00:32Hello, I'm Sam Morton, reporter for Sussex World.
00:35I've just watched Brighton beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-2
00:37in a sensational comeback victory that did not seem likely at all
00:42after the first half where Spurs took a two goal lead
00:45with Brendan Johnson and James Madison getting the goals
00:48and they could have had a third goal with the chance towards the end of the first half.
00:51I felt that Brighton were still missing something and a little bit suspect defensively
00:55like they were at Stamford Bridge, but they fought back superbly.
00:58A couple of changes at half-time and they were a completely different team in the second half
01:02with Jan-Cooper Minter getting on the score sheet
01:05and Jorginho Rutter with a brilliant finish to make it 2-2
01:09and Danny Welbeck making it 3-2 from Rutter's cross
01:12and it was brilliant to be there at the Amex.
01:15It was an awesome atmosphere, the crowd was wild by the time the third goal went in
01:19and it was a superb game really and Brighton really did have to fight
01:23to get back into that game with some brilliant goals, brilliant performances.
01:27Karim Atoma especially took my eye.
01:29He was brilliant throughout the game.
01:31He was probably Brighton's biggest threat I think in that first half
01:35but especially in the second half.
01:36He got an assist and it was his cross that led to the first goal as well
01:40and on another day he could have got on the score sheet.
01:42He looked really back to his best.
01:44It was a nice link-up play with Pervis at Stupinan
01:46who came on as a second-half substitute
01:48and great to see him with a good performance as well.
01:50For all of our play ratings and match reaction, see sussexworld.co.uk
01:55Fans and players all stood to applaud former Brighton manager Barry Lloyd
02:00who died in September at the age of 75.
02:03Lloyd guided the club to promotion from the third division in 1988.
02:08He also took them against all the odds to within one game of the top flight in 1991
02:13as they reached the play-off final.
02:15There will now be a period of applause that will start at the end of the referee's whistle
02:20as we send our thoughts and love to Barry's family and friends at this saddest of times.
02:46There was also a special guest at Brighton vs Spurs
02:50as former player Pascal Grosz returned to say a proper goodbye
02:54as he left to join boyhood club Borussia Dortmund in the summer.
02:57Grosz was Brighton's all-time leading Premier League scorer with 30 goals
03:01and will go down as one of the best players in the club's history.
03:04Would you like to say something to the fans?
03:07Thank you very much for everything.
03:11You've been unbelievable at all times.
03:13You've supported us.
03:15And all I want to say is goodbye.
03:17And in Germany we say you're always each other at least twice in life.
03:21So maybe one day, and I hope you create a special atmosphere today for the lads.
03:27Let's win this game.
03:32Please give yourself a round of applause.
03:34Pascal Grosz!
04:11We'll bring you all the latest from Rob Elliott's first two games in charge of Crawley Town.

04:29So thank you very much for tuning in.
04:30But starting at the Amex, second half goals from Jankuba Minter,
04:34Jorginho Ritter and Danny Welbeck saw Albion fight back against Spurs on Sunday.
04:39I believe you were at the Amex, Mr Morton.
04:42If you can, sum that game up for us, please.
04:46Yeah, it was another thrilling game involving Brighton.
04:49Following the game at Stamford Bridge, it was another goal fest.
04:53This one, Brighton obviously came out on top and it was a really enjoyable game.
04:56The first half was a bit of a disaster once again for Brighton,
05:00a bit like Stamford Bridge, where Spurs just really looked like they were going to score
05:05every time they attacked.
05:06And it was one of those days for Brighton where they once again were missing van Hecke in the defence.
05:12Adam Webster was kept in the team alongside Lewis Dunk,
05:16but Webster did golf with an early injury and Igor replaced him.
05:20But it was much the same, really.
05:22It just weren't quite at ease defensively and Spurs looked like they could score
05:27every time they went forward, as I say.
05:28And they got a couple of goals and it looked like the game was dead and buried, to be honest.
05:34But Brighton came out a completely different team in the second half
05:38and it was a remarkable turnaround, really.
05:41Jan-Cooper Minter got the goal they really needed right at the start of the second half
05:45after a mistake by Destiny Udovi at the back.
05:48And it didn't take long, it was only 10 minutes later for Jorginho Rutter to score
05:53from a pass from Karim Otome, who was my man in the match.
05:56I think he was superb, even in the first half.
05:58Otome was the biggest threat for Brighton and he really did come to life,
06:01especially in that second half as well.
06:04And then Rutter, once again, showed some very tenacious play on the right-hand side,
06:08battled his way past a few Spurs defenders and then crossed it in for Danny Welbeck
06:12to head in the winner.
06:13And it was an awesome game, really.
06:15That kind of atmosphere and everything.
06:18And that third goal winning was among the best highlights of my time covering Brighton, really.
06:22It was really an excellent occasion and a superb comeback that really was needed
06:27in the circumstances.
06:28And yeah, it was a really enjoyable game.
06:31I can imagine completely, Sam.
06:33New boy Rutter, you spoke about him.
06:35He netted his second Albion goal in as many games against Spurs.
06:38Darren, is the Frenchman beginning to justify the club record £40m fee
06:42that Albion paid Leeds in the summer?
06:44I know there were quite a lot of question marks over that fee.
06:47Yeah, there have been.
06:49And I thought it was a bit harsh, to be honest.
06:53Obviously, they did pay a lot of money for him, £10m more than they paid
06:56for Jal Pedro when he joined from Watford in 2023.
07:01But yeah, there were a few question marks and there were a few snap judgments,
07:06especially after his home debut against Ipswich.
07:10I did a piece yesterday on it, actually, where I thought on his debut,
07:14he actually played quite well against Ipswich.
07:16And he had a couple of chances and it didn't quite go their way.
07:21And he became the scapegoat for a lot of fans for the back-to-back draws
07:27against Ipswich and against Nottingham Forest.
07:29But I've always thought that I always quite liked him.
07:33I thought there were encouraging signs from him.
07:35And I was really pleased to see him.
07:37It was a mad game at Chelsea where they lost 4-2.
07:40But I was really pleased to see him get off the mark against Chelsea.
07:44And he carried that good form into the Tottenham game.
07:48Every sort of major player, when you come in to a club for a big money move,
07:52they need to make a statement early on.
07:54And I think that was his game where he actually laid down a marker
07:58and showed the fans that this is what I can do.
08:01I've got the class to finish the goals.
08:04His goal was very nice.
08:05It was a well-taken effort with his left foot.
08:10And I think he also showed that not only has he got the class
08:14to take those types of chances and the ruthless finish,
08:17but he's going to work for the team tirelessly as well.
08:21And I like the fact that when he got that assist for Danny Welbeck,
08:25the crowd were going mad.
08:26Everybody was jumping on Danny Welbeck.
08:28And Lewis Dunk made a point of ignoring all the celebrations for Welbeck,
08:32went over to Rutter and really showed his appreciation for what he'd done.
08:38And I think you can tell the way he's integrating into the team,
08:42the way the teammates have taken to him.
08:45I think they like him.
08:46They know they've got a player on their hands.
08:49Danny Welbeck's nicknamed him Velcro as well,
08:52because the ball always sticks to him as well.
08:55And he does so much good work in a build-up play.
08:58And that's why they brought him in.
08:59You look at his goals record over his career at Leeds.
09:03He wasn't prolific, but his assist rate was incredible while he was at Leeds.
09:08Now he's adding goals to his game as well as that build-up play.
09:12I think that was a major performance from Rutter and one that will help them
09:17not only cover the loss of Jal Pedro while he's injured,
09:21but will be a big player for Brighton going forward this season.
09:24Yeah, he showed great personality as well, didn't he?
09:26Because he was probably at fault for that first goal when he was robbed off the ball.
09:30He gave it away.
09:31And he kind of felt a lot of players might suffer from that
09:35and maybe put their heads down a bit.
09:36But you never would tell from his performance after that,
09:38the confidence he showed to dribble with the ball.
09:40He wasn't kind of put off and didn't want to get rid of the ball wordy.
09:43He was still taking players on.
09:45And it was a joy to watch, really.
09:47And obviously getting the goal and assist,
09:48he more than made up for the little error I see at the start.
09:51So, yeah, I think really promising side of him.
09:54Yeah, absolutely.
09:56Yeah.
09:57He's a great guy as well.
09:58When you interview him as well and speak to him,
10:00he's a really chilled out, happy, smiley guy as well.
10:04So, yeah, really pleased for him.
10:06Yeah, he's surprised to be happy and smiley after living in Leeds
10:08for any prolonged amount of time.
10:09So, good on him.
10:10I don't think I'd be particularly happy.
10:12But, yeah, you mentioned that he set up Welbeck's goal
10:15and that goal against Spurs was his 71st in the Premier League,
10:18moving him ahead of Man United icon Eric Cantona,
10:20which I was quite surprised about.
10:22I just assumed that Cantona would have scored more.
10:24But he's looking indispensable, isn't he, Sam, at the moment?
10:27Yeah.
10:28He's been class this season, Welbeck.
10:30Absolutely brilliant.
10:31Yeah, he seems to have had a second win
10:33because I think probably a lot of people would have expected him
10:35to maybe have a bit more of an impact sub role this season
10:40because, obviously, with the signings that Brighton have made,
10:42especially in those attacking areas,
10:44you probably would have been surprised to see that Welbeck
10:47started every single game so far.
10:50But he's got four goals in seven games,
10:52which is more than justified that.
10:54He's been definitely one of the star players so far this season.
10:57It just shows that he's still got that class
11:00and he really is making a huge difference in key moments.
11:03But his goal against Spurs put him second in the all-time Premier League
11:08charts for goals for Brighton.
11:10So he's just behind Pascal Gross now,
11:12who is obviously there to watch the action as well against Spurs,
11:15which is really nice as well.
11:16And it's great to see him back and watch on as Welbeck edges
11:19a little bit closer to his tally.
11:21But he's quickly become the cult hero for Brighton.
11:24As I say, Welbeck is just so important
11:29and it doesn't seem to matter who they sign,
11:31he still remains that vital cog of that attacking unit.
11:35And just he's been obviously able to help the younger players
11:38so much as well with his experience.
11:40So I think it's been brilliant to keep him at the club
11:42for as long as they have done.
11:44And yeah, he's been a brilliant player for them.
11:46And speaking of the game, you said he wasn't happy,
11:48obviously, with the first half,
11:49but he was happy to obviously get that comeback in the second half.
11:53And he's obviously been in the league since he was very young
11:56and he's always been able to help the players.
11:58He's on four goals this season and he wants more.
12:00So he's definitely showing no signs of slowing down,
12:02which is really great to see.
12:04I'm going to out you as a Man United fan now, Sam Morton.
12:09I don't know if we've ever revealed that on the podcast before.
12:13Do you think he's playing better football than he did
12:15when he was at Man United and Arsenal?
12:18I think so. I think he's developed as a Premier League striker.
12:21I think he's obviously still very raw when he was at Man United.
12:25Obviously, the talent that Man United had at the time
12:27when he was at the club was incredible
12:29and obviously fighting for competition,
12:31fighting for places and everything like that.
12:32But I think as time's gone on,
12:34the experience he now has under his belt,
12:36he's the best he's ever been.
12:37I think he really is in the form of his career.
12:39He's staying fit as well, isn't he?
12:42He's having a run where he's fit as well.
12:44When he was at Arsenal, they couldn't keep him fit.
12:46And I think this is a good run for him.
12:48Watford, he struggled with his fitness,
12:50but now he's had his injury troubles at Brighton.
12:53But I think this season in particular,
12:55he's looked so sharp, so fit.
12:57And, yeah, they're getting the benefits of it.
13:00Yeah, just to follow up on what Bartley said,
13:02I think no one's going to get in over Kane, is it?
13:04That's the problem.
13:05I think any England striker,
13:06even Watkins and Ivan Toni have struggled
13:08to get any regular minutes for England.
13:10I think Kane's obviously that man and does that role.
13:12So I think it doesn't seem to matter
13:13how well the England strikers do.
13:15I think Kane's obviously the man.
13:16But yeah, no, I definitely wouldn't be adverse to it
13:18if he did get an opportunity before the end of his career.
13:21Absolutely.
13:22And I don't think that's a terrible shout either,
13:23because he's clearly got the experience,
13:25hasn't he, Danny Welbeck?
13:26And he'll clearly do a good job around the younger players.
13:28So, yeah, I'd be happy with that, Mr Carsley.
13:31Next England manager.
13:32Next England manager.
13:33Yeah, yeah.
13:35We've spoken a lot about the players,
13:37Darren, in the Spurs game.
13:38But how much credit does Hazela deserve
13:40for instigating such an astonishing turnaround?
13:43It's probably all well and good of us saying this now
13:45after they'd won.
13:46But at half-time, I imagine quite a few knives were out.
13:49I imagine.
13:50Yes, it was a big test for him.
13:53As we mentioned, they'd drawn two or two on the bounce
13:56against teams where they should have got
13:59probably three points against Ipswich
14:01and Nottingham Forest.
14:02So morale was a bit low.
14:04Then they went to Chelsea and just had that chaotic,
14:07you know, disastrous defensive display
14:10at Stamford Bridge.
14:12And I think they still had a, you know,
14:14that was still on their minds.
14:15They were still having a bit of a hangover
14:17from that Chelsea display into the Tottenham.
14:19And when they went 2-0 down,
14:21it would have been easy for them to say,
14:23oh, you know, this just really isn't working out.
14:26And they could have collapsed.
14:27It could have been a bad time for Hazela.
14:33I guess, you know, no matter what you say at half-time
14:35in those instances, he was saying, you know,
14:38just trust the process.
14:39Win your small gains, win your personal jewels
14:42and the rest will follow.
14:44And you could say that as much as you like,
14:46but to get that goal straight after half-time
14:50was huge for him.
14:51When Minter, his first goal of the season as well
14:54for Brighton in the Premier League,
14:56to get that early goal just got everybody back up again
14:59and gave them belief.
15:00The crowd then were on their side
15:03and it really helped to lift them.
15:05So as much as Hazela may have said a few things
15:09at half-time, just they needed that bit of luck as well
15:12or that bit of fortune that went their way
15:15when, was it N'Doggy, Sam, the Tottenham defender,
15:18he tried to clear it and it ricocheted to Minter.
15:21Yeah, he kind of got half-cleared.
15:25Yeah, that was a lucky break.
15:27And to get that goal, and that could now give them
15:30the catalyst and the confidence to go on
15:32and really give them a boost.
15:34And with some of the injured players now coming back,
15:37they've got a week or so now to get, you know,
15:40the likes of Soli March, Van Geck, Jal Pedro,
15:42hopefully, to get back in contention.
15:45And they can really attack this next period of the season
15:48after the international break, starting at Newcastle,
15:51with a lot of confidence.
15:52So, yeah, that was a big, big moment for Hazela.
15:55And I think, as you say, the knives were, you know,
15:58not coming out, but, you know,
16:00there were a few question marks being raised.
16:03So, yeah, big moment.
16:05Last question for Brighton before we go into part two.
16:09As Deren mentioned, we now go into the October
16:11international break, and Brighton 6-6 in the Premier League
16:14after taking 12 points from seven games.
16:17How would you rate Albion's season so far, Sam?
16:19Deren's kind of mentioned that it's been quite flat
16:23up until recently, I suppose, until the Tottenham game.
16:25How would you assess it?
16:27Yeah, it's been a bizarre one, hasn't it?
16:29Because it started so well in August,
16:31and obviously Hazela got the manager of the month,
16:35and it all started brilliantly.
16:37I think you made the comment, Matt, didn't you,
16:39that's kind of cursed them a little bit
16:41in the coming weeks and months.
16:43And that did seem to happen.
16:44I think we all feared a repeat of what we saw
16:47so often in recent seasons in those games against Ipswich
16:51and Forest, where they dropped those points
16:53at home in games they should be winning.
16:55And we really did see that once again.
16:58And obviously that game at Chelsea raised more questions
17:00about the high line, which we again saw
17:03in the early stages against Spurs.
17:04I think literally a minute into the game,
17:06I think Brendan Johnson nearly scored
17:08from where Brighton, playing the high line,
17:10the offside trap didn't work.
17:12And I think it was a slightly better ball
17:14from Werner would have meant a goal
17:16even earlier for Spurs in the game.
17:18So yeah, there's definitely still some question marks.
17:20You do wonder if they've got the players
17:22in defence that suits Herzog's style
17:25of that high line at the moment.
17:27So you wonder maybe he might look to bring
17:29in some extra reinforcements defensively
17:31in future transfer windows and that kind of thing.
17:34But as we've seen in modern day football,
17:36I think managers are very stubborn, aren't they?
17:38If they've got a set way of playing,
17:39they want it to work, they want to get the players
17:41to learn that way of playing.
17:43And it will take time.
17:44I think with Herzog being a young coach,
17:46a young manager, so I feel like hopefully
17:48it will improve as the season goes on.
17:50But you just hope that if it does continue
17:52and they are still having these problems defensively,
17:55then he does adjust it a little bit to what he has.
17:57And that will really show his now as a manager
18:01and obviously he'll be learning on the job all the time.
18:03So, yeah, you hope that he's not as stubborn
18:05as perhaps De Servi was in some of those key moments.
18:15Welcome back to part two.
18:16We're going to take a look at the latest
18:18from Crawley Town and Rob Elliott took charge
18:20of his first Reds game on Saturday,
18:22but he couldn't mastermind a Reds win
18:23at Wickham in League One.
18:25Fred Oyadin's goal was a difference
18:27between two sides as Wickham ran out 1-0 winners.
18:30You were at Adams Park, Mark Dunford.
18:32How was it?
18:33We've spoken a lot about them not being able
18:35to put their chances away.
18:36Was it more of the same?
18:38Yeah, it was really.
18:39They dominated a game for long periods.
18:42It was still very similar to how they played
18:45under Scott Lindsay.
18:46There was a few different tweaks
18:47and they actually had a couple of early chances.
18:49Will Swan had one quite early on.
18:51He's had very few chances to score
18:54since he's joined Crawley, but he had one quite early
18:57on where a keeper saved it.
18:58It was quite a tight angle.
19:01They played well for long periods,
19:03but it just seemed a little bit disjointed.
19:05There were obviously new ideas Rob Elliott
19:07and his team were trying to put into the squad.
19:09I think it was Ronan Darcy afterwards
19:11who said that they were trying to impress,
19:18I think, and Rob Elliott said they probably
19:20tried too hard and got carried away.
19:22So, yeah, it was a frustrating game,
19:25but they never looked like conceding much
19:27apart from the goal.
19:28Again, it was another poor goal.
19:30It was a player unmarked like six yards out
19:33and that's been the same for the opening goals
19:35for the last three games.
19:36I think it's Bolton, Mansfield and then that game
19:39where the ball came in and he was just unmarked
19:43and just had an easy job tapping home.
19:45So, yeah, frustrating goal to let in,
19:47but they never looked like scoring
19:49but never looked like conceding.
19:51So, there's promising signs there,
19:54but it was just a little bit frustrating
19:57and, yeah, a little bit disjointed.
19:59But Rob Elliott said afterwards, I think,
20:01that he said if they had won 3-0,
20:04it doesn't mean that they've changed
20:07something straight away.
20:08If they'd lost 3-0, it doesn't really mean anything.
20:11It's just a start.
20:12It's just a process and they're hoping
20:14they can get their ideas in sooner
20:16rather than later.
20:17You'd only have two days to work
20:19with the players before that.
20:20So, yeah, it's no surprise that it was
20:23a little bit disjointed,
20:24but there were lots of promising signs
20:25and, actually, I thought it was a little bit
20:27more attacking at times than under Scott Lindsay.
20:30So, yeah, promising signs there.
20:32You mentioned the trying too hard,
20:35as Rob Elliott said.
20:36Do you agree with that?
20:37I mean, I could see it being a bit
20:39understandable for the players
20:40trying to impress their new boss.
20:41I think it was, yeah.
20:42And like I said, Ronan Darcy sort of
20:44reiterated that a little bit.
20:46There was a lot of information to take on
20:49and I think Ronan Darcy said
20:51they were all a little bit worried
20:52that were they doing the right thing
20:54for the new manager and that.
20:55So they were obviously trying too hard
20:57to impress him and it just sort of meant
20:59that they were a little bit disjointed
21:01and it didn't flow as well as it normally
21:03does with a Crawley Town team.
21:05So I think we saw more signs of it
21:08on Tuesday night.
21:09We're getting on to that,
21:10but it seemed to flow a little bit more
21:13on Tuesday night.
21:14But he's obviously had a couple more
21:16days to work with.
21:17So come Saturday against Shrewsbury
21:20and then they've got a week off.
21:21So hopefully come the end of next week,
21:24you'll start to see real progression
21:26and a real identity of what a Rob Elliott
21:29side is.
21:30Absolutely.
21:31Well, you mentioned Tuesday.
21:32A much changed Crawley Town side
21:33succumbing to a 4-3 defeat at AFC
21:36Wimbledon, the EFL trophy.
21:38You were also at this game as well,
21:39Sam Morton.
21:40And again, it sounded like you had a thriller.
21:43I know.
21:44I've been very lucky with goals lately.
21:46It really did come out of nowhere.
21:48This one came out of nowhere actually
21:49because the first half was quite dull.
21:51I think Crawley had all the ball,
21:53passing the ball around
21:54and the fans were getting quite frustrated
21:56because they just wouldn't shoot.
21:57And there were chances for the fans
21:59just to have a go.
22:01It was quite funny.
22:02I was getting quite annoyed with somebody
22:04just shouting,
22:05Shoot! Shoot!
22:06That's all they could tell me.
22:08Yeah, it was one of those.
22:10It was definitely not the best of first halves
22:12and Wimbledon took the lead.
22:15It was actually coming.
22:17By the time Wimbledon scored,
22:18they'd had a number of chances.
22:19James Tiddy, the former Crawley man,
22:21did start to get a lot of the ball
22:23and start to really put some pressure
22:24on the Crawley defence.
22:25And they were completely missing
22:27for the goal that Wimbledon scored.
22:29And then you kind of felt that
22:31that would spark a bit of a reaction
22:32from Crawley,
22:33but it didn't.
22:34It didn't initially.
22:35And they got worse after the goal
22:37and they ended up conceding
22:38another two goals.
22:39They went 3-0 down.
22:40Two headers.
22:41You kind of feel the worst.
22:42You know, God,
22:43it's really bad at this point.
22:44Obviously losing 3-0 to your rivals
22:45in the lead below.
22:46And it was a strong team
22:47in Crawley as well.
22:48So, yeah,
22:49even though it's not
22:50the most important competition,
22:51it's a game they still would have
22:52wanted to win,
22:53get the confidence going again.
22:54But that third goal seemed to just
22:56spark a bit of life into Crawley
22:57and they suddenly reacted.
22:59Made some subs.
23:01Roland Darcy and Jeremy Kelly
23:02in particular came on
23:03and Armando as well.
23:04And all of them had a really big impact
23:06on the match.
23:07They were all guns blazing, really,
23:08going forward and just relentlessly
23:10attacking,
23:11shooting at every opportunity.
23:13And they managed to bring it back
23:15to 3-0.
23:16And it did really come out of nowhere
23:18and it felt like it could be
23:194-3, 5-3.
23:20Because of the amount of chances
23:21they had,
23:22it was incredible.
23:23But after getting that equaliser
23:24and you felt like,
23:25oh, yeah,
23:26there are only one team
23:27that's going to win this,
23:28Wimbledon started to be a threat
23:29on the counter-attack again.
23:30And you kind of felt like
23:31there was a chance
23:32that they might nick it.
23:33And they did.
23:34It was a cracking goal
23:35from Piggott
23:36in off the crossbar.
23:37And it was, yeah,
23:39a shame for it to end that way,
23:40really,
23:41after such a brilliant comeback
23:42to lose out in the end.
23:44But yeah,
23:45loads of positive signs
23:46that they can obviously
23:47score a goal again
23:48because it seemed like
23:49such a long time
23:50since they scored a goal.
23:51So to get free,
23:52to show the fighting spirit,
23:53to come back from 3-0 down,
23:54I think there's definitely
23:55some positives to take.
23:56But obviously, yeah,
23:57some defensive issues to iron out.
