Greg Bedard and Nick Cattles preview the final Patriots game of the 2024-25 NFL season as New England prepares to face the Buffalo Bills on the line. A loss would clinch the first overall pick for the Patriots, but Drake Maye has been confirmed as the starter. Will the Patriots find a way to win when most fans don't want them to?

00:00This is the Greg the guard Patriots podcast with Nick cabins.
00:10Before we get started.
00:11I have one question for you, Greg, are you sick of me yet?
00:17After three hours with you yesterday, I mean, we had two hours on Monday.
00:21I know I was like the fourth guy in the studio, but two hours on Felgerd Maz and then three
00:26hours yesterday.
00:27No, I'm, uh, I, I surprisingly, uh, no, I'm not sick of you yet, you know?
00:36Yeah.
00:37All right.
00:38Uh, before we get started, download the prize picks app today.
00:41Use code CLNS, get 50 bucks instantly.
00:43When you play $5 that's code CLNS on prize picks to get 50 bucks instantly.
00:48When you play five bucks, also take the guesswork out of buying tickets with game time, download
00:53the game time app, create an account.
00:55Use code CLNS for 20 bucks off your first purchase.
00:58Uh, Greg, Alex van Pelt spoke to the media today.
01:02He said that Drake may, we'll start your thoughts on the Patriots starting Drake may against
01:08the bills on Sunday.
01:09I can just imagine, um, your, your rage when you saw that coming across, um, Twitter today.
01:18Uh, I'm, uh, as you know, cause we talked about this, uh, yesterday for a while.
01:24Uh, I'm fine with it.
01:25I think it's pretty much the way that they had to play it now.
01:30Uh, I think my guess is that they're going to play this like a preseason game.
01:35If, if, if I'm them, uh, I'm going, and they really should have been probably doing this
01:41from the beginning and for a while, uh, something else we talked about during this season.
01:45I think they're going to go very simple, uh, with the offense, run the ball, um, you know,
01:52max protect a little bit more than they have, uh, try to make it safe.
01:56I could see him playing about a quarter and then I think they're going to get him out
02:02of there.
02:03Cause I do think, I think this is a big game, uh, for me, for evaluations of guys, specifically
02:09a guy like Caden Wallace, who we, we, he made a cameo.
02:13I stopped watching by then because I couldn't stomach any more of the film, um, from that
02:18game.
02:19So I, I think he needs to play extensively in the game and I'm not risking Drake may
02:25behind him, Letitia Smith or whoever he is, um, you know, that sort of thing.
02:34So, um, I, I, I was also going through Nick in terms of, cause we talked about this, um,
02:42you know, you can only have seven inactive players.
02:45And so you look at it, well, somebody would be the third quarterback right now.
02:49I have Jacoby Brissette as the third quarterback, but based on the injury report, I'm sitting
02:53Gonzalez, Henry peppers, Ben Brown is still in concussion protocol, apparently, uh, which
03:01I'm a little bit bummed about cause I'd really like to have him in front of Drake may.
03:06So we don't get the early snap situation that we had last week with Cole strange, but it
03:11is what it is.
03:13And then I looked at, uh, two more guys.
03:16So Brissette would be the third quarterback.
03:17So Milton can play, uh, in relief of Drake may.
03:22And then I would probably Devon Godchow.
03:26They claim some defensive tackle this week or defensive end.
03:30Uh, I thought that was maybe a tell, well, it could be like a guy like Dietrich wise
03:34that they sit instead, but a couple of veterans like Devon Godchow, Jonathan Jones, I can't
03:39believe he's on, he's not on the injury report, which makes his performance from Saturday
03:44even worse.
03:45Uh, but I, I think this is kind of how you have to play it.
03:49You're limited.
03:50This isn't like college where you have 102 players on sideline that you could suit up.
03:55You only have 53, you can only have seven inactives, um, you know, try to get a little
04:01bit of a good feeling to, to end the season, at least for the first team guys.
04:07And then, um, try to get them out of there if you can.
04:11I hate it.
04:12I said it yesterday on the show.
04:13I'm not moving from that.
04:15I hate the idea of playing Drake may, I don't trust Drake may, uh, I don't trust his ability
04:22to keep himself out of harm's way.
04:24We just saw this last week.
04:26He should have just stepped out of bounds.
04:28He turns up field, takes an unnecessary hit.
04:31Very fortunate.
04:32He did not get concussed from that hit.
04:34He runs around like wild E coyote scrambling with the football.
04:38It's just his natural instincts.
04:40And I, I don't like that idea in week 18 of a season that you're a three and 13 going
04:47into this final game.
04:48And there's just, there's really nothing to gain.
04:51I keep hearing people talk about, well, you know, I want to see him play well, really
04:56like against the backups of the Buffalo bills that that's going to tell us something that
05:01what does it tell you about Drake may that we don't already know if he plays a quarter
05:06or a half against the backups of the Buffalo bills and plays decently.
05:11It doesn't tell me anything.
05:12The bills are not going to take this game seriously.
05:14So it just, it doesn't make much sense to me.
05:16As far as the roster shuffling, you said it, Greg.
05:20It's easy.
05:21It's an easy fix.
05:22Drake may is your emergency third quarterback.
05:25That's it.
05:26Start Joe Milton.
05:27Jacoby preset is his backup.
05:28That's how you handle the roster shuffling.
05:30Just like Joe Milton's been the emergency quarterback for the first 16 games of this
05:35season.
05:36You put Drake may in Joe Milton spot and Joe Milton in Drake may spot and voila problem
05:42fixed.
05:44I don't get it.
05:46Teams are resting guys.
05:47The Eagles are resting guys.
05:49Saquon Barkley is a hundred yards away from breaking the rushing record.
05:53He's going to sit this weekend.
05:54I don't see the difference between sitting Drake may to protect him in the final week
05:59of the season.
06:00When, when you sit him in the fourth quarter of last week's game to protect him, it's the
06:04same idea.
06:07You don't want your franchise quarterback getting hurt.
06:08These are all adults.
06:10They all understand.
06:11I know they want to feel like they're not, you know, as important as Drake may, but everybody
06:15gets it.
06:16Greg, everybody in the league understands the quarterback is the quarterback.
06:20You protect the quarterback, the rules of the game, protect the quarterback.
06:23I don't think it's a big deal.
06:25I don't think the team is going to have a mutiny if they sit Drake may down and say,
06:29Hey, discretion is the better part of valor.
06:31So I just hate the idea.
06:33And I hate one more thing, the thought process, because we had a call yesterday during that
06:38show that I wanted to, you know, counter, but we had to hit a break this, this whole
06:45thing of like, well, it's football guys get hurt.
06:47You know, you can get hurt doing anything.
06:49I understand.
06:50Okay.
06:51But, but let me try to give you a real life analogy.
06:53I can get run over by a truck walking out my front door.
06:58Terrible luck.
06:59Wow.
07:00Nick got hit by a truck.
07:01I can also try to run across the highway at night and get hit by a truck.
07:08Is it as bad of luck as me walking out the front door?
07:12No.
07:13So of course, Drake may can get hurt doing anything, but the point is, why would you
07:18put him more at risk in this kind of situation?
07:21This is going to be a huge off season for him.
07:23We all want to see him make the year two leap.
07:26God forbid he gets hurt with a serious injury and he's out for the next two or three months
07:31and he can't get to that off season work.
07:33The risk reward just doesn't make sense to me.
07:35It really doesn't.
07:36And van Pelt also said today, Greg, that the intent is to win the game.
07:42And that was during the question as, as far as whether or not Drake may would play the
07:46entire game.
07:48I know you would just want them to play a quarter, maybe a half.
07:51What do you think the Patriots do?
07:55You know, it's interesting because, you know, we, as we've, as we've come to know, uh, with
08:03the Gerard Mayo regime, like they say one thing, they do another.
08:08Um, I think I was listening to the zone beetle, the, uh, today and, uh, beetle of course,
08:15who's in rare form about Mayo, um, you know, made some sort of joke that he wouldn't be
08:19surprised if Gerard Mayo does the pregame interview with, with Zoe.
08:24And then it says Drake may starting, but then Joe Milton starting the game.
08:27Uh, cause I do think that's where they are, but you know, just the way Mayo talked the
08:32other day, it was, I don't know, it was kind of wishy-washy about like, he says like, he's
08:38our starter and if he's healthy, he's good to go.
08:41And he also says he's healthy.
08:44So why not just come out and say, he's starting the game.
08:47And then all of a sudden they go out to practice and Drake may pops up with a hand injury on
08:53the, on the injury report.
08:55And that launched a thousand memes of Rodney Dangerfield and caddy shack on my arm.
09:00I think it's broke.
09:01Like, I mean, what are we doing here?
09:04What an Epic clown show.
09:06Uh, I, I think what's going to happen is I think.
09:10May's going to play a quarter, maybe plus, I doubt he gets the halftime.
09:15It's possible.
09:17It depends on, I think how the game's going, how the protection's going, things like that.
09:22Um, and then I think they turn it over to Joe Milton and the backups.
09:25And I think they're still trying to do well.
09:27I mean, all those guys are trying to put good film out there and trying to earn
09:34jobs from next year for next year, whether it's in new England or beyond.
09:38Um, I think people also sort of, um, neglect to talk about that, but that's.
09:44Probably one of the biggest components of this type of situation is, uh, you know,
09:49all these guys around the league are, are fighting for their lives, their livelihood.
09:54Uh, so they have to put good film out there.
09:56They can't go out there and half-ass it and be like, uh, well, you know,
10:00they want us to lose the game.
10:01So I'm just going to whiff on this block that, however, that being said, you know,
10:05we got that call yesterday about the Eagles and the Nate Sudfeld game.
10:09I think it was two years ago or three years ago.
10:11It was whatever it was.
10:12It was Doug Peterson's last game with the Eagles and Jalen Hurst started that game.
10:17He played terrible Sudfeld came in and I was asking somebody in Philly.
10:24I said, what was the, what was the deal with that?
10:26Because I remember at the time it was, it was very awkward.
10:30And, um, basically the belief, and I remember this from the time the
10:35belief was that Jeffrey Lurie and Howie Roseman ordered the code red
10:40that the Eagles lose that game.
10:43Uh, and that Doug Peterson like completely botched the messaging on how
10:48they're approaching the game, how they talk, how we talk to the players about it.
10:52I mean, it wasn't why he got fired.
10:54I think it was maybe the final nail in his coffin.
10:57Uh, but the caller said yesterday, Hey, nobody, nobody cares that the
11:01Eagles threw that final game.
11:03Well, Doug Peterson does.
11:04Cause that was his last game as coach of the Eagles.
11:07Uh, I think we're looking at a similar situation here where I think there's
11:12probably some talk internally about, you know, let's play it, but not really.
11:19And if we can, let's try to lose the game.
11:24It just hurts my head.
11:26All of it hurts my head.
11:27Like playing Drake may a quarter against Buffalo's backups.
11:33Like he's going to play like a series or two.
11:35Like what is the great revelation that we're all going to have on Sunday
11:40afternoon, if Drake may has a great series or two against the backups?
11:45It's it just, it makes no sense to me whatsoever.
11:49Like 0.0.
11:51All right.
11:51We got more to talk about as far as this game coming up on Sunday.
11:54But first Greg wants to tell you about prize.

13:14After you play your first $5 lineup prize fix, run your game.
13:20What do we think the scene is going to be at Gillette on Sunday?
13:23That's the first question I have for you.
13:24The second.
13:26Does it matter in the eyes of the crafts?
13:28If, if we have what we expect to have on Sunday, which is the glorified pre-season
13:34boring ass football game with one team, hoping they lose to get the number one
13:39pick the other team, not caring if they lose, cause they're already
13:41the number two seed in the AFC.
13:43So I would anticipate, uh, I don't know, 50% capacity, uh, mostly quiet
13:52unless Joe Milton rips a 70 yard bomb.
13:55You might get some excitement out of that.
13:58I don't know if people will start chanting for Mayo's job.
14:02If more people will start chanting for, for Mayo's job, uh, like,
14:06you know, more than last week.
14:08What do you think the scene's going to be?
14:10And does it matter to the crafts?
14:11Greg?
14:12I think it's going to be fairly ugly, Nick.
14:15And, and I do think, I do wonder, uh, in their conversations, like how much does
14:22may give them some cover, if any, in this game, the longer they play him, the
14:27quicker he exits, I think that'll make people even grumpier that, you know, I
14:34paid, uh, 60 bucks on game time to get into this game and, you know, Drake may
14:39plays a series and he, he handed the ball off like three times, like, you
14:44know, good luck with that.
14:45Uh, I, I think it's going to be pretty ugly.
14:47I think that, um, I do think that if you're a fan who is not happy with the
14:55direction of this franchise, uh, I do think this is a good opportunity for them
15:01to voice their displeasure, uh, to ownership.
15:04And I think there will be a sizable contingent of those fans that do that.
15:09How much is it going to matter?
15:11I think it's going to matter a little bit.
15:13I mean, I, again, I don't know where the crafts are on this.
15:16Um, I'm sure they have their thoughts.
15:18I'm sure they've been thinking, I think, uh, most of the judgment should have
15:22came, uh, as a result of the chargers game, that freaking debacle that was on
15:27Saturday and just a completely unprofessional football product in every
15:31single way.
15:32Uh, but you know, this will be the last time they see this team, uh, going into
15:40their post-season meetings with what's going on.
15:43Uh, I do think it matters.
15:44I do.
15:45If there's any wavering, um, especially on the part of Robert craft, I don't
15:52know how much I think Jonathan, um, has, well, I don't think he's been thrilled
16:00with, with the on-field product this year.
16:02Um, but the bottom line is it's going to come down to Robert and I think, uh, a
16:08game like Sunday, really ugly, half full people chanting throughout the game.
16:14I do think that it could sway the old man a little bit when it comes down to it.
16:19Um, but I guess we'll have to see.
16:23Just to fill in some Patriots fans, if they're unaware of what else is going
16:26on here, the number one pick, let me just quickly run through something
16:31before we get to Gerard Mayo and what we think is going to happen with him on
16:35black Monday, so the Patriots right now, they are in the slot as the number one
16:41pick, as we all know, and they got Buffalo this weekend, the other teams
16:45that they're battling right now, uh, Tennessee and Cleveland and the giants.
16:50So Tennessee is going to play Houston.
16:53Houston is already locked in as the number four seed.
16:56And so with the digs injury, the tank Dell injury, it'll be interesting to
17:01see how the Texans play that game.
17:03Tennessee is going to be, I would imagine trying to win that football game.
17:07So it is within the realm of possibility that you have a week 18 special with
17:12the Titans beating the Texans, depending on how the Texans handle it, you've got
17:16Cleveland at Baltimore, uh, Cleveland is going to play reportedly, uh, DTR and
17:24also Bailey's zappy might reportedly get some snaps.
17:26So if you're, if you still got the zappy fever, though, you could
17:30check out that Cleveland game.
17:32Uh, the bad news for the Browns is that Baltimore does
17:35have something to play for.
17:36They're fighting for the AFC North.
17:38So I would imagine Baltimore will be motivated and play pretty
17:43hard in that football game.
17:45The other team, of course, as I mentioned, is the giants.
17:47And they've got an interesting situation because they're playing at Philly and
17:51Philly, as I mentioned earlier with Saquon Barkley, they've already come out
17:55and said that they're going to rest a lot of guys.
17:57So you do have, even if the, even if the Patriots win on Sunday, you do have the
18:03opportunity possibly of maybe staying within the top two.
18:08I'm not confident whatsoever that Cleveland beats Baltimore, because again,
18:12Baltimore has something to play for, but it's not crazy talk to believe
18:17that Tennessee can beat Houston.
18:19If Houston decides to sit there guys in the second half or sit
18:22there guys, the whole game.
18:23And it's also not nuts to believe the giants who won last week, you
18:27know, division rivalry playing at Philly.
18:29Philly is going to rest pretty much everybody that they can rest.
18:32It's not nuts to believe that maybe the giants, if they take it
18:35seriously, could pull, pull off a win.
18:37So not all is lost possibly if the, if the Patriots beat the bills on Sunday,
18:44but of course the easiest path to the top pick is just losing against Buffalo.
18:49Uh,
18:50what, one thing I wanted to mention, um, and I'm sure we will get into this
18:54plenty over the next few months.
18:57Uh, but you know, speaking of draft position, I was, uh, I started to look
19:03at, um, draft capital that, that some of the other teams have.
19:07Um, I did find it interesting that, uh, you know, so we're looking at probably,
19:13um, you know, at least four teams, uh, in the top eight that need quarterback.
19:19So you have the, the Titans who I think are number two right now, the giants at
19:23four, the jets at seven, the Raiders at eight.
19:28Um, I did find it interesting that, so the giants, the Titans and the jets
19:34both only have their, they have first and second round picks.
19:37They don't have their third round picks.
19:39Yeah.
19:40The giants have, um, they have their first, second, third, and fourth, the
19:46fourth, depending on, I guess, I guess it could change with compensatory picks,
19:50but right now that fourth round pick is one Oh five.
19:53So they have the ability to give you their top four picks plus
19:57probably a first the next year.
20:00Um, the Raiders have, uh, first, second, they have two thirds, 71 and 72.
20:08Um, that could be interesting.
20:11Uh, you know, if you're talking about, you know, give us your top four picks
20:14this year, all in the top 80 and, uh, a future first and where, you know,
20:21we're talking some business, but, um, it, you know, we were, we talked
20:25about it on radio a little bit.
20:27Um, and I haven't, hadn't really started to look at it, but I have now, uh, about,
20:32you know, how much the Patriots are going to get to, you know, how much leverage
20:36are they really going to have considering they don't need a quarterback, but
20:40hopefully it stays where there's a, there's a team below them that needs a
20:45quarterback, um, like right now it's Tennessee, I think, I think that's the
20:50way it is right now, and if that happens, now you have all these other teams who
20:54are like, well, we have to get to number one, um, because we can't bank on the
20:59Patriots, like, you know, bluffing and not taking somebody.
21:02So, um, just a little bit of interesting draft talk.
21:06All right.
21:06I'm going to talk about Gerard Mayo's future.
21:08What do we think happens after Sunday?
21:10Before we get into it though, Greg, we'll tell you what
21:13happens when you use game time.
21:15Yeah.
21:16Hey, you want to, you want to voice your displeasure to the crafts?
21:19Get up all in their grill.
21:21Get into those red seats, be right in front of their box.
21:24You know what you need to do?
21:24Go to game time because you can do that.

22:02Uh, you can get into the, uh, the two hundreds row, 1675 bucks all in.
22:08Of course you can get in for about 50 or 60 bucks into the third level.

22:28What time is it?
22:29Game time.
22:30Hi, Gerard Mayo.
22:34Black Monday is coming up.
22:37And of course that is the term used for teams that decide to cut the cord.
22:43We've seen enough.
22:44Goodbye.
22:46Greg, this is the last time that you and I will talk about Gerard
22:50Mayo's future before black Monday.
22:53What do you think?
22:55So I think the chances of him being let go on black Monday are not good.
23:00I think the, the crafts, um, usually have their, their meetings.
23:05Uh, and it's usually multiple meetings over multiple days.
23:11Um, we all remember the picture of Robert and Bill at, uh, Davios
23:15or whatever, uh, breaking bread.
23:18Uh, I think we see similar.
23:20I, if Mayo's let go, I don't think it happens until Wednesday
23:26at the earliest, uh, in my mind.
23:29As of today, the Bedard meter on Mayo, um, is hit him being back as Patriots
23:38coach, I would put at 60%, um, right now.
23:43Of course, I think anybody who has listened to me or read me, uh, especially
23:46since the chargers games know what I would do, I would fire everybody.
23:51Start over, uh, admit the Mulligan say, I, sorry, I put these
23:55guys in a, in a tough position.
23:58Um, we're moving on.
24:00I, I, I haven't seen anything from him that has indicated one iota that, uh,
24:06things are going to be any better next year that he is going to
24:10be a good coach anytime soon.
24:11I think this was way too early for him.
24:14Um, not fair to him.
24:15Uh, it's a crass fault for doing this and putting him in that position
24:19and not having him educated enough to be ready and hit the ground running.
24:23But I did want to say this, Nick, I have a little bit of a developing
24:26opinion that, um, I was thinking about.
24:29Oh, hold on.
24:30Hold on.
24:30Before you get to that, I'll bring, cause I'll get into the
24:33developing opinion in a minute.
24:35I agree with you.
24:36Uh, I think it's blow it up time.
24:39I've seen enough.
24:40The Arizona game is what really got me leaning away from Mayo.
24:43I gave him time that Arizona game post buy was, uh, was just awful to watch.
24:49And I said, well, if you have a chance to get Vrabel, I
24:52would make that move right now.
24:54And then you have last weekend's game.
24:55And now I'm open-minded to like, just opening the process up, even if
25:00you can't get Vrabel and entertain the idea of just moving on anyway.
25:03I mean, I'm, I'm there after last week's game that you could
25:06even do it without Vrabel.
25:08Uh, I'm a little bit less inclined to do that if I'm craft, however,
25:13cause then you're just resetting everything and you're going to
25:15reset everything for an unknown.
25:17But my question to you, Greg, before we get to the interesting theory
25:24from you, uh, that we'll get to, can anything on Sunday change what you think?
25:31Like if you're Robert craft, you're, you're likely leaning.
25:35You said 60% leaning towards keeping Mayo.
25:39Can that number move depending on Sunday or Sunday's already baked in?
25:43Because you know that the game is pretty much meaningless for both teams.
25:48Yeah, I, I mean, I do think that the, if Robert is teetering, um, and he could
25:56be, I don't, I don't, um, dismiss that notion, um, I do think that
26:01the scene, the crowd reaction, the amount of people there, I do think
26:05could influence Robert maybe, you know, that little bit more that 10% more to
26:10be like, all right, uh, this, this was a debacle, this isn't going anywhere.
26:16Uh, we need change.
26:17We need to, um, we need to turn around this fan base so that
26:23they're enthused for next year.
26:25And through the back channeling that we've done.
26:29And again, I'm just, this is just, uh, I I'm not reporting anything.
26:32I'm just saying like, I I'm, I I'm sure this has happened.
26:37I'm sure they've done some homework, but just in a best case scenario
26:41for the Patriots that they've done some back channeling and they know that
26:45Mike Vrabel and Josh McDaniels are teaming up and are ready to come back
26:50here and that would give the franchise a boost, I mean, just compare the, I
26:57mean, even if they, the Patriots kept everything as it is spent a boatload in
27:02the off season, uh, maybe had a great draft, I don't know, got a great draft
27:07hall for number one, like the enthusiasm I think would tick up a little bit, but
27:13not very much, you do the same thing, but you bring in Vrabel and McDaniels and
27:19whatever, whoever is that GM, all this stuff, uh, I think all of a sudden now
27:25the Patriots are cooking with gas a little bit and people are excited.
27:28So, um, uh, you know, I, I don't think the game itself is going to matter much,
27:34but I do think the scene, everything involved could factor in a little bit.
27:40All right, let's get to your, uh, your theory, your idea here.
27:43Uh, could the crafts, Greg, you mentioned this in the email today.
27:46Could the crafts view this situation as an interim head coach slash GM thing and
27:53all right, it was, it was the one year thing.
27:57We saw what we saw from Mayo and Elliott Wolf.
27:59We gave it a shot.
28:01Let's treat it like an interim deal and just move forward.
28:04Yeah.
28:05So I had this thought the other day and for no particular reason, but I was
28:09just, I was just thinking about it.
28:10And, um, again, this is not reporting.
28:14This is just me and my half-baked, um, ideas, but you know, what if, what if
28:20the crafts, um, and, and I, and I, this is similar to sort of Belichick
28:25going into his final season.
28:26Uh, remember, you know, Robert wanted to fire, reportedly wanted to fire
28:30bill after the whole Patricia and judge debacle, Jonathan talked him out of it,
28:34but they said, you know, we'll, we'll give you, we'll give you another year
28:38to prove yourself and he didn't.
28:41And you know, the crafts ideally in their mind, the whole moving, going to
28:47Mayo was supposed to be down the line.
28:49It was supposed to be years down the line.
28:51Bill turns things around.
28:53Uh, but it didn't work out that way, but the, but the crafts already had the
28:58contract with Gerard Mayo, the succession language, and you know, they could have
29:04torn it up, they could have bottomed out, but they decided, you know what?
29:09May maybe we'll catch lightning in a bottle.
29:11Maybe Gerard is, is going to be the difference.
29:14Maybe a change in atmosphere and culture and all this stuff is, is just what we
29:20need and how it could be very cost-effective for us anyways, we don't
29:24have to displace a whole bunch of people really, you know, we have to bring in
29:28some coaches, especially on the offense side of the ball, but really it's pretty
29:33cheap.
29:34And what if they also told Elliot Wolf it as the GM, like you can't go nuts on.
29:43Can't go nuts in free agency.
29:45Yeah.
29:46You know, we need a wide receiver.
29:47We'll prove that, but you can't go like above and beyond.
29:50Let's not get stupid here.
29:52But what if they gave him some restraints to be like, all right, this wasn't, I are
29:57ideal way to move on from bill, but we're going to do it for a year.
30:02We're going to see how it is.
30:03And you know, we also saw a member of Elliot Wolf was basically, he didn't get
30:08the job until after free agency and after the draft.
30:11And so what if the craft said, this wasn't what we wanted to do.
30:17This wasn't the plan, but let's see if it works.
30:19Cause if it works, it's even better for us because we haven't, uh, we
30:23haven't put in a lot of money.
30:25Worst case scenario, it doesn't work.
30:28We blow it up.
30:29We do what we should have done, but it's just a year from now.
30:33It's just a year later and we already have the quarterback.
30:38Uh, we'll have a good draft pick.
30:40We'll still have all this cap space.
30:41We'll have all the cap space in the league.
30:43Cause we didn't let them spend it the year before.
30:46Um, if they earned the job, then they get to do it.
30:49They get to do it their way.
30:50Let's see how they do it that year.
30:52And it hasn't worked.
30:54So now they say, you know what?
30:55That was sort of like an interim year for those guys.
30:59We didn't get the pop that we thought they didn't show the promise.
31:02Uh, no harm, no foul, because we still, we have all our money.
31:06We have all our draft capital.
31:08Now we're going to do it the right way.
31:09Uh, Vrabel was still out there.
31:12Uh, we just basically viewed that that year as a, uh, as an interim year, instead
31:17of just like a half season firing bill at the end, promoting Gerard, it was just a
31:22whole season of it and we tried it.
31:26Could have worked, but it didn't work.
31:29No harm, no foul.
31:30We still have everything and let's go forward.
31:33Don't hate it.
31:35I mean, if, if that's the way they want to look at it, if that's the way they
31:38looked at it before this season, um, I don't think it's the best way to do
31:44business.
31:44Of course we've talked about, yeah, we've talked about the lack of a process
31:48and how we would have done things.
31:51Uh, but I mean, if that's the way he looked at it, then I guess it would make
31:56more sense than just blindly believing that Mayo was going to be the guy for
32:00the next five, six, seven, eight, 10 years.
32:03Um, and I think you could look at it as like an interim thing, frankly.
32:07I mean, if you brought Belichick back and he lasted like three weeks and then you
32:11went to Gerard is a, you can maybe look at it as an interim situation.
32:16Uh, I just, man, I have big time concern with how the next three weeks to a
32:24month is going to play out.
32:26I really do.
32:27I, I've lost faith.
32:30I've lost faith in, in the crafts to do this right.
32:33And that's unfortunate.
32:36I wish I did not lose faith.
32:38I gave the crafts the benefit of the doubt last off season said, Hey, look,
32:41they, they hired Belichick, they hired Pete Carroll.
32:44Those are the only two head coaches they've hired.
32:46Both guys are going to be in the hall of fame one day.
32:49Uh, so, Hey, maybe Robert saw something special.
32:52I hate the fact that didn't go through a process, but maybe, maybe he's right on
32:58Mayo.
32:58Well, I'll, I'll, I'll give him a shot.
33:01Then obviously it hasn't worked out.
33:03And I just, after, after how they, how they've handled their business recently,
33:13I just don't know how you have any faith in this, in this ownership
33:16to do it right this time around.
33:18And that sucks.
33:19It sucks to be in that kind of a place because you know, for 20 plus years,
33:23we talked about Robert craft as one of the best owners in football.
33:27And now, you know, you can certainly question a lot of things over the last
33:34couple of years and Greg, you you've written about it, you know, recently
33:37about all the things and how they've kind of gone off the rails here.
33:40And this is their chance.
33:41This is their chance to correct some of the massive mistakes that they've
33:44made in the past couple of years.
33:46And if they just go out there and fire Alex van Pelt, and that's the answer.
33:51I mean, I'm just, I'll be infuriated.
33:55All right.
33:55Before we get to the, uh, pro bowl and our thoughts about Sunday's game, we
33:59will give you a little bit of a prediction here on Sunday's game.
34:01There's really no need to go deep into the breakdown because we
34:05know what's happening on Sunday.
34:08Uh, but before we get to that, Greg, uh, I know that you had to go through
34:11this, like furnace deal, uh, about a month ago, you were telling me how
34:16like miserable it was that your, your furnace was down, you didn't
34:19know what you were going to do, but you found somebody to help.
34:23Didn't you, Greg?
34:24I did.
34:25I found Niterno and thank God I did.

34:34That's why I'm so glad I worked with Niterno home services.

34:46My comfort advisor, Nick came in, did an assessment.
34:50He was awesome to deal with, answered all my ridiculous
34:52questions.
34:53Hey, I'm a total amateur at this stuff.
34:55I am not Mr.
34:56Handy or Mr.
34:57Fix-it or anything like that.
34:58Scheduling was a breeze.
34:59Didn't have to wait for anyone to get back to me on installation day.
35:03They showed up on time before eight and were gone by five.
35:06And even though it was a muddy mess outside, you couldn't tell when they
35:10were gone because they put tarps down.
35:11Oh, and all the work they did was perfect.
35:13This is a little nerdy, but I actually like to watch and
35:16listen to my new boiler work now.
35:19Uh, Niterno isn't just about heating.
35:21They were my gold two for plumbing, cooling, even water
35:24and air quality solutions.
35:25They've got the expertise to handle whatever your home needs.
35:28Here's the best part.

35:54get the job done, right?
35:55Check them out today.
35:56I trust Niterno.
35:57So should you.
35:59Pro bowl voting, school are in, Gonzalez out, Greg Bedard.
36:05So school is totally deserving, even though I could care
36:08less about special teams.
36:10Um, as we've seen the Patriots special teams has actually
36:12been pretty good this year.
36:13And, uh, well, their coverage teams at least, um, have my issues with
36:19Berenger and Joey sly they're on my list this year.
36:23Uh, but.
36:25Schooler was really good.
36:26The only thing I wanted to say about schooler though, and I'm not sure if I
36:29mentioned this on the podcast or when we were on the radio, but, um, so I'm
36:34watching, I'm at the game on Saturday and this was the Patriots go like
36:39three and out to start the second half.
36:40I think they're down 20 to seven at that point.
36:43And they had the punt that the guy returned for a touchdown, but there
36:46were two flags on the chargers and I'm, I'm, I'm watching this.
36:51Okay.
36:52And Brandon schooler is taunting the charger sideline the entire time.
36:59Like as the guy's taking it back, he's dancing in front of them,
37:02pointing backwards, like, like, dude, I mean, I, I, like, I, he,
37:10I think he's an incredible player.
37:11I do, but between this stuff and him arguing with officials a little bit
37:17this year, a lot last year, losing his freaking mind, like, you know, it's,
37:22I hate calling current Patriots players tools, but it's definitely tool-ish
37:26and like, can you like Matthew Slade?
37:29Let me just say this.
37:30Matthew Slater might go into the hall of fame for his role in special
37:34teams, which is basically what schoolers doing now, Matthew Slater
37:38was the epitome of being a professional football player.
37:41He never talked trash.
37:42He never did anything.
37:44He never had stupid penalties, like, you know, be more like slate.
37:48Okay.
37:49Please.
37:49So I can like you more as a player because you're damn good, but stop
37:53being a tool with some of these things.
37:55And, uh, the other thing, um, everybody's up in arms about Christian
38:00Gonzalez, including you, Christian Gonzalez, not being a pro bowler.
38:05Uh, I'm sorry.
38:06Uh, cry me a river.
38:08Um, it's it, look, he's a good player.
38:11If he was on there, I wouldn't say anything about it, but the AFC is
38:15freaking brutal for cornerbacks.
38:16And I do think Christian is going to get there, but this is what happens when
38:19you're on a suck bag team on a suck bag defense, your, your passing defense
38:24for the Patriots is 31st in DVO way.
38:27Now I will pull a lot of that on the lack of a pass rush.
38:30And I know bill Barnwell put Gonzalez as one of his all pros, you know,
38:34whatever, I mean, Bardwell does a good job, but sometimes he just does these
38:38things to be different and we've all done it.
38:42We all put together these teams and sometimes you'd be like, well, I'm
38:45going to be different, uh, and put this guy on there, I think in terms of, so
38:50the starter for AFC are pass or tan.
38:53Who's the best corner in the game.
38:54Probably Derek Stingley jr.
38:56Who I think led the, the led the league in past breakups, Marlon Humphrey,
39:01who I think is phenomenal and had a better year than Christian Gonzalez.
39:04Now Denzel ward in the four spot.
39:07You could definitely make an argument about he's damn good.
39:10Um, I personally would have put Trent McDuffie of the chiefs there.
39:16Uh, but I think, I think it's safe to say that Gonzalez in the AFC is, I
39:21don't know, top eight, of course, when the jets get good again and they don't
39:24have a crap bag interim, uh, coach who forgets how to coach defense, um, you
39:30know, guys like sauce Gardner, DJ Reed will be back up there, but, uh, I don't
39:35think it was a gross injustice that Christian Gonzalez was not
39:38Dane to the AFC pro bowl team.
39:40It's just, it's a really tough crowded field in the AFC and
39:45that's nothing against him.
39:46You're wrong.
39:47It was criminal.
39:48Uh, if you look at Christian Gonzalez, uh, first of all, he should
39:52not be paying for others sins.
39:54Okay.
39:54He should not have to pay for DeMarcus Covington being bad.
39:58Or some of the other players out there, Kyle Duggar on one foot being terrible.
40:03Uh, he should not pay for that.
40:04He should not pay for the lack of a pass rush from his defense.
40:07He should not, this is an individual award.
40:09This is to say you individually have been great.
40:13And that's what Christian Gonzalez has been.
40:15He has been great.
40:16And they also play a ton of man coverage.
40:19He's one of the only corners that that's, that's shadowing and, you
40:25know, playing man as much as he is.
40:28A lot of these other teams are playing a bunch of zone sauce.
40:32Gardner is a perfect example.
40:33The jets will play a bunch of zone.
40:35Robert Sala plays a bunch of zone, uh, before he got canned.
40:39So I'm not saying that sauce Gardner is not good or really good.
40:42It's just different to me when a guy says I'm going to shadow a receiver and he plays
40:46as much man coverage as Gonzalez does.
40:48To me, Gonzalez is clearly one of the best corners in football this year.
40:52And he's clearly one of the best corners in the AFC.
40:54And he got host, he got job.
40:56So Bedard wrong cattle's right.
40:59All right.
40:59Before we get to a Sunday's quick pick here, uh, check out
41:03Bedard and Giardi over at BSJ.
41:05Uh, 50 bucks for the year.
41:07Uh, they do a great job on, on the Patriots coverage.
41:09Of course.
41:10Uh, you also want to download that prize picks app today.
41:12Use code CLNS, get 50 bucks instantly when you play $5 and then take the guesswork

41:25All right.
41:25Uh, this week's pick.
41:26So Greg is five, nine, and two against the spread.
41:29I am seven and nine against the spread.
41:31I was not on last week, but you can check my solo podcast.
41:36I do.
41:37I had the chargers winning 20 to 13 last week.
41:40So I won that one.
41:41Yes, I won that.
41:42You beat me.
41:43You beat me spread on the year.
41:45So, uh, that's right, baby.
41:46Uh, seven to nine against the spread nine and seven straight up for me.
41:49Greg's 11 and five straight up.
41:51So he's better, uh, straight up.
41:53We got the bills.
41:54Now, of course, this game is for Cocteau.
41:56It's a who the hell knows poop bill.
41:59Uh, the bills are minus two.
42:01The over-under is 38.
42:03I feel like we're going to throw a dart here.
42:05So throw your dart, Greg.
42:07So my dart is it's ugly.
42:11It's brutal.
42:12Uh, similar to Bill's last game as Patriots coach against the Jets last
42:17year, which was just a miserable experience.
42:19At least I don't think it's going to snow.
42:21Um, this time and be frigid.
42:23I think the last time I looked, it's supposed to be sunny and like in the
42:25thirties, um, but we could have a similar situation where it's a Gerard
42:31Mayo's last game as Patriots coach.
42:34Uh, and I think it's going to be all around ugly and brutal.
42:38And I think, uh, I think the bills are going to whip up on the Patriots.
42:43I have no, uh, nothing to back this up.
42:46It's, uh, I'm not watching any freaking film for this game.
42:50I can tell you that much.
42:52Um, I'm half assing it just like the Patriots did their off season last
42:56year and their coaching this year.
42:58So let's all half ass it to finish up the year.
43:02I'm going, uh, bills.
43:0527 Patriots, 10.
43:09You might have acid.
43:10I think week 18 is going to be the entire ass.
43:13This game is going to be ass.
43:14I'm not looking forward to it whatsoever.
43:16I will watch it.
43:18I might drink a little bit more to get through it.
43:21Um, I'm drinking the press box.
43:25Oh, I'm going old school.
43:26I'm going to bring like a flask, uh, just like the old school,
43:29like baseball columnists.
43:31Yeah, I'm going to go bills minus two.
43:34Who gives a shit?
43:35Uh, over, under 38.
43:37I'll, I'll, I'll go under.
43:39Cause you got the backups playing, but who's going to bet this game.
43:42If you're betting this game, you might want to seek help immediately.
43:46It's just, it's, it's brutal.
43:48So I'll go bills minus two.
43:50Nobody cares.
43:52All right.
43:52So the next podcast we do early next week is, I think going
43:55to be a very fascinating one.
43:57Uh, I, I don't think unless, unless something happens stupid on the field,
44:03I don't think we'll spend a lot of time on the game, uh, early next week.
44:07I think we're going to have some, at least reporting about males future.
44:12Uh, will the coordinator still be here by the time we do the podcast, what else
44:17is happening in the league on black Monday?
44:19So, uh, next week we really start to fire things up with the off season and, uh,
44:24we'll see, we'll, we'll see if Gerard Mayo is still a Patriot, uh, by the time
44:28we do this podcast early next week till then be well.
