William Branham's Training from a Medium at a Spiritualist Camp

William Branham described scenes from inside Camp Chesterfield, the spiritualist camp featuring the medium, Madam Mimi, in Indiana. Using what was later admitted to be stage tricks, the camp featured moving objects by “supernatural” powers. This apparently had a significant impact on Branham, and gave him ideas for his own stage persona.

In a 1947 sermon entitled “Faith is the Substance”, William Branham thrilled his audience by describing his own power to move bracelets hanging from chandeliers from strings. Asking the audience to turn their backs so as not to see how the trick worked, Branham claimed to be able to move his hanging bracelets by faith. This trick was a fundamental part in the formation of the Latter Rain Movement. According to Scott Haas, Branham attempted to teach his father the trick.

This trick was abandoned by later versions of his stage persona, however, and leaders of William Branham’s cult of personality do not attempt to move bracelets in their churches.
