00:00Syrian demonstrators rallied Monday in the city of Al-Salam to protest against the recent
00:18Israeli incursions throughout the south of the country.
00:25Heavy fighting continues in the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, while M23 rebels claim
00:30early Monday to have captured the regional capital, the city of Goma.
00:37And Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum reveals that the United States deported 4,094 people
00:43last week, most of them Mexican.
00:50Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Caracas, Venezuela.
00:56We begin with the news, stay with us.
01:13In Syria, citizens demonstrated against the Israeli aggression that took place in the
01:17province of Quneitra, bordering the occupied Golan Heights.
01:21The demonstrators gathered in front of the headquarters of the police command in the
01:25city of Al-Salam to condemn the incursions carried out by the Israeli occupation troops
01:30throughout the south of the country.
01:33In addition, the protesters pointed out that these actions constitute a threat to Syria's
01:37sovereignty and a violation of international law.
01:40Meanwhile, the permanent representative of Syria to the United Nations, Qusay al-Dahak,
01:46recently called on the United Nations Security Council to take immediate action to force
01:50Israel to withdraw from the occupied territories.
01:58Following the opening of the Net Zarim corridor by the Israeli regime, tens of thousands of
02:02Palestinians returned to the destroyed northern part of Gaza Strip after more than 15 months
02:08of being forced to flee their homes.
02:13After more than a year living in refugee camps, in tents, schools, in an overcrowded
02:18and unhealthy living conditions, the Gazans are anxious to return to their homes, knowing
02:22that these have been destroyed.
02:25We thank God for our return.
02:26We are heartbroken because we have nothing left to cry about.
02:29They have drained our energy.
02:31I am tying my daughter to my hand so she won't be lost from me.
02:34Isn't this an injustice?
02:36I have lost five houses.
02:37We lost all our money.
02:40The most optimistic ones are grateful for the opportunity to come back and start from
02:44scratch, even after having lost everything.
02:51We have been waiting for this day for a year and for months.
02:54When I arrive in Gaza I will prostrate myself in gratitude to God.
02:58I walk and I don't feel tired with joy as if I am flying with joy we will return even
03:03over the rubble of our house.
03:05Our feeling is indescribable.
03:13From the early morning, displaced people have been returning on foot across al-Rashid, a
03:18street of at least 7 kilometers that goes from the south to the north of the Strip and
03:23which has witnessed dozens of massacres during 470 days of genocide.
03:30As you can see, all the displaced people from the Gaza Strip and the north, they walk on
03:35foot because they love their land and their homeland.
03:37They walk on foot.
03:38We love our land and we love our homes.
03:41Amidst immense joy, tears and prayers for the return to their homeland and the long-awaited
03:47reunion of family members who managed to survive, the Gazans hope to overcome the horror they
03:52have gone through and rebuild their lives.
03:58Heavy fighting continues in the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo while M23 rebels claim
04:04early Monday to have captured the regional capital city of Goma.
04:08Their claim comes minutes before arriving at a 48-hour deadline imposed by the group
04:13for the Congolese army to surrender their weapons.
04:16The rebels urge residents of Goma to remain calm and for members of the Congolese military
04:21to assemble at the central stadium.
04:24The M23 rebels' offensive in the heart of the mineral-rich region threatens to dramatically
04:29worsen one of Africa's largest wars and further displaced civilians.
04:35The United Nations says over a third of the population of North Kivu province, where Goma
04:40is located, are currently displaced and the capture of the city will likely exacerbate
04:45the situation.
04:51The M23 offensive in the Democratic Republic of Congo has sparked a wave of international
04:56outrage while the United Nations Security Council strongly condemned the presence of
05:01foreign forces in the eastern part of the country.
05:04Chinese Permanent Representative to the International Body, Fu Kong, called the March 23 movement
05:10to strictly adhere to the ceasefire agreement and to return to the path of a political solution.
05:15On the other hand, French President Emmanuel Macron also condemned the M23 offensives and
05:21called for an immediate return to the ceasefire and the protection of civilian populations.
05:26On its part, the East African community called for an extraordinary summit to address the
05:31crisis by bringing together regional leaders, including the presidents of the Democratic
05:36Republic of the Congo, Felix Shisekedi, and of Rwanda, Paul Kagame.
05:46In this context, the United Nations Humanitarian Coordination for the Democratic Republic of
05:51Congo, Bruno Le Marquis, and the Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations of the International
05:56Body, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, expressed their concern about the situation in the African
06:00nation.
06:01What is unfolding in Goma is coming on top of what is already one of the most protracted,
06:08complex, serious humanitarian crises on Earth, with close to 6.5 million displaced people
06:16in the country, including close to 3 million displaced people in North Cabo.
06:20In this situation and really at this critical juncture, the onus now is really about bringing
06:26about an immediate cessation of hostilities, with the fate of millions of civilians living
06:32in Goma being the priority, along, of course, with the safety and security of our UN.
06:40And now we have a short break coming up, but first remember you can join us on TikTok at
06:44TELUS for English, where you'll find news in different formats, news updates, and more.
06:48We'll be right back, stay with us.
06:50Welcome back to From the South.
07:14Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum informed Monday that last week the United States deported
07:204,094 people, most of them Mexican.
07:23Sheinbaum revealed that her government has been carrying out reconciliations and reaching
07:28agreements with the U.S. authorities, and stressed that mechanisms to deal with deportations have
07:33existed with Washington for a long time.
07:35The Mexican president highlighted that when the United States informed that there would
07:39be massive deportations, her administration set up assistance centers in the main border
07:45cities in order to deal with migrants.
07:47In all meetings with the U.S. officials, Mexico has called the United States government
07:52to respect human rights.
07:57On the other hand, the Mexican head of state prized the agreement reached between Washington
08:02and Colombia on the illegal migrants in the North American nation.
08:11They are calling a CILAC meeting, and we think it was good that in the end the governments
08:15of Colombia and United States reached an agreement, neither tariffs nor other mechanisms
08:19are good for anyone so finally what I understand is that last night an agreement was reached
08:24between both governments and that is good because finally dialogue must prevail.
08:38Respect and dialogue which is what we have sought in our relationship with the United
08:42States.
08:43Respect for our principles of defending our sovereignty, of defending Mexicans abroad,
08:48of guaranteeing human rights for those who arrive in our country and now, especially
08:52with this Mexico embraces you program.
09:06We always welcome Mexicans with open arms wherever they want to come to Mexico for reasons
09:11of deportation.
09:41The second T is part of the seven transformations plan proposed by President Nicolás Maduro
09:47and is activated a few days before the celebration of the national popular consultation to be
09:52held on February 2nd.
09:54More than 5,000 communes and communal circuits will propose and vote for community projects
10:00which will be financed by the national government.
10:11And today 27th, as they say there is no bad 27th, today January 27th I am activating T
10:33number 2 the transformation for the construction of human cities of good living, indeed, it
10:39would take several days to implement.
10:41I wanted to come to the reactivation of this project because I want to send a very powerful
10:46message.
10:46This is with you Ramirez, as Minister of Public Works and with all the entities, public and
10:52private companies and the people's power, all in perfect synchronization.
10:57Yesterday we experienced a natural phenomenon that occur every 400 years.
11:03All planets lined up in the sky and all looked at Venezuela.
11:08And they said Venezuela all is ok.
11:11And we have to align all productive forces in the country.
11:15This is now with you Mr. Minister Alex Sabe.
11:18You have to guarantee me the activation of all investment contracts to produce more cement,
11:23more steel bars, more blocks and more construction material, because we have to activate all
11:29the projects that were forced to stop due to the blockade, to the criminal sanctions
11:34and the economic war.
11:35And we have to finish each one of those project benefiting the people, those dealing with
11:40roads, transportation, public services.
11:43That's why I wanted to be here, to activate those projects.
12:04On the other hand, the Venezuelan President also referred to the implementation of a new
12:08time stamp project, a new stage of a system of territorial government characterized by
12:13a new system of democratic criminal government with the people.
12:34I ratify that we must set up in 90 days, tops, 3,334 rooms of popular self-government in
12:42all the territories and communal circuits of the country, and that we must receive the
12:46new 1x10, the new 1x10 will be territorial, it will be communal.
12:53So that the proposals, the needs, and the solutions come from the territory, so that
12:58people and national government come together for the healing and constructive action for
13:03progress, as it should be.
13:05And that is precisely what I announced on January 10, a new stage of a system of territorial
13:11government, a new system of democratic communal government with the people.
13:27The Brazilian Ministry of Health reported that so far this year the country has registered
13:3215 deaths due to dengue fever and more than 101,000 possible cases of the disease.
13:39In the state of Sao Paulo, 33 municipalities are under an emergency alert due to the proliferation
13:45of the mosquitoes that transmit the disease.
13:48In addition, the incidence of cases has increased in other states, such as Rio de Janeiro, Espírito
13:54Santo, Tequentins, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Paraná.
13:58To combat this crisis, the government of Sao Paulo implemented an emergency operation
14:03center aimed at mitigating the outbreak.
14:06Despite the situation, vaccination against dengue fever is still limited, and according
14:11to data from the Brazilian Immunization Society, of the 6.3 million doses distributed in the
14:16country, only 3.2 million have been applied.

14:57Welcome back from the south.
15:13The storm Herminia caused severe flooding in northwest France, mainly in the region
15:18of Brittany, forcing the evacuation of hundreds of peoples.
15:22The storm's heavy rains, accompanied by wind gusts of up to 120 km per hour and strong
15:27waves, have left many homes without power and roads cut off.
15:32In this regard, more than 240 liters per square meter have accumulated in the northwest of
15:37France, 80% more than usual, which has forced the evacuation of residents around the area.
15:43The north of the country has been particularly affected by Herminia, with flights and trains
15:48cancelled and trees falling on the roads.
15:51On the other hand, the storm has also struck the city of Rennes, west of Paris, and heavy
15:56rains have left the region flooded after the Siege and Valienne rivers overflowed.
16:05In France, citizens demonstrated on Monday in front of the headquarters of the Sanitation
16:10Authority's S.I.B.A. in the town of Archecon against the project to discharge wastewater
16:18internation in the event of an overflow due to heavy rainfall.
16:21About 200 people protested in front of the headquarters of the Seydincat Intercommunal
16:27du Basin d'Archecon S.I.B.A., a local organization which is mainly responsible for wastewater
16:35treatment in the territory.
16:36The institution presented a project proposing to discharge sewage water into the Bay of
16:42Archecon in the event of a weather catastrophe.
16:45In this regard, oyster unions, representatives of environmental associations and local citizens
16:50protested against this project while holding banners and chanting slogans, generating a
16:56significant turmoil.
17:02The state has not been able to force S.I.B.A. to meet its obligations.
17:06What's more, the government has gone even further.
17:08Not only has it failed, it has been unable to enforce compliance with the environmental
17:13code and other applicable legislation.
17:15But secondly, and this is where we are surprised, since the 15th of January it has authorized
17:20S.I.B.A. to overflow the safety basins by up to 5% of the volume of wastewater and the
17:25total volume of wastewater.
17:33There are also viral problems, as we had last year and in 2021 with the norovirus, a gastroenteritis
17:40virus, where the health consequences were much more serious.
17:43But that's just the tip of the iceberg.
17:45You have to realize that wastewater contains all the crap you can throw at it, and the
17:49impact on the marine environment is catastrophic for us.
17:55The Russian government stated that any Western force sent to Ukraine without Moscow's approval
18:00would become a legitimate military target.
18:03Russian authorities denounced that the proposal for the creation of so-called peacekeeping
18:08forces in Ukraine is aimed at preventing Kyiv from suffering further defeats while
18:13maintaining its position of not negotiating with Moscow.
18:17The Russian statements come in response to a proposal made by the European Union military
18:22committee that a ceasefire in Ukraine should be imposed with the intervention of so-called
18:27peacekeepers.
18:28The statements are in line with calls by the Kyiv government to deploy at least 200,000
18:34European troops to force Moscow to halt its special operation to demilitarize Ukraine.
18:44In southern Poland, a tremor in a coal mine in the city of Ratlin killed one worker and
18:49injured 11 others.
18:51This Monday, Polish mining group PGG reported a tremor at a depth of 800 meters.
18:57According to the mining company's report, 29 employees were in the area of the incident.
19:02After rescue works, the 11 injured were taken to the nearest hospital.
19:07In this context, the head of the emergency medical services of Katowice said that at
19:12least four of the injured are in serious condition.
19:15Authorities added that work continues to determine the total damage and secure the area.
