00:00The Cedric Maxwell podcast is brought to you by Price Picks and the Game Time app.
00:16All right.
00:17Another episode of the Cedric Maxwell podcast.
00:19I'm Joseph Pobon.
00:20Cedric Maxwell is here of course and we've got a special guest, Asher Oblique, back on
00:26the podcast from the NBA Big 3.
00:29It's been a minute.
00:30It's been a minute.
00:31What's going on, fellas?
00:32It's been all spiffy.
00:33Did you dress up for us?
00:34Damn.
00:35I would lie to you and say, of course, but that would be a lie.
00:38So I ain't gonna lie to my brothers today.
00:40Today will be the one day I will not lie to you.
00:42This is Truth Telling Tuesday.
00:44So we're gonna keep it 100 today.
00:47Yes.
00:48That's what we do here, right, Max?
00:49Gotta keep it 100.
00:50Hold on to 100.
00:51Especially with these Celtics.
00:52Exactly.
00:53Exactly.
00:54Hold on to 100.
00:55All right.
00:56I thought you were gonna say something else, Max.
00:57I thought you wanted to get something off your chest.
00:58I don't know how I did that.
00:59That's all.
01:00Yeah, man.
01:01Look.
01:02What happened at TD Garden.
01:03We gotta get into it.
01:04Obviously, fourth quarter, late game execution, but also we gotta talk about the Celtics as
01:07a whole.
01:08I mean, how are we feeling about going into somewhat close to the adult start break here?
01:12How are we feeling about the Celtics team?
01:14And we gotta talk about what's going on down south in Miami, man.
01:17Man, Jimmy Butler, another suspension, another, uh, looks like a, looks like a, uh, like the
01:22heat done reduced the price tag for him now in the middle of all this crap.
01:28So we'll get into that as well.
01:29But first things first, man, Celtics, Rockets, Imei Udoka, back at TD Garden.
01:34He really wanted this one.
01:35I felt like it was written all over his face.
01:37He was, he saw that score that, or that deficit increasing, went to double figures, but then
01:42came Dylan Brooks playing the game of his life, 36 points, 10 three-pointers, tied a
01:47career high, but don't sleep on, hey man, Thompson, man, man.
01:52Taking it to the rack, taking it to the hoop against the Celtics.
01:55And of course he did the, the, the, the biggest shot of the night, man, left one second on
01:59the clock as a little defensive hiccup happened on the Celtics end, but don't not to discredit
02:05my guy because man, that was a hell of a hell of a play, uh, even before that as well.
02:09But yeah, let's get into it guys.
02:10Late game execution.
02:11Sharada, I'll let you start first.
02:12What happened throughout that fourth quarter and how did the Celtics let that one slip
02:15away?
02:16Well, I mean, when you, you gotta go back even before the end of the game and embrace
02:20the fact that in those late game situations, usually Derek White low key is a guy that's
02:27making sure everyone is what they need to be and doing what they need to do.
02:30Uh, and to the point that, that you were making earlier about just, you know, uh, Dylan Brooks
02:37hit shots, amen, doing his damn thing.
02:39At some point you needed someone to just bring a little bit of force, a little bit of physicality
02:44and remind them that, you know, you are the Houston Rockets and you may be young up and
02:48coming, but you ain't here yet.
02:50Uh, and we need to remind you of that.
02:51And I thought that's where a guy like Al Horford would have been beneficial because I do believe
02:55that Al at some point, he may not give you a bunch of points, but you know, all the easy
02:59drives and never get to the lake, Al got six files every night and Al knows how to use
03:03them.
03:04Al is an OG.
03:05And I think Al would have really embraced the moment that was, that they were in.
03:08And that is, this is a team that's coming for your spot.
03:11This is a team that believes that if they play hard enough, they're going to beat you.
03:17They did.
03:18And the Celtics, to me, this was a reminder of just how important having all the pieces
03:24in the kitchen are.
03:26This team, I'm going to tell you now, they're not going to win a championship if they don't
03:30have all the complimentary pieces ready and willing to go to war.
03:34Because what they did last year, winning a championship and not really getting a huge
03:38game or get a huge series for Zingas, that cannot be your idea of ideal blueprint to
03:43win another title.
03:45You're going to need everyone to step their game up and be available to step their game
03:49up if you're going to win a second title.
03:51And when they have those games where you're missing one or two key pieces, this is what
03:56happens.
03:57I mean, think about this from Luke Cornett's standpoint.
04:00At some point, he's probably thinking, why the hell am I on the floor when the game's
04:04on the line?
04:05This ain't what I do.
04:06This ain't who I am.
04:08This is-
04:09You know what?
04:10No, no, no, no, no.
04:11You know he was thinking that.
04:12That's the truth.
04:13You know he was thinking that.
04:14If you're a footballer, if you really want to play and you get an opportunity, then you're
04:18going to step up and you're going to play.
04:20Luke has been really good.
04:21He has been good.
04:23I think I look at that first half, Jason Tatum was no place in sight.
04:28Jason Tatum didn't score in the first half.
04:31Now he had a really good second half, but defensively, you look at what the thing you
04:36talked about is Derek White.
04:38Derek White would have been one of these guys against Brooks.
04:41Yeah.
04:42And probably-
04:43Yeah, he would have blown them down, but because they kept, he was pretty much wide open.
04:49Then he started hitting some tough shots, Hauser not being available.
04:53But this is what I talked to Al Horford about.
04:57Al told me, and we had breakfast, I said, he said, when it came to not playing on second
05:04mile back-to-back, he said, I was, whoa, wait a minute.
05:08No, no, no, no.
05:10I trained for this.
05:11I trained for this.
05:12And he said, but then I had to understand the importance of my legs in these other games
05:19or in late game situations.
05:23That's going to be a tell-all, really, when you talk about the Knicks.
05:26The Knicks are playing well, right behind the Sevens.
05:29But the minutes, some of these guys are logging right now, 38, 40, 43, 44 in the second half
05:38of the season, in the playoffs.
05:41Last year, they didn't have anything.
05:44So I don't, I don't look at the, I looked at that game yesterday, it was a really good
05:48game.
05:49And there was a coming out party for me watching Thompson.
05:52He was athletic, he's strong, he's physical.
05:57He did a lot of things, Brown and Tatum, Brown in the second half, Tatum in the second half
06:04were really good.
06:05But who was really good for most of that game, if he hadn't been foul difficulty, probably
06:09was Porzingis.
06:11Porzingis, when he picked up that fourth and then the fifth foul, he was relegated to a
06:15guy who could just stand under the basket with his arms up in the air.
06:20So Luke played well, the opportunities for them were there to win that basketball game.
06:26But to see the Selvins now, what they're doing at home and not playing well in their record
06:32at home, comparably to what they do on the road, it's a team that goes out on the road
06:39and maybe they don't need, I don't, they're looking at maybe they don't need the home
06:42court advantage because you think of what happened, they went out, they went out one
06:46time West, they came back three and one, they go out this time out West, they come back
06:51there and what now, likely when they lost to Lakers, I was, you know, I was full of
06:55shit then looking at that game, but you know, anything else, what they did, I think they
07:00shot themselves in the foot with the first game, they, the second game they played out
07:05there against Clippers, Clippers had nobody playing, nobody playing.
07:10And the Celtics essentially had a fur ball and almost cost that game, almost costed cost
07:17it up.
07:18And then they had to play Lakers the second out back to back with Tatum and Brown and
07:22those guys logged a big minutes.
07:24And I think that cost them.
07:26Yeah.
07:27Well, Max, how about the way that trip ended?
07:29I thought Chris Dasporzinga is reminding us, I mean, maybe we already knew, but just how
07:33dominant he can be one and two, how the Celtics look completely different when he's playing
07:37at that level.
07:38Now look at the box score here, we've got seven, eight attempts.
07:41I mean, granted he wasn't followed trouble, you know, in that fourth quarter, which to
07:44me, I understood why when they had the file to give, okay, you pull them, you get the
07:48file in, but they want to put them back in.
07:50So, you know, to Sharad's point, I was surprised to Cornette back out there, but the final
07:54play of regulation.
07:55But then again, just overall, I feel like you got to get away to make sure that Porzingis
08:00gets his touches, gets his attempts up because man, he's a mismatch.
08:04He always is.
08:05And even if he's not the one taking the shot, he creates a lot of the offense because of
08:08his ability to obviously one, stretch the floor and two, you know, his post moves.
08:13A lot of teams just can't match up with it.
08:15What we'll say is the continuity of the scene, continuity, and I will agree with a Sharad
08:21in the fact that continuity of this team is based on availability, the guys, the pieces
08:28they have, they're like having a glove and having one finger out or, you know, or, you
08:33know, running down the street, your laces are untied.
08:37They have to have, as you're saying, all hands on deck if they're thinking about winning
08:42a next championship.
08:44And I think they can.
08:46We've seen glimpses where this team has been so dominant, but then they're those, those
08:50nights that they seem like they're kind of disinterested.
08:55And that's disappointing when you talk about a championship team.
08:58Yeah.
08:59And that's the thing that I, that kind of worries, concerns, bothers me about them is
09:04that they, they really do seem to have those lulls where they just don't seem ready and
09:09activated to kick somebody ass.
09:11It's like they feel, they feel as though, you know what?
09:13Yeah, we may lose a couple of games, but we're going to be ready to come April and May.
09:17And it's, it's to me, it's that championship hangover that a lot of teams go through.
09:21And to be very frank and candid, it seems more prevalent, the further removed we get
09:26from the era when you had teams that had a certain dynasty-like quality about them.
09:32It's almost as if they win that championship and it's like, yeah, it's great that we got
09:35a championship.
09:36Let's try to get another one.
09:37Oh, well, you know, if we don't get it, then we just don't get it.
09:40And that's, that's some bullshit.
09:43When you are built the way this Celtics team is, you, your mindset should be that in the
09:47next five years, we need to get at least two more chips, at least two more chips.
09:52I love that.
09:53I was, I was on the elevator and I was about to go on the elevator and I had my phone in
09:57my hand and Brad Stevens walks by and he said, and he asked me, he said, are you looking
10:02for a defensive place that we had last night?
10:05Brad with the jokes.
10:08He said, you won't, you won't find them.
10:11I was like, damn, Brad, come on.
10:14Brad with the jokes.
10:17Now, if you're Brad, where are you?
10:21Yeah.
10:22Are you at the point where, you know, you think that you might need another veteran
10:26out there that can score buckets?
10:29Cause the one guy that I talked about that you had, I think is a bucket getter.
10:35I'm surprised at Southern to let him get away was, was Lonnie Walker.
10:40Lonnie Walker, man, that dude can play, get you a bucket.
10:43He can, he can defend at a high level.
10:46Is that the guy you go back to Europe and snatch him and bring him back into the fold?
10:52Is that the guy Jose Brissette who gave up a guarantee?
10:57Yeah.
10:58I know you're going, I knew what you're going to do.
11:00Two million, three million dollars.
11:05Listen, as much as Jose Brissette means to me and the alumni association,
11:11my task is getting Lonnie Walker.
11:14I'm getting Lonnie Walker if I want to get a chip because here's the,
11:17this is the thing about Lonnie Walker that I don't think people really understand.
11:20If Lonnie Walker were on this team right now, Sam Houser could take all the time
11:25he need to get that back.
11:27Sam, you can relax, get your back right.
11:30We're going to let Lonnie Walker go to work for about a good week and a half.
11:34When I think about the potential that Lonnie Walker could have had on this team
11:37if they kept him, it reminds me of the potential that this little fella
11:40by the name of Isaiah Thomas had when Marcus Smart got hurt
11:43and how when he got a chance to roll a little bit, they realized he's pretty good.
11:48And then when he kept rolling, he was really, really good.
11:52And when the injured player came back, we welcome you back,
11:57but your role is different.
11:59Changing times, changing roles.
12:03No, your job has been repurposed.
12:08Your job has been repurposed.
12:10You still have a purpose.
12:11It's just not the same as it used to be.
12:13And I do believe that Lonnie Walker would have given him that dynamic
12:16because now all of a sudden, starting five is what it is.
12:20And now you've got some firepower off that bench that isn't named Peyton Pritchard.
12:24And I think Peyton Pritchard, as the scouting report has evolved
12:28on how to deal with him, if you add another guy like Lonnie Walker
12:32to the mix who can score off the dribble, who can score from the perimeter,
12:35who can do a lot of different ways.
12:37He can get to the basket and finish and score.
12:40Oh, my.
12:41Your scouting report just got blown up because now you've got to go back
12:45to plan B with Pritchard, which means that he's going to be hitting the deep bombs.
12:49And you've got this other cat who can get you some buckets.
12:53Yeah.
12:54I remember that.
12:55I remember.
12:56I understand the money dynamic of it because the Celtics,
13:00I mean, give them credit.
13:02What they're doing or what they did with Lonnie Walker was not being cheap
13:05because when you look at the contracts that they have signed,
13:08they are anything but cheap.
13:11However, there's a cost to win the championship.
13:14And if that one piece can get you a little bit closer to getting a second chip,
13:20you've got to eat that.
13:22You've got to eat that cost, especially when you look at the landscape
13:25of the NBA now where so many teams are better than they were a year before
13:29and your competition has gotten better.
13:31And to Max's point earlier, as much as New York is feeling good about itself
13:37right now, you can see the wheels aren't falling off,
13:41but as I'm looking at that tread, it's getting a little thinner.
13:45And for those of us who have, you know,
13:48we have rocked and rolled with our ride till the wheels fall off,
13:51they don't just fall off.
13:53The tread blows up.
13:56The tires are going to blow up because you've been riding on it.
13:59You have been riding those wheels till you can't ride them no more.
14:03And that's what the Knicks do.
14:04I mean,
14:05they got more players in the top 10 minutes played than any other team in the
14:08NBA.
14:09That's what they do.
14:10I remember my tire doing exactly what you said now.
14:15Riding down the street.
14:18Exactly.
14:19Exactly.
14:20What the hell is that?
14:21And I get out and have my tire.
14:24The tire looked just like I had.
14:26I had to pull the thread off the rest of the tire to get home.
14:31So, so yeah, I think that they, they have to think about it.
14:35And as Brad committed to this team,
14:38to the personnel that are there,
14:41you want a championship with these guys,
14:44but here's a radar backstage.
14:47You never fall in love with the product.
14:51You always look to make it better.
14:55So I love Hauser.
14:58I love Pritchett.
14:59I love Al.
15:02That bench group.
15:03You have pores.
15:04When you look at Luke coming off.
15:06Right.
15:07Give me another.
15:09Guy who is a score like that.
15:11Who's a bucket getter.
15:12Monty Walker is a bucket getter.
15:15So to have him in the phone to me would be really cool.
15:18If you would think that if you were another card that could be played.
15:22And to me again, just.
15:25Just a, just a jumpstart for this team.
15:28Because right now I think that I think they're cruising.
15:30They're on cruise.
15:32They will play well against the Clippers.
15:36And then all of a sudden just said, eh, not interested in more.
15:39We'll make a couple of mistakes.
15:41Then they go to Dallas.
15:42And they pretty much smoke Dallas while they're there.
15:45So three games on the road trip.
15:47You cannot tell me this team is that good on the road.
15:51And then they lose their focus.
15:52Once they come back home to some teams that are inferior.
15:56And we'll see what happens tomorrow night.
15:58When they play against a team like Chicago, a team that they should be.
16:01Then you go from here.
16:02You got new Orleans.
16:03Then you got Philly.
16:05And then you got the big one.
16:07I don't see that swagger that they had before.
16:11I think right now they said.
16:12Yeah.
16:13It's always funny.
16:15When you bring that up,
16:16you're like, well,
16:18I mean,
16:19I was like,
16:20I was just like,
16:21I was like,
16:22I was like,
16:23I was like,

18:26run your game. All right. Before we talk about Jimmy, uh, you talked about it briefly, Max,
18:30about Jason Tatum going scoreless in the first, what do you, what do you think was the cause of
18:34that? I mean, obviously the, the Houston Rockets, I mean, one through five, these guys defend at a
18:37high level, but to see it play out the way it did, what would you, what do you think was
18:41it wasn't playing out to that high of a level where they were that good defensively.
18:47It just that he missed a bunch of shots. They normally wouldn't make
18:51any start to. And the thing about him is he starts to press and you can tell when he presses,
18:58then he gets a little frustrated. And then the biggest thing he has to get over
19:02when he gets fouled and he doesn't get a call, get your ass back. Right.
19:10You're doing that a lot back in the play, or he'll go just whack a guy in the head.
19:15And then you get a, uh, delay, you get a breakaway or whatever they call it there.
19:22So he has to understand who he is and him and Brown Brown. I think they follow just as well
19:30because of his persona, quiet assassin, but Tatum right now is especially your lead dog.
19:37And if he is not doing all those things, those little things to win you games,
19:42then they're going to lose some share of a share of those games.
19:46Yeah. Tatum to me looks like he's trying to battle some mental fatigue right now,
19:51because the thing that I've noticed through the years with players is that when they get
19:55to that point where they're just not as locked in mentally as they want to be,
19:58just because physically and mentally, there's like a beat down a little bit.
20:01It shouldn't take shortcuts, the path of least resistance. And for a guy that gets buckets,
20:05what's the path of least resistance? Shoot all them damn threes. Tatum could get downhill and
20:10finish at the rim with the best of them at his size. And when I see him opening games,
20:15take it three after three, after three, that tells me that, you know, like he ain't trying to,
20:19to, to be dominant in a sense that I'm going to take what the defense gives me.
20:25I'm going to take the path of least resistance. And if I hit one or two of these threes,
20:28then I'm good. And if I don't, I'm just going to keep shooting them. Uh, and again,
20:32Houston obviously trying to minimize his impact was part of the game plan, but Tatum
20:37aided that process by simply taking, you know, just taking a path of least resistance,
20:42which is jacket threes. Well, I'm I'm going to go old school here and go with you. Hey,
20:47Sherrod, where's Joe Sway at? Is he in the club? Cause they keep blinking the damn.
20:52Yeah. I don't know what that was. I don't know. I mean,
20:57he went from rock to wifi to Brock. He's like, there's always something going on.
21:03So you just wait, looking at the lights and like, like, you know, like you go to,
21:12are they going to bring you some lemon pepper wings in a minute?
21:15It's still blinking the lights on you go. Oh, she's this time to go, you know,
21:18or last waitress has popped up out of here.
21:23Lou way. It was a pop on a scene with some lemon pepper wings.
21:26Baby with the wings, the wigs at Joe Sway.
21:30Cause that's where you did tell me that you would, uh, you know, I'm going to let it out.
21:36You know, you did tell me you were a Hooters one day and, you know, out there.
21:41Oh, Bobby Manning can go at me and going,
21:49and you go on like this, who is it? Who, what's his name? Oh, Cedric Maxwell.
21:57How rank I ain't rank it. I didn't even know what the hell was going on. But,
22:01Oh, I think you were there. He's like, should I say it Joe Sway? I'm like, man, we live man.
22:09He's just left you out to dry.
22:11I thought you were mentioning the lemon pepper wings from another spot, but anyways, I digress.
22:16All right. Jimmy Butler talk now, because, uh, from the report, it seems like it wasn't a big
22:23fan, or at least this was the, the, the breaking point for Jimmy finding out he's going to come
22:26off the bench after serving a two game suspension because he didn't make it to the plane on time.
22:30After those guys got trapped down in a new Orleans, which was crazy, by the way,
22:33and you weren't looking like looking like Boston. I thought, I thought, okay, see,
22:36got it bad with the snow, but man, New Orleans got it worse. And, uh, he was late,
22:40got suspended for a second time at the server. What was it? A six game suspension. The first time,
22:45uh, this time the two game suspension, he comes back, doesn't even make it after shoot around
22:50because he said what coming off the bench, why I have never walked off suspended indefinitely.
22:56And now according to, uh, Sean's latest report is the asking price has gone down.
23:01The golden state Warriors have thrown their name in the ring in a sense of trying to, uh, to put
23:06together a deal. There's always been reports about the Phoenix sun trying to do the same thing, but
23:10looking for a third team to get involved. How do you see this thing playing out as we're about a
23:15week away or so from the, uh, NBA trade deadline? I wouldn't touch it. I wouldn't touch Jimmy Butler
23:23at all. And here's why, here's why, because if I'm going to acquire him, he has done nothing
23:31to remind me of playoff Jimmy. Uh, I don't know what I'm getting to me that the smart play for
23:36Jimmy Butler and all this is, you know, when you made it clear that you'd want to find somewhere
23:41that can bring you joy and all that other nonsense, that's fine. Well, here's the thing.
23:47If you, if you're going to ruin your mouth, you need to run up and down that court.
23:51You need to remind people why you are that dude that whenever the Celtics look at their playoff
23:57periods and they see that Miami might be one of the teams that they, damn, seriously, do we got
24:01to deal with that again? Jimmy Butler is that dude, but here's the thing. Jimmy Butler was that
24:08dude. I don't know if he's that dude anymore because I haven't seen him out there to validate
24:12or reinforce that. And if you're golden state, that is a major roll of the dice because you
24:18better believe that golden state is going to give up at least one player that they don't want to
24:23give up in that deal. And that's going to be the one player that's going to go to Miami. It's going
24:27to fit into that heat culture and play hard and play and do all the things and make them a scrappy
24:32ass team. He may not be the future face of their franchise because they got that with BAM and hero,
24:37but he could be that third piece that makes them competitive and give somebody in the first round
24:41some fits. Meanwhile, golden state, you might get playoff, Jimmy hell, you may not even get to the
24:47playoffs to get playoff, Jimmy. And then where you at, you just put invested $50 million in
24:52some changes to a cat. He's not going to go there unless you give him some type of
24:56weakness and you're going to give him an extension. And yeah, you got to understand something. This
25:01dude wants to get paid. Like he's 28 year old Jimmy Butler. That dude is gone. That dude ain't
25:09giving you that dude is in your text. When I do an excellent episode, you'd be hanging out
25:17with these soccer players too much. They try and get that kind of money. I am doing my Google search
25:22on Jimmy Butler. I can find 28 year old Jimmy. If I'm going to see the heat play that dude ain't
25:27there. That dude is a, a digital memory. He's not, he's not that good anymore. And again,
25:33can he help a team? Well, I think, I think, I think he's good enough. I think he's good enough.
25:40Yeah. He's not going to carry you the way you're saying that's, and that's just human nature from,
25:45from all of us. But hell, did we think LeBron James would still be playing like this now?
25:51But you know what? LeBron has never had a period where you questioned whether he could do, he's
25:56had games and he's had maybe a three, four, five day stretch, but there's never been a significant
26:01period of time where just like, I don't know LeBron guy anymore. Because the minute you even
26:05have that as a fleeting thought, that brother go out there and get you 28, 12, and seven.
26:09And he usually does it against somebody like Wimby or he does it with someone like Taylor.
26:13Somebody who, because of who he's doing it against, reminds you that damn, he still,
26:18he still got that in him. Well, let me ask you, let me ask you this Ken,
26:22and you know, I love looking at people's faces and you and Joe can his son play in the NBA?
26:27No, I'm going to say it. I'm going to say the, I'm going to say the loud part that Jalen Brown
26:32should have said out loud when he had the opportunity. No, no. And Max, and here's the,
26:37this is why you don't have to just read our lips. We'll just stay with the mics on.
26:40Hey, listen, this is Truth Teller Tuesday. So let's just keep it 100. All right.
26:45When you were playing, what we do is what we do when you are in the G league and you are a
26:50legitimate NBA prospect, there's a level of dominance that you should be playing at. When I,
26:56when I watch you play, I should be able to signal you out. Not because of necessarily
27:01all the points you score, but because of the way you are simply playing at a different speed,
27:06a different gear, a different, there's a different way that you move and groove
27:10that sets you apart. And even when you put up big numbers, like I look at a,
27:14what's his name? A young fellow from Alabama that, that the Celtics have.
27:19Big numbers all the time. But when you, yeah. But you look at the people that he's playing
27:23behind with the Celtics, you ain't beating Peyton Pritchard out. You damn sure he beating,
27:27you know, Drew Holiday out. You're not beating Derrick White out. So he's a guy that's done
27:31some things that, man, I sure would like to see what he can do at the next level,
27:34but that shot, that shot is not going to happen. Now flip over to Bronny. Who the hell do you got
27:39to beat out in LA? You ain't got, I mean, your daddy already got you on a squad. So you're good.
27:48You have, I mean, you have the clearest, easy path to play that any late second round pick
27:55has ever had. All you have to do is be an above, a slightly above average
28:01entry-level NBA player. And you can't do that because partly, partly because I just don't,
28:06I just think that his talent has not had enough time to develop. I think if he, if he, if he
28:13had another year or two of college, I think, I think he would be a solid NBA player, but he's
28:19just not ready. And the Lakers have not done him any favors by putting him on this platform in a
28:25major market like LA, where he, the pressure for him to, oh, wow. He's drinking right now.
28:35Facts. Listen, you talk that, I'm about to go over there and help you with that bottle.
28:41But he's just, listen, that's some good stuff. I think, I hope that Bronny gets an opportunity to
28:46develop because he's just not ready to play. Well, first of all, he's an odd size. He's an
28:51odd size. He's only, he's 6'1". And they, they, and they, they wanted him out on the floor.
28:59He's about 6'1". He doesn't have over the top athleticism. He doesn't have, does not know.
29:06I'm with you, but that was a, that, that post he had. I was, I had them jets. You can't even
29:11compare. And so if you were 6'1", you gotta be one, 6'1 and a half, you gotta be extraordinary
29:19shooter or have an amazing quickness or your basketball IQ has to be absolutely amazing.
29:28Or you know what? You got to be a legitimate dog among dogs like Avery Bradley was. Avery Bradley
29:34was not, did not have, other than he had really good wingspan. He did have that going for him.
29:39But more than that, Avery Bradley had that, I am a dog and I am going to dog your ass
29:44every single centimeter on this court. If I'm Bronnie James, I am working my ass off to be
29:50an elite defender because that's literally the only way. How can you be an elite defender if
29:56you're 6'1 and a half? Who you calling? You gotta be, you, a lot of it has to, Max, it has to be
30:01mindset. You, you have to mentally be that. I don't care, mindset or not, you're 6'1 and a
30:05half in the league that most of these guys at that position are 6'4, 6'5, 6'7.
30:12Even, even Drew.
30:13Yeah, even Drew.
30:15You're, to be elite in this league physically, you gotta be stronger than some of these guys
30:21or quicker or, or, or, you know, what?
30:24There has to be some, yeah, you're right, there has to be.
30:26There's none of that.
30:27But this is going to be his college, I think, you know, whether it's three years, four years. I
30:31mean, I don't think it's going to be one of this thing, you know, this is the year that we talk
30:33about him in the G-League and all of a sudden he makes that.
30:35You know what, though? Just wait, this, this is when the rubber's going to hit the road and you're
30:38going to have good tread on these tires when this happens. The Lakers are going to, at some point,
30:44whether it's through the draft, through free agency, add a guard. It's going to be a guy in
30:49that 6'3-ish to 6'5, 6'6-ish range and they're going to be a, a guy that will be a starter for
30:56them. Bronny is going to get a trade camp. That dude is going to kick his ass, kick his ass.
31:03And then it's like, okay, you can't beat this rookie out. Okay. You can't beat this other guy.
31:09You're basically the fifth guard on a team that's only going to play two or three.
31:15Why are we paying you again?
31:17Should I, should I open it now?
31:19Yeah, man. Might as well.
31:21I mean, but that's, to me, that's the dilemma that Bronny is a young man.
31:26You're going to pay him though. You're going to pay him because his father's there. I don't care
31:30what we can read off of these and say that. He's going to be on that team. You're not,
31:38you're going to waste a, you're going to waste a roster spot. The roster spot with
31:44Bronny right now. And clearly, I mean, and I know he's always told everybody to shut up
31:50and listen to them and do this. But it's, dude, we, we know what talent is. We've seen,
31:58we know that we know what, what, you know, what guys are going to do.
32:02And we can look at a guy and going, you know, that guy, he can really,
32:05the, the, the biggest compliment I think I ever had, and it was a non-verbal compliment to me,
32:13but I just kind of looked over to the side, but was the first time I ever played in training camp
32:19and Jojo White was on the sideline. I made a couple of moves and he taps up, you can see him
32:27hit somebody and going, I'm going to play, play. And that, and that was like, that was all the
32:34valid. I needed at that time, like, yeah, you know, because you had to do who saw who's been
32:40around the game, who knew the game and could say, yeah, man. And not, and not give it and not giving
32:48it easily because I had earned it with my ability. I'm looking at his teammates, guys he played with.
32:56What do you think they're thinking? Because they're playing against him every day.
33:00Maybe there's something in his game that we ain't seen yet.
33:03No, you're playing against him every day right now. No, uh-uh, no.
33:07And the flip side, the flip side to that, Max, is like, I think about a guy like Darko Milicic
33:13when he came to Detroit. And I remember talking with Rasheed Wallace and Antonio
33:17McDyess and Ben Wallace. And I was like, hey man, number two pick. And they was kind of like,
33:23yeah, I know, right? Number two pick. And when people, people were wondering like,
33:28why isn't he playing? And one of those players who I'm still cool with to this day was just like,
33:34if you saw what we did in practice, you would totally understand why he ain't playing.
33:39And back then, Larry Brown used to let us watch a decent amount of practice from time to time.
33:44And in the practices that I got a chance to watch, I knew exactly why he wasn't playing.
33:48He was getting his ass kicked by everyone on that squad. And I'm gonna throw Eldon Campbell
33:52in the mix too. Eldon, at the end of the Eldon, at the end of the Eldon Campbell era,
33:58he was also getting that ass with Darko. We're not talking about like young with the Los Angeles
34:04Lakers, Eldon Campbell, because that dude was pretty good. He was all right. Even the Hornets,
34:09Eldon. Even the Hornets, Eldon. The Eldon Campbell in Detroit, he was just basically
34:14finishing out the ride and he was still giving Darko the business in practice. And that to me
34:19was like, okay, now I understand why, even though this guy was a high pick, they are about winning
34:26and they don't give a damn where you were drafted. They trying to win games.
34:29And that to me is a concern with Bronny. I don't feel as though they are positioning him in any
34:37way that's going to work out for him because they're putting him in a lose-lose situation.
34:41If you struggle, then you're going to be seen a certain way. If they don't play you,
34:46you're going to be seen in a certain way. And both of those, neither one of those ways is a good one.
34:51So to me, he, Bronny can't win no matter what he does. The only way that he could come out of this
34:57all right, is if he outperforms everyone's expectations. And based on what I've seen,
35:03based on what I've told, based on the fact that not even our good friend, Danny Age, who you know,
35:08loves to throw ointment in the game when he can, did not want to draft him in the second round.
35:15Cause you know, Danny had to think if I draft him, the Lakers are going to want to have to
35:19deal with me. I'm going to give me an extra pick on it because y'all know that's how Danny roll,
35:23which I love. I respect the hell out of Danny for that. He is the ultimate deal maker. And even he
35:29was like, nah, we good. We good. And we ain't talking about Danny in Boston. We talking about
35:37Danny in Utah. We good. I'm just, I just, I feel bad for the kid because I just think that he's
35:47been put in a situation that he doesn't deserve to be in. Now, his younger brother, who's coming
35:52up the pipeline. Now, I'm going to tell you right now, when he enters the draft, there ain't going
35:57to be no, well, you know, maybe we can get him to play. Oh, hell look, we want him to play for us.
36:01We'll give a damn what daddy bro. We're going to get her to play with us and he will, I think he
36:06will be a future first round pick because he's got that kind of upside to him. Bronnie, not so much.
36:13Yeah. He set the hoop all classic on fire, man. Over in my, uh, my, my old stomping grounds,
36:17Springfield college. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. This episode of the century. Maxwell podcast is

37:02I never forget, man. It was, it was freezing cold. All right. Watching this Patriots,

38:12time today. What time is it? Game time. All right. Last thing I'm going to say about Jimmy
38:15though. If you're the Phoenix suns, you're going to ride this roster out or you're going to try
38:19to put your head in there and try to get someone like Jimmy. How do you get him? How do you get
38:26him? How do you get him? You, you, you dangle a bill right there. You can't do it. You can't do
38:32it because he's got the no trade clause, but he might take the no trade clause because he doesn't
38:38want to be, he probably sees himself out the door. But my thing is, even if he went to Miami,
38:47that the numbers kind of match up, he's not going to be in Miami. You got to have a third party,
38:54somebody who wants him. This is how this is going to work. It isn't going to be a straight
38:59up deal for bill. And, and, and, and, and in that way, it's, it's not going to happen.
39:05That won't happen. So you're going to have a third party. Who's going to be able to shift
39:09around that bill goes someplace else. And then something else happens and something else happens,
39:14but that's not what Miami wants. Miami is more prone that look, we'll take an inspired contract
39:20and we'll take some picks because we want to get better because we have BAM and we have some young
39:26kids and some young talent that we want to explore, but they're not, I just wonder if a team
39:34like Oklahoma city, who's got a, just a treasure trove of picks has a player that they kind of
39:40like between Miami and Phoenix that they would like to add. And they can make, they, and they
39:45can be that third team because they can put picks in the train. They can put, you know,
39:50lots of different options in there or something like that. Like a bench guy, you know? Yeah.
39:56Cause then I got to tell someone like Jimmy, but yeah, something like that.
39:59They don't want Jimmy, they don't want bill, but they might want, you know you know, a minor type
40:04player that could be part of their rotation and just make them deeper. I could see them doing
40:09something like that and I could see that helping get a deal done. But you know, Jimmy has really
40:15sunk Jimmy's value. And for someone who has made being a businessman while being a basketball
40:22player, kind of his thing, you remember in the bubble with the coffee stuff and all that,
40:25I thought that was some genius shit on Jimmy's part. He was promoting his shit while playing
40:30basketball, getting to the bubble finals, much respect to him for that. But what he's doing now
40:37is just dumb business. I mean, if you want to generate interest in you, Jimmy Butler, LLC,
40:44you need to actually give people a sense of what they're getting. And you bitching about coming off
40:49the bench, even though you've been suspended, you miss a team plays, you talk about, I need to be
40:54somewhere where I can find my joy, which by the way, when was the last time anyone ever said they
41:00could not find joy in Miami? When has someone, what has someone been like knocking on the door?
41:07I'll be in Miami and get me out of here.
41:11Add on that with $50 million, another $50 million on your contract. So if you can't be happy there,
41:23where are you going to be happy at the end of the day?
41:27The Celtics made him quit, man. I don't know. I don't want to just say it. I don't want to say
41:31it's all about the Celtics, but like it didn't help. I mean, the Celtics, it was like Celtics
41:35heat. And all of a sudden they just, there's this gap that the heat just never caught up to.
41:39And I feel like he's like, you know what? I see the way this thing's going to end. But at this
41:41point, he's like, I'm willing to go anywhere else. And obviously he wants to probably be another
41:45competitor. But at this point, he's making it clear, like, cause even when he did play,
41:49he's putting up what? Six, seven attempts. He was just interested. You know, he was trying to let
41:52these guys know, Hey, I'm not playing here. He said he wants to now one place. Interesting to me
41:59would be, would be Houston. Yeah. What email though to get a couple of players from them,
42:08some draft choices for him to play with email, with that attitude, that style,
42:13those younger players they have right now, they need, they need some pieces.
42:20So that's an interesting place. I don't see too many other places that Jimmy Butler is going to
42:26land that he's going to be happy and Golden State. Well, not what they have now Houston though.
42:34I got to think long and hard about that. Cause the team that Houston has now,
42:39they going to be kind of nice for a while, but nice and real nice. They're not, they're not,
42:47they're not there yet. Brooks is not, Brooks is not going to get 10, 10 trades every night. That's
42:54not, this is a bad shooting three-point team that went berserk against the Celtics. So, but then
43:01again, you add Jimmy and Jimmy's not a good three-point shooter either, but he is a big game
43:07player. He's a big game player. There's no question. No question. So lastly, guys, before we
43:12get up out of here, this broke about an hour before we hit record here. And it's a Darren Fox
43:17and Sacramento King says he wants out new report. He wants out of Sacramento. Man, I can't help but
43:22wonder if this has anything to do with the, the coaching situation, you know, uh, Christie taken
43:27over after the surprising firing and the way they went about it of, uh, of coach Brown. I mean,
43:34how do you guys like, are you surprised? First of all, about the trade request and two, I, any team
43:40at the top of your head that you think would be interested in someone like Fox? Here's the crazy
43:43part about Miami right now. Right. Exactly. They'd be all of a sudden Sacramento, Jimmy Butler,
43:49Darren Fox, there may be some traction, but this is the crazy part to me about all of what we're
43:53talking about. You got one dude in Miami. Who's got 50 million in his pocket. Now got 50 million
43:58coming next year. Who wants to leave? You got a dude in Sacramento who has finally been given a
44:04free reign to be that man. Your team is winning. You are now in a player situation and you want out.
44:12What does it look? What does it take for NBA players to be happy? This is my max. This is
44:17the kind of shit that pisses fans off. It makes them want to not be down with the NBA when you
44:24you've got players and situations that there's literally nothing for you to be
44:27bitching and moaning about or bitching and moaning about stuff that doesn't make sense.
44:32If you're an NBA player, you want to be the man you want to win. You want to get paid
44:36and all those things are happening. And you're like, but I want more.
44:40Well, here's the thing about it. That team is Sacramento wants to give him a max deal.
44:52So if you were him, what the hell are you doing? And the thing about it that, you know, about that
44:58city of Sacramento, it's a one horse pony, one trick pony. And the fact that you are the only
45:08professional game in that area. So people think you essentially walk on water. They got it. They
45:17got an owner of that team. And this is where it was crazy. Somebody told me they said he has a
45:22house in India, 28 stories. That's his house. It's an apartment building, 28 stories. How often do
45:33you see a room? So that's how much money this guy has. So it's not the money. He's just not happy.
45:43And the place he seemed like he would be happy would be Miami with Bam. But how do you get him
45:51there? Because if you're Sacramento, you're not touching Jimmy Butler. You're not bringing him in.
45:57You're not giving them another 50. You're not giving them another. And that's the holdup.
46:02Let me ask you a question. I understand that his days of getting those max deals, they're over.
46:09Would you consider flipping Dearing for Hero? I would do that deal.
46:15Oh, yeah. I would do it. I like literally the minute that deal was like put on the table,
46:20I'm snatching it off the table, find it, find it, my favorite red pin. And like, yes, let's make
46:26if you're Sacramento, why would you make that deal?
46:30To me, I think that might wind up if something like that were to materialize, I think whatever
46:35deal involves Jimmy Butler or Sacramento is going to have to be a three team deal. And it's going to
46:38have to be a team that's throwing some picks in there to sweeten that deal for someone like
46:43Sacramento, for example, who probably don't want to do that. But if you could get a guy like Hero
46:47and get you a couple of first round picks in the process to that deal becomes palatable.
46:53It's not your preferred choice of doing this because preferred is to keep him at his toe.
46:59But if he if he was out, because you don't want you don't want Jimmy Butler 2.0 if you're
47:04Sacramento. So you need to get rid of him. Right, exactly. So and meanwhile, the rest of the Western
47:11Conference is like, phew, thank God that boy wouldn't be out. Shit. We good. They look like
47:17damn. Oklahoma City think like, all right, cool. Houston like that. Cool. Right.
47:25Shit. That's it, man. I just don't see how it all plays out between now and the trade deadline. But
47:30man, stay tuned. I think something's going to something's coming down a couple of trays here
47:34there. Prices for sure. We'll see what the Southerners do. Maybe some type of tweaks or
47:39some kind of signing. But either way, everyone's going to be paying attention. And Max got the
47:43bottle ready. He's ready to go back home to TD Garden to get a win against the Chicago Bulls.
47:51But of course, you already know, we'll be back next week. H. Rob Blakely, appreciate you checking
47:55in, man. Good to see our brothers. Absolutely. Stay off the pepper waves, man. That's all I'm
48:01saying. Oh, I'll try. Oh, damn. He is such a Maxwell. I'm just wait for vote. We'll see you
48:10guys.
