00:32the capital of Haiti, and announced an increase in aid to combat criminal groups.

00:49and almost a total destruction after nine days.
01:02Hello and welcome to From the South.
01:03My name is Belen De Los Santos.
01:05I'm from Tesler Studios in Havana, Cuba.
01:08We begin with the news.
01:09In Venezuela, the Vice President, Delsi Rodriguez, who is also Venezuela's Minister of Energy
01:14and Petroleum, has toured the Orinoco oil belt to see that the industry continues to
01:20strengthen.
01:21The facility, one of the most important in the country and named after Commander Hugo
01:27Chavez, was toured by the delegation, which also included the President of Petroleos de
01:31Venezuela, Hector Obregón, and in a leading role, the plant's workers.
01:38During the visit to the facility, located in the south of the country, which extends
01:42over five states, they reviewed the recovery and development plans and reaffirmed the commitment
01:48to contribute to peace and the growth of the country.
02:06And the Attorney General of Venezuela, Tarek William Saab, ratified the summons by the
02:11public prosecutor's office to the former presidential candidate of the Venezuelan
02:14ultra-right, Edmundo González, to make statements in relation to a series of crimes he is accused
02:20of, among them his responsibility for the publication on an unofficial web page of fraudulent
02:27electoral records.
02:28We give you more details with our correspondent, Luis Guillermo Garcia, let's see.
02:36Prosecutor Tarek William Saab recalled that Edmundo González has repeatedly ignored and
02:40disrespected the authority of several institutions of the Venezuelan state, first of all the
02:45National Electoral Council, by not signing an agreement to respect the results, which
02:49he did not recognize and then endorsed, through different means, the publication of false
02:55minutes in an electronic media, accusing the electoral power of fraud.
02:59Then, he disregarded the summons issued by the Electoral Chamber of the Supreme Court
03:03of Justice to present his arguments and evidence of his accusations and, finally, he did not
03:09appear before the public prosecutor's office, after this agency ordered his presence in
03:13three occasions.
03:19In this sense, as we informed you, the public prosecutor's office ratifies the summons with
03:25the arrest warrant in progress for González Urrutia to be interviewed, and ratifies that
03:31he is requested and must be presented and brought to justice, as it corresponds within
03:36the framework of the Constitution and the law.
03:44The denunciations of electoral fraud made by the ex-candidate of the ultra-right, endorsed
03:49by corporate and political powers of the United States, were followed by multiple violent
03:55acts carried out by groups financed by the extreme right, several of which have already
04:00been ordered by the authorities, who point to Maria Corina Machado and Edmundo González
04:06as those responsible for these criminal operations.
04:14They are the intellectual actors of the death of 27 Venezuelans during the days following
04:19July 28 and of having mortally wounded 190, of which 100 are police and military officials
04:26and of having attacked and destroyed 400 state and also private properties, such as schools,
04:31high schools, universities, health centers, educational centers.
04:41The also president of the citizen power, Tariq William Saab, highlights that Edmundo González,
04:46through his lawyer, José Vicente Jarró, states that he is not responsible for the
04:51publication of the false tally sheets and that this is the responsibility of the unitary
04:55platform led by Maria Corina Machado.
04:58However, the Attorney General pointed out that it is public, notorious and communicative
05:03that the former candidate proclaimed his supposed electoral triumph based on these fraudulent
05:07publications.
05:08However, the Attorney General emphasizes that the presence of González Urrutia's lawyer
05:12before the public prosecutor's office is a sign that this attorney recognizes the authority.
05:23Edmundo González Urrutia recognizes the Venezuelan institutionality, he recognizes
05:29the public ministry, which has a value for democracy, because indeed, if he presented
05:35himself as the electoral standard bearer of the most extreme right, and even boasts that
05:40he was a diplomat, the least a diplomat should do is to respect the rule of law.
05:46To be in the right if he is required and to present his allegations based on an ongoing
05:51investigation that has been made public.
06:00According to these announcements, the authorities are continuing their investigations into the
06:04various acts that sought to carry out a coup in Venezuela after the July 28 elections,
06:11in which President Nicolás Maduro won.
06:21In other news, Mexico's President-elect, Claudia Sheinbaum, assured that there is no
06:25possibility of suspending the reform of the judiciary as it is a decision of the people.
06:31This is how she responded after being consulted by the media about the beginning of consultations
06:36on the reform announced by the Supreme Court of Justice.
06:39The President-elect assured that a few people cannot reverse the decision of the Mexican
06:44people expressed on June 2nd.
06:47She assured that the decision rests in the sovereign power and that it will be for the
06:51best of the country.
06:58Who has to decide the constitutional reform are the deputies and senators, and as it says
07:04in the constitution since 1939 that sovereignty resides in the people, but also, the only
07:11one who has the power to change the constitution is the constituent, which in our country are
07:18two-thirds of the chamber of deputies of senators and majorities that correspond in local congresses.
07:25We must make the popular will.
07:29In this context, President-elect also called for calm and stated that the reform is the
07:33best thing that could happen to the country.
07:38Nobody has to worry.
07:39The fact that the judges, ministers, and magistrates are elected by the people of Mexico is better
07:45for Mexico.
07:47That means more democracy, more independence of the judiciary, but also as I have explained,
07:53the way in which they will be elected to be voted.
07:56Who will decide who will be voted is through a broad call is the best thing that can happen
08:00to the country.
08:03Now let's take a short break, but remember you can join us on TikTok at TELUS for English
08:07where you will find news in different formats, news updates, and much more.
08:14We'll be right back, stay with us.
08:34Welcome back from the South.
08:39The United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken landed on Thursday in Port-au-Prince,
08:43the capital of Haiti.
08:44He announced an increase in aid to combat criminal groups, but made no reference to
08:48the problems of the Presidential Transitional Council.
08:52Two weeks ago when he announced the trip, he included as a priority the issue of the
08:57serious accusations of corruption involving members of the Presidential Transition Council
09:01that was imposed by Washington and Ottawa.
09:05However, upon landing, he only spoke of more aid to fight violence and the creation of
09:10the Electoral Council.
09:12On Friday, the Secretary of State is expected to hold a meeting with the President of the
09:16Dominican Republic, Luis Avila.
09:24And Nicaragua is taking a significant step towards strengthening its agricultural sector
09:29with the introduction of new varieties of pitaya, this fruit also known as dragon fruit.
09:35Let's see.
09:36Between 15 and 20 varieties of pitahaya are grown in Nicaragua.
09:44Recently, the government, through the Nicaraguan Institute of Agricultural Technology, presented
09:51the new inter-red pitahaya variety that has been made available to producers.
09:59We have done a characterization work of 16 materials we had, in which this turned out
10:04to be one of the most outstanding materials.
10:07Among the main characteristics of this pitahaya that we are making known today, we can mention
10:12the size.
10:13It is a pitahaya that has an average of 550 grams, which makes it an export fruit that
10:21is, from the organoleptic point of view, a quite sweet variety.
10:24It has 12.6 grades brick, which makes it excellent for its consumption as fresh fruit, and also
10:32for its processing, either for jam, jelly or wine.
10:39In Nicaragua, improved varieties of pitahaya with specific characteristics to better adapt
10:45to Nicaraguan climatic conditions have begun to be implemented.
10:49These new varieties promise increased production, greater resistance to pests and diseases,
10:55as well as superior fruit quality.
11:01It is a very good variety.
11:04After all, it is a variety that we can export more easily because it is more productive
11:08and has a good color and it is different from the one we grow.
11:14With the new technologies that the government is giving to the producers, a significant
11:18improvement is achieved because all this is a more resistant variety.
11:27With these new technologies, we plan to add more to the varieties we have, to improve
11:31our crop and to be able to develop better as producers and achieve the export for our
11:35products and thus improve the quality of life of our families.
11:43The expansion of pitahaya production not only seeks to improve local supply and diversify
11:48the market, but also to open up new export opportunities, thus boosting the country's
11:54economy and generating employment in the rural sector.
12:02We currently have more than 400,000 kilograms exported to Asia, Europe, Costa Rica, El Salvador,
12:11and this is achieved in part to the producers who have implemented different techniques
12:17in this crop and its production through technology transfer.
12:25Nicaragua is making progress in pitahaya production, with the potential to become a reference in
12:31the region and in international markets.
12:34Kenia Doña, Telesur, Nicaragua.
13:05with a penalty of 18 months to 6 years of imprisonment, a high fine and disqualification
13:11from holding office for 2 to 5 years.
13:14Likewise, the initiative, which consists of only one article, includes the criteria of
13:19all the benches and proposals of the opposition, Frente Amplio, and of the Cabildo Abierto Party.
13:25And in the Philippines, the former mayor of Bamban, Alice Leoguo, was extradited back
13:39to the country early Friday after being arrested in Indonesia.
13:43Guo, who had been on the run since July, is accused of human trafficking and linked to
13:50organized crime, specifically involving a gambling center where hundreds were allegedly
13:55forced to run scams or face torture.
13:59Her escape route included Malaysia and Singapore before her capture on September 3, 2024.
14:06Upon arrival in Manila, she was taken into custody by national police.
14:11Guo faces multiple charges, including graft and money laundering.
14:16Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. called her capture a significant step in combating
14:23crime.
14:42On Friday, Brazilians arrived to the commemoration of the Amazon Day amid severe regional drought
14:48and surging wildfires.
14:50According to the National Institute for Space Research, over 38,000 fire outbreaks have
14:57been recorded throughout the Amazon just in August.
15:00The INPE specialists asserted that the humidity and smog from wildfires are spreading to the
15:06Sao Paulo metropolitan region due to the drought and the low flow of the Amazon rivers.
15:12So far, some 62 municipalities in the region have been declared in a state of emergency,
15:16while local authorities estimate that over 330,000 people have been affected.
15:27And according to scientific studies, the temperature of the Mediterranean Sea is increasing.
15:32Specialists and activists are concerned about the current situation.
15:35Let's see the details from the scene with our correspondent Andres Flores.
15:42The Mediterranean Sea is warming in record time.
15:47According to data from the American Meteorological Society, so far in 2024, warm records have
15:52been broken daily, surpassing 2023, a year in which all records have already been surpassed.
16:03To get a closer look at the current situation, we went to the Mediterranean with the researchers
16:07from the Center for Ecological Research and Forestry Applications.
16:11A public research center located at the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
16:19There is said we are facing a fire in the Mediterranean at the moment.
16:22At some point, it has exceeded 30 degrees, something that has not been seen.
16:28So we have exceeded all the limits since records have been kept.
16:36Brockman highlights the consequences of this increase in the temperature of the Mediterranean
16:41Sea.
16:42Fish, marine life, fauna and flora are affected in their development processes.
16:51Also the chemical quality of the water changes, the acidity changes, the pH changes, many
16:57elements change according to the temperature.
17:00The currents change, the winds change, the waves change.
17:04The list is very long.
17:06Also warm water evaporates more, so there are changes in the presence of evaporated
17:11water and fresh water in the air.
17:19Increases in the temperature of the Mediterranean Sea have consequences that are both worrying
17:23and highly visible.
17:27The Mediterranean is one of the best known and most extensively studied areas in which
17:31the impact of temperatures is having effects, both at the level of ecosystems and at the
17:36level of cities and human populations.
17:39It is an area that, due to its own orography and to the fact that it is poorly enclosed,
17:44the impacts of climate change are more accentuated than in other territories with different causalities.
18:00The fundamental issue is the decrease in many of the industrial, transport and other unnecessary
18:05activities that are currently being carried out.
18:10The increase in airport, port and vehicle fleet expansions are completely contradictory
18:15to the decarbonisation policies that, in principle, the European Union should be implementing.
18:35Final short break, don't go away.
19:06Welcome back from the South.
19:08The United Nations announced that the number of people suffering from catastrophic hunger
19:14will soar in 2024, largely due to the conflicts in Gaza and Sudan.
19:20According to the most recent release of the Global Food Crisis Report, at least 2 million
19:24people now face the most critical level of food insecurity, an increase of more than
19:30double from the previous period.
19:32The report confirms extreme food shortages and depleted coping capacities, and warns
19:38of a markedly increased risk of acute malnutrition and death.
19:43The report also detailed that the impact of the war and severe restrictions on humanitarian
19:47response have led to a total collapse of food, health and protection systems, with catastrophic
19:53consequences.
20:16We go now to Palestine, where after carrying out the largest military incursion into the
20:20occupied territories since the year 2000, the occupier troops have left Yennen, leaving
20:26death and destruction in their wake.
20:29In the end of the siege of the city and its refugee camps has been confirmed by the local
20:34authorities.
20:35They also certify that the genocidal army has withdrawn from the vicinity of the government
20:41hospital and the Ibn Sina hospital, where they have been stationed since the invasion
20:46of the West Bank began on August 28th.
20:49The local government, confirming the complete disengagement of the Israeli military, reported
20:5439 deaths, more than 130 wounded, and almost complete destruction after nine days of violence.
21:08And in this context, health workers started vaccinating children against polio in the
21:12southern Gaza Strip on Thursday, after concluding the first phase of the immunization campaign
21:18in the territory's central areas.
21:21Vaccines are being administered by local health teams in coordination with UNICEF and the
21:25World Health Organization as an urgent measure to prevent a polio outbreak after health authorities
21:31confirmed the first case reported in 25 years.
21:36There remains a risk that polio could re-emerge as a regional or global outbreak.
21:41It is important to note that the disease reappeared in Gaza as a mutated virus from an oral polio
21:47vaccine.
21:49In this context, Hanan Bakley, WHO Regional Director, made a few statements.
21:55Polio has been eradicated from all countries in the world but two, Afghanistan and Pakistan.
22:05So the resurgence of polio after 25 years of no cases in the occupied Palestinian territory
22:14creates a lot of anxiety in the global public health community and for WHO as well, specifically
22:22for children who can potentially become paralyzed.
22:26Understanding who was vaccinated and who was not is another challenge that the teams are
22:31working very clearly on with independent teams that are monitoring the campaign performance,
22:37but also to ensure that the data that is being collected is as accurate as possible.
22:42It's never going to be exactly the number to the dot.
22:58And Palestine is a country with an extensive and rich tradition in the art of embroidery.
23:03Let's know a little more about this tradition.
23:10The colorful and elegant patterns that are present in the traditional embroidery of Palestine
23:15are an important part of the history and identity of this people.
23:19Originally, this art was made and used only in the rural areas of the country.
23:24However, with the time it extended to the big cities and today it is part of the clothing
23:28of the Palestinian women in and out of this territory.
23:31This unique artistic style identifies them.
23:36A long dress, jacket, pants, veil or headscarf.
23:40Each one of these garments has an embroidery hand made by a Palestinian woman.
23:51Wool, linen or cotton fabrics are the canvases chosen by the craftswomen to make the embroidery
23:56with silk threads.
23:57Various motifs and patterns adorned with figures such as birds, trees or flowers are made.
24:04Both this and the colors, in different combinations, communicate different data such as the region
24:09of origin, the socio-economic status and the marital situation of the woman wearing the
24:14embroidery.
24:16The most important and representative garment is the thab, a loose fitting dress with details
24:21on the sleeves and embroidered stripes that go down from the waist to the cut.
24:26The knowledge and tools required for this practice are passed from mother to daughter
24:30through different generations, giving them the opportunity to develop a skill and even
24:34generate income through the sale of these pieces.
24:42Embroidery is an activity that is usually done collectively.
24:44A group of embroiderers from the same village gather in a house or community center to work
24:49together, surely with the presence of their daughters, who learn by observation, although
24:54it can also be taught in a formal way.
24:57This makes it a tradition that fosters and develops family and community ties, building
25:02a national identity through the colorful clothing and Palestinian pride.
25:06The art of embroidery in Palestine, its knowledge, techniques, practices and rituals, was inscribed
25:12as an immaterial cultural heritage of humanity in the year 2021.
25:27And like this, we have come to the end of this news brief.
