01:08Have you met my pets and me?
01:14Today we're here on the beautiful Isle of Skye to meet Katie and her Highland Cows.
01:19I cannot wait to see them. Come on.
01:28Hi Katie.
01:30And you must be Katie's mum. Hello.
01:32Hi Fern.
01:33Nice to meet you.
01:34So are these your Highland Cows?
01:36Yes.
01:37They are beautiful, aren't they?
01:39Yeah.
01:40Do you know where Highland Cows come from?
01:42Scotland.
01:43That's right. They come from Scotland.
01:45Originally they came from the Highlands and the islands of Scotland.
01:49But nowadays they can be found all over the world, even in Australia.
01:54How many do you have?
01:56Twenty-one.
01:57Wow. That's a nice amount of cows.
02:00Do you have any favourites?
02:02Yet.
02:03Come on, I'll show you the other two.
02:05Show me the other two, your favourite ones. Let's go.
02:21Hello.
02:23Who are these, Katie? They're beautiful.
02:25Riona and Isla. They're my favourite Highland Cows.
02:29So the big one is Isla, the little one's Riona.
02:32And you've got two amazing white Highland Cows. They're gorgeous.
02:35I can see why they're your favourite.
02:37What age is Riona?
02:39Five feet old.
02:41She's tiny. That's really young, isn't it?
02:44Yes.
02:45Isla the mummy and Riona's her calf.
02:50Wonderful. Hello.
02:53They're really hairy, aren't they?
02:56Katie, do you think Isla can see with all that hair on her face?
02:59Yes. Sometimes my daddy brushes her.
03:02Brushes the cows? Do they like it?
03:04Yes.
03:05What a lucky cow.
03:08And they've got nice long hairy coats too.
03:11They're very good because it keeps them nice and warm.
03:14But in the summer their hair gets a bit shorter too, so they don't get too hot.
03:18Do you know why they've got such big horns?
03:21To protect themselves.
03:23That's right. Just in case any other animals want to hurt them.
03:26But do you know what they do in winter?
03:28They dig around in the snow with their big horns and they try and find grass.
03:32It's pretty clever.
03:34Yes.
03:35Their horns can be very dangerous, so it's important not to get too close to a Highland Cow.
03:40Where are you going?
03:42Are you going to try and find more food?
03:45Why are they your favourite?
03:47Because they're very calm and Riona are very, very cute.
03:52She's so cute with her little curly hair.
03:55And I hear someone special is going to visit Riona.
03:58The vet is coming later on.
04:01Just to make sure she's nice and healthy.
04:03That's exciting. I can't wait for that.
04:07Isla and Riona are two beautiful Highland Cows.
04:11Rory, can you give us some more facts about our hairy friends here?
04:15They're coming to say hello.
04:17Hi.
04:19Of course they are.
04:22One. Male Highland Cows are called Bulls.
04:25Females are called Cows.
04:27And baby Highland Cows are called Calves.
04:32Two.
04:33Highland Cows come in lots of different colours.
04:36Like red.
04:38Black.
04:41And white.
04:43Three.
04:44Highland Cows can spend up to eight hours a day eating.
04:48That's a lot of food.
04:52Four.
04:53The long fringe between a Highland Cow's horns is called a dosan.
04:57That's a funny word.
05:01Five.
05:02Highland Cows have very long tongues that help them to eat tasty grass.
05:06Or lick their nose.
05:08Eurgh.
05:13MUSIC
05:26Highland Cows are used to living in all sorts of weather conditions
05:30and they're pretty good at looking after themselves.
05:33If it gets a little bit wet, they can take shelter under some nearby trees.
05:37Casey, what do you do to look after your cows?
05:40Every morning we always go up the hill and pet them.
05:44That's a good idea, in case any of them are sick or need help.
05:47That's nice.
05:49Do you give them any special food?
05:51Yes.
05:52What do you give them?
05:53These cow nuts.
05:54These ones?
05:55Yes.
05:56These cow nuts are perfect, they're full of lovely vitamins for them
05:59to keep them nice and healthy.
06:01Shall we give her some now? She looks hungry.
06:03Yes.
06:04Are you ready, Isla?
06:06Here's your food.
06:08Whoa.
06:09Whoa, she's very hungry.
06:11She is, isn't she? She likes those.
06:14What do cows drink, Casey?
06:16Water.
06:17Shall we get them some? OK, come on.
06:29Is that enough?
06:30Yes.
06:36Shall we go?
06:37Yeah.
06:39Where shall I put it, Katie?
06:41Where we put it.
06:43In there, OK.
06:44Yes.
06:46You let me know if I'm doing it right.
06:55Do you think that's enough water, Katie?
06:57Yeah.
06:58Yeah?
06:59It's important that when you approach highland cows,
07:01you don't make too much noise or wave your arms about
07:04in case you give them a fright and they run away.
07:06Riona is so small and cute, Casey.
07:09Yeah.
07:10I get them big and I tend to nibble on them grass.
07:13Oh, is she?
07:14Yeah.
07:15Does she lick the grass?
07:16Yeah.
07:17Yum.
07:18Well, what if we make her something special?
07:21A cow cake.
07:22A cow cake, that sounds nice.
07:26What should we put in this cow cake?
07:28Pink flowers, buttercup, daisy.
07:31Cow nuts?
07:32Yeah.
07:33Grass?
07:34Yeah.
07:35And hay.
07:36And hay.
07:37That sounds yummy.
07:38Shall we go?
07:39Yeah.
07:40See you soon, Isla.
07:41Bye.
07:43Buttercup.
07:44Yeah, it's lovely.
07:45It's really long.
07:46It's so pretty.
07:47Yeah.
07:52What about these little feathery, feather grass?
07:56A bumblebee gets the pollen.
07:59Oh, wow, look at this.
08:01Look at the pollen.
08:04A very big bee, isn't she?
08:06Yeah.
08:09Is this one of your favourite colours, Casey?
08:11Yeah, and pink.
08:12And pink.
08:13A lot of big daisies there.
08:18Pink.
08:19Yeah.
08:20And to finish this yummy cake, we'll have a sprinkle of...
08:24Cow nut.
08:25Yeah.
08:28Yummy cow nuts.
08:29Let's go.
08:31Moo.
08:33Moo.
08:37Woo!
08:38Wash your hands!
08:41Casey, you are so lucky to have such beautiful animals.
08:45Now, we all know that Highland cows are very good at looking after themselves,
08:50but if your Highland cows could get up to anything, what do you think they would do?
08:57If my pet could do anything,
08:59he will get on a plane and go to town.
09:04He will go into a shop and buy a pink handbag.
09:09Then he'll go to a hairdresser and he'll get the pink bow on her tail.
09:15Then he'll get the bat home.
09:30Just like all animals, it's important to get them checked over by a vet
09:34just to make sure that they're nice and healthy.
09:36Isla and Riona are a little bit too big to take to the vet,
09:39so the local vet, Rona, has come to check if they're OK.
09:42Hi, Rona.
09:43Hi, Ferran.
09:44Hi, Katie.
09:45Hi.
09:46I heard that Isla had a calf, so I've come to see her.
09:49What's her name?
09:50Riona.
09:51When did Isla have Riona?
09:53Five weeks ago.
09:54You have to be careful when a cow has a calf, don't you?
09:57You do.
09:58It's very important not to go too close
10:00because they can be very protective of their calves,
10:03and it's especially important not to go between the cow and her calf.
10:07Otherwise, Mummy will be worried.
10:09She's keeping a good eye on Riona now, isn't she?
10:11She is.
10:12I think she's very fond of her calf.
10:16I'm not surprised. She's beautiful.
10:18Katie, we'll stay here while Rona goes to check on Isla and Riona.
10:28What a lovely calf.
10:30Did you choose her name?
10:32No, Daddy did.
10:34Daddy did.
10:35It's a beautiful name, isn't it?
10:37It is.
10:38And I can see that Isla has lots of creamy milk there for Riona,
10:43and Riona has a lovely full tummy.
10:45I can see that there.
10:47And she's got a lovely moist nose.
10:51That shows that she's nice and healthy.
10:53Is that her beginning to nibble some grass too?
10:56Yeah.
10:57She's got lots of lovely clover to eat.
10:59Is Isla's nose okay?
11:01Isla's nose is lovely and wet.
11:03Yes, she's a happy girl.
11:05That's great, isn't it, Katie?
11:07Yes.
11:08Thank you very much, Rona.

11:27Isla!
11:29Riona!
11:31We've got your cake.
11:35Here we go.
11:36I hope she likes it.

12:05What a greedy gut.
12:10I think they like their cow cake.
