00:00In Venezuela, the President of the National Assembly presented new evidence which ratifies
00:13that there was no coercion or pressure against the ex-presidential candidate of the far right
00:19Edmundo González during their meetings at the Spanish embassy in Caracas.
00:28In Haiti, the transition government reaches 100 days in office with little progress and
00:34without gaining ground on criminal groups that control part of the national territory.
00:43And Israel launched on Friday an aggression against the southern suburb of Beirut in Lebanon.
00:48The capital and eight people have been reported as fatal victims so far.
01:03Hello and welcome to From the South.
01:04My name is Belén de los Santos.
01:06I'm from the Televisual Studios in Havana, Cuba.
01:09We begin with the news.
01:10In Venezuela, the President of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, presented a document
01:14in which the former presidential candidate of the far right, Edmundo González, recognizes
01:19the ratification of the triumph of President Nicolás Maduro by the Supreme Court of Justice.
01:25Our special envoy in Caracas, Ignacio Lemus, with the details.
01:31Leaving Venezuela, former opposition presidential candidate Edmundo González Urrutia signed
01:36a document recognizing the Supreme Court of Justice's ruling ratifying the electoral
01:41victory of President Nicolás Maduro.
01:43The signing of the letter took place during a meeting with the Spanish ambassador, the
01:47Executive Vice President, Delsi Rodríguez, and the President of the National Assembly,
01:53Jorge Rodríguez.
01:58And Mr. Edmundo González Urrutia continues, Mr. President of the National Assembly, I
02:10have always been and will continue to be willing to recognize and abide by the decisions
02:15adopted by the organs of justice within the framework of the Constitution, including the
02:20aforementioned ruling of the electoral chamber.
02:28González Urrutia also stated that he recognizes the five institutions of the state.
02:33Through the document, the ex-candidate of the extreme right requested authorization
02:37for his asylum in Spain and promised that his public activity abroad would be limited.
02:43The government of Spain denies having dialogued with Venezuela, but in an exclusive interview
02:48with Telesur, the President of the Legislative Assembly verified that there were conversations.
02:56It was a two-way negotiation.
02:58It was a conversation.
03:00It was a negotiation between the Vice President and the government of Spain for the purpose
03:05of the documents, let's say legal.
03:14That has to do with the safe conducts that Venezuela has to grant so that people can
03:18leave the country, as in the case of González Urrutia, who had a request from the Public
03:24Prosecutor's Office of the Republic and also to give the approval to a plane of the Spanish
03:30Air Force that was to come to pick up González Urrutia, which is another thing that also
03:41has incongruities.
03:43Because they start to say that there was no negotiation, it is that a plane was flying
03:48around and decided to land.
03:50They think we are still in the 16th century or in the 17th century, when we were a colony
03:56of that empire.
03:57I am not talking about the 19th century that hurts them a lot.
04:01But it is evident that if that plane lands and is kept in the hangar of the Vice Presidency
04:06of the Republic, it is because there is a permission from Venezuela, and that is part
04:12of the negotiation with the government of Spain.
04:20During the morning prior to the publication of the letter by the President of the National
04:24Assembly, Edmundo González's lawyer denied that the document had been signed.
04:34Edmundo González confirmed to me directly that he has not signed any document acknowledging
04:39the electoral results of the National Electoral Committee in Bulletin No. 1 and No. 2.
04:50The lawyer's speech was refuted by Jorge Rodríguez.
04:55I invite anyone to make a graphological analysis of the signature of Mr. Edmundo González.
05:01But we are also showing a photograph of Mr. Edmundo González signing, and I tell one
05:06more anecdote, that a friend of mine laughs at my absentmindedness, I did not have a pen
05:12at that time, and I asked Mr. González Urrutia to borrow his pen, my signature is written
05:19with Mr. González Urrutia's pen, because I did not have a pen.
05:29The lawyer's statements contradict those of his client, who from Spain acknowledges
05:34having signed, but assures that it was under duress and considers that the document is
05:38null and void.
05:40Jorge Rodríguez gave 24 hours for Edmundo González to rectify the accusations made.
05:48I have other evidence to the contrary.
05:51Do not force me to show them, because I am willing to do so.
05:55I have recordings of the meeting I personally had with Mr. González Urrutia.
06:00Do you want me to show them?
06:05The officialization of the letter comes at a time when the National Assembly is advancing
06:09in the investigations on the fascist actions that generated the death of 27 people against
06:14the electoral result of last July 28th.
06:22Now in this context, let's see the pieces of evidence presented by the President of
06:25the Venezuelan National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, where on the first audio, you can see the
06:31cordial climate of the meeting held between Edmundo González and the Venezuelan authorities,
06:36Jorge Rodríguez, and the Vice President, Delsi Rodríguez.
06:39Let's see.
07:02And also other pieces of evidence show González Urrutia's urgent desire to leave the country.
07:08Let's see.
07:18And in other news, we stay in Venezuela, as the National Telecommunications Commission
07:22of the country, Canetel, announced the start of the public bid to develop the fifth-generation
07:27frequency of mobile telephone company in the country.
07:31On the opening of the second edition of the International Telecommunications FITELVEN
07:352024 fair, which took place in Caracas, the sectoral Vice President of Public Works and
07:41Services and General Director of Canetel, Jorge Márquez, confirmed that he gave accounts
07:46to President Nicolás Maduro to guarantee the operation of the project.
07:51The plan aims at advancing with new technologies and putting them at the service of the population.
08:05Now let's take a short break, but remember you can join us on TikTok at Televisor English
08:08where you will find news in different formats, news updates, and much more.
08:13We'll be right back, stay with us.
08:32Welcome back from the South.
08:33In Colombia, President Gustavo Petro affirmed that the dynasties are the main cause of the
08:38increase in drug traffickers and violence in the country.
08:42The Colombian head of state rejected the positions of some senators who wanted to annul the discussion
08:48of the pension reform bill, thus preventing its approval.
08:51In this regard, Petro explained that an aristocracy has governed for years in the nation, generating
08:58a profound social inequality that has led to an increased number of drug traffickers
09:03and criminals and a great wave of violence.
09:07In this context, the Colombian people mobilized on Thursday from different cities to the Bolivar
09:12Square to demand that the Constitutional Court passes the pension reform.
09:19A democracy of surnames is not a democracy.
09:27Our history has not been a democratic one for that reason.
09:31Because it has not been the people who have the power, but those hereditary families who
09:36believe they have the divine right not only to govern for generations, but to appropriate
09:41national wealth, the public wealth of Colombia, and thus turn us into a country full of drug
09:48traffickers.
09:49A country with profound social inequality, and a country as violent as the one we have,
09:55and from which we must emerge as the government of change is demonstrating.
10:03And in other news, the Plurinational Government of Bolivia invited once again indigenous leader
10:08Evo Morales to hold a meeting in order to avoid internal clashes between brothers belonging
10:14to a single people.
10:15Through the Minister of the Presidency, Maria Nela Prada, the executive has called a meeting
10:20to be held on Friday at the Ministry of Education in La Paz.
10:24Since the march organized by Evo Morales, some confrontations have been reported, the
10:32last of them related to the retention of a press team from the national television station.
10:38In order to prevent an escalation of the conflict and more violence, the executive insists on
10:43dialogue.
10:51On these days, we have further reiterated the call for dialogue to Evo Morales, and
10:55today we invite once again Evo Morales tomorrow, on Friday, September 20, 2024 at 6 pm.
11:05Furthermore, Minister Prada once again warned of the dangers that threaten democracy in
11:11the South American country.
11:18We identify once again that a new attempt against democracy is brewing in our Plurinational
11:22State of Bolivia.
11:26We alert the people and the international community to a shortening of the mandate and
11:30a rupture of the constitutional order.
11:37And Haiti's transitional government, presided over by Gary Cunil, completes 100 days in
11:42office.
11:43The balance sheet reports modest progress in general areas, but none in the management
11:48of the most pressing issues.
11:50Sponsored by the United States and Canada, the government constituted to resolve the
11:54crisis of violence as a top priority, in addition to those related to hunger, health and fuel
11:59supply, has made no progress in any of these areas.
12:03Hospitals and schools remain under the control of criminal groups and at the mercy of shortages
12:08and deterioration.
12:10In political matters, the first steps have been taken to form the Provisional Electoral
12:15Council for the elections scheduled for 2026 and work is also being done to structure a
12:22truth commission.
12:29In other news, in Argentina, medical personnel from the largest children's hospital have
12:34gone on a 24-hour strike over salaries and better working conditions.
12:38Nurses, doctors and technicians rallied inside the children's hospital and then marched to
12:44the health ministry, denouncing low salaries, some below poverty levels.
12:48In this context, most medical personnel claims they need two to three jobs to make ends meet.
12:55It is important to mention that inflation continues to seriously affect the country,
12:59as August's inflation rate was above what both the government and market were expecting
13:05and they were projecting a figure below 4%.
13:14I had two jobs until April of this year, and from there, I started calculating because
13:19you start to see that it's not enough.
13:22On the fourth or fifth of the month, when you pay everything and calculate that there
13:26will only be enough to pay for the gas, then you start looking for alternatives.
13:36I rent and the rent updates are bimonthly, quarterly or every four months.
13:41In my case, it is quarterly.
13:43My income is insufficient.
13:45In fact, I don't know how I will face future increases in the next six months.
13:49Today, it already represents between 40 and 50% of my income, which is a lot.
13:55The truth is that nowadays, I don't know how to do it, except relying on another job, but
14:00it's not enough for me.

14:22Final short break, don't go away.
14:39Welcome back from the South.
14:43We go now to the Middle East as Israel launched on Friday an aggression against a southern
14:48suburb in Beirut, the Lebanese capital.
14:51And eight people have been reported as fatal victims so far, among them at least five children.
14:56The death toll was confirmed by the Lebanese health ministry, which also informed that
15:01near 59 people were injured during the four missiles attacks that targeted buildings in
15:06the capital's southern suburbs near the Al-Qa'im Mosque complex.
15:11In this context, ambulances, Red Cross and civil defense firefighting teams rushed to
15:16the targeted location and are working to transport the injured amidst the army's deployment.
15:24Meanwhile, in Palestine, Israel has killed more than 14,000 children in 350 days of its
15:34genocidal operation in Gaza, according to UNICEF.
15:38The most recent report presented by Ted Chavane, deputy executive director of the fund, warns
15:44that the number of displaced children has also increased exponentially.
15:48Although there is no specific number of children in this line, they confirmed that the overall
15:53number of displaced Gazans amounts to 1.9 million.
15:58UNICEF calls for an immediate ceasefire to facilitate medical care, the rescue of bodies
16:02and especially the distribution of humanitarian aid.
16:06In this context, since August, the number of trucks entering the country with aid has
16:11dropped to 100 per day.
16:30In Argentina, a documentary about the dictatorship Death Flight was presented on Thursday.
16:36The film is called Traslados or Transfers and has 90 minutes length and deals with the
16:42assassination of political activists during the military dictatorship that ruled Argentina
16:48from 1976 to 1983, who were murdered by being thrown from the plains to the Plata River.
16:56The documentary counts with testimonies of survivors, investigators and representatives
17:01of human rights organizations, in addition to showcasing archived material and fictionalized
17:07recreations.
17:08The film, that goes chronologically over the case, from the first clues to the court rulings
17:13that proved the facts, will be screened in Argentina for the few weeks before its European
17:19tour.
17:22The documentary puts evidence on the table and puts together all the pieces and everything
17:31that was known from March 24th, 1976 to the present day about the death flights.
17:38The truth is very important.
17:42I think it is essential for young people today to know what happened, what students who studied
17:47in the same classrooms as us as in the University of Buenos Aires went through and well.
17:51To continue reflecting everything that Argentina and Latin America need, which is to know the
17:57truth of everything that happened during the dictatorship.
18:02And the third International Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Fair opened its doors
18:07in Cuba at the Pabeco Fairgrounds, where hundreds of companies from more than half a dozen countries
18:13are participating in a biannual event.
18:16Fabiola Lopez tells us more.
18:20It is a new opportunity to participate in Cuba's energy transition.
18:24Businessmen, investors and high-level experts exchange experiences and technological advances
18:29here.
18:30The contribution of the United Nations Development Programme to the island's energy transition
18:35was discussed with Telesur by its representative in Cuba.
18:40There are two lines of action for us, the first has to do mainly with access to energy
18:44for communities that live in remote places.
18:47In that line of action what we have been doing so far is installing solar panels that
18:51have benefited up to 3,000 families.
18:54The second line of action has fundamentally to do with access to energy from the point
18:58of view of innovative financing mechanisms.
19:00It is fundamental to see how we can offer the government different financing mechanisms
19:04that will eventually allow access to energy for large projects.
19:13Achieving 100% participation of clean energies in Cuba's energy matrix is more than a vision
19:18for the country, it is a goal.
19:20The Cuba Electronica Company, part of the Ministry of Industry, is presenting a project
19:25aimed at reducing energy consumption in Cuban homes at this fair.
19:32Such is the case of the rice cookers or cooking equipment used in Cuban homes.
19:41The use of fans in this case that work with photovoltaic panels, with energy independent
19:51of the industrial network and also air conditioners that are powered by photovoltaic panels.
20:03These air conditioners are inverter technology air conditioners and therefore also contribute
20:07to the efficient use of electricity.
20:14The private sector also has a prominent place in this professional platform with news and
20:18projects.
20:20The Cooperative of Non-Agricultural Production of Integral Services to Transport, Mining
20:24and Construction has as one of its main business lines the realization of projects, installation,
20:30commissioning and guarantee of photovoltaic systems and solar lights.
20:36We have in our catalogue more than 200 luminaires, ranging from the world of domestic luminaires
20:40for the home to industrial business establishments.
20:43For the future of Cuba this is very important and transcendental because it is another variant
20:47of taking advantage of the sun so intense that there is, that cannot be blocked, that
20:51is for everyone.
20:52And in the case of Cubans it is very important to be able to use it.
21:00For RENOVA, a private company dedicated to providing installation and maintenance services
21:05for wind and photovoltaic energy systems, the future is today.
21:09They provide technologies that contribute to energy efficiency, offer lead lighting
21:13in high performance computer and communications equipment.
21:19Undoubtedly renewable energies are an alternative for the development of our country, a country
21:24that is hit by the energy crisis and this is a very important alternative.
21:34Solutions like the ones we present here are already being tested in different state and
21:37non-state actors with good results.
21:45The truth is that this is a path that must overcome technological and cultural challenges.
21:50The island's Minister of Energy and Mines warned that there can be no talk of development,
21:55of building a prosperous and sustainable socialism, of energy sovereignty and climate change mitigation,
22:00without the development of renewable energy sources.
22:06And like this we have come to the end of this news brief.
