00:00The Big 3 NBA Podcast is powered by Prizepix and the Game Time app.
00:25Welcome to another edition of the Big 3 NBA Podcast.
00:28I'm your host, H-Rob Blakely, joined by the one, the only Outback Jack, a.k.a. Joe Sway.
00:35Yeah, this is what the summertime edition of the podcast look like.
00:40You just never know where cats are going to be showing up from.
00:43Yeah, it's so true.
00:44Yo, Outback Jack though, that's a great reference.
00:47I stay in the crib where it's nice and cool, tempered, Joe Sway.
00:50He's getting some of that fresh outdoor air.
00:53Is that a deal?
00:56Well, we still have it, Sherrod.
00:58Summer's over.
00:59It's pretty much, you know, we got a couple of weeks, but that's about it.
01:02Yeah, you try to get it in.
01:04I see you.
01:07It's been one of those summers.
01:08Yeah, yeah.
01:09Spending time, you know, a lot of time at my parents' place and just, you know, try to soak in the summer as much as I can, whatever's left of it.
01:14I ain't mad at you.
01:15I ain't mad at you.
01:16I kind of like the comfortable confines with Sherrod on my back here, Sherrod on the camera, and all that good stuff, because that's my teammate.
01:24And speaking of teammates, we're about to see the superpower, a.k.a.
01:29Boston Celtics, get going again here.
01:32The schedules are out.
01:34And some interesting matchups.
01:37I kind of like what the NBA is doing.
01:39They're doing what they typically do.
01:41They try to get the juiciest matchup sooner rather than later.
01:44Right off the bat, you know, the one team in the Eastern Conference that I think we've been talking the most about in the offseason as being the biggest threat to the Boston Celtics is the New York Knicks.
01:53And lo and behold, who do they open up with?
01:55The New York Knicks.
01:57So I'm looking forward to that first game for obvious reasons, and I think most Celtics fans are.
02:02But beyond that, Josue, what are some matchups that you're looking forward to seeing early on in the season?
02:10The Knicks are definitely one of them.
02:12I'm surprised the Celtics aren't heading to MSG earlier.
02:15You know, I feel like we usually see that, you know, before Christmas or so, which is even better, if you ask me, because you want to get that matchup around just before the All-Star break.
02:22What guys have, you know, they're not just a week or two into the season.
02:26You know what I mean?
02:27They're ready to show you what they got.
02:28And I think New York is certainly on the top of the list of being one of those teams that really wants to send a message to the Boston Celtics throughout the entire regular season.
02:35However, that message just resonates, you know what I mean?
02:38It resonates on another level when it's like right before the All-Star break.
02:41So I think that's the game I'm looking forward to most.
02:43You know, I just think I think the New York Knicks, they believe it.
02:48But but seeing it as a whole nother thing.
02:49So, you know, if they were able to put that put together a solid win against the Celtics, I mean, not only would it send a message, but it'll certainly set the stage for what I'm what I'm anticipating to see a best of seven series between these two teams.
03:00Man, we didn't get it last year.
03:01The basketball gods didn't give it to us.
03:03You know, guys are banged up.
03:05And, you know, I mean, but I mean, overall, though, was right.
03:08Were they really ready, though?
03:09I mean, I still think the Celtics in that, whereas you have another season, another training camp, another year to go over what went wrong last year.
03:18Much stronger New York Knicks team.
03:19I mean, I prefer that now, you know, compared to what we would have seen in a hypothetical Eastern Conference Final Series last year.
03:25So I'm mostly I'm most excited about about that matchup for sure for the Celtics.
03:30Well, first of all, let let me give a shout out to the NBA for putting some respect in that crown by having the Celtics open up at home versus writing up on the road against you, because I'm telling you right now, if that game would have been in New York City, the Celtics, I would write whatever the whatever they're favored by.
03:48I'm going over.
03:49I will take the over no matter what that number is, because if you tell the Celtics, hey, you want you want an NBA title and you're going to begin the season on the road against you're probably the one biggest rival you'll have.
04:01Oh, the team that had a little bit of a chip on the shoulder that just got bigger and bigger and bigger.
04:06It's going to be even bigger.
04:07So at least the Knicks, I think, have a fighting chance with the game being in Boston and it being, you know, ring ceremony night.
04:14And that's always an emotional night for players, no matter what they say that, you know, you get the ring and then you just play ball.
04:20It's not quite that easy to just separate yourself.
04:24I haven't talked with guys who've won NBA titles and they've talked about what that night is like.
04:29It's an emotional because, I mean, it's the tangible point in which all that you accomplished a year ago that you've had this entire summer to kind of get out your system.
04:37You got one more night to enjoy it.
04:40You got one more moment to just embrace the fact that you are the baddest of the baddest.
04:45And everyone in the world is recognizing how good you were in that particular season when it mattered most.
04:52So I'm glad that they're not beginning the season on the road, because that would have been just absolute.
04:58You know, I would have felt bad for the Knicks because the Knicks would have got thrashed. At least now they got a fighting chance.
05:03But the game that I am the game that I want Joe Swaye.
05:07Which one? Nope.
05:09The game that I will be absolutely glued to, whether I'm in the building or not, is when they play Golden State.
05:17That game is going to be early in the summer.
05:20And that game is not so much about just matchups and X's and O's.
05:25Full disclosure, that's the petty side of Chirag coming out.
05:29That's the petty side of Chirag getting his fix on in that game.
05:32Because for any of us who have even the slightest bit of pettiness in us and want to see folks exact revenge for folks who've done it wrong.
05:41That's the game you want to see. That's the only game that I would ever seriously think that Tatum and Jalen Brown could each have 30 in the first half.
05:50I absolutely could see that. I never I didn't even think about it like that.
05:54That's a good point, Chirag. You know, I mean, it's almost like they're going to they're going to walk into that with that with that mindset, with that.
06:00Like Chris Brown, look at me now, type of anthem bumping, you know what I mean?
06:03Like, not only are we paid, not only are we the champions, but it's a new era.
06:07It's a new day. Right. If you're Jason Tatum and Jalen Brown going up against a team that beat you in the finals two years ago.
06:13Yeah, that's a good one. Yeah, for sure. And just how things went down with the Olympics.
06:17I mean, with Tatum not playing, Jalen not making a team, it becomes an absolute petty fest.
06:26Pettypalooza is what I'm going to call that game. That's what I'm looking for.
06:30You know, the crowd's going to get Steve Kerr bad, too, man.
06:34Yeah, I didn't even think about that. Yeah, that's a great point.
06:36Yeah. Yeah. I don't know if there will ever be a coach that will get booed as much as Steve Kerr will when he's introduced as the head coach.
06:42In fact, if Eddie do it the way I think he will, he might let that introduction linger a little bit.
06:49And, you know, head coach of the Team USA gold medal winning.
06:54Yeah, he better throw that in there. Yeah, just kind of, you know, let it roll out a little bit so that folks can just kind of get kind of phoned up a little bit.
07:01Yeah, I was going to say Eddie Palladino. Yeah, he's going to do something. He's going to do something.
07:07Yeah, he's going to make it happen. He's going to spice it up, make it spicy.
07:11And again, for those who love a little petty palooza type of games, that is what I am so here for.
07:20And I know Jalen and Jason, they're going to say all the right things lead up to that game.
07:24It's just another game. We've got bigger games to win. We're trying to win another title.
07:28We don't got time to be petty about it. Yeah, you do. You always got time to be petty, especially early in the season.
07:35I might feel I might feel different if it were like in March where you're trying to establish playoff position and you got, you know,
07:42every game really matters because you want to have that top seed, all that other stuff.
07:45I get it. Then maybe a hold back on a petty just a little bit.
07:48But in November, among your first 10, 15 games of the season. Oh, petty palooza. Here we go, baby.
07:56That's what I'm talking about. Petty palooza. Yeah, for sure, man. You're going to do your victory lap and you're going to you're going to have receipts.
08:03You got to remember what just happened, what transpired, you know, a couple of months ago.
08:07You're only a couple of months removed pretty much from what happened out in Paris.
08:11I just hope, man, overall, after everything that happened with Tatum and everything, I just hope this doesn't, you know,
08:17have him second guessing to go and rejoin Team USA with or without Steve Kerr, which obviously seems like it's not going to be with Steve Kerr.
08:23But either way, like, do not let this, you know what I mean, this sour taste, you know, don't Tatum, don't fall for what's being said out there.
08:31You know, don't I mean, look, everyone criticizing Kerr. It's it's it's valid.
08:36I get it. But at the same time, I don't want Tatum to buy into that talk and be like, you know what?
08:41I don't need them. They don't need me. Like at the end of the day, Team USA doesn't necessarily need someone like Tatum.
08:46But what a what a great opportunity for him, especially because he's been there a couple of times.
08:51You know, I loved in the beginning to see someone like Kevin Durant kind of pass the torch to a younger Tatum.
08:57You know, I feel like that's still in line despite what happened this year.
09:01And I just I would love to see him bounce back, especially that it's in the US. You know what I mean?
09:05It's in L.A. Like that'd be super cool, man. So hopefully hopefully we see him in 2028.
09:09Yeah, we'll talk a bit more about that before we do that.
09:12I want to talk about just, you know, how things did go down with Tatum because, I mean, you kind of alluded to, you know, this was not exactly what he was banking on.
09:20I mean, it's kind of like, you know, you move into that, you go to the restaurant and you say your table's ready.
09:27And then you realize, wait a minute, this ain't my table. Yeah, it is. It's the kiddie table.
09:31Here you go, Jason. Oh, you know, Durant and Booker, they're going to be at the big boy table.
09:37We're going to put you at the kiddie table. You and Halliburton. Here you go.
09:42But the thing about Tyrese is eating whatever they got, he's happy.
09:46He's happy. He's good. He's chilling.
09:49And people just say, like, why can't Tatum be more like Tyrese? I'm just like, because he ain't Tyrese.
09:54Because he ain't Tyrese. That's why. That's why. Right.
09:57I mean, it's like when you're 13, 14 years old, you get to hang out with the teenagers and you're 17, 18 years old.
10:05And it ain't really hanging out with the teenagers. You're hanging out with your peers.
10:08But you're being treated like you just like you're three, four years younger than that.
10:13No, the thing about Tatum that I want us to get into a little bit is that when you look at some of the things that have come out after the Olympics,
10:21you look at some of the comments that Jeff Teague has made about how, you know, thanks, Team USA.
10:26You just just basically put the Celts in position to be a dynasty because their two best players are going to have an absolute, you know, chip upon the biggest chips you could possibly have.
10:36And then you hear Kevin Garnett, who recently spoke about this and he talked about how, you know, Tatum getting all this rest is actually going to be a good thing.
10:45Can you see the kind of year he's at? And I'm just curious, what's your take on Tatum not playing?
10:50I mean, was that a good or bad thing for him to not play as much?
10:54Honestly, I think it's a good thing, man. I mean, if we're looking at like like I alluded to earlier, you know, intensive in the sense of his future with Team USA, maybe it's a bad thing.
11:04But again, hopefully four years is a while and hopefully that's not going to be the case or at least in two years when they do the FIBA tournament.
11:10Hopefully he's involved. But in terms of his career, in terms of getting back to the NBA and defending the NBA championship, this is a great thing.
11:18You know, ounce of humble pie, so to speak. I don't think Jason Tatum's ever been benched in his life.
11:25You know, I remember a few DNPs my my my freshman year, but Tatum Tatum got no DNPs, man.
11:31Tatum's been with his dad as a coach or not. I'm sure it's never happened before.
11:37So I think it's a great teachable moment for him as an individual, you know, and to take that, like you said, that had that chip on your shoulder going into going into this season, which I feel like was already there.
11:49But it certainly is bigger now that, you know, it's being talked about and it's been such a topic amongst, you know, NBA shows, not just the first DNP, but after that.
12:00So I think that really does make an impact with Tatum, but I think it does it in a good way for sure, man.
12:05I can't wait to see him respond. And you can say the same thing about Jalen and just feeling he was snubbed for political reasons.
12:13Right. You know, the Nike thing, all these tweets he put out there, you know, on X.
12:18I just think a lot of that, you know, they respond to those type of moments.
12:23And so I'm not expecting anything different this year. But, yeah, in terms of like, is that going to be a good thing?
12:28I think it is for sure. I don't think he's going to like go into the season party or anything, man.
12:32He's going to be ready to go. And I can't wait for it because you you already know.
12:35When you're the when you're the champions, man, people want to knock your head off a little more.
12:39You know what I mean? Last year, they sort of did have a target on the back, you know, especially midway through the season and all the way to the end.
12:44But this is different. You know, this is different for sure. And it all starts in that in that first game.
12:49You know how they respond because it is an emotional night. You know, when you were talking about that earlier, I don't want to cut you off because it just hit me.
12:54I was like, man, I almost forgot about what happened in 2008. And sure, I'm sure you remember.
12:59Like I seen Paul Pierce crying his eyes out. That's not something I ever had in my bingo card.
13:05Like we don't we didn't see that side of Paul. That's the first time I've ever seen him.
13:09I mean, when he won, you know, in some of his scariest moments, when he was when he was, you know, stabbed and nearly lost his life.
13:16You know, you just always saw a serious, stern, focused Paul.
13:21And to see him just just break like that, I think is one of the best examples of guys just not, you know, I don't say not ready, but everyone responds different to that moment when it's that surreal.
13:33You got the Celtics legends that are going to be in the building when you get the actual ring.
13:38You actually pull that banner up and you're like, wow, like we did that, you know, and even though you're a few months removed, you know, I think it hits even more because of that.
13:46So it'll be interesting to see if anyone, anyone cracks a tea or anything.
13:51I don't know. I don't think this is the team. I don't mean that in a bad way.
13:54But again, I said the same thing about the 08, you know, ceremony when Pierce and Garnett were lifting that banner and Pierce couldn't couldn't keep it together.
14:01But he was bawling his eyes out and it hit even harder. You know, it gave me goosebumps seeing him like that.

15:31Prizepix, run your game.
15:34I think for guys like Paul at that point in his career, it hit a little bit hard because he knew, look,
15:39he knew Father Time was just basically right down the block.
15:42Whereas Jason Tatum and Jalen, which to me, this is the scary part about them.
15:47They haven't even really hit their peak yet. Most guys in the NBA.
15:51They ain't even 30 yet, Gerard. It's crazy.
15:53Usually they start sniffing at the top of the mountain when they get like 28, 29 years old.
15:58And these these brothers aren't even there yet. So they still have a lot of runway left in them.
16:06But the thing about Tatum is that, you know, the concern that most people have when you win an NBA title,
16:12not only is it, you know, having that motivation to come back,
16:16but just being physically ready and able to to just hit the ground running after what has been a long season.
16:23You think about training camp, preseason, regular season, playoffs, and then to top it off with the Olympics.
16:30You know, there was a stat out there that said that Tatum was one of three players to win an NBA title,
16:39make an Olympic team and win a gold medal all in the same year.
16:42You join in like LeBron James and Michael Jordan.
16:45So whenever you are thrown into that, that super elite company, it's pretty special.
16:51But to your point, Josue, the emotional thing, I think for some of these guys,
16:55it will be emotional because like Paul Pierce and those guys, these guys were told that they couldn't do it.
17:01They were told that you're good. But I don't know if Jalen and Jason, I don't know if that's going to work.
17:06And Porzingis, well, you've never really been in a winning situation.
17:09How do you go all of a sudden win now? And Drew Holiday, you got your chip in Milwaukee.
17:13But are you really going to be able to get another one?
17:16So, I mean, I think some of that may play out in a couple of guys will be more emotional.
17:21And then the other wild card in all of this is family.
17:24I mean, Jason Tatum's family is a little bit bigger now than it was when he won a chip.
17:28Sam House's family is going to be a little bit bigger.
17:30That's true.
17:32Deuce is a big brother now.
17:34Yeah. So all of a sudden, all of a sudden, you know, it hits a little differently.
17:38And, you know, somebody like Deuce, who we see all the time, I think he might get kind of emotional about that.
17:46Just because this is something that he knows means a lot to his dad.
17:49And as a kid, you just don't know how he's going to respond to that.
17:53And you've got the entire building and you know how this fan base is.
17:56I mean, for something like this, they can be ridiculously emotional.
18:00I just I vividly remember some of the images from the garden when that 08 team got their ring.
18:07And it was like, I mean, you know, it was I mean, it was one of those, like, come to Jesus moments where everyone coming to the altar boo-hooing up a storm.
18:15Lots of tears were shed. Not just Paul.
18:17You pointed out Paul, as you rightly should.
18:20But Paul was not the only one boo-hooing up in the building that night.
18:23Yeah, that's true, Sharron.
18:25But I just think he had like the he had the what do they call it?
18:31The ugly cry face or whatever they call it.
18:33Something like that.
18:34Like that's when you do it.
18:36Yeah.
18:38Like that's how you do it.
18:40They're stuttering.
18:41They're trying to stop it.
18:42Yeah.
18:43Yeah.
18:44They're trying to stop it.
18:45The body's going the other way and he's just trying to hold back.
18:47And the body's like, nah, man, I can't control it anymore.
18:50And yeah, like it was it was man red eyed and all that.
18:53But yeah, you know what?
18:54Yeah.
18:55I think out of everyone, I'm not a betting man, but if I were, I'm going to say Al.
19:00Maybe Al gets a little, you know, maybe it just hits him.
19:02Yeah.
19:03A little harder.
19:04You know what I mean?
19:05Seeing his family there and looking up being like, wow, there's that banner, you know,
19:08that he something that the Celtics franchise's front office has been talking about for eight
19:13years.
19:14He signed in 2016.
19:15Like that was the goal.
19:17That was the empty band.
19:18I was hanging there.
19:19And now he's a champion, you know, and getting that getting that hardware, making it official,
19:23putting that banner up there.
19:25Maybe he gets out.
19:26Maybe he gets it.
19:27You know what?
19:28I think that's a good pick.
19:29I think that's a good pick.
19:30But the guy I'm going to go with that's going to get emotional is Derek White.
19:34Because to me, I can see that Derek White may have the most charmed life of anyone in
19:41the NBA.
19:42When you think about this is a guy that forget about like, you know, just, you know, coming
19:48from Colorado.
19:49This brother had as many basketball scholarship offers as I did as someone who did not play
19:54basketball.
19:55We both had no division.
19:56Yeah, man.
19:57We didn't get those.
19:58Yeah.
19:59And now you look at him years later.
20:00He's got an NBA title.
20:01He's got an Olympic gold medal.
20:03He has had he's made way more money than any non high profile, you know, college prospect
20:12has ever made.
20:13Got those got those loans paid off.
20:15Right.
20:16Sure.
20:17He might be.
20:18He might be the only NBA first round pick to ever pay off their student loans with their
20:23first check.
20:24Like the first thing he did to me.
20:27I mean, everyone watching that that's on that path or was on that path, you know, like that's
20:34you.
20:35You're like, okay, that's a real.
20:37Yeah, that's a real one right there.
20:39Exactly.
20:40Exactly.
20:41Derek White.
20:42He basically he got he got into the barbecue of every student who's ever had a loan who's
20:47ever had to pay for their education.
20:49They're like, you know what?
20:50I am with Derek White.
20:52I am with you.
20:53I think he might be the one that for Derek White.
20:55Yeah.
20:56And let's be honest, Derek White, if we're being really, really honest about this, and
21:01we actually did a poll or survey.
21:03Derek White might be the most popular guy on his team.
21:05I don't know if there's another guy.
21:07I think so.
21:08Genuinely like more than Derek White.
21:10I think so.
21:11Especially seeing him on Team USA for sure.
21:13And then recently he was in the I think it was Celtics.
21:16The Celtics.com put together this incredible documentary about the season.
21:20And man, one of my favorite moments of it was him just chilling in his house with his
21:23kids.
21:24Yeah.
21:25Like, yeah.
21:26Yeah.
21:27Yeah.
21:28What was that?
21:29The most Derek White like clip you've ever seen, like the way he's interacting with
21:32his kid.
21:33Like that stuff just cracks me up.
21:34And that's just who he is, man.
21:35Like he asked one of his kids, like, oh, who's your favorite player?
21:38He like points at him.
21:39He's like me.
21:40Oh, man.
21:42Appreciate that.
21:43Like that stuff just cracks me up.
21:44And it's so Derek.
21:45It's so like he's so humble, man.
21:46So, yeah, it's pretty cool.
21:47Pretty cool.
21:49Yeah, I would hate playing against him because I can't get mad at him no matter how much
21:52I want to get mad at him.
21:54Like you just got to create stuff that doesn't even exist in order to get mad at Derek White
21:58because you have no you have literally nothing on the court that you can be angry about him
22:04about.
22:05He doesn't find you hard.
22:06He doesn't play dirty.
22:07He doesn't do any of the things that might get under your skin.
22:10He defends the hell out of you.
22:12And he does it without, again, without being a dirty player.
22:15And it's just like, how are you going to get mad at this dude?
22:17And you can't rattle him because he has no problem being like the fifth option.
22:22He's your fifth score.
22:24Who can go out there and get you 20?
22:26Go out there and get you 20.
22:28So, yeah.
22:29He's amazing.
22:30He is.
22:31But I wanted to get back to Tatum really quick because obviously, you know, this summer,
22:34as we pointed out, other than the fact that he's the highest paying player in the NBA.
22:38Now, that was a good thing.
22:40But as far as his play this summer, didn't quite go how he thought it would be.
22:45How do you think this is going to impact his approach to this season?
22:48Because, I mean, I know I've talked about it.
22:50I think he's going to be on a revenge tour.
22:52Others have said, no, he's just going to play Tatum's game because that's just Tatum going to be Tatum.
22:56What do you think this season is going to be like for Jason Tatum?
23:00I think we could be seeing or we should see his best season of his career.
23:04You know, I just think the way everything was put together last year, which I think was easily his best season,
23:12in a sense of what he meant to the defensive side of the floor as a playmaker, you know, setting guys up.
23:17So I think we'll see more of the same.
23:19But on another level, like you said, I do think that he's going to have that chip on his shoulder for sure.
23:24And I would like to think that with everything that went down last year,
23:28that we're going to see him get to the free throw line a little more.
23:31And what I mean by that is I feel like this whole like back and forth with the officials,
23:34hopefully that dies down significantly this year because, you know, that tends to happen for champions.
23:40Right, Gerard, you know, guys who have been there before, you know, go back, they get the ring.
23:45You get that respect when you come back the following year.
23:47So I'm expecting that, you know, for Tatum.
23:49And I think with that, you know, if you couple that with his mindset and going out there and just wanting to just destroy you,
23:55like I wouldn't be surprised if we see something similar to what we saw with the 08-09 team, you know,
24:01like maybe not, you know, 23-3 or whatever the heck it was before a month or so before KG went down.
24:08But just a dominant stance, you know, and whether that goes into a championship, you know, hangover or not.
24:17I don't think that's going to linger for long with these guys, you know, because like you said, I mean, they're not approaching 30.
24:23You know, they're not you know, these guys are still getting better.
24:26Tatum still getting better. Jalen Brown still getting better.
24:29You could say the same thing about Derek White.
24:31So I'm expecting Tatum to just take things to another level for sure.
24:36And maybe this is the year he's he's, you know, one of the last two, three finalists for MVP.
24:41Maybe. I don't know. I mean, man, I went out on a limb two years ago.
24:45I wish I didn't say that. But, you know, we'll see.
24:49We'll see what happens this year because I'm not saying I didn't want to say it last year.
24:52And I don't want to say it this year, even though I'm somewhat saying it.
24:55But I'm not going to be the guy who's like, oh, Tatum for MVP for sure.
24:58If he finishes top three, that wouldn't surprise me in the slightest.
25:01I'll put it that way. It's summertime and there's no better way to spend it than at the ballpark.
25:06Popcorn, soda, hot dogs. I'm starting to get hungry just thinking about it.
25:11Those games create lasting memories and getting to those games is a lot easier with game time,
25:15which is an authorized ticket marketplace of Major League Baseball, which makes getting tickets faster and easier.
25:22Prices on the game time map actually go down the closer it gets to the first pitch with killer last minute deals.

25:33Game time takes the guesswork out of buying MLB tickets.
25:38Now, being a Yankees fan that I am living here in Boston, I know it gets complicated and very uncomfortable from time to time.
25:44But keeping an eye on the AL East is a really big deal for me, as you can imagine.
25:49I know I can go to the game time map and jump on the best deals quickly.
25:52The color coding options at the ballpark make it super easy to see what are the best deals for the best seats from all the seats in that particular venue.
26:00And you can customize your search options based on your favorite team or your favorite team to watch.
26:05The game time app makes it super easy to get into the game and you can't beat game time's lowest price guaranteed.

26:37Last minute tickets, lowest prices guaranteed.
26:42Well, I'll take that mantle from you, Josue.
26:45I'll say it because I've been saying Tatum is going to be in the MVP conversation from beginning to end.
26:50He is going to be a top three finish because he's got the talent.
26:53That's to me, the talent is like the last thing I worry about with Tatum.
26:57It's consistency and playing with, I think, a little bit more aggression and just playing a little more edge.
27:03And I think he's got all the motivation in the world for a player of his stature, of his talent and his skill set to be even more motivated than just the motivation to be a great player.
27:13So I absolutely expect to me I'm at the point now if Tatum is not a top three finisher for MVP, I feel disappointed that he hasn't brought it this year because he has that in him.
27:26And with the way things went down with Team USA and now you're the highest paid player in the game, bro, you have every reason in the world to make sure that your pronouns are he and him.
27:36That is you. That's you, man. You are that guy. You are that guy.
27:41Yeah, but Sherrod, does he get hated on from a national scope?
27:44I think he gets hated on sometimes. I don't know. He doesn't get the benefit of the doubt.
27:48I think he does. But I think part of it has to do with the fact that you touched on this earlier, just the engagement he has with officials.
27:54Because if you think about it, you know, between him and Luka, I'm not sure that that's why the finals was to me.
28:01One of the big takeaways I got from the finals was that Tatum and Luka, for the first time, I think in any extended period of time, were not bitching and moaning to the refs every other time someone's breathe on them.
28:11They are two of the worst players in that regard. Incredibly talented and easily first.
28:17But Luka's number one by a mile, I think. Yeah, they're one and two. They're one and two.
28:22Yeah. Yeah. So to see them not do that as much, I thought was really good.
28:26But the thing about Tatum and we don't we you know, we don't talk about this with Jalen Brown because literally every year Jalen Brown comes back and has a clear part of his game that's better than it was a year before.
28:38He's one of the few players I can say I would consider in that top 15 conversation who has done that every year of his career.
28:46Pretty much. With Tatum, you know, when you look at his now he's into the offseason, finally, obviously getting rest is going to be a big thing.
28:54And that that's certainly something that he's had plenty with Team USA. He's going to get some now before he gets things going again.
29:00But what part of his game do you think he needs to really try to strengthen up or bolster between now and the start of training camp?
29:09Man, I mean, the free throw thing is is like I think he's being he's he's aggressive enough.
29:16You know, he doesn't always get the call, but I think that's a that's a part of it for sure.
29:20But overall, if I had to pick another thing about his game.
29:25Honestly, that three point shot, man, is he is he losing it?
29:31Like, I don't I don't know if it's in his head.
29:33I don't know if it's one of those situations where it's like, man, if I keep missing, he's going to bench me.
29:37So he was in his head with Team USA. But you kind of saw it start in the finals.
29:42Right. I mean, he's going to he'll hit a few threes or so.
29:45But I just feel like his his efficiency has gone down, you know, in a big way.
29:49So maybe that's maybe that's it, you know, that and get into the free throw line.
29:52I think like those two things is what's really preventing him from being an everyday 30 point score.
29:59Not that this team needs him to be. But I think that's the type of season Tatum could have where it comes naturally.
30:07You know, 28, 29 points a game just from 12, 13 free throws a night, you know, two, three, three pointers, you know, off of six, seven attempts or something like that.
30:19You know, something around there, I think would do it for sure.
30:23Yeah. Yeah. I think when you look back at their championship season, so many things fell into place just perfectly for them.
30:31You know, Sam Houser off the bench was hitting shots when you needed him to hit some shots early on to give you a cushion.
30:36Peyton Pritchard seemed to get better and better as the season progressed.
30:40And he really came up big at some some pretty critical moments for you late in the season to help you guys continue to be that team.
30:47Jalen Brown was was was great. Al Horford in his load management role did a phenomenal job, I thought.
30:54Porzingis, you know, really, you know, they did a lot of load management, Porzingis.
30:58But for the most part, he was healthy enough to give you a sizable amount of contributions and give you that stretch big that you absolutely needed to really kind of balance out those minutes when Al Horford wasn't on the floor.
31:11And so you look at you look at all the guys that did some pretty amazing things.
31:15Things just went perfectly. And I don't know if that's going to happen this year.
31:20I don't think things are going to be as easy for them, in part because guys just have off years.
31:26It's a part of the NBA when you play in the league for five, six, seven, eight years.
31:29There's going to be a season that's going to look like an outlier where you just weren't very good.
31:33And it could just be it could be you dealing with injuries. It could be dealing with the increased attention that you're going to get.
31:39Now, I'm curious to see what's that was going to have with Derek White, because that's a guy that you better believe when he's on the floor.
31:45Teams aren't going to be as comfortable just kind of letting him do what he do.
31:50And if they try to take away some of the things from him, who is that going to benefit?
31:54So I think the Celtics, to repeat as champions, they are going to need a much more efficient Jason Tatum.
32:01And to your point, you know, when we talked earlier this week to Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe,
32:06that was a point that he made that Tatum really needs to get back in the lab and just really work to fine tune that three point shot.
32:13Because if you look at just the efficiency of that, it is taking a significant downturn.
32:18It wasn't just with Team USA where I don't think he made a single three, but also in the playoffs.
32:24He really was. And being kind to say that he was up and down, he was probably more down than up.
32:30And you look at his numbers in a regular season.
32:32They weren't exactly the kind of numbers that you would expect from a excellent three point shooter on a team where you damn near everyone on the floor could knock down threes.
32:42So he's got to get better at that and be more consistent and efficient.
32:47And I think he will, because, again, I think it's the only thing that you can really look at as his game right now.
32:53And you can say this is something that might be a problem if we don't fix that and correct that.
32:59Right. Right. Because sometimes I feel like you get you get flashbacks of like the old Tatum where the volume is just like through the roof and he's just trying to shoot himself into the game.
33:08And like, that's the kind of stuff that, you know, he's he's he's worked so hard to get out of his system.
33:13So maybe, you know, maybe it's a volume thing, you know, maybe he's settling too often.
33:18But, yeah, that that that percentage really surprised me that he wasn't able to to bring that up.
33:23But again, like you said, you know, when you got your entire starting five, I can shoot three guys.
33:27How's it coming on the bench? I can knock down a bunch. That helps.
33:30But it would just to see him, you know, find that efficiency this year, I think would be would be great, you know, especially if we're talking about entering that conversation and being one of the top three finalists for MVP.
33:41Yeah, absolutely. I've got to work on that.
33:43Absolutely. Well, like Joe Sway, I'm going to try to get a little bit of enjoyment of the last few days of the summer.
33:49I will not be doing outdoor. Yeah, man.
33:51Get out that Joe Sway Pavone.
33:53I'm not doing that, but I'm going to try to get a little bit of skunch night.
33:57Folks, again, people out there who haven't seen Tropic Thunder, man.
34:00Watch that movie. That's a great movie.
34:02Oh, man. And now he's got a movie. Now he's got movie reviews and options for you.
34:07The man can do anything and everything.
34:09Joe Sway Pavone. Hey, Joe Sway, thanks for checking in here.
34:13And this is the Big Three NBA podcast.
34:16Again, thanks for checking us out and we will see you when we see you.
