01:02 had captain Lewis Dunk to thank as they played out a 2-2 draw at home to Liverpool last weekend,
01:06 a result which leaves them sixth in the table before the international break. Sum that game
01:10 up for us please Darren. Yeah, it was one of those performances after the Marseilles
01:17 game. Brighton took a little while to get into their rhythm really. It was always going
01:26 to be a tough game after that but they took the lead through Simon Indinga and a really
01:33 impressive display from the young attacker. He's a player who impressed in pre-season
01:40 so he joined a while back and spent a year on loan in Belgium. He's coming to the team
01:47 this season and he's mainly been used as an impact substitute from the bench. Against
01:53 Liverpool he was in from the start and he was the man of the match basically. I think
01:59 he made the difference for Brighton. His goal that he opened the scoring for Brighton with
02:06 a really well-taken goal took the chance nice and early and got Brighton into a lead. But
02:12 then it was a bit of a mad five minutes really just towards the end. Some sloppy play. Lewis
02:18 Dunk first of all, he gave the ball away from the defence and Liverpool capitalised. Then
02:26 again it was an error from the keeper, Bart Verbruggen, gave the ball away. Pascal Gros
02:32 conceded the penalty. Liverpool were back in the game but again Brighton do make it
02:38 difficult for themselves sometimes. They're so good on the ball in possession. If they
02:44 can just cut out these errors then they're really going to be challenging at the top
02:49 end and potentially maybe a top four. But if they keep making these mistakes they're
02:56 making their lives very difficult for themselves at the moment. But when they do make the mistakes
03:01 they seem to find a way to come back into the match as they did against Marseille. They
03:08 kept going and ground Liverpool down in the end. It was Lewis Dunk who made the mistake
03:13 for the first goal. He popped up from a set-piece. Nice delivery in from Soli March who played
03:18 at left-back in place of Pervez Estupinan who's injured. Good finish from Lewis Dunk
03:24 really and a nice point and it gives them a bit of a boost going into the international
03:30 break.
03:31 Simon Odinga was on loan at Belgium last season and I followed him quite closely and
03:37 he's got a knife a goal. A famous example of a player who's gone from the Union to
03:40 Brighton Pipeline is Japanese player Kaoru Matoma. Without meaning to sabotage the pressure,
03:46 do you think Odinga has the attributes to replicate Matoma's rise and impact at the
03:50 Amex?
03:51 I do, I do. Absolutely. I think he looks like another real good find. Not only in his attacking
03:59 display but similar to Matoma, he puts in the defensive work as well. He tracks back,
04:05 he makes the tackles which you have to do in a deserby team. Especially in those positions
04:11 when you're playing wide on the flanks. You need to really graft and put the miles in.
04:18 He's a player when he gets the chance he has that extra quality as well in the attacking
04:25 areas that we spoke about.
04:27 I saw him in pre-season. He was on the tour of America and he scored a similar goal against
04:33 Brentford in pre-season where he was chasing through. He took it early. When you take the
04:40 ball early from outside of the box it catches the keepers by surprise. They weren't set.
04:44 Alisson really didn't expect the shot to come in from that angle and so soon. Even a keeper
04:51 of his quality made him look a bit silly really. It was such a great finish from Odinga. I
04:59 think there's plenty more to come from him. Like I say, he's mainly been used as an impact
05:04 sub. He's only had three starts this season and he's got three goal involvements already.
05:10 So two goals and one assist to his name from three starts. I think it bodes really well.
05:16 He's a player, again, that Brighton have just plucked from nowhere. There didn't seem to
05:20 be anybody else in the running for him. Similar to Karam Atoma, there didn't seem to be any
05:25 people interested in signing him. Brighton moved decisively. Had a year on loan in Belgium
05:30 where they go under the radar but make some really good progress, adapt to the European
05:35 football and then they unleashed him in the Premier League. He looks like another really,
05:41 really good find. So very, very promising.
05:43 Speaking of another potentially good find, fresh link from telling hostile Marseille
05:48 fans to 'ferme le bouche' or words of that effect in the Europa League last week. Midfielder
05:53 Carlos Maliba made his full Brighton debut against Liverpool. He's another fresh face
05:56 that I'm pretty certain that not many of us have heard of. But how did he get on against
06:00 Liverpool, Darren, and how has he got on so far since his move from Lille in the summer?
06:04 So yeah, as you say, arrived from Lille for just over 20 million and he's a player that
06:11 Brighton identified as a replacement for Moises Caicedo who left for Chelsea last summer for
06:17 115 million. He's introduced against Bournemouth, came on as a second half substitute against
06:27 Bournemouth in the 3-1 victory and looked pretty good. He then struggled on his full
06:31 debut against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup. De Serbi said actually afterwards that he's
06:39 not yet ready for first team football. He gave the ball away quite regularly. Tactically
06:45 he looked a little bit uncertain as well. You kind of thought, especially after De Serbi's
06:49 comments that we may not see him again for a while. He might spend some time just getting
06:55 to know the system. But then lo and behold he was thrust in against Liverpool and him
07:02 and Odinga were one of the best players on the pitch. It wasn't a really tactical game.
07:08 It wasn't one of the games where Brighton were under pressure as they were against Aston
07:12 Villa. It was a very open game. Both teams had plenty of possession and I think that
07:18 suited Bolivar's game down to the ground. He seemed to have the freedom to play, to
07:23 drive forward with the ball. In that type of game he looked really good against a very
07:30 experienced and classy Liverpool midfield that included Alexis McAllister as well, the
07:35 former Brighton player. He more than held his own against a very good Liverpool team.
07:41 He's only 19 but he looks like a player of raw talent with plenty more to come. Very
07:48 powerful, very athletic but good on the ball as well. I think he's a player that the fans
07:56 are really going to love.
07:57 Talking of McAllister quickly, it was a nice touch with De Serbi walking around with him
08:01 after the game on Saturday.
08:04 Yes, he got a really good reception McAllister and I'm glad he did as well. Sometimes the
08:11 players come back and they can be a bit of a pantomime villain but McAllister was great
08:15 for Brighton. He played such a key role in getting them into Europe so I was pleased
08:19 that the fans gave him a good reception.
08:21 They're only a World Cup winner as well, aren't they?
08:27 I'm sure Moses Caicedo will receive a similar reception.
08:31 Brighton are 6-6, they're also third in their Europa League group but they are unfortunately
08:43 out of the Carabao Cup. All things considered, how would you assess Albion's season so far?
08:51 Solid. I'd say De Serbi has performed well to get Brighton into sixth. They've won five,
09:00 lost two, drawn once. I would say that's a pretty good return considering their two
09:07 best midfield players from last season have gone. They've had a couple of injuries and
09:12 also they've had to bed in the new players as well. I think De Serbi has been not quite
09:20 certain of his best 11 at the moment, hence all the changes that have taken place. It's
09:27 been work in progress and I would say it's a solid start so far as well. The Europa League
09:34 games have taken their toll a little bit. The one against Athens was a disappointing
09:39 result in particular to lose 3-2 against Athens at home who were perceived to be the weakest
09:45 team in the group perhaps. It doesn't always work out like that but that was what the school
09:51 of thought was going into it. But again, they kind of shot themselves in the foot in that
09:56 match as well. Defensively they were all at sea. Louis Stunk wasn't available for that
10:00 one and that was a big blow. But with the draw that they got in Marseille, an amazing
10:08 occasion, amazing atmosphere for all the Brighton fans who went out there. I think that can
10:13 give them confidence to go on and say, "OK, we had a shaky spell. We didn't lose it completely.
10:19 We managed to regroup, refocus and we proved that we're good enough to compete in this
10:24 competition."
10:25 I think that draw is really going to be quite big for the rest of the season and the rest
10:33 of their Europa League campaign. So, yeah, a pretty solid start for Brighton all things
10:38 considered.
10:39 Excellent stuff. Moving quickly on to Crawley, they slipped to a second consecutive league
10:44 to defeat on Saturday going down 1-0 at home to Disney+'s Wrexham. The Welsh outfit went
10:49 down to 10 men on 66 minutes after Andy Cannon's wild challenge and Andrew Campbell. The Reds
10:53 couldn't find a way back into it. How was it on Saturday, Mark? It seems like it might
10:57 have been a bit of a circus all things considered.
11:01 Well it wasn't. It wasn't. It was a fact that it was a record elite crowd, I think it was,
11:06 for Crawley. 5,572 people there. But it was just a bit of a disappointing game in total.
11:14 I mean, it was disappointing that Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhaney weren't there so that we
11:18 didn't have that part of the circus. But I was disappointed with the way Crawley were
11:25 great until the final third and they were really disappointing. They scored 20 goals
11:30 in September in six games and now they've gone three games without scoring and they
11:34 were just really lacked in that final third. And Wrexham were disappointing in the fact
11:38 that they scored and then they sat back and just did nothing for like 70 minutes. And
11:44 it was just really disappointing in that sense. And yeah, Crawley could have won that game
11:52 and they could be higher in the league.
11:53 Excellent. Well, brilliant. Thank you very much for that. We're going to take a quick
11:56 break and when we come back, we will discuss the draw with Sutton United in the EFL Trophy.
12:03 Tuesday evening then saw the Reds play out a one-all draw at near-neighbours Sutton United
12:06 in the EFL Trophy. Sutton would eventually win 5-4 on penalties to claim a bonus point.
12:12 But where does this result leave Crawley in their quest to reach the knockout stage of
12:15 the competition? And is there an appetite to reach the knockout stage as it's kind of
12:18 viewed as a bit of a black sheep of the trophies, isn't it, the EFL Trophy, Mark?
12:23 Well, yeah, it is. But for this season, I think it is a really important competition
12:29 for Crawley because they touch wood. They've gone through the first half of the season
12:34 with one or two injuries to like Dion Conroy and Ben Gladwin, Kel and Gordon. But in previous
12:40 seasons, we've got to this stage and there's been about eight injuries to key players.
12:44 There's the squad players that haven't had the chance to get lots of minutes under their
12:48 belt. So I think Scott Lindsay views this competition and they've got the Sussex Senior
12:52 Cup as well next Tuesday at Worthing. And I think they'll see that as a real opportunity
12:58 to give all these players lots of minutes. And what was interesting, and Scott Lindsay
13:03 said it afterwards, the process that he's trying to implement, how they're playing this
13:09 game, keep the ball possession-based football attacking. Every player that played on Tuesday
13:13 night, any of those could have fitted into the first team squad, as it were, and they
13:18 would have known how to play. That's exactly how they played on Tuesday night. Again, it
13:22 was like Wrexham. They dominated the game. They dominated possession, just could not
13:26 get that sort of clear-cut chance or just that cutting edge up front. So I think, yeah,
13:32 this competition is important and they're still in the driving seat to get out of the
13:35 group. They're top on four points, Charlton and Sutton, who play each other next on three
13:41 points and then Aston Villa, I think they might have got one point or two points from
13:46 a penalty shoot-out win. So if Crawley win, they're through. But I think even if they
13:52 draw and get the bonus point, they're through as well because of Charlton and Sutton playing
13:58 each other. So, yeah, I think it's a really good, I mean, it's a stretch to think they
14:04 might get to Wembley. As we know, Crawley are one of the few professional teams never
14:08 to play at Wembley. But you've got the likes of Oxford United, one of the biggest teams
14:13 in League One, Steve Bone. But, yeah, you've got so many big clubs in there, but it depends
14:24 how important the other clubs see this competition. But if Scott Lindsay wanted to, I think he
14:29 could get them quite far in this competition with the football they're playing. They're
14:32 going to come up against sides who won't realise the kind of football Crawley are playing and
14:36 they're playing some really good stuff. They just need to add those goals to that, to possession.
14:41 Much like Brighton, unbelievably, Crawley have no games this weekend due to the international
14:44 break. The red scheduled trip to Morecambe has been postponed as the Shrimps have apparently
14:49 reported three or more international call-ups for their first team. With no game on Saturday,
14:53 Mark, I suppose now is the time to reflect on Crawley's season. How would you assess
14:57 the campaign so far?
14:59 I mean, if you look at it from before they even kicked a ball this season, it's been
15:03 a really impressive start. They're eighth in League Two, just outside the play-offs
15:08 on goal difference, two wrecks, funnily enough. It's been really impressive. Like I've just
15:14 said, the football they're playing is the best football I've ever seen. I've been covering
15:18 Crawley on and off for 20 years now. And it's by far the best football they've played. They've
15:23 got some real talent there. I mean, Liam Kelly has just been outstanding. It's a shame because
15:28 he was missing against Wrexham because of concussion. He got a head injury in the 2-0
15:33 loss at Doncaster. And obviously there's protocols now with concussion and head injuries. They
15:38 have to do seven days of clear training. I can't remember the exact rules. But yeah,
15:43 but he has been absolutely outstanding. And it just really showed. I mean, people raised
15:48 few eyebrows during the summer when they got rid of the likes of Ashley Navas and James
15:51 Tilly, etc. and then brought in 15 new players. But Scott Lindsay has got them playing fantastic
15:58 football. And it's really good to see. It's disappointing. Like I said, they scored 20
16:03 goals in six games in September. And now they've gone three games in October without scoring
16:08 a goal. So it's a little bit of a concern. They're just lacking that sort of firepower
16:14 and cutting edge up front. But with the likes of Danilo Orsi, Adam Campbell looks really
16:18 good. Clydie Lollos, when he comes on, I mean, he played a lot of when Ben Gladwin off injured,
16:23 he came on and played sort of number 10 role. And he looked really good, Clydie Lollos.
16:28 But it's just getting that final chances and scoring goals. But generally, it's been an
16:35 amazing start. And I don't think any Crawley fan, I mean, the only disappointment is that
16:40 they were joint top before last weekend. And now, well, before, yeah, before last weekend.
16:46 And now they're suddenly eighth. So they're just what could have been if they'd beaten
16:51 Wrexham, which they should have done. I don't think anyone can say they deserve to beat
16:55 Doncaster. But if they'd beaten Wrexham, they would have still been up there in the mix
17:00 and it would have been sort of in dreamland for the Reds fans. But eighth is still beyond
17:04 what a lot of people predicted and expected for Crawley. So a really good start. If they
17:09 can avoid injuries, Ben Gladwin limped off with a worrying looking injury on Saturday.
17:15 But yeah, they should stay around there. And if they can be in the same similar position
17:21 come April, then playoffs is not a dream at all. I think they could be there.
17:26 Well, fingers crossed. We'll have to wait and see, won't we? This Saturday, C3 Sussex
17:31 clubs compete for a lucrative place in the first round proper of the FA Cup. Worthing
17:35 face National League South rivals Bath City in the fourth qualifying round, while Isthmian
17:39 Premier pair Horsham and Lewis take on National League opponents Dorking, Wanderers and Aldershot
17:43 Town respectively. Steve Bone, which of our sides do you think is the best chance of reaching
17:47 the first round proper? And what would it mean for these clubs to be in the hat for
17:50 Monday's draw?
17:51 You would have to say that of the three, Worthing have the best chance. They're playing a team
17:58 from their own division, their own to Bath City. Not an easy game at all, but they've
18:02 got a fair chance of getting through there. Whereas our other two sides are both up against
18:09 National League opposition. So Lewis got a tough trip to Aldershot, who are currently
18:14 ninth in the National League Premier. That's going to be difficult for them. Again, not
18:18 impossible. It's the FA Cup and these sort of games don't always turn out with the form
18:22 book. Horsham are at home to Dorking. And again, you'd probably say, if you were judging
18:29 Horsham or Lewis as to which of those has got the best chance, you'd probably say Horsham.
18:33 Horsham are very strong at home. They've beaten National League opposition at home before,
18:38 so not without a chance. But probably if one of the three is going to go through, you would
18:43 say Worthing are the most likely.
18:46 In terms of what it means, it's massive really, because the first round, and we get the draw
18:51 for the first round on Monday afternoon, the first round is when all the League One and
18:54 League Two clubs come in. So you could be looking at a tie against Pompey, Oxford United
19:01 before Mark Dunford says, 'I've missed them out', Charlton, Bolton. There's a lot of big
19:07 sides in League One. And the prize money aspect is worth looking at too, because if you win
19:15 this weekend in the fourth qualifying round, you get a £9,000 prize pot, which is pretty
19:19 good. If you get through to the first round and win in the first round, £41,000. So it's
19:25 a big leap up. And to any of those three clubs, that's a big boost to the budget for now and
19:32 for the future. So lots to play for on Saturday, and let's hope all three can get through.
19:37 But if not, certainly one of them.
19:38 I'm going to Horsham Dorkin on Saturday, and apparently FA rules dictate that you're not
19:43 allowed to have a beer in view of the pitch, which I don't understand. Is that an FA thing
19:47 that they've decided to do?
19:51 I think it's been a rule for a little while. There's different rules about what you can
19:57 do in non-league rounds at FA competition games. It seems a little bit extreme, doesn't
20:04 it? It seems to be making a mountain out of a molehill, really. But you'll just have to
20:08 have your beer either before you go or in the clubhouse.
20:12 Matt, you can have fun without drinking, you know that.
20:14 No, you can't.
20:15 Wasn't there a Horsham player that celebrated a goal down in a pint of beer?
20:22 Yes, Terry Dodds. Yeah, that was quite a few years ago now.
20:27 Yeah, I remember seeing it on the back page, I think.
20:29 But yeah, no, best of luck to all our sides.
20:31 It'll be a great occasion, though, for all three.
20:33 It'll be a great occasion, yeah.
20:35 Horsham is a sellout, so also a nice little money spinner there for them. Very quickly,
20:40 Steve, you also had the FA Trophy draw on Monday. Horsham, Bogner and Lewis were in
20:44 the draw. Who have they got and how will they get on, Joren?
20:47 Yes, so we've got four teams in the next round of the Trophy, which is the first round proper.
20:52 Bogner are at home to Gosport. That's a team from the same level as them from Step 3, so
20:58 they have a chance. Horsham are away to Lark Hall Athletic, who I must confess I don't
21:02 know much about, but Horsham are in good form, so not without a chance. Lewis go to Dulwich
21:07 Hamlet, who are in the same league as them. And don't forget Whitehawk, they're in as
21:12 well. They're away to Kingstonian. We still have Eastbourne Borough and Worthing to come
21:18 as well in the Trophy, so six sides really still in the Trophy. Lots of chances to get
21:24 through and it'd be nice to think that one of them could go all the way.
21:27 Very, very quickly, we'll have a stroll down Steve Bones' score prediction corner. Steve,
21:31 England play Australia in a friendly at Wembley on Friday. Considering the conditions,
21:34 do you reckon they should have a better outline?
21:36 Yeah, I'd take England to win by about seven wickets in that one.
21:40 It's England playing Australia at football, are they?
21:45 They are and we're probably at the beginning of it.
21:48 It seems to be a waste of everybody's time really. I don't really see the point,
21:51 but I'll go for a 3-1 win for England in that one, I think.
21:55 Mark, very quickly, what do you reckon?
21:57 Two-nil England, it'll be dull.
22:01 Deren?
22:01 Yeah, I'll probably go with Mark, something along that. Two-nil, three-one,
22:07 something along those lines, I think.
22:09 And then England have got Italy in a Euro 2020 qualifier on Tuesday.
22:13 Is that the most nailed-on nil-nil draw in the history of football ever?
22:16 Yeah, I think so. That's what I was going to predict.
22:20 Deren?
22:22 Yeah, I'll be interested to see if Lewis Dunne plays in that one. Obviously,
22:26 he had a great game against Scotland in the previous international camp.
22:31 So, yeah, I think England will win that as well. I think Italy, a bit for the Mancini's,
22:37 just gone as needs Saudi Arabia. Two-nil England, I think.
22:41 And Steve, finally, what do you reckon?
22:43 I'm going to go for ex-Bognor defender Lewis Dunne to get a start
22:47 and to score the winner in a 2-1 England win. Remember where you heard it first.
22:53 Absolutely. And as you can see, we're all cuckahoop and we look forward to it. No,
22:56 we don't. Only joking. Anyway, thank you very much for joining us, chaps.
