00:00Ben Colbrook grew up skipping school to go to the races at Keeneland, and this weekend
00:06he'll saddle not just one, but two runners in Keeneland's premier derby prep race.
00:10We spoke with Colbrook about his two bluegrass contenders, Scooby Quondo and Raze Kane.
00:17This is my first runner in a bluegrass and to have two in it is even kind of crazier,
00:22but my first win was at Keeneland, my first stakes win was at Keeneland, and my first
00:27grade one was all at Keeneland, so it's been a lot of firsts here.
00:30Raze Kane's been great, and he came out of the Gotham in good shape, and he's had two
00:35nice works at the track here, you know, he's familiar with the surroundings, and he's won
00:39here before, so he's coming into the race really well.
00:42Hopefully there's some pace, and there looks on paper that there'll be some pace, and just
00:46hopefully from that outside post, just get over and kind of hopefully work out a trip
00:50like you did in the Gotham, where you can just kind of make that one run and hopefully
00:54sustain it, and, you know, just looking for a good race and something to build off of
00:58and hopefully go on to Churchill.
01:02Scooby's a little different because he's not as seasoned as Raze Kane, so, you know, we
01:06worked him a very aggressive work on the dirt, and he worked really, really well, Juan Machado
01:12was on him, thought he got over the dirt surface better than Tapita, you know, so Scooby on
01:18the dirt is a little bit of an unknown, but in the mornings he certainly seems like he
01:22really relishes the track.
01:24Talking with Andrew, the owner, he wanted to still give him a chance to kind of qualify
01:28for the derby, and he thought that we thought that the bluegrass, you know, timing-wise
01:32made more sense than waiting for the Lexington.
01:35You'd rather probably separate them, but at the same time, I mean, with races like this,
01:39you know, we kind of thought about the wood with Raze Kane, but I think on paper, there
01:44wasn't, like, one wasn't that much easier, so they were kind of similar races, so why
01:48ship, you know?
01:49They're both very quality horses, they have that in common, but I think Scooby's always
01:54showed a little bit more brilliance in his works.
01:56Raze Kane's always been kind of workman-like, you know, and just does everything you ask
02:00of him, and, you know, he's just very reliable.
02:03Scooby's certainly done nothing wrong so far, but he's just a little more inexperienced
02:07at this stage because he got a later start.
02:09It's a dream come true just to have a horse that's good enough to run on the bluegrass
02:13because I grew up, you know, watching the bluegrass as a kid, and, you know, it's one
02:18of the biggest reps for the derby, and it's here at home at our home track, so it's a
02:22big deal just to even be in the race, and we're super proud of that, and hopefully
02:26they both can give a good account of themselves, which I think they will.
