00:37and in this week's show we'll be reflecting on Brighton's match against Nottingham Forest
00:41before we look ahead to Saturday's trip to Chelsea.
00:45Our arts and entertainment editor Phil Hewitt has also been speaking with musician and organiser
00:49Jack Kendon about the Brighton Jazz Festival.
00:52First, here are the top stories from across East Sussex.
00:56A woman has spoken about her battle to renew her residence parking permit because the council's
01:01computer system did not recognise her name.
01:04Lam Man Shan Sally has had a Brighton & Hove City Council Zone J parking permit in her
01:09full name for some years.
01:11All her identity documents and council tax are in her full name.
01:15And for the past three years she has not had any problems renewing the permit.
01:19But this year, her application was rejected twice because her name did not match their
01:23system.
01:25Miss Lam said I am deeply troubled. Every day I fear receiving a penalty charge notice
01:30and constantly check if a parking officer is issuing a ticket.
01:34This endless worry is overwhelming and I don't know when it will end.
01:38Now a council in East Sussex has urged people to be on the lookout and report any sightings
01:43of an invasive Asian Hornet.
01:46Hastings Borough Council put out a statement to say please keep your eyes open for Asian
01:50Hornets.
01:51The British Beekeepers Association has advice on how to spot them and what to do if you
01:55see one.
01:57It comes after an inspector for the Animal and Plant Health Agency's National Bee Unit
02:01responded to a sighting of a lone Asian Hornet at Westfield earlier this year.
02:06Last year there was a reported sighting of an Asian Hornet in New Haven.
02:10As well as having a very painful sting, the Asian Hornet can eat up to 50 honey bees a
02:14day after decapitating them and pulling off their wings.
02:18Not so nice.
02:19Should they become established here, the Asian Hornet would pose an enormous threat to honey
02:23bees that are already struggling due to loss of habitat and the impact of pesticides.
02:28Brighton Railway Station has been renamed to honour Bly Toomey, one of Britain's youngest
02:32ever Paralympians.
02:34Just weeks after winning her first Paralympic medals, Brighton Station, managed by Southern,
02:39has been renamed the Blyton in recognition of the 14-year-old's remarkable two bronze
02:44medal wins at the 2024 Paralympic Games alongside Fliss Pickard.
02:50From Tuesday 24th September until the day after World CP Day on October 7th, passengers
02:56arriving at the station will be greeted by the new Welcome to Blyton sign, celebrating
03:01Toomey's historic achievement.
03:03Govia Thameslink Railway's tribute not only commemorates her sporting success, but also
03:07showcases the pride of Toomey's local Brighton community.
03:11Plans to regenerate Hastings Town Centre will move ahead, following a pause to allow for
03:16further discussions on design.
03:18On Monday 23rd September, Councillor Clare Dowling, East Sussex County Council's Lead
03:23Member for Transport and Environment, agreed to amend plans for the Hastings Town Centre
03:27Public Realm and Greens Connections project.
03:30The amendment removes the initial proposals for a one-way bus route on Havelock Road.
03:35Moving forward, Havelock Road and Harold Place will remain open for buses, bicycles and taxis
03:41in both directions, but closed off to the other traffic.
03:44And finally, a trainee horticulturist at Bates Greens Farm in Arlington has won a silver
03:49medal for her show garden at BBC's Gardeners World live annual flower show in Birmingham.
03:55Emma Lindsay, 28 from Brighton, is on a year-long placement under the guidance of head gardener
04:00Emma Rees, and the beautiful garden has been maintained in the memory of the woman who
04:04created it more than 50 years ago.
04:06It's won a major award from the National Garden Society.
04:11Good afternoon, my name is Phil Hewitt, Group Arts Editor at Sussex Newspapers.
04:16Something fabulous coming up in Brighton very soon.
04:19It's the Brighton Jazz Festival from September 26th to 29th, and it's on the Palace Pier.
04:25And Jack Kendon, you're going to tell me all about it.
04:28Now, why is Brighton Jazz Festival such a special thing?
04:31What is it about it, would you say?
04:33Well, I think there's a few things.
04:35It represents the incredible jazz scene and music scene that we have in Brighton, which
04:42has been a kind of tradition for a number of years.
04:46It also is on the Brighton Palace Pier, one of the most iconic tourist attractions in
04:55the UK.
04:56I think it's the most visited tourist attraction in the UK.
04:59And what does that give the festival, that you're in such a location?
05:04Oh, it's spectacular.
05:07On a good day, it's absolutely spectacular.
05:09The sunrise when you're a quarter of a mile into the ocean is truly wonderful.
05:15And it's a really remarkable experience for the audience and the artist.
05:21And even when it's raining, it's still, you know, it's biblical at times.
05:25So, you know, it's a really, truly amazing venue to run the festival.
05:32And there's plenty of family resonance for you, isn't there?
05:35There is!
05:36This is personal too, isn't it?
05:37There is.
05:38So the Palace Pier was actually owned by my extended family.
05:43Oliver Dalton was his name.
05:44If you Google him, he will come up as a charismatic entrepreneur.
05:49And my mum, she used to work at the Dodgeons when she was like 15.
05:53So when we first decided to do it on the Palace Pier, it was, you know, it was a lovely thing
06:00for my family.
06:02And then also my dad is a double bass player, and he actually formed the first ever Brighton
06:05Jazz Festival 40 years ago.
06:07So it was kind of a collision of both sides of the family.
06:12So that first year that we did it, it truly was quite special.
06:15And it's been one...
06:16So that first incarnation had disappeared, hadn't it, the one that your dad set up?
06:19It had, I think.
06:20I think it kind of lasted a couple of years, and then that was it.
06:25And it kind of didn't happen again, I think.
06:28Then the Brighton Festival took over, and then they had a jazz element.
06:31But the Brighton Jazz Festival just kind of stopped, you know.
06:34So why was now the time to bring it back then, do you think?
06:39Well, I think now was the time because the Brighton jazz scene has been flourishing in
06:47the last, you know, five to 10 years.
06:49And really, we decided to do it because we felt that Brighton really deserved to be on
06:57the map.
06:58And it's a thriving jazz scene, deserved to get that recognition.
07:03So yeah, we just put our teams together and along, working along with The Pier and Latest
07:11TV, we kind of formed this wonderful festival.
07:15Fantastic.
07:16Now, you formed it, what, four years ago?
07:18And the last four years haven't exactly been the easiest years for the entertainment industry.
07:24So if you can do well in the current context, you're going to do brilliantly when things
07:27really pick up, aren't you?
07:29And you have done well.
07:30Yeah, we have.
07:32It has been sold out every year.
07:35And I think, you know, a lot of that has to do with a desire for people to see live music,
07:42especially after kind of Covid and that lockdown.
07:45Lots of people were just kind of desperate to see something real again.
07:52But also the lineups that we've booked, not only is it kind of celebrating Brighton and
07:59it's celebrating the UK jazz scene, it's celebrating the international jazz scene.
08:04And our programme is definitely representative of that.
08:09And you've got a particularly strong programme this year, haven't you?
08:14Yeah, so each year we have always looked to bring in an American.
08:21So in the past, we've brought in Grammy award-winning trumpet player Keone Harrold and Benny
08:26Benack. This year we have the sensational alto saxophonist Patrick Bartley.
08:31He will be joined by award-winning pianist and rising UK star Destinil Gordon and his
08:38trio. And to join them on the programme starting, our programme actually kicks off on
08:47Thursday 26th and it is rising star Sean Payne and his quartet and followed by Rachel
08:56Cohen at 9.30 with her New York rising star piano trio featuring Mickey Yamanaka.
09:08On Friday the 27th, we have Nat, who featured at this year's Love Supreme and absolutely
09:14blew the crowd away.
09:17And they will be followed by Teejo and Not To Be Missed, who also completely smashed it at
09:22Love Supreme as well on our stage.
09:26Sunday the 29th is Claire Martin, kind of award-winning tour de force with her quartet.
09:38And it's kind of an A-list of legends, Tim Garland and Jason Rebello.
09:47And joining Patrick on the Saturday is the sensational Cal trio.
09:52So it's an incredible line up.
09:53We're very excited.
09:54Everyone's buying their tickets very quick.
09:56We do have some tickets left on Thursday, Friday and Sunday.
09:59Saturday is sadly sold out.

10:24It's like you're super well-established already, isn't it?
10:27Yeah, I think you can kind of take your hat off to Brighton and the city that it is.
10:35And yeah, I think it's been a wonderful ride and we only kind of hope for it to get
10:43bigger and better. And each year it kind of does.
10:45I was going to say, you do sell out.
10:47Are you thinking to expand in future years or have you kind of reached the optimum?
10:51It's been a conversation at the moment.
10:53We are happy with where we are at and the kind of template that we have on the Brighton
10:58Palace Pier. So for now, this is our, this is where we stay.

11:51Brighton were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Nottingham Forest in the Premier League last
11:55Sunday, and they also learned who they'll be playing in the fourth round of the Carabao
11:58Cup yesterday.
12:00We'll pick over the bones of Albion's fiery draw at Nottingham Forest against Nottingham
12:04Forest and also look ahead to this Saturday's clash for the Premier League.

12:33But first, we'll take a quick look back at the Nottingham Forest game, Sam.
12:37What did you make of that?
12:38It was probably two points dropped in the end, wasn't it?
12:41Yeah, it certainly was two points dropped.
12:43And another frustrating match for Brighton, who were looking to bounce back after that
12:48draw against Ipswich the weekend before.
12:50It's another home match, so they really were looking to get back to winning ways.
12:55And it didn't get off to the best of starts with Carlos Bolaiva giving away a penalty
13:00with Chris Wood slossing the penalty home against the former Albion striker, making no
13:04mistake. And yeah, it didn't start as a
13:08as they would have wanted to.
13:09And against a team that hadn't yet been beaten in Nottingham Forest like Brighton, that's
13:13not obviously the start you want.
13:14You want to just get off on the front foot and to start as you mean to go on.
13:19But they did respond quite well.
13:20And they were dominating the ball and looking to carve out the opening, which eventually
13:24came when Jan-Paul Van Dijk's brilliant cross was headed in brilliantly by Jack
13:30Hinterwood, who was a superb header.
13:32And Brighton suddenly looked in the ascendancy and only had to wait another three more
13:37minutes to take the lead, with Danny Welbeck scoring a really good free kick.
13:42It was his first career free kick and the first one Brighton had scored since Graham
13:46Potter was manager in his final game, which Alexis McAllister spectacularly scored.
13:51So, yeah, it was a brilliant moment for Brighton and they managed to take the lead going
13:55into halftime. And you felt that they would just build on that and they would potentially
13:58get a third goal. And they certainly had the chances to do that, but they didn't take
14:02them. And the closest they came was Welbeck again.
14:04He kind of weaved in and out of the defenders and managed to get a shot away.
14:07But it was well kept out by the keeper, Sells.
14:12But Forrest made Brighton pay in the end and they hit them on the counter-attack.
14:16Brighton were caught playing that high line once again.
14:18And it was Sosa that scored on the counter-attack for Forrest.
14:23And, yeah, another frustrating point.
14:26And it got a little bit out of hand in the last few minutes of the game with three red
14:30cards, including to both managers after Morgan
14:34Gibbs-White went in very late on João Pedro.
14:37And it was a really late challenge.
14:38He was already on a yellow. So why he made that challenge, I'm not too sure.
14:42And it all got very dramatic with both managers obviously sent off and Gibbs-White was
14:46given his second yellow. I think it all stemmed because the referee initially said he got
14:51the ball. There was a fourth official, but then intervener said, no, that should have
14:55been a red. And I don't think the Forrest camp was too happy about that.
14:58And then there was a choice word said, it's very aggressive from the pictures that were
15:02shown on the screens at the time.
15:05So, yeah, there was a dramatic end to what was a really frustrating match for Brighton.
15:09Yeah, yeah.
15:10Now, Herzéla was asked, I was at the press conference today for the pre-Chelsea press
15:14conference, and Herzéla was asked about that tackle again.
15:16And he said that the TV, you could see it on TV, but it wasn't, it doesn't do it justice.
15:21If you're there live, you could see he thought it was a pretty vicious tackle.
15:25And he said that the weight of the challenge when you saw it live was different to what it
15:30looked like on TV.
15:33Henry, what did you think of the tackle?
15:35It was, you know, and they're going to be about Jal-Pedro now, and they're already missing
15:39Matt O'Reilly from a similar type of, you know, challenge when he picked up his ankle
15:45injury against Crawley earlier this season.
15:48Yeah, well, I think that it was one of those challenges where there was a lot of
15:51frustration in the game at that point where Nottingham Forest, who were originally 1-0 up and
15:57saw themselves 2-1 down by half time, got a goal back in the second half, were frustrated in
16:02the way that they'd sort of let that 1-0 lead slip.
16:05I think, I think Brighton, on the other hand, was, you know, disappointed about conceding
16:111-0, getting 2-1 at half time and then not being able to push on in those last 10 minutes to
16:17get that goal because it really did look like it was coming.
16:20And Andrew Croft spoke to the media after the game in replacement of Herzéla after that game.
16:25And he said that he felt like it was going to be coming for that third goal.
16:30And he said that it was a lesson that we needed to learn as a team.
16:34That's what he said.
16:35I think that the challenge, although it was a really weighted challenge and they looked like
16:41there was a lot behind it, I don't think that there was any malicious intention to actually hurt
16:48João Pedro. And that was sort of echoed by Andrew Croft as well in the post-match press
16:53conference. But I do think it was definitely worthy of that second yellow and it's really
16:59disappointed. You know, he's already had a knock when he was playing for Brazil that he'd
17:03sort of come out of.
17:05He'd only had 20 minutes of that game and he still continued on after that challenge as
17:09well, even though it resulted in basically, you know, three red cards and caused a lot of
17:16fiery action at the end of that game.
17:18But, yeah, it's not looking likely when he's going to be back, to be honest.
17:23The press conference, Herzéla was saying that he's not sure how long he'll be out.
17:28He sort of admitted, but he does think he's a good healer.
17:32He's convinced he'll be back soon, but he's not sure.
17:36And you went to that as well.
17:37And did he, I wanted to ask you as well, did he sound sure on that or do you think that
17:43this could be an issue?
17:44Yeah, it was really like, well, we're going to take this week by week.
17:48So it's looking as though it could be, you know, and when you say week by week, it's,
17:52you know, you start to think, oh, is that going to be three weeks, four weeks or how
17:56long? We don't know.
17:57But it is a shame for Pedro because he'd started the season so well and he was looking
18:02like Albion's best attacker, wasn't he?
18:04Against, you know, he got the goals against Man United and Arsenal and they're going to
18:08miss him, aren't they, Sam, at Chelsea?
18:10Yeah. Yeah, it's bad news for my fantasy team as well.
18:12I'd only just put him in for that knock against Brazil.
18:16And then he's only played, obviously, about 10 minutes since then and had to take him
18:20out again. So it was a waste of transfer.
18:22But yeah, it is a shame, really, because he's made such a good start to the season and
18:26he's such an important player for Brighton and he really does make a difference.
18:30You felt like when he came on against Forest, you kind of got that sense of anticipation
18:35of what you might do and might create that opening.
18:37And obviously it didn't happen on the day.
18:38And unfortunately, we're not going to see it for a while by the sound of it.
18:41So hopefully it's not too long and he'll be back in action soon.
18:46But yeah, definitely a really disappointing blow to Brighton.
18:49Yeah, yeah. What have you made of Chelsea, Henry?
18:52They looked good, didn't they, against West Ham last season, last week, 3-0 victory there.
18:58And they've just got so many attacking options, haven't they?
19:00And Nicholas Jackson, he looks, you know, he looks a complete package these days, doesn't he?
19:07Definitely. I don't know what Enzo Maresco has been doing, but he does look like a really good side at the moment.
19:15They're showing so much, you know, in terms of promising signs and they're currently in fifth with 10 points.
19:21And yeah, you've got to say from the way that it looked in the summer transfer window, in terms of the fact that there were loads of people on the sort of training sort of facilities, it looked like it was a big jumbled mess.
19:34The media was saying, what's going on?
19:36It's going to be another one of those seasons where they've signed so many players and they've got so much of a big team, they're not going to be able to cope.
19:43But Maresco is really sort of rising up to that challenge in these first few games.
19:48I have been impressed with them.
19:49I think, obviously, with that 3-0 victory against a sort of struggling West Ham side at the moment, I think that, you know, it looked good.
19:57And I think that Brighton are going to be, you know, having a real challenge on their hands here.
20:02I think in terms of the way Chelsea have been, this is some of the best form that they've had in ages, really.
20:08And in terms of the Chelsea game, Chelsea won both of their Premier League meetings with Brighton last season, despite having a player sent off in each game.
20:17And interestingly, although Chelsea won all three of their Premier League away games this season, they're winless at Stamford Bridge at the moment in the Premier League, drawing one and losing one.
20:28So it could be an interesting one.
20:29They'll be really up for trying to make this a fortress this season.
20:33So I do think that this will be an all-guns-blazing attack.
20:36And we know how tasty it is, especially with the amount of transfers that Brighton have been able to get Chelsea and vice versa.
20:47So, yeah, we'll see.
20:49Yeah, yeah.
20:50Well, I think there were four, well, if you include Levi Colwell, there were four ex-Brighton players in the team against West Ham.
20:57You had Sanchez in goal, Colwell at the back, Moises Caicedo and also Kukerea as well.
21:03So I'm sure that will add a bit of extra spice, won't it, Sam, to the fixture, especially for the fans.
21:10I think so.
21:12Brighton can go there with confidence after the performance at Arsenal, that they can take a lot from that, I think.
21:19Absolutely.
21:19Yeah, I'm really looking forward to this match, actually.
21:21It should be a really good one between two sides that are obviously in decent form.
21:27I think obviously Brighton will be really frustrated for those two draws.
21:30They're still unbeaten, so they'll still take that into the game at Chelsea.
21:34And as you say, with the confidence of knowing that they took a point from Arsenal at the Emirates, so they can certainly do that away at Chelsea as well.
21:41And as you say, they obviously didn't have much luck against Chelsea last season in those three games, including the defeat in the League Cup.
21:50But before that, it was a run of five Premier League games without a win against Brighton for Chelsea.
21:55They were really struggling against them until last season, so you wonder kind of how it will be this time out.
22:00But I think, yeah, it should be a really good game.
22:02Obviously, with Joao Pedro out, you're kind of looking at Danny Welbeck to continue his brilliant form and hope that hopefully that Rutter will start to show his best.
22:10I don't necessarily think he's a prolific goalscorer, but he hasn't yet shown, I think, the full extent of what he can do and what he didn't lead.
22:19And he may have found so devastated when he left.
22:21So I don't think we've quite seen that side just yet.
22:24But I think there's still to come.
22:25And the same with Evan Ferguson as well, coming back from injury.
22:28He showed some decent signs against Wolves in the Carabao Cup.
22:33So I think, yeah, there's definitely an opportunity for these Brighton players, with Joao Pedro out, because they're so stacked in those attacking areas.
22:39I think he needs to start at Stamford Bridge to get the confidence going again.
22:42And they've got to get these goals, because that was the problem, really, obviously, against Nottingham Forest, I guess Ipswich, sorry.
22:51And then, obviously, they managed to get a couple of goals against Forest, but were a bit leaky at the back.
22:54So they need to find that balance and to get a good result.
22:58Yeah, yeah, yeah.
22:59It's that high line, isn't it, that Herzéla likes.
23:02If it works, it's great, isn't it?
23:04They're catching, you know, catching.
23:05You can press high up the field and really put the pressure on the opposition.
23:09But they're always a bit vulnerable, aren't they, at the back?
23:12Yeah, it could be a worry against Chelsea.
23:14I think with the form that Jackson's in, we saw at the West Ham that he could take advantage of that high line, because he's obviously a very quick player.
23:21And if he's now starting to show his clinical edge, which we've not really seen until now,
23:26if he can start putting those chances away, then it could be dangerous against Bryson.
23:30So, yeah, hopefully they tighten that defensive frailty up a little bit.
23:35Yeah, yeah.
