00:32Hello and welcome to Latest TV News.
00:35I'm Sam Morton, reporter for Sussex World,
00:37and in this week's show we will be talking all things Brighton & Hove Albion.
00:41First, here are the top stories from across Sussex.
00:45A Sussex police officer has been dismissed without notice
00:48after they carried out acts and made comments of a sexual nature
00:51which were inappropriate while off duty.
00:54A misconduct hearing was held at Sussex Police Headquarters
00:57on February 10th and 11th in front of a panel
01:00chaired by Surrey Police Assistant Chief Constable Peter Gardiner
01:04who directed that the officer would remain anonymous.
01:08The hearing was told that the officer, while off duty,
01:11at a social event on April 23rd 2023,
01:14carried out acts of a sexual nature and made inappropriate comments
01:17towards colleagues and members of the public who were in attendance.
01:22Two men have been charged after a series of alcohol thefts
01:25in supermarkets across Sussex.
01:27On Saturday February 8th at around 6pm,
01:29a 39-year-old man and a 37-year-old man, both of no fixed address,
01:33were arrested at Asda and Hollingbury after security intercepted them
01:37as they left the premises.
01:39This followed CCTV identifying two men behaving suspiciously in the spirits aisle.
01:45Officers conducted enquiries in a nearby area and located a car
01:49containing approximately £2,100 of stolen alcohol and other items.
01:54Many of the bottles of spirits were found to still have security tags attached.
01:59A section of main road in Bexhill is closed to traffic for a year
02:02due to major works being carried out.
02:05Gas distribution company SGN started work in Coudon Drive on February 3rd.
02:10It said the works are expected to take up to a year
02:13with this section of road not opening until February 2026.
02:17Work on a new green space that links Worthing to the sea
02:20is due to start this spring.
02:22That's according to Worthing Borough Council which last year revealed
02:25final plans for a vibrant and inclusive new space called Montague Gardens.
02:29It was designed in collaboration with the community and local businesses.
02:33Residents and visitors will be greeted at the north end of the gardens
02:36with a standout Worthing Place sign, a green living wall
02:39and a performance sundeck area.
02:42Plans for the site also include the replacement of tarmac
02:45with attractive paving, 30 new trees, drought-resistant planting,
02:49a lawn area and sociable seating areas for residents
02:52to connect with each other and with nature.
02:55Finally, a Brighton Hove Albion shirt signed by all the players
02:58has been put up for auction by a Lansing restaurant
03:01to support fundraising for the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity.
03:05Enzo Fiore, owner of Italian restaurant O'Cornicello in Lansing
03:09launched the auction on Monday February 10th
03:12following the recent charity night at Lansing Empire Club
03:15organised by family and friends of Ruth Parry.
03:18Enzo said,
03:26Hello, I'm Sam Morton, reporter for Sussex World.
03:29I've just watched Brighton beat Chelsea 2-1 in the FA Cup.
03:32It was a brilliant performance from Brighton
03:35who bounced back superbly after that horror show
03:38at Nottingham Forest last weekend.
03:40You kind of feared the worst early on with Bart Verbruggen
03:42making a big error, letting Cole Palmer's tame effort
03:46from a tight angle somehow slipped underneath him.
03:50It was a real strange moment and a real awful start to the match
03:55and you feared the worst for Brighton from that point
03:57but they responded so well and were level within six minutes
04:00with Joel Veltman's brilliant cross headed in
04:03equally as brilliantly by Jorginho Rutter
04:06who was exceptional throughout the match
04:08and really did show his quality.
04:10He provided the assist for Karim Matoma
04:13who again brilliantly finished to seal a 2-1 win
04:18that was so much needed really.
04:20First home win since November
04:22and I feel like they can really kind of set a stall now
04:26for the rest of the season.
04:27They can really help them build and improve on that performance
04:31after obviously what was a dreadful result last weekend
04:34and Carlos Baleba back inside and what a difference he made
04:37and he was so missed at the City ground last weekend.
04:40So yeah, lots of reasons to be positive.
04:42I think Hertzel was rightly criticised for his tactics
04:46and the way he set the team up last weekend
04:48but he proved a lot of doubters wrong today
04:50and proved that those calls for him to lose his job
04:52were far too premature.
04:54So to see all of our play ratings and match reaction
04:56see sussexworld.co.uk
05:01I'm Henry Bryant and that's Darren Howard
05:04and we've just been to the pre-match press conferences.
05:07The Albion are trying to make it 2-2 against Chelsea
05:10this time in the Premier League
05:12and if they win this one they can get up to 8th position.
05:15There was an injury update from the press conference
05:17so Lewis Dunk, as we thought, he struggled in the first half
05:21in the FA Cup against Chelsea as well last week at the Amex.
05:25He went off with a rib injury, it was confirmed
05:28and I think the game's going to come a bit too soon
05:30for Lewis Dunk so he's still struggling.
05:33They're going to see if he can train today
05:35but it's not looking likely
05:37and I think Adam Webster will come in for Lewis Dunk as well.
05:41Pervis Estupinjan, he's still struggling with his muscular injury
05:44I think he's going to be out.
05:46Solly March is also going to be ruled out as well.
05:48He's actually back in training so it's more encouraging news
05:52but again I think it's just going to be a bit too soon for Solly March.
05:56On the positive side, Matt Swiffer, he could be an option as well.
06:00He hasn't played since he scored against West Ham
06:03when he must have had his best game for Brighton since joining.
06:06He's been out since but he's back in training
06:08and could be an option as well.
06:10Definitely, that's some hopeful news there.
06:13Still quite a few injuries though on the front for Brighton
06:16so it'll be an interesting one in that respect.
06:19Talking about an interesting atmosphere,
06:22we've seen it already with the FA Cup clash with Chelsea
06:25and Fabian Hasler thinks that this will be another tense atmosphere
06:29and he's aware of this rivalry.
06:31What was he saying about that sort of question?
06:33It came up in the press conference
06:37and yeah, Hasler likes it.
06:40He likes the tense atmosphere between the two teams.
06:43He thinks if there's a lively atmosphere amongst the fans
06:48it can help inspire the team, which it did last week.
06:53He's a big fan of it.
06:55There was a word of caution because some of the fans
06:59were targeting Kukurea and Robert Sanchez,
07:02which was all good fun, the former players that now play for Chelsea.
07:06But he did say that it could also work against them
07:10where it can raise their game a bit
07:13and inspire the likes of Kukurea and Sanchez
07:16to perform at perhaps a higher level.
07:19So there was that side of it as well.
07:22But on the whole, he likes the rivalry
07:24and I think it's going to be another good one on Valentine's Night,
07:27on Friday night, this Friday.
07:30There's certainly no love in the air between those two sides.
07:33Indeed.
07:34In terms of what we were saying at the start,
07:36Brighton can get into eighth position with this win.
07:39How important is that to get back amongst it
07:41in what could be the European positions for this season?
07:45I think that's got to be Brighton's target.
07:47They were going along quite nicely
07:49and then the injuries have really had an impact on them.
07:53I know Zela hasn't used that as an excuse,
07:56but when you look at the players that they've had missing
07:59for most of the season, it's been significant.
08:03And I think that loss at Nottingham Forest,
08:07that was a bit of a reset.
08:09I think in a way it was painful at the time,
08:11but Egan spoke about that today,
08:13of how it has actually, in a funny way,
08:16sort of galvanised the players and really focus
08:19and work on what they need to do.
08:21And I think maybe you could look back at the end of the season
08:23and say that could be a turning point
08:25and give them another push towards achieving their European aims.
08:30And three points against Chelsea would certainly help that.
08:33For sure.
08:34And it's all to play for.
08:36And for the latest news covering the Albion and more,

08:42Stay tuned for the Goldmouth Action Podcast.
09:12Welcome to another episode of the Goldmouth Action Podcast,
09:24where we take a look at all the latest goings-on
09:26at Brighton, Hove Albion and Crawley Town.
09:28I'm Matt Powell and this week I'm joined by Brighton writer
09:30Darren Howard, Crawley Town expert Mark Dunford
09:32and Sam Morton, who covers both the Seagulls and the Reds.
09:35Brighton advanced the fifth round of the FA Cup
09:37after a fabulous 2-1 home win over Chelsea on Saturday evening.
09:40We'll look back at that win over the Blues,
09:42plus we'll bring you the latest injury news
09:44as Brighton prepare to welcome Chelsea yet again to the Amex
09:46this time in the Premier League,
09:48as well as all the latest from Crawley Town.
09:50You can read all the stories we are talking about
09:52for videos and pictures on sussexworld.co.uk,

10:00You may also be watching on latest TV,
10:02so thank you very much for tuning in.
10:03But we will start at the Amex, where Albion bounce back
10:06from the heaviest league defeat in 57 years
10:08with a superb come-from-behind win
10:10against Chelsea in the FA Cup.
10:11Trailing to Barbara Bruggen's own goal,
10:13Jorginha routed a level for the Seagulls in the first half
10:15before Kaorou Matouma struck the winner in the second.
10:18Some of that result and the performance up for us, please, Darren.
10:21It looked like a completely different team
10:22and performance from last weekend at Forest.
10:25Yeah, that's right, Matt.
10:26There was a lot of talk before the match
10:28about increasing the intensity levels
10:31and really getting back to the basics
10:33of what made Brighton, you know,
10:36that got Brighton off to a good start under Herzéla.
10:39And they really, yeah, they showed what they can do
10:43when they, you know, stick to it
10:45and they all work as a team.
10:48And it was a team effort, really,
10:49that got them over the line against Chelsea.
10:53As you say, they went a goal down
10:55and I think a few fans in there are thinking,
10:58you know, are we going to crumble again?
11:01But no, they picked up and they went toe-to-toe with Chelsea
11:05and got their reward, really.
11:07Obviously, Jorginho Rutter got an excellent header
11:10from Joel Veltman's cross.
11:12And then Karim Matouma popped up
11:14with that excellent late winner,
11:17which was, it was a bit of debate about it,
11:19whether there was a handball in the build-up
11:22from Tarek Lamptey,
11:23but there was no VAR in operation for the FA Cup game.
11:27And the goal was allowed to stand
11:30and it was really a deserved win for Brighton in the end.
11:33And as you say, a real confidence boost
11:36following what happened at the city ground.
11:39So, yeah, really, really good,
11:41encouraging performance all round.
11:42Lots of players really got back to their,
11:45really got back to their top level
11:47that they're capable of.
11:48And yeah, I think the trick is now
11:51is to maintain that progress
11:54and keep it going for the rest of the season.
11:57But it was no doubt about it,
11:58it was a much needed victory.
12:00It was indeed.
12:01And you've mentioned it there, Deren.
12:02Chelsea felt Matouma's goal should have been disallowed
12:05as the ball appeared to strike
12:06Tarek Lamptey's arm in the build-up.
12:07Though there, as Deren mentioned,
12:09no video assistant referees in the FA Cup fourth round.
12:12What did you make of the decision, Sam?
12:13And how do you think the game flowed with that VAR?
12:15Was it a much better experience as a football watcher?
12:19I think it was.
12:20Yeah, I think it was a lot better experience.
12:22And I see, obviously, both sides of the argument with the VAR
12:26because you do see the value of it.
12:29I think when obviously mistakes are made
12:31and you obviously know that VAR would have
12:34stopped that goal from happening
12:36or that penalty from being given.
12:37So you see the value of it.
12:39But in terms of the flow of the game,
12:41it was a lot better.
12:43I think it was a lot better from viewing experience
12:45that you just know that once a goal has been scored,
12:48you can pretty much show that you can obviously,
12:51obviously the fans can celebrate it really.
12:53So that's always a good thing.
12:55I think it does take the enjoyment out of it a little bit
12:57when you're waiting ages for a decision to be made.
13:01We saw it, obviously, at the Everton-Liverpool game
13:03where that last-minute equaliser was obviously
13:06absolute bedlam, all the fans on the pitch.
13:08And it might have been disallowed.
13:10It was so close to being disallowed.
13:11You just think how crazy that would have been
13:14and what a kind of a downer that would have been
13:17on the whole thing.
13:19So you can definitely see the benefit of not having VAR,
13:22but then mistakes are made.
13:24I know you've mentioned obviously there with Matoma
13:26and I think he probably was a bit fortunate
13:29for his goal to stand.
13:31I think it was probably Lamptey, the one I would say,
13:34was the fortunate bit because the way that it kind of
13:36bounced up and hit his arm.
13:38If VAR was there, it would have ruled it out,
13:40I would imagine.
13:42But I think Matoma, he did avoid handballing it
13:44with his control and obviously put it away brilliantly
13:48to seal the win.
13:50But I do think Lamptey was fortunate, actually,
13:52that the handball wasn't noticed.
13:54But yeah, from a viewer perspective,
13:56really glad that it wasn't.
13:58And obviously Brighton got the win.
14:00Absolutely.
14:01Former Albion players Mark Kukerea, Robert Sanchez
14:04and Moises Caicedo all featured for Chelsea
14:06in the cup defeat at the Amex.
14:08What kind of reception did the trio get there?
14:10And I'm assuming they were welcomed back with open arms
14:12by the Albion faithful.
14:14Yeah, it was a really good atmosphere.
14:16We were just talking about it in the press conference
14:19ahead of Friday's match.
14:22And it just adds another layer to it, doesn't it?
14:25There's been a bit of a rivalry between
14:27Chelsea and Brighton, which has been built up
14:29obviously with the transfers that have
14:31taken place recently.
14:33As you mentioned, Caicedo, Sanchez, Kukerea
14:35and then the former manager Graham Potter
14:38all moved to Stamford Bridge.
14:40And that all just adds to the occasion.
14:43And Herzegovic was asked about it
14:45and he loves it.
14:47He likes the tension in the crowd and the atmosphere
14:50and he thinks the players can thrive off that,
14:53which they did last time out.
14:57He did temper that, however, and said that
14:59it can also serve to go the other way.
15:02Sometimes they have to be careful of that,
15:04that it could lift the likes of Kukerea
15:06and lift the likes of Sanchez or if he plays.
15:09And Caicedo to perform at a higher level
15:12to say, you know, I'll show you.
15:15So there's a balance between the two.
15:19But yeah, it is good fun.
15:22It does create for a good atmosphere.
15:24And when you play each other twice in quick succession,
15:27once in the FA Cup and once in the league,
15:29both at the Amex as well, it gives that edge.
15:32You know, other players think, oh God,
15:34I don't really want to go back and face,
15:36you know, get all that grief again.
15:39But it all sort of builds up
15:42and it's going to be another good occasion at Brighton.
15:45And the challenge is now,
15:47is whether they can reproduce that type of form
15:50and that type of intensity and the display
15:53to get three points in the Premier League.
15:55Because that's, it's obviously great
15:57that they progressed in the FA Cup.
15:58They'll play Newcastle in the next round,
16:00in the fifth round, where there will be VAR
16:03for the fifth round.
16:05But then it's also about building up
16:07in the Premier League again
16:08and getting that momentum going again
16:10and see if they can push for those European places
16:13once again.
16:14And three points against Chelsea this weekend will be key.
16:18But yeah, the Kukerea, Caicedo and Sanchez
16:21is a nice subplot and a sideshow in amongst that.
16:26Absolutely. And Darren's mentioned it there, Sam.
16:28The draw for the fifth round sees Albion make the trip
16:30to Carabao Cup finalist Newcastle United.
16:33All fifth round games were played
16:34over the first weekend of March.
16:36What do you make of the draw?
16:37I've seen a few comments on social media
16:39where it seems that neither side are particularly pleased
16:41with that draw.
16:42It's a tough one for both sides, I think, isn't it?
16:44Yeah, it's a nightmare draw, really,
16:47especially for Brighton.
16:48I think Newcastle will at least be pleased
16:50they're at home.
16:51But they obviously will be probably disappointed
16:53they didn't get a lower league side
16:55to make it a little bit more comfortable.
16:57But even that's not a given, as we've seen,
16:59obviously Liverpool being knocked out
17:02after that short result.
17:03And Man City were pushed really close as well.
17:07So it's definitely not a given when you're drawn
17:09against these lower teams.
17:10And Plymouth, I imagine, will probably think
17:12they have a chance against Man City
17:14after knocking Liverpool out.
17:16Obviously, when you look at the two teams
17:18for this season.
17:19But in terms of Brighton going to Newcastle,
17:22it's a bit of a nightmare, I think,
17:24because Newcastle are obviously a really strong team.
17:26Obviously, that's the Carabao Cup final as well.
17:29So you can show that they really are dangerous
17:32in these cup competitions.
17:34I think, yeah, obviously going all that way
17:38to Newcastle is a real difficult challenge
17:40for anyone.
17:41And Brighton did actually manage to get
17:43a win away there, obviously in October.
17:45A 1-0 win for Danny Welbeck, getting the goal.
17:48But it would be difficult to re-replicate that,
17:50I think.
17:51I think, obviously, it's just such a tough place to go.
17:53The atmosphere is always absolutely rocking.
17:54It's a dangerous part.
17:56And I imagine Brighton would have wanted to go
17:58pretty much anywhere else, I imagine.
18:00So a difficult one.
18:01A difficult one to call.
18:03But Brighton definitely are in with a chance.
18:05Obviously, we'd hope that Newcastle would rest players
18:07and potentially try to get into those Champions League spots
18:09still as well.
18:10And obviously, in the Carabao Cup as well.
18:12So maybe they might rest players for this one,
18:14in which case there might be a bit of a glimmer of hope
18:16of getting another really good result there.
18:18But a really tough one.
18:19And I imagine the Brighton camp are not too pleased
18:22with this draw.
18:23No, absolutely.
18:24As we've also mentioned, Brighton and Chelsea
18:26meet again at the Amex on Friday evening,
18:28the Premier League.
18:29Where the Blues are currently nine points and six places
18:32above their cup conquerors.
18:34How do you see this one going, Deren?
18:36Do you expect to see kind of a repeat performance
18:38from last weekend?
18:39And what's the latest injury news from the Albion camp?
18:42Yeah, I think it's going to be another good occasion.
18:46But there are a few injuries.
18:48And we were just speaking about Lewis Dunk
18:51in the press conference.
18:53And he's very doubtful at the moment.
18:55He's going to see if he can train today.
18:57He played again in the first half against Chelsea
18:59in the FA Cup and then went off at halftime
19:02with a rib injury.
19:04Apparently he was due to have a scan this week
19:07and then we'll be sort of the extent of the damage
19:10will be assessed.
19:11But I think the game will arrive too soon.
19:14It's looking like Adam Webster will be,
19:16who came on for him in the second half against
19:18in the FA Cup.
19:19It's looking like he will be starting ahead
19:22of Lewis Dunk.
19:23But that hasn't been confirmed yet.
19:25But that's probably likely to happen.
19:28Pervis Estupinjan, he's still struggling
19:31with his muscular issue.
19:32And I think Tarek Lamptey, who was man of the match
19:34against Chelsea, playing in that unfamiliar
19:37sort of left-back role.
19:39He's going to fill in for Estupinjan.
19:42Ferdi Kadioglu, he's still a long way away,
19:44unfortunately.
19:45So he hasn't been seen since he scored
19:48against Liverpool at Anfield.
19:51And he's still struggling with his toe injury.
19:53So I don't think you're going to see him
19:55any time soon.
19:56Solih March, I think he's going to be,
19:58he's back training following his muscular problem.
20:01But the game's going to arrive a bit too soon
20:03for him as well.
20:06But he is progressing.
20:07And the other one of note is Matt Swiffer.
20:11He hasn't played since West Ham,
20:13but he's back in training and could be in contention
20:16to play in one of the midfield spots
20:19for this weekend.
20:22Excellent stuff.
20:23Well, best of luck to Brighton on Friday.
