00:00Welcome to your national weather update from the Met Office.
00:03The cold spell of weather is upon us
00:05and it's likely to last a while.
00:07There are Met Office warnings in place.
00:09Here's the bigger picture, the view from space.
00:11You can see showers draped around the UK coming down
00:15on a northerly wind.
00:16And it's northern Scotland bearing
00:17the brunt of those wintry showers, snow over hills
00:21and to low levels here.
00:23We do have a Met Office warning in place for that.
00:26Cold wind blowing too.
00:27A few showers draped across eastern parts of England.
00:29The odd one for West Wales and Northern Ireland also.
00:32More of rain here with some snow on the hills.
00:35For the vast majority, it's a fine, bright but cold
00:39winter's day with plenty of sunshine around.
00:41Temperatures below average, three or four degrees.
00:44Some places struggling to reach that.
00:46Maybe five or six across the south.
00:47It does feel a lot colder with that northerly wind
00:50in northern Scotland and with those fairly
00:52frequent wintry showers coming in.
00:54Now we'll see more of those snow showers
00:56over northern Scotland tonight and more of the showers
00:58coming into the east as well.
01:00As temperatures drop off, well, things could turn icy.
01:03With these showers coming into Northern Ireland, Wales
01:05and southwest England, we also have a Met Office yellow ice
01:09warning in place here through the night.
01:11Slippery conditions on the surfaces.
01:14The showers tend to wash away the salt
01:17before temperatures then drop back down to freezing.
01:20So yes, some slippery conditions on the roads and pavements
01:23through the night and into the morning.
01:25It will be very cold.
01:26We've got the clear skies.
01:27Temperatures likely to drop well below freezing,
01:29even in urban areas.
01:30And we could be as low as minus eight or minus nine
01:33in some rural spots.
01:35On to Thursday's weather, and it's a similar story
01:37with many places dry, fine, and sunny.
01:39But the potential for those icy conditions, particularly
01:42in the morning over Wales, southwest England,
01:43Northern Ireland, eastern England,
01:45and still some snow showers coming
01:47in across northern Scotland.
01:49They may ease a little as we go through the day here.
01:51But increasing chance of seeing some more wet weather coming
01:54into southeast Scotland and northeast England.
01:57That will mostly be rain on the coast.
01:59But inland and over hills, some sleet and snow is likely.
02:02And it could build up in a few spots.
02:04So that is something to watch, parts of the A1 in particular,
02:07during Thursday afternoon and evening.
02:09For many elsewhere, as I said, fine and sunny once more.
02:12But another cold one.
02:14Temperatures lower tomorrow afternoon,
02:16struggling to get much above two or three degrees
02:18for the vast majority.
02:20Again, feeling colder in the wind across the north.
02:22But elsewhere, the winds will be light,
02:24and there'll be plenty of sunshine.
02:26But once the sun sets, those light winds
02:28means temperatures will once again drop down.
02:31Increasingly, those wintry showers
02:34coming down the eastern sides of England,
02:36perhaps again giving a bit of an accumulation
02:38of snow in some spots, mostly over hills.
02:41But there could be some to lower levels as well.
02:44Low pressure continues to bring down northerly winds
02:48as we go through the next few days.
02:50Those northerly winds bringing the cold air.
02:52So it's going to stay cold through the weekend
02:54with further wintry showers as we go into next week.
02:58Eyes drawn behind me to an area of low pressure
03:01that could introduce milder and wetter conditions.
03:05And where those two clash, that could bring some snow.
03:08But next week, that's a long way off.
03:10A lot of uncertainty about the track of this low.
03:12Certainly for the next few days, it
03:13stays cold with further wintry showers in places.
03:17And the main hazard, certainly in terms
03:19of how widespread it's likely to be, is going to be with ice.
03:22So keep up to date with the warnings and the forecast
