00:00Hello! Welcome to My Pet and Me. I'm Fern.
00:07And I'm Rory. We've just been getting the barn ready for the animals.
00:10We like to make sure that they have the right food and water.
00:13And a nice comfy place to sleep as well.
00:15Now lots of different animals make excellent pets and we love meeting you and yours.
00:19We definitely do. And actually I'm off to meet some new friends now.
00:23You can come with me if you like. See you later.
00:25See ya.

00:30My pets, my pets and me.
00:33My pets, my pets and me.

00:39are pets to meet.
00:41Some big, some small, some skinny, some furry.

00:48Some have four paws.
00:51Some have sharp claws.
00:53Some quack. Some bark.
00:55Some purr. Some moo. Some grunt.
00:57Some squawk. Some cock-a-doodle-doo.
01:00My pets, my pets and me.
01:03My pets, my pets and me.
01:06My pets, my pets and me.
01:08Have you met my pets and me?
01:15Today we're at an animal charity in Cambridgeshire to meet Jess and Toby
01:18who are going to adopt a rescue pet.
01:20Let's go find them, shall we?
01:28Hi.
01:29Hi Fern.
01:31Hi Fern.
01:33Hello. You must be Jess and Toby.
01:35And you must be Dad. Nice to meet you.
01:37Hello Fern.
01:38So are we here to find you a new pet?
01:40Yes.
01:41I can't wait.
01:42And this is a perfect place to look too, isn't it?
01:44Because lots of animals are in need of new homes.
01:46Shall we go?
01:47Yeah.
01:48OK, come on.
01:58This charity looks after animals who are lost or unwanted
02:02and helps them to find a new home.
02:08Have a look down here.
02:09Rats.
02:10You think they're just waking up to say hello?
02:12Yeah.
02:13Hi rats.
02:15Snoozing Daegu.
02:17Shall we have a look and see what else there is?
02:19Yeah.
02:20Yeah, let's have a look through here.
02:22Look at these ones here.
02:25They're nice and plump.
02:26Yeah.
02:27Is she going to say hello?
02:29Hello.
02:34Maria's going to ask Jess and Toby some questions
02:36so they can work out which pet is best suited for them.
02:39It's really important to choose a suitable pet
02:41so that they can get the best care
02:43and that you and your new pet are happy.
02:46So can you tell me why you'd like a pet?
02:49So we've got something to be entertaining
02:53and to look after.
02:55Oh, OK.
02:56Why would you like a pet?
02:58So you can feed them.
03:00So you can feed it.
03:01Oh, very good.
03:02So can you tell me a little bit about your home?
03:04Do you have a big garden?
03:06Yes.
03:07Oh.
03:08And what's in your garden?
03:09Grass.
03:10Lots of grass.
03:11And dandelions.
03:12Grass and dandelions.
03:14Oh, now I think I might have the pet in mind for you then.
03:17Jess, can you tell me how much time
03:19would you be able to give your new pet?
03:21Before, after school and the weekends.
03:24Oh, I think that would be pretty good.
03:26So your mum and dad would be able to look after them
03:28in the daytime when they're there
03:30and then you can help them in the afternoons and evenings.
03:32Yes.
03:33Fabulous.
03:34So the animals I think that would suit you
03:36would be guinea pigs
03:37because guinea pigs can live with two
03:39so they like to have another one that will keep them company
03:41so that will be fine when you're at school
03:43so they're not bored or sad on their own
03:45but also they actually like to play.
03:48But also they absolutely love grass
03:50and they love dandelions
03:52so I think that your garden and your home
03:54is going to be perfect for guinea pigs.
03:56What do you think?
03:57Yes.
03:58Guinea pigs, that's great.
03:59Are you ready to give them a lifelong home
04:01and look after them really well?
04:03Yeah.
04:04Oh, that's brilliant.
04:05Rory, can you tell us some more facts
04:07about animal shelters just like this one?
04:10Of course, Farron.
04:12One.
04:13Many cats and dogs in animal shelters
04:16are often given up by people
04:17who simply can't take care of them
04:19so lots of the pets will already be house trained.
04:25Two.
04:26It's not just cats and dogs that can be adopted.
04:29Some have smaller animals like rabbits,
04:32hamsters,
04:33rats
04:34and guinea pigs.
04:37Three.
04:38If your family would love to have a pet
04:40but you don't have time to look after one
04:42then why not visit with an adult an animal shelter?
04:45You'll not only meet loads of adorable animals
04:48but have lots of fun too.
04:59Now that we've decided what pet is best
05:01we've come here to the guinea pig and rabbit garden
05:04to learn a little bit more about them.
05:06I think we should make a nice little welcome treat, do you?
05:09Yeah.
05:10What are we going to make?
05:11Guinea pig hay kebabs.
05:14That sounds great.
05:15How do we do that?
05:16We get the toilet roll
05:20and then we get some straw and pop it in.
05:24Put some hay in?
05:25Yeah.
05:27Why do we use hay?
05:29So then they can eat it.
05:31That's good for them, isn't it?
05:33Yeah.
05:34Guinea pigs love to chew on hay
05:36and it stops their teeth from growing too long.
05:38And then we get a stick and put it through the middle.
05:41One.
05:42Yum, yum, yum.
05:44How's that?
05:45It's good.
05:47Two.
05:48That is looking tasty.
05:50What do you think the guinea pigs will think of these lovely kebabs?
05:53They'll think it's good.
05:55Will they be happy?
05:57Yes.
05:58And now that we have lovely welcome home treats
06:01should we prepare their home?
06:03Yeah!
06:04Let's go.
06:08This is our new guinea pig home.
06:11It is perfect.
06:13But it needs a bit of getting ready.
06:15What do we have to do first?
06:17Put the hay in.
06:18Loads of hay.
06:20Why?
06:21So then they can be comfy.
06:23And eat it.
06:27Sugar, sugar, sugar.
06:28Your garden is perfect for a hutch this size, isn't it?
06:32And it's a great place for guinea pigs to eat and sleep.
06:35We do have a run so they can run about and do some exercise.
06:42And they're safe from bigger animals like foxes or other predators.
06:46I think this is enough hay.
06:48What's next?
06:49The food.
06:51What have we got here for them?
06:53Guinea pig pellets.
06:55Oh, yummy.
06:56These pellets are perfect for guinea pigs because it gives them extra vitamins.
07:02We'll put it here.
07:05Fabulous.
07:06And what's next?
07:08It's the toys and hats.
07:10So this goes in the far back corner.
07:13We'll put this here.
07:15Yeah, put it here.
07:17We'll hide some treats in.
07:19Oh, lovely.
07:21It can be really nice to give guinea pigs fresh vegetables as a treat.
07:24And it's really good for them because it gives them extra vitamin C.
07:27We need to remember where we put it.
07:29Yeah.
07:30When you check it out later you can see if the guinea pigs have found it.
07:33And if they haven't, then we can take it back out so it doesn't go rotten.
07:36I think we're almost done.
07:38But all we need is a bottle.
07:40For water.
07:46Perfect.
07:47Do you know what this hutch needs?
07:49Yes, it needs guinea pigs.
07:51It needs guinea pigs.
07:52Should we go collect them?
07:54Let's go.
08:04These guinea pigs already have homes, so we're just holding them for a little bit of practice.
08:09Are you excited to choose your guinea pigs?
08:11Yeah, we're really excited.
08:13It's going to be so much fun.
08:15If your guinea pigs could do anything, what do you think they would do?
08:20If our new pets could do anything, they would be pirates.
08:25They would sail at the seven seas on their pirate ship, the Black Whiskers.
08:30And they would hunt for treasure.
08:32They would find a treasure chest full of guinea pig food.
08:36And when they found it, they would go to the middle of the ocean,
08:39and sink to the bottom, and bury it so nobody could ever find it.
08:44Wow, my hearties.
08:50Finally, it is time for you to choose your guinea pigs.
08:54Are you excited?
08:55Yeah.
08:56You have two pairs of guinea pigs to choose from.
08:59Can we meet these ones first?
09:01Definitely.
09:02So these are called Georgia and Misty.
09:04And they are a year and a half old, and they're sisters.
09:07So this is Georgia.
09:09So are you alright if I pass her to you first?
09:11Right, so it's alright, I'll keep hold of her for a second.
09:14Good, we'll get the other one now.
09:16She needs a hairbrush.
09:19Oh, what do these ones feel like?
09:22Soft.
09:24Even your messy one?
09:26Yeah.
09:28Can I get it off?
09:29Yeah.
09:31This one's coming off.
09:34Are they tickly?
09:35Yeah.
09:37She wants to stay on us.
09:39That's a good thing, because if they're happy coming up to you,
09:42that probably means she quite likes you.
09:44What do you think?
09:46What does she think?
09:48Yeah, she's eating.
09:49Is she chewing that leaf?
09:51Yeah.
09:52The noises these two are making right now means they're really quite confident,
09:55they're talking to each other, and they feel quite safe.
09:58So that's a really good sign.
10:00I know they already have names, but can Jess and Toby give them other names?
10:03Definitely.
10:04When they come into the centre,
10:05they've got a name for us to make sure we know who they are.
10:08But I think it would be really lovely if you can rename them
10:11and take them home, and that's the name they'll keep.
10:14We'll put these back in here, and then we'll have a look at another two
10:17and see what you think to those two.
10:19That sounds good.
10:20Does that sound okay?
10:21Yeah.
10:23Oh, I like this one.
10:25Oh, I like that one.
10:27So this is Ramel.
10:29Oh, she's soft.
10:32And then this one is called Snowy Girl.
10:35She might like this.
10:37Hello.
10:38Let her relax for a second.
10:40Oh, no.
10:41No way.
10:43These ones are a bit faster than the other ones, aren't they?
10:45Yeah.
10:46But what do you think of their colours?
10:48I like it.
10:49So we'll have another little go.
10:51Okay.
10:52I'll have Snowy.
10:53You ready?
10:54I can put her on your lap.
10:56It's really hard, but have you made your decision yet?
10:59Yes, we're going to choose the brown ones.
11:02Why?
11:03Because they're more friendly.
11:05They are, and they're really cute too.
11:07Yeah.
11:08They're all lovely, so I'm sure these guys will find a home soon.
11:11Shall we put these ones back?
11:13We'll say goodbye, and we'll hold them again.
11:15All right, I'll take care for you.
11:17Are you ready to hold again?
11:19Yeah.
11:20What are you going to name them?
11:22Ginger.
11:24That's a good name, because she's kind of ginger-coloured, isn't she?
11:27Candyfloss.
11:29That is perfect.
11:31Is that just because of her sticky, ouchy hair?
11:33Yeah.
11:34I like this one because it's really soft.
11:36These are your new pets.
11:38Shall we take them home now?
11:40Yeah, I think that's a great idea.
11:42Do you think they're excited for their new house?
11:44Yeah.
11:45Yeah, I think they're going to love it.
11:47Look, Annie Bakes, there's your home.
11:49Open the door.
11:51We have a very curious ginger.
11:55Look at your new house, Ginger.
11:57Oh, she's really soft.
11:59Shall we put her in?
12:01Yes.
12:03Here comes Candyfloss.
12:05Yay!
12:07She's scruffy.
12:09Here's your new house.
12:11Oh, she's going in the tunnel.
12:15Are they eating their kebabs?
12:17Yeah.
12:19They are having a good explore around, aren't they?
12:21Mm-hmm.
12:23I think they're really, really happy guinea pigs.
12:25I have had a brilliant time coming to help you choose your new pet.
12:28I'm really glad they have you two here to give them a lovely new home.
12:31Thank you for helping us.
12:39Hi, Candy!
12:43Hi, Rory.
12:44Hi, Ferran.
12:45Hi, Holly. Hi, Barry.
12:46I'm just getting their bed ready. They look nice and cosy already.
12:48They definitely do.
12:50How was your day?
12:51It was brilliant. I had so much fun with my new friends.
12:54Pets are great, but you shouldn't touch an animal unless the owner says it's OK first.
12:59Two pets you definitely can play with are ours.
13:01Go to the CBeebies website and play the My Pet and Me game.
13:04What a fantastic time we've had.
13:06We just love meeting you and your pets.
13:10Today we met a lovely pet.
13:15We see how much you care for them.
13:18Thank you so much for sharing them.
13:21Time for us to just remind you
13:27After you've played with your pet
13:30Wash your hands! Don't forget!
13:33It doesn't matter what pets you've got
13:36It doesn't matter what pets you've got
13:39You might have one, you might not
13:42It's still fun finding out
13:45What having a pet is all about
13:48My pet, my pet and me
13:51My pet, my pet and me
