00:40So today is Saturday.
00:44So just to sort of update you guys on what's been going on, where we're at.
00:50So the Patriots conducted their last open practice to the media on Friday.
00:57Very light affair, shells, half speed, really sort of like a Friday normal game week practice.
01:08The haze in the barn, like all that kind of stuff.
01:12So not a ton of stuff to glean as far as any competitions and things like that.
01:21Let's go over sort of, you know, where we see the plan for the commanders preseason finale.
01:26Gerard Mayo told us Jacoby Brissett will start and all four quarterbacks will play.
01:36So judging off of practice, and this is just a guess.
01:40And again, I almost have to preface everything I say about this team with this is a new regime.
01:48And a lot of the previous 19 years that I've spent covering the NFL, I have to readjust things based on my experience and what I saw in practice.
02:01My guess is that Jacoby Brissett is not going to play very long.
02:07I think it probably depends on how long the first series goes.
02:11I'm sure they would like to see Jacoby have a little bit more success than he has shown in the previous two preseason games.
02:18That bar is not very high.
02:20I think judging off of how they split the snaps, I think that Drake May plays more, probably until halftime, maybe after halftime.
02:29A lot of it depends on the number of plays.
02:32What we saw in practice was Bailey Zappi and Joe Milton both split scout team reps.
02:38They didn't get any reps with the normal starters, you know, or even like running their own stuff.
02:46They just ran opposing stuff off of cards like we talked about last time with Nick.
02:54Among the players I wouldn't expect to see much from in this game.
02:58I do think David Andrews will start.
03:00I don't think he's going to play very long.
03:02I would expect Nick Leverett to come in and play, and then Liam Fornadel at center.
03:08Who else?
03:11Ramondre Stevenson, Austin Hooper, who's been dealing with something.
03:16Devon Godchow, Keyon White, Jonathan Jones, Marcus Jones, and possibly Christian Gonzalez.
03:25He didn't seem to take a ton of reps, but it's hard to really judge what they do in the secondaries, really as the defense as a whole, because they really swap those guys in and out.
03:37You can have the first team front seven and scrub secondary players, or you can have all the starting secondary players and scrubs up front.
03:48They seem very indiscriminate as far as how they do things in practice on the defensive side of the ball.
03:55It's not how normal teams do it.
04:00It's not how they do it offensively.
04:04As far as the commanders, it's going to be a lot like the Panthers game, unfortunately.
04:11So Jaden Daniels is the starter.
04:13He's not playing.
04:14Marcus Mariota is the quote unquote backup.
04:18He's been dealing with injury.
04:19He's not going to play in this game.
04:21That means I would expect to see Jeff Driscoll start.
04:28I wouldn't be opposed.
04:29He would be on my sort of list of possible additions to the practice squad as a veteran.
04:35QB has been a bunch of different systems.
04:38Rookie Sam Hartman from Notre Dame and his glorious hair.
04:43We should see a lot of him and Trace McSorley.
04:48One thing I wanted to mention about this game against the commanders is I think the Patriots have a chance to look a lot better in this game than they have in the previous two preseason games.
04:59And it's not because they're going to play most of their starters, and probably Washington will not.
05:05So this is another thing that is a new experience for me.
05:10When Bill Belichick was here, you could count on them doing at least some prep for the preseason game, working on cards, which means that you are going up against some of the offensive and defensive things you would see or you anticipate seeing from your opponent.
05:28Gerard Mayo has not done that at all in the previous two preseason games.
05:34They've pretty much gone in cold.
05:36Now, the Eagles were a bit different because they just practiced against them.
05:41So they saw some of what they did.
05:43I think we heard Drake May talk about that, that practicing against the Eagles made the game a little bit easier for him.
05:51And that's good.
05:53But they pretty much went in cold turkey against those teams.
05:57And that's why I think it looked pretty rough.
05:59That should not be the case this week.
06:02The Patriots did the last three days of practice extensive work with cards.
06:09So now I don't know how much of that is Washington, how much of that is Cincinnati for the regular season opener.
06:17I'm sure there was a little bit of that mixed in, but I would expect the Patriots to look pretty sharp on both sides of the ball because of this preparation that they did for this game.
06:32Maybe we'll talk about that in a little bit.
06:40But first, I want to tell you about game time.
06:43It's that time of year starting to get a little bit cooler here.
06:47You know what that means to me? It means football season.
06:50And football season to me is something that you have to enjoy.
06:54You have to be a part of the experience in person, whether it's pro, college, high school, what have you.
07:01There's nothing like being in the stands for a football game.
07:05And with that, got to find a way to get there.
07:09And for me, it's game time.
07:11The game time app, gametime.co, go check them out.
07:16Game time has a new feature called Game Time Picks that makes getting tickets to see your favorite teams play live even easier.
07:23Game Time Picks filters out the fluff to show you only incredible deals on great seats.
07:28So you don't have to waste time searching through thousands of tickets.
07:32Patriots are playing at the Bengals.
07:37I'm sure some of you would love to see the debut of the Gerard Mayo era.
07:43Just also remember that the Cincinnati football team has a history of slow starting.
07:48Not very good in the openers.
07:50So, you know, if you're looking for an upset, it's not out of the realm of possibility.
07:54It certainly is not.
07:56So make sure you go check out the tickets.
07:59I just booked my flight.
08:01Flights are reasonable.
08:02Go check it out.
08:07I love part of what I love about this app is you get the view from the seats.
08:11I have to have that.
08:12I don't care if I'm going to a concert, baseball, football, whatever.
08:16I have to know what I can see.
08:18Am I going to have a good view?
08:19Are people going to be in front of me?
08:21All that stuff.
08:24So make sure you check that out.
08:27They also have all-in pricing.
08:30Toggle this feature to show the total up front with no surprise fees at checkout.
08:35You know, you've been on other ticket applications, and you're like, oh, this is a good deal.
08:40Suddenly you get there, and there's like 75 bucks worth of fees.
08:44GameTime takes that out with all-in prices.

09:04What time is it?
09:05GameTime.
09:06Okay.
09:07So the other big development this week, at least since we've talked last,
09:13was the offensive line.
09:15Nick and I have done a lot of talking about this,
09:18especially in the wake of the Eagles' practice where they got absolutely steamrolled up front.
09:24We talked about changes that we wanted to see, ideal offensive line,
09:30and there's good and bad parts of this.
09:34Viderian low, sustained an injury.
09:36It looked like, you know, in his torso, oblique, left side.
09:40Those can take a while.
09:43I'm sure a lot of you, including some of my friends on the radio,
09:47are like, oh, thank goodness Viderian low got hurt.
09:49I don't think that's quite fair to him.
09:50I think he's done a nice job.
09:52I was just totaling my pass rush numbers for my sort of year end or camp end review of camp,
10:03all that stuff, awards, superlatives.
10:06It's all going to be on BSJ on Sunday morning.
10:09One of the surprising things, totaling up the one-on-ones through camp,
10:16Viderian low was 12-3-3 in one-on-one opportunities.
10:23Oftentimes, he's going against some of the Patriots' best rushers.
10:27He only lost 16.7% of the time.
10:32That's like tied for fourth, but it's certainly up there.
10:38I mean, the offensive line did a great job as a whole.
10:43I had them winning 107, losing 58.
10:48They only lost 28% of the time.
10:51Now, some of that is against the Eagles, but individually,
10:57I thought the Patriots' offensive line did pretty well in this camp.
11:01And so, you know, Viderian low was a surprise.
11:06He has been a surprising camp.
11:08He's done a nice job.
11:09I know some of you guys remember him from last year.
11:11He's a different cat this year.
11:14And it's doubtful to me that he's going to be ready for the season opener
11:18with that type of injury.
11:19I guess you can't rule it out.
11:21But he has been out, and so the Patriots have rolled out left tackle,
11:28left tackle, Chuck Sikora four, left guard, City So, center, David Anders,
11:33right guard, Leighton Robinson, right tackle, Michael Winnow.
11:39Those of you who've listened to this podcast knows that was my preferred
11:44offensive line for a long time, especially since Leighton Robinson
11:48in the past two, three weeks has really taken a step forward.
11:52And I think I said last week or last podcast that you could make the argument
11:57that Leighton Robinson was the third best offensive lineman at this time
12:02on this team.
12:05You know, I think it's close between him and City So.
12:07I think that Robinson is stronger, as City So talked about to us
12:13after practice the other day.
12:17So is probably a little bit better of a pass blocker at this time,
12:20but Robinson's done a nice job.
12:22Robinson played a lot of right guard in college, so it's more natural to him
12:26than, say, competing with City So for left tackle, left guard.
12:32But I think they're in – I'll be very interested to watch this line
12:37against the Bengals.
12:40You know, Chuck Sikora four is somebody we've talked a lot about.
12:44From what I understand, he wasn't really comfortable with left tackle,
12:48preferred not to play there.
12:51When Vidarian Lowe went out of that practice, it was almost all Caden Wallace
12:54at left tackle.
12:55Chooks didn't even move over there.
12:58But it was nice to see in the next two practices that Chooks was out there
13:02and basically manning left tackle.
13:04I think this is their best path forward.
13:08You know, with – Robinson has been very impressive.
13:12I would say he's right by, I would say, Michael Wenu, David Andrews,
13:16Leighton Robinson, and City So pretty close right there.
13:19So I think this is their best line.
13:25I think that Gerard Mayo believes that.
13:28He said, I would say it was encouraging.
13:30It was encouraging to see that in terms of that unit.
13:34Anytime you can sandwich a rookie between two veteran players,
13:36that's always going to be a benefit for the player and also the team.
13:39We're still trying to figure out that combination,
13:41but I feel like we're getting pretty close.
13:47I wonder if Fiderian Lowe comes back and regains his job whenever that is.
13:52Do they automatically go back to a core four at right tackle?
13:57I don't know.
13:58I think I would leave it as is.
14:01I want to see the game film with Leighton Robinson at right guard,
14:04see how that looks.
14:06And I think Michael Wenu has a chance to be really sturdy at right tackle.
14:09Definitely not his best spot.
14:10Right guard is.
14:12But I think they've had all sorts of trouble running to the right.
14:16I think especially right tackle, right end in this wide zone scheme.
14:21And now Mike's not the fleet is a foot guy,
14:23but we all know he's a powerful blocker.
14:25So if they can get better at that, they're going to be better offensively.
14:30So that was encouraging.
14:34We are going to take a break and we are going to come back and talk about
14:38Drake May, Alex Van Pelt, all that stuff.
14:42It's Greg Bedard.
14:43And I wanted to tell you about prize picks.
14:45Prize picks is America's number one daily fantasy sports app with over 5
14:49million active members.
14:51It's the easiest and most exciting way to play daily fantasy sports.
14:54Unlike other apps on prize picks.
14:56It's just you against the numbers.
14:58All you do is pick more or less on two to six player staff projections and
15:03watch the winnings roll in,
15:05get in on the daily action with your friends and become part of the prize
15:09picks community today.
15:12You can now win up to a hundred times your money on prize picks with as little
15:15as four correct picks.
15:17You can turn $10 into a thousand dollars.
15:22I love this.
15:23I love the games that they have on there.
15:24Some of the, some of the stats that you can pick out.
15:27Like do you think Tyreek Hill will get more than 90.5 yards in week one?
15:33Aaron Jones runs for more than 66.5 yards.
15:37Look up your hot takes with your friends and win real money this football
15:40season.
15:41When you and your crew run your game on prize picks.
15:45Okay.
15:46So where I think we are with Drake may at this time,
15:50we've heard from Gerard Mayo.
15:53We heard from Alex van Pelt.
15:55Gerard Mayo kept talking about a quarterback competition on the field.
16:02While Drake may has gotten a few more handful of snaps with David Andrews.
16:06In practices this week to me,
16:12I don't think it's significant.
16:14I think it was more about game preparation.
16:16Now Drake mays play, you know, I will say to, you know, to reiterate,
16:22I'm sure what you've heard from others,
16:24Drake may since the Eagles game and confidence he gained,
16:28and we've heard people talk about it, whether it's Mayo, his teammates.
16:33That was, that was a big launching pad for Drake may the guy who was
16:38indecisive thinking about things.
16:41It's not really there anymore.
16:43He has the, the, the switch has gone on for Drake may.
16:46And, you know,
16:47I'm not going to get into who's been better and all this stuff.
16:51Let's just say, you know, Drake may has improved.
16:54Is there's a confidence, there's a calmness,
16:56there's a decisiveness about him.
16:59There's a, he's been pretty accurate.
17:01I mean, I, he's looked a lot better.
17:03If this, if this Drake may started camp,
17:06I think we'd be talking about a legit quarterback competition.
17:11That didn't happen.
17:12That's not Drake's fault.
17:13That's not anything to say that, you know, he was, I mean,
17:18he was struggling for a bit to really get traction.
17:22But I think the Eagles game gave him belief that, you know, I can do this.
17:25I can play in this league.
17:27You know, I just got to play.
17:29And I think all of that was a positive.
17:32I think he's certainly carried that into the practices since then.
17:37Jacoby went down, had an uptick towards the end of the week.
17:42He had a beauty pass on Friday.
17:44Again, it was just jogged through,
17:45but I think it was the Jalen Rayguard down the right sideline.
17:48It was beautiful ball, but we need to see it in the games.
17:52Like, I don't really care what Jacoby does during practice.
17:55Like, you know, he needs to start executing in the game.
17:59And I do think we, I think Alex Van Pelt talked about,
18:03like the interception to Hooper and also the third down throw to Hooper.
18:10I wasn't thrilled with Austin Hooper's routes on any of those,
18:13or either of those.
18:15And Van Pelt made mention of, you know,
18:19we had a route issue on the interception.
18:22If we do that correctly, it's probably a walk-in touchdown.
18:25To me, that was Austin Hooper.
18:27Like, because he ran a little, like, stop and go.
18:31And to me, watching the film, and if you're a member of BSJ,
18:35the video's on there, we go over it,
18:38where I think if Hooper nods to the outside
18:41and then cuts across the face of the defender,
18:44it's probably a walk-in touchdown.
18:46But for some reason, he went up the field.
18:48Even that third down throw, where Jacoby was a little bit short,
18:51I do think Jacoby needs to do a better job of getting his legs,
18:54getting a better base.
18:56Some of his throws are lacking energy down the field,
18:59especially at the end.
19:01But I also didn't like Hooper's route on that.
19:03I didn't understand why he didn't go more towards the sideline.
19:06He faded that one as well.
19:08So hopefully they clean that up.
19:10I don't think we're going to see Hooper,
19:12who dealt with an injury, came back.
19:15I don't think we're going to see him a whole heck of a lot,
19:18maybe for a series or a handful of plays.
19:20But Hunter Henry, I will say good news on that front.
19:24He has started to do things on the rehab field.
19:26He's been watching practice every day.
19:29So that's encouraging.
19:31I would say he's on track, if he doesn't have any setbacks,
19:34to be back for the opener, which they need.
19:39But, you know, I'm sure you guys have heard the comments
19:44from Alex Van Pelt about Drake May and about Jacoby Bursette.
19:49You know, in my mind, I think he made it very clear
19:53that Jacoby Bursette is his preferred quarterback.
19:57Now, for how long, I don't know.
20:00And I don't think he's wrong.
20:02And I don't think it's unfair to Drake May.
20:06I mean, we're talking about a guy, Drake May, still in practice.
20:11Under center, he has issues.
20:14We've seen the fumbles.
20:16There's also a lot of bobbles under center.
20:18And Alex Van Pelt made it very clear
20:21that this offense is going to be under center.
20:26I think that's the way they have to win.
20:28Those are the things you have to talk about
20:30in terms of who we're going to play and when.
20:33A lot of it is what does our offense look like?
20:36How are we going to win games?
20:38What do we need to do?
20:39And I don't think Drake May is very comfortable under center.
20:44I think that's sort of the big task now from until he plays
20:49is getting him more comfortable doing that.
20:53And right now, I just don't think he's at a point to be able to do that.
20:57Now, I'm sure some of you will say, well, just go to shotgun.
21:00Do what's comfortable for him.
21:03I mean, you can, but how does the running game work off that?
21:08Is it effective?
21:09Can you do play fakes?
21:11I mean, we've seen the Kyle Shanahan offense,
21:15the Mike McDaniel offense.
21:17A lot of them operate under center.
21:20And this team, because they're limited with their weapons,
21:23they need to make as much space down the field
21:27for their receivers as possible.
21:29And that comes from good, hard play action and play fakes.
21:32And it's hard to do in the shotgun all the time.
21:36It's hard to make a living that way.
21:38It's obvious that Alex Van Pelt is not comfortable.
21:42We heard Van Pelt was asked,
21:45what's holding May back from being the starting quarterback?
21:48Jacoby. Right now, he's our starting quarterback.
21:50The good news is this week we'll get to play everybody.
21:53We're still in the evaluation process.
21:55We have one more preseason game, and our guys are going to play,
21:58so we'll have another chance to evaluate.
22:00Does May have a chance to be the week one starter?
22:03I'm sure. Coach said it's an open competition.
22:06Obviously, we have one more game to go.
22:08I'm sure there's a chance.
22:10But I think, you know, as you go in,
22:12there's still a process for how you bring a rookie quarterback along.
22:15So I think that's important to remember as well.
22:22There was another quote after that.
22:25I think it's just to bring them along.
22:28There are certain things in this offense that Jacoby,
22:31having played in this office, understands some of the tools
22:34that you can use to get you out of certain situations,
22:37pressure situations, things like that.
22:39Drake is still learning, but he has been really impressive
22:42the last few weeks of practice and in the game,
22:45and he's moving in the right direction for sure.
22:48But again, rookie quarterback coming in and playing,
22:51you know, obviously we have Jacoby has tons of experience,
22:54not just in the NFL, but in the system.
22:57I've won games with him in Cleveland, so I really understand.
23:00I feel comfortable with his understanding.
23:02But again, Drake is really pushing.
23:05I don't disagree with anything that Van Pelt said.
23:10Drake's doing a really good job, and he is pushing,
23:15probably more than a body would.
23:17And some of it has to do with Jacoby.
23:20Really, after a good start, has regressed.
23:25Seems like he's pulling the nose back up right now,
23:30but I think that Jacoby can just...
23:36There's a lot that he knows about this offense
23:39and getting them in and out of good plays and all that stuff,
23:42and Drake's going to learn.
23:43And I think the best place for Drake is to watch,
23:46especially with what's going on with the offensive line.
23:48I think the first four games of the season,
23:50they might be trying different combinations.
23:52Vidarian Lowe could be getting back in.
23:55You don't want Drake May dealing with all that.
23:59Let Jacoby deal with it.
24:02Let him take the hits, which I'm sure there are going to be a lot of them,
24:05and let Drake just learn.
24:07He's never been through this process before.
24:10Game planning for an NFL game, scripting for an NFL game.
24:14Just take it easy.
24:17And I don't really care what the other rookie quarterbacks are doing.
24:21People shouldn't be paying attention to that.
24:27A lot of those guys, Caleb Williams, Jaden Daniels,
24:34even Michael Penix, these guys are all older.
24:37They played a lot of college football.
24:39They have a lot of experience.
24:40J.J. McCarthy, before he got hurt, was in a pro system with Jim Harbaugh.
24:46Drake May played two years of college football.
24:48Didn't play a senior year of high school.
24:53Wasn't really trained up.
24:55One thing I have heard is that the report about his footwork being non-existent was true.
25:00What I also heard was he didn't have any bad habits,
25:03so they didn't think that was an impediment.
25:05I do think his footwork's gotten better in a lot of ways,
25:08but under center, there's still a long ways to go.
25:11It just looks odd.
25:13The timing, him coming away, he bobbles some of them.
25:17That's just got to come up.
25:23Van Pelt said, yeah, in our system, we go under center.
25:26Obviously, our run game is a big part of what we do,
25:29and that starts from under center.
25:31I think he's adapted well.
25:32It was foreign to him as he got here, but right now, it looks seamless.
25:36We did have an exchange issue from a snap under center that we have to clean up,
25:40but it's been smooth so far.
25:44I think Drake's doing a good job from where he was after the Eagles joint practice
25:53to where he is now.
25:55It's almost a 180.
25:57You could just tell his confidence is growing.
26:00He's very even keel.
26:02I love that about him.
26:04I think he's very smart as far as football and all that stuff,
26:08and I think he's really, really going to benefit from watching.
26:12I don't really care.
26:15People who say, well, you need the playmaking element, all that stuff.
26:19That's just far off.
26:22Some people complain about the entertainment factors, Jacoby Bursette
26:25and all that stuff.
26:28Okay, say Drake May starts at the midpoint of the season.
26:32Boy, you're not going to tune in to watch that.
26:35I think the Patriots are going to be interesting throughout the season
26:38whether they sink or swim.
26:43Let's see.
26:45What else?
26:48I think that's about it.
26:50The plan right now is to have my final 53 ready to go after the game on Sunday night.
27:02Eight o'clock starts the last game in the National Football League.
27:05That's going to be brutal.
27:07I'm going to be doing some TV.
27:08I'm not going to the game.
27:09I'm going to be doing pregame TV on NBC Sports Boston.
27:12I will be on Sports Sunday after the game.
27:19I will also be on my normal 98.5, the Sports Hub, postgame stint
27:24probably after midnight.
27:29Just one look ahead to final cuts, waiver claims, all that stuff.
27:40If you go over $50 for the year, for the whole year, for me and Giardi on football,
27:45plus you have Corrales on Celtics and Gethin on Red Sox, Hags on Bruins,
27:52we would love to have you over.
27:55I'm doing a member Q&A on Sunday before the game, so any questions you have,
28:00if you're a member, you get them in there.
28:02Every week I'm there answering questions.
28:04Whatever you have, I answer all the questions.
28:09One look ahead, doing my 53-man roster, I would say that where I think positions
28:21that are going to be a priority for them as far as waiver claims
28:24and things like that, I'm looking at offensive tackle.
28:27I'm not expecting them to find a starter, but somebody who's an upgrade
28:30over, say, Calvin Anderson, who I do not have on my 53.
28:34Right now I just have three tackles on my 53.
28:39Looking to claim or trade somebody else who's an upgrade over Calvin Anderson
28:43to be the fourth guy.
28:46A really good defensive tackle against the run.
28:49They're really lacking there, not only as a backup replacement
28:55for Devon Godchild, but somebody just on the early downs.
28:59They don't really have anybody like that.
29:01Edge, if you could find somebody who upgrades you over Ximenez,
29:07I'd be looking for that.
29:08I don't know if you're going to find that.
29:10Would love a blocking tight end.
29:12Really like what Jaheim Bell's done as an athlete.
29:15I think he's going to be good for them.
29:17I would keep them on the 53.
29:20You might be able to get them through to practice squad.
29:22But considering the issues on the offensive line,
29:25I would love a really good blocking tight end to go along with
29:28Hunter Henry and Hooper.
29:32Other areas, veteran QB on the P squad,
29:37we'll see what they can find with running back.
29:41But, yeah, just trying to upgrade the depth.
29:46But that's it for now.
29:48We will be back probably Tuesday after final cuts, things like that.
