00:42Pritchard, yes, he had 21 points and six assists, but the story of the game for me,

00:49before we get to individual and, you know, analysis, if you will,

00:54the Celtics were 37 for 98 from the floor. Would you like to guess out of the 98,

01:01how many of those were three-pointers? 30. 61. Okay. There were 17 for 37 on twos and 20

01:12for 61 on threes. Welcome to basketball in the 21st century, folks. I'll say no more.

01:22It, nothing's going to change. Those of us who, you know, hate the three, nothing's going to

01:28change, but just so you know, that's the way it was. Okay. Pritchard had a good game. The

01:34regulars played most only in the first half, as a rule. The menists played Tatum, Brown and White,

01:4019 minutes each. Cornette started because of course we had neither, and Al was held out.

01:46Yeah. 21. Holiday 12 and 17 people played in this game. Right. So it's an exhibition game.

01:54They were down at the half and they came back and they won it. And, and just let you know,

02:00it was really weird at the very, very, very end. They had the score wrong. The score was wrong.

02:06And, and they had, they were, they had to be pleasantly surprised that they were ahead.

02:10They, they credited on the, the Abu Dhabi scorekeeper, a clock writer,

02:15who had credited the wrong, scored at the wrong person, at wrong team at one point, late. Anyway,

02:20they wind up winning 107-103. By the way, Djokic played 17 minutes and had 14 points,

02:28eight rebounds and two assists. Nothing to be gleaned from it in the long run. But the,

02:32if you're trying to make the team, the two guys that did themselves a favor, you know,

02:37if they try to sit on that bench or at least be on the 15-man roster were Jordan Walsh and

02:44J.D. Davis. They both look pretty good. And, but the, the, the guy who did not do himself any

02:49favors was first round pick. And I'm a guy I'm, I have a proprietary interest in, I must admit,

02:56all cards on the table, Baylor Shireman, because he came, started out college at my new favorite

03:03school that's not Boston College, South Dakota State. Right, right, right, right, right, right.

03:07Yeah. West of the Alleghenies. And his first shot hit the side of the backboard and the second shot

03:14was an airball. So he hopefully got all the bad stuff out of his system in the first game.

03:20Yeah, he had some nerves, Bob. He had some nerves.

03:23He is the first round pick. And I do expect him to come back and be on the opening day roster,

03:28just because. But we'll see. Main would beckon, of course. What do we glean by it? Nothing, you

03:34know, nothing in the big picture at all. I only saw the second half and I tuned it at halftime.

03:39There was one lament, I think from, from Scal, Brian Scalabrini, backboard in the saddle,

03:46was they gave up too many easy inside baskets in the first half, presumably to Jokic, but not just

03:50to Jokic. Oh, well, he flashed himself in a, in a like a back to the future mode, just so you know,

03:56down the road. DeAndre Jordan, he threw his body around pretty well for Denver. So just so you know,

04:02he's with Denver and there you go. But that's it. The Live Lifter, it's the first game of the NBA

04:07season. But I got to say this. I was one of the many great unwashed that had not done my political

04:16homework. And it is a little bit unnerving now, disturbing when you, when you are informed

04:22that the NBA is in, we know they're already in bed with China and, you know, commercially,

04:30which is shaky, to be honest. But the UAE, the game was in Abu Dhabi and in the United Arab

04:36Republic, Arab Emirates. A lot of people very upset about this. And the Boston Globe ran an

04:42op-ed piece about this, the politics of it all. They are helping fund a terrible situation in Sudan.

04:49And people better look it up. Sudan is maybe the worst humanitarian crisis on the globe at the

04:54moment, which is saying a lot, by the way, if you think about it. They may be the absolute worst

04:59humanitarian crisis of homelessness and displaced people. And the UAE is complicit in this,

05:08according to what I am reading and only just informed recently. And, you know, it's not,

05:14so I'm uncomfortable. I'll just say this. I'm uncomfortable with the idea that the NBA

05:18and that, unfortunately, the Celtics were involved in a game in the UAE at this particular

05:22point in time. It's the third year in a row they've been here. I didn't realize this.

05:26We weren't paying attention. I mean, it's, I assume it's, I assume it's followed the money.

05:31I, naturalement, I just want to be honest with you saying that I'm not comfortable with this.

05:36And I wish to say, I just wish in second thought the Celtics had never been involved.

05:41All right, I'm off the soapbox, back to basketball. Okay, there you go. So now Derek Rose,

05:4636 years old, has called it a career. Derek Rose retired two days ago or so,

05:52and today is his 36th birthday. I mean, every word of what I'm about to say, I pontificate that I

06:01have seen every great player in the last 65 years. I'll cut it off at 65. I probably could go to 70,

06:08but I'll go with 65. I've seen them all. And this man in his, in his collegiate prime,

06:17and in the early NBA prime, was an elite player who you had to see in person to appreciate.

06:26You don't make that statement about too many people. Why do I say that? I'm about to tell you

06:30that I was lucky enough to, I don't remember, I sought out consciously for whatever reason,

06:35the year he was, the one year in college he had, which is 07, 08 at Memphis. He,

06:43I went to his regional, so I saw him play a couple of times, and it wasn't just one. I saw him play

06:47a couple of times. And then in the final four, so I may have played him three times in person.

06:52And you had to see him in person to understand the uniqueness of this guy. Now there have been

06:58any number of guys who were rocket ships up and down the floor. We've all seen them, you know,

07:03great ones. And Iverson was a rocket ship. A lot of guys are rocket ships up and down the floor

07:07in a straight line basis. And that's fine. This guy, there were two things that distinguish him

07:12going to the basket. And frankly, unlike anyone I've ever seen. Okay. The two things together.

07:19One, it's an illusion. Now the first one's an illusion. All right. But he created this illusion

07:25like no one else. When he went to the basket, it was almost as if he had an extra gear.

07:30It downshifted. And at the end, it's like late life on a fastball.

07:33Right, right, right. Yeah.

07:35Yeah. Late life on the drive. And then one final little thrust going to the hoop. And the illusion

07:40of it, I've never seen anyone that struck me that way. And that's why I mean you had to see him in

07:43person. That would never come off on television. But I was fortunate enough to be sitting close

07:48enough to the court to go, Oh my God, I've never felt that since I've never had a sensation like

07:52this with a guy. Never, ever. And I've seen everybody since the last 65 years. Well, now

07:57then it was only about, you know, 49. But anyway, the point is he had that. And the other thing he

08:02did, which is verifiable, is that he could go up in the air and move laterally in the air

08:09quicker and farther than anyone I've ever seen either. So he'd go up on the left side of the

08:13basket and go up and he'd finish over on the right farther in a way that not many people

08:19I've ever seen could do. Very, very, very, very few. So he was an extraordinary talent.

08:24Now consider a one-year college basketball, his team was 38-2. They went to the championship game,

08:30one of the great championship games. And they got it wrapped up, I thought. I mean, we all thought.

08:34And then Mario Chalmers of Kansas makes a miracle shot going left to right from the top of the key

08:41to tie it up and send him into overtime. And Kansas beats him by seven in overtime.

08:46One reason being Memphis, which was tradition with them, were horse bleep free throw shooters.

08:51And if they had made their free throws in general, they would have won the game without

08:54ever worrying about going overtime. But Rose, that was his one. So he goes to the final four

08:58and goes to the championship game. He goes to Chicago. He's a rookie at his hometown.

09:03He's from Simeon Academy in Chicago. He's a rookie of the year. In his third year,

09:10he leads them to a 62-20 record. And he is the MVP at age 22 years and seven months,

09:20the youngest ever MVP. That's how good Derrick Rose was.

09:24He was Hall of Fame bound. No doubt.

09:28He was Springfield. He could start preparing his speech. And then the next year, they go,

09:34let's see what the record is next year. Oh, 50-16. And on the first year, that year of the 62-20,

09:47they lost in the conference finals. First, they won the conference. They won a division.

09:52Second year, they won the division again. And they lose in the first round of Philadelphia,

09:57six games. But guess what? They lost. He tore his ACL.

10:02Now, that was in 2012. And we're talking about a career that ended now in the 23-24 season.

10:10He was never the same again.

10:11Was there a second ACL? Were there two?

10:15I think another. Yeah, there may have been.

10:16I mean, he had multiple surgeries.

10:18Oh, he had multiple.

10:19But he was never the same. You're right.

10:20Never the same. Done at 22 years, seven months as an MVP with an express lane to Springfield.

10:30Oh, he was amazing. He was the next great player. I remember, I mean, I used to go Larry

10:36Magic and you go Michael and LeBron. And I don't know if he was going to be LeBron. I can't say

10:44that. But this guy was well on his way to being Iverson.

10:49Oh, God, yes. It was going to be even better.

10:52He would, I mean, at that point, you would have projected him to have the kind of career that

10:57Curry's wind up having in terms of.

10:59Yeah, Curry, Duran.

11:00All said and done, going to be in the top 10 discussion.

11:03Right.

11:04That's what you would have thought at 22 years of age when he's MVP with this extraordinary

11:08physical gift that he was robbed. And so from that point on, he winds up getting traded

11:14first out of Chicago. And since he left Chicago, he went New York, Cleveland, Minnesota, Detroit,

11:20New York a second time in Memphis and hung around and had his moments and all that. But it was never,

11:27ever, ever the same.

11:28Now, he loved to play. And I didn't think he was even going to stay in the league.

11:31We can't. We have to mention that there's a taint in the collegiate world and that they were

11:37stripped of their runner up because it was found out that alleged, and I guess never disproven,

11:46that he had someone else took his SAT test just to get into Memphis.

11:51Was it there also some money that changed hands?

11:53Oh, God, you know.

11:55I mean, for some reason, the number of $500,000 is in my head.

12:02And later on, there was a sexual harassment charge.

12:06Oh, I didn't. I don't remember that.

12:09Not being convicted. Okay. So I'm just trying, you know, and I'm not saying he's one of nature's

12:15noblemen. I mean, all that. But we'll stick with the basketball. He was an extraordinary talent.

12:21And he should be recognized for that. That's all.

12:23He was.

12:24Career was robbed.

12:25No, you're right. I mean, it is what, when it comes to the talent and on the floor stuff,

12:29it is. I'm just thinking, I can't think of anyone else that I've ever said,

12:36you had to see him in person, feel it, see it. And I was fortunate enough to be able to do that

12:40when he had the gift.

13:35How do you feel about the Knicks, Bob?

13:37I'm bullish on the Knicks.

13:39And I mean, you were bullish before the trade.

13:42Yeah, bullish before the trade. Towns, my one question, now the Towns, we talked with Jeff

13:47Goodman and he goes back with everybody. I think he went back with Dr. Nesmith,

13:52but he goes back with everybody. And he points out the Towns, there's been one allegation about

13:59him on the court. He's soft, maybe, you know, not a little soft. And he's been an underachiever

14:06in the playoffs. That is fact. Okay. So there you go. But on paper, he is the quintessential

14:12modern big man in that he is equally adept at scoring inside or outside. He's a 40% career

14:18three-point shooter. Now that should get people in the Boston Celtic fans a little bit concerned.

14:24And I speculate that he might be able to, what I think what they would get, would like from him,

14:29is to do for them what Brzezinkus did for the Celtics in terms of score place floor spacing

14:34and extra threat and all that. I think he could perform a very similar role for them.

14:39Now, the one question I had that now I'm going to address is, did not remember there was some

14:45friction between he and Thibodeau when Thibodeau was his coach in Minnesota.

14:48And that seemed like forever ago, though, right?

14:51Well, there was. But according to both of them, let bygones be bygones. And in today's New York

14:57Post, I read that, quote, whatever else might have, this is by Stefan Bondi, whatever else

15:05might have happening, been happening behind the scenes, Townes revealed last season he and Thibodeau,

15:10quote unquote, squashed their beef years ago in a one-on-one conversation. A source said Thibodeau

15:16was fully behind acquiring Townes, blah, blah, blah, blah. OK. And now his take Townes as of

15:22yesterday and from training camp in Charleston, South Carolina, saying good things about Thibodeau,

15:29appreciating his first practice. And he said, I think it gives us, that's he and Thibodeau,

15:33a little bit of a head start. I know the offense that he runs. I know the way he likes to play

15:37defense. And I know what he expects from his players. I just think it gives us a little bit

15:41of a head start. So I'm putting the Celtic fans on notice even more now that the Knicks and the

15:49Celtics are going to duke it out this year. It's going to be fun. Well, how much of

15:57the Minnesota disappointment in the playoffs is on him, just him? I mean, what about Anthony Edwards?

16:03Oh, you can't. Well, but this goes, this predates Edwards. He's around nine years.

16:07We're talking about. No, no, no. I'm like last year, right?

16:10Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Minnesota was off to a great start.

16:14They may have been the most disappointed, the floppiest, the floppiest.

16:17I couldn't believe it. I couldn't believe it.

16:19Yeah. The least, the most underachieving team of the playoff based on what they have shown.

16:23There's no doubt. I thought they were going to go to the.

16:25I was really big on them going into playoffs.

16:27Me too. And yeah, so that's right. So,

16:30OK, well, you don't think that will be brought up when the playoffs start?

16:34Oh, it's going to be brought up a lot. That's why, you know, when they made the move

16:38from Minnesota's perspective and there are many who think Minnesota got the better end of the deal.

16:45Oh, yeah. Well, I know there are people that feel that way. Of course, part of part of that is

16:49Steven Senso has really become an interestingly very good player, had a great.

16:54Right. So I'm not so. So I go every year.

16:59Yeah. So I just wonder from Minnesota, it was addition by subtraction.

17:03They needed to send a message. Maybe the player needed a change of environment,

17:07whatever. Right. I think Minnesota felt what we did last year was not good enough.

17:12So somebody's going. Yeah, well, I think you're right. And I did pick up,

17:16you know, a guy's been in an all star game, maybe or even two in Randall,

17:21whether you like him or not. And I, I go back to Kentucky being very impressed with him.

17:26Right. And Stephen Senso is the wild card here because, as I just said, I think he keeps seem

17:32to be getting better year by year. And he really lost him two years ago in Milwaukee and then he

17:36came to New York and had an even better year. And now here he comes. It gives him a real good

17:42dimension, I think. So now we'll see. But I mean, does Towns cause matchup problems for the Celtics?

17:50Well, he's going to they're going to have to honor him. You know, when the Knicks,

17:54you played the Knicks with what Hartenstein and who's, you know, gone as a free agent and it was

17:59useful to them and useful, but not because he was a big scorer. And Mitchell Robinson,

18:04whose whole race on Detroit is just blocking shots and, you know, and not he's not out there

18:09to score. You could obviously you can play a different kind of defense and they got a guy

18:14that has to be honored. He's got to be honored. Well, that's what I'm thinking because

18:20he's not going to stand out there and shoot threes all night when he's a 40 percent shooter,

18:23which means that somebody's got to go guard him if it's Brzezinski. You know, I mean,

18:26I think it can theoretically I can't wait to see it. Theoretically, I think it makes a big

18:32difference. I think it could cause. Look, I'm not I'm not sounding the alarm, OK? I still think the

18:40Celtics are going to win the East. I think the Celtics, if they do what they're supposed to do,

18:46can win it all again. I think this makes the East a little bit more difficult because of the

18:52matchup situation. Look, there's nothing like seeing a game live. I mean, watching it on TV

20:39We all know game management, you know, Porzingis does. So during the regular season,

20:45you know, Porzingis doesn't play a lot. I mean, I don't expect him to play a lot.

20:49So then you've got Al. Now, obviously, if you get into the if you get into the playoffs,

20:53it's a different story. It's all hands on deck. But what I'm just saying is during a regular

20:57season, when these two teams match up, I think he's going to cause the Celtics some problems.

21:03I think it's very possible. I disagree. I don't agree.

21:07And I think that's why they made the move. I think they made the move. They said,

21:10this is the only way we can beat the Celtics, because we need a seven four and a seven footer,

21:1640 percent shooter that can score in and out. They got to make Porzingis move.

21:22They got to make the dude play defense. Al we know is long in the tooth.

21:28I think that's why that is exactly why they made the move.

21:30It's an excellent point. And history tells us that don't that teams do react to other

21:35teams in that manner. It's the Celtics. I can tell you right now, the Celtics

21:40were dying to find a Andrew Toney deterrent. It didn't say it was what I found it with DJ,

21:46you know, that they got. But until then, he was torturing them, torturing them. And then,

21:51you know, he's still to be still a bit never. He never tortured them again.

21:55Once DJ showed up and I'm sure that was very much part of the thinking because they knew that the

22:00obstacle that they had in the East was was Philly, even though they lost Milwaukee in 83, they were

22:06mitigating circumstances that a lot of mitigating circumstances in that Milwaukee sweep of the

22:10Celtics in 83. They knew the real foe was Philly and they addressed it. There's no doubt. I mean,

22:16and you know, I understand you have Philadelphia. It all depends if the big guys get

22:21healthy with the Sixers. But even though I don't. Well, the Sixers are better.

22:27They are. And they're deeper. They're legitimately deeper. People had to pay

22:30attention. They picked up, you know, guys that can get out there and play.

22:34You know, they picked up some and Andre Drummond, you know, who can still rebound. So,

22:40yeah, they're going to be better, too. But it's good. The teams are going after

22:44the one after the Celtics. That's clearly. Yeah.

22:47You know, like Tibbs, like, you know, Tibbs. I mean, you know, you were around the guy.

22:52Yes. How do you think he has changed?

22:56And why he's so good with his team? It seems that he's not. And I don't know if he burned

23:01out people in Minnesota, burned out people in Chicago, but it seems like has he mellowed?

23:07Well, he's in his 60s now, you know, and I mean, really, and he's been around a long time now in

23:11the league. And we don't know how he's behind the closed doors. But he yet a day, though,

23:17it's interesting, is he he was he was angry. Can't tell that in print. But he was willing

23:23to address that he's not changing his philosophy about about the playing time. And, you know,

23:28he's been criticized for playing his regulars too much. And he said nothing's going to change.

23:33I'm going to play my regulars the way I'm going to play him. And and so don't think so. That's

23:40the one thing he hasn't changed in that regard. He's going to have he's going to be some heavy

23:45minutes for some of his starters. And he doesn't give a damn to take a chance. He's not a big fan

23:50of the load. But was he not buying into the load management thing the way a lot of other people?

23:54Right, right, right, right, right. Well, Bob, you saw my star in the background.
