00:37Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum assured that the migrant flow has decreased and urged
00:42to keep working with the next president of the United States.
00:53Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Caracas, Venezuela.
00:59We begin with the news, stay with us.
01:15In the United States, several ballot boxes with hundreds of early voting ballots were
01:19burned in two states just days before the presidential election on November 5th.
01:25Police in the states of Oregon and Washington reported that they are investigating the burning
01:30of several ballot boxes as the early voting process in the country continues.
01:34Authorities detailed that the fires in both states were found to have been set by an incendiary
01:41device and explained that they recovered enough material from the devices to prove that the
01:46two incidents are related to each other.
01:49It is important to note that the ballot boxes were equipped with working fire suppression
01:55systems at the polling place in the city of Portland.
01:59However, for unknown reasons, they were not activated to prevent the ballot's destruction
02:04at the Vancouver polling station.
02:14During her fortnightly podcast, Your Political Economy Hour, political economist Radhika
02:19Desai interviewed former central banker Kathleen Tyson, who is also author of the book Multicurrency
02:26Mercantilism.
02:27During the interview, the former central banker gave her impression about the recently concluded
02:33BRIC summit and stressed that the bloc is not looking for a new currency but to trade
02:38in local currencies of its members.
02:41The Johannesburg declaration last year was perfectly clear that the BRICs want local
02:47currency trade in their own currencies as the preferred objective, and to a great extent
02:55they've achieved that in important ways.
02:5953% of China's trade is now in yuan.
03:03Over 90% of trade between Russia and China is either in yuan or ruble, and other countries
03:09are making progress.
03:13In another part of her interview, Tyson highlighted the fact that the de-dollarization is not
03:19only a BRICs policy but a strategy followed by an increasing number of countries in the
03:23world as a matter of economic and national security.
03:2880 countries determined in 2023 to move to local currency trade as a matter of policy.
03:35So it's not just BRICs.
03:36It's also, I mean, I said this last month in Singapore, and I think it resonates, that
03:42currency optionality is now a matter of economic and national security.
03:49That no country wants the...
03:51Turkish security forces arrested 216 suspects of being linked to the Daesh terrorist group.
03:58The Turkish Interior Minister Ali Cagliari informed that several arrests have been made
04:04in Ankara, Antalya, Istanbul provinces, among other localities within the framework of the
04:09ongoing state investigations against the self-proclaimed Islamic State.
04:13The Turkish minister explained that the arrests would allow investigating the terrorist group's
04:18connections, recruitment and financing.
04:21In addition, the authority announced that the intelligence services continue to work
04:25to safeguard citizens from terrorist attacks.
04:31Tunisia now said it is reported that at least 15 bodies were found off the coast of the
04:38city of Madia, located in the east of the country.
04:42All signs indicate a new sinking of a boat with migrants.
04:47The bodies were found between Saturday and Sunday.
04:50In recent years, Tunisia has become the main departure point for migrant boats trying to
04:55cross the Mediterranean Sea to reach Europe.
04:59In this regard, the International Organization for Migration detailed that so far this year
05:04more than 1,000 people have died or have been reported missing while crossing the Mediterranean Sea.
05:15In Thailand, a court ordered the disposal of a case against former state security personnel
05:20and officials over the death of 85 Muslim protesters in 2004.
05:24While there was enough evidence for an indictment, the case was unable to proceed as no suspects
05:30were arrested and brought to the court.
05:32Therefore, the court issued a disposal order as the 20-year statute of limitations on Friday.
05:39The court's statement remarked that the order is not a dismissal of the charges against
05:43the suspects as they had never entered the legal proceedings but fled until the statute
05:49of limitations expired.
05:51The death denounced in the case occurred in 2004, shortly after a Muslim separatist insurgency
05:57erupted in Thailand's southernmost provinces of Naraithi, with Batani and Jala the only
06:04ones with Muslim majorities in the Buddhist-dominated region.
06:22In the Philippines, authorities reported 116 people dead following the passage of tropical
06:28storm Trami.
06:29According to data from the National Council for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management,
06:34there were also 109 injured while 39 are still missing.
06:39Authorities added that over one million people are sheltered in assistance centers after
06:44landslides and strong winds caused damage to thousands of houses.
06:49The Philippines Meteorological Agency warns about the arrival of a storm called Ray, with
06:54sustained winds of up to 95 km per hour, with forecasts of reaching typhoon category in
07:00the next 24 hours.
07:06In the UK, local press announced Monday that since October 16th, Wellborn Safari Park has
07:11taken care of the first eastern mountain, Bongo Gulf, in Bedfordshire, which is a main
07:17success to preserve that critically endangered species.
07:21The International Union for the Conservation of Nature, Red List, classified the forest
07:26antelope as critically endangered species as there are fewer than 100 eastern mountain
07:32bongo worldwide due to poaching and lost habitat.
07:36Therefore, Wellborn Safari Park mounted a breeding programme from which the male calf
07:42has been the first to be born in over 10 years, amounting to five the bongo herd at
07:47the park.
07:48By the time the calf grows up, he will be transferred to start a breeding group of his
07:54own.
07:55So far, vets said both bongo mom and calf are healthy.

08:43Welcome back.
08:45Lebanese Islamic resistance movement fighters bombed thousands of Israeli settlements in
08:49the northern occupied territories.
08:52Hezbollah confirmed that a volley of missiles was directed at military targets between the
08:57settlements of Al-Manara and Margalio.
09:00Before the attack, the Lebanese resistance issued for the first time an evacuation order
09:04to Israeli civilians occupying these Palestinian territories.
09:08In southern Lebanon, the inability of Israeli troops becomes evident.
09:12These operations generate new frictions between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence
09:17Minister Joe Afghan, who assured in an open letter that a war without a compass is being
09:22carried out.
09:28In Palestine, dozens of students and teachers died after being asphyxiated by an Israeli
09:33tear gas attack in the occupied southern West Bank.
09:37According to reports, the sirenist attack targeted a school in the town of Hebron, while
09:42school activities were in progress.
09:44The staff of the institution detailed that they had to evacuate the entire school community
09:49through alternate routes to ensure their safety.
09:52In this context, the secretary of the Fatah movement asserted that Israeli forces fired
09:57toxic gas canisters into the school, causing dozens of students and teachers to suffocate.
10:08Palestinians in the northern Gaza Strip are forced to flee following the escalation of
10:11attacks by the Israeli occupation forces.
10:14The Palestinian authorities announced that Israel increased its airstrikes in northern
10:19Gaza against civilian targets and homes for the last 24 days, causing several casualties.
10:25The consequences of the incursions and drone attacks by the Israeli regime are the massive
10:30destruction of the area and the poor conditions for survival following the lack of resources
10:35and emergency care in this area.
10:37Furthermore, local media reported that Israel has evicted all refugees from the shelters,
10:43forcing them to move.
10:44Gaza residents claim that the occupation forces have even prevented Palestinians from walking
10:50in the streets and are blocking access to water, medicine and food.
11:00The governments of Algeria and Egypt called for an Israeli ceasefire in the Gaza Strip
11:05and stressed the need to restore instability in the region.
11:09Algerian President Abdel Majid Tebboune supports Egypt's initiative for a ceasefire in Gaza
11:14and demands that Israel allow the entry of humanitarian aid and stop the extermination
11:19against the Palestinian people, while the President of Egypt Abdel Fattah el-Sisi affirmed
11:25that he maintains his position as mediator and said that the solution is to establish
11:30a Palestinian state.
11:32After their meeting in Cairo, the leaders discussed issues of bilateral interest and
11:36mainly their concern for security, stability and peace in the region.
11:45In Spain, over 40 senior state representatives attended on Monday the 9th Union for the Mediterranean
11:51UFM Forum held in Barcelona.
11:54The intergovernmental organization is made up of European Union member states and 16
11:59countries from the south and east of the Mediterranean, including Israel and Palestine.
12:05Notwithstanding, an Israeli authority participated at the event, unlike Palestine, which has
12:10been represented by its foreign minister, Barsan Aghabekian Shahin.
12:16The UFM group met for the second time to mainly address the war escalation in the Middle East
12:21in an attempt to settle disputes and reach regional peace.
12:26A number of foreign affairs and expatriates of Jordan, Yemen, Zafadi urged all presidents
12:31to stop the impunity of Israel.
12:33In addition, Josep Borrell supported that idea in his following statement, let's listen.
12:43This is a moment in which the neighboring countries of the Mediterranean have all made
12:46their voices heard, calling for a political solution to this conflict, which cannot be
12:50other solution, and in this as well we all agree, than a process leading to the creation
12:55of a state for Palestine, and here the key word is to implementation, not to proclaim
13:00the need, but to do what is necessary for this to happen, for 30 years.
13:04We have been proclaiming that this is the solution without acting decisively.
13:08To achieve it.

13:49Mexican President Claudia Chávez assured that the migrant flow has decreased and urged
13:54to keep working with the next president of the United States.
13:58The president stressed the need to cooperate with Washington on security issues such as
14:03fentanyl and arms trafficking across the border.
14:06Chayman also highlighted the differences between her administration and the different right-wing
14:11governments, saying that hers respect life.
14:15The head of SAID also affirmed that the lower number of migrants is the result of her government's
14:20strategy to address the root causes of the problem.
14:25The number of migrants arriving at the border has decreased due to a comprehensive strategy
14:33and also due to a strategy of repatriation to the places of origin.
14:46On December 23rd and 24th, we reached the highest number of migrants at the border,
14:51and now with this comprehensive strategy that we have been following, it has decreased significantly.
15:05We are working with governments of Central and South America to prevent migration and
15:10we will continue to insist on the bottom line which is the necessary attention to the root
15:14causes.
15:15Of course, we must also provide humanitarian attention.
15:19Our welfare institutions have very important shelters.
15:24Mexico's President Claudia Chayman expressed the need to work together with the new President
15:28of the United States to address issues such as fentanyl and security.
15:37It is always as we have said, it is coordination without subordination, coordination, dialogue
15:42and joint work to be able to especially address the issues that concern us both, particularly
15:51the issue of fentanyl in the United States, since it is a public health issue and it is
15:57necessary to address it for humanitarian reasons.
16:05President López Obrador brought it up at the time, and I also think it should be addressed,
16:10which is what happens on the other side of the border.
16:17So because there is organized crime here, there is a strategy, but what happens on the
16:21other side of the border, how fentanyl is sold in the United States.
16:29The Mexican head of state also assured that the national security strategy will provide
16:33positive results and will gradually pacify the areas where insecurity and violence are
16:38still reported.
16:43There is a security strategy that is going to provide results, as I have stated, it is
16:48not going to happen overnight.
16:50There has already been a lot of talk during the term of President López Obrador and there
16:54was a decrease in the number of homicides along the tendency, which is very important.
17:05There is still a debate about whether there was more in general.
17:08But the tendency is very important.
17:11It is not the same that homicides are increasing than decreasing.
17:18And we have committed ourselves to gradually decrease homicides because there is a strategy
17:23and we are going to progressively pacify the country in the areas where there are still
17:27problems of insecurity and violence.
17:33In particular, Sinaloa is a special case, because of what we already know, and there
17:38are other areas of the Republic where this issue is being taken care of.
17:44We go to Venezuela now, where the people is commemorating the three-month anniversary
17:48of President Nicolás Maduro's electoral victory in the presidential elections of July 28,
17:542024.
17:55The results presented by the National Electoral Council indicated that President Nicolás Maduro
18:00obtained 51.95% of the votes.
18:04The Venezuelan people's support for this victory was experienced with multiple mobilizations
18:09back in a third term of office for the head of state and with several activities that
18:14showed a genuine commitment to the Bolivarian movement.
18:24The first Vice President of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela, Diosdado Cabello, assured
18:29on Monday that the victory of President Nicolás Maduro on July 28 put a stop to fascism in
18:34the country.
18:38These three months of great victory put a stop to fascism.
18:46It set the bar high for fascism in Venezuela.
18:53Let's close our eyes in a nightmarish exercise and imagine the opposite, that here in Venezuela
18:58fascism had won.
19:04Venezuela would be the scenario of persecution of the militant men and women of the revolution.
19:11The first Vice President of the PSUV also assured that Venezuela managed to block fascism,
19:16while other Latin American peoples continue to struggle to free themselves from this evil.
19:25So Venezuela managed to block fascism in this part of our America while in other countries
19:30the people are fighting.
19:40For example, in Argentina, fighting against fascism and the forces that believe themselves
19:45to be absolutely superior, hegemonic and excluding.
19:50The Government of Venezuela advances in its food policies with the implementation of fares
19:55with affordable prices for the population in several municipalities of the country.
19:59Thousands of Venezuelan families benefited from the Campos Oberano open airfares where
20:05vegetables, proteins, toys and other products were sold at affordable prices.
20:10Recreational activities and medical attention services were also provided to the communities
20:14during the day, benefiting young people and senior citizens alike.
20:19The Campos Oberano fair seeks to strengthen the social protection of Venezuelan families.
20:29The President of Bolivia, Luis Arce, led a meeting with a high-level commission of the
20:34People's Republic of China in the framework of the Joint Economic and Trade Commission
20:38between the two countries.
20:40Through his social networks, the Bolivian head of state informed, today in Casa Grande
20:44del Pueblo we held an important meeting with a high-level commission of the fellow People's
20:50Republic of China, headed by the representative of international trade, Wang Shouwen.
20:55Within the framework of the Joint Economic and Trade Commission between both countries,
21:00we made progress on a work agenda that includes the export of Bolivian products to the Chinese
21:05market, investments, lithium, bricks and other issues for the benefit of our peoples.
21:17In Colombia, several indigenous groups created a coalition under the name G9 to defend the
21:22Amazon in the midst of the United Nations Biodiversity Conference COP16.
21:27The indigenous peoples of Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Guyana,
21:33and Suriname achieved political alignment through the G9, a coalition that aims to get
21:39the world's governments to recognize that indigenous communities are the main authorities
21:43when it comes to conserving ecosystems and protecting animal species.
21:48The Amazonian peoples called for the preservation of biodiversity as well as respect for their
21:53territorial rights and direct funding in recognition of their role as guardians of nature.
21:59The G9 comes at a time when negotiations on a new body that grants the rights of indigenous
22:04communities are under debate.
