00:39people live in acute poverty in the world today.
00:46Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:51We begin with news.
01:10Of the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas, Yad Yassinwar, was killed by Israel on Wednesday
01:15night in the Gaza Strip.
01:17The organization confirmed Yassinwar's assassination during confrontations alongside his fighters
01:22in the Tal al-Sultan area on Rafah.
01:25Israeli authorities made the claim earlier on Thursday, which was then backed by an address
01:32from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
01:34The authorities informed that a force of the 828th Brigade, which operated in southern
01:40Gaza, identified and eliminated three fighters and afterward, DNA testing had to be used
01:47to positively identify the body.
01:50Yassinwar, who became the organization's head after the Zionist regime killed former leader
01:55Ismail Hanija, during an attack to Iran in July, was allegedly the mastermind behind
02:01Hamas' al-Aqsa flood operation against Israel on October 7, 2023.
02:12Let's provide some information on Yad Yassinwar.
02:15He was born in the Cantonese refugee camp in southern Gaza in 1962.
02:21He left Israeli prisons after some 23 years there, took the Gaza Strip, loyal to the free
02:28people like all the leaders before him.
02:30He was martyred among his people, wearing his favorite military uniform, carrying his
02:36rifle and facing the occupation forces in Rafah.
02:40Yassinwar became the head of Hamas after Hanija was killed in July in an Israeli attack
02:45on Iran.
02:51Israeli strikes killed at least 28 Palestinians and an armed rascal sheltered displaced people
02:57in Havalia, in the northern Gaza Strip.
02:59The attacks have been non-stop as northern and central Gaza are the main two areas the
03:05Israeli military has been focusing on since the early hours of this morning.
03:10One of the major attacks on the north of the Strip was conducted on one of the main United
03:16Nations-run shelters in Havalia, a refugee camp.
03:19According to Gaza's authorities, apart from the 28 confirmed casualties, 160 others were
03:25wounded.
03:26In this context, the number of United Nations-run facilities targeted since October 2023 has
03:32risen to over 190, hit or damaged without any sort of warning.
03:42In Lebanon, the Ministry of Health confirmed on Wednesday the first cholera case in the
03:46country amid Israeli shellings.
03:49The World Health Organization, WHO, warned that the risk of an outbreak is even higher
03:54under the current war-like conditions.
03:57Furthermore, official sources detailed that the first case is a national who is currently
04:02admitted to hospital in the Accar Governorate.
04:05Meanwhile, the Director General of WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, announced that a preparedness
04:11and response plan has been approved to strengthen environmental surveillance and water sampling.
04:17In addition, the WHO representative in Lebanon, Abdel Nasser Aboubak, alerted that if the
04:22cholera outbreak reaches displaced people, the disease could spread much more rapidly.
04:32Currently, what we are seeing is actually, you know, the first case has been confirmed.
04:37But we've been talking about the risk of cholera for many months, actually, because of the
04:43deteriorating water and sanitation situations for the refugees, but also the hostile communities.
04:49As you know, Lebanon, for the last few years, has been impacted by the financial crisis.
04:54And most of the public services, whether it's the electricity, the water establishment,
04:59many of these actually have been, the services have been impacted very severely.
05:07Several international organizations, including the World Health Organization, called on Israel
05:12to allow humanitarian aid into northern Gaza to rescue the thousands dying under the rubble
05:18and to distribute food and water.
05:20For 13 days, the genocidal troops have been besieging the north of the Palestinian enclave.
05:26Israel has dropped 75,000 tons of explosives on Gaza.
05:29The north has been reduced to rubble that crushes thousands of people who survive while
05:34waiting for rescue groups that work with their hands, removing tons of rubble, because Israel
05:40prevents the entry of fuel.
05:42Fares Afana, head of emergency services in the north of Gaza, assures that people are
05:46dying of hunger and that Israel is destroying all that is alive.
05:56The president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, during the inauguration
06:00of the 66th edition of the Arturo Michelin Salon, took the opportunity to repudiate the
06:06genocide committed in Palestine and called on artists to denounce these crimes against
06:11humanity without fear.
06:13The head of state denounced the extermination of the Arab people and emphasized that what
06:18the Israeli state is committed against the Palestinians is not only physical extermination,
06:23but also cultural extermination.
06:26The president also repudiated the use of intimidation by Israel and called on the peoples of the
06:32world not to give up in the search for peace.
06:35Maduro further urged artists to use the different artistic manifestations to support the Palestinian
06:40people and to promote peace, harmony and tolerance for the future of humanity.

07:15Welcome back.
07:25The Venezuelan government accused Thursday the Spanish National Intelligence Centre,
07:29CNI, the US Drug Enforcement Administration, TEI and the Central Intelligence Agency, CIA
07:37of recruiting mercenaries to destabilize the Bolivarian nation.
07:41The accusation was made during a press conference on national television by the Minister of

07:49to sow violence in the country.
07:52Cabello also announced the seizure of 24 US-made assault rifles during the operative and assured
07:59that the rights of the detainees will be warrantied by the Venezuelan justice.
08:03The United States is using the CIA, the D and the CNI as its operative agents,
08:15there is no doubt about it, this is a fact and they know it.
08:24And they have here in Venezuela and in Colombia these individuals,
08:28Álvaro Uribe Vélez, Ivan Simón Ovis, Carlos Vechayo,
08:32Julio Borges and María Karina Machado, and they are not the only ones.
08:42They are the leaders of the operations here in Venezuela.
08:45We have captured people linked to violence in Colombia,
08:48who have acted as recruiters to send terrorists and mercenaries to Venezuela.
08:52The Venezuelan Minister of Interior also revealed that the investigations indicate
09:00that the fugitive from Venezuelan justice, Ivan Simón Ovis, is the coordinator of the arms trafficking.
09:10All these operations have Ivan Simón Ovis as the coordinating element in the arms trafficking,
09:15all of them. Ivan Simón Ovis has become a mercenary in the arms trade.
09:22An arms dealer not only for Venezuela, but also for other parts of the world.
09:27Recently some weapons were seized in Bolivia,
09:30a lot of weapons and all of them are linked to Ivan Simón Ovis.
09:39That is what he has become, an arms dealer, another mercenary and he is being protected
09:43by the government of the United States, of course he has been its agent for a very long time.
09:48In Venezuela, Executive Vice President Delsi Rodríguez denounced that more than 947
09:55unilateral sanctions imposed by the United States and its European allies to destabilize the country.

10:07measures of the Western bloc as illegitimate and unlawful since its violation of the country's
10:14territorial jurisdiction. She also highlighted that a dialogue in economic issues is needed and
10:20is a priority for the country to move forward and also to undertake concrete actions to eliminate
10:25inequality gaps. Venezuela is in a process of economic update and it demands currencies,
10:31fuel, investments and other goods to warranty the success of this process, she assured.
10:36For us, to carry out justice with the workers of our country and our retirees,
10:49it's a way to bring happiness and well-being to the people. But for you, it also means

12:00Welcome back. A new report issued by the United Nations on Thursday says that more than one
12:12billion people live in acute poverty in the world today, nearly half of them in countries
12:17experiencing conflict. According to the United Nations Development Programme report, countries
12:23at war have higher levels of deprivation across all indicators of multidimensional poverty,
12:28with more severe disparities in nutrition, access to electricity and access to water and
12:34sanitation. On the other hand, the study showed that some 584 million people under 18 were
12:41experiencing extreme poverty, accounting for 27.9% of children worldwide, compared with 13.5% of
12:49adults. Moreover, child mortality in conflict settings was 8%, compared with 1.1% in peaceful
12:57countries. Climate change, together with the ongoing armed conflict in northeastern Nigeria,
13:08have resulted in a dramatic increase in cases of severe malnutrition. The International Committee
13:13of the Red Cross, ICRC, says that this upward trend is a worrying sign that families in the
13:21region are struggling to put food on the table. Clinics have reported a 24% increase in the number
13:27of young children suffering from malnutrition compared to the previous year. The protracted
13:32armed conflict is one of the main drivers behind the deteriorating food crisis. It has displaced
13:38the millions, destroyed livelihoods and is severely impacting access to agricultural land.
13:45The ICRC estimates that over six million people in the Lake Shad region will experience
13:50food shortages in the coming month.
13:58Nigeria will become one of the first countries to roll out a new malaria vaccine after receiving
14:03a first batch of 846,200 doses. The vaccine was developed by scientists at the University of
14:11Oxford in England and produced by the Serum Institute of India and Novavax. According to the
14:18Nigerian health minister, Mohamed Ali Pate, the doses represent a significant milestone in the
14:24country's efforts to eliminate the disease. Malaria remains a major public health challenge
14:29in Nigeria, which has been considered by the World Health Organization as the world's most
14:33affected country by the disease, with 31% of its global deaths.
14:42A ride-hailing company in Kenya is trying to improve the lives of disabled people by providing
14:48them with safe and reliable transport. The As-Aids in Mobility, the start-up, was co-founded over
14:55three years ago by Daniel Gatura, who had witnessed the transport challenges faced by
15:01his wheelchair-bound father. While Kenya's legal framework promotes inclusivity of people with
15:08disabilities, including access to public transport in practice, these laws often remain unenforced.
15:14The United Nations Population Fund says people with disabilities make up 2.2% of Kenya's population,
15:21close to one million individuals. The most common type of disability is mobility-related,
15:26accounting for 42% of cases for disabled people traveling around Nairobi. Services like
15:32The United Nations Organization affirmed that the resurgence of the armed conflict in Sudan
15:38is forcing the displacement to shut of at least 25,000 people in the month of October alone.
15:44According to the report, shortly before the end of the month, the number of people
15:48displaced from their homes increased to more than 1,000. The number of people displaced from their
15:53homes increased to more than 1,000. The number of people displaced from their homes increased to
15:58in the month of October alone. According to the report, Chad is hosting more than 600,000
16:04displaced Sudanese people, with one of the highest influx being registered during the last week.
16:10In addition, the United Nations warned about the number of internally displaced persons,
16:14which rounds up to eight million, of which almost 40,000 were registered in the first
16:19weeks of the present October. The displacements are caused by increased hostilities between the
16:25armed forces and armed groups, which have generated insecurity in the population and
16:30a state of social instability.
16:47The Wilfredo Lam Contemporary Arts Center, the National Council of Fine Arts and the
16:52Cuban Ministry of Culture, will co-sponsor the 15th edition of the Havana Biennial,
16:57from November 15 to February 28, 2025. This event of paramount importance in the universe of
17:04alternative fine arts aims to contribute to the research, promotion and recognition of the visual
17:10arts of Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Latin America and the Caribbean. The Havana Biennial,
17:15founded in 1984, will focus on analyzing its own trajectory, reevaluating some of the themes there
17:22to this festival of visuality and generating new networks of communication and collaboration.
17:28Under the theme Shared Horizons, the 15th edition will emphasize the basic aspirations of connecting
17:34and obtaining and giving feedback with and for the creators and the community through
17:39the collaboration and promotion of multiple disciplines.
17:46Fans around the world are paying tribute to Liam Payne, former member of the British iconic boy band

17:59near the photo booth featured on the cover of the band's 2012 album Take Me Home. The singer-songwriter
18:06passed away on Wednesday at age 31 after falling from a hotel balcony in Argentina. He rose to fame
18:15when he joined the One Direction band at 16th, when it was created on the TV show The X Factor.
