25 April - National weather forecast presented Aidan McGivern

00:00Hello, good morning. April showers the theme during the next couple of days. We keep the
00:05cool airflow and certainly a chilly start out there this morning with a frost in places
00:10but some brightness, especially for Western Scotland, parts of Northern Ireland and some
00:15parts of England and Wales seeing sunny spells. But there's also a number of showers out there
00:21and by the afternoon I'd say cloudier skies and more showers about compared with the same
00:26time yesterday. I think most of the showers will be affecting parts of Central and Southern
00:31England as well as Wales. There'll also be further showers into the North Sea area of
00:36England and North East Scotland. But Western Scotland and later Northern Ireland seeing
00:41mostly dry and bright weather with some decent sunny spells. With light winds in the sunshine
00:47in the west, 13 or 14 Celsius, not too bad. But in the east with the wind from the North
00:53Sea, 8 to 10 Celsius, continuing to feel fairly unpleasant for the time of year. Into
01:00the evening the cloud and the showers in the south tend to fade away for a time but there'll
01:05be further showery rain pushing into the Scilly Isles, the far south west of Cornwall later.
01:09There'll also be further showers peppering the North Sea coast of Northern England and
01:14North East Scotland. But away from the showers the cloud will tend to thin and break and
01:20with lengthy clear spells and light winds it's going to be an even colder night with
01:24temperatures dipping close to freezing in many places and in the east of England, parts
01:29of Central and Western Scotland a degree or two or even three below freezing. So fairly
01:35cold as we start off Friday for late April, nothing particularly unusual however there
01:41will be that chill in the air, there'll be the frost, gardeners beware about that. But
01:45plenty of sunshine, soon rising those temperatures, also tending to build the cloud through the
01:50day and we'll see further showers affecting the north and east of England as well as North
01:55East Scotland. One or two for Northern Ireland but more prolonged rain arriving into the
02:00south west of England affecting parts of South Devon, Cornwall, Scilly Isles again and thickening
02:06cloud for southern counties of England as well as South Wales. It's going to make it
02:10feel a bit colder I suspect, 12 or 13 in the south, 8 to 10 once again along the North
02:16Sea coast. Now the building cloud and the outbreaks of rain in the far south west increasingly
02:21affecting more widely southern parts of the UK on Saturday as this low pressure is drawn
02:27northwards by the jet stream and that low continues on its northward journey into Sunday
02:32to bring rain more widely across much of England and Wales. But Scotland and Northern Ireland
02:37mostly keeping the sunny spells and April showers theme I think on Saturday and Sunday
02:43as you can see by the speckled nature of the 24-hour rainfall totals on Saturday across
02:47Northern Ireland and Scotland. Also North East England, decent dry weather there for
02:51Cumbria and North Wales but more persistent rain affecting southern and central parts.
