00:49So, it was another Lewis Duncombe goal and a hat-trick from former Seagull Chris Wood
00:54to help Forest continue their push for the Champions League. That was quite something,
00:59wasn't it Darren? Can you sum that performance up for us? It looked like Albion were all
01:03over the place in that game.
01:05Well, quite, yeah. It's very difficult to sum that one up. I spoke to some of the Brighton
01:12fans as we were on the way back down the M1 and stopped off at some of the service stations
01:16and the first thing they mentioned was that they got up early, it was a 12 o'clock kick-off
01:22and it went all that way and it was such a disappointing result. They're also quick
01:28to say though that they've been to their regular away supporters and they've had some great
01:33away days this season. So, they hope it was a blip. But the main talking point was the
01:39team line-up and the formation that he went with. It was pretty much like a 4-1-5 formation.
01:47He had quite a few injuries to his midfielders. He actually said afterwards that there wasn't
01:52one midfielder in the whole team that could play for 90 minutes. So, he put Jack Hinshelwood,
01:59who'd just come back from, I think he was out for 10 games or something with a knee
02:03injury and he was the lone midfielder in front of this defence. Literally, his first start
02:10back for 10 days and he was tasked with this. He was set up to fail in a way. It was a tough
02:19first half for him. He got booked early on and he had to tread really carefully. Then
02:25it was Matoma on the left, Minte on the right, Rutter, Pedro and then Welbeck up front as
02:32well. So, it was those front five and unless you control the possession, you're really
02:39going to be up against it. They just didn't do enough with the ball. They weren't good
02:43enough with the ball. They didn't keep the ball well and Forrest just picked them off.
02:47They looked as though they were just going to steamroll through them at every opportunity.
02:51It could have been 10 really. It could have been more.
02:57Then he did change it at half-time. Two midfielders, Matt O'Reilly and Diego Gomez, came on at
03:02half-time. By then, the confidence just looked so low. Forrest were playing really well.
03:10It was quite ruthless really. It was a tough, tough watch if you're an Albion fan.
03:18The press conference was this morning. Herzela said he hopes the players will look at that
03:22and think this can be a turning point in my career. This is what I need to do. Probably
03:28Herzela will look at that himself as well. He can learn a lot from that as well. His
03:32tactics and how he set his team up for that match as well. So, yes, much to cut through
03:43for that.
03:44I enjoyed the story about the pub in Nottingham that said they would give a free pint every
03:49time Forrest scored.
03:50I saw that.
03:51The club went in and gave him a free t-shirt and some free tickets and everything, didn't
03:57they? So, yes, lovely story. I enjoyed that.
04:01There's two wins in the last 12 for Brighton now, Sam. It's perhaps too early to say he's
04:05under pressure but surely he's under a lot of scrutiny now, isn't he?
04:09Yes, he certainly is. I think it's always going to be a difficult one after you have
04:15such a heavy defeat. There's going to be people calling for answers and some kind of reason
04:21for that happening. Obviously, they'll look to blame someone at the end of the day. I
04:26read an opinion piece that was posted and I think someone basically said Hertsdale was
04:31completely at fault for the first half and the players were at fault for the second half.
04:35I think it was just a little bit bizarre, as Darius mentioned, the way that he set up
04:39with Hinchwood as that loam and fielder. It's one thing starting that way. It's another
04:45thing they're not changing it after you've conceded a couple of goals. So, they're not
04:49reacting to do something about it. It's a little bit concerning. As he's watching the
04:54team fall apart, there were shades of that Chelsea game at Stamford Bridge earlier in
04:59the season where Chelsea, on another day, could have scored 10 for the chances they
05:03had. It's a little bit like that but Forest were just more clinical than Chelsea were
05:07on that day. I think it's definitely a concern that that can happen, that Brighton can be
05:16so badly beaten. Obviously, Hertsdale needs time to fix these issues. He's still a very
05:23young coach and he's going to hopefully learn from these games and that will help his
05:27development as a manager. I still think the results that he's had so early in his career,
05:32he's earned the right to at least finish the season. I think it is really unfair to say
05:37that he should lose his job already. Some of the results he's had against big teams,
05:41including City, Arsenal, Man United and even good performances against Liverpool as well.
05:46I feel like it would be really harsh to sack him at this stage after that performance,
05:52despite it being a really bad one, obviously. It will be important to see a good reaction
05:57from Brighton against the two games against Chelsea coming up.
06:00What a wonderful segue. You've done this before. Brighton now face Chelsea in the FA Cup
06:07and then in the league the following week. One of those weird coincidences where they
06:11have to play them twice in a week because of the cup draw. How important are these two games?
06:16As Sam said, it does increase the scrutiny on Hersella after those matches. I don't really
06:23like it when there are games in quick succession, when they have to play the same team twice.
06:29It's just the way it's worked out. Obviously, Chelsea and I guess things have moved on a
06:35little bit from when there was that intense rivalry when Potter left to Chelsea. But it
06:41still moves on a little bit with Brighton fans. Obviously, there's still Caicedo there,
06:48there's Kukerea still at Chelsea. It would be interesting to see if Sanchez, who struggled
06:54in goal for Chelsea in the last few matches, I think he was dropped for the game against West
06:59Ham, whether he comes back into the FA Cup team as well. So, there's still quite a connection
07:04between the two clubs. But from Brighton's perspective, they had a really bad performance
07:10at Chelsea against Stamford Bridge when Cole Palmer just ran right against... He had so much
07:16space against Brighton. Brighton were playing this crazy high line which was just a bit of a
07:25wake-up call and a disaster. Brighton had been a little bit more settled. They'd still been far
07:29too leaky in the Premier League this season. But it just looked as though they were getting
07:34back on track a little bit before this Nottingham Forest result. So, yeah, much is going to depend
07:41on how they bounce back from that and how much confidence it's taken from them. The main thing
07:45that Hersella was asking for was to have that intensity, once that intensity back into the
07:51line-up. So, that's going to be key, just to see how much confidence that's taken out of Brighton.
07:58Indeed, yeah. And the transfer window closed on Monday. So, Reverend Ferguson moved
08:02on loan to West Ham, while Greece striker Stephanos Zimmas has signed for around £22 million.
08:08He will complete his loan at FC Nuremberg and then team up with Hersella's team in the summer.
08:13What did you make of all that, Sam?
08:15Yeah, it's a strange situation, isn't it? So, you mentioned, obviously, Zimmas has signed
08:19a contract that runs until June 2030. But he'll remain on loan at FC Nuremberg for the second
08:25half of the season and team up with the Seagulls in the summer. And by then, Brighton will have a
08:29chance to see how Ferguson has performed at West Ham and reassess their striking options going
08:34forward. The Republic of Ireland international is still just 20 years old and his contract is
08:39obviously until June 2029. And it does leave Albion in a very strong position and obviously
08:44with a number of attacking options to assess. Obviously, Welbeck has been in the form of his
08:51career this season and you wonder kind of how long that will continue and if Age will start
08:56to catch up with him a little bit going forward. And obviously, you've still got Jal Pedro,
09:00Jorginho, Rutter. So, they're able to cover a lot of bases going forward this season.
09:05But you just do wonder next season if Jal Pedro, for example, will still be at the club.
09:10So, time will tell if obviously some big names coming for him with some big bids and that kind
09:15of thing. But Zimmas was a player very much in demand and was even linked with the move to
09:19Liverpool before opting for Brighton. And the same actually happened with Ferguson in 2021.
09:24He was given the opportunity to go to Anfield but he chose Albion due to the chances for
09:29increased game time. But on Zimmas, Hertzler basically said he's an out-and-out centre
09:35forward with natural ability to score goals. I'm absolutely delighted to have signed him.
09:39He will join up in the summer ahead of next season and he's really looking forward to working with
09:43him and feels he has a very exciting future. So, yeah, an exciting signing for Brighton,
09:47another long-term one and hopefully he can hit the ground running when he eventually does join
09:52up with the club. And I hope Ferguson also has a successful loan spell at West Ham as well,
09:58obviously under his former boss, Braydon Potter. So, yeah, fingers crossed he does well and Brighton
10:04can have a really strong position going forward next season.
10:10Absolutely. And before we go for a break, what were the other key deals in the transfer window,
10:14Kara Moussaoui stayed while Aaron Kashin and Diogo Gomes arrived, good deals for Brighton?
10:21Yeah, I think so. Yeah, very, very sort of solid sort of transfer window. I didn't expect
10:25too much business after the 200 million they spent last summer. And a lot of those players
10:30for various reasons haven't been able to produce their best yet. So we've still got the best to
10:36come from the summer arrivals. But Aaron Kashin came in from Derby for an initial fee of around
10:42about nine million. I think there's a few add-ons there, which could take it up to about 12 million
10:47in total. So he signed on until June 2030. And I think the need for a defender was highlighted.
10:55You can't just take it from that one game, but they have struggled this season defensively and
11:00he looks a good solid addition. He impressed in League One, he's impressed in the Championship
11:05and Brighton are very confident at the age of 23. He's now ready to step up to the Premier
11:12League. Diego Gomes, obviously, he's already been there. Well, he came early in the window,
11:18January the 1st. So he made his debut in the win at Manchester United as a late substitute,
11:23played the second half at Nottingham Forest. So yeah, he could be a good addition as well.
11:29And Keeping Karamatoma, you know, he's my favourite player at Brighton, to be honest.
11:35I love watching him play. I think he's just such a classy addition on the attacking
11:39player. But I was getting concerned when those bids kept seem to be going
11:43higher and higher. I thought Brighton may cash in on it. But I think he wanted to stay,
11:50he wanted to play in the Premier League and one day compete in the Champions League.
11:54I don't think a move to Saudi suited anybody at this stage. The other ones,
12:00McConville, he went to Norwich for a million. Ed Turns, he's also left. Yacob Moda went to
12:07Feyenoord. Valentin Barco, he completed a loan to Strasbourg after he struggled in
12:13Seville in the early part of the season. That's an obligation to buy as well.
12:18And the other one, Brighton were pushing to sign Tommy Watson from Sunderland.
12:22They bid around about 10 million but couldn't get that one over the line in time before deadline.
12:27And they might revisit that in the summer.
12:30Yeah, brilliant. Right, well, can I have a short break now? And Darren,
12:34I'm going to seamlessly turn into Darren as he asks us questions about Crawley Town.
12:41Well, welcome back to part two. And Crawley Town faced League One moneymen Wrexham and were
12:46cruelly robbed of a point with the last kick of the game. Tell us what happened with that
12:50from last weekend, Mark. Oh, it was so gutting. So, Crawley played really well throughout the
12:56whole game. They let in an early goal, a little bit of lattice or just Wrexham caught Crawley
13:01basically. They opened them up. Matty James scored quite a good goal. Then Crawley dominated for the
13:07rest of the game. Wrexham just sat back, let Crawley play, but they couldn't quite score.
13:12And then in the last minute of normal, in the 90 minutes, Bradley Ibrahim, I urge anyone to
13:19watch it if they haven't seen it, an absolute screamer from about 25 yards of volley into the
13:25top corner. Yeah. And everybody thought, oh, brilliant. There's a well-deserved point.
13:30Crawley probably deserves to win it in terms of possession, chances, all the other stats.
13:35But then at the other end, seemingly at first, it looked like Elliot Lee unmarked in the box,
13:40headed home. And you just think, oh, Crawley switched off after they thought they'd got a
13:44point. But then when you look at the replays and the anger from everybody around who was there,
13:50um, you could see in the, um, in the buildup, Elliot Lee literally grabs Jeremy Kelly by his
13:56shirt, pulls him to the ground to get him out of the way because Kelly was blocking his run.
14:00And he just walked in and nutted it in there, but the referee didn't see it. The, um, yeah,
14:05nobody saw it apart, well, apart from everybody else, but the people that mattered didn't see it.
14:10Yeah. And it was, it was so frustrating because Crawley had played so well and
14:15Rob Elliott, I mean, what was that the game? But I couldn't, I had to go out in the evening,
14:18so I couldn't stay for too long for the press. But Rob Elliott's normally quite quick.
14:21He was in with the referee for about 20 minutes after the game,
14:24just trying to find out what's going on. Why, how, how does that happen?
14:28Because when you watch it back, it's such an obvious foul. It's just,
14:33how does nobody see that kind of thing? I mean, if that was VAR, it would have been ruled out.
14:37There's no, absolutely no doubt about it. Um, but there's not, so they just have to,
14:42yeah, they have to just go over that and move on. But it's not an easy one. I mean,
14:46Rob Elliott said after the game, these things can't happen because when, when you're Wrexham
14:52and if you draw that game or lose that game, it doesn't really matter. Crawley,
14:57they're fighting for their lives at the moment and, um, just little things are not going their
15:02way. They're dominating games, but they just can't get over their line in games. And some
15:05of it's their own fault. But when you have things like this, it's just so frustrating for them.
15:09Yeah. Yeah. And it's Wrexham though, they're looking for their third straight promotion,
15:14and what did you make of them, Mark? Do they deserve to go up to the championship?
15:19No, no. Honestly, I mean, I know, uh, they, they obviously, they get so much publicity
15:27and they've spent a lot of money. They got, I mean, on Saturday, uh, well on Friday, I think
15:32it was on, uh, just before the weekend, they bought Trey Rodriguez, who's got an England cap
15:36and has played for Burnley and played up in Southampton as well. He's played for,
15:40um, and they bought Sam Smith as well. He's been scoring for fun for Reading this year. And, um,
15:47yeah, and they started and then they brought off the bench. They brought Jack Marriott, Elliot Lee,
15:53um, Stephen Fletcher, Stephen Fletcher, who scored goals for fun for lots of teams and that.
15:57And you just look at that squad and you just think, wow, but the football they play,
16:01if I have to watch that football team every week, I'd be so frustrated. It was they, but the problem
16:07is they know what to do to win a game. And that's exactly what they did on the, they used the dark
16:12arts like Elliot Lee proved with his winner. Um, but they defend and they defend very well. I've
16:17not taken anything away, how organized they are, but my God, it's hard to watch. It was just
16:22yet dreadful. But, and on the other hand, you've got Crawley who are brilliant to watch at times,
16:28but they're in the bottom for rex and a third. So I suppose if you're a fan,
16:33all you want to do is see your team win and that's what they're doing.
16:35But I wouldn't want to pay a season ticket to go and watch rex and every week if they're going to
16:39play like that. No, quite. And, and as, as discussed Monday was the transfer deadline day. Um,
16:47who were the ins and outs for Crawley Town, Sam, and how would you sum up the window for the Reds
16:52and what happened with the Armando Quintanera? Yeah, it was a bit of a strange one. Um,
16:58with Crawley's transfer window, really, I think fans were disappointed. I think with the,
17:03with the business that was done, I think there was probably not enough signings.
17:06When you look at Crawley's position, um, and there's fans wanting to please,
17:10and I think Robert admitted himself, he would like to have got a couple of more players in,
17:14um, in January. Um, but he did say he's happy with where the squad is,
17:17um, following deadline day. Um, but it was a relatively quiet one as I mentioned. So
17:21Rafiq Khalil, uh, went to Dagenham on the permanent deal. Um, Canadian midfielder,
17:26Liam Fraser has come in. Uh, you mentioned obviously Junior Quintanera staying, um,
17:31Matt Cox and Kamari Doyle coming in on loan and Roy Feeley joining Favaro. Um, and with Ben
17:37Ratcliffe joining at the start of the window, Elliot at least knows now where he stands for
17:41the rest of the season. And obviously he can assess what he has and go from there.
17:46Um, and in the lead up to the Bolton game, he said the lads we've got in have been absolutely
17:49brilliant. I think we'd have liked to have added a couple more and obviously, um, put
17:53players forward that he would like, um, to sign and obviously recommended to the owners,
17:58obviously that hasn't probably come to fruition. Uh, but he did say it's not as simple as that.
18:03And obviously, um, he thinks that Evan Smith and Preston Johnson worked hard to try and get the,
18:07get the right bodies in. Um, but the biggest thing is that the squad is here and they've
18:12shown the quality and they've just go out and improve their worth obviously in the upcoming
18:16games. And it's important that they do start to get some, some points on the board. Um,
18:20and obviously as Mark's mentioned, extremely unlucky not to get at least a point against
18:24Wrexham and that Shambhala decision at the end cost them dear. So hopefully they can bounce back
18:28from that. Um, but on junior returner, um, he did look set to move to Argentinian side club
18:34Atletico Talares, uh, before the deadline, it was a bit of an unusual one because there was reports
18:38that he'd actually traveled to complete the move. Um, but it didn't go ahead and there was all sorts
18:43of reports that the paperwork had failed to go through. Um, but Crawley town actually issued a
18:49statement to deny that and said there was no agreement in place. Um, and the reports of the
18:54issue of the paperwork were false. Um, so it's a strange one, a really strange one.
18:58Yeah. Well, he traveled out there. It was very odd. Yeah. It's a deal hasn't been done
19:04kind of thing. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And Rob Elliott said he's flown halfway across the world in the
19:08last week, but he's dealt with it really well. Um, he's really mature about the situation,
19:13which is good to hear. Uh, cause the last thing you want is one of your star players to,
19:17to be disappointed about the move and then kind of just to switch off. If it doesn't seem like
19:21he's done that. Um, so fingers crossed, he can knuckle down again at Crawley cause he's such
19:26an important player. Um, and from the comments that Rob Elliott has been making, I think
19:30signs are positive that he will come back straight into the Crawley team and pick up where he left
19:34off. And I think Rob Elliott did admit himself. It is a shame for the player that obviously he
19:39didn't get this move as it would have been a great opportunity for him. Um, but for Crawley
19:42town point of view, it's, it's great that he's staying in the club. So that's one real positive
19:45from the January transfer window.
19:47Yeah. Yeah. It makes Tommy Watson's movies. Cause apparently he drove down from Sunderland
19:52to Brighton, but that seems quite tame now from Sunderland to Brighton all the way to Argentina.
20:00Yeah. But there was a deal announced for, um, uh, for, for Crawley yesterday as well.
20:04Wasn't there, wasn't there Mark?
20:06Yeah. Yeah. Just touch on that quickly. Um, Jack Rowles, um, the midfielder he's gone,
20:10gone to Rob Elliott's old side Gateshead on loan for the remainder of the season. He's, um,
20:14he's been around since 2023 Jack roles. Um, and he's one of those players who's
20:20sort of just played a bit part where he's coming as a sub only a few league starts,
20:25but it's always played in the AFL trophy and the Caravel cup. And then he, um, I think Sam
20:30was there the night where I gained Swindon earlier in the season when he scored an absolute screamer
20:34from, uh, 25 yards, 30 yards out. Um, he's capable of that. Um, but he's obviously not
20:39part of Rob Elliott's plans for the rest of the season. Hopefully this deal will work out for
20:43Jack roles and he'll get some good game time, but he's a lovely bloke Jack as well. And, um,
20:48yeah, he, and he's, he's, he's got the potential to be a good player, but, um,
20:52just hasn't worked out under Rob Elliott by the looks of it.
20:55Yeah. Yeah. The Reds have two games this week with a trip to Bolton on Saturday
21:00and then home to Stevenage on Tuesday. How'd you see these going?
21:04It's going to be tough. Um, any trip to Bolton, Bolton got a new manager, Stephen Schumacher,
21:09um, uh, did so well at Plymouth as manager. Um, he's taken over the reins there. So it's his
21:14first game in charge and Rob Elliott said today, it's always difficult when you're playing a team
21:18who've got a new manager because you get the new manager bounce. You think it's going to be quite
21:22an intense atmosphere up there, obviously a big club, former Premier League side. Um, but, um,
21:27speaking to Rob Elliott last week, he really liked Stevenage and that's going to be a tough game as
21:31well. But after Stevenage, they've got Wickham at home who are pushing for promotion and then
21:36they've got Wigan at home and two of those games are their two games in hand. So in fact,
21:41the sort of next sort of 15 days are quite, quite a pivotal period for Crawley. They've, um, the two
21:48games in hand of the two that both Tuesday nights teams have got to travel to them. So you'd like
21:53to think fans are really going to get behind and they're going to be great occasions and, um,
21:57hopefully they can, uh, but yeah, get six, six, nine, seven points would be good out of these
22:03next three games, I think if they could get them. Yeah. Well, here's hoping, but, um, we move on to
22:08the, uh, to the score predictions. So, uh, we'll start with Brighton and Chelsea in the FA Cup,
22:13eight o'clock kickoff, Sam, you're going to be heading along to that one. What do you,
22:16what do you think for that one? Yeah, real difficult ones, difficult ones are called
22:20Chelsea not in the best of form, uh, themselves and Brighton will be looking to, to bounce back,
22:25uh, after that, after that real, um, horror show at Forest. So I think I'm going to go with, uh,
22:33two, one Brighton. I'll be confident. Yeah. Mark, how'd you see that one?
22:38Uh, I think in normal time, it's going to be a high scoring draw and they go free all in normal
22:43time. And then it doesn't go, it doesn't go to replays this round icing or anything. Does it?
22:50So yeah, no, I think Brian, I went out on penalties. Let's be positive in that sense.
22:55Yeah. It's such a hard one to call it. You know, you don't know which, which teams either
22:59side's going to move out. And, um, yeah, but, uh, I'm going to go with it. I'm going to go
23:03with a two, one for, for Brighton. Um, as moving on Bolton, uh, at home against Crawley.
23:12Oh, it's a, it's a tough old trip, but new manager could play in Crawley's hands for Bowen.
23:16They might be a little bit trying to work out what the new manager wants. And then Crawley
23:20have been playing my last two games. I beat Mansfield away.
23:24I'm lucky to draw a loss against Wrexham where they were absolutely brilliant. So I'm going to
23:28go, I'm going to go for a positive draw my one all. Yeah. I was going to say, I was going to
23:33go for a one, one all there as well. What do you think, Seth? Not as optimistic. Oh no Sam,
23:38don't do it. Don't do it. No, I think Bolton, Bolton are obviously a huge club, um, looking to
23:45get into the playoffs. Yeah. Just, just, uh, just behind playoffs and goal difference at the moment.
23:49So I feel like they'll be really gunning for a big win and Crawley will struggle,
23:53but I think it'll be, I think it'll be close, but a two, one defeat for Crawley I think.
23:57JJ Okocha and Kevin Davis to score for Bolton. Yeah.
24:03Yeah. And Crawley versus Stevenage Mark.
24:06Oh, Crawley going to win that one. I mean, like I said, Robert, it really rates Stevenage. He
24:10thinks they're a really good side and should be higher and will be higher by the end of the season,
24:14but I'm going to go for a two nil Crawley win.
24:17Two nil Crawley win. Yeah. I think Crawley definitely need a win there. I'm going to go
24:21for a one nil. Sam, is this, do you think they're going to sneak a victory there?
24:25Yeah, I was going to go, I was going to go for one nil as well, actually. I think it'd be an edgy,
24:28an edgy affair, but they'll, they'll nick a goal and get a one nil win.
