00:00The Big 3 NBA podcast is powered by the Game Time app.
00:25Hello everyone.
00:26Welcome into the Big 3 NBA podcast, Sharad's Already Causing Chaos, A. Sharad Blakely,
00:31Gary Washburn.
00:32I'm Kwanye Lunas.
00:33I need to shout out Gary right now because he is in France, as you all know, and it is
00:371 in the morning, 1.13 in the morning, and he still has stuff to do, but he is dedicated
00:42enough to be here.
00:43So let's just quickly get into it so he can finish everything else he has to do before
00:47he goes to bed.
00:48Team USA, they cruise over Brazil.
00:51Honestly, it wasn't balanced.
00:53It wasn't fair when you think about the way Team USA has played, generally speaking, it's
00:58not fair to other countries.
00:59But Devin Booker, 18 points in 15 minutes, Kevin Durant, 11 points.
01:03It actually breaks the all-time leading score record in Team USA history, surpassing men
01:08and women.
01:09So Lisa Leslie had the top spot.
01:11He bumped her out of it, but also made sure to thank her online for being a trailblazer
01:16in a sense.
01:17But let's talk about Drew Holiday, nine points, three assists in 17 minutes.
01:21He's returning after missing a win over Puerto Rico with that ankle injury, but what are
01:26your concerns?
01:27Obviously, we're a Celtics-centric podcast.
01:30We can get into the other two as well, but Drew Holiday specifically, what are your concerns
01:35in the amount of basketball he's been playing the last two games, knowing that the Celtics
01:39ideally want to go for Banner 19 next season?
01:43Well, the thing about Drew Holiday is he's shown to be such an important part of the
01:48Celtics, frankly, ability to win at the highest of levels.
01:54And when you see him go out with an ankle injury, you don't want to think it's that
01:58big a deal, but then you start looking at the birth certificate.
02:00You start thinking about the miles on those wheels that he has.
02:04And anytime he has to miss any action for any type of health ailment, I think it's reason
02:10to pause.
02:12And I don't think it's any kind of, certainly it's not a season ending or anything like
02:17that type of injury, but you have to wonder at what point do these little bumps and bruises
02:22that he's used to playing through are going to keep him sidelined?
02:26And at what point are the Celtics going to be looking at ways to minimize the amount
02:31of wear and tear on his body?
02:32Because he's such an important part of what this team does.
02:35When you look at what he's able to do, not only as an elite defender, arguably the best
02:39on-ball defender in the NBA, but also what he brings to the table from a scoring standpoint
02:45when it absolutely matters most, which is the playoffs.
02:49So Drew's situation is one that if you're the Celtics, you're not nervous Nelly-ing
02:56about it, but you're definitely paying attention to how his body's responding and you definitely
03:00want to give some thought to how you're going to manage the wear and tear that his body
03:05is going to go through during the regular season.
03:07Yeah, I'm not as really concerned.
03:13I think he's been a very durable player.
03:17Do you want him playing?
03:19And I don't think anybody plays major minutes in the Olympics at this point, and we could
03:25talk about Jason's situation, you know, soon.
03:31But to me, I think he'll be fine.
03:37There's only two more games left, so I think he'll get plenty of rest, he'll get a whole
03:42month off, a month plus before training camp starts, and I think he'll be fine.
03:47You can't take away the Team UXA experience from anyone.
03:50A lot of guys want to play, so there's really nothing that teams can do to stop their players
03:56from playing for their country.
03:59So Drew's a guy who likes being part of this team, the team really likes him.
04:05Steve Kerr loves him and Derek White, because either of them are in the game at all times.
04:12He loves that defense that both play that combination.
04:16So I don't think it's a reason for concern.
04:19I think it had been a gold medal game or a medal game.
04:23I was told Drew could have played that game against, I think it was Puerto Rico, and they
04:31didn't need help against Puerto Rico anyway.
04:35So I think it's fine.
04:38One thing about the Olympics, it's not like they're playing 15 or 20 games.
04:41They're playing six in this tournament, and then, you know, the five-game exhibition,
04:49so you're talking about 11 games.
04:51So I think after this coming weekend, he'll go home, rest up, he'll be fine for training
04:57camp in about six to eight, seven weeks.
05:01So no concerns on my part.
05:03I'm glad Jason's getting some rest too.
05:06Yeah, let's get into it.
05:09Gary, you're on the ground, what have you been seeing from the Celtics in general?
05:15Yeah, I just think it's a situation where Jason isn't playing well.
05:22He seems kind of cursed, to be honest.
05:25When he gets a layup, it rolls out.
05:28I think he had a dunk, he missed it.
05:33Not the one at the end of the half that was from LeBron, that was a really nice dunk.
05:36But it just seems like when he's trying to do something that resembles Jason from this
05:43season and throughout his career, it just ain't working.
05:48Maybe that's just lack of playing time, maybe that's just mental at this point.
05:53He just seems a step slow, he's yet to hit a three-pointer in the Olympics.
05:59He's just not, he's trying to do the little things.
06:02I know guys have to change in the Olympics, but
06:04it just seems like he's just not himself.
06:07And he's just kind of maybe understands that, hey, I'm just not a big part of this
06:12team like I was in 21 in Tokyo, where he was the second best player
06:17on Team USA during that time.
06:19He helped him get that gold medal, getting that win over France.
06:25But this time, there's just so many other guys.
06:28I just think the presence of LeBron makes a difference.
06:33Steph makes a difference, and then you got Joel Embiid.
06:37So three guys that are major,
06:39major players that were not on Team USA three years ago.
06:43And then you got Drew and Derek are playing well.
06:47Then you also have the president, Devin Booker.
06:50And it's obvious, Kerr has a liking for Booker and playing major minutes.
06:53So it just seems like this might not be the Olympics for Jason.
06:58Now, does that mean he'll say, I ain't playing in LA?
07:01I doubt it, I think he'll continue to play.
07:04But I just think roles change.
07:05Sometimes guys have big impacts in Olympics, sometimes they don't.
07:09And maybe Jason in these last two games will make a big play,
07:14make a big shot, or have a big game, and
07:17kind of make hope that he can forget about the experience.
07:21I know he just isn't very happy right now.
07:23He's trying to deal with it, and he understands.
07:26But he just feels like probably the chemistry of this team and
07:29how it's put together, it just might not be Jason's time.
07:34But Gary, you and I, and Kwanye, all of us, we've seen a lot of basketball.
07:40I've never seen a player relatively young,
07:44the second best scorer on your team, comes back four years later,
07:47doesn't have injuries, doesn't have anything.
07:49In fact, he's literally at the peak of his success
07:54to go from your second best scorer to DNPCD.
07:59Something doesn't feel right about that.
08:01And I know that there's some incredibly talented players on this team.
08:05I know that, I get that.
08:07But something feels really wrong when a guy just won a championship,
08:12was the leading scorer on that team, was all NBA, not second team,
08:16not third team, but first team.
08:18And he's not even coming off the bench.
08:20He's not playing.
08:22He has become basically the Team USA ML car,
08:26waving a towel, trying to cheer the troops on.
08:29Gary, I'm telling you-
08:31What is going on in Paris?
08:34Tatum is going to have an 82 game revenge tour.
08:40Gary, I'm going to put it out here right now.
08:42I am all about Jason Tatum for League MVP this year,
08:46because he is going to come into the season
08:48with a ridiculous amount of motivation to prove everyone wrong.
08:54Absolutely.
08:54I wouldn't be surprised when they play Golden State,
08:56if he puts up 30 in the first half,
08:59he's going to be, I think, just a different kind of player
09:03when we get to the regular season.
09:05Because you better believe right now,
09:07there are people questioning whether Jason Tatum is overrated.
09:10Whether Jason Tatum, is he really that guy?
09:12I mean, first, Jalen Brown gets Eastern Conference Final MVP,
09:16then NBA Finals MVP.
09:18Now, Jason Tatum goes to the Olympics and he's Mr. DMPCD.
09:22And the only time he gets run is when the game is out of reach.
09:25Is he overrated?
09:26That is going to be a question.
09:28And I'm going to tell you right now, I don't believe he's overrated.
09:30In fact, I think right now, he's going to go into this season
09:34and is going to have the best season of his career.
09:37Because he's going to be coming into the season
09:40with a level of motivation he's never, ever had before.
09:43Think about this.
09:43This dude has never been at the end of anybody's bench.
09:47And yet, he is that guy.
09:50He's the 11th man.
09:51Only one behind him is my man from Indiana.
09:54That's it.
09:56Some ain't right about that, G. I'm sorry.
09:58Some just don't feel right about that.
10:01It sounds like you think it's personal.
10:03And Gary, you're thinking it's strictly basketball related.
10:07Is that the case?
10:08I don't think it's.
10:09I think there might be a situation where
10:12Kerr is playing favorites.
10:15He loves Derek White and Drew Holiday.
10:17We know that.
10:18They're getting run.
10:19Derek's getting more run than Jason.
10:23He has a liking for Devin Booker.
10:26Jason's kind of.
10:28Then you've got to bring back Kevin Durant.
10:31Where do you play him?
10:32Because you've got to give KD his run.
10:36And you've got to give LeBron his run.
10:40And Jason, you could try to play Jason at center.
10:43But you've already got Joel Embiid, Anthony Davis,
10:47and Bam out of Bayou playing that position.
10:51So to me, it's a lot of guys here.
10:54And Jason, I'm not.
10:57Jason did not deserve a DNP, obviously.
11:00But he's also not playing well.
11:01We watched Jason for years, watched him his whole career.
11:05He's out there thinking.
11:07I could just tell.
11:08He's not just, boom, let me go to the basket.
11:11He's thinking.
11:12He's trying to make it happen.
11:13OK, let me maneuver my way.
11:15Let me get in.
11:16It's just dumb, man.
11:17Like, just hoop.
11:19Get out of your own head.
11:20I just think he's in his own head right now.
11:22The shot isn't going down.
11:23He's missing shots he usually hits.
11:25He's missing layups.
11:28A couple of times he's gotten stripped, getting to the basket,
11:31or lost the ball.
11:33I just don't even.
11:34If you look at his numbers, he's just not playing well.
11:37He's averaging like six points a game.
11:40He hasn't hit a three.
11:46I just think it's mental.
11:47But I also think that DNP, I think
11:50he was like, what the hell's going on here?
11:52And I think he probably, when he went to Paris,
11:55he probably had an impression of how it was going to go.
11:58It hasn't gone like that.
12:00It is still KD and LeBron.
12:03It's still their team.
12:03You bring LeBron back, that's a whole personality.
12:06It's his team.
12:08He is Team USA, even though he hasn't been there in 12 years.
12:12You bring in Steph, he's got to get his run.
12:14And that's not Jason's position, but you're
12:16talking about guys who are taking chunks.
12:18When you add three players, Embiid, Steph Curry,
12:23and LeBron to a team, it's Jason's no longer
12:27the first guy, the primary option, or one of them.
12:33LeBron is.
12:35Steph's not having a great tournament,
12:37but you've got to get him shots.
12:38They're trying to get Embiid going.
12:40So they ain't worried about Jason.
12:43Jason's got to get himself going.
12:44Jason needs, in these last two games,
12:47against Serbia and whoever they play,
12:49obviously likely the gold medal game against France or Germany.
12:56He's got to find his own way.
12:58This is on him.
12:59And I just think he'll be up to the challenge.
13:03Don't sulk.
13:04Don't look upset.
13:05I can't wait till we get home, all that.
13:07No, man, hoop.
13:09Find your way, whether it be eight assists, get 10 rebounds.
13:14If it's not scoring, find a way.
13:16Make some defensive plays.
13:18I'm not saying he's not doing that.
13:19He's doing all the little things, block shots.
13:22But I know he defines himself sometimes by his offense.
13:27And I know he wants to score more.
13:29So maybe he's got to find it with himself,
13:31because he's not going to get 35 minutes.
13:34It's a 40-minute game.
13:36And you've got 12 dudes.
13:37Or you said Sherrod 11 without Tyrese Halliburton.
13:41Jason's got to find it.
13:43And he's got to find it in whatever increments of time
13:46he gets.

15:35Pick less.
15:36It's that easy.
15:39All right, well, Gary, from your perspective,
15:41before we talk about Jalen Brown,
15:43because we have a whole section on him in this episode,
15:46what has stood out to you in Paris overall, basketball-wise?
15:53It just seems to be a very close team, together team.
15:59And the second best team is probably Germany.
16:02I think people were talking about, oh, France,
16:04when they get Gobert and Wimby.
16:08And that hasn't worked out all that well.
16:10France has not looked good against Germany.
16:12Now, they look good against Canada.
16:14Everybody was talking about Canada,
16:15because Canada has literally had 10 NBA players.
16:18And another guy in their roster played in the NBA, Kim Burke.
16:21So basically, 11 NBA players.
16:25And then a guy who played on the national team before.
16:28And they end up losing.
16:29They played a bad game.
16:33And it was in Paris.
16:37So the refs were going.
16:39It was one of those international games you play.
16:41It's a road game.
16:42Everybody was cheering for France.
16:44And France got a lot of calls.
16:46And our friend Gershon Yabusele leads France with 22 points.
16:52You can blame the refs, but you also look.
16:56And it was three guys, Yabusele, a guy named Cordinier,
17:03and another guy named Lessort, who were not NBA players,
17:07who combined for 55 points.
17:10Wimby, Baton, Gobert were not good at all.
17:16Gavin Fournier, another friend of ours, had 15 points.
17:20But Canada choked it.
17:24They had their chances.
17:25And so Jamal Murray didn't look good.
17:28So that's a really disappointing finish for Canada,
17:31because they hadn't made the Olympics since 2000.
17:35They've had all this talent over the years, right?
17:38The Andrew Wiggins, and all these guys
17:40have come up the post-Vince Carter age in Toronto.
17:45And they finally got all these guys, besides Wiggins,
17:48all these guys to agree to play together.
17:51And they don't make it out of the quarterfinals.
17:55So Germany is a team.
17:57You're going to need to watch, look out,
17:58our friend Dennis Schroeder, another guy.
18:01Daniel Tyson.
18:04Yeah, right.
18:04Why did you say Schroeder first?
18:05Come on now.
18:06You know what it is.
18:09Who?
18:09You know, Tyce, baby.
18:11Tyce, Tyce, baby.
18:13Well, you said Schroeder first.
18:14Like, we were expecting Tyce first, and then Schroeder.
18:17Yeah, Tyce.
18:18I mean, they're a quality team that's
18:22played together for a while.
18:23So if they meet USA, they're going to give them some trouble.
18:28I mean, USA is good.
18:30Their only issue is, like the Celtics, they go through lapses.
18:34Against Brazil, they had a bad second quarter.
18:37Brazil got within about seven, and then they blew them out
18:41again.
18:42You can't have those lapses.
18:43You've got to lock down against either of the three teams.
18:48Serbia, Jokic is going to be, obviously, three-time MVP.
18:54That's going to be a good game.
18:56I think they'll play better.
18:57Remember, they also have Bojan Boganovic
18:59from the Atlanta Hawks, who's kind of their shooter.
19:01They have Lischich, point guard at Oklahoma.
19:05I think he's in Charlotte now.
19:08So they got some NBA guys.
19:10Team USA should beat Serbia pretty good.
19:14But I don't think this is an invincible team.
19:16When they play, all play where they are.
19:20But they can't go through lapses.
19:22And I forgot to kind of mention, another player for Team USA
19:26is taking minutes is Anthony Edwards.
19:28So he came in the second half last night against Brazil.
19:37He didn't get a lot of major minutes in the first half.
19:39And he went up there and got his 16 points.
19:41He's like, I'm getting my points.
19:44If you're going to put me in during this time of the game
19:47against Brazil or whoever, a team with no NBA players,
19:54or one, Santos, who plays two-way for the Warriors,
19:59I'm going to get my points.
20:00That's the mentality Jason needs to have.
20:02Like, I'm not saying be selfish, but be assertive.
20:06Well, I think he needs to be a little bit more selfish.
20:08I mean, when he gets in a game.
20:09And this is what happens when you get a DNPCD
20:12and you've never had one in your life.
20:14It gets in your head.
20:15When he's out there, he's thinking,
20:18I got to do the hustle plays, the effort plays.
20:20And you need to do that.
20:21But in Jason's mind, I think now,
20:23that's like all he's trying to do.
20:25And when he has opportunities to score,
20:27he's thinking way too hard about, I need to make this shot.
20:30I need to make this dunk.
20:31I need to need to need.
20:33When in fact, he's so used to just relying on just muscle
20:36memory and just making a play without giving any thought.
20:38And I blame Steve Kerr for that.
20:40I mean, I still, Gary, there's nothing in the world
20:44that you or Steve Kerr or anyone can
20:45say that can rationalize how you can let the number two
20:49score on the previous Olympic team, the number one
20:52score on a team that just won a championship,
20:54to not play a single minute in a game
20:56that you blew the team out by 26 points.
20:58Is that because you're tampering in the opposite way
21:01with the NBA?
21:02Because is he trying to mess with his mentals
21:05for the regular season?
21:07I don't know what the hell Steve Kerr was thinking.
21:10I just know that there is no way in the world
21:13you can subconsciously make that mistake.
21:16I mean, I will never, ever, ever understand
21:21how that can happen.
21:22I mean, you tell me you up by like 20, 20-ish points.
21:26You at least give him the courtesy and say,
21:28hey, look, do you want to go in now?
21:31Because we're five minutes left.
21:32Because if you want to go in now, I'll put you in there.
21:34But if not, I totally understand.
21:36At least make it seem like you're trying to play the brother.
21:39I mean, it is one of the most disrespectful things
21:42I've ever seen happen to an elite player in their prime.
21:46That's embarrassing, man.
21:48I mean, Tatum got people in the stands.
21:49He got people all over the globe thinking that he's hurt.
21:52Because you asked him, Garrett, was he OK?
21:56And he was like, I'm good.
21:57And when I saw that, I was just like, well, if he's good,
22:01what the hell you ain't playing for?
22:03Yeah.
22:05There is nothing.
22:06And like I said, Tatum is going to look.
22:10I don't know who's going to be looking to light Golden State
22:12up more, Jalen Brown or Jason Tatum.
22:15They may both go for 30 in the first half
22:17when they play Golden State.
22:19They may each go for 30.
22:22Because with Jalen Brown, that's a completely different story.
22:26But Tatum is absolute unequivocal disrespect.
22:30He's earned the right to play in the damn Olympics.
22:34He just won a damn championship.
22:36He was a leading scorer on a team that just won an NBA title.
22:42Steve Kerr is on a different list right now for me.
22:46And it ain't a good list.
22:48And I suspect that he's on a list with Jason and Jalen too.
22:56I don't know that list.
22:57Me and Jay Crotty.
22:59That's right.
23:00The Jay Crotty list.
23:01It's the suckers.
23:02The suckers.
23:03You know what it reminds me of?
23:05I'm sorry, Kwanee.
23:06This might be before your time.
23:08But the last season of Different World.
23:10I got a little bit of a collapse after I heard that.
23:12The last season of Different World where, what's her name?
23:16Jennifer Lewis was a professor.
23:18She was like the dean or whatever.
23:20And she'd be like, you are on my list,
23:22like she would say to all the students cutting up.
23:26The last season of Different World
23:28when it was like Dwayne was a professor and all that.
23:30It was like, it just reminds me.
23:32So Sharai got a list.
23:34You are on my list.
23:36I do.
23:36For the record, there's a spinoff
23:37in the works for Different World.
23:40And it's going to follow Dwayne and Whitney's daughter.
23:43That was announced on Wednesday.
23:45Little prop for my time, I'm going to loop.
23:48So in other words, we're going to bring Kwanee Generation
23:51into the mix now.
23:52Exactly.
23:53She's going to learn about that.
23:56But, yeah.
23:58I just can't wait till the Celtics play Golden State.
24:01That, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh.
24:04It's on his list.
24:05Circled on the calendar.
24:06It's summertime and there's no better way
24:08to spend it than at the ballpark.
24:10Popcorn, soda, hot dogs.
24:13Mm, I'm starting to get hungry just thinking about it.
24:15Those games create lasting memories.
24:17And getting to those games is a lot easier
24:19with Game Time, which is an authorized ticket
24:21marketplace of Major League Baseball, which
24:23makes getting tickets faster and easier.

24:48But keeping an eye on the AL East
24:51is a really big deal for me, as you can imagine.
24:53I know I can go to the Game Time app
24:55and jump on the best deals quickly.
24:57The color coding options at the ballpark
24:59make it super easy to see what are
25:00the best deals for the best seats from all the seats

25:46Well, it's good to hear that Jalen is not necessarily
25:50thinking about that just this moment,
25:52because this past week it was announced
25:54that his Black Wall Street of Boston plan
25:57is officially in the works.
25:58And as we've known before, the reporting
26:00said that the goal was to generate
26:02$5 billion in generational wealth for communities
26:04of color, specifically in Boston.
26:07After he found out the stat about the Black medium Boston
26:12household made, I think it was $8?
26:14$8, yeah.
26:15Yeah, compared to the white family in the city.
26:18So let's talk about that, because obviously it's not
26:21necessarily basketball, but it's something that he's been doing
26:25over the last few years.
26:26And he launched Boston Creator Incubator plus Accelerator
26:29on August 1st, which is also collaborating
26:32with Drew Holiday and his wife there, Lauren.
26:34His wife, also athlete, Lauren.
26:37They're a JLH, Social Impact Fund.
26:40And they're going to sponsor 10 entrepreneurs in the greater
26:43Boston creative economy.
26:45Three-year worth, up to $100,000.
26:48We'll get also more than 150,000 space and work spaces.
26:55A lot of things.
26:56There are a lot of things that they get, essentially.
26:58And there's a website you can apply at beexchange.org.
27:01But what do you two think about this plan
27:04and him actually being a man of his word?
27:07Well, I think that's the one thing that I appreciate.
27:11I mean, you hear a lot of people talk about, yeah,
27:13we want to build up community X, Y, Z, 1, 2, 3.
27:16And you never really see any tangible signs,
27:19or you see very few tangible signs
27:21with very kind of spotty details of what that looks like.
27:25Jalen Brown has put his money where his mouth is.
27:28And that's really important.
27:30And it's coming from a guy who hasn't always
27:34been the most loved player on the Celtics team,
27:38particularly by this community.
27:40And so he's showing, I think, folks that it's not about him.
27:45It's about doing for others and having
27:46the means to do for others.
27:48And I love the fact that he brought Drew Holiday
27:51into the mix.
27:51Because when you're trying to do these type of really just
27:56trying to create generational wealth
27:58and bringing about systemic change
28:00on a very broad, big picture scale,
28:03it can't be done by one person.
28:05It has to be multiple people investing
28:08in that vision and that dream.
28:10And I suspect, as this thing kind of plays out over time,
28:15you're going to start seeing more people involved in this.
28:18And that's how you really bring about change.
28:20Because change, it may start with one person,
28:23but it can't end there.
28:24And I think Jalen understands the importance of building,
28:28basically, allies for this vision to come to fruition.
28:33And again, I applaud him for the efforts that he's making.
28:37This is not going to be an easy thing to do.
28:40Because at some point, there will
28:41be pushback from some folks who think that this is not
28:45a good thing for Boston.
28:46It's not already.
28:47Right, right.
28:48But Jalen, the beautiful thing about Jalen
28:51is, one, he's got a contract that's going to keep him
28:53in Boston for a while.
28:55Two, he's got the economic resources
28:57to basically push this through if it hits a financial snag,
29:02which is really important.
29:03And three, I think that there's going to be more and more,
29:08like I said, more individuals, I think,
29:09getting on the bandwagon and supporting these efforts.
29:13And the biggest thing that has to happen
29:15is there has to be change.
29:16There has to be that one or two breakthrough individuals that
29:20can really turn it from being this dream into a reality
29:25for not just the folks who benefit directly
29:28from these grants, but just for society as a whole.
29:32I give Jalen lots of props for what he's doing.
29:38I think it's great.
29:39It's been a year since he signed a contract
29:42and made that announcement that he was going to work to kind
29:47of close the wealth gap disparity between Black
29:51communities and the white community
29:53or other underrepresented communities in Boston.
29:56And he's putting his money where his mouth is, like Shiraz said.
29:59And he's got a plan.
30:02And instead of coming up with a bunch of ideas and no plan,
30:05he took a year and figured out, OK, what's
30:08the next thing I can take a step forward?
30:10And now this is it.
30:11And you've got to applaud him for putting his not only money
30:15where his mouth is, but putting a foot in this community,
30:19in the Boston community, and saying, listen,
30:21I'm going to leave an impact on the floor and off the floor.
30:25I'm not going to be one of those players who
30:27plays 15 years in the sea and offers absolutely nothing
30:31off the floor, no community programs.
30:34I always get reminded in this situation
30:39of the great Reggie Lewis, the late Reggie Lewis,
30:42who put his imprint on the community in the short time
30:46when he was at Northeastern.
30:48Then he was with the Boston Celtics
30:50until, obviously, tragically passed away.
30:52But I just think of that.
30:54Obviously, we had the Reggie Lewis Center downtown,
30:57Roxbury.
30:58And he made such an impact.
31:01Thanksgiving turkey giveaways, that type of thing.
31:05Take an interest.
31:07And he was from Baltimore.
31:08So he wasn't a guy who was born and raised in Boston.
31:11He adopted this city, just like Jalen is.
31:14And you have to applaud that, because there's
31:17a lot of guys who come into a city,
31:20play, and the minute that the season's over,
31:23they're back home.
31:24And they report the day before training camp
31:28starts to that city.
31:29And whatever, they're not giving their heart to that city
31:32that they play in.
31:33And Jalen's different.
31:35And you have to applaud that.
31:36You have to applaud his perseverance,
31:38all the criticism he took.
31:40And people, oh, man, you're just talking.
31:42Well, now you've got a plan in action,
31:44collaborating with Drew Holiday, which I think is fantastic.
31:48And I'm sure other players around the league
31:50who might be from Boston or other players in the Celtics
31:53and maybe the Celtics organization
31:55will eventually get involved with contributing financially
31:59to his plan.
32:00So a good job for Jalen.
32:02You've got to love it.
32:05And I know he was not happy about not making Team USA,
32:09even getting an invite, getting a text message from Grant Hill.
32:12He's kind of been going back and forth with Grant Hill
32:15with the conspiracy thing.
32:16And he says, basically, I know where the bodies are buried.
32:19I've been in the Players Association
32:21for five, six years now.
32:23I know how this thing goes.
32:24So I don't think it reflects well on Grant Hill
32:29to keep acting like it wasn't something personal.
32:34As to why he didn't make Team USA,
32:36I think Grant needs to just kind of quit saying that.
32:40Because obviously, it wasn't basketball.
32:44It was more than basketball.
32:46You got an NBA Finals MVP, Eastern Conference Finals MVP,
32:52one of the top players in the league.
32:54And he can't even get a sniff.
32:58But I think for Jalen to shake that off,
33:01I know he went to Spain last week
33:05and did the Players Association camp where he works out.
33:08He kind of keep it moving and keep his plan going.
33:11And I'm sure he'll, like Jason, he'll
33:14pay some debts back to the people
33:17he feels like he needs to when he gets
33:19on the floor this coming season.
33:21But for him to lock in on that plan, that financial plan,
33:24and come up with a cohesive plan.
33:26And it took a year.
33:27That's how long these things take.
33:28It's not two or three months.
33:31I think that's a good, good, admirable thing
33:33from Jalen Brown.
33:35Me, Jalen, and Jason need to compare notes
33:37and see what's going on with this.
33:40We need to compare notes to see on our list.
33:42I love that Sherrod has a list now.
33:45I am legitimately salty.
33:47I know, I know.
33:49I'm so salty about that, because it's just not right.
33:53It's not right.
33:57Like Double Z says, Sherrod, the world ain't right.
34:00Exactly.
34:01Dale Davis, the world ain't right.
34:03You used to tell me all the time, Sherrod,
34:05the world ain't right, man.
34:06The world ain't right.
34:07The world ain't right.
34:08You always remember that.
34:11I have a shameless plug, but also a flex.
34:14I interviewed Matt Damon and Casey Affleck.
34:17That's where I'm from.
34:18Rubbing his eyeballs.
34:19And Hunk Chowdhury went to see you.
34:21Guess what?
34:21Guess what, Karani?
34:22Did you know that?
34:23I did, too.
34:25You did what?
34:26You did what?
34:28For the movie that they did.
34:29You interviewed them?
34:30Yeah.
34:31So where is it?
34:32At Brandy.com.
34:33I interviewed them for the movie that they did.
34:35You know what?
34:36Gary, did you interview them?
34:39No, I didn't.
34:40I got left off the memo.
34:42Dang, that was leaving Gary off the memo.
34:44Now Gary has a list.
34:46What's he been getting?
34:47Exactly.
34:48Now we're on Gary's list.
34:51All right.
34:52Well, that being said, because I have to go read it,
34:53so I feel like I failed you.
34:55But did you talk to them about the Celtics at all?
34:58And I'm not saying that to be funny.
34:59Not much.
35:00Not much.
35:01Because we had to talk about the movie.
35:02Yeah, that's fair.
35:03I snuck in a question by mentioning
35:05that they had Fenway Park in the movie.
35:07But the question was about the Celtics
35:09and watching them win Bayonetta 18.
35:11If you don't know, Casey and Ben are from Massachusetts,
35:14hardcore Boston fans.
35:16But one thing that we were talking about
35:18was the fact that Boston, you know,
35:20they were saying how the Boston team is so lovable.
35:22And I was like, honestly, on social media
35:24they get a lot of hate.
35:25But Matt Damon disagreed.
35:27He was like, yeah, but this team is really likable.
35:29But to your point, Sherrod, clearly there's
35:32still some kind of animosity towards Celtics.
35:37But it's weird, because obviously, like you said,
35:39they like Drew and Derrick.
35:40So maybe it's specifically that duo
35:42that people have hate against.
35:44Yeah, but that's all right.
35:46It's not great.
35:47They'll have their list.
35:48I'll have mine.
35:50We'll make like a Venn diagram of our list
35:53and just see who's in the middle.
35:55And when the revenge is gotten.
35:58But that was also a plug to make sure you
35:59read Sherrod's article, Watch Mine.
36:02And of course, follow everything
36:03Gary's been doing in Paris.
36:04All the reporting he's been doing.
36:06And Gary, we need you to get to the bottom of what's
36:08going on with Tatum, because we're depending on you.
36:11We already know what it is.
36:13I know, but we want proof of evidence.
36:15Tatum's going to take care of it in the regular season.
36:17Don't worry.
36:20All right, well, that's all for this week's episode
36:21of the Big 3 NBA podcast.
36:23Gary has a lot to do.
36:24Again, he's in Paris in the early mornings.
36:28You might have to go get a cigarette outside.
36:29That's what they do, right?
36:30Smoke a cigarette and go right or something?
36:34Everybody smokes out here.
36:36Everybody smokes in Paris.
36:37My goodness.
36:38Please don't come back with a smoking cigarette habit.
36:40You can't go anywhere without the restaurants,
36:44without the people next to you smoking.
36:47Gary's going to come back with a new rag and a cigarette
36:48as well.
36:49Right?
36:49Yeah.
36:50I ain't no smoking.
36:52Not cute, but yeah, everybody smokes out here.
36:56Smoking is bad, kids, if you're watching this.
36:58It's official BSA.
36:59Do not smoke.
37:00Not a good look.
37:01Not a good look.
37:02Or smell.
37:03Or smell.
37:04Exactly.
37:05No, no smell.
37:05You're right.
37:06Well, until next week.
37:08You'll be on that list.
37:11Don't be on that list.
37:12That's this week's takeaway, the Big 3 NBA podcast.
37:15H-Drop weekly.
37:16Gary Washburn.
37:17I'm Quanie Lewis.
37:18Thank you for watching and listening.
