00:00TDN is launching a new series where we take a behind-the-scenes look at some
00:06physical horse country tours here in the Bluegrass area. Our first stop is with
00:10Taylor Made Farm. We're going to take a look at some champions like Nixco and
00:14Serengeti Empress. I love doing tours because everybody in the horse business
00:20it's really takes all our life to do. Day in and day out what kind of work it
00:28takes, how many hands it has to go through before a horse can even get to
00:32the racetrack and be successful.
00:37Duncan Taylor and a partner started Taylor Made in 1976. Basically started
00:43out as one of them had a pickup truck that had pitchforks and $10,000 apiece
00:48and built the largest sales company in the world. The Taylors always wanted to
00:53focus on was it's about the customer and it's about what we can do for the
00:57customer to maximize the value of their livestock. So basically a tour of Taylor
01:05Made consists of us starting at the stallion complex, showing a video of the
01:09Taylor family, what Taylor Made's about, the mission and the goal of the horse.
01:16So here's Nixco in the stall and you know he's not the biggest horse but one
01:27thing that keeps a lot of us driving in this business and love it is you can
01:31ever measure the heart and ability they have until they get on that racetrack
01:36and they prove it themselves.
01:40Breeding season runs typically by rule of thumb from February 14th the sheds
01:47open to you know the middle of June the 1st of July and these horses you know
01:56someone like not this time will have a hundred and fifty plus dates. This is one
02:04of my favorite barns on the farm it's a it's a special place for me because it's
02:07essentially dedicated to Erin and Marie Jones who are basically some of the
02:13first clients Taylor Made had. And we also have one of our most exciting
02:20mares on the farm who won the Kentucky Oaks in 2019 Serengeti Empress. So and
02:25her baby this year is by the Hillandale Stallion Curlin who's one of the top
02:30stallions in the world right now and she loves peppermints.
02:36My favorite part was probably feeding the horses. They're taken care of good
02:42and I think they're really pretty. My favorite horse is Serengeti because
02:47it's Dr. Politi's horse and she's really pretty. So they're not used to humans
02:53upon arrival so this all comes from the training of an area I mean literally
02:58from day one he's brushing you know the head the ears the belly that's what
03:04they're evaluated on is their physical appearance their temperament their walk
03:08and their conformation. It's interesting like you have to make sure like their
03:13legs are straight and their heads are bobbing correctly and it's a small work
03:17than I thought I guess like taking care of them every single day and just
03:21talking to these guys it just seems like they love their job so much that this
03:25is easier it's easier to work when you love your job. Central Kentucky the
03:30Rolling Hills the beautiful farms is things that we take for granted but that
03:35a lot of people haven't seen before. It's very gratifying to have people come up
03:40and share that with you of how much it it was a heartwarming experience for
03:45them and how much they enjoyed it.
