00:00The Legacy Equine Academy was created to get the next generation involved in horse racing
00:07and to bridge the historical contributions of African-American horsemen to the future
00:12of the industry.
00:13We spoke with founder Ron Mack to hear the story behind the organization and to learn
00:17about the big plans in store for its future.
00:21The Legacy Equine Academy's mission is to connect the history and the heritage of the
00:26black jockey to today's standards in the thoroughbred industry.
00:31What we do is we connect with Fayette County Schools.
00:34We have a partnership with them and really give kids of color and kids of diverse backgrounds
00:41the opportunity for access and exposure into the equine, equestrian, agriculture industries
00:48and expose them to all of the opportunities that we have in the horse capital of the world.
00:56As far as our field trip, we've had upwards of 50 or 100 kids to travel on the different
01:02field trips.
01:03And so we give kids the opportunity to go on site, whether it be horse tours, tours
01:09at Kentucky Horse Park.
01:11We took a go-chill busload of kids of about 50 down to the Kentucky Derby Museum in Louisville.
01:21The enthusiasm around our activities, our on-site visits, our tours, all of that is
01:27just so rewarding to see that you're really changing the mindset and exposing these kids
01:35to whether it's equine, agriculture or some other opportunities that are out there.
01:41We're so excited about this year's Legacy Ball, which is our fourth outing.
01:47This year, we're so excited to partner with Fasig-Tipton and have our event at that wonderful venue.
01:54And so on April 30th is our fourth Legacy Ball.
01:58We have had so much success in the past in that we're offering the public an opportunity
02:07to help us support the mission that we're on to educate our young people.
02:14The Legacy Ball, which is a high-end gala, turns into a real party.
02:20The growth of what we do, we continue to need transportation for the organization.
02:28We continue to need funding for the organization to offer a broader, bigger footprint.
02:34And so this is where the corporate and the industry can hop on board with us and support
02:41us.
02:42We've received a great deal of support from the likes of Spy Coast and Churchill Downs
02:47and Keeneland and many other organizations in the industry and the corporate industry.
