00:00My Outro For My 20th Birthday
00:30Hello and welcome to Latest TV News, I'm Sam Morton, a reporter for Sussex World and
00:37later in the show we will be talking about Brighton Hove Albion's pre-season tour of
00:40Japan and we will be looking ahead to their upcoming friendly matches in the UK. We will
00:44also be discussing the latest goings on in the transfer market with two key Albion players
00:49linked with moves away.
00:51First here are the top stories from across Sussex this week.
00:54Magic Mushrooms were among a number of illegal drugs seized by police in raids across East
00:59Sussex. Sussex Police, alongside officers from Merseyside Police's Project Medusa team,
01:04said it carried out a number of county-line drug warrants in the county. Three people
01:08were arrested, police said. On July 23rd, 24th and 25th, officers carried out warrants
01:14and searches across Brighton and Hastings aimed at disrupting the supply of illegal
01:19drugs ahead of Brighton Pride which takes place between August 3rd and 4th, as well
01:24as other events taking place across the busy summer period.
01:28Merseyside Police's Medusa team, introduced in 2019 to tackle county-line drug dealing
01:32and criminal exploitation of young people and vulnerable adults, regularly deployed
01:36to other force areas to target criminality. On Tuesday, July 23rd, a warrant was executed
01:42in the Brighton area which led to the arrest of a 29-year-old man from Brighton on suspicion
01:46of being concerned in the supply of Class B drugs. On Wednesday, July 24th, searches
01:52took place in the Brighton and Saltdean areas. A 36-year-old man from Brighton was arrested
01:57on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of Class A and Class B drugs. Officers seized
02:02Magic Mushrooms, Cannabis, Cannabis Edibles and Cannabis Vapes. On Thursday, July 25th,
02:08officers searching the Hastings area arrested a 16-year-old local boy on suspicion of being
02:12concerned in the supply of Class B drugs. Cannabis and Vapes were seized by officers.
02:17All three have been released on bail, pending further enquiries.
02:21A science centre in Hersmansoo is on the search for new premises after decades in its current
02:26home. The Observatory Science Centre said it needs to leave its premises before the
02:30end of 2026 due to the building's landlord not renewing the lease. Abbey Rumbold, interim
02:36CEO, said,
02:37We will be very sad to leave the Observatory, which has been our home for the past 30 years.
02:41But we are very excited at the prospect of finding a new location for our many spectacular
02:45interactive science exhibits. The charitable organisation has operated from the Grade II
02:51listed building since 1995 and said profit from its contract work is invested into the
02:56historic site.
02:57Councillors have suspended the licence of a Hastings convenience store which allegedly
03:01sold alcohol to children. On Tuesday, July 30th, a Hastings Borough Council licensing
03:06panel held a hearing to review the premises licence of a convenience store at 7-8 Harrell
03:11Place. The hearing had been called in response to an application from East Sussex Trading
03:16Standards which alleged the store had been involved in the sale of alcohol to those under
03:20the age of 18. In their application, Trading Standards officers said two 14-year-old girls
03:26had allegedly been able to purchase three bottles of vodka from the store on 4 November
03:312023. One of these girls later became ill and was admitted to hospital, the application
03:36said.
03:37A shop in Eastbourne has announced that it will close after 40 years in the town. Eastbourne
03:41Framing Centre, a picture framing shop in Terminus Road, announced it would close down
03:46on August 2nd. A spokesperson for the shop said,
03:48It is with deep sadness that we are closing down. We are unable to frame anything further
03:52but if you have something with us for framing we will be in touch.
03:56We are here until August 2nd for all framing collections and a stock sale. It has been
04:00an honour and delight to have been on Eastbourne High Street for close to 40 years. The business
04:05was supported by two experts and dedicated framers for that whole time, who gave a lot
04:09of hours and Christmases to make everyone's frames.
04:12Finally, Brighton Pier has been named as having the best seaside arcade, according to a new
04:17study. Brighton Pier Arcade has solidified its reputation as the premier seaside arcade
04:22in the UK, earning the top spot in a recent study.
04:25The iconic arcade, located in the vibrant city of Brighton, boasts a Google Reviews
04:30score of 4.4. It also attracts an average of 27,100 searches monthly, showcasing its
04:36immense popularity among visitors.
04:39Stay tuned for the Goldmouth Action Podcast.
04:47Welcome to another episode of the Goldmouth Action Podcast, where we take a look at all
04:56the latest goings on at Brighton & Hove, Albion and Crawley Town. I'm Matt Powell and I'm
05:00joined by Brighton writers Derren Howard and Henry Bryant and Sam Morton, who covers both
05:04Albion and Crawley Town.
05:06Brighton ended their two-game tour of Japan with an excellent win, beating J-League outfit
05:10Tokyo Verde 4-2 on Sunday. We'll pick over the bones of Albion's victory and their tour
05:15of Japan. Plus, we'll bring you all the latest news from Crawley Town. You can read all the
05:19stories we are talking about with videos and pictures online at sussexworld.co.uk forward
05:23slash sport, and you can check out other great videos on shotstv.com and Freeview channel
05:28276. You may also be watching on later TV, so thank you very much for tuning in.
05:33But as mentioned at the top of the podcast, goals from Jan-Paul Van Hecke, Jankuba Minte,
05:37Simon Odingra and Jeremy Sarmiento fired Brighton to victory over Tokyo Verde in their final
05:42match in Japan. A good win, Derren. What were the main takeaways from the game?
05:47Yeah, I just think it was another good, another good, reasonable performance. They were a
05:52little bit open in defensive areas at times, but yeah, there's still very much early days
05:58under Fabian Herzeler. It's obviously work in progress pre-season as well, players returning
06:05to fitness and just getting used to each other's ways, really getting used to what the manager
06:10wants and the manager still getting used to the players as well. But yeah, it was a
06:15good performance, very humid, very humid conditions. And it was more of a test than the first game.
06:20I think Tokyo Verde looked pretty good, actually. They were very lively. They looked really
06:25fit as well. And they attacked quite well with pace as well. So there was lots of defending
06:32for Brighton to do, some of which were probably a little bit of cause for concern. But once
06:37they get the main players back, once you get the Lewis Dunks back and Van Hecht played
06:42for half the game, looked very good again as well. But once you get them all fit and
06:47firing, you'd think Brighton will be a bit more solid than what they showed against Tokyo
06:52Verde. But in attacking areas, I think they really impressed once again as well. Minter,
06:59who they brought from Newcastle for 30 odd million, he plays on the right flank and he's
07:04a real threat. He loves to receive the ball. He's got every trick in the book. And more
07:10importantly, he can finish as well. When he gets in that position, he's calm and he's
07:16ruthless in front of goals. So it's like I mentioned previously, it's only pre-season,
07:22but you shouldn't get too excited about a player in pre-season. But he does look very
07:27good and he had such a good season with Feyenoord last year as well. So he's definitely one
07:32to watch out for. Koza Dubri as well, he came off the bench, didn't have quite the
07:37impact he had against Kashima Antlers in the first game of the tour. But once again, you
07:43can just see that he's a class player as well. Technically excellent, the way he receives
07:47the ball, always under control. And yeah, he just looks the business as well. So yeah,
07:56plenty to look forward to. So yeah, overall, a good trip to Japan.
08:02Deron's mentioned a few names there, Henry, but who stood out for Albion against Tokyo
08:06Verdean? I know that obviously we don't want to get ahead of ourselves, but that minter
08:09does look quality. He does look very good.
08:12No, he really does look the business. Just echoing Deron there, another goal for him
08:17and he ended up scoring two goals in two games in the Japan pre-season friendlies that we
08:23did. He's really making a mark in the team, showing off his pace and his skill. A lot
08:29of fans have already been taking to social media as well and thanking Newcastle for
08:33the player. He's a player that was worth a bit of money, especially for Albion's spending.
08:41They normally maybe spend a little bit less than that with the history that we've seen
08:45and then normally get a bit more value in the player with a few seasons. But it looks
08:50like we've maybe gone that step further now with the likes of Koizumi Dobery and also
08:57Yukuba Minta with some signings that are already ready to go. I feel like with the likes of
09:04Boliva for example, maybe Barca as well, you've got those sort of players that might have
09:09needed that season previous just to sort of get that confidence going. But with these
09:13two signings, it really looks like we're going to see them hit the ground running properly
09:17with a lot of confidence and a lot about them straight away in the Premier League. As Deron
09:23mentioned as well, Jean-Paul van Geck has got this new confidence that we saw near the
09:29end of the season, I thought, but he's doing really, really well. He's gone from a boy
09:35to a well-established defender and it seems like maybe Lewis Dunk's calmness has rubbed
09:43off on him and he seems like a real leader for the team now. It's really nice to see.
09:48One final mention would have to be Barca. I thought that he's gaining confidence as
09:52well in just the way that he's receiving the ball, the way he's on the ball and doesn't
09:57look as timid and as shy as we've seen in previous games. If we go back to a real big
10:02test for him that he had against Manchester City when Albion were at home in the Amex,
10:09he looked a little bit lost at times and made a couple of mistakes. But I feel like this
10:14pre-season was really good for him as well, just to get a few minutes and sort of just
10:18get himself on the ball and get more minutes with the team really.
10:22Brighton in their tour of Japan with two wins from two, scoring nine goals and conceding
10:26three in the process. How would you assess Albion's trip to the Far East, Deren? It's
10:31very much a worthwhile endeavour, do you think?
10:39Sorry, guys, the old trick. Yeah, absolutely. It seemed to be a very positive experience
10:46for the players, for the manager and also commercially as well. They're sort of cashing
10:52in on the fact that Mitoma is an absolute star over in Japan. And I think they really
11:00enjoyed the occasion and it was a good chance for the team to bond in a different environment.
11:07It looks like they were training hard as well. It certainly wasn't a jolly for the players.
11:12Hurlitzer had them training very hard. They're picking up their fitness in what was quite
11:18humid conditions as well. So hopefully they can reap the benefits from that tour. But
11:26yeah, I think from the outside looking in, it seemed a real success and it boosted the
11:32club's profile in an area which Paul Barber said they've got lots of commercial partners as well.
11:40So in that respect, it was good. But from the playing side as well, I think it was very
11:45worthwhile. And I'll be back to the less sort of exotic surroundings of Loftus Road this Saturday
11:51now to see how their work in Japan has progressed against QPR. They've got two more friendlies
11:58coming up. So they've got QPR this Saturday and then Villarreal the following week at the Amex.
12:04And then they're good to go or hopefully good to go for Everton for the first Premier League game.
12:10So yeah, hopefully the work that they did in Japan
12:12should set them on the right path for that first Premier League game.
12:18Meanwhile, it's very much an end of an era, Brian, as it's been confirmed that Pascal
12:21Gross has left the Seagulls to join his boyhood club, Borussia Dortmund, for officially undisclosed
12:26terms as per the club. How big of a blow is it to lose Gross, Henry? And where does the German
12:32rank in Albion's pantheon of greats? He's just been superb, hasn't he, since he's joined?
12:37Yeah, I mean, for what he's done for the club and the fact that he's been there through sort
12:41of a whole Premier League journey up until now, you'd have to put him up there, I think. I think
12:45it'd be wrong to not put him up there with a few of the Albion greats. And I mean, after seven years
12:50at the Albion, 261 appearances, 32 goals, 52 assists. I mean, he's been absolutely quality
12:58and it's a real blow for the team. He's an absolute engine. And sometimes he doesn't get
13:02the sort of credit that is due because he's sort of in that midfield role, sort of helping other
13:08players get up the pitch and coming back to defend at times. He's almost everywhere. And
13:15yeah, he didn't get too much credit at times. And I think that the fact that he's just gone to
13:23Borussia Dortmund, having impressed for Germany when he has had a few minutes with the German
13:30national side, is really good. And I think, although it's a big loss, I think he deserves it.
13:36He deserves it. There were rumours that he was homesick. Maybe some Borussia Dortmund fans
13:42might not realise the kind of player they have on their hands, but he's certainly a great in my
13:47eyes for the Albion. It's a big loss. Yeah, I'd have to agree with that, yeah.
13:52I was going to say as well, it seems that there could be another midfielder on the way out of
13:56Brighton. It's been well documented that Billy Gilmore is of interest to Antonio Conte and
14:01Napoli. An £8 million bid was rejected last week and it seems Napoli are poised to make a second
14:07offer, which we believe is around £10 million. What's the latest on that, Darren, and has that
14:12reported offer been materialised? I'm not, we're not sure. We're not sure is the honest answer to
14:18that one. There has been, obviously they had the initial bid of £8 million rejected, which seems
14:24you know, seriously low for a player of Gilmore's age experience and plus he's got two years on his
14:30contract as well. So there's no need for Brighton to sell him for such a small amount. Obviously
14:37they'd like to keep him. There was a report that came out of Italy, I'm not quite sure how serious
14:43it was, but it was saying that Gilmore has said yes, you know, he was happy to go to Napoli. But
14:51as far as sort of the negotiation on price is going, we haven't heard any more as to whether
14:58Napoli have increased that offer. So it's very much a case of wait and see. Personally,
15:04I'd like to see Billy Gilmore stay, especially with Gross, Pascal Gross, departing. I think
15:09Gilmore can have a huge season for Brighton this year. Although they are bringing in, or have
15:15brought in Mats Whiffer from Feyenoord for £25 million. He looks a really good player. He didn't
15:21feature in Japan, but I think he'll be a very good, ready to go, as Henry was saying, at some
15:26of the other players that they brought in. And I think Whiffer is in that category as well. He won't
15:31need a season to get up to speed. He's good to go. And also they're still trying to push for Diego
15:37Gomez as well from into Miami. So if Gilmore did leave, they do have a couple of more options, but
15:45hopefully these guys coming in will be additions to Gilmore rather than replacements.
15:53We will wait and see how that resolves itself. We're going to take a quick break and when we
15:56come back, we're going to talk all things Crawley Town. Welcome back to part two,
16:00where we'll discuss all things Crawley Town and the Reds gave a good account of themselves as
16:04they went toe-to-toe with Premier League Crystal Palace in an entertaining pre-season friendly
16:08at the Broadfield Stadium on Saturday. The Reds were 4-0 down at half-time, but won the second
16:13half 3-2 as the match ended 6-3 to Palace. And it very much sounded like it was a thriller, Sam.
16:17How would you assess Crawley's performance?
16:20It certainly was a thriller, Matt, actually. It was a very fun match to watch. Definitely one of
16:24the most entertaining games I've seen at the Broadfield Stadium in recent seasons. Obviously,
16:30last year, we had the same match before the season started and it was Ebreche Eze that stole the show
16:36on that day in a 4-0 win. And he wasn't there this year, so he kind of hoped that maybe Crawley could
16:40limit Palace's attack and threat and then could maybe make it a closer scoreline than the 4-0
16:46result last year. But it didn't turn out like that at all, actually. They were 4-0 down very quickly,
16:54obviously, by half-time and 2-0 down after two minutes. So, it was a really shocking start to
17:01the match for Crawley. They looked all at sea at the back. The defenders really didn't look
17:04comfortable at all, kind of giving the ball away constantly. And Palace were so ruthless,
17:10especially, obviously, Edouard with a clinical finish to open scoring. And it was just, yeah,
17:16really concerning start to the match, actually. And you kind of felt it could get really embarrassing.
17:20It could end up being a cricket score. But there was a moment where there was a drinks break
17:25towards the end of the first half and Scott Lindsay brought his side over to make some
17:30tactical adjustments. And it did work a treat, actually. And you did start to see
17:34some improvements towards the end of the first half. And then after the second half,
17:38they really were a different team. And they scored a cracking goal from rushing Hepburn-Murphy
17:43right to the top corner and got them back into the game. And he got another goal. It was a lot
17:50more fortuitous with Joaquin Anderson tripping over the ball at the back, which is very comical.
17:57And he just had a bit of a tap in Hepburn-Murphy to score again. And Jack Rowles came off the bench
18:01to score for Crawley as well. And it was a lovely team move, actually, that one. And moments earlier,
18:06he'd just cleared one off the line. So really good impact from Jack Rowles, who was a bit of
18:10a bench player last season. So maybe he'll be looking to have some more starts this year.
18:15But I think, yeah, it was really impressive the way that Crawley came back after that dismal
18:21opening 25 minutes or so in the first half. And if it wasn't for that, then they would have won
18:26the game. And they actually probably were in a good position in the game for quite a large period
18:32of it, if you know what I mean. So I think it was only a small period of the game in which they did
18:35completely crumble. And it looked like it was going to be a bit of a cricket score. But Scotland did a
18:39great job. Obviously, he pulled his team in at halftime and got them playing a lot better football.
18:44And I think he basically just said the press wasn't quite right initially. And he had to
18:48change that and to make sure that those turnovers weren't happening. But he fixed those little issues.
18:52And they got a few goals. And obviously, the defence was still a little bit leaky. And
18:56they conceded six goals in the end. But the second half was a lot better than the first.
19:02You were also in attendance with Sam Morton at the game, Henry. Who stood out for the Reds
19:06against Palace? As Sam kind of alluded to, it seemed like a great afternoon for the Crawley
19:09forwards, but one to forget for the defenders. Oh, yeah, absolutely. I think in those first
19:14sort of 10 to 15 minutes, I was thinking, what am I doing here? No, I'm only joking. But
19:19it did seem like Crawley was almost like a rabbit in the headlights. They'd been caught
19:24really badly. And it only took sort of rushing Hepburn, Murphy to sort of help them out in that
19:3250th minute, scoring an absolute beauty from outside the box, as Sam mentioned. But it did
19:36take till the second half to get there. It did take that half of sort of getting battered a
19:41little bit to go, actually, there's some things we can do here to actually get ourselves in the
19:46game, not sort of embarrass ourselves and actually, you know, have a pretty decent,
19:51competitive, friendly in that second half. I thought there was some excellent pressing as
19:56well by Hepburn, Murphy. He sort of came off the blocks really quickly. And he was a very,
20:03very good player in that game for Crawley Town. And as Sam mentioned as well, Jack Rolls was part
20:09of a lovely team goal, which he scored, cleared a goal off the line when he came on. And that was
20:14literally his first touch of the game. So if that's a good statement, you know, to sort of
20:19represent himself, you know, I think there's no better way than, you know, than doing that.
20:24But Renan Darcy as well, he struggled to get into the game at times. But once Crawley were on the
20:29attack in that second half and actually looking like the better side, there was a lot of times
20:34where he was able to actually win back the ball from the Palace players and get the ball up. So
20:40I think overall, a lot of positives to take away from that. And Scott Lindsay after the game was
20:45saying that he was questioned sort of about the sort of the start and what he thought about the
20:50whole game, maybe insinuating that they didn't have the best game. But he said he thought it
20:54was a pretty good performance and he was very impressed with his players. So I think another
21:00really good pre-season game for Crawley and a lot of things they can take into the season with.
21:05Yeah, Henry's kind of mentioned it there, Sam. Scott Lindsay was very,
21:09quite chipper despite the scoreline, wasn't he, at the end of the game?
21:12He was. He was, yeah. He was very happy with the way Crawley performed towards the end of the first
21:17half and in the second half because he disputed the claim that it was a game of two halves,
21:21actually, because that's something that was put to him by the club and media. And he didn't agree
21:25with that at all. And he felt that Crawley actually, by the first 25 minutes, were good apart
21:30from that. So he felt that it was more than just a 45-minute performance from Crawley. And he said
21:35the fans certainly got their money's worth. And he said there's lots of it that he's really pleased
21:40about. Obviously, the goals that the players scored mostly came from mistakes and he acknowledged
21:45that. But he said there's nothing to worry about. And he said that's obviously just, it comes from
21:48the territory of being in pre-season and the mistakes are going to happen. And as long as
21:52they happen now and not in League One when that starts, I think that's what he's hoping for,
21:58I think. And he's not too concerned about that. And he'll obviously iron out those mistakes.
22:03But he said Crawley scored two really good goals on the press, which really pleased him.
22:08And he wants to make sure players are rewarded for their hard work as it makes them buy into it
22:12more. I think he was alluding to the mistake from Anderson, but Crawley obviously were pressing high
22:18up the pitch and perhaps forced him into that mistake. So I think Lindsay was pleased with the
22:23way that his players performed in that sense. And he said if they can press like that against
22:28a Premier League team and score goals, then they can certainly do it in League One. But he is hoping
22:32they can create more goals from open play, or create more chances, as I should say. That's
22:37something they're working hard to do on the training ground. But obviously it's a new group
22:40with new players, so it will take time. And the priority is just getting more minutes into the
22:44tank in pre-season and bedding down those principles of how he wants his team to play.
