00:32 - Hello and welcome to Latest TV News.
00:35 My name is Jacob Pannins,
00:36 I'm a reporter for Sussex World,
00:38 and I'm gonna be speaking with sports reporter Sam Morton
00:41 about Brighton's first ever European win.
00:43 But first, here are your top stories from across the county.
00:46 Homes were evacuated in Hastings Town Centre
00:50 over the weekend as the town was hit by flooding.
00:53 Priory Meadow Shopping Centre was also closed off
00:56 following torrential rain in the Hastings area
00:58 on Friday night and Saturday morning.
01:01 The fire service was out pumping water
01:03 as it gushed up from drains in South Terrace
01:05 and the shopping centre itself.
01:07 Councillor Judy Rogers had urged residents and visitors
01:10 to avoid the town centre
01:11 as large areas of Alexandra Park were flooded too.
01:15 There appeared to be less serious flooding
01:16 in Orr, Hollington, and an area of Fairlight.
01:19 Two hotels in Eastbourne will stop being used
01:23 to house asylum seekers, the government has announced.
01:26 The properties will be part of the first wave
01:28 of 50 hotels across the country
01:30 to stop taking migrants because of the impact
01:32 on Eastbourne's visitor economy,
01:34 according to MP Caroline Ansell.
01:36 Mrs Ansell said she spoke to the immigration minister,
01:39 Robert Jenrick, to go through the details
01:41 and has worked with the council.
01:42 A planning application has been submitted
01:45 to build a new world-class £11 million arts, education,
01:49 and cultural hub near Eastbourne.
01:51 Plans to develop Black Robin Farm
01:53 on the downland above Eastbourne will soon be considered
01:56 by the South Downs National Park Authority.
01:59 If the plan is approved, visitors will be able to engage
02:01 in the cultural heritage of the rolling chalk downland
02:04 through public artworks with exhibitions,
02:07 creative activities and courses, artist and maker events,
02:11 and a locally sourced food and drink offer.
02:13 Eastbourne Borough Council leader Stephen Holt
02:15 said he felt like the town was within touching distance
02:18 of something really momentous.
02:20 The application follows the council's successful
02:22 £19.8 million bid to the government's levelling up fund.
02:27 Eastbourne International Airshow will return in 2024
02:30 to mark its 30th anniversary year.
02:33 Eastbourne Borough Council has given the green light
02:35 for the annual airshow to return from August 15th to 18th
02:39 after the event enjoyed another successful year
02:41 whilst also running on a cost-neutral basis.
02:44 After launching in 1993 and becoming one of the UK's
02:47 largest free seafront airshows,
02:50 the event took a two-year break during the pandemic,
02:52 meaning 2024 will be its 30th year.
02:55 Airborne fans are being encouraged to support
02:57 the 30th year by donating now at saveairborne.com
03:01 to support flying display costs
03:03 and ensure the show continues in the future.
03:05 Now let's hear from sports reporter Sam Morton
03:07 as he gives us an insight into Brighton's historic
03:10 2-0 victory in the Europa League against Dutch giants Ajax.
03:13 So Sam, their first ever European win,
03:15 you were there on the ground, what was the atmosphere like?
03:18 - It was amazing, it was an excellent day really.
03:20 I think Brighton went into the game knowing they had to win
03:23 to keep their hopes really alive of progressing through
03:26 to the next round after a defeat against Athens
03:28 in a draw at Marseille.
03:30 They really needed to beat Ajax,
03:31 and they were playing against a team that were
03:33 well out of form, right down the bottom of the Eredivisie,
03:36 and completely unlike the Ajax team
03:39 that we've come to know over the years.
03:41 It was a difficult game, I think it won at Brighton.
03:45 It was interesting to see how they'd get on,
03:47 obviously being favourites again at Europe
03:48 like they were against Athens, but they were fantastic.
03:51 Right from the off, they dominated the game,
03:53 dominated possession, and they made it look really easy,
03:56 to be honest, I think it could have been more,
03:58 but they were ruthless when they had the chances,
04:01 and there were some great performances throughout the pitch,
04:04 and they really did make it look very easy,
04:06 and got the win they desperately needed.
04:08 And the atmosphere was great, the fans were right up for it,
04:11 and we're delighted that they got the win.
04:14 And I think the Ajax fans initially were quite loud,
04:16 but they quickly went very quiet,
04:18 and I think you kind of feel sorry for them,
04:20 I think they must just not know what's going on
04:22 with the team, and Brighton took full advantage of that,
04:26 and really did look by far the better team on the night.
04:29 - And how did it sort of feel,
04:30 I mean it's a historic night for Brighton, really,
04:32 I think it's a game that people are gonna be telling
04:34 their grandchildren about,
04:35 their first ever European win,
04:36 and also to have that against Ajax is pretty phenomenal.
04:38 - Yeah, no, it's fantastic, no matter what form Ajax are in,
04:41 they're still a big name, and it'll go down
04:43 in the record books as Brighton beating Ajax,
04:45 and I think there was a tweet from Ajax for 2-0 saying,
04:49 "2-0 Brighton, anti-fatty,"
04:52 and it was just almost like a crazy thing to see, really,
04:56 I think it just, how have we got to this position
04:59 where Brighton are in Europe, down 2-0,
05:00 a Barcelona player beating Ajax 2-0,
05:02 which is just incredible,
05:04 and one that the fans have been talking about for years,
05:06 and I just really hope they can back that up again
05:08 when they travel to Amsterdam next week,
05:11 and get another win, which I think they really can,
05:14 with Ajax playing the way they are,
05:16 there's no reason why they can't get back-to-back wins
05:18 against them, and they'll be fully in charge of the group,
05:21 and able to get through to the next round.
05:23 - And what do you think Brighton did different against Ajax
05:25 that they failed to do against Marseille and Athens?
05:28 - I think a bit more experience, I think,
05:31 a bit more know-how, they've had two previous games
05:33 against Athens and Marseille,
05:35 they really took that on board, I think,
05:37 and they were so much improved from previous games, really,
05:41 and they were so much better defensively as well,
05:43 and obviously I know we've said they've come up against
05:45 a side completely devoid of confidence,
05:47 and you really saw that on the Ajax side,
05:49 there wasn't really a lot of threat from them, really.
05:52 But I think Brighton still had to be alert,
05:54 I think after Fatih got his goal,
05:57 and he had another chance just moments later,
06:00 Ajax went up the other end and hit the post,
06:02 so I think it was one of the few moments
06:03 where they could have been hit on the break,
06:05 but they were just alert to everything,
06:07 and Van Hecker was superb,
06:09 Lewis Dunck, as always, was fantastic,
06:11 and they just snuffed out everything, really,
06:13 that Ajax posed against them,
06:15 and that's not something we've really seen this season,
06:17 I think we've seen them concede at least one in every game,
06:19 so it was so important to get that clean sheet, I think.
06:23 And yeah, a real bonus to the night,
06:25 and they really did learn from the mistakes, I think,
06:27 against Athens and Marseille,
06:29 where they did concede sloppy goals.
06:31 - Yeah, I mean, the clean sheet was astonishing, really,
06:33 you know, Brighton don't get clean sheets, really,
06:35 so yeah, to get it against the Dutch giants was amazing,
06:38 and how important do you think those points are as well,
06:40 'cause if Ajax had won,
06:41 those three points had gone their way,
06:42 it wouldn't have looked great
06:43 for Brighton in the table, would it?
06:45 - No, no, exactly, it was so important
06:46 they got that win, really.
06:48 I think anything else would have been a poor result.
06:51 In terms of the group,
06:52 in terms of how bad form Ajax have been,
06:54 and they really did need to get that win,
06:55 but that doesn't take away from the achievement,
06:58 I don't think, it's still fantastic
06:59 that they managed to do that.
07:01 And as I say, really, really hope
07:03 they can go back up again in Amsterdam,
07:07 and hopefully get another win.
07:08 - And who were your standout performers against Ajax?
07:10 - Antti Fatih was brilliant,
07:12 I think he's the best performance in a Brighton show,
07:14 he's really settling into the team now,
07:18 I think he's adjusting to De Servi's style of play.
07:20 I think De Servi made the point at the end of the game
07:22 that he didn't play a lot of football last season,
07:24 so he's really starting to adjust to that,
07:26 playing more frequently,
07:29 under a new manager in a new country,
07:30 so it was never going to be a quick transition,
07:34 and he's taken his time,
07:35 but he's really now starting to show his class.
07:37 And as I say, he could have scored two goals
07:38 as a chance just after his goal
07:40 that nearly went in,
07:41 powerful shot that went just over.
07:43 Edingre was fantastic,
07:45 it was a lovely assist for the second goal,
07:48 outside the boot, chip into the box,
07:50 Fatih took it brilliantly,
07:52 and slotted it away,
07:53 but it was a fantastic assist,
07:54 and Edingre was class,
07:56 and I mentioned that Van Hecke was brilliant,
07:59 really, really impressive performance.
08:02 The company's done perfectly in that back line, I think,
08:05 and that can be a really good partnership going forward.
08:07 But yeah, all over the pitch,
08:08 and Billy Gilmore again was brilliant,
08:10 so yeah, difficult to pick out any poor performers,
08:12 really, from that night.
08:14 - And obviously, we're halfway through the group stage now,
08:15 three games in, we've played two home games,
08:17 one away game,
08:18 so one home game remains against Marseille,
08:20 it's going to be a tricky game.
08:21 Are you worried that Brighton might struggle
08:23 to progress with a tough run of games?
08:26 - I think they're in a good position now,
08:27 they've got that win,
08:28 and they can really take that forward, I think.
08:30 Yeah, get at least a draw or win in Amsterdam,
08:33 home against Marseille,
08:34 I think they can really do well now.
08:38 I think they've got that backing of that win,
08:40 and they've got that confidence,
08:41 and we can really take that forward.
08:43 And now the players have a bit more experience
08:45 at the halfway point,
08:46 they've faced the opponents,
08:48 they maybe know what to expect a little bit more,
08:50 and De Servi will maybe know what to expect,
08:53 and he can adjust his team accordingly.
08:55 And I think they've got the players
08:56 to definitely do damage against Marseille,
08:59 and Athens, and Ajax as well.
09:00 So yeah, I think absolutely,
09:02 they're in a good position now,
09:03 and they're great to see,
09:04 and exciting that they could potentially
09:05 get through to the knockout rounds.
09:07 - Yeah, and are there any teams
09:08 that are standing out to you
09:09 that you'd maybe like Brighton to draw
09:10 if they were to progress past the group stage?
09:13 - Well, Leverkusen, potentially.
09:15 I think they look good.
09:16 I think another tough team,
09:19 a different country that they haven't played in
09:20 yet this season.
09:21 I think any of them, really.
09:22 I think there's no poor result, really,
09:25 for Brighton to get,
09:27 and it'd just be fantastic to get anyone
09:30 in the knockout rounds,
09:30 and have the best chance of progressing even further.
09:34 But it's just, I think the fans must be giddy
09:36 at the prospect of even being there.
09:38 I think at the moment, it's incredible,
09:40 and long may it continue, really.
09:41 And the longer they're in the competition, the better.
09:44 - Yeah, definitely.
09:45 And where do you sort of fall on that line
09:46 between getting teams that are easier to beat,
09:49 that you've got a better chance of progressing,
09:50 or playing teams like Ajax,
09:52 playing the big names that are gonna get you excited?
09:54 Where do you sort of fall on that?
09:55 - I think for Brighton, it kind of works both ways.
09:58 I think they seem to perform better
10:00 against the top teams, almost.
10:01 I think, obviously, we saw against Athens,
10:02 where they were the overwhelming favourites to win,
10:05 when really they shouldn't have been.
10:06 First ever game in Europe,
10:07 lots of pressure that comes with that.
10:09 So I think playing against a supposed weaker team
10:11 doesn't always favour Brighton.
10:13 Like we saw against Fulham at the weekend,
10:15 where they were the favourites
10:16 and didn't quite come away with a win.
10:18 So I feel like playing the top teams
10:20 almost plays into their hands a little bit more.
10:22 Supposedly, maybe a little bit of the underdogs
10:23 play on the counter.
10:25 I can really hit teams when they least expect it, I think.
10:28 And that really plays into Brighton's hands.
10:30 So yeah, I think the better the team, the better, I think.
10:34 And obviously, just having those massive games,
10:36 being able to maybe travel to other countries in Europe,
10:39 it's just an added bonus, really.
10:41 - Yeah, it's a fantastic experience for the fans.
10:43 But like you say,
10:44 Brighton seem to perform quite well against teams
10:45 that are quite possession-based.
10:46 Make sure you tune into part two,
10:48 as we'll be discussing the Seagulls' one-all draw
10:50 at home against Fulham
10:51 and their upcoming trip to Everton.
10:53 Welcome back to part two of Latest TV News.
11:07 I've got sports reporter Sam Morton with me here,
11:09 and we're gonna be talking about Brighton's one-all draw
11:12 with Fulham, as well as their upcoming fixture
11:13 against Everton.
11:14 So Sam, what did you make of Brighton's performance
11:16 on the weekend against Fulham?
11:18 - Yeah, difficult result.
11:19 I think it was a game that Brighton were expected to win.
11:21 They started brilliantly, dominated the first half.
11:24 Evan Ferguson scored a lovely goal.
11:27 I really feel they needed to get a second goal
11:29 whilst they were on top and really build on that,
11:33 take the game away from Fulham, really.
11:35 And they didn't quite manage to do it
11:36 and once you don't extend your advantage,
11:39 when one goal lead is always a dangerous score,
11:42 and Fulham were always going to have a better spell.
11:45 And in the second half, they did.
11:47 They did come back and they managed to score
11:49 a cracking goal for Jal Pallinia.
11:51 It was a really good, well-worked goal.
11:53 And then Brighton, kind of, were the better team
11:56 even after that.
11:57 I think it was, as De Servi said post-match,
11:59 Brighton were the better team
12:00 probably for 85 minutes of the match.
12:02 So it's incredibly frustrating for them.
12:03 They didn't come away with a win.
12:05 And it's a number of games now
12:07 where they haven't won in the league,
12:08 where they obviously have had a good result in Europe.
12:11 But De Servi said after that he really wanted
12:12 to follow that up in the league.
12:14 So I'm sure he'll be really annoyed.
12:16 I think they didn't get that win in the league
12:18 to end that kind of winless run
12:20 that they're on at the moment.
12:22 But I think performance is encouraging.
12:23 I think it's better defensively.
12:26 I think, obviously, as I say,
12:27 they were on top completely for most of the game
12:30 and it was kind of lapsing communication,
12:33 a little bit of an issue, I think,
12:35 with Belieber that De Servi pointed out,
12:36 where he didn't feel comfortable in that moment
12:40 and he lost the ball and they conceded.
12:41 So really unfortunate in that sense.
12:43 They made one lapse of communication, cost them dear.
12:46 But yeah, I think performance is encouraging
12:49 and hopefully they can bounce back
12:51 really quickly against Everton.
12:53 - Yeah, I guess with Brighton, you know,
12:54 you can't win them all,
12:54 but they would be going into that Fulham game,
12:57 seeing that as three points they should be getting
12:58 if they want to end up near the top end
13:00 of the table again this season.
13:01 But like you said, they got caught out there
13:03 for the Pallinia goal.
13:05 But I guess that's just the risky run
13:08 when you want to play it out from the back.
13:09 Sooner or later, you're going to get caught out.
13:10 That's just the law of averages.
13:12 - Yeah, yeah, exactly.
13:13 And obviously we saw it go terribly wrong
13:15 against Assassin Villa.
13:17 But I think it's a different kind of game, really,
13:18 where Brighton at home against a team
13:20 they really were expected to beat.
13:22 And as I say, it was going really well.
13:25 The style of play was working.
13:27 They got a great goal for Evan Ferguson.
13:29 I think they just needed to get that second goal,
13:31 second or third goal,
13:32 and it would have just killed the game off there.
13:33 But Fulham were just gaining in confidence
13:36 whilst the game was still 1-0.
13:38 Fulham were kind of encouraged
13:39 they'd be able to nick something, and they did.
13:41 But obviously there was obviously controversy
13:44 with the goal scorer,
13:46 which obviously fans were not happy about.
13:48 But at the end of the day,
13:50 I think every team has had their fair share of it.
13:52 So you need to kind of maybe put that to the back of minds
13:54 and try and learn from the mistake they did make.
13:57 - Yeah, and what did you think about that?
13:58 Obviously for the viewers at home who don't know,
14:00 Pallinia went in and it looked like
14:02 he caught the face of Pascal Gros with his elbow.
14:05 Do you think that was a red card?
14:06 - I do, yeah.
14:07 I think he should have been sent off for it.
14:09 I think it was violent conduct.
14:10 And we've seen players sent off for that,
14:14 or even not as much.
14:15 - A lot less, yeah.
14:15 - A lot less, a lot less.
14:16 So yeah, I think definitely he was fortunate
14:18 not to be sent off.
14:19 And just added insult to injury, really,
14:23 that he was the man to equalise.
14:25 And just, the Serb he was asked about it post-match,
14:28 but he didn't want to dwell on it.
14:29 He said he wanted just to concentrate on the football.
14:31 But he probably was seething inside, I imagine.
14:35 But he didn't want to comment on that, understandably.
14:38 I think trying to avoid a fine.
14:40 But yeah, it was really frustrating, really.
14:42 And it always seems to be the way
14:43 that if someone's been really fortunate
14:45 to avoid a red card, that they then have a big say
14:47 in how the game ends.
14:47 And yeah, so frustrating in that sense.
14:50 As it, in my eyes, was definitely a red card
14:53 and it should have been pulled back.
14:54 - Yeah, obviously.
14:55 And he had a fantastic game as well.
14:56 I was seeing on Twitter, a lot of Fulham fans
14:58 were saying he's man of the match.
14:59 They really liked the way he played.
15:00 And yeah, just kind of adds insult to injury
15:02 when you think he could have gone off the pitch
15:03 a lot earlier.
15:04 But sort of on a more positive note for Brighton,
15:06 Evan Ferguson scored again.
15:08 And it was a fantastic finish just to get it
15:10 and just effortlessly just bend it into the far corner.
15:12 It just, it looks like he's playing FIFA on easy mode
15:15 or something sometimes.
15:16 - Yeah, no, he's obviously entered a mini gold drought
15:18 and he wasn't at his best.
15:20 And he's been playing half a game,
15:22 then being substituted or coming on late in games.
15:24 And he's not really been himself in recent games.
15:27 So it was great to see that he still hasn't lost
15:30 that incredible ability to find the net.
15:33 And he's still incredibly young.
15:35 And it's just crazy how he has that talent really
15:38 that we don't really see very often.
15:40 And it's just an eye and knack for goal really.
15:42 And it was a fantastic finish.
15:44 And hopefully that will kick him on
15:46 and he can go on a bit of a scoring run again.
15:48 'Cause yeah, since that hat trick against Newcastle,
15:51 we've, as I say, we've not seen the best from him.
15:53 So yeah, hopefully he can kick start his season.
15:57 But I think, yeah, you're gonna expect that
15:59 for someone of that age and he's still adjusting
16:01 to life as a Premier League footballer on a regular basis.
16:05 So it's, yeah, no, great for Brighton
16:07 that he's found the net again.
16:09 - So yeah, it's great to see Evan Ferguson score again.
16:11 But Brighton are quite lucky that they've got players
16:13 like Welbeck and they've got players like Jal Pedro,
16:15 who's been scoring quite a bit in the Europa League.
16:18 - Yeah, no, Jal Pedro has been fantastic for Brighton.
16:20 Really works hard for the team.
16:22 And he's got a couple of goals in the league,
16:23 but he's been great scoring for them in the Europa League,
16:26 obviously four goals already.
16:28 He was fantastic against Ajax
16:29 and we could really see partnership building
16:31 with Matoma in that game.
16:32 And that was great to see.
16:34 And he's been brilliant.
16:35 Obviously it's a shame to see Danny Welbeck
16:37 get injured recently as well.
16:38 So he'll be out for a little while, I think.
16:40 So really important that Jal Pedro stays fit.
16:43 I think he'll start to get more minutes
16:45 and rotate with Evan Ferguson until Danny Welbeck's back.
16:49 But I think, yeah, they've got such strength and depth
16:50 in those attacking areas this season
16:52 when obviously everyone's fit.
16:53 So that's great for Brighton
16:55 and can really help in those competitions.
16:57 But I mean, they definitely have struggled
16:58 to play their best every game.
17:00 I think they were fantastic against Ajax
17:02 and then maybe struggled a little bit against Fulham
17:05 where they obviously dominated the game,
17:06 but couldn't quite finish the game off.
17:08 And we've seen that a couple of times this season
17:10 where they've been superb one game
17:12 and then not at their flowing best the next game.
17:15 And that's just something you're gonna have to learn
17:17 and to get used to playing games so frequently.
17:20 And De Serbi obviously said
17:21 they're not quite ready for that yet,
17:22 but I think they'll probably be focusing on that.
17:25 And trying to get fitness levels
17:26 to their absolute best as well.
17:28 - Yeah, I guess that happens with any team
17:29 who's in the Premier League
17:30 and also playing the Europa League.
17:31 That Thursday, Sunday game fixtures can be really tricky.
17:34 We've seen West Ham struggle.
17:36 And for example, they lost against Everton on the weekend.
17:37 And it looked as if maybe they had a bit more energy
17:40 in the tank, they might have beaten Everton
17:41 and Everton left one nil winners.
17:42 And that kind of leads us into Brighton's next fixture.
17:45 It's away at Goodison Park against Everton
17:47 who are coming off that win.
17:48 How do you see that game going?
17:50 - A difficult game.
17:51 Everton in good form, great win against West Ham.
17:53 And then obviously a bit of a Kryptonite team
17:55 for them last season.
17:56 Obviously that crazy 5-1 win at the Amex.
17:58 So really difficult game.
18:00 Obviously Goodison Park is never an easy place to go to.
18:03 And Sean Dyche obviously sets his team up really well.
18:06 So a tough game, really tough game for Brighton.
18:09 And one that they need to win really
18:12 to end that winless run they've got at the moment.
18:14 And to really stake a claim for the top five
18:18 or top six again this season.
18:19 Because Aston Villa look so strong.
18:21 I think Aston Villa have just gone
18:22 from strength to strength.
18:23 Players are just doing amazing for them.
18:25 Emery is doing very well.
18:27 So a tough season really in that sense
18:31 to finish as high as it did last season.
18:35 So I think these kinds of games,
18:35 Brighton need to win, I think.
18:37 And it's not going to be easy, as I say,
18:39 against a well-drilled
18:41 and well-defensively organised team in Everton.
18:45 So it'll be interesting to see how they get on.
18:47 - Yeah, definitely.
18:48 I was at the West Ham-Everton game on the weekend
18:50 and Everton defensively really, really impressed me.
18:52 I mean, they didn't give West Ham anything to work with.
18:55 I mean, attackingly, they didn't throw a lot forward,
18:57 but we know how Sean Darshay's team's play.
18:59 And that's something that Brighton
19:00 are going to be prepared for.
19:00 But like you said in the first half as well,
19:03 Brighton seem to play better against teams
19:05 who want the ball.
19:06 When they struggle against teams,
19:07 you'll sit back and say, "Play against us then."
19:09 Do you think that's going to be really tough for them?
19:11 Do you think Brighton can and will win at Gundersen Park?
19:14 - They definitely can win.
19:15 I think whether they will is obviously a different story.
19:17 You just never know how the game's going to go.
19:19 I think they need an early goal.
19:20 I think the longer the game is maybe nil-nil
19:23 or if they concede early,
19:25 'cause that was the problem last season
19:27 when they conceded so early on to Koure at the Amex.
19:31 It then just played into Everton's hands
19:33 where they could sit back and then hit Brighton
19:35 on the counter.
19:36 So you want to kind of avoid a repeat of that
19:38 and to get an early goal themselves.
19:40 And then you have to bring Everton out
19:41 and you can then maybe get a second goal.
19:44 But as I say, that's a lot easier said than done
19:45 against a team that's obviously on form.
19:48 A great win against West Ham.
19:50 So they're going to be confident going into it.
19:51 - And like you said, points are going to be so important
19:53 because traditionally we've got this traditional big six
19:57 and then you've got Newcastle joining that now
19:58 to make it seven.
19:59 And then you've got Aston Villa
20:00 who are looking fantastic in the league as well.
20:02 That's eight.
20:02 So you're thinking if Brighton don't start picking up points,
20:04 they might not get into Europe again next season.
20:06 - Exactly, yeah.
20:07 They need to pick up the points
20:09 and get their form back going in the league.
20:11 But it's tough, isn't it?
20:12 'Cause they're not used to playing in Europe
20:14 and the Premier League.
20:16 Obviously two games a week, every week pretty much.
