00:00you
00:30I
00:35Am joined by Robert Griffin the third James White field
00:39Yes, Mina times. Alright, so first play we're gonna look at second into one of the Patriots first offensive plays
00:51What's going on everyone my Catholic Taylor Kyle's here for CLNS media on the Gillette Stadium game field
00:57Here to recap a Patriots
01:00Patriots second preseason game of the season they
01:03Lose 14 to 13 to the Philadelphia Eagles kind of sad kind of upsetting
01:07I tweeted about it as sort of a joke when I was setting up the lead to my my post game column
01:12I thought they were gonna get to 2-0
01:13It looked like they had it there
01:14But unfortunately Nick Sirianni kind of shoved that one down my throat and and put that goes with a two-point conversion
01:21To take the lead and the Eagles win the football game
01:24But regardless I still use that as the lead. I knew I'd get you there Taylor still use that as lead
01:29So we're gonna recap the whole thing again Patriots lose 14 to 13 to the Eagles, but a lot to take away from it
01:34I think mainly main storyline is Drake May so that's where we are gonna start a reminder
01:39We are powered by game time and prize picks head over to game time
01:41Use code CLNS for 20 dollars off your first purchase and head over to prize picks and use code CLNS for a 100%
01:48Deposit match bonus up to $100 terms apply. So Drake May before the game
01:52We talked about it on the pregame show up on the ramps where it was reported by Albert Breer
01:56He would play the second quarter into the third quarter and that's exactly what we saw May
02:02Finishes the game 6 of 11 for 47 yards passing
02:05He also runs for 15 yards on the ground on four attempts and gets into the edge zone on a read option
02:11Rushing touchdown. I thought may
02:13Show that he can compete at the NFL level now taking it all with a grain of salt
02:18Obviously this is against the sort of second team defense with the Eagles
02:22They did rest a lot of starters. Some guys were in there
02:24Some guys weren't but ultimately I thought may behind the Patriots
02:28Starting offensive line for a little while looked pretty good
02:30And I think it warned him some starter reps diving a little deeper
02:34What you saw on the read options from some of his throws overall your thoughts on Drake May's performance tonight Taylor
02:40I thought we saw from Drake May tonight is pretty much what we've seen consistently throughout the summer
02:45You saw the poise in the pocket. You saw a good decision-making good accuracy for the most part
02:49He had a couple of inaccurate balls when he was throwing short
02:52But everything else is pretty much on the money also saw some of the play extension ability now guys couldn't really get open for him
02:58That was a little bit of something that was a little irritating
03:01Yeah, also his stat line does not tell the entire story of this game. He had three deep shots to Javon Baker
03:08Unfortunately, actually the only one that worked was because of a pass interference
03:11I'm actually not sure if it would have been accurate had Javon actually just be able to run the route
03:16But either way two big missed opportunities from Javon Baker. We'll get to him later
03:20Yes
03:20One where he gets bullied to the sideline on what did look like a decent ball from Drake May and then another ball where he simply
03:26Couldn't come up with a ball. That was perfect from Drake May
03:29I think that's the play of the game for Drake 100%
03:32You've got to see the feel in the pocket the way he navigated didn't flinch his pocket presence was one thing
03:37I loved for him in college, but because his line was so bad, you'd often see him drift
03:42He did have some bad habits, but you can see that he had the fundamentals of a good pocket passer
03:46You really saw it there also looked off the safety. That was an issue earlier on this summer
03:51There was a double move where Drake pumped to it and then through and it brought Jalen Hawkins into the play this time
03:56He looked away from the safety then delivered a perfect ball to Javon Baker that unfortunately wasn't caught
04:02But I think today just reinforced the point that Drake May needs to start repping with the ones
04:07I didn't think Jacoby was terrible. I know he got a lot of crap for his interception. We'll get into that
04:11I don't think it was deserved. I still think especially from a leadership perspective from knowing the playbook
04:17Operationally Jacoby Bursett is the guy I'm not saying that Drake May should necessarily be the week one starter
04:22But I think he's done more than enough to show that he deserves to at least
04:26Get the type of quality reps that Jacoby Bursett gets behind the top offensive line and you saw when Drake May was behind a lot
04:33Of the starters he actually looked fine
04:34Then as you started to see those guys leave the field I tweeted now
04:38It's starting to look like the end of joint practices with the Eagles because the line was so bad
04:42He didn't have time to do anything
04:43So overall Drake May huge winner in this one really showed you that like you said he does deserve to be on an NFL field
04:50I think now it's more a matter of when rather than if in the season. Yeah for sure
04:54We mentioned we mentioned pregame where you know 11 10 11 plus sacks in that in that joint practice with the Eagles
05:00But it was kind of hard to count something because of the elusive of loose elusiveness
05:04Excuse me
05:04We talked about and he showed it today again with 15 yards rushing on the ground was able to get a ray
05:09I don't know if he ended up with a first down on one of them
05:11But he had like a six-yard rush to cut it from second down
05:14First down to like second down and six or whatever and one other thing I had about the scrambling is he mentioned in practice you?
05:19Don't really get a lot of chances to scramble because you want to stay in the pocket
05:23You want to see the play through right really? He'll just do it as a last-case scenario
05:26I thought when he actually did break the pocket in Denver did run outside of the zone read honestly where James Bradbury seemed like he
05:32Thought it was Mac Jones in the backfield completely ignored the possibility that Drake
05:35May was just gonna keep it for himself
05:36But I did see like there was one rep of Haas juke where everything was covered up perfectly Mitchell Wilcox was bracketed
05:42So he's like you know what I'm just gonna take off there was another play sometimes in college
05:45He would scramble prematurely, but today you know based on the broadcast angle which once you get the all-22 sometimes
05:51It gives you more context right, but I thought the running was more of a positive than something. He did as a crutch
05:55Yeah, so that's Drake May again 6 6 of 11 11 passing
05:58I think you're right
05:59It doesn't do it justice at all because again that played it that Javon Baker play where he puts it right on the money man
06:04And we'll talk about Caden Wallace in a second
06:06I thought he had a really good night the one play where he kind of I guess fell off a little bit was he just allowed
06:10That pressure to come to Drake Mays right, but may steps up perfectly and basically just flick of the wrist puts it right in
06:17Javon Baker spread basket and Baker unfortunately can't come up with a catch
06:19It looked like if Baker kind of kept running instead of almost trying to dive for it for it that he might have
06:25Completion makes the percentage go up like I thought he was good tonight
06:27I really did I keep thinking of more Drake Mays stuff that I want for it
06:30But I'm sorry just there was a lot of good honestly once we start these shows sometimes you got it like just jog the brain
06:35A little bit it starts. It's free-flowing. This is a conversation. I'm trying to keep an outline here, but realistically. Let's just talk ball
06:40We're just two pals talking football
06:42But another one I wanted to give Drake May credit for and he actually talked about it in his press conference after the game the
06:47Play he play he top two from the top two units excuse me
06:50They only allowed one sack once it got to you know the threes and fours towards the end down the stretch a
06:55Couple sacks of Joe Joe Milton it didn't look on a Tonio Mafia. Yes
06:59Yeah, so a tough look there, but let's again focus on the top two only sack allowed
07:03I thought Caden Wallace looked very good on the right side on the second unit
07:07Darian Lowe wasn't great
07:09He had that one miss
07:10You know the one key miss on the one sack where he had help from Kevin Harris on a chip
07:14I had chip helping for some reason went all the way out
07:18Really should have just basically
07:19Baited the rusher to come inside knowing that if he tried to go wide he would have run right into the back right instead
07:24He basically stayed on Kevin Harris's hip the rusher came inside and you know ate Drake May for lunch and the press box
07:30That was the one time in the press box where everyone was like whoo and like he kind of was a little slow to get
07:34Up he ended up being fine, but overall I thought the offensive line was good the run game looked pretty good, too
07:37Or especially early on reminder Stevenson has 18 18 rushing yards on six carries
07:42So three yards a pop which is you know he earned every single yard earned everyone one time
07:47Me and Taylor looked is there we looked at each other
07:49We were like well
07:49He is like sticking through staying on you know yards after contact like he looks really solid
07:54And I know Barth mentioned during our crossover show where you want to kind of take those
07:59you know those runs off from Andre down the stretch and throughout and hopefully they kind of
08:05Work him you know easily throughout the season so that he doesn't wear down towards the end of the year
08:09But I thought he looked good early, and I think if you can kind of
08:12Manage his workload throughout the season you can get that reminder
08:15Which is on the field today the run games gonna be legit because there were holes and even when there wasn't holes
08:19Ramonder made stuff happen on number saying yeah Ramond Ray's contact balance was fantastic pretty much every carry
08:24He had he bounced off the first tackler sometimes like there was a third in one where he was stopped initially then had a second
08:30effort also some really nice
08:32Work from city so and I believe it was Mitchell Wilcox or Austin Hooper one of the other who helped push him to get
08:37The game, but really liked what I saw from Andre Stevenson
08:40I'd agree the offensive line looked pretty good from the initial viewing
08:43Layton Robinson another strong performance where you see him in the run game don't notice him in the pass game
08:48Which is ideal I?
08:49Will say for Vardarian low and Antonio Maffi because I was tough on them today
08:53And I mean we have to report on what we even maimed about them
08:55I will say if we can use our platform for anything before you like tear these guys apart
09:01Vardarian low and Antonio Maffi are two extremely nice people if you met them
09:06I'm sure like the mean things you kind of want to say online you take a step back
09:10And be like you know what?
09:12Be better at your job a little bit
09:13But you know I don't want to kill you for it because they aren't really nice guys
09:17And it stinks when we have to criticize them, but I even thought the daring low had some good plays
09:22There were a few run blocks where I saw I still kick it over the Dinkleberg for Darian. Oh, yeah
09:26Yeah, that was good, but that's harmless see that's harmless like I'm not trying to go way too far
09:31Yeah, right exactly, but I did think he had some nice run blocks
09:34I think that's one area where Vardarian low when he's on point can be you know a bit of a positive
09:38But this was a game where I think anything he does is going to really be putting in a spotlight
09:43Partially now right everybody knows the name every time the name Vardarian low is tweeted
09:47There's like five quote tweets and someone's saying something crazy about it for sure exactly that's the territory
09:51He's in now and it's unfair that he is kind of being put into position to be a bridge left tackle even though really he
09:57Is more of a backup and should exclusively be that like I think for the most part he was doing really well when he gave
10:02Up the sack. I was so disappointed. I'm like man
10:04I was really saying like look
10:06This is why I think Vardarian low should be the two and not the one
10:09And then there was another play he had the only false start or the only penalty for the Patriots of the game on a false
10:15Start which huge for the Patriots penalties they had six accepted penalties against the Panthers
10:19Also had a ton against the Eagles in their joint practice
10:22So one of the Patriots a ton of credit for that not being penalized, but with Vardarian low and the false starts
10:27It's one thing when you're a Trent Brown or Jawan Taylor and for the most part even though you're gonna get called because all these
10:33Offensive tackles are trying to get a jump off the snap
10:36Still you're not gonna hear their name very much when it comes to pressures
10:39It's really just like alright if you're trying to get a jump usually it works
10:41But for a guy like low who's so inconsistent those are magnified
10:45And I think he's had a false start in each of the past two games
10:47So, you know, I don't want to pile on him
10:49But unfortunately
10:50I did have him a stock down because he had the most negative plays of anyone I noticed on the offensive line and then Antonio
10:56Mafi was no longer the center for the Patriots
10:58We actually saw Liam Thornton L as the last center and actually ended up icing the game because he had a low step to Bailey's
11:05Happy that zappy couldn't recover the Eagles got it and took possession
11:08But Antonio Mafi even at his natural position of guard
11:12Gave up two sacks on three plays with Joe Milton in the backfield
11:16Just not the kind of thing you want to see from a guy who I had is really a practice squad level player who I?
11:21Just don't see how he makes the roster might not even make the prac squad if we're being totally honest
11:25So yeah, those guys were down
11:27But for the most part I did like what I saw from the offense
11:29Yeah, definitely not a great showing from the back end of that offensive line depth chart
11:33We're gonna get into one more stock down on the offense get into the defense
11:37Some special team stuff and then we'll kind of wrap it up with some thoughts in a few minutes
11:40But first a quick word from our friends over at game time. We'll be right back

12:59Alright one last thing on the offense and I want to go we already mentioned it a few times
13:03but I want to go a little bit more in-depth into Javon Baker because
13:06One of the first play of Drake Mays first Drake May and Javon Baker's first drive
13:10They come out basically, you know all rookies and young guys for Drake May with the weaponry
13:14Anyway, it's Jalen Polk Javon Baker Keishon booty and Jaheim Bell by his side
13:19it's really, you know, the the rookie class moving strong and then Keishon booty who's kind of fighting for a roster spot here, but
13:24Drake Mays starts to kind of chug along. He hits Javon Baker
13:27I believe on his second pass attempt if I have it correctly on that dig right you mentioned the high low
13:32Across the middle Baker hauls it in, you know first down what-have-you and then Javon Baker kind of collapses, right?
13:38He he has a may see and I was watching it from the booth because I could kind of see may
13:43Looking on the over to the side because Javon Baker was one-on-one with somebody
13:46Yeah, every time we see Javon Baker one-on-one in the press box. It's either Mike me or um, it is like oh Javon
13:51He's going to exactly and so I see it right and I'm like, there's a safety down the middle
13:55May should try and look him off
13:57May see where he moves and go to Baker and lo and behold he goes there and I don't remember
14:02Who we were talking with or if it was even to Javon Baker or something
14:06But where the Patriots have the lines like on the numbers, you know on the other practice field. They have like the red line
14:12Yeah
14:12So where you're supposed to run if you're running a goal ball to give your quarterbacks in space to drop the football in so that you
14:17Don't basically get bullied to the outside run out of bounds and then give your quarterback. No chance
14:21Well, Javon Baker got bullied out of bounds. He gave his quarterback. No chance. Keely Ringo
14:26former, Georgia defensive defensive back
14:29Basically shoves Baker out of bounds. He gets shoved out Baker goes and the ref throws his hat off immediately
14:35He's not even allowed to come touch the ball because there'd be illegal touching
14:38It kind of ends up falling through bigger sands when he comes back in bounds
14:41But regardless wasn't a good route from Javon Baker then later on
14:46We talked about it to the play of the day Baker
14:49Gets inside. I think that was on Keely Ringo as well
14:52Hits a post and may drops it in this bird basket and then he just drops it
14:56so I kind of summed this up when I wrote about it on my with my five thoughts on CLN's media calm where
15:03This is that kind of showed that okay
15:05This is why this guy was a fourth round pick and not a first round pick right? He has flashes
15:09he has ups he has down so I
15:11Always use the word worried and I kind of like, you know
15:13Kind of go all in and give you an ultimatum when I asked but does that like?
15:17Worry you about Javon Baker kind of moving forward because look this is his first real
15:22NFL game action, you know extended and he has two drops at a couple, you know, frankly bad plays
15:27Like can that ruin his confidence this early? Do you think that you know again?
15:31I don't know if we should be worried
15:32But what I guess what do you make of Baker making them those mistakes in this game?
15:35And how does he bounce back from it?
15:36So today has kind of solidified a lot of things I've seen in camp and I've mentioned Javon Baker
15:41I have been leading the hype train
15:43I'm a big Javon Baker fan, but I also acknowledge that I hold them to a high standard, right?
15:47And in practice, you've seen the things you saw today
15:49We're like Mikey Victor anytime Mikey Victor a really big lengthy corner is up against Javon Baker in the red area
15:56There's been two times where Drake Mayer another quarterback
15:59Targeted him on a fade and Mikey was just so big that Baker didn't really have a shot at even making a play on the ball
16:06You saw that I think today where and also when it comes to being near the boundary for some reason
16:12He'll either jump when he doesn't need to or it's just very inconsistent when it comes to skirting that back line
16:18And that's what we saw today
16:19But I think it was magnified because Keely Ringo
16:22I'll coming out of college was known as a really big
16:25Physical long corner who if he was gonna succeed in the NFL was gonna do it as a bully on the outside
16:30And with Javon Baker, I think he has the skill set, you know on paper to be an ex-receiver
16:36Against most people but you see why he wasn't an early-round pick because he doesn't have quite the size
16:42Length or strength that you want at that position like when you say ex-receivers
16:46The prototype is like six three two hundred and ten pounds, right?
16:49Javon Baker is about 200
16:51But he's like 6-1 and I think those little things make a difference because on that first play where he got bullied out of bounds
16:57You can't let that happen as an ex-receiver and to a point I started to wonder is this even a thing where you know?
17:03Technique wise Javon can overcome it if maybe he just hits his landmarks or like it's the spots right on the elbow
17:08What have you or is this something where maybe he needs to be a Z?
17:11Because I'm starting to wonder if he just doesn't have the skill set at this point at least in his NFL career
17:16To survive on the boundary and I liked him as the best one-on-one matchup guy that they have
17:20But we're not seeing the consistency nearly enough now granted
17:23No one in this wide receiver room aside from maybe Keishon booty has shown any level of consistency where you would say
17:29Hey this guy one-on-one. I'm comfortable going to him
17:32But now I'm starting to think maybe as a rookie Javon Baker should really be more of a Z
17:36Or he doesn't have to deal with as much physical coverage
17:38He isn't near the sideline as often and he can get more
17:41Advantageous releases where he can be physical in his route as opposed to you know
17:45Being on the boundary where guys can get their hands on immediately. I'm glad you mentioned Keishon booty as well tonight
17:49He had three catches for 23 yards the most receptions on the team tied with to Michael Hasty for the most yards
17:55He made a great catch from Drake May who threw an off-target ball to him
17:59He made a one-handed grab. I thought booty looked, you know solids and I put together two pretty good preseason games for himself
18:05I think and is really fighting for you know, that back end of the the wide receiver room roster spot here
18:11I wanted to bring up two more quick things one on Drake May
18:14And one on Jalen Polk where Jalen Polk had two catches for six yards
18:17I believe one of them was for six yards where he went like he basically
18:23Silky smooth like two guys kind of knocked two guys down or knocked two guys around had a couple nice moves there get six yards
18:29and then the other catch was one catch for zero yards because of what I thought was a mistake from Drake man on our
18:34PO where they had two and two on the outside
18:37They did not have the matchup the leverage they wanted but may basically threw it out there
18:42Anyway, Polk had the ball Jaheim Bell was one blocker for two defenders
18:45He could only go to one and then he gets he gets hit right away and knocked out and looking at it again
18:50I initially thought there might have been a run element
18:52Which is where you know a lot of the time you see a play like that and there's some option for the QB
18:55Run for a draw, right? I'm not sure if that was the case because it looked like they were in true pass sets
19:00I'll look again when we see the film but on second viewing I think that it might have been the right play
19:05I'm not a hundred percent sure
19:06I just remember seeing it live and being like why didn't they exploit that guy who ran out into the flat?
19:10So I'm a little dicey on whether or not he made the wrong play or not
19:13Just the first look that like you said though from first look they didn't have numbers out there
19:17You kind of looked like he put Jalen Polk on an island a little bit
19:20But again film review coming at some point probably tomorrow from Taylor Kyle CLS media comm make sure you check it out there
19:25But yeah that that one play where he got the ball out quick to Polk and he was yeah
19:29That was super fun. That was cool. So I think that's it for the offense
19:32We'll come back to kind of everything at the end before we wrap it up
19:35And if you have any more thoughts, we'll touch there
19:37But first I want to do defense because we mentioned again in our pregame show where the Patriots trade Matthew Judon
19:44It's clear. They're going into a rebuild get a third round pick for him
19:48And guys are gonna have to step up in the path in you know
19:51The pass rushing I guess room the edge rushing room coming off the outside inside interior exterior things like that
19:56and the way I wrote about it was
19:59This is a rebuild but the edge rushers don't care because they were all over Kenny Pickett today
20:04They made life hell for Kenny Pickett. They made life hell for Tanner McKee and really
20:09Again, focusing on the first and second units now again grain of salt
20:13The Eagles didn't play much of their starters at all
20:15But it's good to know that they can wreak havoc on a second of second team offensive line offensive line like that
20:21Key on white O'Shane cement as Josh UJ teacher twice
20:24I'll have a sack as a a bold and not so sack as well later on in the game. But man, those are the numbers
20:29That's the stats. That's the overarching. But what did you see from you know?
20:32The guys that have to step up in Judon's absence from what did you see from them today?
20:36So actually I'll start with bar Moore's absence first because Keon white really popped for me today
20:41He lined up on the inside a lot in the Patriots even fronts
20:44It felt like every play now, I think you know, it wasn't always perfect
20:48Sometimes he like lost his balance on one place
20:50sometimes he had to deal with doubles and ended up on the ground, but I feel like he was pushing the pocket a lot and
20:55Without Christian bar more you are gonna need that interior rush
20:58It's as important as it is to have guys who can win on an island
21:01No quarterback wants the pocket in their lap or to have a defensive lineman who they know is gonna be at their feet
21:07Consistently and I thought Keon white did that a lot then Joshua Uche was actually funny. Mark Daniels pointed out
21:12Joshua Uche was the one who got into a fight the only player who got into a fight against the Eagles in their joint practice
21:17And Gerard Mayo said if you were a starter and you get into a fight
21:20You're gonna play the entire game if you are a backup and you get into a fight
21:23You're not gonna play at all
21:24And Uche played a lot more than I think anybody like well into the third quarter at one point
21:29Yeah, he finally did come out. I think Mayo was like, all right, we're not trying to get him hurt
21:33I think he learned is like it's like when your parent says they're gonna like punish you in this
21:36Severe way and then it like some point halfway through the punishment. They poked their head in there like you want some ice cream on out
21:41Yeah, it was a little something like that. You know, I'm saying but Joshua Uche was also compressing the pockets of men as Dietrich wise
21:47Yeah
21:47actually asked him after practice if he expected to spend more time on the edge because
21:52Last season you would usually see him and Keon white in there even fronts for the Patriots or their four down fronts
21:57Kind of pushing the pocket in that similar role not really on the outside
22:01Usually saw Mac Wilson and Joshua Uche in those roles
22:04But in the past two games we've seen a lot of Dietrich wise a defensive end in obvious past situations now
22:10He did give a political answer. I'll line up wherever the coaches put me. I'm blessed to be versatile
22:14I came into the league is one-dimensional and all that stuff. But all that was a takeaway
22:17I had that Joshua Uche Oh and not even Oh Shane's a menace Dietrich wise was above him
22:22Which I didn't expect all of them did a really good job compressing the pocket and making Kenny picket uncomfortable
22:27Keon white again pushing from the middle. It just felt like they were working in tandem
22:31Definitely twice definitely looked like that. Like it was like a well-oiled machine
22:35And Rod Mayo mentioned that before judan he was asked how are you gonna replace this production?
22:40He said in years past we didn't have a Chandler Jones or the Matt judan's of the world
22:44We relied on line games and stunts and we all remember in the second dynasty
22:48Yet Kyle van Nooye Dante Hightower all those guys Harrison for one playoff run
22:53Just looping and stunting inside and giving offensive linemen nightmares
22:57So now I think there's gonna be a lot more that Dietrich mentioned how you weren't really seeing one guy get pressure
23:02You were seeing multiple guys get pressure
23:03So line games are gonna be critical veterans stepping up and being able to build that chemistry so they can work off of each other
23:09But in the effort to replace judan and bar more
23:12I think we're seeing they're relying on some of their guys who may not be the most intimidating pass rushers individually
23:18But if they could all play their roles, I think as we've seen in the basketball preseason games
23:22They can be plenty disruptive
23:23Couple more stock downs on the defensive side of the football coming one stock up on special teams
23:28And I want to loop back around to Jacoby Bursette because we totally forgot to kind of touch on his inner side

24:39All right
24:40Let's hit your two stock downs that we talked about prior
24:44Armand Watts is one and Marcellus dial is the other Watts a guy who even with
24:49The you know, Christopher Ballmore going down Matthew Judd on going down a defensive tackle who really has not seen
24:56But I guess hasn't seen much of the field with the first-team defense
24:59But even when he's out there isn't really doing much. What do you see from Watts tonight?
25:02Yeah
25:02Watts was someone who when he was signed we were thinking was pretty much their Lawrence guy
25:05Replacement is someone who could line up a defensive tackle give you some stoutness in the run game
25:09But really give you pass rush Armand Watts has been in the game late the past two weeks
25:13Yeah
25:14We've seen that with guys like Carl Davis were with Carl Davis
25:16Sometimes it didn't mean as much when it came down to roster cuts
25:19But then there was that one year where he said he admitted he wasn't in good enough shape and he wasn't doing enough and then
25:24Got cut right Armand Watts has again been playing late. Also not making a great impact
25:29I think he had a sack today or was in on a sack
25:31But it was more because the quarterback tried to run up the gut and he happened to be there now you seen guys like Jeremiah
25:37Farms O'Shane Ziminez, they have been dominant when playing inferior competition. I have farms a freaking monster
25:42Yeah, like that dude. Sorry to cut you off
25:45No because like thinking about you know him and his story more like last year where you know on the practice squad up and down
25:50I always go back to the fact that he went to Friends University and then was playing like arena football and all it's like
25:56He is out there like causing legit havoc in an NFL football game that that like trajectory is pretty incredible
26:02and I think I saw a tick-tock the other day where it was like
26:05Someone was like asking the question watch watch NFL players
26:09Can you recall who had like a late career resurgence where they weren't really good?
26:13They played a long time like they mentioned Brandon Graham actually from the Eagles where you know
26:17Yeah, kind of so so early and then boomed late like Jeremiah Farms is on that track right now
26:21He came out early in this game and made an impact. Sorry. That's my rant
26:26Yeah, I've been on farm since late last season and he was also someone I said I wanted to watch coming into this game
26:31Awesome to see him continue to have success. I really think he'll be a big part and replacing Christian Barmore
26:35Oh, but yeah to that point Armand Watts is not someone who's even shown up. You really don't hear his name
26:40You don't notice him around the ball very much
26:42That's a really bad sign for a guy who I thought was really efficient
26:46He's going by the numbers and the tape in a limited role with the Steelers
26:49It kind of felt like okay, maybe with the Patriots with this deep front. He can be a really valuable piece at this point
26:55I'm gonna have him off on this roster projection because he's not showing me nearly enough which is disappointing
26:59So I was excited when he was signed. Yeah now I will
27:02Unfortunately, I'm not gonna give you much of a break for going on a rant because all I have to say is you also mentioned
27:07On stock down
27:09What do you see from him the rookie cornerback out of South Carolina?
27:12Yeah
27:12So corners are positions where I don't like to get too critical right now kind of like offensive lineman where unless it's a glaring issue
27:19You know
27:19Usually the all-22 gives you a better perspective than the live broadcast
27:22But Marzella's dial was in the area on a lot of completion say there were a couple of times
27:27I noticed he kind of got turned around which didn't look great
27:30He was competitive sometimes like there was a two-point conversion where it was just a jet or was a jet pass or something like that
27:35Where he had to chase the receiver across the formation. Those are tough
27:38You've seen John Jones and Marcus Jones like literally against the Eagles in the season premiere actually last year
27:43Yeah, Marcus Jones lost on an almost identical. I should have tweeted that that was I just remember that right now
27:47But find it later and put it out
27:49Yeah, but I saw Marcella's dial at the point of attack a lot or at the catch point a lot
27:53I didn't see him as competitive as I would like to see he did have some nice tackles
27:57That was his strength in college
27:59But again, I'll check again on the all-22 to see if it was as bad as I thought but uh, yeah
28:03It was not a great performance from dial
28:05All right
28:06We'll quickly touch on Joey sly and then we'll loop back around to Cobra said we're at this thing up Joey sly
28:1051-yard field goal tonight. I believe he kicked off. He was the first kickoff for the Patriots. He gets the first attempt
28:17At a field goal as well knocks it through. I think he had another one later in the game from like 42
28:22Yeah, it was like 39 to 42 something in that range
28:25yeah, but so to a 2 of 2 for sly I'm getting sort of the the bulk of the
28:30You know the reps here at
28:32He's gotten the field goal reps and Chad violence been the guy kicking extra points. So what do you make of it?
28:37Is this Joey slides job now? I was gonna
28:39You look at it in in practice. It kind of feels like okay, they trot shot out there
28:44He's the guy I keep going back to a fourth round pick last year
28:47Like that's kind of tough to cut bait with because you just drafted him last year
28:50You just use that draft capital on him. But again, I go back to as well. It was a Bella check pick
28:56It's a new regime. You kind of not that you don't care, right?
28:59But it's snow sweat off your back though. I didn't draft the guy we didn't we didn't screw this up
29:04They made the pick and now we kind of have to deal with it and we have to cut our own losses
29:07But do you think Joey slides are enough tonight that he is now in the driver's seat of that competition?
29:11I've had Joey slide in the driver's seat for like pretty much this entire week. Okay, I think one listening to him speak
29:16I think the fact that he's been around the NFL knows what this is like and
29:2114 minutes the other day didn't look at the Patriots interviews on their YouTube channel and you'll see like
29:26Seven minutes like four minutes five minutes
29:28Joey sly was talking once for 14 minutes to the point where Julia one of the PR
29:33People came up and was shocked that we were still talking to him
29:37He was great about it early listening to him
29:38You can tell there's a certain confidence and a comfort he has in his game because he's been in the league for a while
29:43He said he wants to be a top-five kicker, which you know, that may be a little lofty
29:47But still he's like, all right, you've been in the league. You at least know what that looks like
29:49Yeah, where's Chad kickers can kind of have like those late career resurgence as well
29:55You know, there's time to get better but Chad it's been so inconsistent
30:00I feel like he's kind of falling off lately
30:01Especially even after he had that hot streak where I did have him kind of beating out sly and sly had a bit of a rough
30:07Patch, but as we're getting closer to the season
30:10I just don't know that you can invest in Chad Ryland knowing that Joey sly at least has had success and been an NFL kicker
30:16Whereas as we've mentioned on this show Chad Ryland was so bad last year
30:19He would have been bad for a college kicker right much less the NFL
30:22He was dead last in the NFL in terms of kicking
30:24So I'm starting to think that Chad Ryland is probably gonna end up on the practice squad and Joey sly is your week one kicker
30:29Yeah, I'm with you right now. I'm on the I'm on the slide train
30:32I'm sorry Chad, but haven't shown enough and Joey sly looks good tonight in real game conditions goes two for two kicking
30:38All right
30:38I want to wrap up the show talking about Jacoby reset because we didn't do it
30:42In the offensive period reset goes three of seven on I believe two or three drives that he played
30:47And throws one interception where I'll let you dive into it a little bit more Taylor
30:53But my just you know looking at it a few times
30:56I still think he forced the ball in where he might not have had to I don't think Hooper was very open
31:02Maybe if you threw it a little bit earlier to a spot where only he could get it, but ultimately
31:07Avanti Maddox was it? Yeah, I'm gonna cut the route and
31:11Causes the one turnover for the Patriots today and the Patriots had today on offense
31:15I thought overall Brissett was
31:17Not consistent still knew where he wanted to go with the football
31:20Which we've talked about in our post game or our post practice shows rather where I've said that he understands the offense
31:26He knows who's going where and why and where to go with the football
31:29But there's a like one play where it was a like a sail route slash kind of corner route from Austin Hooper
31:35He was open and he just under throws him
31:37I'm not sure how much of that had to do with pressure because the right side was kind of coming in on him
31:41Okay, and he was throwing as the guy was getting pushed
31:44So I didn't get a chance to ask him. I'll try later this week
31:46I mean regardless it was an inaccurate ball catchable, but still not, you know on the money
31:51So again, we'll look at it. Like you said not on the money. There could be outside factors, but regardless I think still
31:56Knows what he's doing inconsistent throwing the football some accuracy issues and then there's the interception where again?
32:01I don't think it was as egregious as some people made it out to me
32:03I still think you didn't have to put the football there kind of put the ball in harm's way and obviously Maddox on top of
32:08The pick but what did you see?
32:09Why are you saying, you know, don't sound the alarms just yet on the Brissette interception specifically because I know we talked about it a
32:15Couple times in the booth that you kind of wanted to you know, settle settle everybody down a little bit
32:18Yeah, so one I know people were saying throw it out of the back of the end zone. Don't take the shot
32:23It's the preseason these games don't count
32:25I you know, you don't want to give up an opportunity to kick a field goal or whatever
32:28But these are exhibition games for a reason you want to see what you can do
32:32It's kind of just an extension of practice again
32:35You don't want to turn the ball over
32:36But here's why I was kind of irritated that it was making it out that like Jacoby made this horrible decision
32:41First of all Taekwon Thornton everybody mentioned Oh Taekwon was Orton open. Why didn't you throw to him?
32:46I saw during the play that he was bracketed
32:49There was someone on the outside and the inside meaning that wherever he went Jacoby probably shouldn't have thrown him the ball
32:54I asked Jacoby I noticed there was a bracket and then I'll go on to the other part of the play
32:58He confirmed he did see a bracket on the backside. Then you had Austin Hooper running a stick
33:03Not not very convincing. I will say I didn't love the route first of all, but he ends up basically running into Avante Maddox
33:09We've seen time and again this summer in training camp
33:13Jacoby Bursette loves his tight ends in the red zone and if they're covered he'll hit them back shoulder. It's happened so many times
33:19It's on it's almost comical like when you keep talking about Austin Hooper Hunter Henry loves tight ends
33:23No, seriously, right just because they're big targets and he does and they're basically always open the way he sees it
33:28And he puts the ball essentially like it's a rebound where you have leverage on this guy here
33:32I'm putting it on this side of you touchdown. Exactly
33:34It's Austin Hooper who's a massive tight end against Avante Maddox. Who's a slot corner here was the issue
33:39Jacoby Bursette started to throw back shoulder as Austin Hooper tried to turn away in
33:45Scramble kind of scramble drill away from the corner
33:47So by the time Bursette threw the ball
33:49Hooper breaking away gave Maddox enough room to undercut the route and pick it off when I asked Jacoby Bursette about that
33:55He mentioned they weren't on the same page and they actually went to the sideline and talked about the fact
33:59It was a play that neither of them had seen before and these are two guys who've been together in a previous season
34:04So when he said, you know, you just want to work out the kinks
34:07So I have no problem with it. You're trying to make plays with your guys. I like the aggressiveness from Jacoby
34:11They just weren't on the same page stuff like that happens. It's football. These games don't count learn from your mistakes. That's fine
34:17Now at the same time, I thought Jacoby like you said was still very inconsistent
34:21He missed a goal ball to Jalen Polk where Polk actually got a step on his defender late
34:26And that's been a theme for Jacoby when it comes to a lot of his downfield throws
34:30They tend to either hang on him or they're just not really catchable
34:33That's something that makes me nervous because when you see Drake May he has his share fair share of overthrows as well
34:39But I think he's more consistent on those plays. Jacoby also had a decision
34:44I didn't love where he was starting to get sacked. He slipped at the top of his drop
34:48Vardarian low gave up the sack. I don't know how much of that had to do with the slip
34:52I think Vardarian got beat so fast. It didn't really matter. Yeah, unfortunately
34:56But yeah
34:57You did see Jacoby slip on the play
34:58May tried to make a play as he's getting brought down tries to throw it to DeMario Douglas
35:03It looked like underneath but the throw was inaccurate and it's one of those where
35:06Drake May had kind of a similar throw last week where he got intercepted the first time off a deflection
35:11Then he actually completed it. So I didn't love that decision. But again Jacoby understands the circumstances of these games
35:17So I'm not gonna totally hold it against him until the regular season starts, but the accuracy we've seen it in practice
35:22It's been pretty inconsistent lately. That's the one issue
35:25I have with Jacoby's game. He's aggressive what you love to see
35:28He takes care of the football for the most part does a good job walking that line and he operates the offense
35:33Well even mentioned he thought the operation was very smooth
35:35But the inconsistent accuracy, you know, if you're gonna deal with that if Drake may can operate the offense
35:41It's kind of like Hayden Wallace versus Vardarian low where it's like I'd rather watch the rookie make mistakes and learn from him
35:45Then a veteran who is on a one-year deal and isn't part of your long-term plans
35:49So yeah, Jacoby Bursette. I don't think the interception was that bad, but I didn't love the inconsistency either
35:54So then let's work. Let's wrap up the show with this Bursette inconsistent interception
35:59Regardless of your opinion, that's what happened. Turn the football over. Obviously again, you can't do it
36:03You know cancer in the football over that's the kind of mantra in an offensive, you know offensive coaching room
36:08But at the same time mistakes happen regardless inconsistent day from Jacoby pretty good day. I would say arrow up for Drake make
36:15Yeah, what does it mean?
36:16Where do they go from here?
36:18Does may has may earned and should may get those first team reps that we've been all clamoring for this week in practice?
36:23I think you really should yeah, it's it's not even that I don't think I still think Jacoby Bursette probably should be the week
36:29One star is gonna be my next question. Yeah week one start
36:31I still think it probably should be Jacoby Bursette, but at the same time
36:34Yeah, I think that Drake may should be getting reps one
36:37Drive me who actually mentioned I asked him with the offensive line ever affect your decision to start Drake
36:42May he said if Drake may wins the QB competition
36:45The offensive line is not going to deter him from starting Drake may because he will have earned the job
36:49But he also talked about getting quality reps today, which I'm gonna ask him tomorrow morning
36:54If you're trying to get Drake may quality reps
36:56shouldn't that come behind an offensive line that can give him time to actually
36:59Make productive plays get through his reads and be effective rather than running for his life after less than two and a half seconds
37:06So I think you need to start giving Drake may those opportunities
37:08See how he is against a great defense and secondary in the Patriots back end and see if yeah
37:14Maybe this guy really should start because if Mac Jones can start I'm sorry
37:18I know people think Drake may is this huge project the biggest issue with Drake may was his mechanics
37:23Which look significantly improved in his accuracy which again a couple misses underneath, but nothing so egregious, and I'm saying
37:30Oh, you can't play him like I was during the first two padded practices
37:33So absolutely give Drake may some opportunities with the starters even if it doesn't necessarily mean that you're trying to unseat Jacoby
37:39I think it's at the point where you need to make this a true competition
37:42Because I don't think it really has been to this point at least as an outside observer. It's gonna get fun tomorrow
37:46I can't wait to listen to sports talk radio all day 6a 6p Drake May's got a start get to go be out of here
37:53Again, it's that's what these games do right. That's what a game where Drake may is like this you're going for says like this
37:58That's what's gonna. Do it's gonna fire up the masses
38:00We're gonna see it all over social all over you know every freaking blog podcast what-have-you tomorrow
38:06And I think that's it's a health cut
38:09It's a healthy conversation because that's what we want to see and I think Drake may like you mentioned has earned those first team reps
38:14In practice to make it a true closer competition
38:17However, I still think slow play it if you can still try and stick as close as possible you can to that
38:24You know overarching plan
38:26Developmental plan you're sure with van Pelt and Mayo and keep it on the same page don't completely
38:31Speed it up, but I'm sure they also have again. I'm not this whole development plan that we talk about
38:37I'm sure it's not a big binder of you know if this happens to this if this happens to this right, but like a permutation
38:43Like it's like a you know create your own adventure game, but again, I'm sure that I
38:48Guess doctored into it is well. What happens if he kicks, but yeah, and it what was tonight kicking, but no
38:55I think it was efficient
38:56But I still think and I like tonight makes you sort of second-guess and think okay
38:59How can we speed this up a little bit because at the end of the day rookie contract you want to get the guy out?
39:04There he's your number three pick
39:05He is your future and you want to get him on the football field so it's gonna be interesting to see what they do
39:09I would say hold the horses a little bit
39:11I still think Jacoby Bursett has done enough to be the starter of this football team at least for a week one
39:15And then we can go from there also
39:17I want to know what the left tackle plan is because Caden Wallace needs to start getting reps at left tackle
39:21Vardarian Lowe is a really good backup left tackle
39:25I just think it's so unfair to make him a bridge when it's clear that that's not what he is
39:29I can't see how Caden Wallace is so bad that you can't put him out here
39:34Let him make mistakes and let him grow from them when you have a guy like Vardarian Lowe who has such physical such
39:39Obvious physical limitations. There's only so many ways he can win in certain situations
39:44So with Drake May getting some reps with the starters
39:46I'd also like to see that from Caden Wallace because coaches say it's a competition
39:50We haven't seen a competition the past two weeks. It's been all Vardarian Lowe and I wanted to make this team again
39:54I think he provides quality depth
39:56I'd like for him to keep getting to work with Scott Peters
39:58But enough with Caden Wallace is a right tackle on the second offense like Caden Wallace
40:03Whatever Caden Wallace Stonewall the couple guys on the right side today. I mentioned that I tweeted it we talked about it
40:07I said, I kind of had my eyes on him a few times and look you're cross-training right now
40:11So he's gotten reps at both he can he we saw him in those two practices. We talked about the you know
40:16The the July 30th and August 1st practices
40:18I think it was where you know that first five offensive lineman. He was your left tackle and he looked good
40:23So why wait if it's gonna be Drake May get the guy out there, too
40:26I like the way you mentioned it earlier where if guys are gonna make mistakes out there
40:30let it be the young guys and let them learn from it instead of Jacobi reset and
40:34Vidarian low and to score for on one-year deals get the young guys in there at least
40:39You know I respect like walking the line because you don't want them to get bad habits
40:42You don't want them to lose their confidence like I'm we're not trying to be you know hot take talking
40:47I'm also not just like play all the guys started right away like right work them in and see what's exact and if it works
40:52It works, and if it doesn't come back a little bit. Yeah, right exactly
40:56Competition get competition going a little bit so I'm chillin poke. Yeah start channel poke as well
41:01He's a guy who I don't even think I don't think he's a guy who they really need to ease into this thing
41:05Oh, he's pro ready. He's Taekwon Thornton anyway. I'm nothing against him either
41:09He hasn't been bad, but he hasn't done so mean to these guys
41:13You're gonna make me feel bad
41:14Really, I mean I take one's been fine
41:17But I've not seen nearly enough from him where I think he should be playing over Jalen poke
41:21Yeah
41:21I don't care that he is your ex and
41:23Gerard Mayo says he has the skill set because we asked Elliot Wolf before the draft do you have an ex receiver he said do
41:29We have someone who can line up there
41:30Yeah, we have someone who can win one-on-one not really well
41:33Taekwon Thornton didn't become that guy over a few months, so you know even if Jalen poke isn't necessarily
41:38You know Javon Baker in you know best-case scenario. We've seen he can win one-on-one if he's even he's leaving
41:44He's a tough guy at the catch point just give him some opportunities
41:47I'm so tired of this you know we got to throw our veterans out there when KJ Osborne and pop are the only veterans who
41:53Are giving you any reason to have like legitimate confidence the only stats
41:56I believe Taekwon Thornton is notched this preseason are two starts, and that's pretty much it
42:01Oh, he had a target. He had the goal ball where he did have a step in Jacoby over through
42:04Oh, yeah, okay, you're right, but maybe I would have felt completely differently if he catches that inside runs it for a touchdown
42:08I don't know, but actually no I wouldn't
42:11We're on the same page here. I think everyone's on the same page here where the Patriots are at right now so again
42:16Rebuilding continuing the you know the Jude on
42:19Trade for the third third or third round draft excuse me kind of builds into today
42:23We see some building blocks slowly start to pick up steam, and I guess we go from here Patriot
42:28Do you have any last thoughts on tonight's game before we kind of wrap this thing up Taylor?
42:32I think I pretty much hit everything all right sounds good Patriots lose 14 to 13 tonight
42:36At Gillette Stadium against the Philadelphia Eagles Patriots are back on the practice field Saturday and Sunday afternoon
42:43We'll have coverage here on Patriots press pass the honest media comm for all of it. What do you got?
42:47I just heard one thing I wanted to mention
42:49Jaquay Jackson very unfortunate injury just wanted to obviously wish him the best
42:54He was having a strong summer, and it looks like you know it was a leg injury. He didn't return. It didn't look great
42:59We don't want to speculate, but you know wanted to acknowledge it. That was a tough
43:03That was a tough blow for him my fans may not be very familiar with him undrafted rookie
43:07But uh you know he was doing well
43:08He caught the out and up touchdown from Joe Milton last week
43:11I just want to you know again just send our best to him just really unfortunate. He was doing pretty well
43:14Yeah, for sure good good good catch there
43:16I I I missed that in in my several notes on tonight's I missed it when you asked me if I had any final thoughts
43:22So you know best goes our best goes out to Jaquay Jackson, so I'm again
43:25That's our Patriots postgame show Patriots lose 14 to 13 to the Philadelphia Eagles, but a lot to take away
43:31There's thoughts right now immediate thoughts on CLS media calm Taylor. We'll have a film breakdown of tonight's game at some point tomorrow
43:37I assume we'll have coverage drop mail press conference tomorrow practice this weekend all of it
43:42So make sure you keep it here on Patriots press pass rate review subscribe to the channel and until next time
43:46Take care of yourselves take care of each other and thank you for watching us peace out y'all have a good night
