00:00President Nicolás Maduro and Executive Vice President Delsi RodrĂguez denounced the destabilizing
00:16actions of oil company ExxonMobil against Venezuela.
00:24Argentine lawmakers filed on Monday a criminal complaint against President Javier Milley
00:29for the signing of an emergency decree of agreement with the International Monetary Fund.
00:37An Ukrainian and US officials are holding talks in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia,
00:42focused on a minerals deal and ending the fighting with Russia.
00:51Hello and welcome to From the South. I'm Alejandra GarcĂa from
00:54Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba. We begin with the news.
01:10Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, during his program with Maduro Mass Press,
01:15supported the denunciation made by the Executive Vice President Delsi RodrĂguez on Monday against
01:20ExxonMobil. Evidence of the payment of lobbying by the transnational ExxonMobil,
01:26which operates illegally in underlimited waters in favor of the government of Guyana,
01:31was produced so that the US government would suspend the operating license of the oil company
01:37Chevron in Venezuela. The head of state also revealed that these documents have arrived
01:42with sufficient material evidence and elements. He recalled that Chevron has more than a century
01:48of oil operations in Venezuela and this company has shown that it wants to invest and has done so
01:55and has reached a good level of growth together with the Venezuelan state
01:59in accordance with the laws and the Bolivarian constitution.
02:05So ExxonMobil is right at the center of this operation of vengeance against the people of
02:10Venezuela, an operation also of persecution and to exterminate the US company Chevron.
02:21So it is a fight that they have over there in the States and there are a lot of components
02:26in this conspiracy against Venezuela, against the economy, against the territory of sea
02:35and specifically against the very productive investment that Chevron has today in Venezuela.
02:40I've said this before, Chevron has more than a hundred years in Venezuela.
02:47They wanted to invest and they began to invest and to grow and they have reached a great level
02:55of development and growth alongside the Venezuelan state, according to the law,
03:00according to the constitution. Now they shot themselves in the foot
03:09by delivering this hit, Chevron, with the objective of doing harm to us. But I can tell you right now
03:15they are not doing any harm to us because Venezuela is going to continue moving forward
03:20and this year we're going to grow in all aspects of the economy.
03:24The executive vice president of Venezuela, Adelsi Rodriguez, unveiled on Monday a document that
03:29evidences ExxonMobil's lobbying efforts against oil subsidiaries in the Latin American nation.
03:35In her remarks, Rodriguez informed that ExxonMobil paid a lobbyist to have Chevron expelled
03:41from Venezuela. Furthermore, the high official denounced how the company has been conspiring
03:46against the nation for over a decade in complicity with the government of Guyana,
03:51seeking to undermine its economic stability. In this regard, the executive vice president
03:57stressed that Guyana is not a victim but a protagonist who has been playing its role
04:02against the Bolivarian nation. In addition, Vice President Rodriguez condemned the unilateral
04:07coercive measures imposed against the country with the aim to impact the oil sector in spite
04:13of the negative consequences they would have on the Venezuelan population. Rodriguez also denounced
04:18the involvement of the far right in this matter, which has done everything possible to damage the
04:23country's economy and stability.
04:33These ideologists produced a document. That is this document. What was the purpose of this
04:40document? To influence the decision-makers and the authorities of the United States
04:46administration in order to say that more sanctions not only, obviously, cause great
04:51economic suffering in the population, but also generate possibilities of regime change.
04:59If you see here, because they refer to something that is a lie,
05:04they say that a period of humanitarian measures in favor of Venezuela, in the years 2016,
05:142020, 74% of the unilateral coercive measures against Venezuela are concentrated.
05:22On Monday, during the session of the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs in Vienna,
05:28Austria, the Government of Colombia requested the expulsion of the coca leaf from the list
05:33of the most harmful substances. Colombia's proposal is part of the drug policy reformulated
05:39by President Gustavo Petro since his arrival to power in 2022 as the country's first leftist
05:45president and which aims to leave behind prohibitionism. Colombia has asked the
05:51Commission on Narcotic Drugs since 2023 to review the current classification of the coca leaf,
05:57proposing to remove it from the list of the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs,
06:03which applies control measures and prohibits its cultivation.
06:07Today, from Vienna, before the United Nations, we proposed to exclude the coca leaf from the
06:12list of harmful substances. This is determined by the fact that science has studied and has
06:17explored the industrial uses of the coca leaf, its use in fertilizers, in beverages,
06:21and in other aspects. Coca leaf is not cocaine. We are not betting on the legalization of cocaine.
06:28Argentine lawmakers filed on Monday a criminal complaint against President Javier Millet for
06:33the signing of an emergency decree D.N.E. of agreement with the International Monetary Fund
06:39IMF. The head of state disclosed the decree aimed at cancelling non-transferable treasury bills
06:46held by the central bank, a measure with which he intends to avoid passing the
06:52Treasury bills held by the central bank, a measure with which he intends to avoid passing
06:57through Congress anything that implies increasing the foreign debt. With only four agreements,
07:03the D.N.E.U. grants the Office of Economy the power to apply the necessary instruments to
07:09comply with the Fund's requirements. In this context, analysts and experts have
07:13qualified the document as nonsense that does not withstand the slightest analysis.

07:51Welcome back from the South. The Alliance of People United for the Life of Panama announced
07:59on Monday a plan of action in the face of the threats from the United States and interjection
08:04of the proposed reforms to the Social Security Fund. The activities will begin with picketing
08:10outside the National Assembly, as well as leafletting and marches in different parts
08:15of the country. The Unionist organizations assure that Panama is going through very complex times
08:21and it is necessary to be united to face the ambitions of the President of the United States,
08:26Donald Trump. They also added that it is necessary to suspend the project of reforms
08:32to the Social Fund, as well as the claims of the Rio Indio Dam,
08:36the reopening of the mine and the increase in the subway fare.
08:45In 2019, during his first term, Donald Trump suggested buying Greenland and many people
08:50thought it was a joke. Now, with his return to the White House, his renewed interest in
08:55the island has generated tensions globally. Let's take a look at some details.
09:02People initially thought US President Donald Trump was joking when he first suggested buying
09:08Greenland in 2019, but it's now becoming clear that he wasn't. Trump has doubled down on his
09:13interest in Greenland since returning to the White House in January as part of his controversial
09:18United States first foreign policy platform.
09:24This is the same policy that includes demanding that Ukraine hand over mineral rights in exchange
09:29for continued military aid, threatening to take control of the Panama Canal and suggesting that
09:34Canada should become the 51st US state. But what is it about this island that makes Trump so
09:41interested? Greenland remains at the center of the debate over global trade and security,
09:47and Trump wants to ensure that the US controls this mineral-rich country,
09:51which guards the Arctic and the North Atlantic approaches to North America.
09:56As climate change continues to thin the Arctic ice and is likely to create a northwestward passage
10:01for international trade, this has reignited competition with several countries for access
10:06to the region's mineral resources. Also, because of where Greenland is, just off the northeastern
10:12coast of Canada, with more than two-thirds of its territory lying within the Arctic Circle,
10:17it has been crucial to the defense of North America since World War II.
10:22In Greenland, there are large deposits of important rare earth minerals on the island
10:27that are needed to make everything from computers and smartphones to batteries,
10:31solar and wind technologies that will power the transition away for fossil fuels.
10:35The US Geological Survey has also identified potential offshore deposits of oil and natural
10:41gas. Greenland is the world's largest island, 80% of which lies above the Arctic Circle,
10:49and it's home to about 56,000 mostly Inuit people who until now have been largely ignored by the
10:55rest of the world. At the moment, Greenland is a self-governing territory of Denmark,
10:59a longtime US ally that has made it clear it rejects Trump's plans to buy the country.
11:04Denmark has also recognized Greenland's right to independence at a time of its choosing.
11:09To further enhance our national security.
11:13It is clear the hegemonic character of this second term of Trump,
11:16where even many of his allied countries are being affected by decisions that affect their economies,
11:21and that point to the United States as the main actor in this process,
11:25looking only for its own benefit at any cost.
11:28The Panama Canal was built by Americans for Americans.
11:39Guatemala's authorities have informed that the volcano of fire is returning to its normal
11:50parameters. So this Tuesday, regular activities will resume, but the alert will be maintained.
11:56The eruption began overnight on Monday, the volcano spewing gas and ash far into the sky
12:02for eight hours straight. Authorities had to close nearby schools and key road-linking
12:08communities. Police and soldiers also blocked trails leading to the volcano to prevent tourists
12:14from accessing the area. The volcano of fire and the nearby Acatenango volcano are among
12:20Guatemala's most visited tourist destinations. The biggest danger from the volcano is lahars,
12:25a mixture of ash, rock, mud and debris that can bury entire towns.
12:33We need that it does not become common and normal that we live in high-risk areas,
12:43and then we think that it will not happen to us. We go to live on the slopes of the volcanoes,
12:48on the banks of the ravines,
12:56on the banks of the rivers, and we think that nothing is going to happen to us.
13:00And I think that if we are aware that we live in a very rich country,
13:04but that also has many threats, we have to learn to live with that country.
13:09We have to learn to live with nature and take the necessary measures to prevent,
13:14mitigate, and learn to face those risks with which we live.
13:31In Cuba, a women's concert was held up with the tres, a national musical instrument,
13:36as the protagonist during the Women by EIEFE festival.
13:39Let's see more details with our correspondent Fabiola LĂłpez.
13:47With great skill, three female musicians gave a concert playing the tres,
13:51a national musical instrument made up of three orders of double strings.
13:55Demonstrating their skill and mastery during the Women by EIEFE festival held in Havana,
14:01which coincided with the celebration of International Women's Day.
14:04Although this instrument has traditionally been related to men,
14:08these Cuban women sent a message of empowerment by pointing out
14:12that more and more women are becoming part of the music scene throughout the country.
14:16Whenever a woman becomes a member of one of these orchestras,
14:19of these traditional ensembles, there will always be the question of how well she will do it,
14:24how well she will fit into the style, will she have the concept,
14:27or will she be at the same level as the rest of the members who are men?
14:35We are fighting for that, so that women also have their own space and their own concepts.
14:40And that they get rid of the idea that you touch male,
14:43or you touch female to see if it's right or wrong.
14:51The tres is smaller than a traditional Spanish guitar.
14:53Its first references date back to the end of the 19th century,
14:56and it is said that it emerged in the east of the island,
14:59although some experts also affirm that the instrument was brought from Spain at the same time.
15:03At present, the tres is considered to be the most popular instrument in the world.
15:08It was brought from Spain at the same time.
15:10At present, training in the tres is taught throughout the country
15:12at all three levels of musical education, with a large number of women among the student body.
15:22I had never seen a tres before, only on television.
15:25Studying the instrument and daring to do what few women have dared before
15:28has made my life have a different flavor.
15:30During the Women by AYIF festival, the three artists also offered a workshop
15:34with other women interested in this musical instrument,
15:36where they shared their experiences in their training
15:38and their contribution to the cultural identity of Cuba.

16:26Welcome back to From the South.
16:38Ukrainian and U.S. officials are holding talks in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia,
16:42focusing on mineral deals and ending the fighting with Russia.
16:47The talks will be the most senior meeting between Ukrainian and U.S. officials
16:52since a disastrous White House encounter on Feb. 28,
16:56when U.S. President Donald Trump publicly berated Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
17:02Earlier today, with just a few hours ahead of the meeting in Saudi Arabia,
17:07at least three people were killed in a Ukrainian drone attack on Moscow
17:11that damaged multiple buildings and temporarily shot down airports.
17:15Ukrainian officials say the attack should encourage Russian President Vladimir Putin
17:20to accept the proposals Kaif plans to present at the Jeddah talks.
17:29On Tuesday, Russia's air defense forces neutralized 337 unmanned aerial vehicles,
17:35UAVs, coming from Ukraine.
17:37According to the Russian Ministry of Defense,
17:40this drone attack is the largest one carried out by Kaif so far in 2025.
17:45The highest number of downed drones was registered in Kursk province with 126,
17:51while Moscow, the capital of the country, was threatened by 91 drones.
17:56The Investigation Committee of Russia opened a terrorist attack inquiry
18:00due to the massive attacks on the Moscow region.
18:16Israel has intensified its attacks against Syria,
18:26targeting the headquarters of the 90th Brigade and the armored battalion in Quneitra.
18:32Following the airstrikes in Quneitra,
18:34Zionist infantry infiltrated the areas of Marije, Kriz, Al-Wawi and Kuje in southern Syria.
18:41Additional targets included the headquarters of the 89th Brigade in the Jabab region
18:46and weapon depots of the 12th Brigade near Esra.
18:50It has been reported that the Zionist occupation forces also attacked the
18:54headquarters of the 68th Brigade in the suburbs of Damascus.
18:59Since the fall of Bashar al-Assad's government in December,
19:02Israel has expanded its occupation of the Golan Heights,
19:06ceasing the demilitarized zone which violates the 1974 disengagement agreement with Syria.
19:16The leader of Yemen's Ansar Allah movement, Sayyed Abdullah Malik Badr Bin Adhuti,
19:23has issued an ultimatum to Israel,
19:25warning that the armed forces are ready to take military action
19:29if the siege on Gaza is not lifted.
19:31This ultimatum was set with a four-day deadline for Israel
19:35to comply with the terms of the truce agreement,
19:38especially regarding the entry of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip.
19:42Yemen's armed forces have halted their retaliatory strikes since January 19
19:47in support of the Gaza ceasefire,
19:49but are prepared to resume naval operations against Israeli interest if the blockade is not lifted.
19:56Yemen's stance has become a key player in the regional dynamics surrounding the Gaza conflict.
20:01The United Nations has reacted to the Israeli regime's decision to limit electricity supply to Gaza,
20:11a move that has sparked international concern.
20:14The electricity cuts, which have lasted for nine consecutive days,
20:18are having devastating consequences for the Gazan population,
20:21which already lives in extreme conditions.
20:25The United Nations emphasizes that the blockade
20:27should not be used as a weapon against the Palestinian population.
20:31The UNRWA commissioner warned in a press conference in Geneva
20:35about the risk of a severe famine crisis.
20:38He also strongly criticized the use of humanitarian aid as a political tool.
20:43According to the United Nations,
20:44the lack of electricity in cities like Deir al-Balag, Hanjiniz and Rafah
20:49not only affect the energy supply but also the healthcare and education systems,
20:54increasing the risk of a total collapse in these areas.
21:02...access to family planning...
21:04Israel's decision to limit electricity supply going into Gaza.
21:09This latest decision will substantially reduce the availability of drinking water in the Gaza Strip.
21:14Starting today, the facility is set to run on backup generators,
21:19which will reduce the water production capacity.
21:23Restoring this connection is vital for tens of thousands of families and children.
21:28Our colleagues at the Office of the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs
21:32tell us that all crossings into Gaza have been closed
21:35for the entry of cargo for nine consecutive days now.
21:39OCHA tells us that the Karim Shalom crossing
21:41also remained closed for the collection of cargo for the ninth straight day,
21:45which is severely impacting the delivery of humanitarian assistance across the Gaza Strip.
21:51We and our partners warn that fuel shortages are affecting aid operations.
21:55We're currently examining how to prioritize the remaining stock.
21:59Last week in Khan Yunis and Deir al-Bala,
22:01six bakeries shut down due to the lack of cooking gas.
22:06And as of yesterday, 19 bakeries supported by the World Food Programme are still operating
22:12and trying to maximize their capacity to bridge the gaps.
22:18On Tuesday, the President of Serbia, Alexander Bushik,
22:21denounced that a coup d'etat is underway in the country.
22:24He assured that violent factors are trying to forcibly form a transitional government.
22:29He explained that an executive without elections, besides violating Articles 308
22:35and 309 of the Constitution, would be the end of prosperous, modern and flourishing Serbia.
22:41This Monday night, a group of students blocked the headquarters of the National
22:45Radio and Television in Belgrade, the capital of the country.
22:48It is the preamble of the demonstrations that they are calling for next March 15th,
22:54when they will try to take more institutions by force.
22:58The sponsors claim that they are protesting the lack of justice for 15 people who died
23:03in the collapse of a train station. The government warns that the violent
23:08ones will be arrested and subjected to long prison sentences.
23:15And with this information, we have come to the end of this News Brief.
