00:00Hello there, welcome to your weather update from the Met Office. As we go through the
00:04rest of this working week and into the weekend, there is a change in the forecast. We start
00:09to say goodbye to the cold weather, but as it does so, we will start to see an increase
00:14in risk of a significant spell of sleet and snow, especially across more northern and
00:18eastern parts of the country on Sunday. But it will clear and then we will see a brief
00:23milder spell come early next week with a mixture of some rain but also some blustery winds.
00:29So before we get there, it's going to be a very cold night out there tonight, widespread
00:33hard frost temperatures quickly falling way below freezing. Some sleet and snow still
00:38for the northern isles, Shetland and Orkney. The showers across the eastern parts of England
00:44will gradually fade as the night goes on, but more significantly we will start to see
00:48a band of sleet and snow for western Scotland and that will begin to work its way southwards
00:53as we start Friday morning. So if we track this southwards, it probably reaches Glasgow
00:58and Edinburgh for the morning commute, so we could expect some disruption here. It will
01:03continue to move a little bit further southwards as we go through the course of the day, so
01:06we could even see some sleet and snow for Northern Ireland. But for the main bulk of
01:10England and Wales, it is a largely dry day. A few wintry showers here and there, but plenty
01:16of weak winter sunshine. But it's not really going to help much with the temperatures.
01:20At best, possibly 6 degrees down towards the very far south-west, but under the sleet and
01:25snow, you'd be lucky if you do climb above freezing. So going into Friday evening, if
01:31you are heading out for the festivities, then certainly take a coat. It's going to be another
01:35very cold night out there. This area of sleet and snow will continue to sink its way a little
01:40bit further southwards, so watch out. There could be some slippery surfaces around, especially
01:44for Northern England and north-western parts of Wales. To the north of it, a mixture of
01:49clear spells and wintry showers, and to the south of it, under these clear skies, a very
01:54hard frost, with temperatures potentially again falling down to about minus 8 to minus
01:5910 in a few spots.
02:01So a cold, frosty, but sunny start for many eastern parts of England. Still got this area
02:07of sleet and snow for Northern England and north Wales, so watch out if you have got
02:11some travel plans here. A better day for Scotland, but still the risk of some sleet and snow
02:17around, especially across more western parts. Again, a few wintry showers still possible
02:21for Northern Ireland.
02:23Temperatures at best, possibly reaching 7 or 8 in the very far south-west of England.
02:29Signs of things to come, but for most of us, looking at temperatures not really climbing
02:34too much above freezing.
02:37Then going into Sunday, this is the day when we will start to see the transition to something
02:41a little bit milder. It's going to be a very slow process, however, and we will see a mixture
02:46of rain, sleet and snow moving right across the country. There are various warnings in
02:51force for Sunday, so do take care if you do have any plans on Sunday, especially for
02:56northern and eastern parts of the country. It will be accompanied by quite a strong wind,
03:00so it's really going to feel quite cold for the main bulk of the day, but it will start
03:05to turn milder from the south-west as we go through the course of the day, but it may
03:08well take until Monday before we all feel the benefits of that milder air. So do take
03:14care as we go through the weekend and stay in contact with the forecast. You can always
03:18check us out on YouTube for the latest forecasts and all the warnings will always be updated
03:23on our various social media channels. But that's all from me for now.
