00:00Grade 1 winner and TDN Rising Star Charlton will begin his stud career next year at Hillandale
00:08Farms with a $50,000 stud fee.
00:11We spoke with John Secura on the speedy son of Spicetown.
00:16Charlton I think is the first horse we've had in part of the inception of Standing Stallions
00:22that seems to have every ingredient.
00:27Very proportionate, great hind leg, smooth, just walks like a cat.
00:32He seems to float over the ground without any conformational flaw.
00:36The way he moves is probably something that sticks with you as well as his side profile
00:41and athleticism of frame and appearance.
00:45Spicetown is a remarkably versatile and first class horse so he has all the ingredients
00:51and then his race record is just, he had so many wow performances.
00:55I don't think he ever ran a bad race, he won the Arkansas Derby by open lengths, just
00:59galloping in only the third start of his life.
01:02Very impressive.
01:03He won the Grade 1 7.8 at Sanita, flew across the world with only the one prep race, put
01:10away Nick Sko who won the British Cup Classic.
01:12Obviously a tremendously quality individual and just got beat at the wire.
01:17He's always the horse to beat no matter who would be in the race with him.
01:20I think he's a world class talent.
01:23I think he's very fast, he had speed that could stay and carry and I think he's a remarkable
01:28race horse, like a generational talent.
01:31I think he's that type of horse.
01:44We're thrilled to have Charlatan, it was a long road to be honest when he got hurt and
01:51then he had time off and then he had to start up again and then unfortunately the ankle
01:56bothered him and he was forced to retire.
01:58But a horse of just extreme brilliance.
02:01He's a very well bred horse, he's out of a very good first quite American mare, so she
02:06was Group 1 placed, she's Leafy or a Northern Dancer in his pedigree as well.
02:12So he's replete with Northern Dancer and Mr. Prospector, two significant crosses.
02:18He's by a very good sire, a sire who's sons look like they're going to be very good.
02:25The best way I can validate what I think about the horse is the kind of mares that we're
02:29sending in.
02:30We're sending the Dam of Arrogate, we're sending Gorana, we're sending mares of that quality
02:35to him.
02:36Eclipse Award winning breeders are sending Grade 1 winning mares, Grade 1 producing mares.
02:42Not the norm for most newly retired horses.
02:45We hope he's a significant and breed shaping influence as far as being a sire.
02:50I think he's a horse of phenomenal talent, I think he's a generational horse in terms
02:56of his ability, his conformation, the way he moves.
03:00If you're wondering about what a stallion should have, you come and see him and I think
03:04he has every category in spades.
