00:01:47for you every single day, Monday through Friday.
00:01:50But this is the weekly free episode, so we'll take you through what was a great first week
00:01:56for the Celtics, trying to defend Banner 18, get Banner 19, three games this week.
00:02:04Trying to attack.
00:02:05Trying to attack.
00:02:06Yeah, I struggled with trying to address that, I think, ever since Joe said we're not defending
00:02:12it.
00:02:13But yeah, they're attacking Banner 19, and they came out with a good offensive, wins
00:02:18over the Knicks, blowout win against the Knicks, blowout win against the Wizards, and a close
00:02:23game against the Pistons that I think was a little bit unexpected.
00:02:28Jay, we'll start with you.
00:02:30Are the Celtics going to go 82-0?
00:02:33I mean, I think this is the question, or are we going to see more struggles like we saw
00:02:37Saturday night in Detroit?
00:02:40They will not go 82-0.
00:02:43They will be extremely good at basketball.
00:02:49Like this team is advanced compared to where it was a year ago.
00:02:57Even though they played for two quarters, they played just shitty basketball against
00:03:04Detroit.
00:03:05They're down six in the final quarter, have gone four minutes of scoreless basketball,
00:03:13and just have two beautiful possessions.
00:03:16First, Al Horford dives into the paint.
00:03:20Jason Tatum hits him.
00:03:21Horford pings it over to the wing, pings it over the corner, Drew Holiday splashes
00:03:26a three.
00:03:27Then the next play, Jalen Brown is flying in transition, and Jalen in transition, as
00:03:34you guys probably recall, it used to be blinders on, going straight to the hoop.
00:03:40If he makes it cool, if he doesn't destructive, instead, he goes to the hoop, jumps up, passes
00:03:50it out to Al Horford.
00:03:53It goes swing, swing again, Drew Holiday, three-pointer, two in a row, and it was just
00:03:59like after two quarters of just kind of messing around, losing their poise, I thought they
00:04:04kind of got rattled by some of Detroit's physicality.
00:04:10It was the first time this season they've dealt with such physical switching, but when
00:04:17they needed to have it, they had two amazing possessions, and then Jason Tatum just closed
00:04:23it out with a bunch of points down the stretch, 10 points, I believe, over the final 2-13,
00:04:32and that was it.
00:04:35That drive-in kick was like the lean forward in your seat moment.
00:04:38It was like you're watching, like lean back, and you're like, damn, this sucks, and then
00:04:41it was like that drive-in kick, and I was like, oh, we're back.
00:04:45That really was true because, I mean, they were up 23, and just ball movement went away,
00:04:53three-pointers went away, all semblance of good basketball went away, Jaden Ivey was
00:04:58getting to the hoop, Cade Cunningham was doing what he wanted.
00:05:01It was just kind of gross basketball for a while, but to be able to rescue themselves
00:05:06out of that, you know, that's what championship teams do, and like they have a level of execution
00:05:15that they can reach that nobody else can touch, and their defense reached another level over
00:05:20the final like six, seven minutes of that game, and Detroit just no longer had much
00:05:27prayer scoring, and then they had a few good possessions of offense, and that was it.
00:05:33B-Rob, like what was the reason for their struggles there in the middle of the game
00:05:38against the Pistons because it, as Jay mentioned, they had like four minutes of not scoring
00:05:43the basketball in the fourth quarter.
00:05:45They went through some of that in the third quarter.
00:05:48It felt like they kind of lost their way on offense, and then it maybe led their, led
00:05:53into their defensive effort, but what you see there, just kind of like, it's not every
00:05:58day you give up a 20-point lead to the Pistons, but you know, the Celtics managed to do it.
00:06:03I think they were facing a team that was actually trying hard on defense, which was for the
00:06:08first time all season, nothing against the Knicks, but the Knicks just didn't, you know,
00:06:13they just weren't together around opening night, and the Wizards are the Wizards.
00:06:16The Pistons are, I don't know, they're gonna be a little feisty 31 team maybe.
00:06:21They're gonna make you earn your wins, and they did that at the Celtics.
00:06:25The Celtics, I think, got back, I think Jalen Brown kind of turned back the clock a couple
00:06:29years in a bad way for a lot of that game in terms of his shot attempts from, especially
00:06:36from two-point range, just taking low-quality looks, and yeah, they just got into some bad
00:06:40habits there, but down six.
00:06:43I think you just saw what the confidence you built during last year's championship run
00:06:48and crunch time just kind of turning over into a random game on a Saturday night in
00:06:54November where, or in October, where they can just say, hey, yeah, we're gonna turn
00:06:56on the last five minutes here, and just perfect execution down across the starting five where
00:07:01you can go through everyone and everyone contributed something in that last few minutes there.
00:07:06There is just this like air of confidence that comes with this Celtics team.
00:07:09I was just watching the final episode of starting five on Netflix, and I was just remembering
00:07:14they fell down by 20 in game three against the Pacers, and I remember watching that game
00:07:19and just being like, they're gonna be in it.
00:07:21Now, completely different situation here.
00:07:23They're the ones blowing the 20-point lead, and maybe I thought something that contributed
00:07:28to it.
00:07:29A little shorter rotation, not as much zero-nini here against the Pistons.
00:07:34Sam Hauser was back in Boston with a bit of a back injury.
00:07:37He's now listed as questionable for Monday night's game against the Bucs, so it's clearly
00:07:42not something serious, but I still think the moments of offense, of struggles, it feels
00:07:50like it's coming to when either they're going to a two-big lineup, which I'm still quite
00:07:56skeptical of, but even it's moments when Luke Cornett or Xavier Tillman are not on the court
00:08:01and they can't play five out.
00:08:03It just feels like teams can kind of shrink the floor on them a little bit, and so I mean
00:08:10definitely nitpicking a little bit of their two-quarters of bad basketball here.
00:08:16I think we saw their, not their vulnerability, but against switching last year, how they
00:08:24reacted to it was just throw it down to Chris Topps in the post.
00:08:29Just get the switch, feed him on the block or on the elbow, and he's going to score 1.4
00:08:37points per possession, and he's just going to dice up whatever they do, and so now you
00:08:43don't have that anymore, and so I do think like the Pistons, they switched a lot.
00:08:49They had Isaiah Stort, Jalen Durin, like those guys, like super physical, big, young bigs,
00:08:59and-
00:09:00Big, young bigs.
00:09:01Nice.
00:09:02Big, young bigs.
00:09:03Strong, young bigs.
00:09:04B-Y-G.
00:09:05Strapping young bigs, and they were just like very aggressive.
00:09:12They were up picking up the ball handlers outside the arc.
00:09:18Ball pressure was on point.
00:09:20The Pistons played a legitimate defensive game and were very physical, and I think after
00:09:27two games of just kind of getting whatever they wanted against the Knicks and the Wizards,
00:09:35the Knicks because they could go at Carl Towns and the Wizards because they're the Wizards,
00:09:40the Celtics just kind of had to figure out, you know, how to play good offense against
00:09:47a little more intensity level from the defense.
00:09:51Yeah, the vulnerability that double bigs, I started actually showing that game for the
00:09:57first time.
00:09:58I was like, especially the Tillman-Cornet combination or either that.
00:10:01So like, you wonder now, I think clearly it's Joe's default option.
00:10:05It should be, but like, is Jordan Walsh going to get a crack in one of these games coming
00:10:11up if those guys, if the offense is still strong?
00:10:14Not just that he's the answer on.
00:10:15It's not going to be long, right?
00:10:18He will get a chance.
00:10:19I'd say he's, I think you earn it at this point where he like, if a game like that,
00:10:24where like, I might want to give, just see what it looks like at least, right?
00:10:28It's also like these two games without Hauser, it feels like Hauser would be getting a lot
00:10:32of the minutes and the spacing and the three point shooting is going to be there with the
00:10:36bench lineups.
00:10:37But it just felt like Durin, whenever Horford was not on the court, could just kind of park
00:10:43himself in the lane and not really have to worry about guys.
00:10:46But as soon as you have Horford on the court, Horford's out there sitting in screens, Durin's
00:10:49just a step towards the three and just the, everything kind of opens up for the Celtics
00:10:55a little bit more there.
00:10:56I will say, even with Luke Cornette on the court, and it feels like it was a strength
00:10:59of the Celtics, at least in these first three games of the season, the best short roll passing
00:11:04team in the league.
00:11:06They feel like, and Cornette is the one who stands out just because I guess I expected
00:11:09from him the least, but just anytime there's two to the ball and you have that big roll
00:11:15into the rim, it feels like they're making the right pass every single time and then
00:11:19getting that swing movement.
00:11:21And you mentioned it, Jay, with that, the first drew three, like that's how it started.
00:11:26It was Horford getting the ball in the paint and then passing around.
00:11:29Classic Drew holiday game where just a bunch of, for lack of a better word, goofball plays
00:11:34before that had not hit a bucket.
00:11:36But then it's like, you're very confident as a Celtics fan when you see the ball swing
00:11:40to Drew and he has an open three and he just knocks down two in a row.
00:11:43But also made it an incredible defensive play.
00:11:46All in that stretch.
00:11:47That's classic holiday.
00:11:48He had like four turnovers before.
00:11:50Most of the time.
00:11:51I think it was Ivy coming, coming down, right?
00:11:54It was Ivy handling the ball.
00:11:57And most of the time a guy that athletic is coming in, like you kind of give him space.
00:12:02Drew meets you like he goes out and he creates like sort of like conflict.
00:12:10Like he goes out and, and he, he's the aggressor and he doesn't defend.
00:12:14He attacks.
00:12:15Yeah.
00:12:16And it, it, it really is wildly impressive how he lives up to the moment in clutch situations
00:12:23against really good offensive players.
00:12:26Or I guess Ivy isn't a really good offensive player, but he's super athletic and he was
00:12:32having a good game and he can go by you and he can make things happen.
00:12:36But Drew is just able to like, like just put guys on their heels and make them do
00:12:43something that they don't want to do and, and kind of take control of that moment.
00:12:48And I, like every time he does it, and obviously the, the best example was probably the Pacer
00:12:54series against Nem hard when he like cut them off and, and, and poke the ball away and ended
00:13:03the series.
00:13:06He does it regularly in key moments where he just like totally screws up what you're
00:13:11going to do and doesn't allow you to, to have control of the situation.
00:13:17And not many guys can do that.
00:13:19Not many guys can just like, like yank that control away from the ball handler.
00:13:25Also just flawless execution by him of drew fouling up three with where at 17 seconds
00:13:31was where you let kid get over the half court, the pistol, are they going to file?
00:13:34I'm like, I'm not going to foul.
00:13:35And then thousand, the ref doesn't call it.
00:13:37He stares down the ref and then the ref called it.
00:13:40Like it was class drew high, like, like really like you're going to not call it.
00:13:43Like I'm drew holiday.
00:13:44You're not going to, I'm trying to foul him.
00:13:45You're not going to call that foul.
00:13:46But yeah, just like between the fence plan, as James mentioned, and just execution of
00:13:51stuff like that in crunch time, it's like drew holiday.
00:13:54You can't put a price tag on what drew holidays brought to this team, which has been a title
00:13:58and probably more to come.
00:14:01Jay mentioned this a little bit at the start, but just Tatum's clutch play down the stretch.
00:14:07We just got to bring up these great three games from Jason Tatum.
00:14:12Just going on an absolute tear.
00:14:14I don't know if he's going to shoot close to 50% of four from three for the entire year,
00:14:20but he's been, I don't know if this is just like recency bias, but it feels like this
00:14:26is some of the best basketball we've ever seen Jason Tatum play.
00:14:29Does it help that he's making all his three pointers?
00:14:31Yes.
00:14:32But it feels like he's just has not taken a step back at all from where he was last
00:14:37year and just coming in these first three games, averaging well over 30 points a game,
00:14:4250% from three seemingly doing everything.
00:14:45He's just been phenomenal so far.
00:14:50And just the way he's hunting is threes feels a little different than most of last year.
00:14:57Obviously, there was a lot of talk about the jump shot form and how he shot in the Olympics
00:15:03and the playoffs and everything like that.
00:15:08But you can see it.
00:15:09He gets a switch and he doesn't even have to try to go buy a guy.
00:15:15He's just creating just a little bit of space and that's enough.
00:15:18Alex Starr and Jalen Duran and whatever future big men that get switched on to him.
00:15:23Just kind of splashing threes.
00:15:25And I don't know if that's the most sustainable offense.
00:15:29I don't know if that's the approach he should always take.
00:15:32But if it is like if he's back to 2020, 2021 Tatum step back threes or sidestep threes,
00:15:42that's such a weapon and it's such a such a unique thing for a high powered offense
00:15:51to have, especially at the end of the shot clock.
00:15:54You can just create, whether it's a smaller guy on him, he can shoot over a bigger guy.
00:16:00He can use his quickness to create separation.
00:16:04Right now, he's just really humming.
00:16:08It was funny.
00:16:09I had, I won't say who it was, but one of the other writers texted texted me like those
00:16:19were two egregious shots from Tatum, huh?
00:16:29Did Jay freeze or does he not know timing on the joke?
00:16:34I honestly wasn't sure at first.
00:16:37That cut off perfectly where I was like, that is a bad punchline if you're delivering a
00:16:43joke right there.
00:16:44That was ridiculous.
00:16:45Yeah.
00:16:47Yeah, whatever.
00:16:48No, I don't know what to say.
00:16:52The other thing with Tatum, though, that sticks out now, like 18 assists, three turnovers
00:16:59in these first three, six to one assist.
00:17:01That's just that's really good basketball right there.
00:17:04And if you're scoring 30 points on top of that, then forget about it.
00:17:07But he's the scoring is there for them to for this to be your point packer, just to
00:17:13be like an all around best stretch basketball.
00:17:16That's pretty close to what I'd say as far as regular season basketball goes.
00:17:20Yeah.
00:17:21And I like.
00:17:23This is happening recently on this podcast where I feel like I, me, professional sports
00:17:28fan, professional Celtics fan is constantly being like the Debbie Downer and just be like,
00:17:32oh, well, we might not see this coming and it's unrealistic.
00:17:35We've seen Jason Tatum have very hot, you know, months of basketball before.
00:17:40And so I don't know if we can truly expect him to shoot 48 percent from three.
00:17:45I have a feeling at that volume, it might be unprecedented if someone were able to pull
00:17:49off that kind of thing.
00:17:50So obviously, you expect to see the three point percentage dropping.
00:17:54But it just feels like he's in complete command of the game and especially, I think, at the
00:18:00end of that Pistons game where they up to and needed a bucket, you just feel confident
00:18:08about his shots in the ISO, in the post, in a way where maybe you wouldn't have as much
00:18:13in the earlier career.
00:18:14And maybe that's just something that kind of comes with with championship pedigree.
00:18:18But he did that. He got fouled to, I think, put them up to and then made that shot that
00:18:22bounced off the rim.
00:18:24He's just playing, you know, fantastic basketball at this point.
00:18:29And there seems to be no semblance of a any sort of championship hangover or any sort
00:18:35of it's not like they played down to the Pistons.
00:18:38Like they came out and established that lead.
00:18:40It's and I don't think their struggles were necessary for a lack of effort.
00:18:45Maybe you can say they let down their guard.
00:18:48They let down their guard and their transition defense wasn't great.
00:18:51And it's like making some bad memories and getting caught on five on fours.
00:18:55But it's not like this team has come out with any sort of maybe they've done exactly what
00:19:02Joe Mazula wants them to do.
00:19:03And shout out to Joe Mazula, who's a we should have seen this coming every year of his
00:19:09career. He has started three and oh, so maybe he's just a very good late October coach.
00:19:15But the Celtics have really come out and and played solid basketball, which you cannot
00:19:20say for a number of other teams in this league who are supposedly contenders.
00:19:25The Bucs will be in Boston on Monday night, lost to the Nets tonight.
00:19:30I don't know if that's still true.
00:19:31The last time I checked, they lost.
00:19:33They lost. The Nuggets are struggling.
00:19:37There are a number of teams in this league that are not playing their best basketball.
00:19:41So I think it's just impressive for the Celtics to kind of come back and not really skip a
00:19:46beat when it comes to just toying with the teams of the Eastern Conference.

00:20:57Yeah, they're taking care of business.
00:20:58It's the I'm not going to throw a parade for them for being the wizards and the pistons.
00:21:03But at the same time, I played right.
00:21:06I mean, you can. But yeah, they've had only had to play really one meaningful fourth
00:21:11quarter the whole way. So that's exactly how you want to draw it up if you're Jomo Zulu.
00:21:14And that's and now we see some more interesting games here of the Bucks and the Pacers
00:21:19going up with the Pacers, too. Like all these teams, no one in the East outside of maybe
00:21:22what like the Cavs have come out of the gate looking really impressive.
00:21:28And that's not a huge surprise given the injuries, but still the Celtics are more than happy
00:21:32to pat their lead early here in the standings.
00:21:36Oh, Jay is going to come back at some point.
00:21:38He's just his his headphones lost battery and somehow that took down his entire computing
00:21:43system. And I don't even think you need headphones for streamer, but we'll figure it
00:21:49out. I just can't wait for the end of that story, though.
00:21:51Yeah, it was a real jumpshot.
00:21:54Hopefully just comes right back into it for just highlighting solid performances to start
00:21:59the season. I feel like Peyton Pritchard is absolutely due some credit just for his
00:22:04continued solid play, hit another five threes off the bench against the Pistons.
00:22:12And I think he did five threes against the Knicks, except couldn't get one of those last
00:22:17ones. I know he had five threes against the Wizards.
00:22:20He only had one against the against the Knicks.
00:22:22If he had one more, they would have set the record.
00:22:23But I think it's just such a luxury for him to be able to come in off the bench and give
00:22:27him that much shooting and that much playmaking and the defensive intensity.
00:22:33The crazy part of me was like, is Peyton Pritchard a six man of the year candidate?
00:22:36And that part's still crazy.
00:22:39I like or is it am I crazy?
00:22:43Yes, I mean, if you like, if he keeps this up, he's averaging over he averages over
00:22:5012 points, 13 points a game.
00:22:51He's going to be in that competition for the top five.
00:22:54And I just love the fact he's turned into straight up Hauser this season.
00:22:58Twenty nine field goal attempts, 26 from three right now.
00:23:01The man is foregoing just the the layups, I guess, in transition and just going straight
00:23:07to threes off offensive rebounds and in the flow of the offense.
00:23:11And again, it's it's working.
00:23:13It's pretty. And Jalen Brown called it out ahead of time with that for the Pistons game.
00:23:19Do you think that do you think the Pistons were or upset that they were just like they're
00:23:23just going to unleash Peyton Pritchard on us and then Peyton Pritchard actually did
00:23:28go and get unleashed on them?
00:23:31J.B. Pickerstaff showed them that at halftime, probably just that's when he got them
00:23:34back in the game, although they kind of started their comeback just before halftime.
00:23:38Right. Did you guys see Peyton Pritchard playing basketball with like a kid and is in
00:23:42the neighborhood of the park? I did see that.
00:23:43That's great. It's just like backing.
00:23:45It's like those videos you see where like from all the basketball camps, we're like the
00:23:49NBA stars are just swatting stuff away from little kids.
00:23:52Like I just love seeing him posting up some little kid in a park.
00:23:55That was it's probably his first chance to get a lot of post-up opportunities.
00:24:00I like to do it for the first time ever.
00:24:04I like to think he's seeking out small children like that just to post them up.
00:24:08So, Jay, we're you let us just you had the middle of a story.
00:24:14Someone texted you. Are those two bad shots from Jason Tatum?
00:24:18And then you froze. And so we're still waiting on the end of that story.
00:24:22Oh, someone texted me to say they were two egregious shots.
00:24:27And I was like, yeah, well, he got fouled on one of them and he made the other one.
00:24:32So like how egregious were they really?
00:24:35What are you talking about?
00:24:37I don't know. For eight minutes of buildup, that wasn't the best payoff.
00:24:41But as it's OK, I agree with you.
00:24:45They were not. They're not that egregious shots.
00:24:49He closed out the game. He closed out the win. Egregious.
00:24:53It sounds it sounds like a bontex text.
00:24:55You don't have to confirm or deny.
00:25:01So one thing I think we have to address is, you know, we are all you guys are in the NBA media.
00:25:06I guess I'm in the NBA media.
00:25:09Sean and I were credentialed by the NBA final to go to the NBA finals.
00:25:15Shout out to it right there.
00:25:20And there's been a kind of a discourse going around, at least in the first week of the season.
00:25:25And it's all focused around the question, is the NBA actually bad?
00:25:30And I was curious if you guys have any thoughts on this.
00:25:33It's I don't know.
00:25:35It seems a little bit ridiculous to me, but you got to talk about something.
00:25:38But why do you guys think this discourse is kind of popping up right now in the first week of this season?
00:25:46I have already ranted against this.
00:25:50It is it is the dumbest discourse you could possibly find.
00:25:57People are furious that the Celtics and probably other teams are shooting a lot of three pointers.
00:26:06They're not they're not operating like the James Harden Rockets, where they're going like one on one and then just launching from thirty five.
00:26:16Tatum will do that sometimes, but that's a very small percentage of their three point looks.
00:26:21For the most part, they are creating an advantage.
00:26:23They are spraying the ball around the perimeter.
00:26:26They are getting multiple passes.
00:26:29They're getting ball movement to create three pointers.
00:26:32They are playing beautiful basketball.
00:26:35They're like the 2014 Spurs, if the 2014 Spurs played in the modern era, where everyone wanted to shoot threes.
00:26:45They are smarter than you.
00:26:48They are more talented than you.
00:26:50They are bigger than you, and they work together more than you do, and they therefore create the best shots that they can.
00:27:01And so far, that has resulted in, I believe it's twenty three three point makes a game.
00:27:08Fifty three three point attempts a game.
00:27:12And they're all good, what you're describing sounds bad, you know, that doesn't nothing about this is bad.
00:27:17This is this is skill.
00:27:20It's teamwork.
00:27:21It's playing together like I don't understand where people decided that shooting a lot of threes was bad, because especially in the Celtics.
00:27:30Case, it's the result of beautiful basketball.
00:27:35It's a result of.
00:27:37Like just ball movement around the perimeter, it's a result of creating like two on ones and then capitalizing on it with the entire team working together to do that, it makes no sense to me that people are watching what they're doing.
00:27:55And saying this, this basketball rules need to change, like why, why are we trying to take away this evolution where they're playing some of the best basketball ever produced and now like people are saying that I guess they were saying about the Warriors to some extent, they were saying about Steph, Steph ruined the game.
00:28:22Like, if you think Steph ruined the game, then I guess anybody who plays beautiful basketball can ruin the game.
00:28:28And the thing that's crazy to me is that the early 2000s, there was like playoff games that were 70 to 60, like, and people were complaining about that, too.
00:28:38So, like, where is this happy medium of like, between ugly ass over physical basketball, where teams are just beating the shit out of each other and like the three point game that it's the NBA has evolved into, if I'm going to like extend the most grace possible to the people making these arguments, and it's tough to do that because they're making these arguments while the Celtics are tying the record for three point shots made in a game.
00:29:02It's that there are other teams trying to emulate the Celtics and in trying to kind of match them on the margins and take as many threes, and those other teams are not as talented, and those other teams have other guys who are really just launching threes who shouldn't be launching threes.
00:29:18And so, if I'm going to extend them the most benefit of the doubt, it's that there are these other teams that have guys launching threes that shouldn't be doing it in an attempt to catch the all talented and all powerful Celtics, and that is like the most like the most I can give them with this kind of absurd argument.
00:29:37Yeah, and I'll give them the least like, imagine if you didn't like basketball, but what you actually liked was like the drama and some guy like talking shit and then dunking on somebody, and then like laughing at the guy that got dunked on you hate the Boston Celtics brand of basketball because it's actually good basketball, but like, if you don't actually care about good basketball and you just want to see someone like get dunked on or see someone and we lost Jay again, Jay heard Jay heard you don't like basketball, Jay heard you don't like basketball, Jay heard you don't like basketball, Jay heard you don't like basketball, Jay heard you don't like basketball, Jay heard you don't like basketball, Jay heard you don't like basketball, Jay heard you don't like basketball, Jay heard you don't like basketball, Jay heard you don't like basketball, Jay heard you don't like basketball, Jay heard you don't like basketball, Jay heard you don't like basketball, Jay heard you don't like basketball, Jay heard

00:32:07Jeff.......mid-range jumper, like dumbass post-ups and people iso-ing and there was no ball movement
00:32:13and no, no flow, like is that what you want to go back to? Like, have fun. Really have
00:32:21fun. Idiot. I also think, the level of skill in today's game is just outrageous. Like even
00:32:29when you watch guys just like you watch I watch Jason Tatum in Detroit and hit
00:32:39like just his practice shots and they like they had a meal Jefferson
00:32:44contesting and he's like he's like six eight whatever was a great college
00:32:50defender and he's contesting and he's right there and Jason Tatum's mug and it
00:32:56doesn't impact them and it's like you're practicing with that you're
00:33:01you're training yourself basically to take shots with people right in your
00:33:06face with no space whatsoever and that's what everybody does now it's like the
00:33:13level of three-point shot making is just ridiculous it's not going to go away and
00:33:18I think it's actually breathtaking to see what these guys can do three-point
00:33:26wise and especially like there are some teams that probably take some really bad
00:33:30ones but the Celtics for the most part they take some off the bounce but for
00:33:36the most part like they create really great shots because they're better than
00:33:40you and smarter than you speaking of breathtaking and it's not a word I
00:33:46expected to hear from you Jay you guys I could say breathtaking I just didn't
00:33:52think it was in your vocab bet I mean I knew you were aware of the word I just
00:33:56didn't think it was a frequent flyer for you but I digress you before the season
00:34:02I asked you about two guys doing media together after the game but now it seems
00:34:08like it's kind of become a thing between Jason Tatum and Derek White Jay's shaking
00:34:13his head he still doesn't like it I thought it provided some fun moments of
00:34:17like seeing some actual personality was it really fun no it was a fun but it's
00:34:23it was press conference fun you you are you are putting putting the the press
00:34:29conferencers on a pedestal okay but press comp that press conference compared
00:34:34to every other press conference where they do it solo give me the little back
00:34:39and forth between Derek White and Jason Tatum other than compared to Jason Tatum
00:34:44just beginning cliches and I just want to run down exactly what you're talking
00:34:48about let's hear it so one the first thing you're talking about was when
00:34:56Tatum was asked why he wanted to do it with Derek White and he said because in
00:35:02Abu Dhabi he was asked about the the fake watch kids you thought you thought
00:35:12that was like timeless timeless content no was it the most interesting thing
00:35:19Jason Tatum said in that press conference yes and then and then why are
00:35:27you so and then then Tatum asked Derek White what did you say and he said I got
00:35:33that one and Tatum said what'd you really say and he said basically like
00:35:39you're so jaded for many years of I'm not jaded I'm trying to tell you exactly
00:35:46what you're hyping up right now I'm a mirror in front of your face showing you
00:35:53exactly what it is that you're hyping up it is fun to see the players interact
00:35:58with each other as human beings because the most access we get to the players as
00:36:03normal fans is just them giving very cliche answers to your guys I'm on
00:36:09through you guys but other reporters generally bad questions or it's a
00:36:13sideline interview of them coming off the court also speaking in cliches so
00:36:19any sort of moments between these players they're like oh they're human
00:36:23beings and have inside jokes together and like are doing that it was a lot of
00:36:27fun last year when they came up with like just random phrases to try and
00:36:30throw into game anything that shows them being somewhat human I think it makes
00:36:36the fan experience that more enjoyable and sorry it's gonna be harder for team
00:36:40transcribe to get down those like little things back and forth but it's it serves
00:36:45the ultimate audience Sean and I the fans not you two big-wig journalists I
00:36:51think you're drastically overestimating the impact of health and wealth
00:36:57especially inherited wealth you got that from Vickers right page 91 working in
00:37:04Essex County did be Rob you are eerily silent on the issue let's you have the
00:37:09voice of reason way in no this is it's bad for journalists this is this is all
00:37:15that is this is 100% more entertaining for fans not good for getting real
00:37:22answers so I see why Packard and Sean like this if this is the every road game
00:37:29is gonna be a dual press conference on the road for Jason Tatum that's not
00:37:32gonna do this for Jay and I and our stories but people don't care about that
00:37:37well you guys gotta step up you gotta go learn for new challenges figure out ways
00:37:41to play them off themselves you know like ask Jason Tatum a question about
00:37:44Derek way and see if he says something different it's you guys have been doing
00:37:48the same thing for 15 years I guess he used to be in a little scrum and now
00:37:53now you're in a press conference room and you got you guys got to get better
00:37:56the onus is on you when's the last time you've been challenged three big games
00:38:00into the season huh how you like me now every day the clip of Jason and Derek
00:38:11way on like the NBC Sports Twitter that clip has like 3.3 thousand more likes
00:38:19than almost any other like highlight clip they post from this last game is
00:38:24that supposed to be the people like the people human interaction I can see how
00:38:31it's shitty for you guys but I love it I still don't even get I also genuinely
00:38:38don't think it's it's that entertaining I think you're so used to being not
00:38:45entertained at all that the slightest yes this bit of entertainment has has
00:38:55convinced you that this is like this was like some some great comedy back and
00:39:01forth claiming that it was objectively not very funny it was just like oh these
00:39:07two guys are friends that's fun to see it's all I'm asking for that's all we're
00:39:13at maybe that's why people think the NBA sucks because of people like you who
00:39:16just want hard-nosed journalism instead of a too fun between buddies I have fun
00:39:22too basketball is back in the TD Garden folks and it is a perfect opportunity to
00:39:29get tickets to see the Celtics go for banner 19 I know I'm gonna miss being in

00:40:45fair we had fun in this program speaking of fun it's time for segments we got
00:40:49segments galore to finish out this free podcast let's start it off with moment
00:40:53the moment of the week graphics there from Sean you guys are listening the
00:41:03audio version you guys missed some hell there's just some great thoughts you
00:41:08know and the music in there I've never done moment week before so yeah I was
00:41:13gonna nominate three different moments and then let you guys decide what should
00:41:18be crowned as the first moment of the week the first one and it's gonna be one
00:41:22from each game first one is going to be Derek White's block on Kate Cunningham
00:41:29just a phenomenal block us like a possibly a game-saving block in the
00:41:33final moments that from the weak side I just thought he's it was a very cool
00:41:41moment in the game and he screaming after the block award the monster of
00:41:45Derek White than we've seen in a long time that's that's my vote
00:41:50check your mic by the way you sound like you're a little underwater so like
00:41:53that in the last 30 seconds but yeah as far as consequential place of the week
00:41:59that certainly has my vote I mean he I know he's got to be one of the best
00:42:04wheat side chalk walkers in the NBA period at this point with his amount of
00:42:09recovery on that play it was nuts all right nominee number two Payton Pritchard
00:42:15three-quarter shot heave that didn't count from how come you're in charge of
00:42:19all the nominations how I sent you guys the Google Doc with everything on the
00:42:25show and saying you guys can make any use and did you look at your Google Doc
00:42:30you you can either criticize the process of me preparing for the show or you can
00:42:36prepare in the show yourself you can't if you had texted me we're going to be
00:42:40nominating moments of the week I would have contributed but instead you texted
00:42:46me a Google link that of course I'm not gonna look at also this is an open
00:42:57forum you can nominate a moment of the week after I'm done with my nominations
00:43:01this is like anyone can nominate a moment of the week and so after the
00:43:04paint bridges shot the what I think I'm voting for for moment of the week is the
00:43:09Celtics disrespectfully gunning for the NBA record for three-pointers and then
00:43:15missing 13 in a row and then getting booed on ring night after blowing out
00:43:20the Knicks by 30 on their home court that was just a delightfully did was
00:43:27disrespectful moment and it was it was kind of funny they missed 13 in a row
00:43:30Jay it was amazing that they missed 13 in a row a lot of fun you have any other
00:43:37moments floors open for nominations I got no moment I would have though if you
00:43:49had texted me earlier I would I would have come prepared with so many moments
00:43:54well next week January raised when we do moment of the week maybe just TNT cutting
00:44:03away from the band right there oh my god Shaboosie performing Jay did you
00:44:09care about Shaboosie was that a moment of the week I don't know who Shaboosie
00:44:14is I will never know who Shaboosie is and I will be happy not to know who
00:44:18Shaboosie is so what's your vote Jay and Sean what who's winning the first ever
00:44:24still potable moment of the week well you know actually I have one more to add
00:44:27and it was in I believe it was the first game there was like an Al Horford
00:44:33block that was he sent it he sent it out of bounds baseline and it was like
00:44:38hurling towards a little kid and he managed to catch the ball hand to the
00:44:42kid take it back and that's my moment that's it that's that's electric that's
00:44:47classic great dad great dad move all right so we've all submitted our moments
00:44:53Jay it's time for you to weigh in does this does this help if you're the
00:44:56official arbiter of what we declare moment of the week will you stop
00:44:59complaining about the nomination process no I knew that wasn't gonna help well
00:45:06what's the moment please tell us Derek White's block has to be Derek White's
00:45:13block I think that was there it was the most consequential play and it was just
00:45:23he had no blocks over his first two games which is pretty unusual for him to
00:45:29go two games without a block and Cade got him earlier in the night with an
00:45:34insane lefty dunk and less than a minute left
00:45:40Cade's coming down the lane Derek White leaves his guy in the corner Tim Hardaway
00:45:46jr. times it absolutely perfectly and lets him know about it like look at that
00:45:53oh what are we looking at Jay are we looking at the potter's still potable
00:46:05potable still the game we have this option a very close-up of the block or
00:46:09this other picture I thought his block of Jade and Ivy was actually more
00:46:15impressive no I don't have that still pod but can you just add to the Google
00:46:19Doc you know we wouldn't prepare for this moment it wasn't as good a moment
00:46:23because it wasn't in such a critical juncture of the game but Jaden Ivy is
00:46:28like a freak freak and and Derek White just kind of stayed with him went up and
00:46:35just absolutely obliterated his attempt so I bar Jane I have a nice actually
00:46:42being good now as a I think I'm not buying that one yeah you're not okay I'm
00:46:48gonna have to see a lot more from Jade and Ivy then yeah I've been a Jaden I
00:46:52believe a few layups against the Celtics no he's good he's very fast and likes
00:46:58really bad oh yeah we've got a while in this podcast and we haven't even talked
00:47:05about I think that you know the true star of the Celtics the one with the
00:47:11most personality this is why we're so starred for like small little side
00:47:14conversations between the players because they don't have the most
00:47:17personality most the personality comes from the coach and before this before
00:47:23the season even really got started there was a hell of a week from just things
00:47:28that Joe Missoula said so debut in another new segment shit Joe said we
00:47:36maybe did a little more music on that one a little longer I'll go a little
00:47:39longer on that one a little longer I have four quotes from Joe Missoula here
00:47:43I don't know we don't need to rank them but I think they're all important you
00:47:47guys were asking him about pressure you know before the game before the season
00:47:52and he said we're all going to be dead soon so it doesn't really matter there's
00:47:56no pressure it's interesting we put in perspective like that nothing matters at
00:48:03all it's a very nihilist take from Joe Missoula which I appreciate it yeah I'm
00:48:08not buying that he feels that way you think he feels some pressure to win I
00:48:13think he feels plenty of pressure all right the next quote this one I think he
00:48:19actually is accurate in he's talking about there's a kind of a long lines of
00:48:24similar quote he goes the media doesn't have a weapon they're not gonna come
00:48:27after me they're just saying words he doesn't know me he doesn't know what I'm
00:48:32about he doesn't know a goddamn thing about me
00:48:36Coley and I were talking after the game and we said we needed to get one of you
00:48:39guys a sword in there to like if you presented a weapon before asking your
00:48:43question I think Missoula would respect you ten times more I did source a you
00:48:48know those like those plastic swords you get from the arcade when you wait enough
00:48:52I did one of my friends has one of those like I was over his house in the day and
00:48:56I saw one in his like guest room and I was like I might need to borrow that for
00:49:00when I head to the TD yard which one of you guys is gonna present a weapon to
00:49:04draw a weapon on Joe Missoula be Rob I feel like it could be you no one would
00:49:08see it coming with you I'll just sit in the front row at the
00:49:11that's a weapon enough you know like hailing the sword or like paintball gun
00:49:17yeah we have some options there the best part about those quotes and your next
00:49:23quote coming up Packard is they all came pretty much in the same it's only one
00:49:26response yeah this is like this could be season of the year stuff from Joe and
00:49:30this is just the first week which is so the greatest exchange that he had this
00:49:35week was last night and one of the one of the reporter local reporters asked
00:49:47him about coaching against a JV bigger staff team and he said yeah I'm not
00:49:54coaching against him like we're coaching against his team and so I thought he was
00:50:00just shutting down the entire thing and then the follow-up was like yeah but
00:50:05what might his teams look like Joe was like well we do an entire psychological
00:50:11study of all the coaches and we we have we have like all the we know like what
00:50:21types of decisions are gonna make like we gotta gotta gotta I was like that was
00:50:25that took a 180 degree turn where it was like yeah we're not we're not I'm
00:50:33not coaching as JV bigger staff and he's like but if I were coaching against JV
00:50:37bigger staff I would have an entire psychological database telling me
00:50:43exactly what his teams are gonna do in any given situation I know all his
00:50:47childhood traumas and his DSM 5 diagnoses like I fully and I'm not
00:50:52surprised at all that Joe Missoula the the sicko that he is has fully studied
00:50:56every single aspect of the game that he can that's a good one I that beats in 40
00:51:03years none of you guys are invited my funeral or what did the court taste like
00:51:07blood like that those all happened within 24 hour period I don't get the
00:51:13blood answer that just seems creepy and weird like why would you and then he
00:51:19said he wished it tastes like blood why like at what point is Joe built on the
00:51:25blood sweat and tears I get that but like at what point is Joe Missoula
00:51:29self-aware of like the ridiculous shit he's saying or do you guys think this is
00:51:34just like a thousand percent genuine like warrior talk coming from him he's
00:51:39that he's so locked in because it feels like he's teetered on the edge of like
00:51:42I might say some silly shit right now he leans into it and deep and everyone
00:51:49loves him for it so he's just gonna keep doing it but he also very much believes
00:51:56the vast majority of this stuff I don't think he's like saying anything he
00:51:59doesn't believe in he's not faking yeah he's certainly not it's easy for him I
00:52:04think he doesn't have a filter and he's fully leaned into just not having a
00:52:07filter and saying the first thing that comes to his brain I agree that with
00:52:11that I think he has a filter when it comes to protecting his players
00:52:17protecting his team from certain narratives that might get out there and
00:52:23what if it's about one of his goals though but yeah but if it's about him
00:52:29he's very much like willing to show you like yes I'm a hyper competitive freak
00:52:34and like I'm going to reveal this about you and I feel like he's gotten more
00:52:37and more comfortable just showing just like how locked in he is how much he
00:52:43does a deep dive into things like psychological you've got to figure out
00:52:47your mic bro just just get it get it to stay consistent for me one time would
00:52:52you it's this is a lot coming from the guy who froze during the middle of a
00:52:57story he was done and then we had I can't control the Wi-Fi I'm assuming you
00:53:01can control your mic setup I'm giving you too much credit I'm pretty sure I
00:53:06got a text from J King saying it was his the battery in his headphones so I
00:53:10think that's something you absolutely can't control brother well I didn't know
00:53:13I was gonna potentially need my headphones to potentially connect
00:53:17through the phone so I would argue that preparing for that would have been over
00:53:24the top however a true also it's also rich for you to come at me for
00:53:28preparation when I sent you the show notes and you refuse to open them just
00:53:34say it I I didn't realize you had sent me the show notes well you know it's the
00:53:43first week for everyone we're still working through this iterative process
00:53:46of how to you know get some new segments on there I think the first segments went
00:53:49well I'm looking forward to next week Celtics play the Bucks the Pacers and
00:53:56then I am forgetting who they play back-to-back in Charlotte a thrilling
00:54:01back-to-back in Charlotte on Friday and Saturday night should be a good week of
00:54:07Celtics basketball should be an even better week of still potable podcasting
00:54:11where did you send this these show notes in a text message if I'm looking at it
00:54:17Sean's looking at it right now be Rob's looking at it right now I'm looking at
00:54:21it right now what do you mean what do you already denied that you would ever
00:54:26open the Google Doc you you didn't even title the Google Doc it just said sign
00:54:31in I don't control how the note shows up in your thing yes you do because you
00:54:36could have just changed the name of it and that's all still possible Sunday
00:54:42show you're what we're doing too much Sean you're gonna finish the show you're
00:54:45the official ombudsman of this show what have we done wrong this week what do we
00:54:50need to correct what do we need to you know kick stay accountable on before we
00:54:55wrap this up not playing my transition yeah that's it that was my that's like
00:55:08my favorite music also Packard your mics again messed up I'm not buying we're
00:55:14buying Packard you Mike yeah first thing up for a story business right now yeah
00:55:18everybody subscribe to still a potable so we can afford to buy Packard a new
00:55:22mic I think there's quick things I think to start this is really about this
00:55:30specific episode just that there was maybe it was the last time I was on the
00:55:34show with with everyone I don't remember now but there was a big kerfuffle around
00:55:39preparation for the podcast and so Jay I think I think you're on the wrong side
00:55:45of this one but you know what do you what do you think just a quick quick
00:55:50answer I don't think I'm on the wrong side here shock if if if I had been
00:55:55alerted that preparation was ongoing I would have gone above and beyond to
00:56:02contribute to said preparation however he just sent a link that said sign in
00:56:09and and that's that's how I was expected to know about this so I feel
00:56:16like better communication on his end might have been a little little helpful
00:56:22in this situation I mean some of us have a curious brain I see B Rob clicked on
00:56:27the link Sean clicked on the link he added some stuff in there you know it's
00:56:31the thread about the podcast also just the text before said added stuff to the
00:56:35show the show outline I feel free to add it's it's great this is the still
00:56:41bottle difference we have never had a show out live before I didn't know what
00:56:46that text meant this is the level of preparation we've never had before
00:56:55Packard I gotta call you out on something you did wrong this week agree
00:56:59me too earlier this week I of course have nothing that be rubbed as wrong
00:57:04cuz be rubs never done anything wrong but Packard you there was I don't have
00:57:12the note of what it was because listen I'm putting these notes together as we're
00:57:15going but Packard there was a moment where you were talking to be Robin beer
00:57:19I've had to say oh yeah we talked about that on yesterday's show and you have on
00:57:23many occasions called out J for not listening to the episodes that he's not
00:57:26on you know what's your rebuttal for skipping episodes now what's what's
00:57:31going on there day job you know too busy saving public safety in the greater
00:57:37city of Philadelphia sometimes you commute to the job though Packard yeah I
00:57:41do okay but I'm listening to books books on tape you know to try to get smarter
00:57:47yeah no hand up I did not I had not listened to every still potable episode
00:57:54you know what you know I was just trying to keep the conversation fresh you know
00:57:58I like I wanted to have my fresh Lonnie Walker take I didn't want to have to be
00:58:03clouded by J&B Rob's previous Lonnie Walker take cuz then I'm just repeating
00:58:07what they said I'm keeping my information good to go for the people
00:58:12that's that's I guess fair I do listen to every episode and I also have a day
00:58:17job so but Packard has actually shared that take where he said he wants to not
00:58:24listen so that he has fresher take so I'll actually back him on this one I
00:58:29rarely do but I will okay I'm shocked to hear J supporting my name what is going
00:58:35on right now I was gonna I was gonna bring up one more complaint I had with
00:58:38J but I will withdraw it in a you know moment of solidarity for the podcast
00:58:45go ahead go ahead why do you hate Sam Hauser the two-point daddy you silence
00:58:49about his two two-point shots against the Knicks he's ever he has he has one
00:58:53shots per he has two in three games which leaves him which would leave him
00:58:59shy of the total he is currently not on pace to get the total that you suggested
00:59:06he would in the games he's playing oh no you can't bring this up as a win for you
00:59:12when really I'm winning right now why do you hate Sam Hauser's off the
00:59:17triple game it just feels like because you never developed one at your little
00:59:22podunk college that you're just jealous of a three-point shooter you know
00:59:26developing a little move off the triple I get buckets I was just I was more than
00:59:34a shooter I never got in the game so it didn't matter
00:59:38see Rob since we're airing grievances you have anything to say where's your
00:59:42grievance I thought we were just gonna I was gonna say this podcast was gonna
00:59:46come full circle with JJ adding jam on that I thought we're gonna that was
00:59:50gonna be upset of the week and then Packer just couldn't Packers could not
00:59:53help himself I've had this I was or take brewing
00:59:56since you've been serving Jay and our meanwhile I'm still in the lead right
01:00:01now what the pace he's pacing to get less than whatever you projected 65
01:00:10two-point makes he's pacing to get less than that all right well we'll keep the
01:00:15Sam Tracker two-point makes track going I say Sam Tracker I'm MCM hauser this
