8 July - National weather forecast presented by Alex Burkill
Transcript
00:00Hello, very good day to you. There will be a bit of warm sunshine this afternoon for
00:05some places, but in other areas it's going to feel pretty autumnal, especially across
00:10the south where we have a low pressure system and associated fronts pushing in, bringing
00:15quite a bit of cloud and increasing amounts of rain. Worth noting that the jet stream
00:20still semi running across the UK at the moment. It's not as strong as it was last week when
00:25we had that pretty unsettled weather, but we are still on the northern colder side
00:30of it, which is why temperatures this week are generally going to be relatively suppressed.
00:35As we go through the next 24 hours, the rain in the south will push its way northwards
00:39across many parts of the UK, lingering across northern parts as we go into Wednesday, bringing
00:43some heavy rain then. Otherwise, there is a drying trend from the west as we go towards
00:48the end of the week and the weekend. But before then, there will be quite a bit of cloud and
00:53some showery outbreaks for many places as well. But looking at the here and now then
00:58and across northern parts, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Northern England, perhaps there will
01:01be a scattering of showers here and there. In the south, it's a cloudy story. Outbreaks
01:06of drizzly rain already this morning and some heavier, more persistent rain pushing into
01:11parts of Devon and Cornwall as we go through the afternoon. In between these two areas
01:15there across this central slice of the UK here, we should have some mostly dry and at
01:20times bright or sunny weather. And with that, it's here we're going to see the highest temperatures.
01:25Temperatures peaking around 21, possibly 22 Celsius. Elsewhere, especially where there's
01:30that thicker cloud and the rain towards the south, it is going to feel markedly cooler
01:34than this. And as I said before, feeling a bit autumnal. As we go through the evening,
01:39we are going to see that rain in the southwest spilling across much of England and Wales.
01:43We're likely to see the highest totals across parts of southwest England and south Wales.
01:48We could see some travel disruption as well as a bit of localised flooding, which is why
01:52we do have a warning in force. But a wet night then for much of England and Wales. And with
01:58the cloud and the rain, temperatures aren't going to drop a huge amount, generally staying
02:02well into double figures. A different story further north, though. Across some parts of
02:06Scotland and Northern Ireland, here we'll have some drier, clearer weather. And prone
02:11spots, rural areas under the clear skies could well dip into mid-single figures. So a fresher
02:16start to Tuesday here. So a north-south split to start Tuesday. Fresher, drier in the north,
02:22wetter in the south. And that rain then continuing to make its way northwards. So as we head
02:26towards the afternoon, that rain will be pushing into far southern parts of Scotland and eastern,
02:31southeastern parts of Northern Ireland too. Though all the time, the far north-northwest
02:36of Scotland is likely to hold on to some drier and sunnier weather through much of the day.
02:41Further south, across the rest of England and Wales, it is going to stay pretty cloudy.
02:46There may be some brighter breaks, but on the whole, largely cloudy skies. And although
02:50the heaviest, more persistent rain will be clearing its way northwards, there will still
02:54be some outbreaks of rain around and especially towards the southeast. Some of these could
02:58be a bit on the heavy side. Like I said at the start, there is still some cooler air
03:03across us at the moment because of the position of the jet stream. And so temperatures are
03:08struggling a little bit. We may just about again get into the low 20s if we see some
03:13brighter, sunnier spells developing once that rain clears through as we go into this afternoon.
03:18But for many, especially under this band of rain, it is going to feel pretty disappointing,
03:23a bit unpleasant. Remember, it is well and truly into July now. As we go through tomorrow
03:29evening, that band of rain across northern parts continues to edge a bit further northwards.
03:33All the time, the far northwest of Scotland clinging on to that dry, clearer weather.
03:37Perhaps the far northwest of Northern Ireland as well, staying mostly dry. Elsewhere, some
03:42clear spells as we go through Tuesday night, but also some outbreaks of rain. The rain
03:46in the north is going to be heavy on Wednesday. We do have another warning out because of
03:51that, likely to see some issues as a result of the intense rain there. Otherwise, as I
03:56said at the start, there is a drying trend as we go towards the weekend, but still some
04:01showers to watch out for and temperatures generally staying below average. But if we
04:06do see any sunshine, it should feel relatively warm. If you want more information about what
04:11we can expect weather-wise this week, then do head to our YouTube channel as Alex Deakin
04:16will have a full update later on. Bye bye.
