00:27Hello and welcome to Latest TV News.
00:34I'm Sam Mawson, reporter for Sussex World, and in this week's show we will be reflecting on Brighton & Hove Albion's disastrous 7-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest, before we look ahead to a doubleheader against Chelsea.
00:46First, here are the top stories from across Sussex.
00:50The RSPCA is appealing for information after it said the body of a very thin horse was found dumped by the side of a road in East Sussex.
00:58Several members of the public contacted the animal charity after spotting the grisly sight on the roadside, the RSPCA said.
01:05The female cob was in a very emacitated state and a rachet strap had been used to tie her body to a telegraph pole by the roadside.
01:12The animal was found on the roadside on Chubby Hill Lane at Seddlescombe near Battle on the morning of Monday, January 27th.
01:19Following an expression of interest from the leaders of Brighton & Hove City Council, East Sussex County Council and West Sussex County Council Ministers have approved proposals to create a Mayoral Strategic Authority for Sussex.
01:32It will be made up of an elected Mayor and two members of each constituent authority with strategic powers for transport, public safety, health, environment and climate change, housing, economic growth, skills and jobs.
01:45The government will now begin a consultation to seek the views of people and organisations in Sussex and it will mean that this May's County Council elections will now be elections for Sussex's new Mayor.
01:54A trust is objecting to a planning application for a drainage pipe which they fear could damage ponds in Hurstmansoe.
02:00The Lime Park Heritage Trust wrote to the District Planning Officer and Wealdon District Council to express their strongest possible objection to the proposed diversion of surface water from a field adjacent to the pond network at Lime Park.
02:13They said the proposal poses a severe threat to the established ecosystem, local heritage and amenity value at this unique site.
02:21Trees have been felled at a West Sussex Nature Reserve due to destructive disease.
02:26Adrian Worthing Council revealed in January that trees which had been weakened due to ash dieback would need to be felled across both districts.
02:34Members of the public were asked to keep themselves and their dogs away from the danger zones.
02:38A social media post on January 8th read, we've had to begin felling trees in woodland areas that have been affected by the destructive disease ash dieback.
02:47Work has since been completed at Lansing Ring with the Council's contractor now set to move on to Sheepcomb Hangar and Cisbury Fields in Worthing.
02:55Finally, a pod of dolphins has been spotted off the coast of Eastbourne.
02:59Simon Logan spotted the pod of approximately 50 common dolphins about 15 miles from Beachy Head.
03:05The pod included juveniles and calves according to the Sussex Dolphin Trust which records sightings just like this one.
03:11Thea Taylor, Sussex Dolphin Project Managing Director said, these striking dolphins are infrequent visitors to the Sussex coast and often form much larger pods than any other species in Sussex, sometimes into their hundreds.
03:24Stay tuned for the Goldmouth Action Podcast.

04:32Another Lewis Duncan goal and a hat-trick from former Seagull Chris Wood helped Forest continue their push for the Champions League.
04:40That was quite something, wasn't it Darren? Can you sum that performance up for us? It looked like Albion were all over the place in that game.
04:48It's very difficult to sum that one up. I spoke to some of the Brighton fans as we were on the way back down the M1 and stopped off at some of the service stations.
05:01The first thing they mentioned was that they got up early. It was a 12 o'clock kick-off and they went all that way and it was such a disappointing result.
05:10They're also quick to say though that they've been to their regular away supporters and they've had some great away days this season.
05:18The main talking point was the team line-up and the formation that he went with. It was pretty much like a 4-1-5 formation.
05:30He had quite a few injuries to his midfielders. He actually said afterwards that there wasn't one midfielder in the whole team that could play for 90 minutes.
05:40He put Jack Hinshelwood, who'd just come back from 10 games or something with a knee injury, and he was the lone midfielder in front of this defence.
05:51Literally, his first start back for 10 days and he was tasked with this. He was set out to fail in a way. It was a tough first half for him.
06:03He got picked early on and he had to tread really carefully. Then it was Matoma on the left, Minte on the right, Rutter, Pedro and then Welbeck up front as well.
06:16It was those front five. Unless you control the possession, you're really going to be up against it.
06:23They just didn't do enough with the ball. They weren't good enough with the ball. They didn't keep the ball well.
06:29Forrests just picked them off. They looked as though they were just going to steamroll through them at every opportunity.
06:35It could have been 10, really. It could have been more. He did change it at half-time.
06:43Two midfielders, Matt O'Reilly and Diego Gomez, came on at half-time. By then, the confidence just looked so low.
06:50Forrests were playing really well. It was quite ruthless, really. It was a tough, tough watch if you're an Albion fan.
07:00The press conference was this morning. Herzele said he hopes the players will look at that and think,
07:06this can be a turning point in my career. This is what I need to do. Probably Herzele will look at that himself as well.
07:13He can learn a lot from that as well. His tactics and how he set his team up for that match as well.
07:22Much to cut through for that.
07:27I enjoyed the story about the pub in Nottingham that said they would give a free pint every time Forrests scored.
07:34I saw that.
07:36The club went in and gave him a free t-shirt and some free tickets. Lovely story. I enjoyed that.
07:43Two wins in the last 12 for Brighton now, Sam. It's perhaps too early to say he's under pressure,
07:49but surely he's under a lot of scrutiny now, isn't he?
07:52Yes, he certainly is. It's always going to be a difficult one after you've had such a heavy defeat.
07:59There's going to be people calling for answers and some kind of reason for that happening.
08:06They'll look to blame someone at the end of the day. I read an opinion piece that was posted.
08:12Herzele was completely at fault for the first half and the players were at fault for the second half.
08:19It was just a little bit bizarre, as Darius mentioned, the way he set up with Hinshaw.
08:25It's one thing starting that way. It's another thing they're not changing it after you've conceded a couple of goals.
08:31They're not reacting to do something about it. It's a little bit concerning.
08:36As he's watching the team fall apart, there were shades of that Chelsea game at Stamford Bridge earlier in the season,
08:42where Chelsea on another day could have scored 10 for the chances they had.
08:46It was a little bit like that, but Forrests were just more clinical than Chelsea were on that day.
08:53I think it's definitely a concern that that can happen, that Breitkamp can be so badly beaten.
09:00Obviously, Herzele needs time to fix these issues. He's still a very young coach.
09:07He's going to hopefully learn from these games and that will help his development as a manager.
09:11I still think the results that he's had so early in his career, he's earned the right to at least finish the season.
09:18I think it is really unfair to say that he should lose his job already.
09:23Some of the results he's had against big teams, including City, Arsenal, Man Utd, and even good performances against Liverpool as well.
09:30I feel like it would be really harsh to sack him in this stage after that performance, despite it being a really bad one, obviously.
09:38It will be important to see a good reaction from Brighton against the two games against Chelsea coming up.
09:43What a wonderful segue. You've done this before.
09:46Brighton now face Chelsea in the FA Cup and then in the league the following week.
09:52One of those weird coincidences where they have to play them twice in a week because of the cup draw.
09:56How important are these two games, Darren?
09:59As Sam said, it does increase the scrutiny on Herzele after those matches.
10:05I don't really like it when there are games in quick succession, when they have to play the same team twice.
10:12It's just the way it's worked out.
10:15Obviously, Chelsea, I guess things have moved on a little bit from when there was that intense rivalry when Potter left to Chelsea.
10:24But it still moves on a little bit with Brighton fans.
10:28Obviously, there's still Caicedo there, there's Kukerea still at Chelsea.
10:34It would be interesting to see if Sanchez, who struggled in goal for Chelsea in the last few matches,
10:40I think he was dropped for the game against West Ham, whether he comes back into the FA Cup team as well.
10:46So, there's still quite a connection between the two clubs.
10:50But from Brighton's perspective, they had a really bad performance at Chelsea against Stamford Bridge
10:55when Cole Palmer just ran right against Brighton.
10:58He had so much space against Brighton.
11:00Brighton were playing this crazy high line, which was just a bit of a wake-up call and a disaster.
11:09And Brighton had been a little bit more settled.
11:11They'd still been far too leaky in the Premier League this season.
11:15But they just looked as though they were getting back on track a little bit before this Nottingham Forest result.
11:21So, yeah, much is going to depend on how they bounce back from that and how much confidence it's taken from them.
11:27And the main thing that Hersella was asking for was to have that intensity, once that intensity back into the line-up.
11:35So, that's going to be key, just to see how much confidence that's taken out of Brian Moore.
11:41Indeed, yeah.
11:42And the transfer window closed on Monday.
11:44So, Reverend Ferguson moved on loan to West Ham, while Greece striker Stefanos Zimas signed for around £22m.
11:51He will complete his loan at FC Nuremberg and then team up with Hersella's team in the summer.
11:56What did you make of all that, Sam?
11:58Yeah, it's a strange situation, isn't it?
12:01So, you mentioned obviously Zimas has signed a contract that runs until June 2030.
12:05But he'll remain on loan at FC Nuremberg for the second half of the season and team up with the Seagulls in the summer.
12:11And by then, Brighton will have a chance to see how Ferguson has performed at West Ham and reassess their striking options going forward.
12:18The Republic of Ireland international is still just 20 years old and his contract is obviously until June 2029.
12:24And it does leave Albion in a very strong position and obviously with a number of attacking options to assess.
12:31Obviously, Welbeck has been in the form of his career this season.
12:36And you wonder how long that will continue and if Age will start to catch up with him a little bit going forward.
12:42And obviously, you've still got Jal Pedro and Jorginho Rutter.
12:45So, they're able to cover a lot of bases going forward this season.
12:48But you just do wonder next season if Jal Pedro, for example, will still be at the club.
12:53So, time will tell if obviously some big names come in for him with some big bids and that kind of thing.
12:59But Zimmas was a player very much in demand and was even linked with the move to Liverpool before opting for Brighton.
13:05The same actually happened with Ferguson in 2021 with the opportunity to go to Anfield.
13:10But he chose Albion due to the chances for increased game time.
13:14Von Zimmas, Hürzler, basically said he's an out-and-out centre-forward with a natural ability to score goals.
13:21He's absolutely delighted to have signed him.
13:23He will join up in the summer ahead of next season.
13:25And he's really looking forward to working with him and feels he has a very exciting future.
13:29So, yeah, an exciting signing for Brighton, another long-term one.
13:32And hopefully, he can hit the ground running when he eventually does join up with the club.
13:36And I hope Ferguson also has a successful loan spell at West Ham as well, obviously under his former boss, Braydon Potter.
13:45So, yeah, fingers crossed he does well and Brighton can have a really strong position going forward next season.
13:52Absolutely. And before we go for a break, what were the other key deals in the transfer window, Deren?
13:57Karam Osama stayed while Aaron Kashin and Diego Gomez arrived.
14:01Are they good deals for Brighton?
14:04Yeah, I think so. Yeah, very, very sort of solid sort of transfer window.
14:08I didn't expect too much business after the 200 million they spent last summer.
14:12And a lot of those players, for various reasons, haven't been able to produce their best yet.
14:17So we've still got the best to come from the summer arrivals.
14:21But Aaron Kashin came in from Derby for an initial fee of around about nine million.
14:26I think there's a few add-ons there which could take it up to about 12 million in total.
14:31So he signed on until June 2030.
14:35And I think the need for a defender was highlighted.
14:38You can't just take it from that one game.
14:40But they have struggled this season defensively and he looks a good solid addition.
14:45He impressed in League One.
14:47He's impressed in the championship and Brighton are very confident at the age of 23.
14:51He's now ready to step up to the Premier League.
14:56Diego Gomez, obviously, he's already been there.
14:59He came early in the window January the 1st.
15:02So he made his debut in the win at Manchester United as a late substitute.
15:07He played the second half at Nottingham Forest.
15:09So, yeah, he could be a good addition as well.
15:13And Keeping Karamatoma, you know, he's my favourite player at Brighton, to be honest.
15:18I love watching him play.
15:19I think he's just such a classy addition on the attacking player.
15:23But I was getting concerned when those bids kept seem to be going higher and higher.
15:28I thought Brighton made Kashin on it.
15:31But I think he wanted to stay.
15:34He wanted to play in the Premier League and one day compete in the Champions League.
15:37I don't think a move to Saudi suited anybody at this stage.
15:42The other ones, McConville, he went to Norwich for a million.
15:47Ed Turns, he's also left.
15:50Yacob Moda went to Feyenoord.
15:52Valentin Barco, he completed a loan to Strasbourg after he struggled in Seville in the early part of the season.
15:58That's an obligation to buy as well.
16:01And the other one, Brighton were pushing to sign Tommy Watson from Sunderland.
16:05They bid around about 10 million but couldn't get that one over the line in time before deadline.
16:10And they might revisit that in the summer.
16:13Yeah, brilliant.
16:14Right, well, can I have a short break now?
16:17And I'm going to seamlessly turn into Darren as he asks us questions about Crawley Town.
16:31Welcome back to part two.
17:00And Crawley Town faced League One moneymen Wrexham and were Crawley robbed of a point at the last kick of the game.
17:06Tell us what happened with that from last weekend, Mark.
17:09Oh, it was so gutting.
17:11So Crawley played really well throughout the whole game.
17:13They let in an early goal.
17:15A little bit of lattice or just Wrexham caught Crawley colder.
17:18Basically, they opened them up.
17:20Matty James scored quite a good goal.
17:22Then Crawley dominated for the rest of the game.
17:25Wrexham just sat back, let Crawley play.
17:29But they couldn't quite score.
17:30And then in the last minute of normal, in the 90 minutes, Bradley Ibrahim, I urge anyone to watch it if they haven't seen it,
17:38an absolute screamer from about 25 yards of volley into the top corner.
17:43Yeah.
17:44And everybody thought, oh, brilliant.
17:46It's a well-deserved point.
17:47Crawley probably deserves to win it in terms of possession, chances, all the other stats.
17:53But then at the other end, seemingly at first, it looked like Elliot Lee, unmarked in the box, headed home.
17:58And you just think, oh, Crawley switched off after they thought they'd got a point.
18:02But then when you look at the replays and the anger from everybody around who was there,
18:07you could see in the build-up, Elliot Lee literally grabs Jeremy Kelly by his shirt, pulls him to the ground to get him out of the way,
18:15because Kelly was blocking his run.
18:17And he just walked in and nutted it in.
18:19But the referee didn't see it.
18:21Nobody saw it apart from everybody else.
18:25But the people that mattered didn't see it.
18:27And it was so frustrating because Crawley had played so well.
18:31And Rob Elliot, I mean, I was at the game, but I couldn't.
18:34I had to go out in the evening, so I couldn't stay for too long for the press.
18:37But Rob Elliot's normally quite quick.
18:39He was in with the referee for about 20 minutes after the game, just trying to find out what's going on.
18:44How does that happen?
18:46Because when you watch it back, it's such an obvious foul.
18:49It's just, how does nobody see that kind of thing?
18:52I mean, if that was VAR, it would have been ruled out.
18:55There's absolutely no doubt about it.
18:57But there's not.
18:58So they just have to, yeah, they have to just get over that and move on.
19:02But it's not an easy one.
19:04I mean, Rob Elliot said after the game, these things can't happen.
19:07Because when you're Wrexham, and if you draw that game or lose that game, it doesn't really matter.
19:14Crawley, they're fighting for their lives at the moment.
19:17And just little things are not going their way.
19:20They're dominating games, but they just can't get over their line in games.
19:22And some of it's their own fault.
19:24But when you have things like this, it's just so frustrating for them.
19:27Yeah, yeah.
19:28And Wrexham, they're looking for their third straight promotion, aren't they?
19:32And what did you make of them, Mark?
19:34Do they deserve to go up to the championship, do you think?
19:36No.
19:37No, they don't.
19:39Honestly, I mean, I know, they obviously, they get so much publicity.
19:45And they've spent a lot of money.
19:47I mean, on Saturday, well, on Friday, I think it was, just before the weekend,
19:51they bought Trey Rodriguez, who's got an England cap.
19:54And has played for Burnley and played, I think, Southampton as well, he's played for.
19:58And they bought Sam Smith as well, who's been scoring for fun for Reading this year.
20:04Yeah, and they started.
20:06And then they brought off the bench, they brought Jack Marriott, Elliot Lee, Stephen Fletcher.
20:12Stephen Fletcher, who's scored goals for fun for lots of teams and that.
20:15And you just look at that squad and you just think, wow.
20:17But the football they play, if I had to watch that football team every week,
20:21I'd be so frustrated.
20:23But the problem is, they know what to do to win a game.
20:27And that's exactly what they did.
20:28They used the dark arts, like Elliot Lee proved with his winner.
20:32But they defend and they defend very well.
20:34I'm not taking anything away how organised they are.
20:37But my God, it's hard to watch.
20:39It was just, yeah, dreadful.
20:41And on the other hand, you've got Crawley, who are brilliant to watch at times.
20:45But they're in the bottom four, Wrexham are third.
20:48So I suppose if you're a fan, all you want to do is see your team win.
20:52And that's what they're doing.
20:53But I wouldn't want to pay a season ticket to go and watch Wrexham every week
20:56if they're going to play like that.
20:58Yeah, well, here's hoping.
20:59But we move on to the score prediction.
21:02So we'll start with Brighton and Chelsea in the FA Cup,
21:05eight o'clock kick-off.
21:06Sam, you're going to be heading along to that one.
21:08What do you think for that one?
21:10Yeah, real difficult ones are called.
21:12Chelsea are not in the best of form themselves.
21:14And Brighton will be looking to bounce back after that real horror show at Forest.
21:22So I think I'm going to go with 2-1 Brighton.
21:26I'll be confident, 2-1 Brighton.
21:28Yeah, Mark, how do you see that one?
21:31I think in normal time it's going to be a high-scoring draw.
21:34I'm going to go 3-0 in normal time.
21:36And then it doesn't go to replays this round, I assume, or anything, does it?
21:41No, I don't think it does.
21:42So, yeah, I think Brighton are winning on penalties.
21:45Let's be positive in that sense.
21:47Yeah, it's such a hard one to call.
21:49You know, you don't know which teams either side is going to move out.
21:54I'm going to go with a 2-1 for Brighton, I think.
21:59Moving on, Bolton at home against Crawley, Mark.
22:04It's a tough old trip.
22:05But the new manager could play in Crawley's hands for Bolton.
22:08They might be a little bit trying to work out what the new manager wants.
22:11And Crawley have been playing well the last two games.
22:14They beat Mansfield away.
22:16Unlucky draw loss against Wrexham where they were absolutely brilliant.
22:21I'm going to go for a positive draw, a 1-1.
22:24Yeah, I was going to say.
22:25I was going to go for a 1-1 there as well.
22:27What do you think, Seth?
22:29Not as optimistic.
22:30Oh, no, Sam, don't do it.
22:31Don't do it.
22:32No, I think Bolton are obviously a huge club looking to get into the playoffs.
22:38Yeah.
22:39Just behind playoffs and goal difference at the moment.
22:41So I feel like they'll be really gunning for a big win and Crawley will struggle.
22:46But I think it'll be close, but a 2-1 defeat for Crawley, I think.
22:49JJ Okocha and Kevin Davis to score for Bolton, yeah.
22:55And Crawley versus Stevenage, Mark?
22:58Crawley are going to win that one.
23:00I mean, like I said, Robert, it really rates Stevenage.
23:02He thinks they're a really good side and should be higher and will be higher by the end of the season.
23:06But I'm going to go for a 2-0 Crawley win.
23:092-0 Crawley win.
23:10Yeah, I think Crawley definitely need a win there.
23:12I'm going to go for a 1-0.
23:13Sam, do you think they're going to sneak a victory there?
23:17Yeah, I was going to go for 1-0 as well, actually.
23:19I think it would be an edgy affair, but they'll nick a goal and get a 1-0 win.
23:24Nice one, nice one.
