01:03Have you met My Pets and Me?
01:10Hello. Today we're in Cheshire to meet Esme and her very special pet, a bearded dragon.
01:15Let's go and say hello, shall we? Come on.
01:21Hi, Mum.
01:22Hi, Rory.
01:23Hi, Esme.
01:24Hello, Rory.
01:26Do you want to see my pet?
01:28Yes, please. Let's go.
01:33Hop up there.
01:36Well, a bearded dragon.
01:38What's your bearded dragon called?
01:40Beemo.
01:41That's a lovely name. Now is Beemo a boy or a girl?
01:43We don't know.
01:44That's right, isn't it? It's actually very hard to tell if bearded dragons are boys or girls until they're older.
01:50You can take them to a vet, though, to find out.
01:52Shall we do that later?
01:53Yeah.
01:54That'll be fun.
01:55How old is Bingham?
01:56Eight months.
01:57So still quite young. Yeah.
02:00And what do you love about Bingham?
02:02I like it when she crawls on me.
02:06When she crawls on you? All over you?
02:08Where does she crawl?
02:10My tummy.
02:11On your tummy? Is it tickly? Do you laugh?
02:14There's a very important question I haven't asked you yet.
02:17Do you know why they are called bearded dragons?
02:20Because it's got a beard.
02:22Yes. Do you know anything else that's got a beard?
02:24Mmm.
02:26Yes.
02:27What do you think of this beard? Who's got a nicer beard? Bingham or me?
02:31Oh, thank you.
02:33Bearded dragons are called bearded dragons because they've got a very different beard from me.
02:37If you look very closely, just under the mouth of a bearded dragon, you'll see lots of spiky scales.
02:42And that's where they get their name from.
02:44If they ever feel in danger or threatened, they puff that out nice and big.
02:48And that's why they're called bearded dragons.
02:50Ferran, can you give us some more fun facts about our new beardy friend?
02:54Of course, Rory.
02:56One. Bearded dragons are reptiles and they are cold-blooded.
03:01This means that they need to lie in the sunshine or warm places to heat up so they can move.
03:08Two. When a bearded dragon lies in the sunshine, it's called basking.
03:14Three. This funny hole is actually an ear.
03:18Bearded dragons have very good hearing to help keep them safe.
03:23Four. Bearded dragons are famous for their spikes.
03:27And if they feel in danger, then they will display them to frighten off any predators.
03:37Bear time!
03:45Bearded dragons are known as exotic pets because they come from somewhere very different from here.
03:50And that means that it takes a lot of time, care and commitment to look after them properly.
03:55And we can see here we've got a lovely tank.
03:58Has this got a special name?
04:00Vivarium.
04:01Yes, of course, a vivarium.
04:03And this is where you should keep lizards, bearded dragons and snakes as well.
04:08And if we look inside, you can see there's loads of space for Bingham to run around.
04:12Lots of places to hide and nice places to relax as well.
04:15What temperature is it in here? Is it warm or is it cold?
04:18That side's cold and this side's warm.
04:20Ah, and what's making this side warm?
04:22Well, because it's got a big lamp.
04:25That's right, a big hot lamp.
04:27And that's very important, of course, because bearded dragons come from a very warm part of the world.
04:32So we need to keep the tank nice and toasty.
04:34But it's good that you've got a cold part as well, isn't it?
04:36Because if he gets too warm, he has gone too cold.
04:39Yeah, a little chill-out zone.
04:41And if she gets too cold, where does she go?
04:43She goes to the lamp again.
04:46Yeah, and what does she do under the lamp?
04:48Sheds her skin.
04:50Yes, of course, these guys shed their skin, don't they?
04:54It's perfectly natural for bearded dragons to shed their skin.
04:57And when they're younger, they shed it more often because they're growing so quickly.
05:01I'm going to take some of this skin out so we can look at it more closely.
05:05Oh, wow, there we go.
05:07Look at that, isn't it cool?
05:09What does it feel like?
05:10It feels rough.
05:12Yeah, it feels rough, doesn't it?
05:13No wonder.
05:14Bingham's very scaly, isn't she?
05:18Mum's going to take Bingham and keep her nice and safe while we clean the tank out.
05:22Good girl.
05:26Very good girl.
05:27What shall we do first, then?
05:29Clean out the bowl.
05:30Good thinking.
05:31Right, let me just pick up some of these bits of spinach here.
05:36Looking a bit crusty, I think we need to change those.
05:40Put that over here.
05:42This wee bowl here.
05:44Pass that over to you as well.
05:46Right, and we've got a big heavy bowl over there.
05:49Right, we've got the bowls out.
05:51Time to clean them out, then.
05:52Let's go.
05:53Right, I'll help you down first.
06:00There we go.
06:06Right, we need to get these bowls emptied out and cleaned, don't we?
06:10There we go.
06:12And now this old spinach.
06:14Right, that's that old stuff.
06:16I've emptied the water out.
06:18Let's give it a clean.
06:19This nice warm water.
06:23OK, you dry that one off.
06:27That nice and dry, good work.
06:29And I'll use one of these special wipes afterwards to take any nasty bugs off.
06:36There we go.
06:39Give it a good scrub.
06:42OK, dry that one off now.
06:47OK, and now for the last one.
06:49That really needs a wash.
06:51That needs a proper clean, doesn't it?
06:52Right, good scrub.
06:56That's looking good now.
06:58Drying.
07:04And a little wipe.
07:05Yep.
07:06Just to make sure.
07:10Right, what goes in the big bowl?
07:12Fresh water.
07:13Right, let's put that in now.
07:19Nice, well done.
07:20OK.
07:21I need some spinach in that one.
07:23Some spinach.
07:24Are you going to put that in?
07:26I like spinach, do you?
07:28No.
07:29I love spinach.
07:30That looks like plenty, doesn't it?
07:32Now we need some clean calcium in there.
07:35Of course.
07:36This white powder here.
07:38And why is the calcium important?
07:40Because her bones will get all soft.
07:42Yes, if she doesn't have enough calcium, her bones will not be strong enough.
07:46Very important.
07:48Now, I heard that Bingham has a very special diet.
07:51What food do you feed Bingham?
07:53Worms for a special treat.
07:55Oh.
07:56Only for a special treat, though.
07:58Crickets.
07:59Crickets?
08:00Grasshoppers.
08:01How many crickets does she eat a day?
08:03Twelve.
08:04Each day?
08:05Sounds delicious.
08:07What do you think?
08:08No.
08:09Not for you.
08:10And it's very important to get an adult to do that feeding as well.
08:13Right, shall we take all these things back to the vivarium?
08:16Yeah!
08:20OK, there we go.
08:23Now, what are we going to do next?
08:25Let's get me a one for Bingham for a treat.
08:28Yes, that sounds good.
08:30Looks like we've got some here.
08:32Oh, wow.
08:34This is a very special treat, isn't it?
08:36Now, where are you going to put them?
08:38In there.
08:39So you put them on top of the spinach.
08:41Will that mean that she'll eat it as well?
08:43Yep, she'll eat the spinach.
08:45OK.
08:46Now, we've got everything in here.
08:49We've got everything in here.
08:51Someone's missing.
08:52Bingham!
08:53Yes, Mum can bring Bingham through.
08:56Hello, Bingham.
08:58Oh, wow.
09:00We've got some nice new calcium powder in there,
09:02lots of food, plenty of fresh water,
09:05and all her bowls are nice and clean.
09:08What do we have to do now?
09:10Wash our hands!
09:11Yes, come on!
09:16Woo!
09:17Wash your hands!
09:21If Bingham could do anything, anything at all,
09:23what do you think she would do?
09:27If my pet can do anything,
09:30she'll go to a wishing tree.
09:33She'll make a wish.
09:35She'll wish to have wings.
09:39She'll fly to a magical purple castle in the sky.
09:45At the castle, she will have tea and cakes with the king and queen.
09:58We've come to meet Molly,
10:00who's a vet with a special interest in exotic reptiles.
10:03We're going to finally find out if Bingham is a boy or a girl.
10:06Come on!
10:10Hello, Rory. Hello, Esme.
10:12Hello, Molly.
10:13And who have we got here?
10:15Bingham.
10:16Bingham.
10:17Oh, this is a beautiful bearded dragon.
10:20Do you know how old she is?
10:22Eight months.
10:23Eight months.
10:24Right, so I think we need to check whether Bingham's a boy or a girl, don't we?
10:27Yeah.
10:28Okay, so I'm just going to pick her up and we'll have a look.
10:31Okay, and see if we can tell.
10:33All right.
10:34Now, I'm looking at Bingham,
10:37and can you see those little dots?
10:39Mm-hmm.
10:40Okay.
10:41They're called paws,
10:43and that means that Bingham is a boy.
10:48Wow!
10:50We have been calling Bingham a girl all this time,
10:52and actually it's a boy.
10:54It's a boy.
10:55Wow!
10:56So shall we listen to his heart?
10:58A lizard heartbeat.
11:00This is exciting.
11:01Yeah.
11:02Now...
11:04Right, now can you hear in there?
11:08I can hear the heartbeat.
11:11Fantastic.
11:19I think it sounds fine.
11:21Good, that's the main thing, Molly.
11:22If you think it's fine, we're happy, aren't we?
11:25And now shall we clip his nails?
11:27Why are you clipping his nails?
11:29So that they're not too sharp when you hold him.
11:32Bingham has ten claws on his front feet and ten on his back.
11:36They're longer than our nails.
11:40So now we know Bingham's a boy,
11:42and he's a very healthy bearded dragon.
11:44Well done, Bingham.
11:46Thank you, Molly.
11:47You're welcome. It was nice to meet him.
11:50We'd better get him home now.
11:51Let's go.
11:54Esme, thank you very much for letting me meet
11:57your wonderful bearded dragon, Bingham.
11:59Have you had a wonderful time?
12:00Yeah!
12:01Thank you, Molly.
12:02You're very welcome.
12:04I'm so glad we got to find out that Bingham's a boy.
12:06He's amazing, isn't he?
12:10Hi, Esme!
12:19Hi, Fern.
12:20Hi, Rory.
12:21You've got a big smile on your face.
12:22What have you been up to?
12:23Oh, I've had a great time with my new friends.
12:25It was so much fun.
12:26That's fantastic.
12:27Well, Rosie and Millie are just getting a bit of a brush.
12:30Do you want to help out?
12:31Definitely.
12:32Looks like you need a hand.
12:33I do, thanks.
12:34There we go.
12:35Lots of tangles in here.
12:37There we go, Rosie.
12:39Pets are brilliant, but remember you shouldn't touch an animal
12:42unless the owner says it's okay.
12:44But two pets you can definitely play with are ours.
12:47Go onto the CBeebies website and play the My Pets and Me game.
12:50Thanks for spending time with us.
12:52We hope you've had lots of fun too.
12:57Today we met
13:00a lovely pet.
13:02Wendy, how much you care for them.
13:05Thank you so much for sharing them.
13:08Time for us to
13:11just remind you
13:14after you've played with your pet
13:17wash your hands, don't forget.
13:20It doesn't matter what pets you've got.
13:23You might have one, you might not.
13:26It's still fun finding out
13:29what having a pet is all about.
13:33My pets, my pets and me.
13:35My pets, my pets and me.
13:38My pets, my pets and me.
13:41Come back and see.
13:42My pets and me.
