00:00Welcome in Theo Lawson from the Spokesman Review out in Spokane, Washington, bringing
00:13him aboard.
00:14Celtics drafted Anton Watson, Gonzaga wing at 54 overall in the draft this year.
00:20Going to be honest, I did not spend a ton of time watching Gonzaga film this year.
00:24Just going to be flat out honest about that.
00:27I caught a little bit more Crayton just because I dig the uniforms and they were in the top
00:3210 a little bit more.
00:33You know, I got a little bit more of them than they can zag a games in the West Coast
00:36sometimes can be really tough.
00:38But I figured since we talked with Matt Brault last week about Baylor Shireman that I would
00:43bring on this week, Theo to talk a little bit about Watson and Theo's been on the beat
00:47since 2021.
00:48He's seen a lot of good with the Zags over the years he's been there.
00:51Theo, I know it's not been a ton of time, but how has the program sort of changed since
00:55you've been there or it's just been kind of dominance throughout the entire run here?
00:58Yeah, it's kind of been a constant the last three years.
01:01I mean, I mean, this is a program every year that's that's achieving to to get to the get
01:05back to the final four for the first time since since 2021 and is making sweet 16s every
01:12year.
01:13Basically, I think the last nine years they've made at least sweet 16.
01:16So they win they win at least, you know, two games in the tournament, it seems like every
01:20year and entering next season, they're they're projected to be another top five team with
01:25the chance to get back to the final four, haven't obviously captured the the elusive
01:29national title under Mark Few, but they're always in the mix.
01:32And that's kind of where fans have kind of kind of come to expect them to be the last
01:3610 years or so.
01:37Yeah, it's it's awesome.
01:39As someone who is a Syracuse guy, it feels like you guys kind of took our spot of like
01:44a team that's just always around, you know, these sweet 16 every year.
01:48Now we're just kind of like faded back into obscurity as Jim Boeheim totally tanked the
01:53program.
01:54But we're hopefully getting back on track here with Adrian Autry going to coach everybody
01:59up.
02:00But it's been so much fun to watch the Zags.
02:01I don't think there's like not a Gonzaga fan like ever.
02:04I think everybody's just kind of like, yeah, no, I like them.
02:06I think it's I think they have most of the public support on their side unless they play
02:10like a real blue, but like a Kentucky or Yukon or or maybe even a UCLA, like just unless
02:15they're playing somebody really major.
02:17I think everybody loves Gonzaga.
02:18Who can't?
02:20Yeah, yeah, exactly.
02:21Especially in Spokane, they're they're really like professional team on the side of the
02:24state. We don't have any pro teams.
02:26It's, you know, big Mariners, Seahawks, Seattle Kraken now, formerly Supersonics.
02:31But on this side of the state, we're about four hours east of Seattle.
02:35Everyone here is crazy about the Zags.
02:37They sell out every home game.
02:39It's a very small gym at the McCarthy Athletic Center.
02:42So it's really rowdy.
02:43And they've had some pretty impressive home win streak.
02:46So people in this area of the country are pretty, pretty crazy about Gonzaga, but they
02:49really have become a national brand that everyone seems to kind of be reacquainting with
02:54every every March with their with their tournament runs and kind of a fan favorite once
02:59they get to the tournament. Yeah.
03:00And again, there's just been a lot of fun.
03:02I mean, you know, I go back to when I was in college and even like before and like Adam
03:07Morrison, I think is my first real Gonzaga experience.
03:10Let's get into Watson again.
03:12Celtics traps him at fifty four.
03:13Overall, Celtics obviously see something in him.
03:16And I know second round prospects can be kind of dark throws.
03:19It's just kind of the way it is.
03:21Sometimes you get a dream on green and Nicola Jokic.
03:24Sometimes as Celtics fans will understand here, sometimes Jordan Mickey, you know,
03:28sometimes just you got to take that chance.
03:30And this isn't a situation, Theo, that I don't understand the throw.
03:34I totally get it.
03:36But I kind of want to I'd rather hear from you.
03:38Why do you think the Celtics made a smart dart throw with this pick?
03:42Yeah, I think first of all, I don't want to sound too cliche, and I think Brad
03:45Stevens mentioned this a couple of days ago in his press conference.
03:47But Anton Watson is a winning player.
03:50He's won everywhere he's been.
03:53He went to high school here in Spokane, only a couple of miles away
03:55from Gonzaga's campus.
03:57He went to Gonzaga Prep, won two state championships there at the level,
04:01which is a pretty high level.
04:01You're playing against teams from Seattle and whatnot, bigger school.
04:05So won two state titles there and then kind of just more of the same at Gonzaga.
04:09Played for five years, went to the tournament for the five years.
04:12Didn't didn't go the first year because of COVID,
04:14but then went to the national championship game, lost to Baylor that next year.
04:18And then two Sweet 16s won a lead eight.
04:20So so he has a pretty good winning track record.
04:22I think he was the winningest player in the in the draft last week.
04:26So so he's won a lot of games at Gonzaga.
04:28There's a lot of winning things.
04:30Has always kind of been willing to do what it takes to win.
04:32Hasn't always been been flashy.
04:35Hasn't really been a scorer.
04:37Has kind of just done the dirty work and let guys like Drew Timmy
04:40and Chet Holmgren, Jalen Suggs, Corey Kispert do do
04:42do kind of the scoring and the glamorous stuff.
04:45But he's a he's a hard nosed player, a great defender.
04:48I think he's going to be able to defend four to five positions in the NBA.
04:51I think he's someone who can probably defend anyone, but like a Yoko Turet
04:55or Joel Embiid in some of the bigger centers in the NBA.
04:57But he's he's going to do winning stuff and he's going to be coachable
05:00and kind of do what it takes to win.
05:02And that's the thing I want to focus on, the defensive prowess
05:05that Boston has been kind of all over this
05:08since Brad Stevens really got there.
05:10They've really valued defense and guys that can at least got
05:13will quote unquote guard their yard, guys that can hold up against
05:16at least their position.
05:17They love guys that are multi positional defensively.
05:20I mean, you go back to Marcus Smart and Marcus Smart
05:23used to just do stuff that would make me laugh.
05:25You know, he would guard, you know, early Chris Stapps,
05:28Porzingis would get the ball in the post and Smart would just bully him off his spot
05:31and his chest and Porzingis would have no idea what to do.
05:35You know, he would just make me laugh.
05:36Like Drew Howley does stuff all the time this past season with the Celtics.
05:40I mean, that steal against Andrew Nembhard in, you know, in the playoffs
05:44to kind of seal it, to get to the end of these to the NBA finals.
05:48You just laugh like that's an outrageous play for someone to make at that time.
05:52What part of Anton's defensive versatility gives you a similar feeling?
05:58Yeah, I think I think it's his hand.
06:00I think, you know, for the last three or four years, Mark
06:03Few has always talked about Anton has some of the best hands in the country.
06:06He's a great athlete, first of all.
06:08I mean, he's going to be able to to move laterally.
06:12You know, not not not great vertically, but good enough vertically
06:15that he's going to be able to block shots against smaller defenders, I think.
06:17And but I really come back to the hands and he was second all time
06:22at Gonzaga in steals.
06:24Number one all time is a guy named John Stockton.
06:26So John Stockton was also Anton's mentor.
06:29Growing up, I coached him in AAU, has a lot of connections
06:33within the Gonzaga program and kind of locally with local players.
06:36So I learned from one of the best players in NBA history and
06:41didn't didn't quite get a chance to break John's career.
06:44Still records, stills record in five years, but has been one of the best
06:49defenders to come out of Gonzaga and really was kind of a pest with
06:52with the opposing guards big.
06:55So he really guarded the best player on every team Gonzaga played last year.
07:00And so so whoever that player was, they would stick Anton on.
07:02And he usually had a pretty good degree of success guarding anyone.
07:06And a lot of steals didn't gamble a ton is a pretty high IQ defender, too.
07:12I don't think he was going to take a lot of risks,
07:13but he still was able to come with a lot of steals
07:16and then keep guys in front of them.
07:18Pretty rangy, decent size at six, eight to 30 ish.
07:21So I think I think that's the part of his game
07:24that's going to translate best to the NBA and everything else.
07:27I think it's going to be a luxury.
07:29So it sounds like he's an awesome, you know, on ball defender.
07:32I'm more curious now, like the off ball team defensive stuff.
07:36Is that something you think you would struggle with?
07:37You think it's something that he's also good at, but he's just so good on the ball
07:41that this stuff kind of gets pushed to the side?
07:43I think I think he's going to be good either way.
07:44I like, you know, like I said earlier, he's going to be really coachable.
07:47He's a very high IQ player.
07:49He's played, you know,
07:51I don't know how many college games, 160, 170 college games.
07:54So so has a lot of experience playing against
07:58every type of offensive side.
07:59You could you could see probably as a college player has played against,
08:03you know, UConn, Purdue, some of the best college teams in the country,
08:06has guarded some of the best all American type players, NBA lottery type players.
08:10So so so I think he's going to be
08:13pretty solid in whatever system system he's put into.
08:16And right off the ball, right on the ball.
08:18I think he's pretty well rounded in that regard.

09:12I kind of love the history already here.
09:14Like he's been, you know, not under John Stockton's wing,
09:17but has known him for a while, played for him.
09:20I like that.
09:20I also love that his dad played college basketball.
09:22I did a little research.
09:24Come to find out his dad's still the all time leading rebounder at Idaho.
09:27Is that still true?
09:29It is. Yeah.
09:29And that's actually my my alma mater.
09:31So I take a lot of pride in.
09:32Oh, look at this.
09:34His dad, you know, the University of Idaho is about an hour
09:37and a half away from us here in Spokane.
09:38So it's pretty local.
09:39We're right on Idaho border.
09:41Sure. His dad was it was a standout player in Idaho.
09:43I think was the last was on the last Idaho team to make the NCAA tournament.
09:47And I've teased him about not sending Anton to Idaho to follow his footsteps.
09:52But he made a pretty good decision.
09:53Come to Gonzaga here in Spokane and staying at home.
09:56But that was a great basketball part.
09:58Idaho, his brother.
09:59Actually, I covered his brother at Idaho as a football player.
10:01He was a really talented receiver slash tight end for the team
10:05that won a bowl game back in, I think, 2016.
10:08His sister was a D1 volleyball player for president of state.
10:11And I believe she went to Eastern Washington up here as well, too.
10:14So really athletic family.
10:17He's kind of the next in line and obviously the most successful
10:20to get drafted by the Celtics.
10:21Yeah, I love the history of this stuff.
10:23I love the bloodlines.
10:24It's I'm a big like as a Patriots fan, as an aside,
10:28like I love the fact that Drake May has brothers that are ultra competitive
10:32and have played at the highest level in college.
10:34And now Drake's, you know, ascending into, you know, hopeful NFL stardom here.
10:37So I'm a big sucker for that kind of stuff.
10:39And the fact that his dad's the all time
10:41lead leading rebounder in Idaho history, like I think is wonderful.
10:45And it's something that kind of translates to, I think, to Anton's game, too.
10:48I read a quote from his dad talking about how he wanted Anton
10:52to average ten rebounds a game.
10:53Like it shouldn't be an excuse.
10:54You should always be able to get those for a smaller guy
10:58because he's only six and other wingspans of his bigger.
11:00But he's not like a super tall guy.
11:02He's wide, 230 pounds.
11:04Not like he's a small guy.
11:06But, you know, when you're banging bodies
11:07and some of the bigger guys in college basketball,
11:10how does a smaller guy like that make such a big impact on the class?
11:15Yeah, I think it's I think it was just willpower and just kind of energy.
11:19You know, for the first couple of years he was on campus,
11:21he was kind of a spark plug guy off the bench.
11:25I think last year it was that Seth Greenberg, who called him
11:28the best guy in the country.
11:31And then this year he obviously took kind of a leap with his offense scoring more.
11:34But but he's always been a pretty, pretty willing rebounder.
11:36Hasn't really ever come close to ten rebounds a game.
11:38But I think this year around seven rebounds per game was his career high.
11:42But again, he's kind of shared the floor with some some really talented players.
11:46And Drew Timmy and Chet Holmgren two years ago.
11:48So it was always kind of hard to play the minutes needed
11:51to average ten rebounds a game.
11:54But he is a willing rebounder.
11:56He's athletic.
11:57Like I said, I think he's strong enough to box guys out.
12:00I don't think that was ever like his primary role at Gonzaga.
12:03There was always someone else, even Graeme Meekay this last year,
12:06who was kind of more pressed to rebound than Anton was.
12:11But I think he's going to be able to do that at the NBA level.
12:14And whether it's the G League or the NBA average, you know, five, six,
12:17seven rebounds a game.
12:18Yeah, I love I love the tenacity.
12:20I love that.
12:21Just the dad is just instilled from at a very young age.
12:23You got to rebound.
12:24You got to you got to get on the glass.
12:26I love that.
12:26You know, offensively, as we don't have to really sugarcoat this,
12:31he's not going to have to do a whole lot come into this team
12:33as a second round pick on the offensive side of the ball.
12:36They have a bunch of guys second score.
12:38That's not going to be the concern.
12:40But, you know, it's something that has to be somewhat talked about
12:43as we learn who this guy is.
12:44And Brad talked about it post-draft in his press conference
12:48that he just wants Anton to keep it flying.
12:50You know, he did shoot a good percentage from the three point line in college,
12:54but the volume just isn't quite there.
12:56So as you help us understand who Anton is,
13:00is this a thing where he doesn't take a lot of threes
13:04because he doesn't get the ball that much in the flow of the offense
13:07as you not feel as confident there unless he's wide open?
13:10Help us understand the lack of volume from that area,
13:13even though he's shooting such a good percentage.
13:16Yeah, I think it's a combination of both of those things.
13:18And kind of like I mentioned,
13:19he never really had to be an offensive contributor for this team
13:22because of all the players I mentioned.
13:24The Nemhards, the Suggs, the Holmgrens, Timmy, Drew Timmy
13:27left as the school's all time leading scorer.
13:29So he never really had to do that until this last season,
13:33when obviously Drew Timmy graduates, Julian Strother got drafted by the Nuggets
13:36and he has to kind of step into more of an offensive role.
13:39And you saw him shoot the ball a lot more willingly.
13:42I think he was shooting it more.
13:44But I really think the last two years, especially he really decided that,
13:47hey, if I want to play at the next level as a 6'8", you know, 230 pound forward,
13:52I probably have to shoot it better than, you know, I think the first two seasons
13:56he was averaging about 15 percent from the three point line
13:59and then steadily climbed to 22, 33.
14:03And I think he was a hair above 40 on kind of limited attempts,
14:06but more attempts certainly this year.
14:07And the coaches at Gonzaga always believed in him as a shooter.
14:10And I remember an assistant coach last year, Roger Powell,
14:13always say, hey, if you shoot it, it's going in.
14:15And I think he started to build more confidence in the shot.
14:19I think that kind of became the focal point of the last two off seasons.
14:22Coming back to Gonzaga being more of a shooter and then obviously this year,
14:26you know, he saw his numbers go up to 14 and a half points a game.
14:29And there were there were two games in particular
14:31where the offense wasn't really coming from anywhere else.
14:35And so he had two 32 point games against UCLA
14:39and the Maui Invitational and Santa Clara and just kind of took over those games
14:43and decided, hey, no one else is going to do this.
14:45I'll I'll be more aggressive. I'll shoot.
14:47I'll take it to the to the rack.
14:48Get my own rebound and a lot of putbacks and stuff.
14:51He was kind of scoring from everywhere.
14:52I think, you know, went 14 to 15 from the field in one of those games
14:56and really kind of showcased what he could do.
14:58This wasn't going to happen every night, but you can see in small sample sizes
15:01that that he's he's capable of doing that every now and then.
15:04And obviously the three point numbers shooting, you know, one and a half
15:08three is a game this year with with with his career high.
15:10And I think he's going to be able to kind of kind of keep building that shot.
15:13And hopefully the NBA range doesn't mess with that.
15:16But he can kind of be in that 35 to 40 percent range.
15:19I think I think it's something that at least other teams have to respect.
15:22Yeah. And again, it's it's easy to get on the floor at any point
15:25because of his defense and stuff for the offense and stuff.
15:28But it's not I can't do it.
15:29And we have some really coming up here, Theo.
15:31So I'll get you out here on this.
15:33You know, it's going to be a loaded particular roster at that position.
15:36They have Jordan Walsh from Arkansas last year, his second year on the team
15:41this year, had a decent year in the G League.
15:43Curious to see what he does.
15:44Baylor Shireman, obviously the first round pick 30 overall.
15:47Great. And he's going to be in the same sort of position.
15:49He's there's wings already kind of in place here.
15:51But what should we look forward to as we we are chopping the bit here
15:55for summer league coming up in a few weeks?
15:58Yeah, I think he's I think he's pretty, pretty excited for the opportunity.
16:00I had a chance to talk to him on draft night.
16:02And I think he was planning on spending the weekend in Spokane
16:05and then getting out to Boston for mini camp.
16:08And so I think he just wants to come in there and do what he's been doing.
16:11I don't think, you know, I've covered some really the last couple of years.
16:15And you see a lot of guys trying to go out there and do a little bit too much,
16:19get their own score, do stuff like that.
16:22But I think knowing Anton and what he's done in Gonzaga, he's going to
16:25do what he's asked to do.
16:26And he's going to defend it at a very high level, lock up other players
16:30and try to kind of make names himself that way and not not overdo it.
16:34I think that's the key for a rookie coming into their first summer league.
16:37And and, you know, whether he ends up with the G League
16:41opportunity or to a or with the Celtics, I think
16:45I think he has to kind of just do what he's been doing and do it.
16:48You know, the Celtics drafted him to do and defend and make the right plays.
16:51Be a high player.
16:53He's always been a great teammate.
16:55Kind of kind of more of a more of an introvert, kind of quiet,
16:58but but always done things the right way on and off the court.
17:01So so I think that's going to be the key for a second round draft pick,
17:05not do too much and just kind of not just blend in, but not not try to overdo it
17:10and score too much or kind of get out of his comfort zone.
17:13It's Theo Lawson from the Spokesman Review out in Spokane, Washington.

17:27Adam will be back next week with us.
17:29No question about that.
17:30Obviously, you know, a little bit of vacation in the summertime.
17:33I got one coming up soon as well.
17:34So we're all kind of balancing it out here.
17:36But I hope Adam had a great time on vacation this week.
17:38Theo, thanks for joining us, man.
17:40I learned a lot about about our boy Anton, and I'm thrilled to get,
17:43you know, a couple of weeks, a couple of days.
17:45Really, when this thing drops, it'll be Saturday.
17:48And this is currently Tuesday, so not too much longer.
17:50We get to see him in action in a green uniform.
17:52I'm thrilled about it.
17:53So thanks for taking some time.
17:54Buddy, thank you.
17:55Yep, thanks for having me.
