00:28right-wing candidate Edmundo González and a US$100,000 reward for any information leading

00:39And in Vietnam, local authorities reported about 51 traffic accidents nationwide on the
00:44first day of the New Year 2025.
00:52Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra García from Telesil Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:57We begin with the news.
01:15In Palestine, at least 12 people, including three children, were killed during a shelling
01:20carried out by the Israeli occupation forces in the southern Gaza Strip.
01:24According to local media, this new attack targeted tens of displaced people located
01:30in the so-called humanitarian zone of Al-Mawassi, leaving also 15 people injured.
01:35In this sense, the Palestinian authorities sent civil protection teams and medical personnel
01:40to the place to recover the bodies and assess the wounded.
01:44In addition, it was confirmed that the Director General of the Palestinian Police in the Gaza
01:48Strip, Mahmoud Salah, was killed in the airstrike perpetrated by the Israeli-Zionist army.
02:00The Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics estimates that Gaza's population has decreased
02:05by about 6% since the start of the Israel genocide.
02:09The decline of about 160,000 people puts the enclave's current population at 2.1 million.
02:17The figures include Gaza's Health Ministry statistics, which confirm more than 45,000
02:22dead, as well as 10,000 others missing.
02:25The bureau also estimates that around 100,000 Palestinians fled from Gaza at various points
02:31since the beginning of the attacks.
02:33The Israeli government says the numbers are fabricated, but they match estimates released
02:38by the United Nations Humanitarian Affairs Office.
02:45The U.S. government has given Israel more than $22 billion in military aid since the
02:51beginning of the Zionist siege on Gaza on October 7, 2023.
02:56The information was provided Thursday by the daily Israel Hayom, which said Washington's
03:02aid to Israel had increased five times since the beginning of the Zionist genocide in Gaza.
03:07The daily detailed that the White House has supplied Israel with a variety of cutting-edge
03:13military hardware, such as heavy transport and attack helicopters, guided precision bombs,
03:19and Iron Dome defense system missiles.
03:22The U.S. military and financial aid to Tel Aviv has played a key role in the destruction
03:28inflicted by the Israeli army on Gaza and in the resulting thousands of dead and missing
03:33in the area since October 7, 2023.
03:40Lebanon reports systematic violations by Israel of the ceasefire agreement in force
03:45since November 27, 2024.
03:48The Tel Aviv forces carried out illegal military operations, raiding houses and invading neighborhoods
03:54in southern Lebanon.
03:56The Zionist troops also reportedly bombarded the towns of Beit Leif and gathered with rockets.
04:02In the face of this violation of the ceasefire, the Hezbollah resistance movement reaffirmed
04:07the firmness of its militancy in the struggle against the Israeli enemy.
04:15Families and authorities of various regions of Iran participated Thursday in a tribute
04:20held in the nation's capital of the Martyrs of the War of Resistance and in the defense
04:25of the Al-Lawite shrines.
04:28The ceremony was held at Tehran's Imam Khomeini Chapel, with relatives of the victims and
04:33residents of the area carrying photographs of martyrs such as Qasem Soleimani, Abu Mahdi
04:39al-Muhand and other fallen during the War of Resistance.
04:43Civilian officials together with the Commander-in-Chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps,
04:49Hassan Salami, and the commander of the Grikudz force accompanied the relatives of Soleimani.
04:56Photos of the late former President Ebrahim Raisi and former Foreign Minister Hossein
05:00Amir Abdullahian were also on display in the hall, while hundreds of Iranian people
05:06carried flags of the country of the so-called Axis of Resistance.
05:14The Ministry of Health of South Sudan reports the death of 1,136 people as a result of the
05:22cholera epidemic that hit the country.
05:24This figure was updated after the health authority confirmed 34 new cases of the disease, which
05:30are added to the more than 49,000 affected since August 2024.
05:36The agency detailed that despite the contagion figures, the infection rate is decreasing
05:41considerably together with the admissions to isolation centres.
05:46Since December 30, 2024, the African nation has received at least 1.1 million vaccines
05:53to combat the disease, which coincides with the humanitarian crisis resulting from the
05:58armed conflict that began in April 2023.

06:12We'll be right back, stay with us.
06:28Welcome back to From the South.
06:34In Venezuela, the Attorney General's office has issued an arrest warrant against former
06:39right-wing candidate Edmundo González and a US$100,000 reward for any information leading
06:45to his arrest.
06:46According to the authorities, the warrant has been ordered for the crimes of conspiracy
06:52and complicity in the use of violent acts against the Republic, usurpation of functions,
06:57forgery of documents, money laundering, disrespect to the institutions of the state, instigation
07:03to disobey the laws, association to commit a crime, among others.
07:08Any person who knows of his whereabouts must present him to the Public Prosecutor's Office
07:13of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.
07:19The Ecuadorian Prosecutor's Office has registered 146 complaints of forced disappearances between
07:252014 and November 2024.
07:28According to the report, 67 complaints are in the preliminary investigation stage, while
07:33the remaining 79 are filed in the provinces of El Oro, Guayas, Pichincha and Manaví.
07:40Social organisations have said that these records are not real, since they claim that
07:45some cases, such as the disappearance and subsequent murder of four children in Guayas
07:50killed by the military, are not included in the statistics.
07:53This practice is on the rise in the midst of the economic, energy, political and security
07:58crisis that the country is going through.
08:05The Government of Mexico reiterates that it will not accept foreign interference in the
08:09fight against drug trafficking and the production of fentanyl in the country.
08:14Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum assured that her government is acting against the
08:18production of fentanyl and is also defending the right to information.
08:22The President's statement comes after an article in the New York Times said that fentanyl
08:27was being produced in a laboratory located in the Mexican state of Sinaloa.
08:42We are going to collaborate with the United States as we are collaborating now for humanitarian
08:46reasons.
08:47There are more than 100,000 or close to 100,000 young people or people dying from fentanyl
08:53overdose in the United States, something that doesn't happen in Mexico.
09:05So we are going to collaborate to help as much as we can in this health crisis, they
09:08are having in the United States.
09:11And our vision is that it is not only the arrest of those who dedicate themselves to
09:15this, but we have to take it also as a public health issue.
09:27But, in Mexico, we don't accept interference, we collaborate but we don't subordinate ourselves,
09:33and that is how it is going to be.
09:39In the US, details have begun to emerge about the man killed in the Tesla Cybertruck explosion
09:44outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas on New Year's Day.
09:48Authorities say the man shot himself in the head before the explosion and likely planned
09:54to cause more damage, but the explosive was rudimentary and the steel-sided vehicle absorbed
10:00much of the force.
10:02The man, identified as Matthew Leibelsberger, was an active-duty US Army soldier who was
10:07on approved leave when he died.
10:10He was a highly decorated Green Beret who had served in various roles with the US military
10:16since 2006, with a stint in Afghanistan, Ukraine and Tajikistan, among other locations.
10:26We also discovered through the coroner's office that the individual had sustained a gunshot
10:32wound to the head prior to the detonation of the vehicle.
10:39One of the handguns was found at his feet inside of the vehicle.
10:43But I would like to highlight a couple of things that the teams found inside of the
10:46Cybertruck that are useful to the investigation, and that, first and foremost, is a military
10:51identification.
10:54We also found a passport.
10:56We found a Desert Eagle .50 caliber semi-automatic pistol.

12:41clashes in which combat vehicles, pickup trucks, Kenyan self-propelled artillery installations
12:49were also destroyed.
12:50The Russian authorities also reported that a Ukrainian electronic warfare station and
12:55ammunition depot were hit.
12:57Regarding the conflict, the Russian government reaffirmed its readiness to negotiate with
13:02Ukraine, respecting the national security and sovereignty of the territories of Donetsk
13:07and Lugansk.
13:12Montenegro's government began Thursday a three-day mourning in respect of the 12 people
13:17killed on New Year's Day by a gunman and is considering a ban on gun ownership.
13:24According to prosecutor Andrijana Nastik, the attacker, identified as 45-year-old Alexander
13:30Martinovich, initially killed four people at a restaurant in Sentinje on Wednesday and
13:36then shot dead eight others, including two children, at three other locations before
13:41fleeing the scene.
13:43The shooter died on self-inflicted wounds early Thursday after a suicide attempt when
13:48he was cornered by the police.
13:50A National Security Council meeting has been convened for Friday to discuss measures aimed
13:55at detecting and ceasing illegal weapons.
14:03More than 360 migrants arrived illegally in Spain from Africa on the first day of
14:082025.
14:09Authorities reported four precarious boats in which at least 268 people were travelling
14:16to the Canary Islands, while 92 migrants went to the Balearic Islands.
14:22In this context, authorities pointed out that among the migrants there were two dead, one
14:27of them was 15 years old.
14:29They also indicated that during the year 2024, more than 46,000 people arrived illegally
14:35to these archipelagos located in the Atlantic Ocean.
14:42As of January 1st, Ghana is allowing visa-free entry to citizens from all African countries
14:48in a move aimed at building stronger ties among the continent.
14:52The measure comes after President Nana Akufo-Addo pledged to make it a reality early in the
14:58year during the 2024 Africa Prosperity Dialogues, effectively approving the action later in
15:04December.
15:05The new approach is expected to increase tourism, trade and travel to the West African country,
15:11as analysts have previously pointed to visa restrictions as an obstacle to these sectors.
15:17With the move, Ghana then becomes the first nation on the continent to allow the entry
15:21of all African passport holders after Rwanda, the Seychelles, the Gambia and Benin.
