00:00Hello, it's staying cold across the UK for the rest of the week and as a result
00:04we do have an amber snow warning in force for northern areas of Scotland and
00:08that's where the heaviest snow has been this week and will continue to be
00:12through Thursday and into Friday too. We could see a further 10 to 15 centimetres
00:16falling for parts of the Highlands and the Northern Isles. Strong winds here
00:20could lead to drifting snow and very difficult driving conditions so make
00:24sure you take a closer look at the warning on our web and app if you are in
00:28those areas for the next few days or so. Elsewhere across the country it is
00:32staying cold and in the south we've seen a cloudier start due to this rain and
00:37sleet and snow that's affecting northern areas of France. We did see a few
00:40flurries for southern counties this morning but mainly just a cloudier start.
00:45For more northern areas, North Wales, much of Northern England and
00:48elsewhere in Scotland and Northern Ireland it is staying dry with plenty of
00:53crisp winter sunshine but we will continue to see snow showers moving in
00:57to the north coast of Northern Ireland. North Wales at times and western areas
01:02of Scotland and there's plenty of snow and ice warnings in force for this
01:05because we could see ice on the roads where we do have any wet surfaces from
01:10any showers because the temperatures are staying low even by day. Many towns and
01:14cities in the north might not reach much above freezing at all. In the south
01:18where there's slightly thicker cloud the temperatures are a little higher but it
01:21will stay fairly gloomy along the far south coast through much of the day and
01:25then through the evening that cloud in the south will slowly start to clear so
01:28it's going to be a widely clearer night so it will be a colder night tonight.
01:32This morning we got down to minus 14 degrees and that means it was the
01:36coldest January night since 2019. Tonight's likely to be even colder and
01:41could be the coldest January night since 2010 so it will be a very cold start to
01:46the day across the UK. The coldest temperatures are potentially minus 18 as
01:51likely in rural glens, some Scottish glens but rurally elsewhere in the
01:56country could be down as low as minus 10 but you can see towns and cities minus
02:005 or minus 6 so a sharp frost is likely tomorrow morning and we have got a
02:05further risk of snow and ice so do take care if you're traveling in any northern
02:09and western areas and that's where we're most likely to see many any snow showers
02:13throughout Thursday. Parts of West Wales as well as eastern England, southeastern
02:19Scotland as well seeing some snow showers but the most frequent snow
02:22showers as well as those stronger winds are going to be it's still in northern
02:26areas of Scotland where that amber warning is still in force. Inland areas
02:29should stay dry through much of Thursday, a similar feeling day for many northern
02:33areas of England, southern Scotland than today and a brighter day in the south
02:37than today and temperatures still struggling, highs of around 2 or 3
02:42degrees in the southwest perhaps climbing up to 6 or 7 degrees but there
02:46will be a bit more of a wind chill particularly across coastal areas with
02:50that cold Arctic air still coming through. However we do start to lose the
02:56Arctic air finally into the weekend as we get more mobility coming into our
03:01weather. That means we'll see the return of some milder Atlantic air but
03:05also the return of some wetter and potentially very windy weather for Sunday
03:11and into the start of next week. Alex Burke here will have more information on
03:15all of that in our 10-day trend later on today but remember we do have snow
03:19and ice warnings in force for many areas of the country so make sure you keep up
03:23to date with the details and I'll see you next time.
