00:00My Outro For My 20th Birthday
00:30Hello and welcome to Latest TV News. I'm Sam Morton, a reporter for Sussex World and
00:37later in the show we will be discussing Brighton & Hove Albion's pre-season which has seen
00:41them travel to Japan this week, and we also have an exclusive interview with former Albion
00:46boss Gus Poirier. First, here are the top stories from across the county.
00:51Three carpet-right stores in Brighton, Eastbourne and St Leonard's are set to close after the
00:56company went into administration. The company has been bought in a rescue deal by rival
01:00Tappy but more than 200 stores will shut across the UK with the loss of more than 1,000 jobs.
01:07PwC announced on Monday that Zeef Hussain, Rachel Wilkinson and Peter Dickens of PwC
01:13have been appointed as joint administrators of Carpet-Right Ltd. PwC has said that the
01:18joint administrators completed the sale of 54 Carpet-Right stores and two logistics hubs
01:23to CWHP Ltd which is part of the Tappy Group. They said the transaction includes the transfer
01:29of 308 employees. However, the Brighton, Eastbourne and St Leonard's branches will shut as they
01:35are not part of the 54 stores that have been bought by Tappy.
01:39Meanwhile, a police investigation is underway after a man was knocked unconscious cracking
01:43his skull at a railway station in Sussex. British Transport Police said detectives are
01:48investigating an assault at Falmouth station in Brighton. At around 10.10pm on July 14th,
01:54an argument broke out between two groups at the station, a police spokesperson said. The
01:58victim was punched, causing him to fall to the floor and crack his skull and there was
02:02a knock unconscious. BTP released photos of three people of interest
02:07in the investigation on Tuesday July 23rd. In an update on Wednesday morning, a police
02:12spokesperson said three people have now been identified in connection with the incident.
02:16They are not looking to identify anyone else and thank the public for their support.
02:21Claudia Winkleman has been pictured at Brighton railway station as the search continues to
02:25find more of the UK's most exciting amateur pianists. Crowds gathered at Brighton railway
02:30station as filming took place for series 3 of Channel 4's The Piano last Monday July
02:3515th. The reality show sees the Traitors and Strictly
02:38Come Dancing presenter Claudia Winkleman, pop singer Mika and superstar pianist Lang
02:43Lang aim to unearth amateur pianists across the UK, inviting them to play live at some
02:48of the nation's busiest railway stations. One performer from each location is selected
02:53to perform at an end-of-series concert at the Royal Festival Hall.
02:57Animal rescue charities in Sussex have warned motorists to look out for drunk seagulls.
03:01East Sussex WRAS and Somthing Wildlife Rescue said they are expecting an increase in calls
03:07about road casualty gulls. It comes as flying ant season begins, which sees swarms of insects
03:12leave their nests to find a mate. Flying ants are particularly delicious to seagulls, according
03:17to Somthing Wildlife Rescue. However, the insects contain formic acid, which is toxic
03:22to seagulls when consumed in large amounts. The chemical causes the gulls to act disorientated
03:27and often leaves them unable to fly. During this time, many seagulls are spotted stumbling
03:32around in roads, leading to an increased number of the birds being hit by cars.
03:36Finally, two restaurants in Sussex are among the ten across the UK launching a limited
03:41edition plate-sized prawn cracker, an April Fool's Day joke which has become a reality.
03:46Deliveroo has partnered up with Giggling Squid to revolutionise the way Brits consume their
03:51Thai takeaway. A Deliveroo spokesperson said, the innovative creation comes as order data
03:56from Deliveroo shows that prawn crackers are the most common Thai side dish ordered on
04:00the app, overtaking spring rolls and chicken satay.
04:04In 2023 alone, Giggling Squid delivered more than 55,000 prawn crackers to UK households
04:09via Deliveroo and it took hooked up an estimated 16,000 individual prawn crackers each week.
04:16The limited edition plate-sized prawn crackers will be available to order exclusively on
04:20Deliveroo at ten Giggling Squid branches for £99, whilst stocks last.
04:25These include the restaurants in Church Road, Hove and Market Square, Brighton, both open
04:29from 12 to 10.30pm.
04:31Welcome back and it's a pleasure to be joined by Gus Poyer, a former Brighton manager and
04:36most recently the manager of Greece. So, first and foremost, Gus, I just wanted to
04:42say how are you and how's life been treating you?
04:45Oh, good, I'm very good. I finished my contract in Greece 31st of March, so I was there two
04:51years and three months. It was a great experience, international level, great time. I was convinced
04:57that I was continuing, you know, the things that we created during the two years and how
05:05close we were to the main objective. It was a perfect set-up to qualify for the World
05:11Cup, but, OK, things happen in different countries, different federations. It was elections for
05:17a new president and, you know, the new presidents, they won their own coach and, OK, things that
05:23happen in football. But I had a great time and it was spectacular, everything that happened
05:28apart from one penalty in the game against Georgia.
05:33I wanted to just sort of cast your mind a little bit back, just a few years to when
05:38you were managing Brighton and when you did take over in 2009. You know, the club was
05:45in League One and struggling, so when you first got there, what were your main managerial
05:50priorities to turn the team around, get morale up and get them into the championship?
05:56Well, I remember my first week, my first few days before we played Southampton away. It
06:03was on my birthday, 15th of November, and we won 3-1. It was spectacular. Two things
06:09that we worked a lot on was responsibilities, you know, for example, marking and defending
06:17for life and then on really, really, really caring about the ball. You know, for a reason
06:25in English, this game is called football. So can we treat the football well and not
06:31just kicking it and rush and run? The vision of the chairman, Tony Blum, was always there.
06:39It was incredible. I mean, I had an absolutely top class relationship with Tony, with the
06:45chairman. The connection was spectacular from the beginning. I think we were made to
06:52work together. OK, and it was it was clear that it was working very well. So the vision
06:58was always there. I think that I was trying to explain to someone from Sunderland the
07:05opposite to what I'm going to say to you now. I think when you are in a club that they have
07:10this word that now is so famous, methodology of working, methodologically,
07:15periodisation, blah, blah, blah. There is no club like Brighton in the way they find the coaches,
07:21OK? All the teams, they just change the coach depending on the momentum. It doesn't matter
07:27if they play the same football or the football character or whatever. Now, the coach that
07:32Brighton have now is outstanding and you're going to love him, OK? And I can tell you because I was
07:38lucky enough to meet him, OK? I had a player play for me a few games in Greece. He was playing for
07:46St. Pauli in the second division of Germany. So I travelled to meet him, to meet the player
07:51personally, because I didn't know him. I didn't call him for one year and a half and I called him
07:55at the end of my stay there. And he was Fabian. It was so good to come down on the day of the game
08:02and he spent two hours with me talking about football. And I'm telling you, I am 56 years old
08:10and if that guy said to me at four o'clock, three o'clock in the afternoon that day,
08:13do you want to play tonight? I will play for him because it's incredible the way he understands
08:19football, how he wants to play football, how he loves football and what he's done with St. Pauli
08:26that when he went out. So I was delighted when I saw that the chairman Tony Blanc was approaching
08:33Fabian as a new coach and I'm absolutely delighted and it's going to be amazing, I promise you,
08:39how the team is going to play this year. That's amazing. One final question about Brighton and
08:44then a final one for you. Everyone was speaking about Fabian Herzler's age, 31 years old. From
08:51what you've just told me there, those people don't need to even be considering that. Don't worry.
08:58When you have a coach that is playing away from home in Berlin and the day of the game
09:06comes down to see an international coach and have a chat for two hours and he's not panicking about
09:12the game or trying to do... because everything is done. He worked all week to play that game,
09:19everything was done. It was just the last meeting and go and play and perform and they won that game
09:23by the way. I was at the stadium and I think he got the personality and the character
09:33that he looked like this. With all respect to Fabian, don't get me wrong, he looks like he's 50
09:37years old, not 31. I see. My final question for you was, you've managed a lot of teams,
09:47you've had a really interesting career, you've had a wide range of teams, you've even been in
09:52China. What's the one thing, I wanted to know, a bit of a random question, but what's the one thing
09:59that has surprised you about being a manager? There is many things but I think that the main
10:06one that I try to convince clubs, owners, sport directors, CEOs, is that when from the top
10:17they say and set up a line of work and a line of objective that is clear outside,
10:26they clear the path of the coach massively. But where it's like kind of silence and kind of
10:35let the fans think about what we need to do and then something doesn't work very well,
10:42then everything is on top of the manager. So I would love my chairman or my CEO or my sport
10:49director to come out and say, for example, Brighton, we need to finish in the top 10,
10:54we need to maintain the style of play, we need to keep creating this atmosphere around the club,
11:01we need to keep growing up, we can compete in Europe better, and then the coach will love that
11:08because he knows everybody agrees and knows why is the main objective.
11:12Cheers Gus, it was great to speak to you. Stay tuned for the Goldmoth Action Podcast coming next.
11:32Welcome to another episode of the Goldmoth Action Podcast where we take a look at all the latest
11:44goings on at Brighton, Hove, Albion and Crawley Town. I'm Matt Poul and I'm joined by Brighton
11:49writers Derren Howard and Henry Bryan and Sam Morton who covers both Albion and Crawley Town.
11:54Brighton kicked off their tour of Japan in emphatic fashion thumping J-League outfit
11:58Kashima Antlers 5 on Wednesday afternoon. We'll pick over the bones of Albion Superbowl
12:02and plus we'll bring you all the latest news from Crawley Town and once again it's not been quiet.
12:07You can read all the latest stories we are talking about with videos and pictures online
12:10at sussexworld.co.uk forward slash or and you can check out other great videos on shotstv.com
12:15and freeview channel 276. You may also be watching on latest TV so thank you very much for tuning in
12:21but goals from Yankuba Minte, Jeremy Salmiento, Yassine Ayari and Amario Cosi-Adubri helped
12:29Seagulls thump Kashima Antlers in the first game of their Japanese tour and what did you make of
12:33the performance Derren? I know it's admittedly it's not a competitive game but Fabian Hertzler
12:38can't have asked for a much better first game in charge can he? No you're right Matt it was
12:44really good to watch. They kept possession well. They set up in a three at the back
12:51in a formation and then it was hard to gauge what sort of formation was in midfield and was
12:57up front. It was very interchangeable. There was lots of clever movement from the players and
13:05and yeah it was competitive for a while. For the first half
13:11the Kashima Antlers they looked pretty good. They're lively. It's sort of they're in the
13:17middle of their season so they're up to speed. They're fully fit and it was Brighton's first
13:23sort of public game under Herzler and they looked good. Like I said they kept possession well but
13:30they looked sharp in attack as well. It wasn't just sort of possession knocking it about. They
13:35really made some good attacking moves and lots of good interplay. So yeah very encouraging and
13:41really good for the confidence as well for the new manager coming in. Lots of question marks
13:46about his experience and how he's going to cope in the Premier League and his squad and
13:52how the players would take to him as well and you know after Deserby they're on a tour away
13:57so they're in Japan and this is their first taste of what it's going to be like under Herzler and
14:04the type of guy that he is and what he wants from the players. So it's all a sort of getting to know
14:10me at this stage type thing and as much with the players and the manager as well. But as you
14:17mentioned there was some good goals. Minter's goal which kicked things off. Lovely goal. He
14:25really showed some good skill. James Milner who's back after his hamstring issues at the end of last
14:30season. He played a nice through ball and he cut in from the right-hand side, sat a couple of
14:35defenders down and then calmly stroked it in the corner. It's lovely and yeah like you say Sarmiento
14:42he gave a sort of timely reminder of his talents as well. What's going to happen to him we're not
14:49quite sure as yet. Brighton has just got so many attacking options now. Yasin Ayari, he thumped
14:56one in as well and then yeah the star of the show was the new lad from Arsenal and he
15:04looked really good. His first goal, I sent a tweet out when he finished it and he just
15:09looked like Saka as he came in. He was behind him in the Arsenal pecking order and at Arsenal
15:17they were calling him the new Saka and you can see why. He's just full of skill, very calm in front
15:23of goal as well for both of his goals and yeah really couldn't have gone any better for their
15:30first game under Herzegovina and a good confidence boost for the new players coming in as well.
15:37Well absolutely, you've mentioned a few players there Deren.
15:39Abby and you, 23 of them. What would it be in pre-season in the game against
15:43Kashima but which of them stood out for you Henry? The new boys as Deren mentioned,
15:47they look like they're particularly impressed. Well I will mention Koizumi in a minute but first
15:53and foremost I wanted to congratulate Okubo Minta because he was quality for that goal that he
16:00scored. Being able to skim past those players and look we know it's not going to be the most
16:04competitive game in the world and this is an opportunity for Japanese fans to meet
16:10Brighton and Hove Albion players and expand Brighton and Hove Albion's reach further afield
16:16but it was great to see that Minta was able to go past that defence so effortlessly, so easy
16:25and he seems like a real talent that we've got on our hands for a decent fee. It's not
16:30normal for Brighton to sign a 20-year-old because he's just had his birthday, 20-year-old
16:36and player for about just over 30 million pounds or thereabouts but he seems like he might be a
16:44really good purchase for the Albion and I'm really looking forward to seeing him play
16:47in the Premier League and seeing how he gets on. It's a real interesting one to see
16:53some of these younger players really performing well. Koizumi as well, I mean as Deren mentioned
16:59he did finish like Saka in the first goal and in the second goal I think his confidence to just
17:04keep running with the ball even though there was a mistake made by the defender,
17:08by the opposition defender, I think it was great to see that he just had that confidence to keep
17:13going and actually back himself to score as well, not sort of cut it back and pass to someone else
17:18and wanting to sort of make his mark and let people know that he is here and he's ready to
17:23make an impact and ready to do the business for the Albion which was great to see.
17:29And what was Hazela's view of things after the win Deren? He must have been
17:32pleased with what he saw I imagine? Yeah he was, he couldn't have been,
17:37you know it was a perfect day for him on his first outing and I think the fact that they
17:43played so well, they got the win as well, it gives the players confidence in him as well
17:48and his tactics and his methods so in that regard I think he will be very pleased.
17:54He's very reluctant to talk about individuals, if you say Koza Dubri played well or Minta played
18:01well, he sort of brushes it off, he's reluctant to praise individuals, he always talks about
18:08the team and how the team's functioning as a whole and how they're communicating.
18:15What I quite liked as well is that he was really annoyed about the goal that they conceded as well
18:21so he wasn't, he was obviously very pleased with the five goals scored but they had a
18:27consolation with 10 minutes to go and yeah that irritated him and that very annoyed him and he
18:37didn't sort of blame anybody but he wanted Steele to have a clean sheet and obviously they didn't
18:43quite achieve that and I just found that quite interesting that he wasn't getting carried away
18:49with the result, he was still sort of looking at areas that they can improve and yeah I think that
18:56bodes well and they've got their next game against Tokyo Verde on Sunday as well so I expect
19:02a number of the players that weren't quite fit enough to be involved in yesterday's game to
19:09come in. Max Whiffer, the lad from who they signed from Fyenoord, I think he could be
19:16seeing some minutes in the next game as well so and perhaps Karl Rushworth as well.
19:21Crystal Palace in their only pre-season game at the Borefield Stadium before the new season.
19:26Yourself and Henry will be in attendance covering the game for Sussex World, Sam.
19:30How much are you both looking forward to that one and do you think you'll get a glimpse of
19:34England's stars Dean Henderson, Mark Gay, Adam Wharton and Eber Richie is it?
19:39Yeah I'm really looking forward to this one actually. I was at the same fixture in pre-season
19:43last year when Palace visited Crawley and Eze was playing on the day and he ran rings around
19:48the Crawley defence. It was a sight to behold really, he really saw how quality of a player
19:54he is and why he was eventually chosen for England. I don't think he'll play again this time
19:59because he did come in for a couple of games for England in the Euros and I'm assuming that they're
20:03going to be given an extended break I suppose his teammates at Palace, I'm not too sure. They
20:07weren't involved in the previous friendly against Cheltenham so yeah I don't think we'll probably
20:13see any of those but if we were to, I'd love to see Adam Wharton because he's been superb for
20:18Palace when he came in and really just shone in every game he played in really. It was a shame
20:26he didn't get a chance for England but obviously Kobe Maynard deserved his place in the midfield
20:30alongside Bening and Rice. It was a very difficult midfield to get into but I'm sure we're going to
20:35see much more of him in an England shirt going forward. But I think there'll be some big names
20:40on show for Palace because their big summer signing Daichi Kamada was on the pitch
20:45against Charlton and he performed well after his move from Lazio. Oddson-Edouard was on the pitch
20:51as well as Jordan Ayew, Tarek Mitchell, Rob Holding and Chique Di Curo all played as well so I think
20:56those players are probably ones we can expect to see against Crawley. But Mateta is away with
21:01France at the Olympics so we probably won't see him but I think there's definitely
21:06room for excitement and hopefully Crawley can really have a good test against a good Palace
21:11team at the end of the day because they ended last season on such a high upon loads of games in a row
21:17and they'll be looking to continue that this season. So I think a really good test for Crawley
21:20to see where they're at, see where the new players are at and yeah it's a game I'm really looking
21:24forward to watching. Well you can see all the latest from that game at sussexworld.co.uk
21:29forward slash sport on Saturday and yeah I hope you both enjoy it. It should be a good game.
21:33Thank you very much for joining us this week chaps. You can catch up with all the
