specialist.
26:18Nope.
26:19He could also stop the run.
26:20And I think that's actually where he's been most impactful.
26:22So the Patriots, the biggest thing for them is understanding how to pass things off, right?
26:27Again, it's the chemistry and it's hard when you're rotating all the time and you got young
26:31guys in who are being asked to step up, but at the end of the day, week to week, you want
26:35to see some improvement in the run game.
26:36It's not going to be easy, but Hey, if you have Jacoby, we're set at quarterback.
26:40That's going to be absolutely crucial that you run the ball.
26:43If you can't, you're putting him in a very difficult position.
26:45And even if it's Drake may, I think, you know, as stout as this Titans defense is both against
26:50the run and the past, you at least want to put your quarterbacks in positions where they
26:54don't have to do everything themselves, because it's just, it's not an ideal situation.
26:58Especially we know Drake may is very talented, but you don't want them having to drop back
27:02again, like 35, 40 times a game.
27:04That's very rarely a recipe for success in the NFL.
27:08We're going to look at the runs that might work for new England.
27:10Now outside zone, everybody keeps saying for some reason, the Patriots can't run outside
27:14zone.
27:16For a while.
27:17It's been the only thing that they've actually run with any level of consistency, even their
27:19duo, which has been their bread and butter for a long time, hasn't been nearly as consistently
27:23effective as their outside zone scheme, which almost always hits behind Mike and when to
27:29surprise surprise.
27:30So on this place specifically, we're going to get a Lasita Smith as a fullback.
27:35That was a really fun way to start the game.
27:37He got a 12 personnel set with a one tight end one run or 11.
27:40I'm sorry with one tight end one running back.
27:42And then Lasita Smith is your, you know, HVAC type, whatever.
27:46Now Kendrick Bourne shifts into the formation.
27:49We're actually going to have outside zone, but with a trap influence.
27:52So Lasita Smith is going to trap on, I believe this is Quinning Williams.
27:56That's going to allow Ben Brown to get to the second level quickly.
27:59And then all these strong side blocks are going to do a really good job executing their
28:03assignment.
28:04You're going to have Ramond Ray Stevenson running to the right.
28:07Now gets the carry.
28:08You see great blocks, strong side.
28:11You've got especially Mike and when he was blocker, he kind of gets to block initially
28:15can't really get his hat outside, which is what you want to do.
28:19But you know, the defensive lineman tries to shed the block and does him a little favor.
28:22Nice combo here from Hunter Henry to Monterey Jacobs to Monterey Jacobs begins climbing
28:26to the second level.
28:28Actually doesn't even need to block anybody much on this play.
28:31Then Kendrick Bourne does a solid job creating contact on his man.
28:34But Kendrick Bourne's assignment does manage to get off the block just enough to make contact
28:38with Ramond Ray.
28:39But with his contact balance really doesn't do much.
28:42He breaks it and then just scurries ahead for some extra yards.
28:45Now not a huge gain.
28:46Also someone I want to highlight on this play.
28:48Let's look at the Darien Lowe right from the start of this play.
28:52Gets to the second level against Sherwood, sticks to him.
28:56He's not getting off that block, stays on him, stays on him.
28:59This is the first play of the game.
29:00Little bully ball gets his face.
29:01Set that tone Darien.
29:04You know, I love me some Darien Lowe.
29:06That play made me very happy.
29:07And then the Lions last week actually ran a very similar type of outside zone.
29:12This is from under center instead of the pistol like the Patriots did, but what you're going
29:16to see.
29:17And instead of a fullback, you're going to have a tight end coming in motion.
29:20He's going to create the trap play on the interior, or I guess technically this is Wham
29:24actually because technically, so when it's Wham, it's a skill position player.
29:28So you know, for some reason the Titans tried to have Calvin Ridley do something like this.
29:33Oh nice.
29:34Sorry.
29:35Blown up.
29:36Go on my Twitter if you want to see that.
29:38But if it's Wham, it's because it's a skill player.
29:40If it's trap, typically it's an offensive lineman.
29:43That's the way you really think about it.
29:44But so he's going to trap down and then once again, you're going to get outside zone to
29:48the right side.
29:49Now Jameer Gibbs going to take this hand off.
29:52Now the defensive tackle doesn't really do himself a ton of favors here.
29:55Makes it a lot easier for the tight end, but you got that block and then then Penesol does
30:00a great job on the right side, creating a bit of a seal.
30:03Second level blocker does just enough to get Jameer Gibbs started on the run.
30:08Solid game for him.
30:09Now once again, the Titans are not going to give you a whole lot of explosive games like
30:12this.
30:13Maybe the second week in a row where the Patriots don't rip off a 10 yard run.
30:16But the biggest thing is they need to make sure they're consistent because if they can
30:19get like what Rod Mayo told us, three yards for some people doesn't look great for us.
30:24If it's a physical three yard run, we'll take it.
30:26If it's one of those body blows where it's like, yeah, if you get like 10 three yard
30:29runs in a game in the right situation, that's demoralizing for a defense because it at least
30:34keeps the offense on schedule.
30:36Patriots can do that.
30:37Going to take a ton of pressure off the passing game.
30:40We didn't really preview the passing game because we don't know which quarterback it's
30:42going to be, but I think we all know that Jacoby Brissett just doesn't give you quite
30:47as much as Drake May, both in terms of downfield passing ability and rushing ability.
30:51So the run game I think is going to be crucial if New England is going to get a win on the
30:54road.
30:55All right.
30:56So Titans, the keys to the game for the Patriots stopping Tony Pollard, containing Jeffrey
31:00Simmons and the pass rush and also getting that run game going with Raimondo Stevenson.
31:05Those are the keys.
31:06I know you do it, Taylor.
31:07I know you think that that's how they win the football game, but do they do it?
31:10And do they win the football game?
31:11What's your prediction for Sunday's game in Tennessee?
31:14I'm going to slight cop out.
31:16I'm going to go quarterback.
31:17Who do you think is going to play quarterback?
31:20Who do you think?
31:21All right.
31:22I'll do that.
31:23I think it's going to be Drake.
31:24So do I.
31:25Because he was leading off in practice today.
31:26I think it would have to be a setback for him not to play at this point.
31:28If Drake plays, I think they win.
31:29I think if the defense does their jobs like Calvin Ridley is the only person you really
31:33need to worry about in the passing game.
31:35The run game for the Titans is solid, but they're not very explosive.
31:38So if you can, yeah, force them to run the ball, but get the stops when you need to and
31:42give your offense the opportunities to get some good field position and maybe turn that
31:46into points.
31:47That's how they win the game, which Kobe said.
31:49Unfortunately, I just don't know how they move the ball consistently.
31:51Again, I said they need to run the ball.
31:53I'm not confident they're going to necessarily because this is such a tough Titans front.
31:58And then I think Drake may is going to be the difference because he gives you that explosiveness
32:02that can get you to flip field position, get some points on the board.
32:05If you get out to an early lead, I think you're putting the Titans in a really, really tough
32:09spot.
32:10So that's going to be absolutely key.
32:11But if it's Drake may, I think they win.
32:13I'll give him like a 10 point win in that one.
32:16I'll get a little gutsy here.
32:17If it's to Kobe Brissett, I'm seeing more like, you know, under three point loss.
32:21It's going to be close, but I think that Tennessee is able to pull it out just because they have
32:24so much talent.
32:25All right.
32:26I guess I'll allow the caveat because it is kind of up in the air right now.
32:30So I'll give it to you.
32:31But I believe Drake may is going to play in this game.
32:34Feels like he is moving through that concussion protocol again.
32:37Today was a limited participant, but he was out there early.
32:40So we are assuming that he was out there for the entire time, meaning that that is stage
32:44four of protocol.
32:45Tomorrow will be stage five.
32:46If he clears it, he leaves for Nashville on Saturday and plays on Sunday.
32:49So that's what I think is going to happen.
32:51So if it's Drake may, I'm going 23 to 14 Patriots look that the Lions put up 52 last week in
32:58this Tennessee defense.
32:59I know they were able to take advantage of field position battle and things of that nature.
33:02But I do think to the Patriots were able to do that a little bit against the Jets last
33:06week where they played complimentary football.
33:08They had a couple of nice couple of nice stops.
33:10Obviously the punt return or not the punt return touchdown, but the long punt return
33:14for Marcus Jones that they scored off of.
33:15So I'm thinking the Patriots touchdown Marcus.
33:18Yeah, I really should have scored out my boys.
33:20Yeah, but but no, look, the Patriots played pretty well last week.
33:24They've played solid on offense against or with Drake may under center rather.
33:29And I just think the Tennessee team is not that good offensively.
33:32It's a question if it's going to be Mason Rudolph or will love us either way.
33:35I think the Patriots defense can stop whoever is under center for Tennessee.
33:40So that is it for our preview.
33:42Let's go through the chat.
33:43We'll take a few questions here.
33:44We don't have a ton of time, but we will get to as many as we can really quick.
33:48And let's start with this one, Taylor.
33:52Let's talk about tanking.
33:54Do we really want them to win these games, Taylor?
33:56What do you make of the idea of losing games here and trying to make something happen for
34:01now?
34:02Again, we've talked about it.
34:03They're not going to actually tank.
34:04But what do you think of them winning versus losing and how it affects their draft position?
34:08So you have your quarterback, you tank for a quarterback because they're so hard to get.
34:13You have to give up the farm to get them in the Patriots or a team that has holes at several
34:17premium positions.
34:19So I don't think they're specific.
34:20Even if they're 15th, honestly, I don't really care.
34:2315th is still good enough to get a quality player.
34:26I think that's the point.
34:27If you get a top five pick, if you get the first pick, obviously that's huge because
34:31once again, you have your quarterback and you have the flexibility to say, hey, you
34:35want a quarterback?
34:36You want one?
34:37Yeah.
34:38Well, I'll dangle this pick and you're going to give me the motherlode.
34:39Yes.
34:40Obviously that's ideal.
34:41But the biggest thing for this season is not draft capital, it's culture.
34:45You need to win as many games as possible because one, you want your team to be inspired.
34:49If they lose out from here on, that's not good because at some point you figure guys
34:55are going to start, the effort's going to drop off.
34:57It's kind of like last season where you start to see which guys really are going to roll
35:00with you and put in the hard work to make sure that this is a respectable team and which
35:04guys are going to look out for themselves.
35:06The game like football, I'll be totally honest.
35:08It's so easy to call people out and be like Trent Brown.
35:11People wanted to be, you talk shit about Trent Brown, kind of giving up.
35:15But at the same time, it's like, bro, I'm on an expiring contract.
35:17I'm not going to be here next year.
35:19I'm putting my body on the line.
35:21I know you can say life, like not a lot of people have died on football fields, but like,
35:25you know, we've literally seen someone die on a football field.
35:28So it's not fair to necessarily say it's, oh, you know, that's not true.
35:32It's significant what these guys put out every Sunday.
35:34So I, I think that winning at least gets you that buy-in maybe, you know, you got guys
35:40who really are even not just bought in now, maybe want to stick around for the future.
35:44And then free agents, trade candidates are going to see, oh, this first year coach and
35:48this rookie quarterback were able to get, you know, five, six wins.
35:52That's not bad.
35:53I'm a great player.
35:54I can come over there and I can make Drake May better.
35:56I can make that defense better, get some, you know, quality sacks or whatever, and bring
35:59them some pass rush, whatever the skill set is.
36:02So wins are very, very important this season.
36:05They're not the only thing.
36:06And that's why they keep reiterating that we're building for the future, but you still
36:10do need to show signs of progress.
36:12So whether it's now, whether it's later in the season, if we're in mid season, so it's
36:15not like September where you're saying, all right, they're losing, not the worst thing
36:19in the world.
36:20They didn't have playoff aspirations, but you need to show growth.
36:22And that obviously comes with wins because it's going to be very hard to convince teams
36:25that you got better or free agents or whomever that you got better.
36:28If you lose 10 straight games or, you know, whatever's left, it's good.
36:31No, absolutely.
36:32I mean, again, it's, they, they shouldn't actively lose.
36:36No one should actively, you know, want this team to lose.
36:38And even as a fan, right?
36:39Like this, do we, do we really want them to win games is like, I guess the premise
36:43of the question I would think you want them to play well, and if it doesn't translate
36:47into a win, I think that's okay.
36:49Because in the end it does help your draft position and it can add to leverage down the
36:52line and things of that nature.
36:53But you want them to play well, if, if they win, it's an added bonus.
36:57And I think the culture part you mentioned is huge where, okay, you know, we're doing
37:02the right things and it's working like last week, right?
37:04They improved on, you know, several different areas and they actually saw one go through
37:07the hoop.
37:09They saw a W get notched in that column where, you know, when you're banging your head against
37:12the wall, trying different things, trying new things, and it doesn't add up and you
37:15don't get a victory, then you see the buyout and you see those guys kind of be like, well,
37:20what are we doing?
37:21We're just that bad.
37:22And then it kind of unravels and we get to where we almost were after that Jacksonville
37:26game.
37:27And so I think wins are important.
37:28They're not the most important thing.
37:29You still likely want a higher draft pick to continue rebuilding the scene, but that's
37:33kind of where I sit on there.
37:36All right.
37:37Are you drafting a tackle or wide receiver at the top of the draft?
37:41Depends who's there and what pick they have.
37:42I know everybody wants this to be like an easy kind of plugin thing, but like one, I
37:46haven't watched these guys or I'm not going to sit here and say that, but at the same
37:49time I think if a Darien low, and I don't know how people are going to feel about this.
37:54I don't think he needs to be an all pro.
37:55No, but like he's under contract for next season.
37:58He's playing good football for you this season.
38:01Like he's not even just replacement level.
38:02The guy's giving up a sack.
38:04Now he's missed time obviously.
38:05And there've been some close calls and all that, but he's been way better than anybody
38:08could have expected.
38:10That's why I'm saying, Hey, if you've got to take a tackle in the second round and he
38:13may be developed behind the Darien low, maybe play so well behind the scenes that he forces
38:17him out of a job.
38:18Like I think that's what you want.
38:19The one thing we undervalue is how important it is for players to have been in the system
38:22for a long time because you grow, but Darien's like 26 years old.
38:26He hasn't even reached a ceiling yet.
38:27So for me, wide receiver is the one position where it's like they have a glaring hole because
38:31they have a bunch of Zs, a bunch of slots.
38:34No one who I feel confident right now that can live at X, even if unless Jayvon is lights
38:38out and plays the way that I was hoping he would, when I was writing up, you know, the
38:42profile after he was drafted, you need some more help.
38:44And the team has shown that they tried to get these, you know, we're going to pay Brandon
38:48more than anybody else.
38:49So I think wide receiver is still the biggest one.
38:52I know people are going to say, Oh, but if you don't have a tackle, he's going to get
38:54hit.
38:55Darien low is not really getting his quarterback hit very often.
38:57And also what people fail to mention is the fact that wide receivers who can win quickly
39:02allow you to get the ball out of your hands quickly so that you're not waiting on these
39:05long developing patterns and the three receivers said, it's like, Nope, my guy can win on a
39:09go router.
39:10He went on a slant.
39:11That's basically a quick throw.
39:12Yeah.
39:13Look, I, I think the dairy low has proved to be a, a, a solid replacement level player
39:19in the NFL where he he's filling the gap right now.
39:22Um, he, he's, he's far better than anybody ever thought he was going to be after last
39:26year.
39:27And I know he's flipped from right tackle to the left tackle and he's looked a lot more
39:29comfortable there.
39:30Um, you know, but in the end it's the, I still think you need a long-term answer there.
39:33So with him playing okay, football and him being under contact, like you said, I think
39:38it gives you a little bit more flexibility to not rush for left tackle at the top of
39:42the draft, find the wide receiver tackle in the second round.
39:45That way you can kind of, it's somebody who you can bring in.
39:48You don't feel the necessarily need to start them right away.
39:50He can maybe develop and sit for a little while, and then he can kind of take over eventually
39:54for, um, a guy like the dairy low.
39:56So I think ultimately it's wide receiver, but I also don't think, um, and I'm not even
40:00going to pull up the question.
40:01I know it's in there, but there's the Travis Hunter conversation.
40:04We think he's going to end up playing cornerback.
40:06I don't know about him at wide receiver.
40:08I know you're not a fan of him wide receiver in the league.
40:10So if it's like a tech McMillan, then we'll go there and then kind of take the, you know,
40:13true X Y to zero versus the more gadgety player, if you will, um, in, in, uh, in Travis Hunter
40:20and go from there.
40:21Um, do you see anything in here, Taylor, that you want to answer?
40:23I know we don't have much time.
40:24Um, I'll just go quickly.
40:27The Thornton injury real or a sign that a trade's coming.
40:30I don't think they're going to fudge the injury report for a trade.
40:33Um, I think that a trade could be coming and could not be, but I don't think the ankle
40:37has anything to do with that.
40:38I think they just have to report it and they don't like to mess around with that kind of
40:40stuff.
40:41I'm on the exact same page.
40:42I don't think you'd put a player on the injury report if he was going to get traded.
40:47Cause that's a bad look and teams are going to be like, well, how hurt is he?
40:50And it just opens up questions and you know, you might scare them off.
40:52I don't know if that's enough to scare somebody off that just that you're limited in a practice,
40:56but yeah, I, I don't think that's an indication of anything true.
40:59Yeah.
41:00Um, all right, let's finish or unless you want, I was just going to say, let's finish.
41:03Let's finish off with this.
41:04Where are the Patriots going to be in three seasons?
41:06What's your estimate?
41:07Superbowl.
41:08Oh boy.
41:09Okay.
41:10Honestly, I don't think it's even that crazy to say three years.
41:13We're talking about Drake Mays last season, bro.
41:16By then I think you should be, have a much, much better roster.
41:21Um, it's so tough.
41:22Cause like, I mean, the coaching is just, it's still so unproven.
41:26That's the biggest thing.
41:27It's like you can have talent, but that doesn't mean you're going anywhere.
41:29So I think there'll be a legitimate playoff contender because I think Drake May three
41:34years from now is going to be one of the top 12, 10 quarterbacks in the NFL.
41:39We've already seen like mentally he's well beyond what most people expected.
41:43Not me necessarily, but well beyond what most people expected.
41:47And then I think by then if his accuracy is still a problem, you know, I guess it is
41:51what it is, but with his work ethic, I would be stunned if even next season, his glaring
41:56issues right now are still as glaring next year.
41:58So yeah, I think they're legit playoff contenders.
42:00I think that's, yeah, that's the way to go.
42:02I know we, we want Superbowl.
42:04You want Superbowl.
42:05We want it.
42:06You know, we want to go to the Superbowl.
42:07Like that's the ultimate goal.
42:08But ultimately if you get in the dance, you have a chance.
42:11Right.
42:12And that's kind of where, you know, the Cincinnati Bengals started there where they were a wild
42:15card team.
42:16All the way there.
42:17It happened really fast for them because they had the quarterback.
42:19Now you got to build up things around, right?
42:22You need, you know, a stout offensive line needed weapons and you need this, this coaching
42:26staff to really hit and you need a more consistent, I would say offensive plan overall around
42:31Drake may, but you know, figure that out.
42:33It seems like, you know, it's only been a quarter and a half or a couple of games or
42:37whatever it's been a game and a half, whatever it's been for Drake may, but he has looked
42:41solid so far.
42:42It looks like you may have hit on the one here.
42:43So continue to develop him, get yourself in the dance and who knows, maybe you wind up
42:47playing in a Superbowl in three years.
42:49That's going to do it for us here on Pat's daily, a Titans preview edition of the show.
