00:00My Outro For My 20th Birthday
00:30Hello and welcome to Latest TV News, I'm Sam Morton, reporter for Sussex World and
00:37I'll be bringing you the top stories from across the county, before I speak to Brighton
00:40and Hove Albion writers Darren Howard and Henry Bryant about the Seagulls continued
00:44search for a new manager.
00:47Sussex Police has issued an appeal after a motorhome was stolen in Eastbourne. Officers
00:52responded to reports of a stolen Fiat Ducato from Latimer Road in the early hours of Saturday
00:58June 1st. The police are now appealing for witnesses to the incident. If witnesses or
01:03anyone with relevant information, such as CCTV or dash cam footage, are asked to report
01:07it to Sussex Police online, quoting Serial 128 of the 1st June.
01:12Plans have been submitted for a new takeaway to come to Hailsham. The new hot takeaway
01:17would be converted from an empty storage unit on Diplock's Way in the town. The planning
01:21statement says that since 2016, Unit 12 has been unoccupied, not offering much to Hailsham.
01:28They said the area is an amazing location for a takeaway, especially in regards to the
01:32units resembling a takeaway layout. As can be seen, the takeaway area will be serviced
01:36in close proximity to many other businesses. The takeaway will look to employ up to four
01:41staff members, further providing additional jobs to the district. The application also
01:46seeks to install a new extraction ventilation system as part of the new takeaway.
01:50Meanwhile, a new hotel in Rottingdean has been selected in the National Newspaper's
01:54Top 10 list. The Guardian has chosen 10 of the UK's best new and revamped seaside hotels.
02:01The list features Worthing's Sleep Eco Hotel and Rottingdean's brand new The White Horses
02:06Hotel which is set to open next month. The first hotel to open from the exclusive
02:10Everly Hotels collection, The White Horses is a new premium hotel situated on the East
02:15Sussex coastline which is set to transform the Rottingdean seafront with beautifully
02:19appointed accommodation and dining filled with local influences. A total of 415 runners
02:25took part in Hastings Runners' flagship Sussex Grand Prix event in sunny but breezy conditions.
02:31The five-mile Keith Chandler Memorial Road Race proved a superb advert for the club with
02:35around 130 Hastings Runners members turning out. The club won both the Men's and Ladies
02:40Teams awards and also picked up no fewer than seven age category prizes.
02:45Finally, the golden age of steam was being relived at the weekend when the Kent and East
02:49Sussex Steam Railway held a big gala to mark its 50th anniversary. The railway has its
02:55main base at Tenderden station in Kent, close to the Sussex border, but runs trains to stations
03:00in East Sussex at Bodium, Northiam and Robertsbridge. The original line was a victim of the beaching
03:06cut in the 1950s but miles of it have been lovingly restored by an army of enthusiastic
03:11volunteers over the years.
03:15Okay, good morning and welcome to another episode of Goal Malfaction podcast where we
03:26take a look at all the latest goings on at Brighton and Hove Albion. I'm Darren Howard
03:31and this week I'm joined by Brighton expert and Sussex World reporter Henry Bryant and
03:35Sussex World sports reporter Sam Morton as well. Brighton's search for a successor to
03:41Robert Di Zerbi continues. We've been keeping up to speed with all the latest developments
03:46and you can read all the stories we're talking about with videos and pictures online at
03:51Sussexworld.co.uk forward slash sport and you can check out other great videos on
03:56shotstv.com and Freeview channel 276. You may also be watching on latest TV, so thank
04:03you very much for tuning in. But we start with the Brighton manager situation. Still
04:10no news on Graham Potter or Steve Cooper. Henrik Reinstorm, I think I'm pronouncing
04:17that quickly, remains the third favourite, but there's no word from the club and it's
04:21all fairly quiet. Where do you think we're at, Sam, with the search? We're sort of more
04:27than two weeks in now, aren't we, after Di Zerbi left?
04:30Yeah, it's all very quiet, isn't it, Darren, really? It's very strange because obviously
04:34I think we discussed last week that obviously when Di Zerbi left we just kind of just assumed
04:38that Brighton had a plan and it wouldn't take too long for a successor to come in. It hasn't
04:44worked out like that at all, really. It's all very quiet and obviously it's difficult
04:50to know what the club are planning to do and it does seem like Potter was an option and
04:56maybe still is an option, but you feel like if that was going to happen it would have
04:59already happened. I think Ian Hart was saying that in the last episode that it just strikes
05:06us a bit odd that when they had him as manager before they've obviously still got him, close
05:11contact and things like that. You just think that if that was going to happen he's out
05:14of a job and it could be quite a quick transition if it was something they both agreed to. So
05:20it does beg the question whether maybe he's waiting for the England job if Gareth Southgate
05:24was to leave England. It's a bit strange on the Grey and Potter side of things and what's
05:29going on with that one. So yeah, it's a difficult one. Obviously it is very quiet and as you
05:35say there's been some other names linked like Henrik Rijstroom and Steve Cooper, but
05:41I guess it's all just hearsay at the moment, isn't it? It's difficult to narrow down an
05:46exact plan that we think Brighton are going to go with. So definitely it's an interesting
05:51one and it's just tough to call really.
05:57I think some fans are keen to get it resolved so that they can start the pre-season preparations
06:06and the transfer situation, Henry. Grey and Potter was also linked to Fyenoord today as
06:12well. Obviously they're looking for a replacement for Arnie Slott who moved to Liverpool. Fyenoord
06:18are champions, you know, they'll be playing Champions League football again next season.
06:22But yeah, do you think the club are obviously, they must be working really hard behind the
06:26scenes so you've got to trust the process of the club really, haven't you? That they're
06:30working hard and we'll get the right man in?
06:33I think, yeah, I'd have to agree. I think they've been stumped with the likes of Kieran
06:38McKenna signing a new contract at Ipswich. I think that that was their go-to man really
06:45and it's just not worked out for him. And I mean fair enough to Kieran, he's done a
06:49fantastic job at Ipswich and he wants to, you know, at least have a season with them
06:54up in the Premier League and who wouldn't after getting their side promoted in that
06:58fashion and they've done really well. I think that, yeah, I think Grey and Potter, according
07:04to some sources at least, is going to look for that England job potentially if Gareth
07:10Southgate doesn't renew his contract after the Euro 2024. I think in terms of an England
07:18manager he hasn't really been proven I'd say and he's not really had that sort of
07:23calibre that you would look at an England manager for. But I think I can see it happening
07:28if I'm honest and it's been such a tricky one for Brighton and I think the fans as well.
07:34I think they know if they did end up bringing Grey and Potter in there would be a massive
07:39divide as we've spoken about previously and the fact that you'd almost be coming in having
07:45an uphill battle with some of the fans I don't think would sit right for Tony Bloom
07:52and Barber in general. If you look at the list of people we've got, we've even got the
07:57likes of Brendan Rodgers. No, he's not on the sort of favourites list but he plays a
08:03very possession-based style of football when he's managing and his passing from the back
08:09to attacking flow is very similar to that of Deservees that we've seen previously. So,
08:14I think he'd be a good option and as you were mentioning as well, Henrik Rydström in the
08:19Swedish league at the moment managing Malmo who are currently first. I think that when
08:25you see those sort of unheard names it's always Brighton to sign them. I mean Roberto Deservees,
08:32no one really knew who he was. Grey and Potter as well, I mean he was managing abroad, came
08:37to Swansea and had only had a little bit of time there before he was put straight into
08:42the Premier League and done really well. So, I think as Brighton fans and people that follow
08:48the club they know that they can trust Brighton but I think they're having a lot more of an issue
08:53than they realised. Yeah, just on Brighton obviously he has been backed by a Brighton
08:58player hasn't he? Yassine Ayari. Yes. He made quite a funny comment saying, we asked if it
09:04was just a rumour and said it would be sick if it came true. He's a great coach, he likes to
09:09play good football. The rumour can't be completely stupid because Brighton look at data and stats
09:14and he has very good statistics in the Swedish league. So, that could be promising and a bit of
09:19endorsement there from one of his compatriots. So, yeah there definitely could be one that Brighton
09:24could be looking at. Yeah, it could be another ace up Brighton's sleeve again which we'll just
09:28have to wait and see and trust the process that they get the right man in. But away from
09:34the manager search, the news came through this week that Stephen Alzate has left the club I think
09:40after seven seasons at Brighton at Hope Albion. He's a good midfielder Sam wasn't he? But never
09:47really had a regular run in the team. He sort of introduced under Graham Potter then went out on
09:51loan a couple of times to the Belgium league. I think there'll be a few takers for him won't
09:56there? Having him on a free transfer you'd have thought. I heard Rangers, Glasgow Rangers are
10:01supposed to be quite keen. Yeah and obviously he's a good player who can do a job for a number
10:08of teams I think really and obviously he's at a good age of 25. He can still develop and be molded
10:14into a really good midfielder and as you say he hasn't really had that opportunity to thrive at
10:18Brighton. He joined the club in 2017 from Leighton Orient and made 72 appearances for the club in all
10:24competitions including 52 starts which it almost seems like that's a lot. I don't remember making
10:31as many really but for the last two seasons he's been on loan with Standard Liège and Belgium
10:36and played 47 times for them in all competitions. But yeah as I mentioned really he is a tidy player
10:43and he can do a job for a number of teams. I do wish him well for the future and hope he does
10:49find a team that he can play regularly for and it was clear that wasn't going to happen at Brighton.
11:01So thanks again for joining us on the Goldmouth Action podcast and we're talking about all
11:14things Brighton Hove Albion and this summer we've got the Euros to look forward to and also the
11:18Copa America where Brighton will have a few players over there representing the club.
11:25But we'll start Henry with Bart Verbruggen who's going to be the Dutch number one goalkeeper.
11:34Ronald Koeman confirmed that he's the main man going into the Euros. That's a huge boost of
11:40confidence isn't it for Verbruggen at age just 21. Yeah as you say age 21 it's a great achievement
11:51for him. We know that the lifespan of goalkeepers is that much longer than other outfield players so
12:00it's just fantastic to see that he's been given that privilege and being able to have that game
12:07time. I think when he came with us this season I think there were a few moments of uncertainty,
12:14a few moments where you'd think that maybe the goalkeeper should have saved it or should have
12:19kept hold of it and conceded a few goals in that aspect but I think Brighton fans can forgive that
12:24because of the talent that we've got on our hands. It was very similar to watching De Gea in his first
12:30sort of half season at Manchester United when he was in between the sticks. A few mistakes made
12:38there and there were a few instances where some fans at the time were saying oh we're not sure
12:43about this young goalkeeper but he did do absolutely amazingly and I think that Brighton
12:49have got themselves a real gem in Verbruggen. I hope he does well and I hope he's able to
12:54sort of you know enforce his confidence and bring that into Brighton for next season because I think
13:01whoever we get in it will be another manager that will look to play from the back and sort of attack
13:07on those wings. So to have Verbruggen v2 maybe next season with that little bit more confidence,
13:14that little bit more swagger in you know passing it about and just making sure the defence have a
13:20good morale and a good sort of relaxed sort of base to trust their goalkeeper would be fantastic for us.
13:28He looks a confident character doesn't he and I think if he has a good Euros
13:33this summer then that would be great for Brighton. But just going through the list so
13:38Brighton have got Dennis Zendev, he's going to be in Germany. Pascal Gross also in Germany,
13:43Verbruggen, Holland, the Netherlands, Billy Gilmore, Scotland, Lewis Dunk hopefully he'll
13:51make the cut. I saw James Madison was left out of the squad isn't he? He's going to be
13:56left out. Is it Saturday that Southgate will announce the final squad isn't it Sam I think?
14:04I think so yeah I think it is Saturday obviously and the game against Iceland is on Friday so
14:09for kind of a final chance to test some players out and to test some of the systems it'll be
14:14using in the Euros and to work out. But obviously he's made that early decision on James Madison
14:19not to bring him and yeah I was a bit surprised by that actually because I mean you can really
14:23offer something different but it just shows a level of quality in the squad that you can
14:28afford to leave out someone of the quality of James Madison really and time will tell
14:32obviously if Lewis Dunk makes it and I really hope he does. He played quite well didn't he
14:36against Bosnia I thought he did he looked quite good in this place. Was it 73 minutes I think?
14:40Yeah 73 minutes yeah got a clean sheet so that's always positive and yeah he looks more composed
14:46and obviously he's going to have bigger and better attackers to deal with in the Euros but I think
14:54yeah he did a good job and hopefully Gareth Southgate sees fit to include him in the squad
15:00because we know from following Brighton just how brilliant Lewis Dunk is and how much of a
15:05cool head he is and he can really be a vital figure in that England squad really so yeah I'd
15:11really like to see him go along to the Euros. Yeah no good luck to him and yeah there's also
15:18Jacob Moda as well he's coming back to fitness he'll be in for Poland.
15:24Valentin Barco he's hoping to make the Argentina team for the Copa America. Julio Enciso as well
15:30with Paraguay he should be in the Copa America. Jeremy Sarmiento and also Tom McGill the goalkeeper
15:38he'll be going with Canada as well he's the third choice goalkeeper at Brighton. Who are you
15:43looking forward to watching this summer Henry from the Brighton players? Well I'd have to say
15:50Lewis Dunk especially if he is included I think that that would be a big one for us and I mean
15:58I do hope he's brought in because I know that he's had some issues especially when he was played
16:03against Belgium and he got done by Lukaku and literally the week before it was almost a
16:11very similar situation against Roma and I just thought I felt so sorry for him but I think
16:18that he'd be a great one to watch. Also there may be one that isn't to be expected but Julio
16:25Enciso and Jacob Moda I think that talk about Jacob Moda first. Zerby had said in a press
16:31conference previously when he was coming back from injury at the Albion that he brings something
16:35a lot different to his other options at the team and I think he just is building his confidence
16:41back up through the injury and time that he's had out and it would be really interesting to see how
16:47he performs because he could be a standout player for Brighton next season if he picks up a bit of
16:52form and he was getting some game time near the end of the season as well which was great to see.
16:57It would be interesting to see if the next manager that comes in will offer him that
17:01sort of game time and a chance to come back as well or if he'll end up like Alzate and just
17:07not get that opportunity again and with Enciso I mean the creativity that he gives us is immaculate.
17:16It's really great to see so that'll be another interesting watch for Albion fans.
17:21Yeah, I think it would be great for Enciso as well because he again similar to Verbruggen
17:28a good Copa America would then have him coming back to next season sort of fit and ready to go
17:33because he didn't because of his knee injury he hasn't played a lot for them and I think
17:38who have they got? So Paraguay they've got Colombia, Costa Rica and Brazil
17:43in their group so that's going to be a big summer for him isn't it Sam after the injuries he's had.
17:50So who were you saying?
17:52Enciso, Julio Enciso yeah.
17:55Yeah absolutely I think he's really been hampered by injuries this season in Enciso and he obviously
18:00missed a huge chunk and he's been such a brilliant player for Brighton when he's played obviously
18:05really burst onto the scene the season before last and scored some incredible goals obviously
18:10no better than against Chelsea and Man City and yeah just following up from that you kind of
18:16really expected him to kick on and have an even better season and as I say injuries really did
18:21hamper him. When he came back it took a little bit of time to settle back into the team but it
18:26was just in that final stretch of the season he really did start to show what he can do again and
18:32was really showing some brilliant performances really and he's really impressing again and
18:38at the end of the season came at a bad time for him and I really hope he has a great Copa America
18:45and he can come back from that with full of confidence and can help Brighton get off to a
18:50brilliant start in the new season and I think he's gonna be crucial I think for any new manager
18:54coming into Brighton they'll look at him as being someone they can really mould the team around a
18:58little bit and to really benefit from his abilities and his talents and the sky's the
19:04limit for him really I think so I've not seen as those two goals I mentioned I've not seen many
19:09players strike the ball as well as him and he's such an energetic player as well he can turn
19:13defence into attack really quickly and yeah he's a great player great player to watch so
19:18I'm looking forward to watching him for Copa America definitely and Billy Gilmore's another
19:22one I'm looking forward to seeing for Scotland in the Euros and we know that obviously what he
19:27can do and he's such a key figure for Brighton and Scotland so it'd be yeah really great to see
19:32what he can do in the Euros for his country obviously in a tough group that they're in
19:36and obviously they're up against Germany so it'll be a few familiar faces.
19:43Great games to watch that I'm really looking forward to that and yeah you mentioned Bart
19:47Verbruggen I'm really keen to see how he does for the Netherlands in goal but yeah he's had a
19:52great season I think just coming up to the end of the season he really was the number one after
19:57chopping and changing between Jason Stiltman and Verbruggen throughout the season Verbruggen
20:00really was the one the one that deservedly settled on towards the end of the season so
20:05I hope that he can continue that form for his country and for the club next season.
20:10Yeah yeah no it's it'll be good it'll be good and also Valentin Barco Henry he's he looked pretty
20:17good in the back end of the of last season and he's in with a chance isn't he of making the
20:23the Argentina final cut as well that just shows again how you know that Brighton have really got
20:30another a great player on their hands. Definitely at 19 years old and his confidence has been
20:39building at the Albion with the game time that he's been given coming off the bench in you know
20:45his starting appearances and then making his name on the team shift sheet a couple of times as well
20:50which was good to see. I think there were a few mistakes made especially when Brighton got thumped
20:56a little bit at Manchester City when they were at home a few mistakes around the back that were seen
21:03but Roberto de Zerbi commented on that after the game when he was manager and was just saying that
21:08he is just building his confidence yes he's made mistakes but he was one of our best players on the
21:12pitch which just shows the you know the talent that Brighton are able to sort of you know get
21:19at the club it is really remarkable and I think lots of football fans commend Brighton for that.
21:26I think that he's another one of those players where with a little bit of confidence and
21:30potentially getting into that Argentina squad he could have a you know a game-changing world beating
21:36you know in a form of play and you know start and hit the ground running for Brighton it'd
21:42be really interesting to see how our young players perform actually.
