00:33 Hello, and welcome to Latest TV News.
00:35 I'm Sam Wilson, reporter for Sussex World,
00:37 and I'll be bringing you the top stories from across the county.
00:40 Police were involved as a group of people
00:42 refused to pay a 400-pound bill at award-winning, family-run
00:46 Italian restaurant La Bell Vista at Grand Parade in St.
00:49 Leonard's.
00:51 Restaurant owner Aldo Esposito said
00:53 a group ordered more than 400 pound of food and drink
00:56 and then refused to pay.
00:57 He said they falsely claimed they had found plastic
00:59 in their food.
01:01 He added, the police came and negotiated with them,
01:03 and they managed to recover 60 pound for us.
01:06 He also issued a warning to other local businesses
01:08 and said, this is the third time we've
01:10 been hit by groups like this in the last couple of months,
01:12 so please be aware.
01:15 A man suffered life-threatening injuries
01:17 following a collision near Bexhill at the weekend.
01:20 Sussex Police said the incident took place on Saturday,
01:22 January 13 in Linfield at around 11.40 AM,
01:26 which involved a silver Peugeot hitting a tree.
01:29 A police spokesperson said the driver, a 20-year-old man,
01:32 was the sole person involved in the collision.
01:35 He was airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries
01:37 where he remains.
01:39 Officers are now appealing for witnesses
01:40 to establish the cause of the incident.
01:43 If you have any information, dash cam footage,
01:45 or witnessed a collision, you are
01:46 urged to contact collision.appeal@sussex.police.uk,
01:51 quoting Operation Kempton.
01:52 The UK Health Security Agency has upgraded its cold health
01:56 alerts for Sussex.
01:57 As of midday on Sunday, the yellow cold health alerts
02:01 issued by the UK Health Security Agency and the Met Office
02:04 have been upgraded across all regions of England.
02:07 An amber alert is now in place for the whole of England
02:09 until midday on Friday.
02:13 An amber alert means that cold weather impacts
02:15 are likely to be felt across the whole health service
02:18 for an extended period of time, with the potential
02:20 for the whole population to be at risk,
02:22 and where other sectors may also start
02:24 to observe impacts, indicating a coordinated response is
02:27 required.
02:28 Dr. Augustino Souza, head of extreme events and health
02:32 protection at the UK HSA, said, "The temperatures
02:35 we will see leading into the week ahead
02:37 can rapidly have a serious impact on the health of those
02:40 over the age of 65 and those with pre-existing health
02:43 conditions, as it increases the risk of heart attacks, strokes,
02:46 and chest infections.
02:47 It is therefore vital to check in on friends, family,
02:50 and neighbours to ensure they are well-prepared for the cold
02:52 weather."
02:53 A trust responsible for multiple hospitals in Sussex
02:55 has stood down the critical incident that
02:57 was announced on Sunday following
02:59 IT and phone problems.
03:01 The Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton
03:03 and the Princess Royal Hospital in Hayward Heath
03:05 were significantly affected, the university hospital's Sussex
03:08 NHS Foundation Trust said in a statement on a Sunday evening.
03:12 St. Richard's Hospital in Chichester and Worthing
03:14 Hospital were also affected to a lesser degree
03:17 and were under considerable pressure as a result.
03:20 The trust said at 11.30 PM that progress
03:23 had been made in restoring IT systems.
03:26 In a further update at 9 AM on Monday,
03:28 a spokesperson for the trust said
03:29 "the trust is no longer in a critical incident
03:31 as good progress was made overnight
03:33 in restoring IT systems.
03:35 Anyone with a planned appointment
03:37 should attend as normal unless they
03:38 are contacted by our staff."
03:40 Our emergency departments are receiving patients as normal,
03:43 but please be aware that all teams
03:44 are under additional pressure after the disruption
03:46 over the weekend.
03:48 If your health problem is not an emergency or life-threatening,
03:51 please visit 111.nhs.uk or call 111 for help or advice.
03:57 Finally, a new hotel was expected
03:58 to open in East Sussex this summer
04:00 following a multi-million pound investment.
04:02 The newly launched Everleigh Hotels Collection
04:05 has introduced its first stunning new hotel,
04:07 The White Horses in Rottingdean.
04:09 Online bookings are now open for 2024,
04:12 with balcony rooms featuring uninterrupted sea views,
04:15 a spokesperson for the hotel said.
04:17 Opening in early summer 2024 and situated
04:20 on the East Sussex coastline, a stone's throw from Brighton,
04:23 The White Horses is the new premium hotel
04:25 set to transform the Rottingdean seafront
04:27 with beautifully appointed accommodation and dining
04:30 filled with local influences.
04:32 This first property from the Everleigh Hotels Collection
04:34 will have 32 bedrooms and 290 covers
04:37 and will open to the public later this year.
04:40 Stay tuned for this week's Goldmouth Action Podcast,
04:43 where we discuss all things Brighton & Hove Albion
04:45 and sports in Sussex.
04:47 (upbeat music)
04:50 Welcome to another episode of Goldmouth Action Podcast,
05:07 where we take a look at all the latest goings on
05:09 Brighton & Hove Albion, Crawley Town
05:11 and all of the sports across Sussex.
05:14 I'm Darren Howard, and this week I'm joined
05:15 by Sussex reporters, Sam Morton and Henry Bryant,
05:19 who cover all things Brighton & Hove Albion
05:21 as well as Crawley Town.
05:23 The Seagulls are enjoying a 20-day break from action.
05:26 Their extended break has included a week
05:28 of warm weather training in Dubai,
05:30 and they are next in action at home
05:31 against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday,
05:33 January the 22nd at the Amex Stadium.
05:37 Behind the scenes, Albion are edging closer
05:39 to making their first signing of the transfer window,
05:42 and meanwhile, Crawley Town, they suffered
05:44 a disappointing 1-0 home defeat against Salford City.
05:48 Off the pitch, 21-year-old midfielder Kame Sawyer
05:51 has also been recalled by West Ham.
05:54 You can read all of the stories we are talking about
05:56 with videos and pictures online
05:58 at sussexworld.co.uk/sport,
06:01 and you can check out other great videos
06:03 on shotstv.com and Freeview channel 276.
06:07 You may also be watching on latest TV,
06:10 so thank you very much for tuning in.
06:12 As mentioned, Albion are enjoying an extended break.
06:16 And just how beneficial will that be, Sam,
06:18 do you think, to the team?
06:20 Yeah, massively beneficial, Darren, really.
06:22 I think obviously the one thing that's been a problem
06:24 for Brighton this season is trying to get to grips
06:26 with the number of games they've had to play.
06:29 And they've obviously made a number of changes.
06:31 And I think we've seen different players
06:35 come in quite frequently.
06:36 I suppose it's made it quite difficult
06:37 to get the playing style as fluid
06:40 and as brilliant as it was last season, really.
06:44 And I think they've done exceptionally well
06:46 in the circumstances and have had to deal
06:47 with lots of injuries, especially this season.
06:50 So having this extended break to recharge the batteries,
06:53 get some players back from injury,
06:55 I hope that we do see some of those players
06:58 that have been out for a long time nearing,
07:00 basically, hopefully they are nearer to playing again.
07:02 So this definitely gives those players a chance
07:05 to get back into action.
07:07 And the players that have been playing week in, week out
07:09 to have a rest, which is so important
07:11 as we go into the second half of the season.
07:14 - Yeah, it's going to be a big second half.
07:16 And next up is a home match against Wolves
07:18 on Monday the 22nd.
07:21 What do you think about that one, Henry?
07:22 What kind of game are you expecting?
07:24 - Well, Brighton have got a really good record against Wolves
07:27 and will be looking to make this their fifth consecutive win
07:30 against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
07:32 And when Brighton last played Wolves in August,
07:35 it was a 4-1 win away with Estupinan,
07:38 who's in form right now,
07:39 getting a goal as well on that fixture.
07:41 And it looks like it will be another one
07:44 where we'll see a lot of goals.
07:46 And it'll be interesting to see
07:48 if having this warm weather training
07:51 will benefit the players
07:53 who are now going to be going into the cold February UK,
07:56 winter and January that's coming up.
07:59 So we'll see how it goes.
08:01 We'll see how it goes.
08:02 - Yeah. Do you agree with that, Sam?
08:05 Do you think it could be a bit, you know,
08:07 the warm weather of Dubai straight into a cold match
08:09 against Wolves, do you think that could have any impact?
08:13 - It potentially could.
08:14 I mean, obviously I was just saying about how much
08:17 of a positive impact having a rest could have.
08:19 Then you also wonder maybe if it does happen,
08:22 maybe an adverse effect, as you say,
08:23 warm weather, suddenly you're back to the freezing cold
08:26 and you never know, it could have an impact.
08:29 But I think it's going to be a tough game either way.
08:31 I think Wolves are obviously in decent form.
08:33 And I think Gary O'Neill has had a superb impact
08:37 with them really, in that they are flying quite high,
08:39 really, I think they're 11th place at the moment,
08:41 just a one point behind Newcastle with the game in hand.
08:44 And they're not too far below Chelsea either.
08:47 And they're actually only three points below Brighton.
08:49 So they're not too far down.
08:52 And I think it will be a tough game.
08:54 And hopefully, as Henry says, that Brighton can continue
08:57 that great record they do have against Wolves.
09:00 But I don't think it will be as comfortable
09:02 as some of those games were, especially last season.
09:05 There was obviously a heavy, heavy win for Brighton.
09:08 So I definitely think it'll be a tough game,
09:09 but one that hopefully Brighton can get through.
09:12 - Yeah, yeah, no, I agree.
09:14 I think it will be tough.
09:14 But Gary O'Neill is a good manager.
09:16 I think he's done a good job there.
09:18 But Brighton are expected to complete
09:21 and announce an eight million deal
09:22 for Valentin Barko this week.
09:24 The Seagulls activated the release clause
09:26 with Boca Juniors and a 19 year old
09:29 will certainly add to head coach Roberto Di Zerbi's options
09:32 on the left flank.
09:34 How exciting do you think it is for Brighton, Henry?
09:37 Do you think you should be kept to the front or loaned out?
09:40 - Well, personally, if you look at the wingers
09:43 that we've got at the moment on the left,
09:44 you've got Ansi Fatih, you've got Simon Didinger,
09:47 you've got Karim Mottoma, all have been
09:49 a little bit injury prone this season.
09:52 Some of them gonna be out for quite a while.
09:55 So it might be worth Di Zerbi potentially taking a chance
09:59 on this new signing that we'll be having very soon,
10:01 shortly to be announced.
10:03 And he might just provide another level of creativity
10:07 that we've been needing.
10:09 I think that previous season we had Karim Mottoma
10:13 was just that magician and he really burst into the scene.
10:17 We haven't seen as much of that this season,
10:19 not to say that he's not anywhere near as talented
10:22 as he has been for us, but it looks like having a player
10:26 like this Valentin Barko coming in might be some opportunity
10:32 to kind of create a bit more competition
10:34 in an already quite crowded left midfield,
10:37 left wing role that we already have.
10:39 - Just on a slightly side note,
10:51 former Brighton manager and current Ghana head coach,
10:54 Chris Hewton was reportedly attacked by a Ghanaian fan
10:58 at the team's hotel after their defeat
11:02 against Cape Verde in the AFCON.
11:04 The unidentified man was handed to the Ivorian police
11:08 and arrested apparently.
11:10 What's the latest there, Henry?
11:11 What's been going on over there?
11:13 - Well, there's been some recent developments
11:15 and a spokesperson for Ghana FA has kind of come out
11:20 and issued a few statements.
11:22 Basically what we can now confirm is that they've had
11:27 a meeting with the coach after,
11:28 giving him 100% assurance that they are behind him.
11:32 And they've insisted that there was a fan
11:37 that actually was just trying to get closer to the coach
11:40 at his hotel and then security had intervened on duty.
11:45 They say that there was no arrest,
11:47 but the security team did take them away from the scene.
11:49 So it looks like he wasn't actually physically attacked.
11:54 It was more of a verbal attack, but at the same time,
11:57 this is still not a nice thing to see.
11:59 I mean, you know, there's still three games left
12:03 for them to have an opportunity to progress.
12:05 And it's just a shame really, because he's, you know,
12:10 as a Brighton fan and, you know,
12:13 knowing how he manages teams,
12:15 he's genuinely a very nice, quite quiet manager,
12:19 some would say.
12:20 And for him to be involved in something like that
12:24 is a real shame.
12:25 But it does look like there was no physical attack
12:28 according to the Ghana FA and yeah, more updates.
12:33 I'm sure we'll follow after that.
12:35 - Yeah, yeah, no, it was a nasty.
12:37 And like you say, you couldn't meet a nicer guy, could you?
12:39 So hopefully it wasn't too bad and he can turn it around,
12:44 but we're just gonna go for a short break now.
12:46 And when we come back,
12:47 we'll be talking all things Crawley Town.
12:49 Crawley's playoff hopes suffered a bit of a blow
12:54 with a one nil loss against struggling Salford City
12:58 last time out.
12:59 Wasn't really a good performance
13:00 from Scott Lindsay's men, was it?
13:02 Was it, Sam?
13:04 - No, no, it wasn't at all.
13:05 And it was a bit of a surprise.
13:06 I think Crawley went into the game as favourites.
13:09 They were, as you mentioned, not too far off the playoffs
13:12 and they've had a great run of form
13:14 with a couple of brilliant away victories.
13:16 And they definitely were expected to put Salford
13:18 to the sword as they were in a really poor run of form
13:21 without a win in a long period of time.
13:24 And they were really struggling, Salford,
13:26 but you wouldn't have known that from the performance.
13:29 I think Salford right from minute one dominated Crawley.
13:32 And if it wasn't for Corey O'Day,
13:33 it could have been a lot worse than one nil.
13:36 I think the Crawley keeper put one of his best performances
13:39 in a Crawley shirt and kept out lots and lots of shots.
13:42 And the stats made for crazy reading.
13:44 I think it was about 14 shots to Crawley's one at halftime
13:47 or something like that.
13:49 Yeah, crazy. I think Salford were dominant for the first half
13:52 and I think Crawley were very fortunate to come in nil-nil.
13:55 And you thought maybe that could be a turning point
13:57 and they'd be able to make Salford regret those missed chances.
14:01 But it didn't turn out like that.
14:03 And then Salford carried on where they left off in that first half
14:06 and eventually found a winner towards the end of the game.
14:09 So, definitely a deserved win for Salford
14:11 and a bit of a disappointing performance for Crawley.
14:14 It seemed that every time they got possession of the ball,
14:16 they seemed to lose it, which is most unlike the team
14:19 this season.
14:20 Jake Williams, who's been one of the signs of the season,
14:22 probably had one of his poorer games.
14:24 He was booked very early on and that might have affected him
14:27 throughout.
14:29 But a lot of the players seemed to go missing, really.
14:31 And I suppose you can credit them for the way they defended.
14:34 And I mentioned Corey O'Day for the saves he made.
14:36 So, there's some of the positives.
14:38 And they did manage to keep the score down.
14:43 But yeah, it's, I suppose, a difficult afternoon.
14:48 Hopefully, they can bounce back quickly.
14:50 Yeah. Yeah, let's hope so.
14:52 Scott Lindsay's not really one to sort of mince his words.
14:55 He wasn't very happy, was he, after the performance?
14:57 He said it's the worst performance he's seen from Crawley.
15:01 And not just disappointed with the players,
15:03 but also with the fans as well, who sort of voiced their anger
15:07 throughout the game and even booed when the final whistle was blown.
15:10 What did you make of his comments there, Sam?
15:13 Yeah, it's not too...
15:16 We've seen comments like this from Lindsay before, even recently,
15:19 after the Wimbledon defeat at home.
15:21 He was really critical of Isai's performance.
15:24 I think it's because he expects better.
15:26 And we've come to expect better from this Crawley team,
15:28 especially on the ball.
15:29 And as I mentioned, Salford had lots of shots.
15:32 I'm just seeing a stat now.
15:33 They had 35 shots in the game, including 12 on target.
15:37 So, you can kind of understand, really,
15:38 that if they're conceding that many shots on goal,
15:41 you can understand why the manager was really unhappy.
15:45 And as you say, he said it was the worst performance he's seen
15:47 since he joined the club last year.
15:51 And I suppose it was just unexpected for him as much as the fans,
15:53 because they were in a good place and no one really saw that coming, really.
15:58 And in terms of the fans, it sounded like he was unhappy
16:01 that the players were getting some stick,
16:04 especially after the form they've been in.
16:06 And I suppose he just asked for a bit of context, I guess.
16:10 He probably just wants the fans to appreciate how far they've come
16:13 when you consider the position they were in last year,
16:15 only stayed in the League 2 by the skin of their teeth.
16:18 So, the fact that they have come so far in that time,
16:21 maybe it just needs a little bit of perspective.
16:23 And I think that's what he was most upset about,
16:25 that it only took one bad performance for the players
16:28 to really get some stick from the fans.
16:30 I think he basically said, "If you're going to criticise us,
16:33 just criticise him personally and not the players."
16:36 And I think that was his message, really.
16:38 But yeah, hopefully, Crawley can show a good response to that.
16:42 Yeah, yeah. Let's hope they can turn that around.
16:46 So, they face a rematch against their rivals,
16:49 AFC Wimbledon, on Saturday in League 2.
16:51 The Reds will be looking for revenge after losing
16:54 a reverse fixture 2-1 just before Christmas.
16:57 Do you think Crawley will get what they want, Sam?
17:00 I'd like to think so.
17:03 I think they'll definitely be after revenge, as you say,
17:05 after the 2-1 defeat at home just before Christmas.
17:08 But it won't be easy. Definitely won't be easy.
17:12 We saw at the Broadfield Stadium what a good side the Dons are.
17:15 They're some very dangerous players.
17:17 But Crawley's away form has been good.
17:19 And I can't imagine Lindsay allowing his side
17:21 to have another Salford-like performance, really.
17:24 So, I think there's a very good chance they can get the three points
17:27 and put things right from the Salford game.
17:30 But as I say, the away form's been good.
17:32 So, hopefully, they can keep that going.
17:34 And it'll be a huge, huge statement against their rivals.
17:38 Yeah, yeah. And the fixtures, they keep coming, don't they?
17:41 Thick and fast. Next Tuesday, they travel to Peterborough
17:44 for the EFL trophy clash.
17:47 And hopefully the second time lucky after the game was postponed last week.
17:51 It was all a bit of a bit of a faff.
17:54 How do you see this one going, Sam?
17:57 Yeah, another tough game for Crawley.
17:58 It's one of the worst possible ties they could have got,
18:02 obviously, in the competition.
18:03 One of the furthest places to go,
18:05 one of the toughest teams left in the competition.
18:08 As you say, second time lucky because they were due to play there last week.
18:11 And the players and the fans had arrived when they found out the game
18:15 had been postponed because of the conditions.
18:18 And it was very controversial, as you say, because quite frankly,
18:22 the game should have been postponed at one o'clock in the afternoon,
18:25 the latest and not an hour before kickoff.
18:27 And the fact that they have to travel to Peterborough once again,
18:30 hopefully they'll be able to play some football this time.
18:32 And yeah, so hopefully Crawley can win.
18:36 It's, as I say, a really tough game against a League One side
18:41 that I don't think Crawley will be under too much pressure for, really.
18:44 I think it's just a case of, yeah, doing their best.
18:47 And I think if they do get through, it's another huge step towards Wembley
18:50 for the first time in the club's history.
18:53 Good, good.
18:54 Then off the pitch, 21-year-old midfielder Kamarai Sawyer
18:58 has been recalled by West Ham.
19:01 How has he played for Crawley?
19:02 And is that a blow for them to lose him at this stage of the season?
19:06 Yeah, it's a difficult one, really, because he hasn't played many minutes for Crawley.
19:11 So I'm not too surprised that he has been recalled by West Ham.
19:15 He signed for the Reds on a season-long loan deal in July.
19:19 He's made 11 appearances for Scotland's side, scoring one goal and getting two assists.
19:24 But all three of those goal involvements did come in the EFL trophy.
19:28 So he only appeared in League Two off the bench.
19:31 He never started a League Two game.
19:33 He only played 43 minutes, actually, in the football league.
19:37 So it was not a surprise, as I say, that he's been recalled.
19:40 He's not played too much for Crawley.
19:43 And I'm sure that he'll probably go out on another loan deal,
19:46 I imagine, somewhere where he might get some more minutes to show what he can do.
19:50 But I think in the few games we did see him play in the EFL trophy, he looked decent.
19:54 So, as I say, he got a few goal involvements and he didn't look like he was struggling as much.
20:01 I think, obviously, in those games you don't have a huge amount of pressure on, I guess.
20:05 And he's playing with lots of other kind of fringe players that are really trying to make an impression.
20:10 But I think Scott Lindsay decided very early on in what starting XI he wanted for the league.
20:16 And it was very difficult to kind of get into that team, really, and to try and nudge those players out.
20:21 So he definitely suffered as a result of that, I think.
20:23 And I wish him the best of luck for the future.
20:27 Yeah, yeah, sounds good.
20:28 Hopefully he'll get some minutes elsewhere as his career goes.
20:34 And then, yeah, just moving on to the score predictions as well.
20:37 Obviously, Brighton will be back in action against Wolves.
20:41 How do you see that one going, Henry?
20:43 Lots of goals or?
20:45 I think there will be a lot of goals, to be fair.
20:48 And I think that I can see Brighton winning it, but not as comfortably as they normally do.
20:53 And I feel like this might be a high scoring 3-2 to Brighton Over Albion.
20:58 So that's what I'd say.
21:00 Yeah.
21:01 Is Joe on the score sheet, do you think?
21:03 Sorry, say that again?
21:05 Joe Pedro on the score sheet, do you think?
21:08 I hope so. I hope so.
21:09 He's been in an insane run of form.
21:11 And it's quite annoying as a Brighton fan because your players do really well.
21:16 And then out of nowhere, you see that someone's looking to buy him.
21:19 It seems like we can never have someone that's quality and actually,
21:26 you know, not have those rumours.
21:27 But I guess that shows the quality of the players that we do have here at Brighton
21:31 and that we're always producing these almost £100 million reported players
21:37 to be transferred to somewhere else.
21:39 So, yeah, let's hope that Joe Pedro can get a goal.
