00:00Hello and welcome to From the South.
00:14My name is Belinda Losantos.
00:15I'm from Teletubbies Studios in Caracas, Venezuela.
00:18Let's begin with the news.
00:34Now we begin with the information.
00:36The first vice president of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela, Diosdado Cabello, informed
00:41that the opposition received more than $1.8 billion from the United States Treasury Department
00:47alone.
00:48During his TV show, Cabello pointed out that not only the USAID financed the Venezuelan
00:53extremist opposition, but it also had funding from the Treasury Department in Washington.
00:59He also assured that in the presidential election of July 28th, the government of the United
01:04States financed the political parties of the extreme right for their destabilization campaigns
01:10against the country.
01:12In the sense, the political leader ratified his denunciations to the extreme right for
01:16receiving financing from the USAID to attempt against the peace of the country.
01:23This is worth gold with this cover.
01:38This is worth gold.
01:40Here is the source of financing, who they gave money to, and it is not the United States
01:46Agency for International Development.
01:49This hurts more to the American citizens because it is the Treasury Department.
01:55The proofs are at your disposal.
01:57I am going to read some of them.
01:59Here you have them.
02:00More than $1,800 million delivered.
02:10We continue in Venezuela as political parties are preparing for the parliamentary and state
02:15elections to be held on April 27th.
02:18This is the case of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela, which together with its leadership,
02:22militants and supporters will define its candidates from the grassroots.
02:25Leonardo Urieta tells us more.
02:29The United Socialist Party of Venezuela installed its Congress to define the strategy with which
02:35the bases will elect their candidates for the elections, in conjunction with the people,
02:40the communes and the social movements.
02:45All this is the people.
02:47It is participatory democracy and the expectations are to build solidity, true democracy, not
02:52the democracy of the elites.
02:54The decisions that will surely strengthen the revolution will strengthen the Venezuelan
02:58state.
02:59The PSUV is the largest party in the country and is committed, once again, to upholding
03:09principles such as gender equality and promoting a central role for the new generations.
03:16Venezuela has a woman's name and therefore women must occupy the spaces they deserve
03:20because the work, the commitment, the loyalty that we put into all the projects we are entrusted
03:25with allows us to emerge victorious.
03:28The protagonist participation of our people and their youth is a co-participant of this
03:35beautiful dream of this world that we are about to build.
03:43President Maduro, as the main leader of the PUSV, explained the importance of the participation
03:48of young people in politics and the general objectives with which they will work in this
03:52new electoral campaign.
03:58No one knows more than anyone else we are all equal.
04:03In the brotherhood of a dream of building a beautiful Venezuela, a free Venezuela.
04:12For militants and leaders of the PSUV, the participation of the democratic opposition
04:17sectors in this process is a sign of the soundness of the institutions.
04:23There are two types of opposition.
04:25There is the loyal opposition and the opposition disloyal to democracy.
04:29Here in Venezuela they are very marked.
04:31We have an opposition that has been constituted loyal to the rules of the game that are in
04:34our constitution and we have an opposition that has tried to access power outside the
04:38rules of democracy.
04:43Opposition parties that have disassociated themselves from the actions of the extreme
04:47right reiterated that they will comply with all the processes for their participation
04:51in the next elections.
04:55When the fourth phase of the 93 that have been published by the electoral power is in
04:59progress, today we can say that formally and officially, our political organization is
05:11participating in each one of the phases that are included in this electoral chronogram.
05:16277 deputies to the National Assembly will be elected in these elections.
05:23In addition to 24 governors, citizens over 18 years old are called to vote.
05:28We go now to Colombia as army troops have clashed heavily with the National Liberation
05:39Army, the ELN, in the northeastern department of Norte de Santander.
05:43The Minister of Defense, Iván Velázquez, has confirmed that the fighting is taking
05:48place in the rural area of Lourdes.
05:51According to the office, one member of the Juan Fernando Porras Front was neutralized
05:56and at least two have been captured, reporting also the seizure of arms and ammunition.
06:01The operation is being carried out jointly with the Air Force, the National Police and
06:06the Attorney General's Office and is aimed at taking control of Catatumbo and neutralizing
06:12the criminal actions of the guerrilla group, according to the defense office.
06:21Now, we have a short break coming up, but we'll be right back.
06:26Stay with us.
06:48Welcome back to From the South.
06:49We continue with more information.
06:52In Argentina, the far-right government of Javier Milley announced the modification of
06:56the Gender Identity Law, three days after the people protagonized a massive federal
07:00march for diversity and against fascism.
07:03Precisely, the spokesperson of the presidential office, Manuel Adorni, informed that the government
07:09will ban hormone treatment and adaptation for minors younger than 18 years old.
07:16As the law currently stands, it is the minors' parents who might make such a decision.
07:21Adorni did not clarify if this modification will be enforced via decree or with the new
07:27law through the Congress.
07:36In Peru, transportation workers went on strike in rejection of the management of the Ministry
07:41of Transportation and Communications.
07:43The protest, which brings together unions and other social organizations, demands improvement
07:49works on the rough access roads to the city.
07:52At the same time, the National Transport Workers Alliance ratified the decision to paralyze
07:57work in Lima in protest against the murders of dozens of transport workers for refusing
08:03to pay quotas to extortionists.
08:06In this sense, the president of the organization assured that 20,000 urban service buses will
08:12participate in the protest and will march from the popular peripheral neighborhoods
08:17to the center of Lima.
08:19He indicated that small businessmen from the large textile production and commerce zone
08:23of Gamarra will also join the protest.
08:33We go now to Ecuador, as the government has ordered the reinforcement of police control
08:38in the run-up to Sunday's presidential elections in this fight against drug trafficking.
08:44On Monday, President Daniel Navarro ordered the militarization of the country's ports,
08:48with Navy personnel patrolling the access channel to the Gulf of Guayaquil.
08:54According to the head of state, the objective is to guarantee national security in the event
08:58of any destabilizing event and to prevent the trafficking of arms and drugs during the
09:03election process.
09:05Navarro also ordered to increase military presence on the borders with Colombia and
09:09Peru, and to close the border passages between next Saturday and Monday.
09:15It is important to note that this is the first time that borders will be closed during elections.
09:28By mandate of the Joint Command of the Armed Forces, we have been ordered to militarize
09:33the ports.
09:35In compliance with this order, the Ecuadorian Navy, through its Coast Guard command, has
09:40intensified its controls at sea, especially of merchant ships docked in the main ports
09:46of Guayaquil.
09:48We continue in Ecuador, as the President of the National Electoral Council, Diana Atamayn,
09:53confirmed the complaints against candidates to the Assembly for the National Democratic
09:58Action Movement.
09:59According to Atamayn, there is a complaint for electoral infringement for use of public
10:04funds against candidate Yadira Valles and another candidate of the movement National
10:09Democratic Action for a similar act.
10:11Atamayn also referred to the campaign of candidate Daniel Novoa amid accusations against the
10:17National Electoral Council for not pronouncing on alleged violations, adding that if the
10:22infraction were proven, it would even be a criminal case.
10:26More than 13.7 million Ecuadorians will go to the polls in a context marked by power
10:32struggles and a polarized scenario.
10:42Meanwhile in Guatemala, the visit of the U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, was rejected
10:48by protesters who described it as an attack on national sovereignty since, among other
10:52measures, the Central American country committed to detain migrants with the objective of reaching
10:58the United States.
10:59Let's see.
11:04The visit of the United States Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, to Guatemala has been
11:09denounced as a new attempt to interfere in the region by the Guatemala chapter of the
11:13anti-fascist international.
11:16In the first place, we must consider that the mere presence of Marco Rubio in Guatemala
11:22is an attack against the sovereignty of the country.
11:24I can tell you that once the United States puts its hands on other countries, it is not
11:29to help.
11:33Protesters remind Marco Rubio of the dark legacy left by the United States in 1954 when
11:38he orchestrated the overthrow of President Jacobo Arbenz, who inherited inequality and
11:43injustice in Guatemala.
11:45Let us remember that Guatemala was invaded in 1954 by American imperialism.
11:53We know perfectly well what a military invasion of our country is.
12:01Officials from both countries assure that the visit is diplomatic, focused on dealing
12:05with migration, the fight against drug trafficking and other strategic alliances.
12:10We believe in a new migration model that allows us to efficiently and humanely address the
12:17phenomenon of migration, promoting solutions to the causes that have forced so many Guatemalans
12:23to leave their communities, their families, their country.
12:31The country's president ruled out having discussed the safe third country category.
12:36Some protesters do not rule out that it could have been part of one of the imperialist impositions.
12:42We reject the fact that Guatemala assumes this commitment as a safe third country, not
12:47because we are against our Latin American brothers, but because there are simply no
12:51conditions not even for the Guatemalan population.
12:58The protesters claim to be aware of the historical burden and the current context, which demand
13:04respect for national sovereignty and an evolution in policies that are negatively impacting
13:09the most disadvantaged.
13:15Now we have a second short break coming up, but we'll be right back, so don't go away.
13:34Welcome back to From the South.
13:48We continue now with the Middle East.
13:50The Minister of Foreign Affairs of East Virginia, Ansar, announced on Wednesday that the country
13:54will leave the United Nations Human Rights Council following the steps of the U.S. administration.
14:00The minister accused the Human Rights Council of making efforts to demonize the Tel Aviv
14:05regime by passing over 100 condemnatory resolutions.
14:09The Israeli withdrawal comes amid recent international pressure aimed at holding the Israeli authorities
14:15accountable for the genocide in the Gaza Strip.
14:19Meanwhile, on Wednesday, the Israeli occupation army continued its aggression against areas
14:32and camps in the northern occupied West Bank.
14:36The new aggressions affected the towns of Yenin, Tulkan and Tuvas with attacks of Palestinian
14:41citizens and the destruction of homes and the infrastructure of regions and camps.
14:47The Zionist troops carried out detonations in residential blocks in the Yenin camp, as
14:52well as the burning of houses and the detention of thousands of Palestinians.
14:57Furthermore, the Israeli occupation transformed the city of Tulkan and its camp into military
15:02barracks and forced 75% of the population to move, according to Palestinian media.
15:09In total, 30 people were martyred in the attacks.
15:17Now, we go to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as the number of people killed
15:23in clashes in the city of Goma has risen to 2,900, according to the United Nations.
15:29The organization has declared that the battle for the key town of Goma, which the M23 and
15:35Rwandan troops seized last week, has left at least 2,900 dead, far higher than the previous
15:41figure of 900.
15:43In this context, Bibi Mbandeper, deputy head of the UN peacekeeping mission in the Democratic
15:48Republic of the Congo, stated that so far 2,000 bodies have been collected from the
15:54streets in recent days.
15:56The UN official also said that prices had more than doubled and that decomposing corpses
16:02were still being found in certain areas.
16:04She added that the freeze of the U.S. aid threatened to hamper the work of humanitarian
16:10partners in the region.
16:13Yes, our latest assessment, and these numbers come from the country team, who are actually
16:19actively helping the M23 collect bodies and give them as decent a burial as they can manage,
16:29is that so far 2,000 bodies have been collected from the Goma streets in recent days, and
16:35900 bodies remain in the morgues of the Goma hospitals.
16:39We do not think that this is, that number would not go up.
16:43We expect this number to go up.
16:46And as thousands gathered in New Zealand's north to celebrate the international Maori
16:51protest are taking place across the country.
16:54On Wednesday, the eve of the holiday, hundreds of Maori protesters staged a silent demonstration
17:00by turning their backs on government ministers.
17:03The National Day marks the 1840 Treaty of Waitangi between Maori chiefs and colonising
17:10British troops, widely seen as the birth of modern New Zealand.
17:14This year's commemorations come at a time of increased tensions as the government pursues
17:18policies considered by some to be anti-Maori, including a bill which would reinterpret the
17:24Waitangi Treaty.
17:26More than 80,000 people were expected to travel to Waitangi, including Prime Minister Christopher
17:31Lukeson who was criticised for avoiding the event and attending an event in the South
17:37Island.
17:49And in Morocco's tourist hub of Marrakech, a contemporary African art fair has energised
17:54the local creative scene.
17:56The annual 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair has drawn collectors, curators and art enthusiasts
18:04from across the world, showcasing works from 30 galleries spanning 14 countries, both
18:10African and European.
18:12Named in reference to Africa's 54 countries, the fair was launched in London in 2013, before
18:18expanding to New York in 2015 and Marrakech in 2018.
18:23Among the works exhibited were those of the Ethiopian experimental photographer Magder
18:29Haliselet Terese and Sudanese-Somali ceramist Dina Nursati.
18:34Figurative paintings also marked a strong presence with pieces from Nigerian painter
18:39Shigo Tiobi and Ghanaian artist Achei Taiwa.
18:49For Gallery 38, it's very important to be present at this fair because first and foremost,
18:56it's a fair that puts the spotlight on artists from the African contemporary scene.
19:01As it happens, we've been a player from the outset who really wants to promote the African
19:06contemporary scene.
19:08So on the one hand, we're completely aligned in terms of our objectives and on the other
19:13hand, our participation in this fair enables us to meet a public that we don't necessarily
19:18have access to all year round.
19:26So it's a platform that is perhaps the first platform that has internationally exhibited
19:31artists from the African continent and the African diaspora.
19:36So we started in London in 2013, where we launched the first edition of 1 to 54 London,
19:43and we continued after we realized that there was a real interest, a real commitment, and
19:48interest in contemporary art from Africa and the African diaspora.
19:53We thought we had to try and accelerate the inclusion of all these artists in the global
19:58world, in the art world in fact.
20:03And like this, we have come to the end of this news brief.
20:05You can find these and many other stories on our website and also join us on our social
20:10media.
