00:00In this week's edition of First Things First, now, Randy gave you just a little inkling
00:05of what's going on here.
00:06I caught up with trainer John Sheriffs to discuss the very impressive Maiden winner
00:12Baeza and also John May have taken a little bit of umbrage with me calling him a patient
00:19trainer.
00:20All right, John, we're 12 hours in.
00:28Let me see.
00:29Do you have a bit of a fever?
00:31Is there some derby fever going on here yet?
00:33It's raging.
00:34It's absolutely raging.
00:35Tell us about your horse.
00:38He looks fabulous.
00:39I just stopped by and saw him.
00:40Yeah, no, he looked really good yesterday and he came out of the race very well.
00:46He's one of those horses that, you know, always looks good, right?
00:49He always has a nice coat, which you love in a racehorse.
00:54And the race?
00:55And the race?
00:56Oh, the race was superb.
00:58Hector was extremely happy after the race.
01:00I thought the horse ran really well.
01:03I love the determination and how he stuck to the job.
01:06He's been at times unfocused and a little immature, but, you know, it's getting there.
01:11You're a very patient trainer and you've-
01:13No, why do you say that, Zoe?
01:15Why do you say that?
01:17I'm not patient at all.
01:20I want everything to run as soon as possible.
01:23Okay, well, you started him on the grass was my question.
01:27And the reasoning?
01:29The reasoning was I did not want to leave Del Mar without getting a race into him.
01:36In his training in the morning, he didn't show a lot of speed, so certainly with his
01:40pedigree and his siblings, I didn't want to embarrass him, so I thought, well, I'll put
01:44him on the dirt, on the turf rather, and I'll go long with him, where it'd be more difficult
01:51on the dirt to go long for a time out, so I thought, you know, I'll edge it as much
01:55as I possibly can and hopefully get a nice performance.
01:59Where are we going next, John?
02:00Well, that's a good question.
02:02I'll discuss that with Mr. Searing and then make a decision.
02:07You know, our time is a little short to get a point, so in reality, you know, plays will
02:14determine where we go.
02:16Would he likely stay home?
02:17Oh, yeah.
02:18How can you beat California weather?
02:20Why would you go anyplace else?
02:22What's the matter with these people, right?
02:24Here's where it's at.
02:25Love that.
02:26And yes, why would anybody possibly not want to be in California?
02:37Racing does continue along with the sunshine in Southern California.
02:41Friday through Sunday, we'll have lots of good racing on hand, and we're just gearing
02:46up to the 1st of March for the first racing tour.
02:50Do want to remind you to get your tickets now.
02:52We have lots of great racing, including the Grade 1 Big Cap, the Grade 1 Kilro Mile, and
02:57an important prep towards the Kentucky Derby, that all coming on March the 1st.
03:02So, guys, what did you think about John Sheriff's taking umbrage to me calling him a patient
03:08trainer?
