22 August - National weather forecast presented by Alex Burkill
Transcript
00:00Hello again. It's not autumn yet. It is still August, but there will be some very unseasonable
00:05weather around through tonight and into tomorrow because of Storm Lillian. Now, that feature
00:10is currently just to the west of us, but it is quickly going to bring some very wet, very
00:14windy weather initially across parts of Northern Ireland through this evening, but then all
00:18of that unsettled weather is going to feed into England, Wales and Scotland overnight.
00:23With the unsettled conditions, temperatures aren't going to drop a huge amount, generally
00:27holding up in the mid to high teens for some places, especially towards the southeast.
00:32But obviously when we wake up, yes, it's going to be mild or perhaps even warm for some of
00:35us first thing on Friday morning, but it is going to be pretty unpleasant with all that
00:39wind and rain around. Now, we could see some impacts from the unsettled weather. In terms
00:44of rainfall, the greatest likelihood of impacts will be across parts of southwest Scotland
00:48and around the Aberdeenshire Angus coast as well. Here we could see totals quite widely
00:53reaching 20 to 30 millimetres, perhaps locally 40 to 50 millimetres. And so some localised
00:58flooding and travel disruption is relatively likely here. It's probably the winds, though,
01:03that are going to have a greater impact, especially across northern parts of England into North
01:07Wales, southwest Scotland as well. And here quite widely, we're looking at gusts of 50
01:12to 60 miles per hour as we go through Friday morning and locally in some exposed spots
01:17towards the coasts and the higher ground, gusts could reach 65 to 75 miles per hour,
01:22perhaps even a little bit stronger than this. So these kind of winds, particularly at this
01:25time of year, could cause some damage to property. There could be some flying debris around and
01:30also some further travel disruption. So do take care overnight and first thing tomorrow
01:34morning. But Storm Lillian does actually clear through relatively quickly, so a very unsettled
01:39start to the day. But then as it clears away towards the North Sea, things will be turning
01:43dry and a bit more settled later on. Yes, there will be quite a few showers across Scotland,
01:48Ireland, northern parts of England, and some of these could be quite heavy. But across
01:53more central southern parts of England and much of Wales, it's looking largely dry and
01:57a decent amount of sunshine, more sunshine than we've seen through today for some places.
02:01And with that feeling a little bit warmer as well, good chance that we'll get to the
02:05low, possibly mid 20s towards the southeast, but markedly fresher than this further north
02:10and west. Some places struggling mid teens at best. More showers to come across the northern
02:15parts as we go through Friday evening and overnight and generally fine end to the day
02:19for much of England and Wales. But quickly it will turn cloudy and wet across southern
02:25counties as we go overnight into Saturday. Temperatures won't be quite as high as through
02:31this coming night. But nonetheless, with the cloud, the rain in the south southeast, many
02:35places staying in the mid teens further north where we get some clear skies and lighter
02:39winds than through this coming night, it is going to turn a bit fresher. Some places away
02:43from the towns and cities dropping to mid single figures perhaps. Then Saturday is going
02:47to be a very wet day across southern and southeastern parts. We could see some impacts from this
02:53rain because it is going to be heavy and persistent. But worth bearing in mind, it has been pretty
02:57dry in this area through the last few weeks. Elsewhere, whilst that rain clears away through
03:02the day, there will be some sunny breaks around. But again, also plenty of showers, these most
03:07frequent towards the northwest of the UK. But even elsewhere, we will see a few showers
03:11passing through at times. We do have slightly fresher air coming in behind this system and
03:16so temperatures won't be as high as on Friday. Just about getting into the low 20s towards
03:21the south of the UK and further north, some places struggling in the low to mid teens
03:25Celsius. That front in the southeast does clear away as we go later Saturday into Sunday.
03:31Then through the long weekend for many of us, there will be some dry weather around
03:34but also some spells of rain at times too and some stronger winds. Notice the feature
03:39coming through during the latter part of Monday. Some uncertainty about the timing
03:43of this and it may not be as potent a feature as Storm Lillian is going to be, but it could
03:47cause some further issues. For more information about that, do head to our YouTube channel
03:51where you will find our weekend forecast presented by Annie. I'll see you again soon. Bye bye.
