00:32Hello and welcome to Latest TV News.
00:35I'm Sam Morton, reporter for Sussex World,
00:37and in this week's show we'll be looking ahead to Brighton's trip to Newcastle.
00:41We'll also be giving our thoughts on England's new German manager, Thomas Tuchel.
00:46First, here are the top stories from across East Sussex.
00:49A passenger was assaulted during a disturbance on board a bus in Hove, police have said.
00:54Police are appealing for witnesses and information following the incident.
00:58The incident happened on board a No. 1 bus travelling eastbound in Church Road
01:02at 9.15am on Wednesday, October 9th.
01:06A passenger on board was reportedly assaulted by a suspect,
01:09and passengers left the bus, which was at a stop between Sackfield Road and Connaught Road junctions.
01:14Police said the suspect was a man in his 40s, 5ft 5in, wearing a green T-shirt, grey tracksuit bottoms and a black baseball cap.
01:22The spokesperson added, officers wanted to speak with passengers on board,
01:25in particular with one passenger who was reportedly assaulted and left the area.
01:30Anyone with information can report it to the police online or via 101 quoting Serial 380 of 9 October.
01:37A driver who was found with a sawn-off shotgun, knives and a variety of other weapons
01:42after being stopped by police in Brighton, has been sentenced to five years in prison.
01:46Osiris Fleming-Ray was driving a black Honda Civic with false registration plates on the A23 southbound
01:53when he was stopped by officers from the Tactical Firearms Unit, Roads Policing Unit and Specialist Enforcement Units.
01:59Officers believe the vehicle may have been stolen.
02:02Once the weapons were recovered, Fleming-Ray, aged 27, of Nelson Road, Leyton Bazaar, Bedfordshire,
02:07was arrested and taken into custody and was later charged following an investigation by the Brighton CID.
02:13Savills has announced that two adjoining mixed-wildland farms covering 378 acres are on the market.
02:20The real estate company said Greenhurst and Foxhill Farms in Highhurstwood, Uckfield,
02:25currently have a guide price of £7m for the whole plot or are available in 10 lots.
02:31Chris Spurforth of Savills Rural Agency Team in the south-east said,
02:35having been in the ownership of the same family for three generations,
02:38the sale of Greenhurst and Foxhill Farms presents a rare opportunity for an incoming buyer in a beautiful yet accessible part of East Sussex.
02:46East Sussex County Council will look further into relocating from its Lewis headquarters, a senior councillor has decided.
02:52On Tuesday, October 15, Councillor Nick Bennett, Lead Member for Resources and Climate Change,
02:58considered a report setting out potential options for the future of the authority's County Hall campus in St Anne's Crescent.
03:05The report set out six potential options for the council to pursue,
03:09ranging from remaining at County Hall indefinitely to building a new headquarters
03:13as part of a wider, possibly residential, redevelopment of the site.
03:17Engineering work that will close the Hastings to Ashford line for more than three weeks gets underway on Saturday.
03:23Work gets underway to repair the ore tunnel on Saturday, October 19, and the line will remain closed until Sunday, November 3.
03:30The work hopes to improve drainage and prevent water seeping through the tunnel walls, preventing future damage to the railway equipment inside it.
03:38Sections of brickwork will also be repaired, with parts of the tunnel lined with sprayed concrete and 700 yards of track replaced.
03:46Network Rail says the work will provide more reliable journeys for passengers and be another step towards reducing journey times in the future.
03:53Stay tuned for the Goalmouth Action Podcast.
04:05Welcome to another episode of the Goalmouth Action Podcast, where we take a look at the latest goings-on at Brighton & Hove Albion and Crawley Town.
04:12I'm Mark Dunford and I'm joined by Brighton writer Darren Howard and Brighton writers Sam Morton and Henry Bryan, the former who covers both Albion and the Reds.
04:20Brighton, who are sixth in the Premier League, pause for an international break but are now busy preparing for Saturday's trip to Newcastle.
04:26We take a look at the latest team news and also Yankuba Minte, who will no doubt be determined to shine against his former club.
04:34Plus we look at a crazy game at the Broadfield Stadium as Crawley Town lost an eight-goal thriller to Shrewsbury Town.
04:40You can read all the stories we are talking about with the videos and pictures online at sussexworld.co.uk forward slash sport.
04:47And you can check out other great videos on shotstv.com and Freeview channel 262.
04:52You may also be watching on latest TV. Thank you for tuning in.
04:56So what's the latest with Brighton's walking wounded ahead of Newcastle? Darren, any news on John Paul Van Hecker or Jael Pedro?
05:04Yeah, they've still got a few a few injury issues going into going into this one.
05:09Hopefully the international break would have cleared some of those up.
05:12And there was good news for John Paul Van Hecker, as you mentioned.
05:18He was expected to be out for around about six weeks with this with this groin issue that he picked up during the during the second half of the 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest.
05:29But he looks as though he's ahead of schedule.
05:31He was pictured, excuse me, he was pictured training this week at the Brighton Lansing training ground.
05:39And that was a that was a welcome surprise for many people who thought he would be out for, you know, the next run of matches after the international break.
05:47So whether he's going to be fit to play against Newcastle is a big question for Brighton fans who who they've already got Adam Webster out who's looking dodgy with a thigh injury still.
06:00So if Van Hecker can come back in time for the Newcastle game, that would be a huge boost for Brighton fans.
06:06But we're going to get an update from Hersella tomorrow morning once all the players have had a chance to assess them once they come back from their international break.
06:15But it's encouraging signs for Van Hecker, but we'll know more first thing tomorrow morning.
06:21Jael Pedro, my hunch is that he's going to be unavailable.
06:25I think he's still struggling with the foot injury that he picked up against, also against Nottingham Forest as well.
06:32So so that's a blow for Brighton.
06:34But encouragingly, Jorginho Rutter, he's been he's been playing well for Brighton in Pedro's absence.
06:41So hopefully that will continue for him.
06:44There was a bit of a concern as well for Carlos Bolivar.
06:47He had a bit of a problem whilst on international duty with with Cameroon.
06:52So we're keeping an eye on on that one as well.
06:55Matthew O'Reilly, he's still out as well.
06:58But there could be returns for James Milner, Simon Odinga and also Soli March could be included in the squad for the for the first time for 12 months.
07:08He was close to the Tottenham squad, but he was just it just came too soon.
07:14But yeah, we'll be keeping an eye on all the all the injury news ahead of ahead of Newcastle on Sussex as well.
07:20Yeah, it'd be good to see Soli March back.
07:23So Newcastle and Brighton have almost identical records so far.
07:27Both have won three, drawn three and lost one from their first seven games.
07:31How do you see this playing out, Henry? And who are the danger men for Newcastle, do you think?
07:36Well, I think that Alexander Isak, if he's fit for this one, he suffered a foot injury in a 2-1 win against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
07:46And also Anthony Gordon, we've got to watch out for.
07:49He scored twice this season for Newcastle.
07:51And even though they haven't had the best start, Newcastle, they are unbeaten in their last three Premier League home games against Brighton.
08:00Brighton have lost just two of their 14 Premier League meetings with Newcastle.
08:06And their last game, as we saw with Newcastle, was a 0-0 draw away to Everton, which was quite a tasty game.
08:13But I think if Brighton are able to start early, if we can shore up the defence,
08:18if Rutter is still firing on all cylinders and has a game similar to that that we saw that he had against Tottenham when we played at home to them and got that 3-2 victory,
08:30then I think that this could be a really good game for Brighton.
08:34I do think that our confidence is up, especially after that win and the way we were able to show resilience as a team.
08:41So I think that this will be a really interesting spectacle and fixture for Albion fans to watch out for.
08:47And I can see Brighton giving Newcastle a really good game.
08:51Yeah. Yeah. And Jankuba Minter joined from Newcastle during the summer for £30m.
08:56Have you assessed his season so far, Henry? How have you assessed his season so far? Sorry.
09:02And this will be his first appearance at St James' Park as he never actually played for the Magpies, didn't he?
09:07Exactly that. And when we signed him this summer for around £30m from Feyenoord, he was known as a fan's favourite from Feyenoord fans.
09:18And he scored 10 goals and provided six assists in 27 league appearances.
09:24I think Brighton fans initially saw him in that pre-season, saw that burst of pace that he has.
09:30He performed really well and he's a very exciting prospect.
09:34In the Premier League, however, in his first few games and appearances, we have seen that he lacks a bit of definition in the final third.
09:43That last pass sometimes is a little bit astray.
09:46And that's why Dhingra has been picked over him a couple of times in these last few games.
09:51But I do think that he's a really good player at 20 years old.
09:55He's just turned 20 recently. He's got bags of potential.
09:59And I think that he'll have a little bit of confidence with the fact that he got a goal for us.
10:05His first Premier League goal in that 3-2 win against Tottenham.
10:09And that was the first goal that sort of sparked everything.
10:12Played a really solid performance there and he came off in the 87th minute.
10:16So he had basically the full 90 there.
10:18And I can imagine him doing well and wanting to prove himself as well to Newcastle.
10:24But actually they missed out on a real gem there because he looks like a player that is for the future.
10:30One of those ones where in a few seasons' time we'll be saying he's going to go to this team or this team in Europe,
10:36this team in the top six in the Premier League for hundreds of millions of pounds.
10:41Yet again, I think Brighton have done really well here.
10:44Are you a fan of him, Sam Minter?
10:48Yeah, I think there's some good signs from Minter actually.
10:51He started obviously in pre-season on fire.
10:54Definitely the man to really state his claims, that kind of most exciting signing and the one that was really having an impact.
11:01And one thing I've really liked about him is his kind of pressing from the front.
11:04He's really good at winning the ball back high up the field,
11:07which Herzog was obviously really keen on kind of installing in his players to make sure they press from the front
11:13and obviously can try and make a difference in that area of the pitch defensively.
11:18And he's continued that in the league. He's very good at pressing and trying to win the ball back.
11:23But there is still a raw element to him that I think is going to be obvious as a very young player
11:29that's still going to learn his trade in the Premier League.
11:31And there's still lots of room for improvement.
11:33And it does feel like sometimes when he gets the ball, he doesn't really know what he's going to do,
11:37which can be a good thing. The defenders obviously can't predict it.
11:41But other times I think it does look like it's a little bit scattergun with kind of his approach.
11:46But I feel like as he irons out his game, gets used to Premier League football and the style and everything like that,
11:51I think he's all set to be a really top-quality player.
11:54Yeah. And what with you, Sam, there was also an injury scare for Carlos Boliva during the international break.
11:59How important has he been for Fabian Herzog this term?
12:02I imagine he's the last player Brighton would want to be missing, wouldn't he, at this point?
12:06Exactly. He's been probably the star performer from the season, actually, for Brighton.
12:12He's been exceptional in every game that I've seen.
12:16There's been a couple of hairy moments where he's given away a penalty or two.
12:20So maybe a little bit of improvement there.
12:22I love the way you brush that off. He's just given away a penalty or two.
12:25Yeah. Yeah. I think there's been a couple of moments where he's probably not gone in for the right tackle,
12:30kind of the right time, that kind of thing.
12:32But I think on the ball and his confidence that he's now playing with has been brilliant
12:36because it was quite a slow start to life at Brighton for Boliva.
12:41He was in and out of the team and wasn't getting that run of games he perhaps would have liked to really settle down.
12:47But he's really getting that now and he's starting to really show his class.
12:50We've seen him score an absolute screamer this season against Wolves in the Carabao Cup.
12:55And so it was also one of the best celebrations I've seen from a Brighton player in recent years as well.
13:01Yeah, he's been brilliant.
13:02And it was a real kind of concern to see that he was stretched off in that game for Cameroon.
13:07But it does seem like it was only a minor injury, thankfully.
13:10I don't think he featured in the game against Kenya.
13:15So potentially, he might be missing for the Newcastle game if he's not quite fit for that.
13:21But it doesn't seem as serious as first feared when obviously all the pictures came out of him on a stretcher.
13:26Obviously fans feared the worst because for him to be out would be a huge blow,
13:30particularly after losing Billy Gilmore in the summer.
13:33For Boliva to have come in and he's been a real vital cog in the team and it's vital that he stays fit.
13:39Yeah, absolutely.
13:40And we've got former Brighton manager Graham Potter had been linked to the England role.
13:44But now that's gone to Thomas Tuchel.
13:46What do we make of that appointment and where does that leave Potter, Darren?
13:50Yeah, yeah.
13:51It's an interesting one, isn't it?
13:52Yeah, Potter was rumoured to be in the frame for the England role.
13:57Whether we actually had any discussions with the FA or not, we don't know for sure.
14:04But he has been linked along with Eddie Howe,
14:07who's obviously the Newcastle manager who Brighton will play as well this weekend.
14:11So I imagine some Newcastle fans would be quite relieved that Eddie Howe is staying at Newcastle as well.
14:19But yeah, for Potter, where that quite leaves his career now, he's been doing the rounds recently.
14:24He's been on Monday Night Football.
14:26He's been on Match of the Day 2 trying to...
14:28Bit of a charisma vacuum, isn't he?
14:30Yeah.
14:32He's been trying to sort of boost his profile again.
14:35Say, look, I'm still here, type thing, I think.
14:38But it's been about 18 months now since he's left Chelsea.
14:43He's been out of work.
14:44How long was that, blimey?
14:45Yeah.
14:46Yeah, since he came.
14:48Obviously, we've had Deserby at Brighton since then as well.
14:53And now Herzéla.
14:54So yeah, Potter's been out for quite some time.
14:58And you look at where he can go from here.
15:00He has been linked with some big jobs, like the Ajax job.
15:04He's also linked with a Nice job in France.
15:07He's been linked with a Man United role as well, which also Thomas Tuchel had been as well with the Ineos owners.
15:14And apparently he does...
15:15So Jim Ratcliffe is a fan of Potter.
15:18But whether that is a logical next step for him, if Ten Hag is to go, I don't know.
15:24I personally can't see that one at the moment.
15:27Potter at Man United.
15:28But you never know.
15:29And then you look lower down the table, the managers that are under pressure.
15:33You look at Gary O'Neill at Wolves, Russell Martin at Southampton.
15:38That feels about his level, doesn't it?
15:40I think.
15:41Yeah, it would be...
15:42I think a big team, although Man United are sort of at a lower level at the moment, that just does seem...
15:50You know, whether they could attract someone else other than Potter, I'm not too sure.
15:55So it'll be interesting to see where Potter goes.
15:58But as far as Tuchel's concerned, 18-month contract with the England job.
16:04And it just seems clear, doesn't it?
16:06It's a change of direction from the FA that they...
16:09It's just with the World Cup in mind, isn't it?
16:11They've come here, come for 18 months, win us that World Cup.
16:14That is his clear remit.
16:16When Southgate fell, you know, just short on a few occasions as well.
16:21And they just think Tuchel could be that man to give them that extra bit of bite,
16:26extra bit of ruthlessness to really go on and win a tournament with this, you know,
16:31really talented, proper players that England have.
16:34So, yeah, interesting appointment.
16:37Some have criticised it, saying that it sort of damages the pathway for English managers to become the England manager.
16:44They should be better, shouldn't they?
16:48Yeah, well, that's the other argument, isn't it?
16:50It's slim pickings, isn't it?
16:51If you look at the English managers that you think who could potentially be there,
16:55you know, obviously Potter was in the frame, but he really struggled at Chelsea.
17:00Eddie Howe, he would have been my pick, but he's at Newcastle, obviously.
17:04But, yeah, so we'll see what Tuchel brings.
17:08But his remit is, yeah, just win us that World Cup, basically.
17:11Yeah, it's going to be an interesting one.
17:13Mark, it was a crazy day at the Broadfield Stadium.
17:17Talk us through what happened in their previous match.
17:21Oh, it was crazy.
17:22They played Shrewsbury Town.
17:23Shrewsbury were below them before the day started.
17:26They were both in the relegation zone.
17:28And he picked a very attacking-looking side, and they started well, Crawley.
17:36But then John Marquess scored for Shrewsbury, and he scored from a similar position than everybody scored against Crawley this year.
17:44Some unmarked in the box, just had a free shot, scored.
17:48Not a lot true Conor Truman could have done in goal.
17:51But Crawley fought back, and Will Swan got his first goal for the club.
17:55And it looked to sort of settle down a bit from there, and Crawley were well on top and playing well.
18:00Got to half-time, won all.
18:02Second half just went absolutely bonkers.
18:05If anyone's seen the film The Substance, it was as bonkers as the last half hour of that.
18:10First of all, Josh Flint was sent off.
18:13He got booked, and then a couple of minutes later, he just – it was a really soft foul.
18:19But the winger got the better of him, outpaced him, but he just pulled him down.
18:24And it was really soft.
18:25The player went down very easy, but it was very naive of him, and the referee had no option but to send him off.
18:31But then Crawley scored.
18:32It was like, oh, great.
18:33Junior Quinter Equiterna scored.
18:35Really good goal.
18:37Harry Forster dinked it to the back post, and he was there as a half-volley home.
18:40And it looked like, oh, brilliant.
18:42Crawley are going to get on top and now just settle back.
18:45Then we're going to get on to the substitutions in a bit.
18:48But then Rob Elliott made some changes, and then it just literally fell apart for Crawley.
18:54Nisala scored from a corner just after Elliott made free changes, just before the corner was made.
19:04And then somebody gave away a penalty.
19:06I can't remember who it was that gave away the penalty.
19:08Sorry.
19:09John Marquis scored from the spot.
19:11And then Lloyd, the striker for Shrewsbury, scored two goals in the 86th and 90th minute.
19:17And it just suddenly – they were 5-2 down.
19:20And it was just like, I don't quite know how that happened.
19:22I mean, Crawley fans will tell you exactly how it happened.
19:25But it was just absolutely bonkers, and they did look all over the place defensively towards the end of the game.
19:32Jeremy Kelly got a consolation in the end with a really good free kick.
19:36But just utter madness it was, that second half.
19:39I wasn't actually at the game, but I watched a live stream of it, and it was just – yeah.
19:44There were some worrying signs defensively, definitely.
19:48Yeah, and by the looks of it, fans didn't react well to the defeat,
19:52but specifically to some of Rob Elliott's decisions in the second half, Mark.
19:57What were their issues with the new manager?
20:00Yeah, well, it was the substitutions, as I sort of alluded to then.
20:03It was – when they went 2-1 up, 10 men down, you think, right, brilliant.
20:07Take off – because they had Roshan Hepburn-Murphy, Junior Quaterna, and Will Swan all on the pitch.
20:14All very attack-minded players.
20:16And you would have thought, maybe take Will Swan off, maybe Hepburn-Murphy.
20:20But he took Ronan Darcy off, and Junior Quaterna.
20:23And Ronan Darcy's been arguably Crawley's best player this year.
20:27And he sort of runs the show, so influential going forward and that.
20:31But he took him off and, yeah, kept Hepburn-Murphy and Swan, the two most attacking players, on the pitch.
20:37And you think – he's always said he wants to attack, wants to be aggressive, play exciting football.
20:43But it just seemed a little bit – and I sort of went, hmm, is that the right move?
20:48Okay, trust in Rob Elliott kind of thing, like we used to trust in Scott Lindsay.
20:52And it didn't quite work out.
20:54And the biggest one was making free changes when they were just about to defend a corner.
20:58And everyone pointed out on all social media, that's a no-no.
21:02When you're defending a corner, defending a free kick in a dangerous area, you don't make changes at that point.
21:08And he made free changes, and they conceded from that corner.
21:11And then that's where it all sort of went wrong from.
21:14You can look at Josh Flint being a bit silly, but Rob Elliott defended him afterwards and said,
21:19yes, he was at mistake, but he hopes he learns from it.
21:23But it just seemed like the substitutions weren't the best option for Elliott to make.
21:30So, yeah, it'll be interesting.
21:32I'm going to talk to him about it tomorrow.
21:33We've got a press conference tomorrow.
21:34I'm going to ask him about how he reflects on his decisions and that.
21:38Obviously, they analyse games, give feedback to the players.
21:42I wonder if he looks back at himself and thinks, oh, maybe they were the wrong decisions.
21:46He might stick to his guns and say, that's what I thought the right thing was to do.
21:50As in the pudding.
21:52Yeah.
