00:00My Outro For My 20th Birthday
00:31Hello and welcome to Latest TV News, I'm Sam Mawson, reporter for Sussex World and
00:37in this week's show we will be reflecting on Brighton & Hove Albion's draw against
00:40Arsenal in the final match before the international break. We also spoke to fans at the Emirates
00:46Stadium about the transfer window and their first impressions of new manager Fabian Herzela.
00:50First, here are the top stories from across East Sussex.
00:54A body has been found on a beach in East Sussex. Police were called after a body of a man was
00:59found by members of the public off the shore of Western Esplanade, Hove shortly before
01:044pm on Tuesday. Sadly, a 53-year-old man from Port Slade was pronounced dead at the scene.
01:10His next of kin have been informed and there are no suspicious circumstances, police said.
01:15A fundraiser has been set up to cover the funeral costs of a dad who died following
01:18a stabbing in Hailsham. Billy Ripley was stabbed at Vicarage Field shopping centre in Hailsham
01:23on Thursday August 29th. The 20-year-old, who leaves behind a young daughter, has been
01:28described as a loving, caring and kind young man. Following the tragedy, Mr Ripley's
01:33aunt, Julie Puttick, has launched a fundraiser to help the cost of the funeral and a headstone.
01:38So far it has raised more than £4,500. See the latest on the police investigation at
01:44Sussexworld.co.uk.
01:47Meanwhile, plans to begin work on phase zero of a controversial housing development on
01:51the outskirts of Eastbourne were due to go in front of councillors.
01:55On Thursday, Wylden District Council's Planning Committee, South, was due to consider
01:58an application seeking reserved matters permission connected to the 700-home Mornings Hill development
02:04in Lower Willingdon. Specifically, developer Tarn Homes is seeking permission to build
02:09out a road and other infrastructure. This includes surface water drainage measures.
02:14Tarn Homes describes as phase zero with housing and other facilities set to follow in future
02:18applications.
02:19A train line in Hastings will be closed for more than two weeks later this year due to
02:24major repair works inside the tunnel.
02:27Network Rail said replacement bus services will be running instead throughout the duration
02:31of these works.
02:32Spokesperson added, major repairs in the ore tunnel, meaning the railway, will be closed
02:36between Hastings and Rye from Saturday, October 19th to Sunday, November 3rd. Buses will replace
02:42trains between Hastings, Rye and Ashford International while engineers work on the tunnel.
02:47Essential work in the ore tunnel will improve drainage and prevent water seeping through
02:51the tunnel walls, damaging the railway equipment inside it.
02:54Finally, a Sussex entrepreneur is staging the UK's biggest gin festival on Saturday.
02:59David Hill owns E3 Events, an entertainment company based in Palmyra Square, Hove. He
03:04is also the man behind Brighton's Family Panto being staged at the Doubletree by Hilton
03:09Brighton Metropole on Brighton Seafront this December.
03:13The UK's biggest gin festival is returning to Surrey with a festival market, even more
03:17gin bars and live music all day.
03:20Stay tuned for our footage from the Emirates Stadium.
03:23We were at the Emirates as Brighton looked to continue their 100% start to the season
03:27against Mikel Arteta's Arsenal. Before the match, we spoke to some Albion fans about
03:32their thoughts on the season so far and their club's summer transfer business.
03:50Maybe too early to tell, but I think he's going to be an upgrade on to Serby, but yeah.
03:55And the new signings, who are you most pleased with and who do you most look forward to watching?
04:00Probably Kadioglu or O'Reilly. I think we needed a full back. I know they're both injured
04:07now, but yeah, I think either of those two will be our best signings.
04:13Were you surprised that Billy Gilmore was let go?
04:16Surprised, but sad. I know he's not very popular with Brighton fans just because of
04:22the way he has in the place, but I was a big fan of him. But he wanted to go to Napoli,
04:28so I'm happy he's there for him.
04:31How do you think they'll get on with that today? You actually mentioned a few injuries
04:34in Napoli first.
04:35Carlos BenÃtez has got it, I reckon. He's fantastic. A little bit like Pogba, I think,
04:42so I reckon it will be fine.
04:44What are your score predictions and who do you think Brighton needs to be most wary of
04:47on the Arsenal side?
04:48I think it has to be Saka, especially with the full backs. Unfortunately, I think a 2-0
04:59loss. I think Riyad's too good and Saka's too good, but I'm happy to be here regardless.
05:09Great stuff. How do you see the season going? What do you think represents a good season
05:13when you consider the amount of money Brighton has spent?
05:15£12,000 and a cup. Obviously, that's top of the top, but top finish above Palace would
05:28be great. That's it really. I'm not seeing the lowest of the low, but I'm seeing rough
05:35patches, so anything from there is a positive, so I'm not too fussed.
05:40What are your first impressions of the new manager, Fabian Hazela?
05:42I think he's been wonderful. I went to the fans' forum and I loved meeting him there.
05:45He was very charismatic and enthusiastic and he seems to be very structured in his approach
05:51and inspiring us to play as well as we can, so I'm excited.
05:55Obviously, the new signings have come in and a lot of money has been spent in the summer,
05:59so who are you most excited to watch for Brighton?
06:01I think Minte I'm most excited to watch. I think he's going to be fantastic.
06:05He was great pre-season, wasn't he?
06:07He was. He was brilliant pre-season.
06:10What about Billy Gilmore? Are you a bit disappointed that he was let go yesterday?
06:13Gutted. Absolutely gutted, but wish him all the very best.
06:17Do you think Brian could have got a bit more money for him, when you consider the quality
06:21of a player he is?
06:22I don't know about the business.
06:25Fair enough. What about today? It doesn't get much tougher than away at the Everton?
06:29No, it doesn't get much tougher, but we're on fine form. We've had a brilliant start
06:33to the season, so I'm really highly optimistic.
06:37Brilliant. What players do Brian need to watch out for from the Arsenal team, do you think?
06:40I don't know. I wish it was us.
06:43He's a good player as well, isn't he?
06:44He is.
06:45Brilliant. How do you see the season going? What would constitute a success, do you think,
06:49when you think of the amount of money that's been spent and the players that have been brought in?
06:51A top six finish would be fantastic. That's what I'd love.
06:55Brilliant stuff. How long have you guys been Brighton fans for?
06:59Since you were born, really. So 14 years.
07:02Great stuff. How much has it been a journey, really? How much have you enjoyed following
07:06Brian to where they are now?
07:07It's been amazing.
07:08From you, it's just been from the Championship, hasn't it?
07:11Promoted, Europa League.
07:13Brilliant. What are your first impressions of Fabio Herzegova since he's come in this season?
07:17Pretty good. He's won all his games so far. Hopefully he can keep it that way.
07:21It doesn't get much tougher than this, is it, away at the Everton? How do you see it going?
07:26Arsenal will be hard, but hopefully we can keep on pumping the draw today.
07:30Danny Wobbeck on his return?
07:32Another goal, I reckon.
07:33We were just saying the same thing. Wobbeck loves a goal against the former side.
07:36The transfer market, how would you sum that up? Are you pleased with any particular signing?
07:40It makes some good signings. It's a shame to see Gil more engrossed though, really.
07:44I can't do anything about it, really.
07:46Who are you most excited to watch for new signings?
07:49Well, of course it's me.
07:51Sadie looks good, doesn't he?
07:53Matt O'Reilly, but he's injured already.
07:55It's an unfortunate one, isn't it? How about you? Who's your top signing?
07:59My top signing is probably Ferdie. I don't know much about him, but Man United are after him, so he's got to be a good player.
08:05We're a bit weak on the left-hand side, I thought, in the last couple of games, so it'll be good to get him in.
08:10You just mentioned Gilmore. Are you surprised, a bit upset that he's left,
08:13especially when you consider the injuries that are in that midfield at the moment?
08:16He's a bit weak on the midfield, but he wanted to leave, so I can't do much about it.
08:20He was an underrated player, I think, Gilmore, wasn't he?
08:23Brighton will definitely miss him.
08:26I think there's obviously a bit of a disappointment with the amount of money that Brighton got from Brighton.
08:30£15 million, do you think you probably could have got that?
08:32It was an undisclosed fee, but £15 million is a bargain, isn't it?
08:35I have Henry Bryant here with me now to speak about all the action at the Emirates Stadium.
08:38So, Henry, what did you make of Brighton's performance? Obviously, a great result in the end?
08:42Absolutely. I think in those first 15 minutes of the games, Brighton did look a little bit leggy.
08:48They were caught a little bit cold, and Arsenal did have a really good start.
08:52They were quite unlucky, actually, to not go 1-0 up in that game, but Brighton were able to find their feet.
08:57Obviously, with the quite big Declan Rice incident that happened with that second yellow card,
09:03which caused a lot of controversy, Brighton were able to dominate the game in that second half.
09:09It was quite unlucky that whilst they did get a goal back,
09:12Herzl was quite disappointed that his side weren't able to get that extra goal and get nine points out of three games.
09:20So, obviously, when you consider the red card, you might think that Brighton,
09:24I think there were some elements of it where they wished they would have got the win against the ten men of Arsenal,
09:29but when you consider the quality of that team and how well managed they are and how much,
09:33at the end of the day, they go for the title.
09:35So, it is a draw away at the Emirates after back-to-back wins against Everton and Man United.
09:39A brilliant start to the season.
09:41Oh, it's the dream start, and I feel like a lot of pundits and people in the media were questioning
09:47whether Herzl will be the man for Brighton, whether he'll be out at Christmas because of his age
09:53and because of his inexperience, 18 months as a professional coach at St Pauli.
09:57And in terms of the way that he's been able to come into Brighton and show us his ideas,
10:03being a little bit more defensive-minded than his predecessor Roberto Di Zerbi,
10:07but also attacking at the breaks and really utilising the wingers in the midfield to push forward the attacks,
10:13like we saw with goals at Everton, for example, with Matoma linking up
10:17and going from the defensive zone into the attacking zone and actually scoring that.
10:22It's just been fantastic to see.
10:24Brighton fans are really pleased with this appointment
10:27and very excited to see what this season holds for us in the future.
10:31Obviously, it's the international break now, and we know that we might see some more players return after the break
10:36with Cadioglu, one of those, as well as Brian Gruder, who might return after the break.
10:41How important is this break now for Brighton to get some of these players back
10:45that they've only just signed and some other players as well?
10:48Absolutely. I think it's very important because, in terms of the players that we will be getting back,
10:54that will help us build our squad and also see what these players are like as a whole.
11:00We've seen Mats Weifer, who played when we had the Everton game for a little bit,
11:05and it was interesting to see how he was still getting used to being on the pitch,
11:09being into that speed of the Premier League. Gruder's a really, really big talent.
11:14A lot of fans of the Bundesliga are really upset that he's left Mainz and is at the Albion
11:20because of how much of a top talent he is.
11:22He's going to be one that will be a big one for us because, in terms of injuries,
11:29we know how badly they can affect a season, especially last season when we were in the Europa League
11:34and the extra games we were playing there.
11:36Whilst we don't have that, the fact that we have had injuries already with the likes of Matt O'Reilly,
11:42who's unfortunately not going to be playing for at least another few months
11:47due to an injury that he got in his first few minutes on the field,
11:50just shows the importance of having that extra squad depth
11:53and also the fact that they're young players with lots of potential is the Brighton way to go about it.
12:07Welcome to another episode of the Goalmouth Action Podcast,
12:11where we take a look at all the latest goings-on at Brighton, Hove, Albion and Crawley Town.
12:14I'm Matt Powell and I'm joined by Brighton writer Darren Howard,
12:17Crawley Town expert Mark Dunford and Sam Morton, who covers both Albion and the Reds.
12:21A second-half goal from João Pedro saw Brighton come from behind to draw one-all at Arsenal
12:25after the hosts had Declan Rice sent off in an entertaining game in north London on Saturday.
12:30We'll pick over the bones of Albion's draw at the Gunners,
12:32and the Gunners plus will reflect on a bad day at the office of Crawley in League One.
12:36You can read all the stories we are talking about with videos and pictures

12:47You may also be watching latest TV. So thank you very much for tuning in.
12:50And this week we will start at the Emirates where Albion held 10-man Arsenal
12:54in another game filled with controversy.
12:56Kai had that slot for Bruggen for the Gunners 38th minute opener,
12:59but the game completely changed after Rice was dismissed for a second yellow card
13:03in the 49th minute for delaying a free kick being taken by Joel Veltman.
13:07Brighton piled on the pressure after that point and drew level in the 58th minute
13:11when Yancuba Mint's shot was parried into the path of Pedro by David Rea.
13:15The Brazilian striker slotted the ball under the keeper.
13:18From that alone, Darren, I think we can ascertain it was a breathless game.
13:21Try and sum that one up for us.
13:23Yeah, it was a great game to watch.
13:27A good one for the neutral.
13:31A pretty good performance from Brighton.
13:33At the beginning, it looked as though Arsenal were going to run all over them, really.
13:38They looked really dangerous going forward.
13:42Jack Hinchinwood was playing at left back and he was having a tough time up against Saka.
13:47But I was impressed how Hinchinwood stuck to his task, really, against Saka.
13:53I think he can do any full-back in the world, Saka.
13:57He's so dangerous and I thought Hinchinwood actually played him quite well.
14:02Throughout the game, I thought he grew into it and looked pretty good.
14:06So, credit to Hinchinwood for that one.
14:09But, yeah, Brighton stuck at it.
14:11I think under previous managers, under Di Zerbi,
14:13they might have wilted under the pressure a bit,
14:16but they looked a bit more solid against Arsenal.
14:20Like you say, they went down 1-0 to a good goal from Havertz
14:25and then the sending off changed it,
14:28which caused a lot of controversy.
14:31There was a lot of opinions on it either way.
14:33Both the pundits, I think it's Keown and Peter Crouch,
14:37that were there for TNT Sports,
14:39they were saying that Veltman did a little bit of a job on Declan Rice
14:45and made more of it than he could have.
14:48He wasn't really intended to take the free kick,
14:50but he pretended that he was and Declan Rice kicked it away,
14:53which obviously Declan Rice was in the wrong.
14:55So, it was one of those really where I think both players,
14:59they know what they were doing and this time it went Veltman's way.
15:05He knew that he was already on a booking and, yeah,
15:09Declan Rice took the bait really.
15:11He's an experienced player.
15:12He probably should have known better, but it all happened quite quickly.
15:15He probably didn't expect a second yellow for it.
15:18But, yeah, and then it turned.
15:20Brighton then went on the offensive.
15:22They had more of the ball going forward
15:25and got a deserved equaliser really.
15:28And, yeah, then it could have gone either way.
15:31Arsenal were very good on the counter-attack,
15:33but Brighton probably didn't create as many chances as they wanted to.
15:37And at the end of the day, 1-1, a fair result.
15:40And, yeah, now it's an international break
15:44and then Ipswich Town after the international break.
15:47Mighty Ipswich Town.
15:49But, yes, going back to the Rice red card, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta
15:54criticised the lack of consistency in the decision
15:56and said Veltman should have also seen red in the same incident.
15:59What did you make of this incident, Sam?
16:01Was Veltman lucky not to see red or was it wily play from the Dutchman?
16:06Yeah, it was a bizarre moment, really,
16:08because I was there watching the game actually in the stadium.
16:11And as it happened, it looked like Joel Veltman was about to be sent off
16:14when you kind of saw the incident unfold
16:16and kind of all the Arsenal players surrounded him
16:18for what looked like a kick out of Declan Rice.
16:21But, obviously, when you saw the replay, you actually saw what happened
16:25and what was obviously going on in the referee's mind.
16:29And, obviously, he's obviously pulled Declan Rice up
16:32for obviously delaying play, wasting time.
16:35But I think it was a bit of both, really.
16:37Veltman obviously knew what he was doing, as has been said.
16:40And he was definitely clever in that moment.
16:43I wouldn't necessarily say he did kick out of Rice,
16:45because I think he had his eyes on the ball.
16:47It seemed like he was going for the ball to take the free kick.
16:50And, obviously, Rice stepped in front of him
16:52to try and knock the ball out of play.
16:54So, yeah, I don't think Veltman deserved the red,
16:56but it's certainly harsh on both sides.
16:58But by the letter of the law, as Mikel Arteta actually admitted,
17:02you can see why Rice was sent off.
17:04But his biggest problem was the lack of consistency,
17:06as you just mentioned, that in the first half,
17:08João Pedro booted the ball after it had already gone out of play
17:13towards the Arsenal goal, and he wasn't penalised for it.
17:16So you can kind of understand the anger and frustration
17:19as a result of that lack of consistency from the referee, really.
17:22You can let one player get away with it, but not the other.
17:25So, yeah, I think there's definitely two sides to that.
17:28But I think, yeah, I think you can see why Rice was sent off.
17:31And it was a huge, huge moment in the game, obviously,
17:34as it proved to change the game completely.
17:37So, Sir Veltman kicked a player
17:41after the ball was just touched away from him before he did it.
17:44Isn't that what Brighton fans were claiming all about Jay Williams the other day?
17:48I know it's slightly different.
17:50Jay Williams was a much heavier challenge, different circumstances.
17:53But it was just a heavy challenge, mistimed badly by Jay Williams
17:57because a player touched the ball away before he got there.
18:00So, all you Brighton fans, I welcome your comments.
18:04But, yeah, I think there's not too much difference.
18:07But Declan Rice should have been sent off. Veltman should have been sent off.
18:10And that's my argument.
18:13Yeah, well, that's an interesting one, isn't it?
18:15Because, yeah, you're right.
18:17Williams was hammered for the tackle that he put in.
18:20I think a lot of it is because of what actually happened to O'Reilly as well.
18:24If O'Reilly had looked straight back up, he would have been OK.
18:28But because he's got to have ankle surgery, I think that caused a lot of the anger.
18:32But, yeah, you're right.
18:35Veltman could have potentially injured Declan Rice by doing that.
18:39I think Veltman knew what he was doing.
18:41Oh, absolutely. He was very clever.
18:43He wasn't trying to take a quick free kick at all.
18:46He was trying to get one over on Declan Rice.
18:50So, yeah, it's an interesting one.
18:53It's a good debate. And, yes, I'm sure there will be some Brighton fans commenting.
18:57Healthy debate, hopefully, not abuse. We don't want any of that, please.
19:01Oh, I'll be getting abuse. Don't worry about that.
19:03My point of view is that you can go and kick him around as many Arsenal players as you want.
19:07I actively encourage it. Brilliant. More of that, at least.
19:11Anyway, going back to the game itself,
19:13João Pedro's equaliser at the Emirates was his second goal in three Premier League games this season.
19:17How impressed have you been with his early season form, Darren?
19:20Do you think he can break last season's tally of 20 in all competitions on current form?
19:25Yeah, I think he can.
19:27He's looked really, really sharp.
19:30And he was called up into the Brazil squad today as well and richly deserved.
19:37Hurlitzer mentioned it after the Arsenal game.
19:39He was disappointed that Pedro hadn't been called up.
19:43And then the other Pedro who plays for Brazil from Flamengo,
19:47he picked up an injury whilst training.
19:50And, yeah, so the Brighton Pedro has now been called up and will travel to face him.
19:55It causes a bit of a problem because now Pedro will be playing,
19:58I think it's on Wednesday night, they play Paraguay at about one in the morning UK time.
20:03And then they play Ipswich on the Saturday.
20:07So I saw a couple of tweets trying to look at the flight times
20:10and connecting to see whether he can be back in time to play against Ipswich,
20:15which could be a bit of a stretch.
20:17So, yeah, I think everyone at Brighton will be pleased for him.
20:21He's started the season so well.
20:24It looks a real threat.
20:25He plays in this number 10 role.
20:27Danny Welbeck is further forward.
20:30Pedro plays in behind Danny Welbeck.
20:32And then obviously you've got Mitoma on one side, Minter on the next.
20:36So it's quite a potent attack that Brighton have got there.
20:39And particularly against Manchester United, I thought Pedro was brilliant.
20:44In the second half, he just sort of thought, well, I'm going to do this on my own.
20:49And he took the game by the scruff of the neck, as they say.
20:52And he really started running at the defence and playing in his passes.
20:56And he's also a goal threat as well.
20:58I think he's absolutely the full package.
21:01They bought him for 30 million last season from Watford.
21:04And I think he played, he did very well last year.
21:07Like you say, 20 goals in all competitions.
21:09And I think he's going to go on another step this year.
21:13And he could potentially be one of the players that Brighton may struggle
21:17to keep hold of next summer.
21:20So I think he's going to be, hopefully he stays fit.
21:24And I think he's going to have a great season.
21:27I think I'd have to agree with you there, Derek.
21:29But one Albion player who won't be appearing for his country is Lewis Dunk.
21:32The Seagull skipper has been left out of interim England manager
21:35Lee Carsley's squad for the Nations League doubleheader
21:37against Evan Ferguson's Ireland and Finland.
21:39What do you make of that decision, Sam?
21:41And is that curtains for Dunk's England career, do you think?
21:45I would say so, yeah.
21:46I'm not overly surprised that he's not in the squad.
21:48I mean, he didn't make a single appearance for England, obviously, in the Euro.
21:52So you can kind of understand this decision, really.
21:55He's getting to the point of his career when he's obviously not going to be
21:58the first choice defender for England.
22:00I think then, as obviously they look for a new permanent manager,
22:03and obviously Carsley there at the moment,
22:05I think they're going to try and bed in some younger defenders, I think,
22:08to try and mould into the England set-up and to see them progress
22:13through their national career, really.
22:15I think it doesn't serve many purposes to have someone there in Dunk
22:19who's not really going to play in these big games,
22:21as he didn't have a single minute in the Euro.
22:23So I think there's probably not a lot of point in him being there, really,
22:25and he can focus on Brighton.
22:27And obviously, I guess that's part of his career, really,
22:30kind of make the most of what he's got left, really.
22:33Because obviously, as we see, he's still got brilliant talent, really,
22:37and can make a real difference, as we saw with that key pass to Minter
22:41in the Arsenal game that obviously led to the goal.
22:44It was a bit of redemption for him, as obviously he did make a big error
22:47for that opening goal from Havertz, whereas it was just a long ball forward,
22:51really, that he just failed to deal with.
22:53And it was almost like he was out-muscled by Saka,
22:55who's almost half of his size.
22:57So it was definitely a bad moment for Dunk,
22:59and he's had a few dodgy defensive moments, but they are rare,
23:03and he usually is so composed.
23:05And it was a shame he didn't get any minutes for England at the Euros,
23:08but I think now it's really time for England to move on
23:11and get some young players in, and I completely understand
23:14the decision not to include him this time around.
